Design and Advanced Manufacturing of NU-1000 Metal-Organic Frameworks with Future Perspectives for Environmental and Renewable Energy Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a relatively new family of materials that attract lots of attention thanks to their unique features such as hierarchical porosity, active metal centers, versatility of linkers/metal nodes, and large surface area. Among the extended list of MOFs, Zr-based-MOFs demonstrate comparably superior chemical and thermal stabilities, making them ideal candidates for energy and environmental applications. As a Zr-MOF, NU-1000 is first synthesized at Northwestern University. A comprehensive review of various approaches to the synthesis of NU-1000 MOFs for obtaining unique surface properties (e.g., diverse surface morphologies, large surface area, and particular pore size distribution) and their applications in the catalysis (electro-, and photo-catalysis), CO2 reduction, batteries, hydrogen storage, gas storage/separation, and other environmental fields are presented. The review further outlines the current challenges in the development of NU-1000 MOFs and their derivatives in practical applications, revealing areas for future investigation.

Recent advanced strategies for bimetallenes toward electrocatalytic energy conversion reactions

Designing low-dimensional nanomaterials is vital to address the energy and environmental crisis by means of electrocatalytic conversion reactions. Bimetallenes, as an emerging class of 2D materials, present promise for electrocatalytic conversion reactions. By leveraging atomically thin layers, bimetallenes present unsaturated surface coordination, high specific surface area and high conductivity, which are all indispensable features for heterogeneous electrochemical reactions. However, the intrinsic activity and stability of bimetallenes needs to be improved further for bimetallene electrocatalysts, due to the higher demands of practical applications. Recently, many strategies have been developed to optimize the chemical or electronic structure to accommodate transfer of reactants, adsorption or desorption of intermediates, and dissociation of products. Considering that most such work focuses on adjusting the structure, this review offers in-depth insight into recent representative strategies for optimizing bimetallene electrocatalysts, mainly including alloying, strain effects, ligand effects, defects and heteroatom doping. Moreover, by summarizing the performance of bimetallenes optimized using various strategies, we provide a means to understand structure-property relationships. In addition, future prospects and challenges are discussed for further development of bimetallene electrocatalysts.

Tailoring Metal-Organic Frameworks and Derived Materials for High-Performance Zinc-Air and Alkaline Batteries

Developing multifunctional materials from earth-abundant elements is urgently needed to satisfy the demand for sustainable energy. Herein, we demonstrate a facile approach for the preparation of a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived Fe₂O₃/C, composited with N-doped reduced graphene oxide (MO-rGO). MO-rGO exhibits excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activities toward the oxygen evolution reaction (η_j=10 = 273 mV) and the oxygen reduction reaction (half-wave potential = 0.77 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode) with a low ΔE_OER-ORR of 0.88 V in alkaline solutions. A Zn-air battery based on the MO-rGO cathode displays a high specific energy of over 903 W h kg_Zn^-1 (∼290 mW h cm^-2), an excellent power density of 148 mW cm^-2, and an open-circuit voltage of 1.430 V, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C + RuO₂ catalyst. We also hydrothermally synthesized a Ni-MOF that was partially transformed into a Ni-Co-layered double hydroxide (MOF-LDH). A MO-rGO||MOF-LDH alkaline battery exhibits a specific energy of 42.6 W h kg_total mass^-1 (106.5 μW h cm^-2) and an outstanding specific power of 9.8 kW kg_total mass^-1 (24.5 mW cm^-2). This work demonstrates the potential of MOFs and MOF-derived compounds for designing innovative multifunctional materials for catalysis, electrochemical energy storage, and beyond.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as Electrocatalysts

Transition metal complexes are well-known homogeneous electrocatalysts. In this regard, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be considered as an ensemble of transition metal complexes ordered in a periodic arrangement. In addition, MOFs have several additional positive structural features that make them suitable for electrocatalysis, including large surface area, high porosity, and high content of accessible transition metal with exchangeable coordination positions. The present review describes the current state in the use of MOFs as electrocatalysts, both as host of electroactive guests and their direct electrocatalytic activity, particularly in the case of bimetallic MOFs. The field of MOF-derived materials is purposely not covered, focusing on the direct use of MOFs or its composites as electrocatalysts. Special attention has been paid to present strategies to overcome their poor electrical conductivity and limited stability.

Pillared-MOF@NiV-LDH Composite as a Remarkable Electrocatalyst for Water Oxidation

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) represents a highly important electrochemical transformation in energy storage and conversion technologies. Considering the low rate of this four-electron half-reaction, there is a demand for efficient, stable, and noble-metal-free electrocatalysts to improve the kinetic and economical parameters. In this work, a new pillared-MOF@NiV-LDH nanocomposite based on a Co^II metal-organic framework (pillared-MOF) and heterometallic Ni/V-layered double hydroxide (NiV-LDH) was assembled via a simple protocol, characterized, and explored as an electrocatalyst in OER. A remarkable electrocatalytic efficiency of pillared-MOF@NiV-LDH in 1 M KOH is evidenced by a low overpotential (238 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 current density) and a small value of the Tafel slope (62 mV dec^-1). These parameters are very close to those of the reference IrO₂ electrocatalyst and are superior to the majority of the LDH- and MOF-based systems previously applied for OER. Excellent stability of pillared-MOF@NiV-LDH was confirmed by the chronopotentiometry tests for 70 h and linear-sweep voltammetry after 7000 cycles. Features such as rich electroactive sites, porous structure, high surface area, and synergic effect between pillared-MOF and NiV-LDH are likely responsible for the remarkable electrocatalytic efficiency of this electrocatalyst in OER. Despite prior reports on the application of NiV-LDH in OER, the present study describes the first example where this type of LDH is blended with MOF to generate a nanocomposite material. The interface between the two components of the composite can improve the electronic structure and, in turn, the electrocatalytic behavior. The introduction of this composite paves the way toward the synthesis of other multicomponent materials with potential applications in different energy fields.

Postsynthetic Modification of NU-1000 for Designing a Polyoxometalate-Containing Nanocomposite with Enhanced Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Performance

For the advancement of laser technologies and optical engineering, various types of new inorganic and organic materials are emerging. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) reveal a promising use in nonlinear optics, given the presence of organic linkers, metal cluster nodes, and possible delocalization of π-electron systems. These properties can be further enhanced by the inclusion of solely inorganic materials such as polyoxometalates as prospective low-cost electron-acceptor species. In this study, a novel hybrid nanocomposite, namely, SiW₁₂@NU-1000 composed of SiW₁₂ (H₄SiW₁₂O₄₀) and Zr-based MOF (NU-1000), was assembled, completely characterized, and thoroughly investigated in terms of its nonlinear optical (NLO) performance. The third-order NLO behavior of the developed system was assessed by Z-scan measurements using a 532 nm laser. The effect of two-photon absorption and self-focusing was significant in both NU-1000 and SiW₁₂@NU-1000. Experimental studies suggested a much superior NLO performance of SiW₁₂@NU-1000 if compared to that of NU-1000, which can be assigned to the charge-energy transfer between SiW₁₂ and NU-1000. Negligible light scattering, good stability, and facile postsynthetic fabrication method can promote the applicability of the SiW₁₂@NU-1000 nanocomposite for various optoelectronic purposes. This research may thus open new horizons to improve and enhance the NLO performance of MOF-based materials through π-electron delocalization and compositing metal-organic networks with inorganic molecules as electron acceptors, paving the way for the generation of novel types of hybrid materials for prospective NLO applications.

Fine-Tuning the Electrocatalytic Regeneration of NADH Cofactor Using [Rh(Cp*)(bpy)Cl]+-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework Films

Electrochemical regeneration of the reduced form of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) cofactor catalyzed by immobilized [Rh(Cp*)(bpy)Cl]⁺ is a promising approach for the enzymatic synthesis of many valuable chemicals with NAD-dependent dehydrogenases. However, rational control of the efficiency is often limited by the irregular structure of the electrode/electrolyte interface and the accessibility of the molecular catalyst. Here, we propose an electrochemical system for NADH cofactor regeneration, based on highly ordered three- dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework (NU-1000) films. [Rh(Cp*)(bpy)Cl]⁺ is incorporated at the zirconium nodes of NU-1000 via solvent-assisted ligand incorporation (SALI), leading to a diffusion-controlled behavior, associated with an electron hopping mechanism. Varying the ratio of redox-active [Rh(Cp*)(bpy)Cl]⁺ and inactive postgrafting agents enables the elaboration of functional electrodes with tunable electrocatalytic activity for NADH regeneration. The exceptionally high faradic efficiency of 97%, associated with a very high turnover frequency (TOF) of ∼1400 h^-1 for NADH regeneration, and the total turnover number (TTN) of over 20000 for the enzymatic conversion from pyruvate to l-lactate, when coupled with l-lactate dehydrogenases (LDH) as a model reaction, open up promising perspectives for employing these electrodes in various alternative bioelectrosynthesis approaches.

Electrochemical Sensor Based on Ni-Co Layered Double Hydroxide Hollow Nanostructures for Ultrasensitive Detection of Sumatriptan and Naproxen

In this work, Ni-Co layered double hydroxide (Ni-Co LDH) hollow nanostructures were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. A screen-printed electrode (SPE) surface was modified with as-fabricated Ni-Co LDHs to achieve a new sensing platform for determination of sumatriptan. The electrochemical behavior of the Ni-Co LDH-modified SPE (Ni-CO LDH/SPE) for sumatriptan determination was investigated using voltammetric methods. Compared with bare SPE, the presence of Ni-Co LDH was effective in the enhancement of electron transport rate between the electrode and analyte, as well as in the significant reduction of the overpotential of sumatriptan oxidation. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was applied to perform a quantitative analysis of sumatriptan. The linearity range was found to be between 0.01 and 435.0 μM. The limits of detection (LOD) and sensitivity were 0.002 ± 0.0001 μM and 0.1017 ± 0.0001 μA/μM, respectively. In addition, the performance of the Ni-CO LDH/SPE for the determination of sumatriptan in the presence of naproxen was studied. Simultaneous analysis of sumatriptan with naproxen showed well-separated peaks leading to a quick and selective analysis of sumatriptan. Furthermore, the practical applicability of the prepared Ni-CO LDH/SPE sensor was examined in pharmaceutical and biological samples with satisfactory recovery results.

Further Insight into the Conversion of a Ni-Fe Metal-Organic Framework during Water-Oxidation Reaction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are extensively investigated as catalysts in the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER). A Ni-Fe MOF with 2,5-dihydroxy terephthalate as a linker has been claimed to be among the most efficient catalysts for the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions. Herein, the MOF stability under the OER was reinvestigated by electrochemical methods, X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, operando visible spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The peaks corresponding to the carboxylate group are observed at 1420 and 1520 cm^-1 using Raman spectroscopy. The peaks disappear after the reaction, suggesting the removal of the carboxylate group. A drop in carbon content but growth in oxygen content after the OER was detected by energy-dispersive spectra. This shows that after the OER, the surface of MOF is oxidized. SEM images also show deep restructures in the surface morphology of this Ni-Fe MOF after the OER. Nuclear magnetic resonance and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry show the decomposition of the linker in alkaline conditions and even in the absence of potential. These experimental data indicate that during the OER, the synthesized MOF transforms to a Fe-Ni-layered double hydroxide, and the formed metal oxide is a candidate for the OER catalysis. Generalization is not true; however, taken together, these findings suggest that the stability of Ni-Fe MOFs under harsh oxidation conditions should be reconsidered.

Metal nitride-based nanostructures for electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production

The over-dependence on fossil fuels is one of the critical issues to be addressed for combating greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen, one of the promising alternatives to fossil fuels, is renewable, carbon-free, and non-polluting gas. The complete utilization of hydrogen in every sector ranging from small to large scale could hugely benefit in mitigating climate change. One of the key aspects of the hydrogen sector is its production via cost-effective and safe ways. Electrolysis and photocatalysis are well-known processes for hydrogen production and their efficiency relies on electrocatalysts, which are generally noble metals. The usage of noble metals as catalysts makes these processes costly and their scarcity is also a limiting factor. Metal nitrides and their porous counterparts have drawn considerable attention from researchers due to their good promise for hydrogen production. Their properties such as active metal centres, nitrogen functionalities, and porous features such as surface area, pore-volume, and tunable pore size could play an important role in electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production. This review focuses on the recent developments in metal nitrides from their synthesis methods point of view. Much attention is given to the emergence of new synthesis techniques, methods, and processes of synthesizing the metal nitride nanostructures. The applications of electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production are summarized. Overall, this review will provide useful information to researchers working in the field of metal nitrides and their application for hydrogen production.

Unraveling a Graphene Exfoliation Technique Analogy in the Making of Ultrathin Nickel-Iron Oxyhydroxides@Nickel Foam to Promote the OER

One of the major objectives of using the improved Hummers' method was to exfoliate the graphene layers by oxidizing and thereafter reducing them to obtain highly conductive reduced graphene layers, which can be used in the construction of electronic devices or as a part of catalyst composites in energy conversion reactions. Herein, we have employed a similar idea to exfoliate the layered double hydroxide (LDH), which is proposed as a promising material for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis. Usually, the efficiency of these materials is largely restricted due to their sheetlike morphology, which is susceptible to stacking. In this work, NiFe-LDH sheets were fabricated on nickel foam in a one-step co-precipitation technique and their ultrathin nanosheets (∼2 nm) are obtained by in situ oxygen-plasma-controlled exfoliation. In addition, the oxygen vacancies in exfoliated sheets were generated by a chemical reduction method that further improved the electronic conductivity and overall electrocatalytic performance of the catalyst. This approach can address the limitations of NiFe-LDH, such as poor conductivity and low stability, making it more efficient for electrocatalysis. It is also observed that the catalyst having 60 s O-plasma exposure after chemical reduction, i.e., NiFe-OOH_OV, outperformed remaining electrocatalysts and exhibited superior OER activity with a low overpotential of 330 mV to achieve a high current density of 50 mA cm^-2. The catalyst also displayed an ECSA-normalized OER overpotential of 288 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and exhibited excellent long-term stability (120 h) in an alkaline electrolyte. Remarkably, ultrathin defect-rich catalyst continuously produced O₂, resulting in a high faradaic efficiency of 98.1% for the OER.

Graphene Quantum Dots-Based Nanocomposites Applied in Electrochemical Sensors: A Recent Survey

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have been widely investigated in recent years due to their outstanding physicochemical properties. Their remarkable characteristics allied to their capability of being easily synthesized and combined with other materials have allowed their use as electrochemical sensing platforms. In this work, we survey recent applications of GQDs-based nanocomposites in electrochemical sensors and biosensors. Firstly, the main characteristics and synthesis methods of GQDs are addressed. Next, the strategies generally used to obtain the GQDs nanocomposites are discussed. Emphasis is given on the applications of GQDs combined with distinct 0D, 1D, 2D nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), ionic liquids, as well as other types of materials, in varied electrochemical sensors and biosensors for detecting analytes of environmental, medical, and agricultural interest. We also discuss the current trends and challenges towards real applications of GQDs in electrochemical sensors.

Dual-functional porous MOFs with hierarchical guest encapsulation for room-temperature phosphorescence and white-light-emission

The development of optical materials with room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and white light emission (WLEDs) is highly desirable and remains a challenging task. Herein, a porous metal-organic framework PCN-921 with a high quantum yield (Φ_F = 93.6%) was achieved. To make full use of the advantages of the high porosity of PCN-921, we hierarchically encapsulated different guest molecules coronene and rhodamine B (RhB) into the framework. Unsurprisingly, the hybrid material coronene@PCN-921 was obtained after in situ encapsulation of the guest coronene into the framework, and it exhibits obvious RTP behavior with a long phosphorescence lifetime of 62.5 ns. Subsequently, second guest RhB molecules were introduced after soaking in RhB solution and the material RhB@coronene@PCN-921 was achieved. Interestingly, it exhibits white light emission with the CIE coordinates of (0.29, 0.34), and can be used as a high performance WLED lamp. This is the first work on dual-functional hybrid dyes@MOFs with hierarchical guest encapsulation for RTP and white light emission, which suggests the potential applications of MOFs in multifunctional optical devices.

Porous Fe5Si3 intermetallic anode for the oxygen evolution reaction in acidic electrolytes

Here, we show that a reactive synthesis method of mixed elemental powders can be used to synthesize a porous electrode consisting of an intermetallic Fe₅Si₃ that exhibits catalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic solutions, which is capable of delivering 10 mA cm^-2 at an overpotential of 0.73 V and a small Tafel slope of ~ 381.8 mV dec^-1. The amorphous silica formed in the anode surface during the electrochemical process is multifunctional, as it protects the electrode substrate from corrosion and acts as electrocatalysts for OER. Remarkably, the Si-based intermetallics can be generalized to include other OER catalytic elements (Mn, Fe, Co), including Mn-Si and Co-Si intermetallics.

Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Behavior of an Amide-Tricarboxylate Zinc(II) Metal-Organic Framework with Two-Fold 3D+3D Interpenetration

A new metal-organic framework (MOF), [Zn₄(μ₄-O)(μ₆-L)₂(H₂O)₂]_n·nDMF (ZSTU-10), was assembled from zinc(II) nitrate and N,N',N″-bis(4-carboxylate)trimesicamide linkers and fully characterized. Its crystal structure discloses an intricate two-fold 3D+3D interpenetrated MOF driven by the [Zn₄(μ₄-O)]-based tetragonal secondary building units and the C3-symmetric tris-amide-tricarboxylate linkers (μ₆-L^3-). Topological analysis of ZSTU-10 reveals two interpenetrated 3,6-connected nets with an rtl (rutile) topology. Z-Scan analysis at 532 nm was conducted to study a nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior of ZSTU-10. The nonlinear responses of ZSTU-10 were explored under various laser intensities, revealing notable third-order NLO properties in the visible region. A large two-photon absorption at lower incident intensities highlights the fact that ZSTU-10 can be applied in optical limiting devices as well as optical modulators. Moreover, a nonlinear refractive index (n₂) is indicative of a self-defocusing behavior. This work thus expands a family of novel MOF materials with remarkable optical properties.

Instantaneous Sonophotocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline over NU-1000@ZnIn2S4 Core-Shell Nanorods as a Robust and Eco-friendly Catalyst

The universal pollution of diverse water bodies and declined water quality represent very important environmental problems. The development of new and efficient photocatalytic water treatment systems based on the Z-scheme mechanisms can contribute to tackling such problems. This study reports the preparation, full characterization, and detailed sonophotocatalytic activity of a new series of hybrid NU@ZIS nanocomposites, which comprise a p-n heterojunction of 3D Zr(IV) metal-organic framework nanorods (NU-1000) and photoactive ZnIn₂S₄ (ZIS) nanostars. Among the obtained materials with varying content of ZIS (5, 10, 20, and 30%) on the surface of NU-1000, the NU@ZIS20 nanocomposite revealed an ultrahigh catalytic performance and recyclability in a quick visible-light-induced degradation of the tetracycline antibiotic in water under sonophotocatalytic conditions. Moreover, increased activity of NU@ZIS20 can be ascribed to the formation of a p-n heterojunction between NU-1000 and ZIS, and a synergistic effect of these components, leading to a high level of radical production, facilitating a Z-scheme charge carrier transfer and reducing the recombination of charge carriers. The radical trapping tests revealed that ^•OH, ^•O₂^-, and h⁺ are the major active species in the sonophotocatalytic degradation of tetracycline. Possible mechanism and mineralization pathways were introduced. Cytotoxicity of NU@ZIS20 and aquatic toxicity of water samples after tetracycline degradation were also assessed, showing good biocompatibility of the catalyst and efficacy of sonophotocatalytic protocols to produce water that does not affect the growth of bacteria. Finally, the obtained nanocomposites and developed photocatalytic processes can represent an interesting approach toward diverse environmental applications in water remediation and the elimination of other types of organic pollutants.

Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework-Based Fluorescent Sensor Arrays to Discriminate and Quantify Ingredients of Natural Medicine

The discrimination and quantification of the ingredients from natural medicines are a challenging issue due to their complicated and various structures. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great promise in sensing applications. Here, we report a fluorescent sensor array for rapid identification of some natural compounds using a sensor array composed of four kinds of lanthanide (Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺) fluorescent MOFs (Ln-MOFs), which have diversified fluorescent responses to 26 active/toxic compounds including 12 saponins, 7 flavonoids, 3 stilbenes, and 4 anthraquinones. The fluorescence of the Ln-MOFs after reaction with the compounds was summarized as datasets and processed by principle component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) methods. The corresponding responses of the 4 types of compounds are well separated on 2D/3D PCA score plots and HCA dendrograms. We have also tested typical blind samples by concentration-dependent PCA, and an accuracy of 100% was obtained. In addition, the response mechanisms of the Ln-MOFs to the compounds were also studied. Compared with traditional methods using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, the developed fluorescent sensor array provides a more efficient and economic strategy to discriminate various active/toxic ingredients in natural medicine.

Cd-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Selective Turn-On Fluorescent DMSO Residual Sensing

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a universally used solvent in various synthetic reactions, and trace amounts of DMSO residual are often seen on the surface of chemical product. It is difficult to quickly determine whether the residual DMSO is washed completely. This work reports a Cd^II metal-organic framework (MOF) SXU-4 which can detect trace amounts of DMSO in various solvents. Fluorescence experiments reveal its turn-on fluorescence effect toward DMSO with high selectivity and sensitivity, indicating that it can be used as an effective luminescent probe for rapid chemical product purity detection by testing the washing solution. Crystallographically characterized DMSO loaded SXU-4 (DMSO@SXU-4), in combination with computational results uncover that the enhanced DMSO-MOF conjugation through multiple DMSO-MOF supramolecule interactions and charge rearrangement are the main causes of fluorescence intensification.

Peptide-functionalized metal-organic framework nanocomposite for ultrasensitive detection of secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine with practical application

In this work, we have prepared peptide-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as signal-amplifying tags for the detection of secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC). Furthermore, enzyme-MOF nanocomposites are fabricated via a coprecipitation strategy between horse radish peroxidase (HRP) and ZIF-90, where ZIF-90 is used as a protective support for HRP immobilization. Meanwhile, the peptide sequence has been designed as SPARC-binding peptide, which imparts biorecognition functionality to HRP@ZIF-90 for performing a colorimetric sensor. Therefore, during the test, HRP molecules can be quickly released from nanocomposites by acidic condition to catalyze chromogenic reaction, enabling the ultrasensitive detection of SPARC with a low detection limit of 30 fg/mL. Moreover, the content of SPARC in colon cancer tissues with different degrees of differentiation can be determined with this sensor, demonstrating that the expression of SPARC is closely related to the occurrence, invasion and metastasis of human colon cancer. These results may show the potential applications of this biosensor in SPARC fundamental research as well as clinical diagnosis in the future.

Luminescent triphenylamine-based metal-organic frameworks: recent advances in nitroaromatics detection

Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs), as one branch of MOFs, have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their good crystallinity, structural diversity, tunable porosity and easily induced fluorescence emission. Importantly, their photoluminescence (PL) properties can be adjusted by altering metal ions or metal clusters and organic ligands in one hybrid system. Among the various sensing applications, using LMOFs as chemical sensors to detect the explosive and environment pollution causing nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) is an important topic. In this account, we describe the recent advancements in the field of NAC detection by LMOFs based on the triphenylamine (TPA) unit as the π-conjugated fluorophore.
