Research progress of fluorescent composites based on cyclodextrins: Preparation strategies, fluorescence properties and applications in sensing and bioimaging

Fluorescence analysis has been regarded as one of the commonly used analytical methods because of its advantages of simple operation, fast response, low cost and high sensitivity. So far, various fluorescent probes, with noble metal nanoclusters, quantum dots, organic dyes and metal organic frameworks as representatives, have been widely reported. However, single fluorescent probe often suffers from some deficiencies, such as low quantum yield, poor chemical stability, low water solubility and toxicity. To overcome these disadvantages, the introduction of cyclodextrins into fluorescent probes has become a fascinating approach. This review (with 218 references) systematically covers the research progress of fluorescent composites based on cyclodextrins in recent years. Preparation strategies, fluorescence properties, response mechanisms and applications in sensing (ions, organic pollutants, bio-related molecules, temperature, pH) and bioimaging of fluorescent composites based on cyclodextrins are summarized in detail. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives of these composites in relative research fields are discussed.

CYCU-3: an Al(III)-based MOF for SO2 capture and detection

The Al(III)-based MOF CYCU-3 exhibits a relevant SO2 adsorption performance with a total uptake of 11.03 mmol g-1 at 1 bar and 298 K. CYCU-3 displays high chemical stability towards dry and wet SO2 exposure. DRIFTS experiments and computational calculations demonstrated that hydrogen bonding between SO2 molecules and bridging Al(III)-OH groups are the preferential adsorption sites. In addition, photoluminescence experiments demonstrated the relevance of CYCU-3 for application in SO2 detection with good selectivity for SO2 over CO2 and H2O. The change in fluorescence performance demonstrates a clear turn-on effect after SO2 interaction. Finally, the suppression of ligand-metal energy transfer along with the enhancement of ligand-centered π* → π electronic transition was proposed as a plausible fluorescence mechanism.

A supramolecular artificial light-harvesting system based on a luminescent platinum(II) metallacage

A trigonal luminescent metallacage was constructed by the coordination-driven self-assembly of m-pyridine-modified tetraphenylene ligands with organic Pt(II) acceptors, which exhibited excellent Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) properties. An efficient artificial light-harvesting system was successfully constructed by selecting the metallacage as the donor and the hydrophobic fluorescent dye Nile Red (NiR) as the donor molecule in a system of acetone/water (1/9, v/v), The absorption spectra of NiR and the emission spectra of the metallacage showed considerable overlap, achieving energy transfer from the metallacage to NiR.

Design of a large Stokes shift ratiometric fluorescent sensor with hypochlorite detection towards the potential application as invisible security ink

Hypochlorite (ClO^-) as a well-known highly reactive oxygen species (ROS), is widely used as preservative and household disinfectant in daily life. Although many fluorescence imaging sensors for ClO^- have been reported, the development of ClO^- ratio fluorescence sensors with large Stokes shift is still quite limited. This sensor shows obvious benefits including minimizing environmental intervention and improving signal-to-noise ratio. In the present project, we report an innovative conjugated pyrene-based system, 1-B, as a chlorine fluorescence sensor. The detector exhibits ratio detection performance, large Stokes and emission shifts. Furthermore, the system has desired sensitivity as well as selectivity for ClO^-. Based on these excellent properties, the sensor 1-B was successfully used as ink to encrypt patterns and anti-counterfeiting information through inkjet printing technology. Compared with the existing probes, the probe shows some superior characteristics, which provides a promising tool for exploring the role of ClO^- response sensor in the field of anti-counterfeiting.

A Water Soluble 2-Phenyl-5-(pyridin-3-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole Based Probe: Antimicrobial Activity and Colorimetric/Fluorescence pH Response

The growing demand of responsive tools for biological and biomedical applications pushes towards new low-cost probes easy to synthesize and versatile. Current optical probes are theranostic tools simultaneously responsive to biological parameters/analyte and therapeutically operating. Among the optical methods for pH monitoring, simple small organic molecules including multifunctional probes for simultaneous biological activity being highly desired by scientists and technicians. Here, we present a novel pH-responsive probe with a three-ring heteroaromatic pattern and a flexible cationic chain. The novel molecule shows real-time naked-eye colorimetric and fluorescence response in the slightly acidic pH range besides its excellent solubility both in the organic phase and in water. In addition, the small probe shows significant antibacterial activity, particularly against Escherichia coli. Single-crystal X-ray study and density functional theory (DFT) calculations rationalize the molecule spectroscopic response. Finally, molecular dynamics (MD) elucidate the interactions between the probe and a model cell membrane.

Dynamic Covalent Bond Cross-linked Luminescent Silicone Elastomer with Self-healing and Recyclable Property

Two aldehyde-modified tetraphenylene derivatives with different functionality are synthesized and exhibit different fluorescence properties. By incorporating tetraphenylene derivatives into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) networks, two elastomers are prepared through dynamic covalent crosslinking. The elastomers show excellent fluorescence properties, mechanical properties, thermal stability as well as self-healing and recycle properties. At the same time, the mechanical properties of the elastomers are influenced by the functionality of the tetraphenylene derivatives and the molecular weight of the PDMS. The self-healing process take place quickly and the recycling process can be carried out by solution processing and hot pressing. A Novel L-Shaped Fluorescent Probe for AIE Sensing of Zinc (II) Ion by a DR/NIR Response

In the field of optical sensors, small molecules responsive to metal cations are of current interest. Probes displaying aggregation-induced emission (AIE) can solve the problems due to the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) molecules, scarcely emissive as aggregates in aqueous media and in tissues. The addition of a metal cation to an AIE ligand dissolved in solution can cause a "turn-on" of the fluorescence emission. Half-cruciform-shaped molecules can be a winning strategy to build specific AIE probes. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel L-shaped fluorophore containing a benzofuran core condensed with 3-hydroxy-2-naphthaldehyde crossed with a nitrobenzene moiety. The novel AIE probe produces a fast colorimetric and fluorescence response toward zinc (II) in both in neutral and basic conditions. Acting as a tridentate ligand, it produces a complex with enhanced and red-shifted emission in the DR/NIR spectral range. The AIE nature of both compounds was examined on the basis of X-ray crystallography and DFT analysis.

Luminescence Switching of Organogold(I) Complexes between Aggregation-induced Phosphorescence Enhancement and Aggregation-caused Quenching by Balancing Auxiliary Ligands around the AuI Center

Attaching AIE-active L1 ([1,1':2',1'':4'',1'''-quaterphenyl]-2-yldiphenylphosphane) to AuCl, shortened the distances of P-C bonds to promote electron cloud overlap between Au^I and L1, affords 1 (L1AuCl) with aggregation-induced phosphorescence enhancement (AIPE) activity by ³ LMCT transitions. Then substituting the coplanar L2 (9-ethynylanthracene) for the Cl^- in 1 providing 2, switches the luminescence to aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) activity. Furthermore, we restore the performance from ACQ to AIPE by metathesis reactions to transfer 2 into 1. It is versatile synthetic strategy of reversible transformation between 1 and 2 that switches the luminescence of organogold(I) between AIPE and ACQ through balancing auxiliary ligands around the given metal.

Luminescent silver(i) complexes with pyrazole-tetraphenylethene ligands: turn-on fluorescence due to the coordination-driven rigidification and solvent-oriented structural transformation

A new tetrapyrazole-modified tetraphenylethene (TPE) ligand L was designed and found to display "turn-on" fluorescence when it combines with Ag⁺ ions in dilute solution by restricting intramolecular rotation of TPE. A series of Ag complexes 1-7 were obtained, and they exhibit excellent fluorescence properties in the solid state. Compared with PF₆^-, the silver complex with the CF₃SO₃^- anion can further enhance its fluorescence due to the transformation of its structure from Ag₂L (2) to Ag₄L₂ (3). As zero-dimensional complexes, 1 and 3 have excellent piezochromic properties with a color change from blue to green. Furthermore, structural changes of 1 and 3 to the corresponding three-dimensional frameworks 4 and 5 occur upon immersing in ethanol. In addition, 1 can act as a potential fluorescent probe for sensing nitrile compounds.

Coordination-Induced Emission from Tetraphenylethylene Units and Their Applications

Thanks to the potential of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena, improved stabilities, and the good selectivity and sensitivity of the chemical responses exhibited by the products, coordination-driven self-assembly with tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units has recently received much attention and has been widely investigated for application in chemical sensors, cell imaging agents, light-harvesting systems, and others. Several reviews have emerged on the topics of AIE chemistry and aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen)-based supramolecular assembles, however, there is still a distinct lack of full overviews of emission enhancement from the viewpoint of metal-coordination effects. Thus, this minireview offers recent advances that have been made in the design and application of TPE-based metallacycles, metallacages, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs).
