Factors affecting the efficiency of a bioelectrochemical system: a review

Enhancing bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil by sophorolipids-modified biochar: Combined metagenomic and metabolomic analyses

In this study, sophorolipids (SLs)-modified biochar (BC-SLs) was used to enhance the bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) contaminated soil. The biodegradation rate of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) by BC-SLs and BC treatments were 62.86 % and 52.64 % after 60 days of remediation experiments, respectively, higher than non-biochar treatment group (24.09 %). The metagenomic analysis showed that the abundance of petroleum-degrading bacteria Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria were increased by 3.8 % and 5.3 %, respectively in BC-SLs treatment, and the abundance of functional genes for PHs degradation, such as alkB, nidA and pcaG, were significantly increased by 12.85 %, 30.08 % and 21.01 %, respectively. The metabolomic analysis showed that BC-SLs facilitated the metabolic process of PHs, the microbial metabolism of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) became more active. Fatty acid degradation and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) degradation were up-regulated, indicating the promoting effect of the BC-SLs for PHs metabolism. The combined metagenomic and metabolomic analysis demonstrated the strong positive correlations between PHs metabolites and PHs-degrading bacteria, such as lauric acid vs. Actinobacteria, benzoic vs. Proteobacteria. The strong positive correlations between PHs metabolites and PHs-degrading genes were also observed, such as o-ehyltoluene vs. nahD, 4-isopropylbenzoic acid vs. etbAa. The modification of biochar with SLs increased the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of biochar. Meanwhile, the emulsification and solubilization of SLs promoted the bioavailability of PHs. The effects of BC-SLs on the nitrogen cycle during PHs remediation showed that it facilitated the accumulation of nitrogen-fixing genes, promoted nitrification but inhibited denitrification process. This study confirms that the application of BC-SLs is an effective remediation of PHs contamination and a sustainable method for controlling agricultural waste resources.

Niche construction in a bioelectrochemical system with 3D-electrodes for efficient and thorough biodechlorination

The design of bioelectrochemical system based on the principle of niche construction, offers a prospective pathway for achieving efficient and thorough biodechlorination in groundwater. This study designed a single-chamber microbial electrolysis cell, with porous three-dimensional (3D) electrodes introduced, to accelerate the niche construction process of functional communities. This approach allowed the growth of various bacteria capable of simultaneously degrading 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) and its refractory intermediates, 4-chlorophenol (4CP). The 3D-electrodes provided abundant attachment sites for diverse microbes with a high initial Shannon index (3.4), and along the degradation progress, functional bacteria (Hydrogenoanaerobacterium and Rhodococcus erythropolis for DCP-degrading, Sphingobacterium hotanense for 4CP-degrading and Delftia tsuruhatensis for phenol-degrading) constructed their niches. Applying an external voltage (0.6 V) further increased the selective pressure and niche construction pace, as well as provided 'micro-oxidation' site on the electrode surface, thereby achieving the degradation of 4CP and mineralization of phenol. The porous electrodes could also adsorb contaminants and narrow their interaction distance with microbes, which benefited the degradation efficiency. Thus a 10-fold increase in the overall mineralization of DCP was achieved. This study constructed a novel bioelectrochemical system for achieving efficient and thorough biodechlorination, which was suitable for in situ bioremediation of groundwater.

The corncobs-loaded iron nanoparticles enhanced mechanism of denitrification performance in microalgal-bacterial aggregates system when treating low COD/TN wastewater

To improve denitrification efficiency of microalgal-bacterial aggregates (MABAs) when treating low carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio wastewater, CK (the biological control), C1 (untreated corncobs), C2 (alkali-treated corncobs), CFe1 (C1 loaded iron nanoparticles) and CFe2 (C2 loaded iron nanoparticles) five groups of experiments were installed under artificial light (1600 lm). After 36 h of experiment, NO3--N was almost completely converted in CFe1 following by CFe2 when the initial concentration was 60.1 mg/L, whose NO3--N conversion rates were 6.2 and 3.4 times faster than the CK group, respectively. The result showed that the corncobs-loaded iron nanoparticles (CFe1, CFe2) had the potential to promote denitrification process and the CFe1 was more effective. Meanwhile, the CFe1 and CFe2 resulted in a decreased content in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion because iron nanoparticles (Fes) promoted electron transport and alleviated the nitrate stress. Moreover, the electrochemical analysis of EPS showed that the corncobs and corncobs-loaded iron nanoparticles improved the electron transport rate and redox active substances production. The increase in electron transport activity (ETSA), adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) also indicated that the CFe1 and CFe2 promoted microbial metabolic activity and the electron transport rate in MABAs. In addition, the CFe1 group enhanced the enrichment of Proteobacteria, Patescibacteria, Chlorophyta and Ignavibacteriae, which was contributed to the nitrogen removal performance of MABAs. In summary, the enhancement mechanism of corncobs-loaded iron nanoparticles on denitrification process of MABAs was depicted through EPS secretion, electrochemical characteristics, microbial metabolic activity and microbial community. The article provides a viable program for enhancing the denitrification performance of MABAs when treating low C/N wastewater.

The exploitation of bio-electrochemical system and microplastics removal: Possibilities and perspectives

Microplastic (MP) pollution has caused severe concern due to its harmful effect on human beings and ecosystems. Existing MP removal methods face many obstacles, such as high cost, high energy consumption, low efficiency, release of toxic chemicals, etc. Thus, it is crucial to find appropriate and sustainable methods to replace common MP removal approaches. Bio-electrochemical system (BES) is a sustainable clean energy technology that has been successfully applied to wastewater treatment, seawater desalination, metal removal, energy production, biosensors, etc. However, research reports on BES technology to eliminate MP pollution are limited. This paper reviews the mechanism, hazards, and common treatment methods of MP removal and discusses the application of BES systems to improve MP removal efficiency and sustainability. Firstly, the characteristics and limitations of common MP removal techniques are systematically summarized. Then, the potential application of BES technology in MP removal is explored. Furthermore, the feasibility and stability of the potential BES MP removal application are critically evalauted while recommendations for further research are proposed.

Potential application of bioelectrochemical systems in cold environments

Globally, more than half of the world's regions and populations inhabit psychrophilic and seasonally cold environments. Lower temperatures can inhibit the metabolic activity of microorganisms, thereby restricting the application of traditional biological treatment technologies. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES), which combine electrochemistry and biocatalysis, can enhance the resistance of microorganisms to unfavorable environments through electrical stimulation, thus showing promising applications in low-temperature environments. In this review, we focus on the potential application of BES in such environments, given the relatively limited research in this area due to temperature limitations. We select microbial fuel cells (MFC), microbial electrolytic cells (MEC), and microbial electrosynthesis cells (MES) as the objects of analysis and compare their operational mechanisms and application fields. MFC mainly utilizes the redox potential of microorganisms during substance metabolism to generate electricity, while MEC and MES promote the degradation of refractory substances by augmenting the electrode potential with an applied voltage. Subsequently, we summarize and discuss the application of these three types of BES in low-temperature environments. MFC can be employed for environmental remediation as well as for biosensors to monitor environmental quality, while MEC and MES are primarily intended for hydrogen and methane production. Additionally, we explore the influencing factors for the application of BES in low-temperature environments, including operational parameters, electrodes and membranes, external voltage, oxygen intervention, and reaction devices. Finally, the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility analyses reveal that the application of BES in low-temperature environments has great potential for development.

Pipeline Terracotta Microbial Fuel Cell: Organic Content Biosensor and Energy Harvesting Device Integrated in Wastewater Pipeline

Wastewater pipelines are present everywhere in urban areas. Wastewater is a preferable fuel for renewable electricity generation from microbial fuel cells. Here, we created an integrated microbial fuel cell pipeline (MFCP) that could be connected to wastewater pipelines and work as an organic content biosensor and energy harvesting device at domestic waste-treatment plants. The MFCP used a pipeline-like terracotta-based membrane, which provided structural support for the MFCP. In addition, the anode and cathode were attached to the inside and outside of the terracotta membrane, respectively. Co-MnO2 was used as a catalyst to improve the performance of the MFCP cathode. The experimental data showed a good linear relationship between wastewater chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration and the MFCP output voltage in a COD range of 200-1900 mg/L. This result implies the potential of using the MFCP as a sensor to detect the organic content of the wastewater inside the wastewater pipeline. Furthermore, the MFCP can be used as a long-lasting sustainable energy harvester with a maximum power density of 400 mW/m2 harvested from 1900 mg/L COD wastewater at 25 °C.

Electromagnetic Field Drives the Bioelectrocatalysis of γ-Fe2O3-Coated Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 to Boost Extracellular Electron Transfer

The microbial hybrid system modified by magnetic nanomaterials can enhance the interfacial electron transfer and energy conversion under the stimulation of a magnetic field. However, the bioelectrocatalytic performance of a hybrid system still needs to be improved, and the mechanism of magnetic field-induced bioelectrocatalytic enhancements is still unclear. In this work, γ-Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticles were coated on a Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 cell surface and followed by placing in an electromagnetic field. The results showed that the electromagnetic field can greatly boost the extracellular electron transfer, and the oxidation peak current of CN32@γ-Fe2O3 increased to 2.24 times under an electromagnetic field. The enhancement mechanism is mainly due to the fact that the surface modified microorganism provides an elevated contact area for the high microbial catalytic activity of the outer cell membrane's cytochrome, while the magnetic nanoparticles provide a networked interface between the cytoplasm and the outer membrane for boosting the fast multidimensional electron transport path in the magnetic field. This work sheds fresh scientific light on the rational design of magnetic-field-coupled electroactive microorganisms and the fundamentals of an optimal interfacial structure for a fast electron transfer process toward an efficient bioenergy conversion.

Bioaugmentation and vermicompost facilitated the hydrocarbon bioremediation: scaling up from lab to field for petroleum-contaminated soils

The biodegradation of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in soil is very challenging due to the complex recalcitrant nature of hydrocarbon, hydrophobicity, indigenous microbial adaptation and competition, and harsh environmental conditions. This work further confirmed that limited natural attenuation of petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) (15% removal) necessitates efficient bioremediation strategies. Hence, a scaling-up experiment for testing and optimizing the use of biopiles for bioremediation of TPH polluted soils was conducted with three 500-kg pilots of polluted soil, and respective treatments were implemented: including control soil (CT), bioaugmentation and vermicompost treatment (BAVC), and a combined application of BAVC along with bioelectrochemical snorkels (BESBAVC), all maintained at 40% field capacity. This study identified that at pilot scale level, a successful application of BAVC treatment can achieve 90.3% TPH removal after 90 days. BAVC's effectiveness stemmed from synergistic mechanisms. Introduced microbial consortia were capable of TPH degradation, while vermicompost provided essential nutrients, enhanced aeration, and, potentially, acted as a biosorbent. Hence, it can be concluded that the combined application of BAVC significantly enhances TPH removal compared to natural attenuation. While the combined application of a bioelectrochemical snorkel (BES) with BAVC also showed a significant TPH removal, it did not differ statistically from the individual application of BAVC, under applied conditions. Further research is needed to optimize BES integration with BAVC for broader applicability. This study demonstrates BAVC as a scalable and mechanistically sound approach for TPH bioremediation in soil.

Environmental pollution removal using electrostimulation of microorganisms by alternative current

The entrance of some toxic and hazardous chemical agents such as antibiotics, pesticides, and herbicides into the environment can cause various problems to human health and the environment. In recent years, researchers have considered the use of electrostimulation in the processes of microbial metabolism and biological systems for the treatment of pollutants in the environment. Although several electrostimulation reports have been presented for pollutant removal, little attention has been paid to alternative current (AC) biostimulation. This study presents a systematic review of microbial electrostimulation using bioelectrochemical systems supplied with AC. The utilization of alternating current bioelectrochemical systems (ACBESs) has some advantages such as the provide of appropriate active biofilms in the electrodes due to the cyclical nature of the current and energy transfer in an appropriate manner on the electrode surfaces. Moreover, the ACBESs can reduce hydraulic time (HRT) under optimal conditions and reduce the cost of converting electricity using AC. In microbial electrostimulation, amplitude (AMPL), waveform, C/N, and current have a significant effect on increasing the removal efficiency of the pollutants. The obtained results of the meta-analysis illustrated that various pollutants such as phenol, antibiotics, and nitrate have been removed in an acceptable range of 96% using the ACBESs. Therefore, microbial electrostimulation using AC is a promising technology for the decomposition and removal of various pollutants. Moreover, the ACBESs could provide new opportunities for promoting various bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) for the production of hydrogen or methane.

Graphene Fermi Level-Guided Attachment of Single Exoelectrogens and Induced Interfacial Doping

Graphene's exceptional electronic and mechanical properties make it a promising material for bioelectronic applications; however, understanding its interaction with electrogenic bacteria is crucial to harness its full potential. This study investigates the interface between electrogenic bacteria and graphene with Raman spectroscopy by analyzing the distinctive spectral fingerprints to understand electron energy and distribution via this non-destructive and label-free method. We find that the presence of bacteria induces a distinct red-shift in the G peak positions of graphene, indicating electron doping. Correspondingly, the bacteria demonstrate a predilection for attachment on hole-rich sites on the graphene sheet, evidenced by the comparative analysis of pre- and post-spatial Raman mapping, revealing their consistent presence within the hole-doped 2D peak position range of 2673.89-2675.43 cm-1. This affinity of bacteria is due to the overall higher Fermi level (∼4.9 ± 0.2 eV) of these regions, which favors electron transfer. These findings demonstrate the potential of leveraging the graphene's electronic properties in engineering graphene-based biosensors. Tuning graphene's charge carrier concentration would enable the promotion or prevention of bacterial attachment, facilitating capture of specific bacteria or development of antimicrobial surfaces. This approach enables clean, efficient, and accurate study of graphene-based bacterial systems, driving significant advancements and enhancing their performance.

Effect of pH on metabolic pathway shift in fermentation and electro-fermentation of xylose by Clostridium autoethanogenum

Clostridium autoethanogenum can to convert waste gases (CO2, CO, H2) and xylose from hydrolyzed biomass into acetate, lactate, formate, ethanol and 2,3-butanediol, being a candidate for the transformation of waste streams of lignocellulosic biorefineries. Electro-fermentation (EF) modify the pattern of traditional fermentations resulting in improved product yields as has been shown when using Clostridium strains. The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of pH on microbial growth and product distribution during fermentation and EF of xylose by C. autoethanogenum DSM10061. Fermentation and EF were carried out in a H-type reactor at three controlled pH: 5.0, 5.5 and 5.8, and at a fixed potential of -600 mV (versus Ag/AgCl) in the EF. The experiments showed that maximum biomass concentration increased as the pH increased in fermentation and EF. In accordance with maximum biomass reached, the highest substrate conversion was observed at pH 5.8 for both systems, with 76.80 % in fermentation and 96.18 % in EF. Moreover, the highest concentrations of acetic acid (1.41 ± 0.07 g L-1) and ethanol (1.45 ± 0.15 g L-1) were obtained at the end of cultures in the EF at pH 5.8. The production of lactic and formic acid decreased by the application of the external potential regardless of the pH value, reaching the lowest productivity at pH 5.8. In contrast, the specific productivity of acetic acid and ethanol was lower in both fermentation and EF at the lowest pH. Furthermore, the presence of 0.06 g L-1 of 2,3-butanediol was only detected in EF at pH 5.8. The results revealed that EF modulated microbial metabolism, which can be explained by a possible increased generation of NADP+/NADPH cofactors, which would redirect the metabolic pathway to more reduced products.

Application of biochar on soil bioelectrochemical remediation: behind roles, progress, and potential

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) that combine electrochemistry with biological methods have gained attention in the remediation of polluted environments, including wastewater, sludge, sediments, and soils. The most attractive advantage of BESs is that the solid electrode is used as an inexhaustible electron acceptor or donor, and biocurrent directly converted from organics can afford the reaction energy of contaminant breakdown, crossing the internal energy barrier of endothermic degradation, which achieves a continuous biodegradation process without the simultaneous use of exogenetic chemicals and bioelectricity recovery. However, soil BESs are hindered by expensive electrode materials, difficult pollutant and electron transfer, low microbial competitive activity, and biocompatibility in contamination remediation. Fortunately, introducing biochar into soil BESs could reveal a high potential in addressing these BES inadequacies. The characteristics of biochar, e.g., conductivity, transferability, high specific surface area, high porosity, large functional groups, and biocompatibility, can improve the performance of soil BESs. In fact, biochar not only carries electrons but also transfers nutrients, pollutants, and even bacteria by facilitating transmission in the bioelectric field of BESs. Consequently, the abilities of biochar make for better functionality of BESs. This review collates information on the roles, application, and progress of biochar in soil BESs, and future prospects are given. It is beneficial for environmental researchers and engineers to extend BES application in environmental remediation and to assist the progress of carbon sequestration and emission reduction based on the inertia of biochar and the blocking of electron flow to form methane.

Towards a new understanding of bioelectrochemical systems from the perspective of microecosystems: A critical review

Bioelectrochemical system (BES) holds promise for sustainable energy generation and wastewater treatment. The microbial communities, as the core of BES, play a crucial role in its performance, thus needing to be systematically studied. However, researches considering microbial communities in BES from an ecological perspective are limited. This review provided a comprehensive summary of the BES with special emphasis on microecological principles, commencing with the dynamic formation and succession of the microbial communities. It also clarified the intricate interspecies relationships and quorum-sensing mechanisms regulated by dominant species. Furthermore, this review addressed the crucial themes in BES-related researches on ecological processes, including growth patterns, ecological structures, and defense strategies against external disturbances. By offering this novel perspective, it would contribute to enhancing the understanding of BES-centered technologies and facilitating future research in this field.

Ex-situ electrochemical characterisation of fixed-bed denitrification biocathodes: A promising strategy to improve bioelectrochemical denitrification

The worldwide issue of nitrate-contaminated groundwater requires practical solutions, and electro-bioremediation offers a promising and sustainable treatment. While it has shown potential benefits, there is room for improvement in treatment rates, which is crucial for its further and effective implementation. In this field, electrochemical characterisation is a valuable tool for providing the foundation for optimising bioelectrochemical reactors, but applying it in fixed-bed reactors is challenging due to its high intrinsic electrical resistance. To overcome these challenges, this study employed the easy and swift eClamp methodology to screen different process parameters and their influence on the performance of fixed-bed denitrifying biocathodes composed of granular graphite. Granules were extracted and studied ex-situ under controlled conditions while varying key operational parameters (such as pH, temperature, and nitrate concentration). In the studied biocathode, the extracellular electron transfer associated with denitrification was identified as the primary limiting step with a formal potential of -0.225 ± 0.007 V vs. Ag/AgCl sat. KCl at pH 7 and 25 °C. By varying the nitrate concentration, it was revealed that the biocathode exhibits a strong affinity for nitrate (KMapp of 0.7 ± 0.2 mg N-NO3- L-1). The maximum denitrification rate was observed at a pH of 6 and a temperature of 35 °C. Furthermore, the findings highlight a 2e-/1H+ transfer, which holds considerable implications for the energy metabolism of bioelectrochemical denitrifiers. These compiled results provide valuable insights into the understanding of denitrifying biocathodes and enable the improvement and prediction of their performance.

Effects of pH on simultaneous Cr(VI) and p-chlorophenol removal and electrochemical performance in Leersia hexandra constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell

Cr(VI) and p-chlorophenol (4-CP) are common pollutants in the aquatic environment but are difficult to degrade and have complex toxic effects. A downflow Leersia hexandra microbial fuel cell (DLCW-MFC) system was constructed to purify Cr(VI) and 4-CP polluted wastewater, as well as to investigate the effects of different pHs on Cr(VI) and 4-CP removal, electrochemical performance, physiological and biochemical responses, and Cr enrichment status of L. hexandra. The results showed that the DLCW-MFC had the highest Cr(VI) and 4-CP removal rates at pH 6.5, which were 99.0% and 78.6%, respectively. At the same time, 543 mV output voltage and 72.25 mW/m2 power density of the system were generated at pH 6.5, which were better than those at pH 7.4 and pH 5.8. The electrochemical performance result showed that pH 6.5 enhanced charge transfer ability and ion diffusion ability of the system. pH 6.5 also promoted growth and photosynthesis, and enhanced the Cr enrichment capacity (4.56 mg/10 plants) of L. hexandra. These results demonstrate that pH 6.5 was the optimum pH for the DLCW-MFC synchronous treatment of Cr(VI) and 4-CP as well as the generation of electricity. The DLCW-MFC designed in this study will provide a reference for purifying polluted wastewater and generating electricity.

Investigation of microbial fuel cell performance based on the nickel thin film modified electrodes

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a self-sustaining and environmentally friendly system for the simultaneous was tewater treatment and bioelectricity generation. The type and material of the electrode are critical factors that can influence the efficiency of this treatment process. In this study, graphite plates and carbon felt were modified through the electrodeposition of nickel followed by the formation of a biofilm, resulting in conductive bio-anode thin film electrodes with enhanced power generation capacity. The structural and morphological properties of the electrode surfaces were characterized using X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, elemental mapping, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy techniques. Maximum voltage, current density, and power generation were investigated using a dual-chamber MFC equipped with a Nafion 117 membrane and bio-nickel-doped carbon felt (bio-Ni@CF) and bio-nickel-doped graphite plate (bio-Ni@GP) electrodes under constant temperature conditions. The polarization and power curves obtained using different anode electrodes revealed that the maximum voltage, power and current density achieved with the bio-Ni@CF electrode were 468.0 mV, 130.72 mW/m2 and 760.0 mA/m2 respectively. Moreover, the modified electrodes demonstrated appropriate stability and resistance during successful runs. These results suggest that nickel-doped carbon-based electrodes can serve as suitable and stable supported catalysts and conductors for improving efficiency and increasing power generation in MFCs.

The aggregated biofilm dominated by Delftia tsuruhatensis enhances the removal efficiency of 2,4-dichlorophenol in a bioelectrochemical system

Bioelectrochemical system is a prospective strategy in organic-contaminated groundwater treatment, while few studies clearly distinguish the mechanisms of adsorption or biodegradation in this process, especially when dense biofilm is formed. This study employed a single chamber microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) with two three-dimensional electrodes for removing a typical organic contaminant, 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) from groundwater, which inoculated with anaerobic bacteria derived from sewage treatment plant. Compared with the single biodegradation system without electrodes, the three-dimensional electrodes with a high surface enabled an increase of alpha diversity of the microbial community (increased by 52.6% in Shannon index), and provided adaptive ecological niche for more bacteria. The application of weak voltage (0.6 V) furtherly optimized the microbial community structure, and promoted the aggregation of microorganisms with the formation of dense biofilm. Desorption experiment proved that the contaminants were removed from the groundwater mainly via adsorption by the biofilm rather than biodegradation, and compared with the reactor without electricity, the bioelectrochemical system increased the adsorption capacity from 50.0% to 74.5%. The aggregated bacteria on the surface of electrodes were mainly dominated by Delftia tsuruhatensis (85.0%), which could secrete extracellular polymers and has a high adsorption capacity (0.30 mg/g electrode material) for the contaminants. We found that a bioelectrochemical system with a three-dimensional electrode could stimulate the formation of dense biofilm and remove the organic contaminants as well as their possible more toxic degradation intermediates via adsorption. This study provides important guidance for applying bioelectrochemical system in groundwater or wastewater treatment.

Energy generation from bioelectrochemical techniques: Concepts, reactor configurations and modeling approaches

The process industries play a significant role in boosting the economy of any nation. However, poor management in several industries has been posing worrisome threats to an environment that was previously immaculate. As a result, the untreated waste and wastewater discarded by many industries contain abundant organic matter and other toxic chemicals. It is more likely that they disrupt the proper functioning of the water bodies by perturbing the sustenance of many species of flora and fauna occupying the different trophic levels. The simultaneous threats to human health and the environment, as well as the global energy problem, have encouraged a number of nations to work on the development of renewable energy sources. Hence, bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have attracted the attention of several stakeholders throughout the world on many counts. The bioelectricity generated from BESs has been recognized as a clean fuel. Besides, this technology has advantages such as the direct conversion of substrate to electricity, and efficient operation at ambient and even low temperatures. An overview of the BESs, its important operating parameters, bioremediation of industrial waste and wastewaters, biodegradation kinetics, and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling to describe substrate removal/elimination and energy production of the BESs are discussed. When considering the potential for use in the industrial sector, certain technical issues of BES design and the principal microorganisms/biocatalysts involved in the degradation of waste are also highlighted in this review.

Discussion on Secure Standard Network of Sensors Powered by Microbial Fuel Cells

Everyday tasks use sensors to monitor and provide information about processes in different scenarios, such as monitoring devices in manufacturing or homes. Sensors need to communicate, with or without wires, while providing secure information. Power can be derived from various energy sources, such as batteries, electrical power grids, and energy harvesting. Energy harvesting is a promising way to provide a sustainable and renewable source to power sensors by scavenging and converting energy from ambient energy sources. However, low energy is harvested through these methods. Therefore, it is becoming a challenge to design and deploy wireless sensor networks while ensuring the sensors have enough power to perform their tasks and communicate with each other through careful management and optimization, matching energy supply with demand. For this reason, data cryptography and authentication are needed to protect sensor communication. This paper studies how energy harvested with microbial fuel cells can be employed in algorithms used in data protection during sensor communication.

An overview of bioelectrokinetic and bioelectrochemical remediation of petroleum-contaminated soils

The global problem of petroleum contamination in soils seriously threatens environmental safety and human health. Current studies have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of bioelectrokinetic and bioelectrochemical remediation of petroleum-contaminated soils due to their easy implementation, environmental benignity, and enhanced removal efficiency compared to bioremediation. This paper reviewed recent progress and development associated with bioelectrokinetic and bioelectrochemical remediation of petroleum-contaminated soils. The working principles, removal efficiencies, affecting factors, and constraints of the two technologies were thoroughly summarized and discussed. The potentials, challenges, and future perspectives were also deliberated to shed light on how to overcome the barriers and realize widespread implementation on large scales of these two technologies.

Application of Bioelectrochemical Systems and Anaerobic Additives in Wastewater Treatment: A Conceptual Review

The interspecies electron transfer (IET) between microbes and archaea is the key to how the anaerobic digestion process performs. However, renewable energy technology that utilizes the application of a bioelectrochemical system together with anaerobic additives such as magnetite-nanoparticles can promote both direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) as well as indirect interspecies electron transfer (IIET). This has several advantages, including higher removal of toxic pollutants present in municipal wastewater, higher biomass to renewable energy conversion, and greater electrochemical efficiencies. This review explores the synergistic influence of bioelectrochemical systems and anaerobic additives on the anaerobic digestion of complex substrates such as sewage sludge. The review discussions present the mechanisms and limitations of the conventional anaerobic digestion process. In addition, the applicability of additives in syntrophic, metabolic, catalytic, enzymatic, and cation exchange activities of the anaerobic digestion process are highlighted. The synergistic effect of bio-additives and operational factors of the bioelectrochemical system is explored. It is elucidated that a bioelectrochemical system coupled with nanomaterial additives can increase biogas-methane potential compared to anaerobic digestion. Therefore, the prospects of a bioelectrochemical system for wastewater require research attention.

Multivariate landscapes constructed by Bayesian estimation over five hundred microbial electrochemical time profiles

Data science emerges as a promising approach for studying and optimizing complex multivariable phenomena, such as the interaction between microorganisms and electrodes. However, there have been limited reports on a bioelectrochemical system that can produce a reliable database until date. Herein, we developed a high-throughput platform with low deviation to apply two-dimensional (2D) Bayesian estimation for electrode potential and redox-active additive concentration to optimize microbial current production (I c ). A 96-channel potentiostat represents <10% SD for maximum I c . 576 time-I c profiles were obtained in 120 different electrolyte and potentiostatic conditions with two model electrogenic bacteria, Shewanella and Geobacter. Acquisition functions showed the highest performance per concentration for riboflavin over a wide potential range in Shewanella. The underlying mechanism was validated by electrochemical analysis with mutant strains lacking outer-membrane redox enzymes. We anticipate that the combination of data science and high-throughput electrochemistry will greatly accelerate a breakthrough for bioelectrochemical technologies.

Single-cell metagenomics and metagenomics approaches reveal extracellular electron transfer of psychrophilic electroactive biofilms

Revealing the metabolic functions and the extracellular electron transfer (EET) process of psychrophilic electroactive biofilms (PEB) is important for understanding the functional adaptability of electroactive bacteria (EAB) to low temperatures. In this study, single cell sorting (SCS)-based metagenomics sequencing was used to characterize the composition and function of the PEB. Biofilm microbiome analysis showed that Geobacter, with a relative abundance of 62.64%, dominated the PEB enriched in the bioelectrochemical system (BES) at 4 °C. Both the metagenome (MAG) and single-cell metagenome (SCM) revealed that there were no obvious metabolic differences between the original biofilm and the sorted single cells. The presence of genes associated with type IV pilus, c-type cytochromes, and riboflavin indicated that the EET potential was maintained in the PEB at low temperatures. These results suggested that SCM provides an alternative approach to reconstruct the metabolic functions of uncultured and slow-growing EAB.

Ammonium Reactive Migration Process and Functional Bacteria Response along Lateral Runoff Path under Groundwater Exploitation

In order to elucidate the importance of biogeochemical interactions between NH4+ and aquifer media in groundwater runoff paths, a dynamic monitoring section in the riverbank zone, which is most sensitive to environmental characteristics and perpendicular to the flow direction of the Songhua River in northeastern China, was selected for field experiments in this study. The results indicated that the NH4+ concentration decreased gradually along the groundwater runoff path under exploitation conditions. The NH4+ concentrations of J1, J2, and J3 decreased by 8%, 18%, and 22%, respectively, as compared to the starting concentration of 1.3 mg/L. Adsorption of NH4+ by aquifer media at different depths is a monolayer adsorption process in accordance with pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The maximum reduction of NH4+ from the aquifer media from top to bottom was 76%, 67%, 56%, and 42%, respectively. The function and activity of dominant functional bacteria have characteristics of coevolution with the NH4+ transformation process. The main genera in the fluctuation zone are Pseudomonas (8.83%) and Acinetobacter (4.37%), which mainly transform NH4+ by heterotrophic nitrification–aerobic denitrification (HN–AD). The main genera in the saturated zone are Flavobacterium (32.60%) and Sphingobium (3.54%), which mainly transform NH4+ by anaerobic denitrification. The spatial variations of species and abundance for NH4+ transformation functional bacteria decrease by 2.74% and 3.47%, respectively, along groundwater runoff paths. In the vertical and horizontal directions of groundwater runoff, the percentage of adsorption in NH4+ transformation gradually decreased and the percentage of biotransformation gradually increased. The adsorption processes in the O2/NO3− reduction, Fe/Mn reduction, and SO42− reduction zones were 20.7%, 3.6%, and 1.0%, respectively. The corresponding proportions of the biotransformation process were 79.3%, 96.4%, and 99.0%. This research is critical for elucidating the bio-geochemical interaction between NH4+ and aquifer media along the course of groundwater runoff in order to offer a scientific basis for the prevention and management of groundwater nitrogen pollution.

Extremophilic electroactive microorganisms: Promising biocatalysts for bioprocessing applications

Electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) use extracellular electron transfer (EET) processes to access insoluble electron donors or acceptors in cellular respiration. These are used in developing microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) for biosensing and bioelectronics applications and the valorization of liquid and gaseous wastes. EAMs from extreme environments can be useful to overcome the existing limitations of METs operated with non-extreme microorganisms. Studying extreme EAMs is also necessary to improve understanding of respiratory processes involving EET. This article first discusses the advantages of using extreme EAMs in METs and summarizes the diversity of EAMs from different extreme environments. It is followed by a detailed discussion on their use as biocatalysts in various bioprocessing applications via bioelectrochemical systems. Finally, the challenges associated with operating METs under extreme conditions and promising research opportunities on fundamental and applied aspects of extreme EAMs are presented.

Application of Various Machine Learning Models for Process Stability of Bio-Electrochemical Anaerobic Digestion

The application of a machine learning (ML) model to bio-electrochemical anaerobic digestion (BEAD) is a future-oriented approach for improving process stability by predicting performances that have nonlinear relationships with various operational parameters. Five ML models, which included tree-, regression-, and neural network-based algorithms, were applied to predict the methane yield in BEAD reactor. The results showed that various 1-step ahead ML models, which utilized prior data of BEAD performances, could enhance prediction accuracy. In addition, 1-step ahead with retraining algorithm could improve prediction accuracy by 37.3% compared with the conventional multi-step ahead algorithm. The improvement was particularly noteworthy in tree- and regression-based ML models. Moreover, 1-step ahead with retraining algorithm showed high potential of achieving efficient prediction using pH as a single input data, which is plausibly an easier monitoring parameter compared with the other parameters required in bioprocess models.

The characteristic of electrode of degradation of bio-electrochemical system based on in-situ ultrasonic monitoring: Biofilm and ion precipitation

Electrode interface behavior is a decisive factor affecting the performance of bio-electrochemical systems, and traditional monitoring methods cannot provide real-time feedback. Therefore, in situ ultrasonic monitoring was performed to continuously monitor the formation process of electroactive biofilm and salt precipitation on the cathode surface. The results showed that biofilm was attached to the cathode surface first. Then, Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ precipitation gradually invaded the biofilm and accumulated between the cathode and the biofilm. The electrochemical performance of the biofilm adhesion and initial ion invasion process was improved. However, the electrochemical performance of the precipitation layer was decreased, while the operation time increases. In this paper, based on the air cathode scaling analyzing a new method for monitoring the electrode interface of bio-electrochemical system was provided, and the performance was recovered by using reverse electric field.

Microbial fuel cells: a comprehensive review for beginners

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have shown immense potential as a one-stop solution for three major sustainability issues confronting the world today-energy security, global warming and wastewater management. MFCs represent a cross-disciplinary platform for research at the confluence of the natural and engineering sciences. The diversity of variables influencing performance of MFCs has garnered research interest across varied scientific disciplines since the beginning of this century. The increasing number of research publications has made it necessary to keep track of work being carried out by research groups across the globe and consolidate significant findings on a regular basis. Review articles are often the nodal points for beginners who are required to undertake an exploratory survey of literature to identify a suitable research problem. This 'review of reviews' is a ready-reckoner that directs readers to relevant reviews and research articles reporting significant developments in MFC research in the last two decades. The article also highlights the areas needing research attention which when addressed could take this technology a few more steps closer to practical implementation.

Mini-metagenome analysis of psychrophilic electroactive biofilms based on single cell sorting

Understanding the metabolic function of psychrophilic electroactive bacteria is important for the investigation of extracellular electron transfer (EET) mechanisms under low temperatures (4-15 °C). In this study, Raman activated cell ejection coupled high throughput sequencing was used to accurately generate a mini-metagenome of psychrophilic bacterial community. Hierarchical cluster analysis of the Raman spectrum could accurately select the target Geobacter cluster. The high relative abundance of the membrane transport functional genes ftsEX in the biofilm community indicated an adaptation to reduced temperature, which aided survival of the electroactive bacteria under low temperature. The basal metabolism such as citrate cycle and glycolytic pathway maintained the electron pool for the EET process. The identification of iron (III) transport system genes in high abundance indicated their presence in an active metabolic reaction for potential electron transfer process. It showed the potential involvement c-type cytochromes (coxA and cox1) activity in EET. These results indicated that psychrophilic Geobacter had effective EET mediated by c-type cytochromes at low temperatures.

A Novel Design Portable Plugged-Type Soil Microbial Fuel Cell for Bioelectricity Generation

Soil microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) are a promising cost-effective power source for on-demand electricity generation applications. So far, reported SMFC configurations are usually bulky and hard to setup. In this study, a low-cost portable plugged-type SMFC (PSMFC) was designed and fabricated for on-demand micropower generation. The PSMFC can be activated just by plugging into natural wet soil, which is easy to access in the natural condition. The PSMFC uses carbon-based electrodes for cost-effectiveness. After setting the PSMFC into the soil to activate, it started to produce electricity after 1 h and reached the power density of 7.3 mW/m2 after 48 h. The proposed PSMFC can potentially generate electricity for remote sensors or soil sensing systems.

Improved Simultaneous Decolorization and Power Generation in a Microbial Fuel Cell with the Sponge Anode Modified by Polyaniline and Chitosan

In recent years, microbial fuel cell (MFC) has been regarded as a promising technology for dye wastewater treatment. Compared with traditional anaerobic reactors, MFC has better decolorization effect while producing electricity simultaneously. In this paper, a double-chamber MFC with the sponge anode modified by polyaniline and chitosan-NCNTs was employed for simultaneous azo dye decolorization and bioelectricity generation. The influence of dye concentration, co-substrate concentration, and operating temperature on the performance of MFC with the modified anodes were studied. The results showed that a high decolorization efficiency (98.41%) and maximum power density (2816.67 mW m^-3) of MFC equipped with modified bioanodes were achieved due to the biocompatibility and bioelectrocatalysis of modified material. And the biomass on the modified anode's surface was increased by 1.47 times. Additionally, microbial community analysis revealed that the modification of polyaniline and chitosan-NCNTs improved the selective enrichment of specific communities and the main microorganism was the electroactive and decolorizing bacteria Enterobacter (62.84%). Therefore, the composite anode is capable of fully utilizing the synergistic role of various materials, leading to superior performance of dye decolorization in MFCs. This work provided a strategy for the research on the recovery of biomass energy and decolorization in wastewater treatment. Graphical Abstract.

Platinum Group Metal-Free Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction: Applications in Microbial Fuel Cells

Scientific and technological innovation is increasingly playing a role for promoting the transition towards a circular economy and sustainable development. Thanks to its dual function of harvesting energy from waste and cleaning up waste from organic pollutants, microbial fuel cells (MFCs) provide a revolutionary answer to the global environmental challenges. Yet, one key factor that limits the implementation of larger scale MFCs is the high cost and low durability of current electrode materials, owing to the use of platinum at the cathode side. To address this issue, the scientific community has devoted its research efforts for identifying innovative and low cost materials and components to assemble lab-scale MFC prototypes, fed with wastewaters of different nature. This review work summarizes the state-of the-art of developing platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) catalysts for applications at the cathode side of MFCs. We address how different catalyst families boost oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in neutral pH, as result of an interplay between surface chemistry and morphology on the efficiency of ORR active sites. We particularly review the properties, performance, and applicability of metal-free carbon-based materials, molecular catalysts based on metal macrocycles supported on carbon nanostructures, M-N-C catalysts activated via pyrolysis, metal oxide-based catalysts, and enzyme catalysts. We finally discuss recent progress on MFC cathode design, providing a guidance for improving cathode activity and stability under MFC operating conditions.
