Modulated assembly and structural diversity of heterometallic Sn-Ti oxo clusters from inorganic tin precursors

Through modulating the multidentate ligands, solvent environments, and inorganic tin precursors during the synthesis processes, we have successfully prepared a series of unprecedented heterometallic Sn-Ti oxo clusters with structural diversity and different physiochemical attributes. Initially, two Sn6Ti10 clusters were synthesized using trimethylolpropane as a structure-oriented ligand and SnCl4·5H2O as a tin source. Then, when a larger pentadentate ligand di(trimethylolpropane) was used instead of trimethylolpropane and aprotic acetonitrile solvent was introduced into the reaction system, four low-nuclearity Sn-Ti oxo clusters were discovered, including two Sn1Ti1, one Sn2Ti2 and one Sn2Ti6. Finally, two mixed-valence state clusters, SnII4SnIV2TiIV14 and SnII4SnIV4TiIV20, were obtained by transforming the tin precursor from SnCl4·5H2O to SnCl2·2H2O and adjusting the acetonitrile solution with trace acetic acid/formic acid. Sn8Ti20 is the highest-nuclearity heterometallic Sn-Ti oxo cluster to date. Moreover, comparative electrocatalytic CO2 reduction experiments were carried out, and it was concluded that the Sn8Ti20-decorated electrode showed the most satisfactory performance due to the influence of mixed-valence states of the Sn atoms and the charging effects provided by 20 Ti4+ ions. This study presents important guiding significance for the design, synthesis and application optimization of functional heterometallic nanoclusters.

A Lanthanide-Incorporated Phospho(III)tungstate Aggregate Constructed from [HPIIIW8O31]10- and [W11O39]12- Building Blocks and Its Nanocomposite with CdS for Ultrasensitive Photoelectrochemical Detection of Oxytetracycline

A novel tartronic acid decorated hexa-CeIII-incorporated phospho(III)tungstate aggregate (C4H12NO)6Na18H2[(HPW8O31)2[W11O39]2(H2TAD)4(H2O)4W4Ce6H2P2O14]·84H2O (1, H3TAD = tartronic acid) was synthesized by a one-step assembly strategy. Its main skeleton is constructed from two [W11O39]12- fragments, two [HPIIIW8O31]10- segments and one H2TAD--ornamented dodecanuclear heterometallic [W4Ce6H2PIII2O14(H2TAD)4(H2O)4]18+ cluster. In the structure, the [HPIIIO3]2- groups not only work as the heteroatom template to induce the formation of lacunary [HPIIIW8O31]10- segments but also function as the connector to bridge Ce3+ cations. With the help of a reaction strategy of combining ultrasonication treatment with the continuous ion layer adsorption method, the 1/CdS composite was constructed and exhibits prominent photoelectrochemical activity. The 1/CdS composite was used as a photoelectrochemical sensor for oxytetracycline detection at 0 V (vs Ag/AgCl), which displays excellent properties with quick response and low limit of detection (0.042 nM). This work can provide some helpful references in the construction of novel PIII-induced polyoxometalates consisting of different building blocks and can extend the applications of polyoxometalate-based nanocomposites into photoelectrochemical detection for antibiotics as well as biomolecules.

Dimers and 2D Networks of Adamantane-Related Ternary Organosilicon Coinage Metal Sulfide Clusters

Adamantane-type organotin sulfide clusters were recently shown to react with coinage metal phosphine complexes under replacement of an organic substituent by a metal-phosphine unit. An extension of such studies involving the silicon-based congener [(PhSi)4S6] (A) revealed that the cluster core will be partly disassembled and a {PhSi} moiety is replaced by a coinage metal phosphine complex to form [(Et3PAg)3(PhSi)3S6] (B) and [Na2(thf)2.33][(Me3PCu)(PhSi)3S6] (C). Herein, we present an extension of this work upon variation of the reactants and reaction conditions. Besides the isolation of crystalline precursor complexes [CuCl(PMe2Ph)3] (1) and [AgCl(PMe2Ph)2]2 (2), the study addresses reactions of A with AgCl and a phosphine ligand in CH2Cl2, upon which A is completely disassembled to form [(Ph3P)3Ag(μ-S)SiCl2Ph] (3). In another case a CH2 group, most likely stemming from CH2Cl2, was attached to the ligand, thus generating [{PhCl(S)SiSCH2P(Ph2)CH2CH2}2] (4). Upon using CuCl and 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (dppb) we isolated the phosphine-bridged analog of B, [{(dppbCu2)CuP(Ph2)(CH2CH2)(PhSi)3S6}2] (5). In order to receive the yet elusive silver homolog of C, we used PMe2Ph as a bulkier ligand. This way we generated a 2D coordination polymer of the desired composition, [Na2(thf)1.5][(Me2PhPAg)(PhSi)3S6] (6). UV-visible spectra of 6 indicated a bandgap of 3.89 eV, thus blue-shifted in regards to B and C.

{SeO2(OH)} Bridging Lanthanide-Containing Antimono-Seleno-Tungstates

A series of new trigonal pyramidal {SeO2(OH)} bridging lanthanide-containing antimono-seleno-tungstates [H2N(CH3)2]8Na8Cs4H9[Ln2SeW4O11(OH)(H2O)4(SbW9O33)(SeW9O33)(Se1/2Sb1/2W9O33)]2·32H2O [Ln = Tb (1), Dy (2), Ho (3), Er (4)] have been prepared by the synthetic strategy of simultaneously using the antimonotungstate precursor and simple material in an acidic aqueous solution and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis. Their molecular structures contain an unprecedented hexameric polyoxoanion [Ln2SeW4O11(OH)(H2O)4(SbW9O33)(SeW9O33)(Se1/2Sb1/2W9O33)]229- constituted by two equivalent trimeric subunits Ln2W4O9(H2O)4(SbW9O33)(SeW9O33)(Se1/2Sb1/2W9O33) bridged via two μ2-{SeO2(OH)} linkers. Furthermore, the catalytic oxidation of various aromatic sulfides and sulfur mustard simulant 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) by compound 3 as the heterogeneous catalyst has been investigated, exhibiting high conversion and selectivity as well as good stability and recyclability.

Selective and benign alkylation of sulfido-oxo stannate clusters with propyl, pentyl, or hexyl substituents

Chalcogenido metalate compounds that are based on tetrahedral clusters have been extensively studied in recent years due to their rich structural chemistry and uncommon chemical and physical properties. Recently it was shown that partial butylation of the inorganic cluster core by ionothermal reactions allowed access to tetrahedral sulfido-oxo stannate clusters with reasonable solubility in conventional solvents at the retainment of their opto-electronic features. We have expanded this mild alkylation approach, and herein report success in receiving the first sulfido-oxo stannate clusters that are selectively propylated, pentylated, and hexylated. This was achieved in a unique way by preparing symmetrically 1,3-substituted imidazolium bromides in preparative scale and using them as both the reaction medium and alkylatoin reagent. We discuss the effect of the organic groups attached to the cluster and present in the counterions of the products on the compounds' structural and opto-electronic properties.

Ion-Selective Assembly of Supertetrahedral Selenido Germanate Clusters for Alkali Metal Ion Capture and Separation

Supertetrahedral chalcogenido (semi)metalate cluster-based frameworks possess high selectivity for alkali metal cations, matching the specific charge density of their inner surfaces, which enables their use as ion-exchange materials. Aggregates of the supertetrahedral chalcogenido metalate cluster offer even new perspectives for metal ion capture and separation. Herein, we report on ionothermal preparation of two corresponding model compounds, (C₂C₁Im)₇[Cs@Ge^II₄(Ge^IV₄Se₁₀)₄] (1) and (C₂C₁Im)₁₀[Na₅(CN)₆@Cu₆(Ge₄Se₁₀)₄(Cu)] (2). Their formation is reliant on one specific cation type each, Cs⁺ for 1 and Na⁺ for 2, thus providing promising separation potential during crystallization. Compound 1 is based on the largest discrete binary selenido germanate cluster reported to date and the first mixed-valent chalcogenido germanate(II/IV) supertetrahedron. Moreover, it adds to the few examples of chalcogenides capable of capturing Cs⁺ ions. Its high selectivity for Cs⁺ compared to that of Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, and Rb⁺ was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Quantum chemical studies indicate that smaller ions, K⁺ and Rb⁺, could also be embedded in an isolated cluster assembly, but as the cluster aggregate slightly distorts for crystallization, the selectivity for Cs⁺ becomes exclusive in the salt. The anionic substructure of compound 2 is based on a two-dimensional network of supramolecular assemblies and exhibits an exclusive preference for Na⁺. This work thus provides the first comprehensive insight into the selective incorporation of specific alkali metal ions into supramolecular aggregates of supertetrahedral chalcogenide clusters, as a promising basis for new ion trapping techniques─especially for heavy alkali metal ions that pose environmental challenges.

Toxicity and anti-tumour activity of organotin (IV) compounds

Organotins are widely described as anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and antimicrobial agents. In addition to their use in biomedical fields, organotins are also used in agricultural and industrial applications. These materials are more toxic than inorganic cans, which are poorly absorbed and are excreted on the surface of the can, and cause toxicity to a variety of organisms and damage the environment.This review focuses on organotin’s toxicity and uses in biomedical fields.

Re-sensitization of mcr carrying multidrug resistant bacteria to colistin by silver

Superbugs carrying a mobile colistin resistance gene (mcr) are jeopardizing the clinical efficacy of the last-line antibiotic colistin. The development of MCR inhibitors is urgently required to cope with antibiotic-resistance emergencies. Here, we show that silver (Ag⁺) fully restores the susceptibility of mcr-1–carrying superbugs against colistin both in vitro and in vivo. We found an unprecedented tetra-silver center in the active-site pocket of MCR-1 through the substitution of the essential Zn²⁺ ions in the intact enzyme, leading to the prevention of substrate binding (i.e. the dysfunction of MCR-1 in transferring phosphorylethanolamine to lipid A). Importantly, the ability of Ag⁺ to suppress resistance evolution extends the lifespan of currently used antibiotics, providing a strategy to treat infections by mcr-positive bacteria.

Colistin is considered the last-line antimicrobial for the treatment of multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacterial infections. The emergence and spread of superbugs carrying the mobile colistin resistance gene (mcr) have become the most serious and urgent threat to healthcare. Here, we discover that silver (Ag⁺), including silver nanoparticles, could restore colistin efficacy against mcr-positive bacteria. We show that Ag⁺ inhibits the activity of the MCR-1 enzyme via substitution of Zn²⁺ in the active site. Unexpectedly, a tetra-silver center was found in the active-site pocket of MCR-1 as revealed by the X-ray structure of the Ag-bound MCR-1, resulting in the prevention of substrate binding. Moreover, Ag⁺ effectively slows down the development of higher-level resistance and reduces mutation frequency. Importantly, the combined use of Ag⁺ at a low concentration with colistin could relieve dermonecrotic lesions and reduce the bacterial load of mice infected with mcr-1–carrying pathogens. This study depicts a mechanism of Ag⁺ inhibition of MCR enzymes and demonstrates the potentials of Ag⁺ as broad-spectrum inhibitors for the treatment of mcr-positive bacterial infection in combination with colistin.

Electronic structure and bonding in endohedral Zintl clusters

Endohedral Zintl clusters-multi-metallic anionic molecules in which a d-block or f-block metal atom is enclosed by p-block (semi)metal atoms-are very topical in contemporary inorganic chemistry. Not only do they provide insight into the embryonic states of intermetallic compounds and show promise in catalytic applications, they also shed light on the nature of chemical bonding between metal atoms. Over the past two decades, a plethora of endohedral Zintl clusters have been synthesized, revealing a fascinating diversity of molecular architectures. Many different perspectives on the bonding in them have emerged in the literature, sometimes complementary and sometimes conflicting, and there has been no concerted effort to classify the entire family based on a small number of unifying principles. A closer look, however, reveals distinct patterns in structure and bonding that reflect the extent to which valence electrons are shared between the endohedral atom and the cluster shell. We show that there is a much more uniform relationship between the total valence electron count and the structure and bonding patterns of these clusters than previously anticipated. All of the p-block (semi)metal shells can be placed on a ladder of total valence electron count that ranges between 4n+2 (closo deltahedra), 5n (closed, three-bonded polyhedra) and 6n (crown-like structures). Although some structural isomerism can occur for a given electron count, the presence of a central metal cation imposes a preference for rather regular and approximately spherical structures which maximise electrostatic interactions between the metal and the shell. In cases where the endohedral metal has relatively accessible valence electrons (from the d or f shells), it can also contribute its valence electrons to the total electron count of the cluster shell, raising the effective electron count and often altering the structural preferences. The electronic situation in any given cluster is considered from different perspectives, some more physical and some more chemical, in a way that highlights the important point that, in the end, they explain the same situation. This article provides a unifying perspective of bonding that captures the structural diversity across this diverse family of multimetallic clusters.

Higher stability of metalloid tin clusters obtained via the cation-anion interaction

The reaction of a metastable SnCl solution with KR (R = Si(SiMe₃)₂(SitBuMe₂) = Hyp^tBuMe₂ or Si(SiMe₃)₂(SiEt₃) = Hyp^Et₃) gives the metalloid tin cluster [Sn₁₀R₄]^2- in partly good yields. The tin clusters are in the solid state as well in solution coordinated by a potassium cation, leading first of all to a more static compound and novel coordination polymers in the solid state. Additionally, the coordination of the potassium cation strongly increases the stability of the cluster in solution. This higher stability is thereby an important prerequisite for future investigation of this open shell metalloid tin cluster.

Tetrahedral [Sb(AuMe)4 ]3- Occurring in Multimetallic Cluster Syntheses: About the Structure-Directing Role of Methyl Groups

The anion of [K(crypt-222)]3 [Sb(AuMe)4 ]⋅py (1; crypt-222=4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosane; py=pyridine) represents a rare example of a homoleptic heavy p-block metal atom being surrounded by four free-standing transition metal complex fragments, and the third example for a corresponding Sb compound. In contrast to all reported complexes of this type, the transition metal atoms possess twofold coordination only, hence the complex as a whole does not exhibit significant steric shielding or further linkage of the metal atoms. This is reflected in a high flexibility, as confirmed by slight deviations from a tetrahedral coordination of the Sb atom in the crystal and soft vibrational modes. An alternative pyramidal conformer, observed for a related arsenic compound with terminal phosphine ligands, is apparently disfavored owing to electron correlation effects. The compound is formed in a reaction that in another solvent or at other reactant concentrations yields salts of ternary cluster anions. By a combined experimental and theoretical study of different reaction conditions and previously unidentified side-products, we provide insight into multimetallic cluster synthesis reactions.

Structural Chemistry of Giant Metal Based Supramolecules

The review presents a bird-eye view on the state of research in the field of giant nonbiological discrete metal complexes and ions of nanometer size, which are structurally characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, using the crystal structure as a common key feature. The discussion is focused on the main structural features of the metal clusters, the clusters containing compact metal oxide/hydroxide/chalcogenide core, ligand-based metal-organic cages, and supramolecules as well as on the aspects related to the packing of the molecules or ions in the crystal and the methodological aspects of the single-crystal neutron and X-ray diffraction of these compounds.

Selective replacement of organosilicon units in the cluster [(PhSi)4S6] with coinage metal complex fragments

Adamantane-type organo-group 14 chalcogenide clusters were shown to possess extreme non-linear optical properties. Reactivity studies of corresponding organosilicon sulfide clusters towards copper and silver complexes indicate a replacement of exactly one of the organosilicon groups with a metal complex fragment to form [(Et₃PAg)₃(PhSi)₃S₆] (1) and [Na₂(thf)_2.33][(Me₃PCu)(PhSi)₃S₆] (2)-in striking contrast to reactions of organotin chalcogenide clusters, which are more significantly and less systematically re-organized. The silicon compounds are thus more suited for controlled modifications of their geometric and electronic structures.

Tin Metal Cluster Compounds as New Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Materials by Computational Study

It is quite appealing but challenging to predict and synthesize new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with exceptional performance. Herein, the different Sn₄ cluster core structures and third-order NLO properties are studied through electronic structure, excited hole-electron, bonding character, and aromaticity analysis. As a result, Sn₄ clusters with ring core structure (Sn₄-R) not only have the smallest E_gap, the largest UV-vis response intensity, but also the strongest third-order NLO response in our work. As proved by natural bond orbitals' (NBO) analysis, electron localization function (ELF), and adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP), the Sn₄⁴⁺ has two in-plane four center-two electron (4c-2e) Sn-Sn σ-bonds, resulting in a good delocalization. For the first time, delocalization of metal cluster cores in tin clusters that is beneficial to the third-order NLO response is proposed, which provides a new guidance to design and prepare third-order NLO materials.

Highly Soluble Supertetrahedra upon Selective Partial Butylation of Chalcogenido Metalate Clusters in Ionic Liquids

Supertetrahedral clusters have been reported in two generally different types so far: one type possessing an organic ligand shell, no or low charges, and high solubility, while the other cluster type is ligand-free with usually high charges and low or no solubility in common solvents. The latter is a tremendous disadvantage regarding further use of the clusters in solution. However, as organic substituents usually broaden the HOMO-LUMO gaps, which cannot be overcompensated by the (limited) cluster sizes, a full organic shielding comes along with drawbacks regarding opto-electronic properties. We therefore sought to find a way of generating soluble clusters with a minimum number of organic substituents. Here, we present the synthesis and full characterization of two salts of [Sn10 O4 S16 (SBu)4 ]4- that are high soluble in CH2 Cl2 or CH3 CN, which includes first NMR and mass spectra obtained from solutions of such salts with mostly inorganic supertetrahedral clusters. The optical absorption properties of this new class of compounds indicates nearly unaffected band gaps. The synthetic approach and the spectroscopic findings were rationalized and explained by means of high-level quantum chemical studies.

Mixed Solvothermal Synthesis of Tn Cluster-Based Indium and Gallium Sulfides Using Versatile Ammonia or Amine Structure-Directing Agents

Metal chalcogenide supertetrahedral Tn clusters are of current interest for their unique compositions and structures, which rely highly on the structure-directing agents. Herein, we report four novel Tn cluster-based indium and gallium sulfides, namely, [NH(CH₃)₃]₄In₄S₁₀H₄ (1), (NH₃)₄Ga₄S₆ (2), [NH₃CH₂CH₃]₅(NH₂CH₂CH₃)₂Ga₁₁S₁₉ (3), and [NH₃CH₂CH₂OH]₆Ga₁₀S₁₈·2NH₂CH₂CH₂OH (4). All four compounds were solvothermally synthesized in mixed amine-ethanol solutions or deep eutectic solvent (DES), where ammonia/amine molecules play significant structure-directing roles in the speciation and crystal growth. (1) Being protonated, the trimethylamine and ethanolamine molecules surround the T2-[In₄S₁₀H₄]^4- clusters (for 1) and [Ga₁₀S₁₈]_n^6n- open framework (for 4), respectively, compensating for the negative charge of the inorganic moieties. (2) With the lone pair of electrons, the ammonia molecules in 2 coordinate directly to corner Ga³⁺ ions of the {Ga₄S₆} cage to give a neutral T2-(NH₃)₄Ga₄S₆ cluster. (3) For compound 3, part of the ethylamine molecules act as terminating ligands for the T1 and T3 units in the [Ga₁₁S₁₉(NH₂CH₂CH₃)₂]_n^5n- layer, while the rest act as interlamellar countercations upon protonation. Theoretical studies reveal the contributions of N, C, and H to the density of states (DOS) for 2 and 3 because of their hybrid structures that combine the ammonia/amine ligands with sulfide moieties together.

Tuning the Electronic Structure of Atomically Precise Sn/Co/Se Nanoclusters via Redox Matching of Tin(IV) Surface Sites

A new strategy is reported to tailor the electronic properties of a superatomic metal chalcogenide cluster by redox matching the cluster core with surface tin(IV) sites. Two ternary clusters (SnR₂)₃Co₆Se₈L₆ (R = Me, ⁿBu) are synthesized by salt metathesis from the hexalithiated salt [Li₂(py)₂]₃Co₆Se₈L₆ and R₂SnCl₂. Cyclic and differential-pulse voltammetry studies reveal that the tristannylated clusters feature two new, near-degenerate, electronic states within the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap of the Co₆Se₈ core, which are attributed to the reduction of a surface tin site. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that no Sn···Se coordination is present in the solid state. The single-crystal X-ray structure of the hexalithiated salt starting material is reported for the tetrahydrofuran (THF) adduct variant [Li₂(THF)₂]₆Co₆Se₈L₆.

Insights into Formation and Relationship of Multimetallic Clusters: On the Way toward Bi-Rich Nanostructures

Bismuth-rich polyanions show a unique potential in constructing nanostructured bismuth-based materials, but they are still poorly investigated. We use a ternary precursor of the nominal composition "K₅Ga₂Bi₄" for the formation of [K(crypt-222)]⁺ salts of novel Bi-rich polyanions [Bi@Ga₈(Bi₂)₆]^q- (q = 3, 5; in 1), (Ga₂Bi₁₆)^4- (in 2), and [{Ru(cod)}₄Bi₁₈]^4- (in 3). Their bismuth contents exceed that of the largest homoatomic polyanion, Bi₁₁^3-. The numbers of bismuth atoms in the anions in 2 and 3 furthermore surmount that of the Bi-richest binary main-group anion, (Ge₄Bi₁₄)^4-, and they equal (2) or surmount (3) that reported for the anion and the cations with the largest number of Bi atoms so far, [K₂Zn₂₀Bi₁₆]^6-, [(Bi₈)Ru(Bi₈)]⁶⁺, and [(Bi₈)Au(Bi₈)]⁵⁺. Compounds 1 and 2 were obtained from reaction mixtures that contain [La(C₅Me₄H)₃], apparently assisting in the network formation without being included in the products. In the presence of [Ru(cod)(H₂CC(Me)CH₂)₂], yet another reaction pathway leads to the formation of the anions in 3 (conformers 3a and 3b), which are Bi-Bi linked dimers of two "[{Ru(cod)}₂Bi₉]^2-" subunits. They comprise the largest connected assemblies of Bi atoms within one molecule and may be viewed as snapshots on the way toward even larger polybismuthide units and, ultimately, new bismuth modifications. Mass spectrometry allowed insight into the processes in solution that precede the cluster formation. In-depth quantum chemical studies were applied to explain structural peculiarities, stabilities of the observed isomers, and bonding characteristics of these bismuth-rich nanoarchitectures. The work demonstrates the high potential of the method for the access of new Bi-based materials.

Ionic Liquid-Driven Formation of and Cation Exchange in Layered Sulfido Stannates - a CH2 Group Makes the Difference

Two types of layered sulfido stannates or a molecular cluster compound are obtained upon ionothermal treatment of the simple sulfido stannate salt K4 [SnS4 ]  ·  4H2 O that is based on binary tetrahedral [SnS4 ]4- anions. The formation of the respective products, novel compounds (C4 C1 C1 Im)2 [Sn3 S7 ] (1 a), (C4 C1 C2 Im)2 [Sn3 S7 ] (1 b), and (C4 C1 C2 Im)2 [Sn4 S9 ] (2) with layered anionic substructures, or the recently reported compound (C4 C1 C1 Im)4+x [Sn10 O4 S16 (SMe)4 ][An]x (A) comprising a molecular cluster anion, is controlled by both the choice of the ionic liquid cation and the reaction temperature. We report the scale-up of the syntheses by a factor of 100 with regard to other reported ionothermal syntheses of related compounds, and a procedure of how to isolate them in phase-pure form - both being rare observations in chalcogenido stannate chemistry in ionic liquids. Moreover, the synthesis of compound 1 a can be achieved by rapid cation exchange starting out from 1 b, which has not been reported for organic cations in any chalcogenido stannate salt to date.

Cluster Salts [Nb6 Cl12 (HIm)6 ]An (with HIm=1H-imidazole and A=Mineral Acid Anion, n=1 or 2) Made in and with Brønsted-basic Ionic Liquids and Liquid Mixtures

Four new hexanuclear niobium cluster compounds of the general formula [Nb6 Cl12 (HIm)6 ](A)n  ⋅ x(solvent molecule) (HIm=1H-imidazole, A=mineral acid anion, Cl- (n=2) (1), (SO4 )2- (n=1) (2), (CrO4 )2- (n=1) (3), and (HAsO4 )2- (n=1) (4)) were prepared. Their synthesis can be done in basic ionic liquids, which form on the addition of a mineral acid, which also delivers the counter anion for the final cluster compound, to an excess of the 1H-imidazole. Some addition of an auxiliary solvent, like methanol, improves the speed of crystallisation. The cluster unit comprises a hexanuclear Nb6 unit of octahedral shape with the edges bridged by Cl atoms and the exo sites being occupied by N-bonded 1H-imidazole ligands. The cluster cation carries sixteen cluster-based electrons. Between the NH groups of the ligands of the cluster unit, the anions and the co-crystallised water (1), or 1H-imidazole and methanol molecules (2, 3, and 4) a network of hydrogen bonds exists.

Towards Understanding the Reactivity and Optical Properties of Organosilicon Sulfide Clusters

We report the extension of the class of organotetrel sulfide clusters with further examples of the still rare silicon-based species, synthesized from RSiCl3 with R=phenyl (Ph, I), naphthyl (Np, II), and styryl (Sty, III) with Na2 S. Besides known [(PhSi)4 S6 ] (IV), new compounds [(NpSi)4 S6 ] (1) and [(StySi)4 S6 ] (2) were obtained, the first two of which underwent reactions with [AuCl(PPh3 )] to form ternary complexes. DFT studies of cluster dimers helped us understand the differences between the habit of {Si4 S6 }- and {Sn4 S6 }-based compounds. Crystalline 1 showed a pronounced nonlinear optical response, while for intrinsically amorphous 2, the chemical damage threshold seems to inhibit a corresponding observation. Calculations within the independent particle approximation served to rationalize and compare electronic and optical excitations of [(RSi)4 S6 ] clusters (R=Ph, Np). The calculations reproduced the measured data and allowed for the interpretation of the main spectroscopic features.

MeSi(CH2 SnRO)3 (R=Ph, Me3 SiCH2 ): Building Blocks for Triangular-Shaped Diorganotin Oxide Macrocycles

The syntheses of the novel silicon-bridged tris(tetraorganotin) compounds MeSi(CH2 SnPh2 R)3 (2, R=Ph; 5, R=Me3 SiCH2 ) and their halogen-substituted derivatives MeSi(CH2 SnPh(3-n) In )3 (3, n=1; 4, n=2) and MeSi(CH2 SnI2 R)3 (6, R=Me3 SiCH2 ) are reported. The reaction of compound 4 with di-t-butyltin oxide (t-Bu2 SnO)3 gives the oktokaideka-nuclear (18-nuclear) molecular diorganotin oxide [MeSi(CH2 SnPhO)3 ]6 (7) while the reaction of 6 with sodium hydroxide, NaOH, provides the trikonta-nuclear (30-nuclear) molecular diorganotin oxide [MeSi(CH2 SnRO)3 ]10 (8, R=Me3 SiCH2 ). Both 7 and 8 show belt-like ladder-type macrocyclic structures and are by far the biggest molecular diorganotin oxides reported to date. The compounds have been characterized by elemental analyses, electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), NMR spectroscopy, 1 H DOSY NMR spectroscopy (7), IR spectroscopy (7, 8), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (2, 7, 8).

Structural Expansion of Chalcogenido Tetrelates in Ionic Liquids by Incorporation of Sulfido Antimonate Units

Multinary chalcogenido (semi)metalate salts exhibit finely tunable optical properties based on the combination of metal and chalcogenide ions in their polyanionic substructure. Here, we present the structural expansion of chalcogenido germanate(IV) or stannate(IV) architectures with SbIII , which clearly affects the vibrational and optical absorption properties of the solid compounds. For the synthesis of the title compounds, [K4 (H2 O)4 ][Ge4 S10 ] or [K4 (H2 O)4 ][SnS4 ] were reacted with SbCl3 under ionothermal conditions in imidazolium-based ionic liquids. Salt metathesis at relatively low temperatures (120 °C or 150 °C) enabled the incorporation of (formally) Sb3+ ions into the anionic substructure of the precursors, and their modification to form (Cat)16 [Ge2 Sb2 S7 ]6 [GeS4 ] (1) and (Cat)6 [Sn10 O4 S20 ][Sb3 S4 ]2 (2 a and 2 b), wherein Cat=(C4 C1 C1 Im)+ (1 and 2 a) or (C4 C1 C2 Im)+ (2 b). In 1, germanium and antimony atoms are combined to form a rare noradamantane-type ternary molecular anion, six of which surround an {GeS4 } unit in a highly symmetric secondary structure, and finally crystallize in a diamond-like superstructure. In 2, supertetrahedral oxo-sulfido stannate clusters are generated, as known from the ionothermal treatment of the stannate precursor alone, yet, linked here into unprecedented one-dimensional strands with {Sb3 S4 } units as linkers. We discuss the single-crystal structures of these uncommon salts of ternary and quaternary chalcogenido (semi)metalate anions, as well as their Raman and UV-visible spectra.
