Supramolecular chemistry of liquid-liquid extraction

Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE) is a venerable and widely used method for the separation of a targeted solute between two immiscible liquids. In recent years, this method has gained popularity in the supramolecular chemistry community due to the development of various types of synthetic receptors that effectively and selectively bind specific guests in an aqueous medium through different supramolecular interactions. This has eventually led to the development of state-of-the-art extraction technologies for the removal and purification of anions, cations, ion pairs, and small molecules from one liquid phase to another liquid phase, which is an industrially viable method. The focus of this perspective is to furnish a vivid picture of the current understanding of supramolecular interaction-based LLE chemistry. This will not only help to improve separation technology in the chemical, mining, nuclear waste treatment, and medicinal chemistry sectors but is also useful to address the purity issue of the extractable species, which is otherwise difficult. Thus, up-to-date knowledge on this subject will eventually provide opportunities to develop large-scale waste remediation processes and metallurgy applications that can address important real-life problems.

Squaramide-based receptors in anion supramolecular chemistry: insights into anion binding, sensing, transport and extraction

Over the last 15 years, squaramide-based receptors have attracted the attention of supramolecular chemists working in the field of anion recognition. Herein, we highlight examples of squaramide-based receptors that are able to bind, sense, extract and transport anions.

Anion-templated synthesis of a switchable fluorescent [2]catenane with sulfate sensing capability

Anion templation strategies have facilitated the synthesis of various catenane and rotaxane hosts capable of strong and selective binding of anions in competitive solvents. However, this approach has primarily relied on positively charged precursors, limiting the structural diversity and the range of potential applications of the anion-templated mechanically interlocked molecules. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of a rare electroneutral [2]catenane using a powerful, doubly charged sulfate template and a complementary diamidocarbazole-based hydrogen bonding precursor. Owing to the unique three-dimensional hydrogen bonding cavity and the embedded carbazole fluorophores, the resulting catenane receptor functions as a sensitive fluorescent turn-ON sensor for the highly hydrophilic sulfate, even in the presence of a large excess of water. Importantly, the [2]catenane exhibits enhanced binding affinity and selectivity for sulfate over its parent macrocycle and other acyclic diamidocarbazole-based receptors. We demonstrate also, for the first time, that the co-conformation of the catenane may be controlled by reversible acid/base induced protonation and deprotonation of the anionic template, SO42-. This approach pioneers a new strategy to induce molecular motion of interlocked components using switchable anionic templates.

Squaramide-Based Heteroditopic [2]Rotaxanes for Sodium Halide Ion-Pair Recognition

A series of squaramide-based heteroditopic [2]rotaxanes consisting of isophthalamide macrocycle and squaramide axle components are synthesized using an alkali metal cation template-directed stoppering methodology. This work highlights the unprecedented sodium cation template coordination of the Lewis basic squaramide carbonyls for interlocked structure synthesis. Extensive quantitative 1 H NMR spectroscopic anion and ion-pair recognition studies reveal the [2]rotaxane hosts are capable of cooperative sodium halide ion-pair mechanical bond axle-macrocycle component recognition, eliciting up to 20-fold enhancements in binding strengths for bromide and iodide, wherein the Lewis basic carbonyls and Lewis acidic NH hydrogen bond donors of the squaramide axle motif operate as cation and anion receptive sites simultaneously in an ambidentate fashion. Notably, varying the length and nature of the polyether cation binding unit of the macrocycle component dramatically influences the ion-pair binding affinities of the [2]rotaxanes, even overcoming direct contact NaCl ion-pair binding modes in polar organic solvents. Furthermore, the cooperative ion-pair binding properties of the squaramide-based heteroditopic [2]rotaxanes are exploited to successfully extract solid sodium halide salts into organic media.

pH- and temperature-responsive supramolecular assemblies with highly adjustable viscoelasticity: a multi-stimuli binary system

Stimuli-responsive materials are increasingly needed for the development of smart electronic, mechanical, and biological devices and systems relying on switchable, tunable, and adaptable properties. Herein, we report a novel pH- and temperature-responsive binary supramolecular assembly involving a long-chain hydroxyamino amide (HAA) and an inorganic hydrotrope, boric acid, with highly tunable viscous and viscoelastic properties. The system under investigation demonstrates a high degree of control over its viscosity, with the capacity to achieve over four orders of magnitude of control through the concomitant manipulation of pH and temperature. In addition, the transformation from non-Maxwellian to Maxwellian fluid behavior could also be induced by changing the pH and temperature. Switchable rheological properties were ascribed to the morphological transformation between spherical vesicles, aggregated/fused spherical vesicles, and bicontinuous gyroid structures revealed by cryo-TEM studies. The observed transitions are attributed to the modulation of the head group spacing between HAA molecules under different pH conditions. Specifically, acidic conditions induce electrostatic repulsion between the protonated amino head groups, leading to an increased spacing. Conversely, under basic conditions, the HAA head group spacing is reduced due to the intercalation of tetrahydroxyborate, facilitated by hydrogen bonding.

Anion-exchange facilitated selective extraction of sulfate and phosphate by overcoming the Hofmeister bias

Selective recognition and removal of sulfate and phosphates from aqueous media in the presence of highly competing anions is very demanding because of their biological and environmental implications. In this paper, we present the anion recognition approach for the selective and efficient extraction of sulfate by nitrophenyl-functionalized tris-urea receptors (L₁-L₂) from highly competitive aqueous media with an equivalent concentration of nitrate and other anions. Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide has been used for the first time as a phase transfer anionic extractant for sulfate-exchange from the aqueous phase to the organic phase (dichloromethane) containing a tris-urea receptor (L₁-L₃). The sulfate extraction efficacy of L₂ (≈84-90%) was observed to be higher than those of L₁ (≈76-82%) and L₃ (≈68-75%) in competitive extraction experiments. In contrast, an analogous nitrophenyl-functionalized tris-thiourea receptor (L₄) has been recognized for the selective and efficient extraction of phosphates from aqueous media in the presence of several competing anions including sulfate and nitrate, with ≈85-92% extraction efficiency. In this case, tetrabutylammonium acetate has been used as a phase transfer anionic extractant for phosphate exchange between the two immiscible phases. Due to the higher acidity of tris-thiourea -NH groups in comparison to the analogous tris-urea, tetrabutylammonium hydroxide could deprotonate a hydrogen bond donating -NH group of the thiourea receptor and phosphate extraction was observed to be inefficient in such a case. Several liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) experiments have been carried out to establish the selective removal of sulfate and phosphates by the tripodal receptors from competitive aqueous media having different combinations of two or more anions. The LLE products obtained from organic phases were characterized by NMR (¹H, ¹³C, ³¹P, and ¹⁹F) spectroscopy to affirm the oxoanion selectivity of the receptors and purity of the complexes. The tripodal receptors can easily be recycled for successive extraction cycles by simply washing the LLE products (oxoanion complexes) with a methanol-water (1 : 1, v/v) solvent system followed by filtration.

Interaction of Ions in Organic and Aqueous Media with an Ion-Pair Sensor Equipped with a BODIPY Reporter: An ON1-OFF-ON2-ON3 Fluorescent Assay

Here, we present a ditopic ion-pair sensor, B1, containing the BODIPY reporter unit in its structure, which is shown to be able-thanks to the presence of two heterogeneous binding domains-to interact with anions in an enhanced manner in the presence of cations. This enables it to interact with salts even in 99% aqueous solutions, making B1 a good candidate in terms of visual salt detection in the aquatic environment. Receptor B1's ability to extract and release salt was applied in the transport of potassium chloride through a bulk liquid membrane. Working with a concentration of B1 in the organic phase and with the presence of a specific salt in an aqueous solution, an inverted transport experiment was also demonstrated. By varying the type and the amount of the anions added to B1, we were able to develop diverse optical responses, including a unique four-step ON1-OFF-ON2-ON3 output.

Highly Selective Coextraction of H+/SO42- Using a Strapped Calix[4]pyrrole

We report on the synthesis of a cage-type calix[4]pyrrole (1) bearing an additional basic pyridinebisthiazolamine group on the strap. The receptor in its protonated form shows strong affinity and selectivity for sulfate over a wide range of inorganic anions. With receptor 1 as a liquid-liquid extractant, H⁺/SO₄^2- in the form of H₂SO₄ is almost quantitatively extracted from an aqueous solution containing HNO₃ at a high concentration to CH₂Cl₂ in a recyclable manner.

Selective Removal of Sulfate from Water by Precipitation with a Rigid Bis-amidinium Compound

A simple, readily prepared biphenyl bis-amidinium compound (1⋅Cl₂ ) is able to selectively precipitate sulfate from water. The precipitant is effective at concentrations as low as 1 mM and shows complete selectivity against monovalent anions, and high selectivity even against CO₃ ^2- and HPO₄ ^2- . It is highly effective (>90 % sulfate removed) in both seawater and highly acidic conditions relevant to mining waste-streams. X-ray crystallography reveals that 1⋅SO₄ forms a tightly packed, anhydrous, structure where each sulfate anion receives eight hydrogen bonds from amidinium N-H hydrogen bond donors.

The strength and selectivity of perfluorinated nano-hoops and buckybowls for anion binding and the nature of anion-π interactions

Perfluorinated cycloparaphenylenes (F-[n]CPP, n = 5-8), boron nitride nanohoop (F-[5]BNNH), and buckybowls (F-BBs) were proposed as anion receptors via anion-π interactions with halide anions (Cl^- , Br^- and I^- ), and remarkable binding strengths up to -294.8 kJ/mol were computationally verified. The energy decomposition approach based on the block-localized wavefunction method, which combines the computational efficiency of molecular orbital theory and the chemical intuition of ab initio valence bond theory, was applied to the above anion-π complexes, in order to elucidate the nature and selectivity of these interactions. The overall attraction is mainly governed by the frozen energy component, in which the electrostatic interaction is included. Remarkable binding strengths with F-[n]CPPs can be attributed to the accumulated anion-π interactions between the anion and each conjugated ring on the hoop, while for F-BBs, additional stability results from the curved frameworks, which distribute electron densities unequally on π-faces. Interestingly, the strongest host was proved to be the F-[5]BNNH, which exhibits the most significant anisotropy of the electrostatic potential surface due to the difference in the electronegativities of nitrogen and boron. The selectivity of each host for anions was explored and the importance of the often-overlooked Pauli exchange repulsion was illustrated. Chloride anion turns out to be the most favorable anion for all receptors, due to the smallest ionic radius and the weakest destabilizing Pauli exchange repulsion.

Recent Advancements in Ion-Pair Receptors

Over the past two decades, non-covalent chemistry has introduced various promising artificial receptors and revolutionized the host-guest chemistry. These versatile receptors have particularly been entertained in sensing and recognizing of diverse neutral molecules and/or ionic entities (e. g. anions, cations and ion-pair) of particular interest. Notably, supramolecular chemistry had given birth to a plethora of important molecules, explored in the chemical, biological, environmental, and pharmacological world to resolve the critical issues related to the human health while keeping environmental concerns in mind. Amongst the various types of supramolecular monotopic receptors (anions, cations, and neutral molecules), heteroditopic receptors (ion-pair receptors) consisting of distinct binding sites in one system for both cation and anion, have gained much interest from the scientific community in recent past because of their unique binding abilities. Interestingly, these promising artificial receptors have shown potential applications in sensing, recognition, transport and extraction processes besides their uses in salt/waste purification. Bearing the importance of these systems in mind, we intended to report the recent developments in ion-pair chemistry. Herein, we divided the whole document into three main sections; first one describes the introduction and history of the ion-pairs receptors. The second portion highlights the synthesis and applications of ion-pair receptors in sensing, recognition, molecular machines, photoswitching behaviour, extraction and transport properties, whereas the last part of this manuscript provides concluding remarks as well as future prospects of ion-pair receptors. We hope that this manuscript will be helpful to stimulating researchers around the globe to find out the hidden opportunities in this and related areas.

Separation of Sulfate Anion From Aqueous Solution Governed by Recognition Chemistry: A Minireview

The sulfate anion (SO₄^2–) is known as an end metabolite of cysteine and methionine, and its proper concentration is associated with the expression of key functions in the physiological system. Thus, maintaining sulfate concentration at a precise level is of great significance for biology, environments, and industrial productions. Fundamental research for sulfate anion chemistry can help understand sulfate-associated physiological processes and related applications, for example, remediation. In this minireview, we summarized recent research progresses in sulfate recognition and separation using crystallization and liquid–liquid extraction. We focused on the studies wherein molecular recognition is the key element and is considered the driving force for selective sulfate separations from aqueous solution.

Bis[squaramido]ferrocenes as electrochemical sulfate receptors

The bis[squaramido]ferrocene scaffold is introduced and shown to selectively bind and electrochemically report sulfate in competitive water/DMSO mixtures.

Recognition-guided sulfate extraction and transport using tripodal hexaurea receptors

Hexaurea-based receptors enable highly efficient sulfate extraction (over 97%) via liquid–liquid extraction, and a controllable release of the bound sulfate is achieved by acidifying the solution, as demonstrated in the U-tube experiment.

Photoresponsive macrocycles for selective binding and release of sulfate

A series of new photoresponsive macrocyclic anion receptors were synthesized via integration of an azobenzene unit and multiple anion binding sites. They exhibited highly selective binding to dianionic sulfate over other tested anions and the reversible release of sulfate could be triggered by visible light as inferred from mass spectroscopy, crystallographical analysis, NMR spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations.

Fluorescence Recognition of Anions Using a Heteroditopic Receptor: Homogenous and Two-Phase Sensing

In contrast to monotopic receptor 3, the anthracene functionalized squaramide dual-host receptor 1 is capable of selectively extracting sulfate salts, as was evidenced unambiguously by DOSY, mass spectrometry, fluorescent and ion chromatography measurements. The receptors were investigated in terms of anion and ion pair binding using the UV-vis and 1H NMR titrations method in acetonitrile. The reference anion receptor 3, lacking a crown ether unit, was found to lose the enhancement in anion binding induced by the presence of cations. Besides the ability to bind anions in an enhanced manner exhibited by ion pair receptors 2 and 4, changing the 1-aminoanthracene substituent resulted in their exhibiting a lower anion affinity than receptor 1. By using receptor 1 and adjusting the water content in organic phase it was possible to selectively detect sulfates both by "turn-off" and "turn-on" fluorescence, and to do so homogenously and under interfacial conditions. Such properties of receptor 1 have allowed the development of a new type of sensor capable of recognizing and extracting potassium sulfate from the aqueous medium across a phase boundary, resulting in an appropriate fluorescent response in the organic solution.

Synthesis of Novel Crown Ether-Squaramides and Their Application as Phase-Transfer Catalysts

This work presents the synthesis of six new phase-transfer organocatalysts in which the squaramide unit is directly linked to the nitrogen atom of an aza-crown ether. Four chiral skeletons, namely hydroquinine, quinine, cinchonine (cinchonas), and α-d-glucopyranoside were responsible for the asymmetric construction of an all-carbon quaternary stereogenic center in α-alkylation and Michael addition reactions of malonic esters. We investigated the effects of these different chiral units and that of crown ethers with different sizes on catalytic activity and enantioselectivity. During extensive parameter investigations, both conventional and emerging green solvents were screened, providing valuable α,α-disubstituted malonic ester derivatives with excellent yields (up to 98%).

Utilizing an Amino Acid Scaffold to Construct Heteroditopic Receptors Capable of Interacting with Salts under Interfacial Conditions

A 4-nitro-L-phenylalanine scaffold was used to construct effective ion pair receptors capable of binding anions in an enhanced manner with the assistance of alkali metal cations. A benzocrown ether was linked to a receptor platform via the amide function so as to support the squaramide function in anion binding and to allow all three NHs to act simultaneously. The binding properties of the receptors were determined using UV-vis, ¹H NMR, 2D NMR, and DOSY spectroscopy in MeCN and in the solid state by X-ray measurements. Ion pair receptor 2 was found to interact with the most strongly with salts, and the removal of its key structural elements was shown to hinder the receptor action. The amide proton was recognized to switch from having involvement in an intramolecular hydrogen bond to interacting with anions upon complexation. Apart from carboxylates, which promote deprotonation, and other monovalent salts creating 1:1 complexes with the receptor, more complex equilibria were established upon the complexation of 2 with sulfates. Receptor 2 was shown to be capable of the extraction of ion pairs from the aqueous to organic phase and of the cation-enhanced transport chloride and sulfate anions across a bulk chloroform membrane. These features may open the door for its use in regulating ion concertation under interfacial conditions and acting as a potential drug to treat channelopathies.

Tripodal, Squaramide-Based Ion Pair Receptor for Effective Extraction of Sulfate Salt

Combining three features-the high affinity of squaramides toward anions, cooperation in ion pair binding and preorganization of the binding domains in the tripodal platform-led to the effective receptor 2. The lack of at least one of these key elements in the structures of reference receptors 3 and 4 caused a lower affinity towards ion pairs. Receptor 2 was found to form an intramolecular network in wet chloroform, which changed into inorganic-organic associates after contact with ions and allowed salts to be extracted from an aqueous to an organic phase. The disparity in the binding mode of 2 with sulfates and with other monovalent anions led to the selective extraction of extremely hydrated sulfate anions in the presence of more lipophilic salts, thus overcoming the Hofmeister series.

Macrocyclic squaramides as ion pair receptors and fluorescent sensors selective towards sulfates

Through the high dilution technique, we obtained macrocyclic ion pair receptors R1 and R2, an anion receptor R3, and a fluorescent sensor R4 using a combination of particular members of simple libraries consisting of synthesized diamines and methyl squarates, respectively. The receptors were investigated in terms of anion and ion pair binding using the ¹H NMR titration method in DMSO-d₆. We found that the major contribution to the anion binding comes from the interaction with the squaramide protons rather than with the amide functions of the receptors. The receptors demonstrated the highest affinity towards benzoates and sulfates over the anions tested, and in the case of sulfate binding more complex equilibria in solution were observed. Unlike the anion receptor R3, the ion pair receptor R1 was found to recognize anions in an enhanced manner with the assistance of sodium or potassium cations. Tethering of a simple fluorophore in close proximity to the amide function of receptor R4 resulted in an optical ion pair sensor selective towards sulfates. DFT calculations carried out for the 1 : 1 complexes of R3 with the anions helped clarify this selectivity, showing more effective participation of tetrahedral sulfate anions in binding with the amide function than in the case of benzoates or chlorides.

Unprotected Galactosamine as a Dynamic Key for a Cyclochiral Lock

The discrimination of d-galactosamine (G), representative of the amino-sugar class of compounds, has been probed through nano-ESI-FT-ICR mass spectrometry by isolating the relevant [C·H·G]+ proton-bound complexes with the enantiomers of the cyclochiral resorcin[4]arene C and allowing them to react toward three primary amines (B = EtNH2, iPrNH2, and (R)- and (S)-sBuNH2). The system under investigation presents several features that help to unveil the behavior of unprotected G in such a supramolecular architecture: (i) the hydrophobic derivatization of the C convex side forces the polar guest G to be coordinated by the cyclochiral concave region; (ii) protonated d-galactosamine exists as an anomeric mixture, dynamically interconverting throughout the experimental time-window; and (iii) different basicities of B allow the experiment to subtly tune the reactivity of the [C·H·G]+ complexes. Three [C·H·G]+ aggregate-types were found to exist, differing in both their origin and reactivity. The most reactive adducts ([C·H·G]ESI+), generated in the electrospray environment, undergo a G-to-B ligand exchange in competition with a partial isomerization to the unreactive [C·H·G]GAS+-type complexes. Finally, the poorly reactive [C·H·G]SOL+ aggregates are formed in solution over an hours-long time scale. A cyclochirality effect on the reactivity was found to depend on the considered [C·H·G]+ aggregate-type.

Switching-On Fluorescence by Copper (II) and Basic Anions: A Case Study with a Pyrene-Functionalized Squaramide

The new symmetric acyclic N,N’-bis(1-pyrenyl) squaramide (H₂L) functionalized with the pyrene moiety as a fluorogenic fragment has been designed and its ability to selectively detect specific anions and metals investigated. H₂L selectively binds Cl⁻ both in solution (DMSO 0.5% H₂O and MeCN) and in the solid state, and allows to selectively detect Cu²⁺ in MeCN with the formation of a 2:1 metal-receptor complex, with a green intense emission appreciable by naked eye under the UV lamp. The H₂L copper complex preserves its emission properties in the presence of Cl⁻. The addition of basic anions (OH⁻, CN⁻, and F⁻) up to 10 equivalents caused the deprotonation of the squaramide NHs and a dramatic change of the emission properties of the H₂L copper complex.

Heteroditopic receptor flexibility – an important design principle for effective ion pair extractants based on carboxylate studies

Potassium carboxylate salt binding and extraction experiments of a heteroditopic receptor series reveal that conformational freedom is an important factor affecting salt extraction efficiency.

Advances in applied supramolecular technologies

Supramolecular chemistry has successfully built a foundation of fundamental understanding. However, with this now achieved, we show how this area of chemistry is moving out of the laboratory towards successful commercialisation.

Highly Efficient, Tripodal Ion-Pair Receptors for Switching Selectivity between Acetates and Sulfates Using Solid-Liquid and Liquid-Liquid Extractions

A tripodal, squaramide-based ion-pair receptor 1 was synthesized in a modular fashion, and ¹H NMR and UV-vis studies revealed its ability to interact more efficiently with anions with the assistance of cations. The reference tripodal anion receptor 2, lacking a crown ether unit, was found to lose the enhancement in anion binding induced by presence of cations. Besides the ability to bind anions in enhanced manner by the “single armed” ion-pair receptor 3, the lack of multiple and prearranged binding sites resulted in its much lower affinity towards anions than in the case of tripodal receptors. Unlike with receptors 2 or 3, the high affinity of 1 towards salts opens up the possibility of extracting extremely hydrophilic sulfate anions from aqueous to organic phase. The disparity in receptor 1 binding modes towards monovalent anions and divalent sulfates assures its selectivity towards sulfates over other lipophilic salts upon liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) and enables the Hofmeister bias to be overcome. By changing the extraction conditions from LLE to SLE (solid–liquid extraction), a switch of selectivity from sulfates to acetates was achieved. X-ray measurements support the ability of anion binding by cooperation of the arms of receptor 1 together with simultaneous binding of cations.

Sensing and Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Dicarboxylates Using Dicopper Cryptates

We report the investigation of dicopper(II) bistren cryptate, containing naphthyl spacers between the tren subunits, as a receptor for polycarboxylates in neutral aqueous solution. An indicator displacement assay for dicarboxylates was also developed by mixing the azacryptate with the fluorescent indicator 5-carboxyfluorescein in a 50:1 molar ratio. Fluorimetric studies showed a significant restoration of fluorophore emission upon addition of fumarate anions followed by succinate and isophthalate. The introduction of hexyl chains on the naphthalene groups created a novel hydrophobic cage; the corresponding dicopper complex was investigated as an extractant for dicarboxylates from neutral water into dichloromethane. The liquid-liquid extraction of succinate-as a model anion-was successfully achieved by exploiting the high affinity of this anionic guest for the azacryptate cavity. Extraction was monitored through the changes in the UV-visible spectrum of the dicopper complex in dichloromethane and by measuring the residual concentration of succinate in the aqueous phase by HPLC-UV. The successful extraction was also confirmed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Considering the relevance of polycarboxylates in biochemistry and in the environmental field, e.g., as waste products of industrial processes, our results open new perspectives for research in all contexts where recognition, sensing, or extraction of polycarboxylates is required.

Selective Phase Transfer Reagents (OxP-crowns) for Chromogenic Detection of Nitrates Especially Ammonium Nitrate

Nitrogen and phosphorus-containing ions such as ammonium, nitrates and phosphates are anthropogenic pollutants while ammonium nitrate may be diverted for nefarious purposes in improvised explosive devices. Crown ether-oxoporphyrinogen conjugates (OxP-crowns) are used to selectively detect nitrates, especially their ion pairs with K⁺ and NH₄ ⁺ , based on ion pair complexation of OxP-crowns under phase transfer conditions. The presence of phosphate and carbonate lead to deprotonation of OxP-crowns. OxP-1N18C6 is capable of extracting ion pairs with nitrate from aqueous phase leading to a selective chromogenic response. Deprotonation of the OxP moiety leads to [OxP^- ]-1N18C6[K⁺ ] and is promoted by crown ether selective cation binding coupled with hydration of basic oxoanions, which are constrained to remain in the aqueous phase. This work illustrates the utility of molecular design to exploit partitioning and ion hydration effects establishing the selectivity of the chromogenic response.

Analysis of Ion Pairing in Solid State and Solution in p-Cymene Ruthenium Complexes

The importance of ion pairing in different fields of chemistry is widely recognized. In this work, we have synthesized a set of cationic p-cymene ruthenium complexes of general formula [(p-cym)Ru(L')(κ²-O^N-L)]X (p-cym = p-cymene; L' = N-methylimidazole (MeIm), N-ethylpiperidylimidazole (EpipIm), 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA); L = 2-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)phenolato (L1), 2-(1,3-benzothiazol-2-yl)phenolato (L2); X = Cl^-, BF₄^-, OTf^-, BPh₄^-). X-ray diffraction studies on selected complexes revealed relatively strong anion-cation interactions in the solid state mainly based on N-H···X (X = Cl, F, O) and C-H···π interactions, also observed in the DFT-modeled complexes in the gas phase. Moreover, NMR studies showed that they exist as intimate ion pairs in solution and, remarkably, as head-to-tail quadruples in the particular case of the cation [(p-cym)Ru(MeIm)(κ²- O^N-L1)]⁺ ([1]⁺) with Cl^- and BPh₄^- as counteranions. Furthermore, a value of ΔG = -2.9 kcal mol^-1 at 299 K has been estimated for the equilibrium {[1]BPh₄···[1]BPh₄} ⇆ 2{[1]⁺···BPh₄^-} in concentrated CDCl₃ solutions. In addition, preliminary studies concerning the cytotoxic properties against HeLa cell lines of the derivatives suggested a positive effect derived from the presence of the lipophilic BPh₄^- anion and also from the NH group of the benzimidazolyl fragment.

Cooperative Transport and Selective Extraction of Sulfates by a Squaramide-Based Ion Pair Receptor: A Case of Adaptable Selectivity

The use of a squaramide-based ion pair receptor offers a solution to the very challenging problem of extraction and transport of extremely hydrated sulfate salt. Herein we demonstrate for the first time that a neutral receptor is able not only to selectively extract but also to transport sulfates in the form of an alkali metal salt across membranes and to do so in a cooperative manner while overcoming the Hofmeister bias. This was made possible by an enhancement in anion binding promoted by cation assistance and by diversifying the stoichiometry of receptor complexes with sulfates and other ions. The existence of a peculiar 4:1 complex of receptor 2 with sulfates in solution was confirmed by UV-vis and 1H NMR titration experiments, DOSY and DLS measurements, and supported by solid-state X-ray measurements. By varying the separation technique and experimental conditions, it was possible to switch the depletion of the aqueous layer into extremely hydrophilic or less lipophilic salts, thus obtaining the desired selectivity.

Synthesis of dynamic imine macrocyclic supramolecular polymers via synchronized self-assembly based on dynamic covalent bonds and noncovalent interactions

The preparation of dynamic imine macrocycles and supramolecular polymers is combined into a single step to form supramolecular polymers (SPs). 1,4-Diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) derived quaternary ammonium salts induce aldehyde and amine building blocks to covalently form imine macrocycles. Multiple noncovalent interactions between hosts (i.e., imine macrocycle) and guests (i.e., DABCO) act as driving forces. Thus, for the first time, dynamic imine macrocyclic supramolecular polymers (DIMPs) have been achieved through the synchronized self-assembly of dynamic covalent bond formed imine macrocycles and noncovalent interactions of hosts-guests.

Unraveling the Origin of Differentiable 'Turn-On' Fluorescence Sensing of Zn2+ and Cd2+ Ions with Squaramides

A squaramide ring conjugated with Schiff-bases decorated with hydroxy and methoxy functional groups differentially senses zinc and cadmium ions, which turn on the fluorescence. The feebly emitting free ligands light up in the presence of zinc and cadmium acetates, with the acetate ion playing a pivotal role as a conjugate anion. The selective and differentiable emission responses for zinc and cadmium ions make these ligands efficient multi-analyte sensing agents. Furthermore, these ligands could be used to differentially sense zinc and cadmium ions even in aqueous environments. The NMR investigations reveal marginal differences in the binding of zinc and cadmium ions to the ligands, whereas density functional theory calculations suggest the different extent of ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) contributes to the differential behavior. Finally, comparison of the excited-state dynamics of free ligand and the metal complexes reveal the appearance of longer lifetime (about 500-700 ps) component with complexation, due to rigidified molecular skeleton, thereby impeding the non-radiative processes.
