Abstract
Persistent water contaminants include a variety of substances that evade natural cleaning processes posing severe risks to ecosystems. Their adsorptive elimination is a key approach to safer attenuation. Herein we present the design and development of Prussian blue incorporated polypyrrole (PPY/PB) hybrid nanocomposite as a high-performance adsorbent for the elimination of malachite green (M.G.), isoniazid (INH) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) water contaminants. The nanocomposite synthesis was favored by strong dopant-polymer interactions, leading to a PPY/PB material with enhanced electro-active surface area compared to pristine PPY. The structure-activity response of the nanocomposite for the adsorption of target contaminants was unveiled by evaluating its maximum adsorption capacities under environmentally viable conditions. In-depth analysis and optimization of adsorption influencing factors (pH, temperature, and adsorbent dose) were performed. Using equilibrium studies, kinetic model fitting, aided with FTIR analysis, a multi-step mechanism for the adsorption of target contaminants on the nanocomposite was proposed. Furthermore, the PPY/PB nanocomposite also acts as a catalyst, enabling contaminant elimination following a synergistic scheme that was demonstrated using 4-NP contaminant. The synergetic adsorption and catalytic degradation of 4-NP using PPY/PB as adsorbent and catalyst was demonstrated in the presence of NaBH4 as a reducing agent in absence of light. In summary, this work highlights the targeted design of adsorbent, its optimization for adsorptive avidity, and the synergistic role of adsorption trapping in the catalytic degradation of persistent contaminants.

Abstract
The growing concerns about environmental pollution, particularly water pollution, are causing an increasing alarm in modern society. One promising approach to address this issue involves engineering existing materials to enhance their effectiveness. A one-step solvothermal reconstruction approach was used to build an eco-friendly two-dimensional (2D) AlNiZn-LDH/BDC MOF composite. The characterizations confirm the formation of a metal-organic framework (MOF) at the layered double hydroxide (LDH) surface. The resulting synthesized material, 2D AlNiZn-LDH/BDC MOF, demonstrated remarkable efficacy in decontaminating methylene blue (MB), a model cationic dye found in water systems. The removal performance of 2D AlNiZn-LDH/BDC MOF was significantly higher than that of pristine 2D AlNiZn-LDH. This improvement shows the potential to increase the adsorption capabilities of nanoporous LDH materials by incorporating organic ligands and integrating meso-/microporosity through MOF formation on their surfaces. Furthermore, their kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic studies elucidated the adsorption behavior of this composite material. The results of synthesized MOF showed excellent removal efficiency (92.27%) of 10 ppm of MB aqueous solution as compared to pristine LDH. Additionally, the as-synthesized adsorbent could be regenerated for six successive cycles. This method holds promise for the synthesis of novel and highly effective materials to combat water pollution, laying the groundwork for potential advancements in diverse applications.

Abstract
The coexistence of inorganic and organic contaminants is a challenge for real-life water treatment applications. Therefore, in this research, we used NH2-MIL-125(Ti) to evaluate the single adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) or Rhodamine B (RhB) in an aqueous solution and further investigate simultaneous adsorption experiments to compare the adsorption behavior changes. The main influencing factors, for example, reaction time, initial concentration, reaction temperature, and pH were studied in detail. In all reaction systems, the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models were well illuminated the adsorption progress of Cr(VI) and RhB. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. As compared to the single system, the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) in the binary system gradually decreased as the additive amount of RhB increased, whereas the adsorption capacity of RhB in the binary system was expanded brilliantly. When the binary reaction system contained 100 mg/L Cr(VI), the removal rate of RhB increased to 97.58%. The formation of Cr(VI)-RhB and Cr(III)-RhB complexes was the cause that provided facilitation for the adsorption of RhB. These findings prove that the interactions during the water treatment process between contaminants may obtain additional benefits, contributing to a better adsorption capacity of co-existing contaminant.

Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as promising material because of their intrinsic features including the porosity and high surface area. Further, structural tunability of MOFs by following the principles of reticular chemistry, the MOFs can be functionalized for the high adsorption performance as well as adsorptive removal of target materials. However, there are still some major concerns associated with MOFs limiting their commercialization as promising adsorbents for waste-water treatment. The cost, toxicity and regenerability are the major issues to be addressed for MOFs to get insightful results. In this article, we have concise the current strategies to enhance the adsorption capacity of MOFs during the water-treatment for the removal of toxic dyes, pharmaceuticals, and heavy metals. Further, we have also discussed the role of metallic nodes, linkers and associated functional groups for effective removal of toxic water pollutants. In addition to conformist overview, we have critically analyzed the MOFs as adsorbents in terms of toxicity, cost and regenerability. These factors are utmost important to address before commercialization of MOFs as adsorbents for water-treatment. Finally, some future perspectives are discussed to give directions for potential research.

Abstract
Structure engineering of zirconium-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) aims to develop efficient catalysts for transforming intermittent renewable energy into value-added chemical fuels. In order to have a deeper understanding of industrial scaling, it is vital to ascertain the favourable operational parameters that are necessary for projecting at the atomic level. The proposed paradigm provides a robust basis for the efficient design of MOFs based heterogeneous photocatalysts. In this study, set of defective MOF (D-NUiO66) was effectively produced using a modular acidic method. Afterwards, the D-NUiO66 was combined with CeO2 to form the D-CeNUiO66 heterojunction for the purpose of carbon dioxide reduction. The morphological aspect of the composite investigation suggested that D-CeNUiO66 had a mesoporous structure with favourable adsorption properties. The optimized D-CeNUiO66 photocatalyst showed the high activity for the reduction of CO2 to CO, with a rate of 38.6 µmolg-1h-1 and demonstrated remarkable repeatability in terms of CO production. The incorporation of defect sites in the D-NUiO66 enhanced the light response to visible light, resulting in reduced band gap of 2.9 eV. The photoelectrochemical tests indicated that the introduction of defects in the UiO66 and coupling CeO2 in the D-CeNUiO66 composite induced fast charge transfer, therefore suppressing the charge recombination rate. This study provides valuable insights into the use of defective engineering and heterojunction approaches to metal-organic frameworks for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
Due to their high anion exchange and memory effect, the layered double hydroxides (LHDs) have wide applications for some areas. In this work, an efficient and green recycling route for layered double hydroxide based adsorbents is proposed specifically for application as a poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) heat stabilizer without requiring secondary calcination. Conventional magnesium-aluminum hydrotalcite was synthesized using the hydrothermal method followed by removal of carbonate anion (CO32-) between LDH layers by calcination. The adsorption of perchlorate anion (ClO4-) by the memory effect of calcined LDHs with and without ultrasound assistance was compared. Using ultrasound assistance, the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbents (291.89 mg/g) was increased, and the adsorption process was fitted using the kinetic Elovich rate equation (R2 = 0.992) and Langmuir adsorption model (R2 = 0.996). This material was characterized using XRD, FT-IR, EDS, and TGA which demonstrated that ClO4- was intercalated into the hydrotalcite layer successfully. The recycled adsorbents were used to augment a commercial calcium-zinc-based PVC stabilizer package applied in a epoxidized soybean oil plasticized cast sheet which is based on an emulsion type PVC homopolymer resin. Use of perchlorate intercalated LDH augmentation yielded significant improvement to static heat resistance as indicated by the degree of discoloration with a life extension of approximately 60 min. The improved stability was corroborated by evaluation of HCl gas evolved during thermal degradation using conductivity change curves and the Congo red test.

Abstract
For sensitive detection of the L-fuculokinase genome related to the Haemophilus influenzae (H. influenzae), this research work demonstrates the label-free electrochemical-based oligonucleotide genosensing assay relying on the performing hybridization process. To enhance the electrochemical responses, multiple electrochemical modifier-tagged agents were effectively utilized. For attaining this goal, NiCr-layered double hydroxide (NiCr LDH) has been synthesized and combined with biochar (BC) to create an efficient electrochemical signal amplifier that has been immobilized on the surface of the bare Au electrode. Low detection and quantification limits (LOD and LOQ) associated with the designed genosensing bio-platform to detect L-fuculokinase have been achieved to 6.14 fM and 11 fM, respectively. Moreover, the wide linear range of 0.1 to 1000 pM demonstrates the capability of the designed platform. Investigated were the 1-, 2-, and 3-base mismatched sequences, and the negative control samples clarified the high selectivity and better performance of the engineered assay. The values of 96.6-104% and 2.3-3.4% have been obtained for the recoveries and RSDs, respectively. Furthermore, the repeatability and reproducibility of the associated bio-assay have been studied. Consequently, the novel method is appropriate for rapidly and quantitatively detecting H. influenzae, and is considered a better candidate for advanced tests on biological samples such as urine samples.

Abstract
The ever-expanding human societies on the one hand and the diminishing fossil fuel resources on the other have driven man to find a suitable, cheap, clean, and accessible source of energy. Water splitting is a good solution to this crisis. Because of the slow kinetics of water oxidation reaction, it is important to select efficient and durable electrocatalysts to improve the reaction kinetics. In this research, α-MnO2/FeCo-LDH catalysts on nickel foam were developed for water oxidation, which exhibited good catalytic performance and stability in a 0.1 M KOH solution. The electrocatalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal methods and characterized by XRD, FTIR, Raman, SEM, TEM, EDS, and MAP techniques. The proposed modified electrode has large exchange current, low overpotential, and small Tafel slope. Here, only an overpotential of 210 mV is required to achieve a current density of 5 mA cm2 with a Tafel slope of 70.4 mV dec-1 in an alkaline solution.

Abstract
In this work, a novel amino-modified chitosan/tailings composite (CS-PEI-nGT) was successfully synthesized from gold tailings particle treated by ball milling (nGT), chitosan (CS) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) as raw materials, for Lead (Pb(Ⅱ)) and Cadmium (Cd(Ⅱ)) removal from aqueous solutions. The CS-PEI-nGT was characterized by using FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, TGA and XPS techniques. The results showed that CS-PEI-nGT had maximum adsorption capacity of 192.78 mg·g-1 and 99.46 mg·g-1 for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) respectively at pH 5. The adsorption kinetics was described well by pseudo-second-order kinetic adsorption model, and suggested that chemisorption as the rate-controlling step for adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ). The isotherm data was accurately explained by Langmuir model with higher correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9911 and 0.9642 for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) respectively. In addition, CS-PEI-nGT retained its selective adsorption capacity for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ), compared to other metals such as Zn(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ), Mg(Ⅱ) and Al(Ⅲ). The mechanism of the adsorption was investigated and the results revealed that amino (-NH2), silicon oxide groups (Si-O) and hydroxyl (-OH) functional groups on composite surface were accountable for metals adsorption, suggesting surface complexation, electrostatic interactions and ion exchange. Our work presents a promising strategy for tailings recycling and highly efficient removal of toxic metals ions from wastewater.

Abstract
In this work, Ni-Co layered double hydroxide (Ni-Co LDH) hollow nanostructures were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. A screen-printed electrode (SPE) surface was modified with as-fabricated Ni-Co LDHs to achieve a new sensing platform for determination of sumatriptan. The electrochemical behavior of the Ni-Co LDH-modified SPE (Ni-CO LDH/SPE) for sumatriptan determination was investigated using voltammetric methods. Compared with bare SPE, the presence of Ni-Co LDH was effective in the enhancement of electron transport rate between the electrode and analyte, as well as in the significant reduction of the overpotential of sumatriptan oxidation. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was applied to perform a quantitative analysis of sumatriptan. The linearity range was found to be between 0.01 and 435.0 μM. The limits of detection (LOD) and sensitivity were 0.002 ± 0.0001 μM and 0.1017 ± 0.0001 μA/μM, respectively. In addition, the performance of the Ni-CO LDH/SPE for the determination of sumatriptan in the presence of naproxen was studied. Simultaneous analysis of sumatriptan with naproxen showed well-separated peaks leading to a quick and selective analysis of sumatriptan. Furthermore, the practical applicability of the prepared Ni-CO LDH/SPE sensor was examined in pharmaceutical and biological samples with satisfactory recovery results.

Abstract
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are ionic laminar composites composed of positively charged brucite-like layers with an interlayered region containing charged compensating anions and solvation molecules. Such functional LDHs materials present a strong potential for heavy metal treatment especially for wastewater and soil, due to the large surface area and layered structure. This paper started with the background of techniques for heavy metals treatment and then discussed the potential environmental toxic effects, feasibility, stability of LDH composites. The preparation strategies of LDHs composites, and their application were summarized, followed by main mechanisms involving chelation, complexation, surface precipitation, ion exchange. This work also presented the potential environmental toxic effects, feasibility, stability of LDHs composites, reuse of waste liquid and the ratio adjustment of M2+ and N3+ for LDHs synthesis. While most efforts focused on improving the absorption capacity of LDHs by composites construction, ignoring the toxicity effects and detailed mechanism investigation. Based on a thorough review of the latest development, the challenges and perspectives would be proposed, offering promising insights on environmental purification via LDHs based materials.

Abstract
Corrosion is a natural process between a metal and its environment that can gradually cause catastrophic damage to the metal equipment, which would have economic implications. Consequently, several protective methods have been utilized to prevent metals from severe degradation. Organic polymeric coatings have been widely used as the most convenient and cost-effective method to boost metals' anti-corrosion properties. Nonetheless, these coatings have a significant amount of solvent, resulting in shrinkage and micro defects in the films during the curing process. Many studies have verified that transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) can form a "labyrinth effect" in the polymeric coatings due to their "nano-barrier effect". Furthermore, based on their sheet-like structures, they can considerably cover the surface defects of the polymeric films. Therefore, the penetration of corrosive elements can be substantially curbed. It is the first review that specifically focused on the new family of 2D nanomaterials, i.e., MXenes, and discussed their applications in corrosion protection systems. The MXenes' pros and cons in the polymeric matrixes as nanofillers will be clarified. Moreover, the synthesis and functionalization methods of the MXenes, their applications, and corrosion protection mechanism will be explored. Subsequently, the MXenes' superiority over other 2D nanomaterials will be highlighted while their future perspectives and industrial applications will be predicted.

Abstract
Despite the exceptional physicochemical and morphological characteristics, the pristine layered double hydroxides (LDHs), or two-dimensional (2D) hydrotalcite clays, often suffer from various shortcomings in biomedicine, such as deprived thermal and chemical stabilities, acid-prone degradation, as well as lack of targeting ability, hampering their scale-up and subsequent clinical translation. Accordingly, diverse nanocomposites of LDHs have been fabricated by surface coating of organic species, impregnation of inorganic species, and generation of core-shell architectures, resulting in the complex state-of-the-art architectures. In this article, we initially emphasize various bothering limitations and the chemistry of these pristine LDHs, followed by discussions on the engineering strategies of different LDHs-based nanocomposites. Further, we give a detailed note on diverse LDH nanocomposites and their performance efficacy in various biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, tissue engineering and cell patterning, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) extraction, as well as photoluminescence, highlighting the influence of various properties of installed supramolecular assemblies on their performance efficacy. In summary, we conclude with interesting perspectives concerning the lessons learned to date and the strategies to be followed to further advance their scale-up processing and applicability in medicine.

Abstract
Highly stable DUT-52 materials were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and well-characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In order to systematically study the adsorption of dichromate ions in aqueous solution by the DUT-52 materials, a single factor experiment, kinetic experiment, thermodynamic experiment, competition ion experiment, and material regeneration experiment were designed. Based on the H-bond interaction between the dichromate ions and the H atoms of a NDC2- ligand, the DUT-52 materials showed a maximum removal rate of 96.4% and a maximum adsorption capacity of 120.68 mg·g-1 with excellent selective adsorption and material regeneration. In addition, the process of adsorption of dichromate ions by the DUT-52 materials is in accordance with the pseudo second-order kinetics and Langmuir models, and the adsorption mechanism and the important role of the H-bond interaction were reasonably explained using the XPS pattern and theoretical calculation. Accordingly, DUT-52 can be regarded as a multifunctional material for efficiently removing dichromate ions from the wastewater.

Effective Remediation of Arsenic-Contaminated Soils by EK-PRB of Fe/Mn/C-LDH: Performance, Characteristics, and Mechanism. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH AND PUBLIC HEALTH 2022; 19:ijerph19074389. Abstract
Arsenic is highly toxic and carcinogenic. The aim of the present work is to develop a good remediation technique for arsenic-contaminated soils. Here, a novel remediation technique by coupling electrokinetics (EK) with the permeable reactive barriers (PRB) of Fe/Mn/C-LDH composite was applied for the remediation of arsenic-contaminated soils. The influences of electric field strength, PRB position, moisture content and PRB filler type on the removal rate of arsenic from the contaminated soils were studied. The Fe/Mn/C-LDH filler synthesized by using bamboo as a template retained the porous characteristics of the original bamboo, and the mass percentage of Fe and Mn elements was 37.85%. The setting of PRB of Fe/Mn/C-LDH placed in the middle was a feasible option, with the maximum and average soil leaching toxicity removal rates of 95.71% and 88.03%, respectively. When the electric field strength was 2 V/cm, both the arsenic removal rate and economic aspects were optimal. The maximum and average soil leaching toxicity removal rates were similar to 98.40% and 84.49% of 3 V/cm, respectively. Besides, the soil moisture content had negligible effect on the removal of arsenic but slight effect on leaching toxicity. The best leaching toxicity removal rate was achieved when the soil moisture content was 35%, neither higher nor lower moisture content in the range of 25-45% was conducive to the improvement of leaching toxicity removal rate. The results showed that the EK-PRB technique could effectively remove arsenic from the contaminated soils. Characterizations of Fe/Mn/C-LDH indicated that the electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange, and surface functional group complexation were the primary ways to remove arsenic.

Abstract
We developed a computational-based model for simulating adsorption capacity of a novel layered double hydroxide (LDH) and metal organic framework (MOF) nanocomposite in separation of ions including Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. The simulated adsorbent was a composite of UiO-66-(Zr)-(COOH)2 MOF grown onto the surface of functionalized Ni50-Co50-LDH sheets. This novel adsorbent showed high surface area for adsorption capacity, and was chosen to develop the model for study of ions removal using this adsorbent. A number of measured data was collected and used in the simulations via the artificial intelligence technique. Artificial neural network (ANN) technique was used for simulation of the data in which ion type and initial concentration of the ions in the feed was selected as the input variables to the neural network. The neural network was trained using the input data for simulation of the adsorption capacity. Two hidden layers with activation functions in form of linear and non-linear were designed for the construction of artificial neural network. The model's training and validation revealed high accuracy with statistical parameters of R2 equal to 0.99 for the fitting data. The trained ANN modeling showed that increasing the initial content of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions led to a significant increment in the adsorption capacity (Qe) and Cd(II) had higher adsorption due to its strong interaction with the adsorbent surface. The neural model indicated superior predictive capability in simulation of the obtained data for removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from an aqueous solution.

Abstract
The ever-expanding scale of industry and agriculture has led to the gradual increase of pollutants (e.g., heavy metal ions, synthetic dyes, and antibiotics) in water resources, and the ecology and wastewater are grave problems that need to be solved urgently and has attracted widespread attention from the research community and industry in recent years. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a type of organic-inorganic hybrid material with a distinctive 3D network crystal structure. Lately, MOFs have made striking progress in the fields of adsorption, catalytic degradation, and biomedicine on account of their large specific surface and well-developed pore structure. This review summarizes the latest research achievements in the preparation of pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and MOF derivatives for various applications including the removal of heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and other harmful substances in sewage. Furthermore, the working mechanisms of utilizing adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and membrane separation technologies are also briefly described for specific pollutants removal from sewage. It is expected that this review will provide inspiration and references for the synthesis of pristine MOFs as well as their composites and derivatives with excellent water treatment performance.

Abstract
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also known as anionic clays, are lamellar inorganic solids with a brucite-like structure and consist of positively charged metal hydroxide sheets intercalated by anions and water molecules. Choice of LDH is beneficial as it displays properties like simple synthesis procedures, adjustable structure, stability, large surface area, homogeneous positive charge distribution over the surface, interplanar spacing, and versatility to synthesize a variety of composites. Due to these properties LDHs act as efficient adsorbents for wastewater treatment. This review presents a detailed overview of the removal of hazardous organic dyes using different LDHs and LDH-hybrids/composites. The review also incorporates methods of synthesis of various LDHs and composites and the effect of their morphology on dye removal capacity. The effects of adsorption variables such as pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of dye, contact time on the adsorption of these materials are also explained along with adsorption isotherms, kinetics and operative mechanisms. This article incorporates 156 references, majority of which have been taken from the available literature of last 5 years.

Abstract
Rapid industrialization has led to the release of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), a "Class A" human carcinogen, mutagen, and teratogen in biological systems. Current adsorbents like anionic exchange resins and metal-organic frameworks can remove harmful heavy metal oxyanions from water but are not stable in a broad pH range, suffer from selectivity, and cannot capture them from trace values below the tolerance limits given by the U.S. EPA (100 ppb) and WHO (50 ppb). Herein, we have synthesized nature-inspired coral-like three-dimensional hierarchical structures of [Co0.79Al0.21(OH)2(CO3)0.11]·mH2O (CoAl-LDH) that sets a new benchmark for sequestering oxyanions of Cr(VI). CoAl-LDH shows a broad pH working range (1.93-12.22), high selectivity toward saturated water samples containing monovalent (Cl-, F-, Br-, and NO3-) and divalent (SO42-) anions with fast kinetics (reaches equilibrium within a minute), high capacity (93.4 ± 7.8 mg g-1), and high distribution coefficient of 1.09 × 106 mL g-1. Unlike other materials, it can decrease Cr(VI) concentration up to 0.012 ppb. This high selectivity for Cr(VI) is linked to the weak bonding interaction between Cr2O72- and brucite-like layers, as revealed from thermogravimetric and infrared spectroscopy. With these remarkable features coupled with low cost and an environmentally friendly nature, we have also designed an anion exchange column that can remove >99% Cr(VI) with just 1 wt % of CoAl-LDH and 99 wt % of sand and is a prominent candidate for the elimination of Cr(VI) from industrial effluents.

Abstract
Herein, two novel porous polymer matrix nanocomposites were synthesized and used as adsorbents for heavy metal uptake. Methacrylate-modified large mesoporous silica FDU-12 was incorporated in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix through an in-situ polymerization approach. For another, amine-modified FDU-12 was composited with Nylon 6,6 via a facile solution blending protocol. Various characterization techniques including small-angle X-ray scattering, FTIR spectroscopy, field emission-scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, porosimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis have been applied to investigate the physical and chemical properties of the prepared materials. The adsorption of Pb(II) onto the synthesized nanocomposites was studied in a batch system. After study the effect of solution pH, adsorbent amount, contact time, and initial concentration of metal ion on the adsorption process, kinetic studies were also conducted. For both adsorbents, the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models were found to be the best fit to predict isotherm and kinetics of adsorption. Based on the Langmuir model, maximum adsorption capacities of 105.3 and 109.9 mg g-1 were obtained for methacrylate-modified FDU-12/poly(methyl methacrylate) and amine-modified FDU-12/Nylon 6,6, respectively.

Abstract
The study of the physicochemical process of volatile organic compound (VOC) adsorption on porous materials is significant for design and screening of adsorbent materials and treatment of VOCs. Traditional measurement methods for studying the adsorption process require lots of adsorbates and adsorbents and are time-consuming. We proposed a facile strategy to study the adsorption process of trace gaseous aldehydes on layered double hydroxide (LDH) using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). We prepared a composite of Ag nanocubes@hollow Co-Ni LDH (AgNCs@Co-Ni LDH) with a strong adsorption capability and high SERS sensitivity. The adsorption properties of LDH for benzaldehyde in terms of general kinetics and isotherms were investigated. The kinetic adsorption process could be fitted better by the pseudo-first-order kinetics with a higher correlation coefficient than by the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption rate of 0.0308 min-1 was obtained from the fitting curve. The isotherm adsorption fits the Langmuir isotherm model, and its adsorption constant is 6.25 × 106 L/mol. Taking advantage of the excellent adsorptive performance and SERS activity, the AgNCs@Co-Ni LDH composite can be used as an effective SERS probe to detect gaseous aldehydes, and it shows a linear dynamic range (5-100 ppb) with a limit of detection reaching 1.83 ppb for benzaldehyde, better than that achieved by previous studies. Therefore, this work has not only established a new measurement method for probing the adsorption process with extremely low consumption of both adsorbates and adsorbents, but also may lay the groundwork for the construction of rapid and ultra-sensitive SERS sensors for probing VOCs in the future.

Abstract
Hg(II) has been identified to be one of the extremely toxic heavy metals because of its hazardous effects and this fact that it is even more hazardous to animals than other pollutants such as Ag, Au, Cd, Ni, Pb, Co, Cu, and Zn. Accordingly, for the first time, tetrasulfide-functionalized fibrous silica KCC-1 (TS-KCC-1) spheres were synthesized by a facile, conventional ultrasonic-assisted, sol–gel-hydrothermal preparation approach to adsorb Hg(II) from aqueous solution. Tetrasulfide groups (–S–S–S–S–) were chosen as binding sites due to the strong and effective interaction of mercury ions (Hg(II)) with sulfur atoms. Hg(II) uptake onto TS-KCC-1 in a batch system has been carried out. Isotherm and kinetic results showed a very agreed agreement with Langmuir and pseudo-first-order models, respectively, with a Langmuir maximum uptake capacity of 132.55 mg g–1 (volume of the solution = 20.0 mL; adsorbent dose = 5.0 mg; pH = 5.0; temperature: 198 K; contact time = 40 min; shaking speed = 180 rpm). TS-KCC-1was shown to be a promising functional nanoporous material for the uptake of Hg(II) cations from aqueous media. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no report on the uptake of toxic Hg(II) cations by tetrasulfide-functionalized KCC-1 prepared by a conventional ultrasonic-assisted sol–gel-hydrothermal synthesis method.

Abstract
The binary nanocomposites of metal/covalent-organic frameworks (NH2-MIL-125(Ti)@TpPa-1) were constructed by solvothermal method, which was developed as a multifunctional platform with adsorption and photocatalysis for radionuclides removal. The batch experiments and physicochemical property (FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, etc.) corroborated: (i) core-shell NH2-MIL-125(Ti)@TpPa-1 had a more stable, multilayer pore structure and abundant active functional groups; (ii) NH2-MIL-125(Ti)@TpPa-1 had fast a removal rate, as well as a high adsorption capacity of 536.73 mg (UO22+)/g and 593.97 mg (Eu3+)/g; (iii) the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model provided a more reasonable description, indicating the immobilization process was endothermic, spontaneous chemisorption; (iv) the adsorption mechanism was chelation and electrostatic attraction, ascribed to the nitrogen/oxygen-containing functional groups. These results illustrated that NH2-MIL-125(Ti)@TpPa-1 was a prospective adsorbent for the remediation polluted by radionuclides. In addition, the research provided the theoretical basis for further investigation on the UO22+(VI) photoreduction.

Abstract
Multi-functionalized fibrous silica KCC-1 (MF-KCC-1) bearing amine, tetrasulfide, and thiol groups was synthesized via a post-functionalization method and fully characterized by several methods such as FTIR, FESEM, EDX-Mapping, TEM, and N2 adsorption-desorption techniques. Due to abundant surface functional groups, accessible active adsorption sites, high surface area (572 m2 g-1), large pore volume (0.98 cm3 g-1), and unique fibrous structure, mesoporous MF-KCC-1 was used as a potential adsorbent for the uptake of acid fuchsine (AF) and acid orange II (AO) from water. Different adsorption factors such as pH of the dye solution, the amount of adsorbent, initial dye concentration, and contact time, affecting the uptake process were optimized and isotherm and kinetic studies were conducted to find the possible mechanism involved in the process. For both AF and AO dyes, the Langmuir isotherm model and the PFO kinetic model show the most agreement with the experimental data. According to the Langmuir isotherm, the calculated maximum adsorption capacity for AF and AO were found to be 574.5 mg g-1 and 605.9 mg g-1, respectively, surpassing most adsorption capacities reported until now which is indicative of the high potential of mesoporous MF-KCC-1 as an adsorbent for removal applications.
