Abstract
Designing innovative microstructures and implementing efficient multicomponent strategies are still challenging to achieve high-performance and chemo-mechanically stable electrode materials. Herein, a hierarchical three-dimensional (3D) graphene oxide (GO) assisted Ti3C2Tx MXene aerogel foam (MXene-GAF) impregnated with battery-type bimetallic nickel vanadium selenide (NiVSe) has been prepared through a hydrothermal method followed by freeze-drying (denoted as NiVSe-MXene-GAF). 3D-oriented cellular pore networks benefit the energy storage process through the effective lodging of NiVSe particles, improving the access of the electrolyte to the active sites, and alleviating volume changes during redox reactions. The 3D MXene-GAF conductive matrix and heterostructured interface of MXene-rGO and NiVSe facilitated the rapid transport of electrical charges and ions during the charge-discharge process. As a result of the synergism of these effects, NiVSe-MXene-GAF exhibited remarkable electrochemical performance with a specific capacity of 305.8 mA h g-1 at 1 A g-1 and 99.2% initial coulombic efficiency. The NiVSe-MXene-GAF electrode delivered a specific capacity of 235.1 mA h g-1 even at a high current density of 12 A g-1 with a 76.8% rate performance. The impedance measurements indicated a low bulk solution resistance (Rs = 0.71 Ω) for NiVSe-MXene-GAF. Furthermore, the structural robustness of NiVSe-MXene-GAF guaranteed long-term stability with a 91.7% capacity retention for successive 7000 cycles. Thus, developing NiVSe-MXene-GAF provides a progressive strategy for fabricating high-performance 3D heterostructured electrode materials for energy storage applications.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of novel heterostructured electrode materials are crucial to enable the fabrication of efficient supercapacitor devices. In this regard, transition metal phosphochalcogenides (S, Se) are promising candidates owing to their exotic electronic properties. Herein, a facile two-step hydrothermal protocol was used to synthesize binary and ternary metal phospho-selenide electrodes (Mn-Fe-P-Se, V-Fe-P-Se, Mn-V-P-Se, and Mn-Fe-V-P-Se). The chemical composition, morphology, and structure of the as-fabricated materials were fully investigated. The three-electrode electrochemical evaluation at 1.0 A g-1 demonstrated that the ternary metal electrode (MFVP-Se) exhibits a high capacity of 1968.63 C g-1. To assess the practical value of the rationally designed Mn-Fe-V-P-Se electrode material, Mn-Fe-V-P-Se was used as a positive electrode coupled with activated carbon (AC) as a negative electrode to assemble a hybrid supercapacitor device. This Mn-Fe-V-P-Se//AC device delivers a power density of 1999.96 W kg-1 with a high energy density of 149.88 Wh kg-1 coupled with no capacity loss after 5000 charging/discharging cycles. Additionally, density functional theory calculations revealed that our electrode exhibits suitable adsorption energy for OH- ions with a minimal diffusion barrier for ions.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are recognized as a desirable class of porous materials for energy storage applications, despite their limited conductivity. In the present study, Co-MOF-71 was fabricated as a high-performance supercapacitor electrode at ambient temperature using a fast and straightforward, one-pot cold plasma method. A supercapacitor electrode based on Co-MOF@rGO was also synthesized by adding reduced graphene oxide (rGO) during processing to increase the capacitance retention and stability after 4000 cycles from 80 to 95.4%. The Co-MOF-71 electrode provided a specific capacitance (Cs) of 651.7 Fg-1 at 1 Ag-1, whereas the Co-MOF@rGO electrode produced a Cs value of 967.68 Fg-1 at 1 Ag-1. In addition, we fabricated an asymmetric device (Co-MOF@rGO||AC) using Co-MOF-rGO as a high-rate positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as a negative electrode. This hybrid device has a remarkable specific energy and power density. The combination of MOFs with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in a cold plasma environment resulted in the formation of a three-dimensional nanostructure composed of nanosheets. This nanostructure exhibited an increased number of electroactive sites, providing benefits for energy storage applications.

Abstract
The anionic components have a significant role in regulating the electrochemical properties of mixed transition-metal (MTM)-based materials. However, the relationship between the anionic components and their inherent electrochemical properties in MTM-based materials is still unclear. Herein, we report the anion-dependent supercapacitive and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) properties of in situ grown binary Ni-Co-selenide (Se)/sulfide (S)/phosphide (P) nanosheet arrays (NAs) over nickel foam starting from MOF-derived Ni-Co layered double hydroxide precursors. Among them, the Ni-Co-Se NAs exhibited the best specific capacity (289.6 mA h g-1 at 4 mA cm-2). Furthermore, a hybrid device constructed with Ni-Co-Se NAs delivered an excellent energy density (74 W h kg-1 at 525 W kg-1) and an ultra-high power density (10 832 W kg-1 at 46 W h kg-1) with outstanding durability (∼94%) for 10 000 cycles. Meanwhile, the Ni-Co-Se NAs showed superior electrocatalytic OER outputs with the lowest overpotential (235 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and Tafel slope. In addition, Ni-Co-Se NAs outperformed IrO2 as an anode in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer at a high current density (>1.0 A cm-2) and exhibited a stable performance up to 48 h with a 99% Faraday efficiency. Theoretical analyses validate that the Se promotes OH adsorption and improves the electrochemical activity of the Ni-Co-Se through a strong electronic redistribution/hybridization with an active metal center due to its valence 4p and inner 3d orbital participations. This study will provide in-depth knowledge of bifunctional activities in MTM-based materials with different anionic substitutions.

Abstract
The hierarchically nanostructured NiTe@CoxSy composites are constructed on a foamed nickel substrate by a two-step electrode preparation process. Structural characterization shows the dense growing of CoxSy nanosheets around NiTe nanorods forms a hierarchical nanostructure which possesses synergetic effects from both compositional and structural complementarity, more pathways for ion/electrolyte transport, richer redox active sites, and better conductivity. Thanks to the rational design of this hierarchical structure, NiTe@CoxSy delivers a high areal capacitance of 7.7F cm-2 at 3 mA cm-2 and achieves the improved capacitance retention of 97.9% after 10,000 cycles. Of particular importance is the successful fabrication of NiTe@CoxSy//activated carbon hybrid supercapacitors. This hybrid device has a wide operating voltage window, high areal energy density of 0.48 mWh cm-2 at 2.55 mW cm-2, impressive rate capability of 62.3% even after a 20-fold increase of the current density, and a 115.1% of initial capacitance retention after 15,000 cycles. Meanwhile, two tandem such hybrid devices can easily drive a pair of mini fans or light up a heart-like pattern assembled by 10 red LEDs. These experimental results not only demonstrate that the hierarchically nanostructured NiTe@CoxSy composites can serve as a prospective candidate electrode; but also develop a novel strategy about how to achieve high-performance stockpile equipment by rationale designing a desirable nanostructures.

Abstract
In order to achieve a sustainable future, researchers must continue to research improved electrode materials. Considering the high electronic conductivity, versatile redox activity, and enhanced energy storage performance, nanostructures have been employed as a novel electrode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and supercapacitors. Herein, carbon-coated selenium-rich trimetallic selenide (Cu2 NiSnSe4 @C) nanoparticles (NPs) as an efficient electrode material in energy storage devices are prepared. The prepared core-shell Cu2 NiSnSe4 @C NPs electrode is employed as an anode material for LIBs, which demonstrated a high reversible specific capacity of 988.46 mA h g-1 over 100 cycles at 0.1 A g-1 with good rate capability. Additionally, the core-shell Cu2 NiSnSe4 @C NPs electrode exhibited an outstanding capacity of 202.5 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1 even after 10 000 cycles. Exploiting the synergistic characteristics, the core-shell Cu2 NiSnSe4 @C NPs material is also investigated as a battery-type electrode for hybrid supercapacitors. The assembled hybrid supercapacitor with Cu2 NiSnSe4 @C NPs and activated carbon showed excellent rate capability including high power (5597.77 W kg-1 ) and energy (64.26 Wh kg-1 ) densities. Considering the simple synthesis and enhanced energy storage properties, carbon-coated selenium-rich trimetallic selenide can be used as a durable electrode material for practical energy storage devices.

Abstract
To enhance the performance of transition metal chalcogenide composite electrode material, a key point is a composite design and preparation based on the synergistic effect between the oxide and selenide materials. With a facile 'one step template-annealing' step, Ni3Se4, Ni0.6Zn0.4O and ZnO are simultaneously synthesized, by 500 °C annealing. With the increase of annealing temperature from 350 °C to 600 °C, nickel selenides change from NiSe2to Ni3Se4to NiSe. The charge storage capacity increases first and then decreases with the increase of annealing temperature, and the 500 °C annealing obtained three compound composite Ni3Se4/Ni0.6Zn0.4O/ZnO (NNZ-500) nanoparticle material displayed a high specific capacitance of 1089.2 F g-1at 1 A g-1, and excellent cycle stability of 99.8% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles at 5 A g-1. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled with NNZ-500 as the positive electrode material and activated carbon as the negative electrode material. This kind of asymmetric supercapacitor demonstrated a high energy density of 53.4 Wh kg-1at 819.0 W kg-1, and cycle stability with 98.6% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles. This material preparation approach provides great potential for the future development of high performance transition metal composite electrode materials in energy storage applications.

Abstract
Transition-metal chalcogenides have emerged as a promising class of materials for energy storage applications due to their earth abundance, high theoretical capacity, and high electrical conductivity. Herein, we introduce a facile and one-pot electrodeposition method to prepare high-performance nickel selenide NixSey (0.5 ≤ x/y ≤ 1.5) nanostructures (specific capacity = 180.3 mA h g-1 at 1 A g-1). The as-synthesized nickel selenide (NS) nanostructure is however converted to other polymorphs of nickel selenide including orthorhombic NiSe2, trigonal Ni3Se2, hexagonal NiSe, and orthorhombic Ni6Se5 over cycling. Interestingly, NiSe2 and Ni3Se2 polymorphs that display a more metallic character and superior energy storage performance are the predominant phases after a few hundred cycles. We fabricated a hybrid device using activated carbon (AC) as a supercapacitor-type negative electrode and NS as a high-rate battery-type positive electrode (AC||NS). This hybrid device provides a high specific energy of 71 W h kg-1, an excellent specific power of up to 31 400 W kg-1, and exceptional cycling stability (80% retention of the initial capacity after 20 000 cycles). The higher energy storage performance of the device is a result of the development of high-performance NiSe2 and Ni3Se2 polymorphs. Moreover, the reduction of the critical dimension of the NS particles to the nanoscale partially induces an extrinsic pseudocapacitive behavior that improves the rate capability and durability of the device. We also explored the origin of the superior energy storage performance of the NS polymorphs using density functional theory calculations in terms of the computed density of states around the Fermi level, electrical conductivity, and quantum capacitance that follows the trend NiSe2 > Ni3Se2 > NiSe > Ni6Se5. The present study thus provides an appealing approach for tailoring the phase composition of NS as an alternative to the commonly used templated synthesis methods.

Abstract
Tailoring the electronic structure of nanomaterials by constructing core-shell heterostruture is a compelling strategy to design novel electrode materials with modified physiochemical properties for supercapacitors with improved performance. Herein, for the first time, we in situ fabricate iron nickel selenide (FeNiSe2)@nickel cobalt sulfide (Ni4.5Co4.5S8) core-shell nanosheet arrays on carbon cloth by an electrodeposition approach and a selenization treatment. This three-dimensional hierarchcial porous framework formed by plentiful interconnected nanosheets can expose numerous redox active sites with varied oxidation states and provide a conductive and porous skeleton for rapid ion/electrolyte ions transport. Benefiting from its modulated electronic structure and synergetic effect of metal-like FeNiSe2 and Ni4.5Co4.5S8, the as-synthesized FeNiSe2@Ni4.5Co4.5S8 electrode displays a large specific capacity of 236.9 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1, remarkable rate capability with 80.6% capacity retention at 20 A g-1, and stable cyclic performance, which are superior to those of pure FeNiSe2 and Ni4.5Co4.5S8 electrodes. Besides, the assembled FeNiSe2@Ni4.5Co4.5S8//porous carbon hybrid supercapacitor device offers an energy density of 69.0 Wh kg-1 at 799.2 W kg-1, and exceptional cycling stability with 91.2% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles. This work offers a synthetic strategy to explore core-shell electrode materials with tunable architecture and morphology for high-performance energy storage devices.

Abstract
Sluggish kinetics and poor structural stability are two main obstacles hampering the exploration of transition metal selenides (TMSs) for supercapacitor. Developing a reasonable core-shell heterostructure with unique morphology is an effective approach to resolve these issues. Herein, a core-shell cobalt iron selenide (CoFe2Se4) @ cobalt nickel carbonate hydroxide (CoNi-CH) heterostructure is directly fabricated on carbon cloth via an electrodeposition method followed by a hydrothermal reaction. In this well-defined heterostructure, one-dimensional (1D) CoFe2Se4 nanowires function as the cores and CoNi-CH nanowires as the shells, which combines the merits of highly conductive CoFe2Se4 for rapid electron transfer and highly electroactive CoNi-CH for multiple redox reactions. Further, the intimate interaction between CoNi-CH and CoFe2Se4 realizes large surface area with hierarchical network and generates rich heterointerfaces with modified the electronic structure. By virtue of its facile 1D-on-1D nanoarchitecture and synergistic effect, the CoFe2Se4@CoNi-CH electrode delivers a increased specific capacity of 218.6 mAh g-1 at 1 A-1 and enhanced rate capability (65.5% at 20 A g-1) compared with pure CoFe2Se4 and CoNi-CH. Besides, a hybrid supercapacitor is established by coupling CoFe2Se4@CoNi-CH cathode and porous carbon anode, which enjoys a maximum energy density of 67.3 Wh kg-1 at 765.9 W kg-1 and prominent durability with 85.4% of capacity retention over 20,000 cycles.

Abstract
Potassium ion energy storage devices are competitive candidates for grid-scale energy storage applications owing to the abundancy and cost-effectiveness of potassium (K) resources, the low standard redox potential of K/K+, and the high ionic conductivity in K-salt-containing electrolytes. However, the sluggish reaction dynamics and poor structural instability of battery-type anodes caused by the insertion/extraction of large K+ ions inhibit the full potential of K ion energy storage systems. Extensive efforts have been devoted to the exploration of promising anode materials. This Review begins with a brief introduction of the operation principles and performance indicators of typical K ion energy storage systems and significant advances in different types of battery-type anode materials, including intercalation-, mixed surface-capacitive-/intercalation-, conversion-, alloy-, mixed conversion-/alloy-, and organic-type materials. Subsequently, host-guest relationships are discussed in correlation with the electrochemical properties, underlying mechanisms, and critical issues faced by each type of anode material concerning their implementation in K ion energy storage systems. Several promising optimization strategies to improve the K+ storage performance are highlighted. Finally, perspectives on future trends are provided, which are aimed at accelerating the development of K ion energy storage systems.

Abstract
Novel core-shell nanostructure electrodes benefit from the excellent properties of their constituent materials, as well as the synergy between them. However, it is challenging to fabricate such structures efficiently. In this study, NiSe nanorods were fabricated using Ni foam as the conductive substrate and reactant via a one-step hydrothermal process, and Ni(OH)2nanosheets were coated on the surface of the nanorods via one-step electrodeposition. The effect of the structure and morphology on the properties of the material was explored using scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electrochemical technology. The obtained core-shell NiSe/Ni(OH)2exhibited an areal capacity of 1.89 mAh cm-2at a current density of 5 mA cm-2. The assembled NiSe/Ni(OH)2//AC hybrid supercapacitor exhibited excellent energy and power densities, indicating that NiSe/Ni(OH)2has great potential for use as a battery-type electrode in energy storage systems.

Abstract
Electrochemical capacitors charge and discharge more rapidly than batteries over longer cycles, but their practical applications remain limited due to their significantly lower energy densities. Pseudocapacitors and hybrid capacitors have been developed to extend Ragone plots to higher energy density values, but they are also limited by the insufficient breadth of options for electrode materials, which require materials that store alkali metal cations such as Li+ and Na+. Herein, we report a comprehensive and systematic review of emerging anion storage materials for performance- and functionality-oriented applications in electrochemical and battery-capacitor hybrid devices. The operating principles and types of dual-ion and whole-anion storage in electrochemical and hybrid capacitors are addressed along with the classification, thermodynamic and kinetic aspects, and associated interfaces of anion storage materials in various aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes. The charge storage mechanism, structure-property correlation, and electrochemical features of anion storage materials are comprehensively discussed. The recent progress in emerging anion storage materials is also discussed, focusing on high-performance applications, such as dual-ion- and whole-anion-storing electrochemical capacitors in a symmetric or hybrid manner, and functional applications including micro- and flexible capacitors, desalination, and salinity cells. Finally, we present our perspective on the current impediments and future directions in this field.

Abstract
Constructing nanostructures with multi-components and delicate architecture exhibits huge potential to improve the lithium storage performance of electrodes. Herein, we report a novel yolk-double-shell structure with complex chemical compositions. Starting with a core-shell structured Co-ZIF@ZnCo-ZIF as a precursor via a simple selenization process, yolk-double-shell polyhedra that assembled by nanosized Co0.85Se@N-doped carbon as the yolk and the first shell and nanosized Co0.85Se@N-doped carbon and ZnSe@N-doped carbon hetero-components as the second shell (marked as Co0.85Se@NC/ZnSe@NC-YDS) are synthesized. Benefiting from their multiple structural advantages, such as high surface area, large pore volume, uniform carbon coating, and intimate heterostructures, Co0.85Se@NC/ZnSe@NC-YDS exhibits high reversible capacity (1047 mA h g-1) and good rate capability for lithium storage. More importantly, even after 3000 cycles at 5.0 A g-1, an impressive reversible capacity of 468 mA h g-1 is retained with no capacity decay. After repeated discharge/charge processes, the integrated yolk-double-shell structure is still reserved, due to its structural and compositional advantages, which contribute to the enhanced rate and cycling performance.
