Enhanced water stability and catalytic activity of Fe-based metal-organic frameworks with co-ligands for 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation

Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have good photocatalytic performance, environmental friendliness, low cost, and abundance. However, their applications are limited by low water stability, particularly in the presence of light irradiation and oxidizing agents. In this study, we present a MIL-53(Fe)-based MOF using 1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylic (1,4-NDC) and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic (H2BDC) acid co-ligands, denoted MIL-53(Fe)-Nx, where Nx represents the ratio of 1,4-NDC. This MOF exhibits high water stability and good photocatalytic activity because of the hydrophobicity of naphthalene. The removal and mineralization rates for 100 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenol reached 100% and 22%, respectively, within 60 min. After three cycles of use, the Fe leached into the solution from the catalysts was significantly lower than the maximum permissible limit indicated in the European Union standard. Of note, 1,4-NDC can be used to make a rigid MOF, thereby improving the crystallinity, porosity, and hydrophobicity of the resultant materials. It also significantly reduced the bandgap energy and improved the charge separation efficiency of the catalysts. This study provides a route to enhance the water stability of Fe-based MOFs via a mixed-ligand strategy to expand their applications in pollutant control.

Mining for Metal-Organic Systems: Chemistry Frontiers of Th-, U-, and Zr-Materials

The conceptual framework presented in this Perspective overviews the design principles of innovative thorium-based materials that could address urgent needs of the medicinal, nuclear energy, and waste remediation sectors from the lens of zirconium and uranium analogs. We survey the intersections of Zr, Th, and U chemistry with a focus on how the intrinsic behavior of each metal translates to broader material properties, including, but not limited to, structural and topological diversity, preferential metal-ligand binding, and reactivity. On the example of several classes of materials, including organometallic complexes, polyoxometalates, and the primary focus of this Perspective, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the design principles that govern the preparation of Zr-, Th-, and U-compounds, including oxophilicity, variation in oxidation states, and stable coordination environments have been considered. Further, we highlight how the impact of the mentioned variables may shift throughout the progression from discrete molecular systems to extended structures. We discuss the common assumption that zirconium-organic materials are typically considered a close analog of thorium-based congeners in areas such as material design and preparation. Through consideration of fundamental chemistry principles, we shed light on the relationships between Zr-, Th-, and U-based materials and highlight how a critical analysis of their distinct properties can be used to target a desired material performance. As a result, we provide a detailed understanding of Th-based materials chemistry by anchoring their fundamental properties between two well-studied reference points, zirconium- and uranium-containing analogs.

Friends or Foes: Fundamental Principles of Th-Organic Scaffold Chemistry Using Zr-Analogs as a Guide

The fundamental interest in actinide chemistry, particularly for the development of thorium-based materials, is experiencing a renaissance owing to the recent and rapidly growing attention to fuel cycle reactors, radiological daughters for nuclear medicine, and efficient nuclear stockpile development. Herein, we uncover fundamental principles of thorium chemistry on the example of Th-based extended structures such as metal-organic frameworks in comparison with the discrete systems and zirconium extended analogs, demonstrating remarkable over two-and-half-year chemical stability of Th-based frameworks as a function of metal node connectivity, amount of defects, and conformational linker rigidity through comprehensive spectroscopic and crystallographic analysis as well as theoretical modeling. Despite exceptional chemical stability, we report the first example of studies focusing on the reactivity of the most chemically stable Th-based frameworks in comparison with the discrete Th-based systems such as metal-organic complexes and a cage, contrasting multicycle recyclability and selectivity (>97%) of the extended structures in comparison with the molecular compounds. Overall, the presented work not only establishes the conceptual foundation for evaluating the capabilities of Th-based materials but also represents a milestone for their multifaceted future and foreshadows their potential to shape the next era of actinide chemistry.

Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Framework Materials: Design, Construction, and Application in the Field of Photocatalysis

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel category of porous crystalline materials with an exceptionally high surface area and adjustable pore structure. They possess a designable composition and can be easily functionalized with different units. Porphyrins with conjugated tetrapyrrole macrocyclic structures can absorb light from ultraviolet to visible light regions, and their structures and properties can be facilely regulated by altering their peripheral groups or central metal ions. Porphyrin-based MOFs constructed from porphyrin ligands and metal nodes combine the unique features of porphyrins and MOFs as well as overcoming their respective limitations. This paper reviewed the design and construction, light absorption and charge transfer pathways, and strategy for improving the photocatalytic performance of porphyrin-based MOFs, and highlighted the recent progress in the field of CO2 reduction, hydrogen evolution, organic synthesis, organic pollutant removal, and nitrogen fixation. The intrinsic relationships between the structure and the property of porphyrin-based MOFs received special attention, especially the relationships between the arrangements of porphyrin ligands and metal nods and the charge transfer mechanism. We attempted to provide more valuable information for the design and construction of advanced photocatalysts in the future. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of the porphyrin-based MOFs are also discussed.

Th6-Based Multicomponent Heterometallic Metal-Organic Frameworks Featuring 6,12-Connected Topology for Iodine Adsorption

Its high coordination number and tendency to cluster make Th4+ suitable for constructing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with novel topologies. In this work, two novel thorium-based heterometallic MOF isomers (IHEP-17 and IHEP-18) were assembled from a Th6 cluster, a multifunctional organic ligand [4-(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)benzoic acid (HPyba)], and Cu2+/Ni2+ cations via the one-pot solvothermal synthesis strategy. The framework features a 6,12-connected new topology net and contains two kinds of supramolecular cage structures, Th36M4 and Th24M2, suitable for guest exchange. Both MOF materials can efficiently adsorb I2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicate that the adsorbed iodine is uniformly distributed within the Th36M4 cage but not the Th24M2 cage in the form of I3-.

Density Functional Theory Study of Synergistic Gas Sensing Using an Electrically Conductive Mixed Ligand Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework

Two-dimensional conductive metal-organic frameworks (2D-cMOFs) have been adopted in electrochemical sensing applications owing to their superior electrical conductivity and large surface area. Here, we performed a density functional theory (DFT) analysis to study the synergistic impact of introducing a secondary organic ligand to the 2D-cMOF system. In this study, cobalt-hexaiminobenzene (Co-HIB) and cobalt-2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene (Co-HITP) were combined to form a mixed ligand MOF named, Co-HIB-HITP. A DFT-level comparative study was designed to access stability, synergistic gas adsorption capability, and gas adsorption mechanism, important factors in sensing material development. A potential energy surface calculation predicted the structural stability of Co-HIB-HITP at larger interlayer displacements around 3.6-4.2 Å regions along the ab-plane than its unmixed states, Co-HIB and Co-HITP, indicating the tunability of the stacking mode using the mixed ligand system. Furthermore, the adsorption capabilities toward toxic gases, NH3, H2S, NO, and NO2, were investigated, and Co-HIB-HITP revealed superiority over unmixed 2D-cMOFs in H2S and NH3 gas adsorption energies by showing 158 and 170% improvement, respectively. Finally, an electron charge density analysis revealed Co-HIB-HITP's unique stacking mode and Co-metal density as contributing factors to its gas-selective synergy effect. The AB stacked layers and an intermediate metal density (5.25%) significantly improved the electrostatic interactions with H2S and NH3 by inducing a change in the chemical environment of the gas binding sites. This work proposes the dual-ligand 2D-cMOF as the promising design strategy for the next-generation sensing material.

Thermally Induced Orderly Alignment of Porphyrin Photoactive Motifs in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Boosting Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Efficient transfer of charge carriers through a fast transport pathway is crucial to excellent photocatalytic reduction performance in solar-driven CO2 reduction, but it is still challenging to effectively modulate the electronic transport pathway between photoactive motifs by feasible chemical means. In this work, we propose a thermally induced strategy to precisely modulate the fast electron transport pathway formed between the photoactive motifs of a porphyrin metal-organic framework using thorium ion with large ionic radius and high coordination number as the coordination-labile metal node. As a result, the stacking pattern of porphyrin molecules in the framework before and after the crystal transformations has changed dramatically, which leads to significant differences in the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers in MOFs. The rate of photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO by IHEP-22(Co) reaches 350.9 μmol·h-1·g-1, which is 3.60 times that of IHEP-21(Co) and 1.46 times that of IHEP-23(Co). Photoelectrochemical characterizations and theoretical calculations suggest that the electron transport channels formed between porphyrin molecules inhibit the recombination of photogenerated carriers, resulting in high performance for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The interaction mechanism of CO2 with IHEP-22(Co) was clarified by using in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance, in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, in-situ extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. These results provide a new method to regulate the efficient separation and migration of charge carriers in CO2 reduction photocatalysts and will be helpful to guide the design and synthesis of photocatalysts with superior performance for the production of solar fuels.

Achieving High Photo/Thermocatalytic Product Selectivity and Conversion via Thorium Clusters with Switchable Functional Ligands

Structural exploration and functional application of thorium clusters are still very rare on account of their difficult synthesis caused by the susceptible hydrolysis of thorium element. In this work, we elaborately designed and constructed four stable thorium clusters modified with different functionalized capping ligands, Th₆-MA, Th₆-BEN, Th₆-C8A, and Th₆-Fcc, which possessed nearly the same hexanuclear thorium-oxo core but different capabilities in light absorption and charge separation. Consequently, for the first time, these new thorium clusters were treated as model catalysts to systematically investigate the light-induced oxidative coupling reaction of benzylamine and thermodriven oxidation of aniline, achieving >90% product selectivity and approximately 100% conversion, respectively. Concurrently, we found that thorium clusters modified by switchable functional ligands can effectively modulate the selectivity and conversion of catalytic reaction products. Moreover, catalytic characterization and density functional theory calculations consistently indicated that these thorium clusters can activate O₂/H₂O₂ to generate active intermediates O₂^·-/HOO^· and then improved the conversion of amines efficiently. Significantly, this work represents the first report of stable thorium clusters applied to photo/thermotriggered catalytic reactions and puts forward a new design avenue for the construction of more efficient thorium cluster catalysts.

Progress in solid state and coordination chemistry of actinides in China

In the past decade, the area of solid state chemistry of actinides has witnessed a rapid development in China, based on the significantly increased proportion of the number of actinide containing crystal structures reported by Chinese researchers from only 2% in 2010 to 36% in 2021. In this review article, we comprehensively overview the synthesis, structure, and characterizations of representative actinide solid compounds including oxo-compounds, organometallic compounds, and endohedral metallofullerenes reported by Chinese researchers. In addition, Chinese researchers pioneered several potential applications of actinide solid compounds in terms of adsorption, separation, photoelectric materials, and photo-catalysis, which are also briefly discussed. It is our hope that this contribution not only calls for further development of this area in China, but also arouses new research directions and interests in actinide chemistry and material sciences.

Modular Assembly of Isostructural Mixed-Ligand Uranyl Coordination Polymers Based on a Patterning Strategy

Controlling the orderly assembly of molecular building blocks for the formation of the desired architectural, chemical, and physical properties of the resulting solid-state materials remains a long-term goal and deserves to be examined. In this work, we propose a patterning strategy for modular assembly and structural regulation of mixed-ligand uranyl coordination polymers (CPs) through the combination of couples of organic ligands with complementary molecular geometry and well-matched coordination modes. By using a 5-(p-tolyldiazenyl)isophthalic acid ligand (H₂ptdi) with different rigid linear bicarboxylic acid linkers to construct a well-defined ladder-like pattern, five novel isostructural uranyl coordination polymers, [(UO)₂(ptdi)(bdc)_0.5](dma) (1), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(bpdc)_0.5](dma) (2), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(tpdc)_0.5](dma) (3), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(ndc)_0.5](dma) (4), and [(UO)₂(ptdi) (pdc)_0.5](dma) (5) {H₂bdc, 1,4-dicarboxybenzene; H₂bpdc, 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid; H₂tpdc, terphenyl-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid; H₂ndc, 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid; H₂pdc, 1,6-pyrenedicarboxylic acid; [dma]⁺, [(CH₃)₂NH₂]⁺}, were successfully synthesized. Structural analysis reveals that 1-5 have similar ladder-like units but different sizes of one-dimensional nanochannels and interlayer spacing due to the different lengths and widths of the linkers. Because of the changes in interlayer spacing of these isostructural cationic frameworks, differences in the performance of Eu³⁺ ion exchange with [dma]⁺ are observed. Moreover, those compounds with high phase purity have been further characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy, element analysis, PXRD and UV spectroscopy. Among them, compound 3 with strong fluorescence can selectively detect Fe³⁺ over several competing metal cations in aqueous solution. This work not only provides a feasible patterning method for effectively regulating the modular synthesis of functional coordination polymers but also enriches the library of uranyl-based coordination polymers with intriguing structures and functionality.

Confined-based catalyst investigation through the comparative functionalization and defunctionalization of Zr-MOF

In metal–organic frameworks, confined space as a chemical nanoreactor is as important as organocatalysis or coordinatively unsaturated metal site catalysis. In the present study, a set of mixed-ligand structures with UiO-66 architecture have been prepared. To the best of our knowledge, for the first time, structures derived by the solvothermal mixing ligand method and ultrasonic-assisted linker exchange approaches have been compared. Additionally, the relationship between the preparation method, structural properties, and catalytic efficiency of the prepared materials in the Knoevenagel condensation of aldehydes has been investigated. The prepared catalyst is very stable and can be recovered and reused for at least ten periods.

Recent advances in the applications of thorium-based metal-organic frameworks and molecular clusters

This perspective highlights the recent advances in the structural and practical aspects of thorium-based metal-organic frameworks (Th-MOFs) and molecular clusters. Thorium, as an underexplored actinide, features surprisingly rich coordination geometries and accessibility of the 5f orbital. These features lead to a myriad of topologies and electronic structures, many of which are undocumented for other tetravalent metal-containing MOFs or clusters. Moreover, Th-MOFs inherit the modularity, structural tunability, porosity, and versatile functionality of the state-of-the-art MOFs. Recognizing the radioactive nature of these thorium-bearing materials that may limit their practical uses, Th-MOFs and Th-clusters still have great potential for various applications, including radionuclide sequestration, hydrocarbon storage/separation, radiation detection, photoswitch, CO₂ conversion, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis. The objective of this updated perspective is to propose pathways for the renaissance of interest in thorium-based materials.

Encapsulation of Polymetallic Oxygen Clusters in a Mesoporous/Microporous Thorium-Based Porphyrin Metal-Organic Framework for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Solar-initiated CO₂ reduction is significant for green energy development. Herein, we have prepared a new mesoporous/microporous porphyrin metal-organic framework (MOF), IHEP-20, loaded with polymetallic oxygen clusters (POMs) to form a composite material POMs@IHEP-20 for visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO₂ reduction. The as-made composite material exhibits good stability in water from pH 0 to 11. After POMs were introduced to IHEP-20, they showed superior activity toward photocatalytic CO₂ reduction with a CO production rate of 970 μmol·g^-1·h^-1, which is 3.27 times higher than that of pristine IHEP-20. This study opens a new door for the design and synthesis of high-performance catalysts for the photocatalytic reduction of CO₂.

An Earth-abundant cobalt based photocatalyst: visible light induced direct (het)arene C-H arylation and CO2 capture

In this work, we have reported a noble metal free heterogeneous photocatalyst to carry out direct (het)arene C-H arylation and solvent-free CO₂ capture via single-electron transfer processes at room temperature and under pressure. The catalytic system comprises a cobalt(III) complex grafted over the silica coated magnetic support for the efficient recovery of the photocatalytic moiety without hampering its light-harvesting capability. The novel Earth-abundant cobalt(III) based photocatalyst possesses various fascinating properties such as high surface area to volume ratios, large pore volume, crystalline behaviour, high metal loading, excellent stability and reusability. The general efficacy of the highly abundant and low-cost cobalt based heterogeneous nanocatalyst was checked for the selective conversion of aryldiazonium salts into synthetically and pharmaceutically significant biaryl motifs under ambient conditions upon irradiation with visible light. The highly efficient photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO₂) to a value-added chemical was accomplished under mild reaction conditions with high selectivity, showing the added benefit of operational simplicity.

A cationic thorium-organic framework with triple single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation peculiarities for ultrasensitive anion recognition

Single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation of metal-organic frameworks has been met with great interest, as it allows for the creation of new materials in a stepwise manner and direct visualization of structural transitions when subjected to external stimuli. However, it remains a peculiarity among numerous metal-organic frameworks, particularly for the ones constructed from tetravalent metal cations. Herein, we present a cationic thorium-organic framework displaying unprecedented triple single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations in organic solvents, water, and NaIO3 solution. Notably, both the interpenetration conversion and topological change driven by the SC-SC transformation have remained elusive for thorium-organic frameworks. Moreover, the single-crystal-to-single-crystal transition in NaIO3 solution can efficiently and selectively turn the ligand-based emission off, leading to the lowest limit of detection (0.107 μg kg-1) of iodate, one of the primary species of long-lived fission product 129I in aqueous medium, among all luminescent sensors.

Unveiling the Unique Roles of Metal Coordination and Modulator in the Polymorphism Control of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Polymorphism control of metal-organic frameworks is highly desired for elucidating structure-property relationships, but remains an empirical process and is usually done in a trial-and-error approach. We adopted the rarely used actinide cation Th⁴⁺ and a ditopic linker to construct a series of thorium-organic frameworks (TOFs) with a range of polymorphs. The extraordinary coordination versatility of Th⁴⁺ cations and clusters, coupled with synthetic modulation, gives five distinct phases, wherein the highest degree of interpenetration (threefold) and porosity (75.9 %) of TOFs have been achieved. Notably, the O atom on the capping site of the nine-coordinated Th⁴⁺ cation can function as a bridging unit to interconnect neighboring secondary building units (SBUs), affording topologies that are undocumented for other tetravalent-metal-containing MOFs. Furthermore, for the first time HCOOH has been demonstrated as a bridging unit of SBUs to further induce structural complexity. The resulting TOFs exhibit considerably different adsorption behaviors toward organic dyes, thus suggesting that TOFs represent an exceptional and promising platform for structure-property relationship study.

Emergence of a thorium-organic framework as a radiation attenuator for selective X-ray dosimetry

By first applying a thorium-organic framework (Th-SINAP-2) as a radiation attenuator and by incorporating a terpyridine derivative (Htpbz) as a photo-responsive guest, selective photochromism in response to X-rays was achieved in the host-guest assembly of Htpbz@Th-SINAP-2. Such a combination endows the afforded material with the lowest detection limit of X-ray dose among all photochromic sensors and a brand-new function of X-ray dosimetry for thorium containing materials.

Beyond structural motifs: the frontier of actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks

In this perspective, we feature recent advances in the field of actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks (An-MOFs) with a main focus on their electronic, catalytic, photophysical, and sorption properties. This discussion deviates from a strictly crystallographic analysis of An-MOFs, reported in several reviews, or synthesis of novel structural motifs, and instead delves into the remarkable potential of An-MOFs for evolving the nuclear waste administration sector. Currently, the An-MOF field is dominated by thorium- and uranium-containing structures, with only a few reports on transuranic frameworks. However, some of the reported properties in the field of An-MOFs foreshadow potential implementation of these materials and are the main focus of this report. Thus, this perspective intends to provide a glimpse into the challenges, triumphs, and future directions of An-MOFs in sectors ranging from the traditional realm of gas sorption and separation to recently emerging areas such as electronics and photophysics.

Interpenetration Control in Thorium Metal-Organic Frameworks: Structural Complexity toward Iodine Adsorption

The rational design and synthesis of metal-organic frameworks with well-controlled interpenetration have been active research areas of inquiry, particularly for porosity-related applications. Herein, we extend the use of the ligand steric modulation strategy to initiate the first study of the interpenetration control of thorium-based MOFs. The approximate "hardness" of the Th⁴⁺ cation, which was conjugated with aromatic substitutions and delicately modified synthetic conditions, allows for the crystallization of single crystals of seven new Th-MOFs with five distinct topologies. Solvothermal reactions of Th(NO₃)₄ with the triphenyl H₂TPDC ligand under variable conditions exclusively gave rise to an interpenetrated Th-MOF with a hex topology, namely Th-SINAP-16. Modifications of the ligand sterics with two pendant methyl groups to 2',5'-Me₂TPDC^2- and 2,2″-Me₂TPDC^2- afforded two noninterpenetrated UiO-68-type Th-MOFs (Th-SINAP-17 and Th-SINAP-20, respectively) with record-high pore volumes (74.8% and 75.3%, respectively) among all the thorium MOFs. Moreover, another four Th-MOFs Th-SINAP-n (n = 18, 19, 21, and 22) with three different topologies were obtained by a simple synthetic modulation. Notably, Th-SINAP-16 and Th-SINAP-21 represent the second rare examples of interpenetrated Th-MOFs reported to date. These findings revealed the unprecedented structural complexity and synthetic accessibility of Th-MOFs among all tetravalent metal containing MOFs. Such features make Th-MOFs as an ideal platform to elucidate the structure-property relationship for various applications, e.g. iodine adsorption.

A historical perspective on porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks and their applications

Porphyrins are important molecules widely found in nature in the form of enzyme active sites and visible light absorption units. Recent interest in using these functional molecules as building blocks for the construction of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have rapidly increased due to the ease in which the locations of, and the distances between, the porphyrin units can be controlled in these porous crystalline materials. Porphyrin-based MOFs with atomically precise structures provide an ideal platform for the investigation of their structure-function relationships in the solid state without compromising accessibility to the inherent properties of the porphyrin building blocks. This review will provide a historical overview of the development and applications of porphyrin-based MOFs from early studies focused on design and structures, to recent efforts on their utilization in biomimetic catalysis, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, sensing, and biomedical applications.

Tuning of the Network Dimensionality and Photoluminescent Properties in Homo- and Heteroleptic Lanthanide Coordination Polymers

Targeted synthesis, through a heteroleptic methodology, has resulted in three types of lanthanide (Ln) coordination polymers (CPs) with tailored dimensionality, tunable photoluminescent colors, and distinct luminescence quenching upon UV and X-ray irradiation. The homoleptic Ln(tpbz)(NO₃)₂ [CP-1; tpbz = 4-(2,2':6',2″-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzoate] is assembled from Ln cations and bridging tpbz ligands, accompanied by the decoration of NO₃^- anions, forming a one-dimensional (1D) chain structure. The presence of ancillary dicarboxylate linkers, 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) and 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate (tdc), promotes additional bridging between 1D chains to form a two-dimensional layer and a three-dimensional framework for Ln(tpbz)(bdc) (CP-2) and Ln(tpbz)(tdc) (CP-3), respectively. The multicolor and luminescence properties of the obtained CPs were investigated, displaying typical red Eu^III-based and green Tb^III-based emissions. The Sm^III-bearing CP-1-CP-3, however, exhibit diverse ratiometric Ln^III- and ligand-based emissions, with the photoluminescent colors varying from pink to orange to cyan. Notably, the Tb^III-containing CP-1-CP-3 display distinct luminescence quenching upon continuous exposure to UV and X-ray irradiation. To our best knowledge, CP-2-Tb represents one of the most sensitive UV dosage probes (3.2 × 10^-7 J) among all CPs.

Construction of Hybrid Bimetallic Uranyl Compounds Based on a Preassembled Terpyridine Metalloligand

Six hybrid uranyl-transition metal compounds [UO₂ Ni(cptpy)₂ (HCOO)₂ (DMF)(H₂ O)] (1), [UO₂ Ni(cptpy)₂ (BTPA)₂ ] (2), [UO₂ Fe(cptpy)₂ (HCOO)₂ (DMF)(H₂ O)] (3), [UO₂ Fe(cptpy)₂ (BTPA)₂ ] (4), [UO₂ Co(cptpy)₂ (HCOO)₂ (DMF)(H₂ O)] (5), and [UO₂ Co(cptpy)₂ (BTPA)₂ ] (6), based on bifunctional ligand 4'-(4-carboxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (Hcptpy) are reported (H₂ BTPA = 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid). Single-crystal XRD revealed that all six compounds feature similar metalloligands, which consist of two cptpy^- anions and one transition metal cation. The metalloligand M(cptpy)₂ can be considered to be an extended linear dicarboxylic ligand with length of 22.12 Å. Compounds 1, 3, and 5 are isomers, and all of them feature 1D chain structures. The adjacent 1D chains are connected together by hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions to form a 3D porous structure, which is filled with solvent molecules and can be exchanged with I₂ . Compounds 2, 4, and 6 are also isomers, and all of them feature 2D honeycomb (6,3) networks with hexagonal units of dimensions 41.91×26.89 Å, which are the largest among uranyl compounds with honeycomb networks. The large aperture allows two sets of equivalent networks to be entangled together to result in a 2D+2D→3D polycatenated framework. Remarkably, these uranyl compounds exhibit high catalytic activity for cycloaddition of carbon dioxide. Moreover, the geometric and electronic structures of compounds 1 and 2 are systematically discussed on the basis of DFT calculations.

Potassium Ions Induced Framework Interpenetration for Enhancing the Stability of Uranium-Based Porphyrin MOF with Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity

The stability of many MOFs is not satisfactory, which severely limits the exploration of their potential applications. Given this, we have proposed a strategy to improve the stability of MOFs by introducing alkali metal K⁺ capable of coordinating with metal nodes, which finally induces the interpenetrating uranyl-porphyrin framework to connect as a whole (IHEP-9). The stability experiments reveal that the IHEP-9 has good thermal stability up to 400 °C and can maintain its crystalline state in the aqueous solution with pH ranging from 2 to 11. The catalytic activity of IHEP-9 as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for CO₂ cycloaddition under the driving of visible light at room temperature is also demonstrated. This induced interpenetration and fixation method may be promising for the fabrication of more functional MOFs with improved structural stability.

Auxiliary Ligand-Dependent Adaptive Regulation of Uranyl Coordination in Mixed-Ligand Uranyl Compounds of Flexible Biphenyltetracarboxylic Acid

The mixed-ligand strategy is one of the important methods for preparing new materials and regulating the properties of materials. In this work, by introducing different auxiliary ligands (ALs), we have obtained a series of mixed-ligand uranyl complexes (1-6) from a flexible biphenyltetracarboxylic acid (H₄bptc) with an adjustable orthogonal conformation and studied the influence of different organic base molecules on the coordination and assembly of H₄bptc with a uranyl cation. It is found that the coordinated ALs, including 4,4'-bipyridine-1,1'-dioxide and 1,10-phenanthroline, partially occupy the coordination sites of the uranyl center and directly affect the molecular conformations and uranyl coordination of flexible bptc linkers. On the other hand, noncoordinated ALs such as protonated 4,4'-bipyridine ([H₂(4,4'-bpy)]²⁺) or dimethylammonium, which work as counterions in the form of encapsulated guests or hydrogen-bonded templates, also have a nonnegligible impact on the conformation and coordination of bptc linkers. Most interestingly, the AL-mediated evolution of uranyl coordination by the bptc linker and coordination geometry of the uranyl center is clearly observed, which suggests the adaptability of flexible bptc linkers to take suitable molecular configurations and uranyl coordination modes so as to adapt to the external regulator agents and varying environment. The physicochemical characterization of these uranyl compounds, especially photoluminescence, is addressed and discussed, and the results reveal that compound 5 has the potential to serve as a multifunctional radiation detection material for UV light and X-ray radiation.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Group 3 and 4 Metals

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on group 3 and 4 metals are considered as the most promising MOFs for varying practical applications including water adsorption, carbon conversion, and biomedical applications. The relatively strong coordination bonds and versatile coordination modes within these MOFs endow the framework with high chemical stability, diverse structures and topologies, and interesting properties and functions. Herein, the significant progress made on this series of MOFs since 2018 is summarized and an update on the current status and future trends on the structural design of robust MOFs with high connectivity is provided. Cluster chemistry involving Y, lanthanides (Ln, from La to Lu), actinides (An, from Ac to Lr), Ti, and Zr is initially introduced. This is followed by a review of recently developed MOFs based on group 3 and 4 metals with their structures discussed based on the types of inorganic or organic building blocks. The novel properties and arising applications of these MOFs in catalysis, adsorption and separation, delivery, and sensing are highlighted. Overall, this review is expected to provide a timely summary on MOFs based on group 3 and 4 metals, which shall guide the future discovery and development of stable and functional MOFs for practical applications.

Modulated synthesis and isoreticular expansion of Th-MOFs with record high pore volume and surface area for iodine adsorption

Isoreticular expansion of Th-MOFs via modulated synthesis yielded seven hierarchical complexes with superior quality single crystals, record high void space and BET surface area among Th materials, and exceptional iodine adsorption capacities.

Synthesis and magnetic properties of two Mn-based coordination polymers constructed by a mixed-ligand strategy

Two Mn(ii) CPs have been synthesized by mixed-ligand strategy and measured for their magnetic properties. Moreover, analysis of the magnetic structure–effect relationship indicates that 1 and 2 have different Mn chains of magnetic interactions.
