Bactericidal behavior of silver nanoparticle decorated nano-sized magnetic hydroxyapatite

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the most common cause of acute bacterial arthritis. Due to the increase in antibiotic resistance in these bacteria, the discovery of new antibacterial agents has become one of the hot topics in the scientific community. Here, we prepared a nano-sized porous biocompatible magnetic hydroxyapatite through a solvothermal method. Then, we adopted a post-synthesis modification strategy to modify its surface for the stabilization of Ag NPs through a green reduction by the euphorbia plant extract. Moreover, the results show that the prepared composite perfectly prevents the aggregation of Ag NPs. This composite was used as a bactericidal and antibiofilm agent against MRSA bacteria in an in vitro environment, which showed excellent results. Also, the cell viability assay indicates that the prepared composite has low cytotoxicity, making it a perfect antibacterial agent for in vivo experiments.

Hyaluronic acid-modified and verteporfin-loaded polylactic acid nanogels promote scarless wound healing by accelerating wound re-epithelialization and controlling scar formation

Wound healing is a common occurrence. However, delayed healing and aberrant scarring result in pathological wound healing. Accordingly, a scarless wound healing remains a significant clinical challenge. In this study, we constructed hyaluronic acid (HA)-modified and verteporfin (VP)-loaded polylactic acid (PLA) nanogels (HA/VP-PLA) to promote scarless wound healing by accelerating wound re-epithelialization and controlling scar formation. Owing to the unique structure of HA incorporating and coating in VP-loaded PLA nanoparticles, HA/VP-PLA could be topically applied on wound to achieve targeted delivery to fibroblasts. Then, HA/VP-PLA released HA and lactic acid (LA) to stimulate the proliferation and migration of fibroblasts, as well as VP to inhibit Yes-associated protein (YAP) expression and nuclear localization to suppress fibrosis. In vitro (skin fibroblasts) and in vivo (rat and rabbit models) experiments strongly suggested that HA/VP-PLA promoted scarless wound healing by accelerating wound re-epithelialization and controlling scar formation. Therefore, our work provides a feasible strategy for scarless wound healing, and the sophisticated HA/VP-PLA exhibit a great potential for clinical applications.

Biotechnological advancements towards water, food and medical healthcare: A review

The global health status is highly affected by the growing pace of urbanization, new lifestyles, climate changes, and resource exploitation. Modern technologies pave a promising way to deal with severe concerns toward sustainable development. Herein, we provided a comprehensive review of some popular biotechnological advancements regarding the progress achieved in water, food, and medicine, as the most substantial fields related to public health. The emergence of novel organic/inorganic materials has brought about significant improvement in conventional water treatment techniques, anti-fouling approaches, anti-microbial agents, food processing, biosensors, drug delivery systems, and implants. Particularly, a growing interest has been devoted to nanomaterials and their application for developing novel structures or improving the characteristics of standard components. Also, bioinspired materials have been widely used to improve the performance, efficiency, accuracy, stability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of traditional systems. On the other side, the fabrication of innovative devices for precisely monitoring and managing various ecosystem and human health issues is of great importance. Above all, exceptional advancements in designing ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), microelectromechanical systems (MEMs), and implantable medical devices have altered the future landscape of environmental and biomedical research. This review paper aimed to shed light on the wide-ranging materials and devices that have been developed for health applications and mainly focused on the impact of nanotechnology in this field.

Bonding and Strengthening the PLA Biopolymer in Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing

3D printing is a revolutionary additive manufacturing method that enables rapid prototyping and design flexibility. A variety of thermoplastic polymers can be used in printing. As it is necessary to reduce the consumption of petrochemical resources, alternative solutions are being researched, and the interest in using bioplastics and biocomposites is constantly growing. Often, however, the properties of biopolymers are insufficient and need to be improved to compete with petroleum-based plastics. The paper aims to analyze the available information on elements produced from more than one material, with additive manufacturing resulting from 3D printing using biopolymer Polylactic Acid (PLA). The study notes the possibility of modifying and improving the properties of PLA using layered printing or by modifying PLA filaments. Several modifications improving and changing the properties of PLA were also noted, including printing parameters when combined with other materials: process temperatures, filling, and surface development for various sample geometries.

In Situ Formation of Copper Phosphate on Hydroxyapatite for Wastewater Treatment

Here, we control the surface activity of hydroxyapatite (HAp) in wastewater treatment which undergoes peroxodisulfate (PDS) activation. Loading the catalytically active Cu species on HAp forms a copper phosphate in the outer layer of HAp. This modification turns a low active HAp into a high catalytically active catalyst in the dye degradation process. The optimal operational conditions were established to be [Cu–THAp]₀ = 1 g/L, [RhB]₀ = 20 mg/L, [PDS]₀ = 7.5 mmol/L, and pH = 3. The experiments indicate that the simultaneous presence of Cu-THAp and PDS synergistically affect the degradation process. Additionally, chemical and structural characterizations proved the stability and effectiveness of Cu-THAp. Therefore, this work introduces a simple approach to water purification through green and sustainable HAp-based materials.

Constructing a 3D interconnected "trap-zap" β-CDPs/Fe-g-C3N4 catalyst for efficient sulfamethoxazole degradation via peroxymonosulfate activation: Performance, mechanism, intermediates and toxicity

A novel and high-efficiency catalyst Fe doped g-C₃N₄ (Fe-g-C₃N₄) composited with β-cyclodextrin polymers (β-CDPs) was synthesized for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results showed that the catalyst was 3D interconnected porous structure. The degradation rate constant of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in β-CDPs/Fe-g-C₃N₄+PMS system was estimated to be 0.132 min^-1, which was 14.7 times and 2.2 times that of g-C₃N₄+PMS and Fe-g-C₃N₄+PMS system, respectively. In addition, the β-CDPs/Fe-g-C₃N₄ exhibited superior degradation performance in a wide pH range (3.0-9.0) and good selectivity in the presence of other inorganic anions and natural organics. Radical scavenging, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electrochemical measurements indicated that ¹O₂ and Fe(V)O were the main active species for SMX degradation in β-CDPs/Fe-g-C₃N₄+PMS system. Moreover, β-CDPs accelerated electron transfer between catalyst and PMS and promoted the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during PMS activation. The loading of β-CDPs increased the yields of Fe(V)O and ¹O₂ in the system and limited the leaching of Fe³⁺. In addition, the possible degradation pathways of SMX were described based on the intermediates detected by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and the toxicity of the intermediates was also evaluated. This work investigate the role of β-CDPs in PMS activation for the first time and develop a promising material with potential for water treatment.

A three-dimensional nerve guide conduit based on graphene foam/polycaprolactone

In this study, a novel nerve guide conduit was developed, based on a three-dimensional (3D) graphene conductive core grown, by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coupled with a polycaprolactone (PCL) polymer coating. Firstly, the monolithic 3D-graphene foam (3D-GF) was synthesized on Ni foam templates via inductive heating CVD, subsequently, Ni/Graphene samples were dipped successively in PCL and cyclododecane (CDD) solutions prior to the removal of Ni from the 3D-GF/PCL scaffold in FeCl₃. Our results showed that the electrical conductivity of the polymer composites reached to 25 S.m^-1 after incorporation of 3D-GF. Moreover, the mechanical properties of 3D-GF/PCL composite scaffold were enhanced with respect to the same geometry of PCL scaffolds. The wettability, surface porosity, and morphology did not show any significant changes, while the PC12 cell proliferation and extension were increased for the developed 3D-GF/PCL nanocomposite. It can be concluded that 3D-GF/PCL nanocomposites could be good candidates to utilize as a versatile system for the engineering of peripheral nerve tissue.

A new cancellous bone material of silk fibroin/cellulose dual network composite aerogel reinforced by nano-hydroxyapatite filler

Composites materials comprised of biopolymeric aerogel matrices and inorganic nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) fillers have received considerable attention in bone engineering. Although with significant progress in aerogel-based biomaterials, the brittleness and low strengths limit the application. The improvements in toughness and mechanical strength of aerogel-based biomaterials are in great need. In this work, an alkali urea system was used to dissolve, regenerate and gelate cellulose and silk fibroin (SF) to prepare composite aerosol. A dual network structure was shaped in the composite aerosol materials interlaced by sheet-like SF and reticular cellulose wrapping n-HA on the surface. Through uniaxial compression, the density of the composite aerogel material was close to the one of natural bone, and mechanical strength and toughness were high. Our work indicates that the composite aerogel has the same mechanical strength range as cancellous bone when the ratio of cellulose, n-HA and SF being 8:1:1. In vitro cell culture showed HEK-293T cells cultured on composite aerogels had high ability of adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. Totally, the presented biodegradable composite aerogel has application potential in bone tissue engineering.

Extrusion-Based 3D Printing Applications of PLA Composites: A Review

Polylactic acid (PLA) is the most widely used raw material in extrusion-based three-dimensional (3D) printing (fused deposition modeling, FDM approach) in many areas since it is biodegradable and environmentally friendly, however its utilization is limited due to some of its disadvantages such as mechanical weakness, water solubility rate, etc. FDM is a simple and more cost-effective fabrication process compared to other 3D printing techniques. Unfortunately, there are deficiencies of the FDM approach, such as mechanical weakness of the FDM parts compared to the parts produced by the conventional injection and compression molding methods. Preparation of PLA composites with suitable additives is the most useful technique to improve the properties of the 3D-printed PLA parts obtained by the FDM method. In the last decade, newly developed PLA composites find large usage areas both in academic and industrial circles. This review focuses on the chemistry and properties of pure PLA and also the preparation methods of the PLA composites which will be used as a raw material in 3D printers. The main drawbacks of the pure PLA filaments and the necessity for the preparation of PLA composites which will be employed in the FDM-based 3D printing applications is also discussed in the first part. The current methods to obtain PLA composites as raw materials to be used as filaments in the extrusion-based 3D printing are given in the second part. The applications of the novel PLA composites by utilizing the FDM-based 3D printing technology in the fields of biomedical, tissue engineering, human bone repair, antibacterial, bioprinting, electrical conductivity, electromagnetic, sensor, battery, automotive, aviation, four-dimensional (4D) printing, smart textile, environmental, and luminescence applications are presented and critically discussed in the third part of this review.

Co-Catalytic Action of Faceted Non-Noble Metal Deposits on Titania Photocatalyst for Multielectron Oxygen Reduction

In order to clarify the reason of often reported low photocatalytic activity of rutile titania compared to that of anatase titania and the sluggish kinetics for oxygen reduction of rutile titania, in this study, faceted copper(I) oxide (Cu2O) particles (FCPs), i.e., cube, cuboctahedron and octahedron, were deposited onto rutile particles by an in-situ wet chemical method, and the co-catalytic action of FCPs was studied in the oxidative decomposition of acetic acid. The oxygen reduction reaction kinetics of bare and FCP-loaded titania samples in photodecomposition of organic compounds were investigated by light-intensity dependence measurement. FCPs serve as the specific sites (sink) which accumulate excited electrons to drive multielectron oxygen reduction reactions, as the counter reaction in photodecomposition of organic compounds by positive holes, which significantly improves the photocatalytic activity of rutile titania particles.
