Ultrahigh electrocatalytic activity with trace amounts of platinum loadings on free-standing mesoporous titanium nitride nanotube arrays for hydrogen evolution reactions

Key Ingredients for the Screening of Single Atom Catalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction: The Case of Titanium Nitride

A computational screening of Single Atom Catalysts (SACs) bound to titanium nitride (TiN) is presented, for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER), based on density functional theory. The role of fundamental ingredients is explored to account for a reliable screening of SACs. Namely, the formation of H2-complexes besides the classical H* one impacts the predicted HER activity, in line with previous studies on other SACs. Also, the results indicate that one needs to adopt self-interaction-corrected functionals. Finally, predicting an active catalyst is of little help without an assessment of its stability. Thus, it is included in the theoretical framework the analysis of the stability of the SACs in working conditions of pH and voltage. Once unconventional intermediates and stability are considered in a self-interaction corrected scheme, the number of potential good catalysts for HER is strongly reduced since i) some potentially good catalysts are not stable against dissolution and ii) the formation of unconventional intermediates leads to thermodynamic barriers. This study highlights the importance of including ingredients for the prediction of new systems, such as the formation of unconventional intermediates, estimating the stability of SACs, and the adoption of self-interaction corrected functionals. Also, this study highlights some interesting candidates deserving of dedicated work.

α-Fe2O3 mediated periodate activation for selective degradation of phenolic compounds via electron transfer pathway under visible irradiation

Periodate (PI)-photoactivated advanced oxidation process (AOP) has recently received increasing attention for the removal of micropollutants from water. However, periodate is mainly driven by high-energy ultraviolet light (UV) in most cases, and few studies have extended it to the visible range. Herein, we proposed a new PI visible light activation system employing α-Fe₂O₃ as catalyst. It is completely different from traditional PI-AOP based on hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and iodine radical (•IO₃). The vis-α-Fe₂O₃/PI system can selectively degrade the phenolic compounds via non-radical pathway under the visible range. Notably, the designed system not only shows a well pH tolerance and environmental stability, but also exhibits a strong substrate-dependent reactivity. Both quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments demonstrate that photogenerated holes are the main active species in this system. Moreover, a series of photoelectrochemical experiments reveal that PI can effectively inhibit the carrier recombination on the α-Fe₂O₃ surface, thereby improving the utilization of photogenerated charges and increasing the number of photogenerated holes, which effectively reacts with 4-CP through electron transfer way. In a word, this work proposes a cost-effective, green and mild mean to activate PI, and provides a facile way to solve the fatal shortcomings (i.e., inappropriate band edge position, rapid charge recombination and short hole diffusion length) of traditional iron oxide semiconductor photocatalysts.

Synergy of Platinum Single Atoms and Platinum Atomic Clusters on Sulfur-Doped Titanium Nitride Nanotubes for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Highly dispersed Pt, such as Pt single atoms and atomic clusters, has great potential in the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to the high atomic efficiency and unique electronic configuration. Rationally regrating the electronic structure of Pt catalysts is desirable for promoting the HER performance. Herein, a 3D self-supported monolithic electrode consisting of Pt single atoms (Pt_SAs ) and Pt atomic clusters (Pt_ACs ) anchored on sulfur-doped titanium nitride nanotubes (S-TiN NTs) encapsulated in polyaniline (PANI) on Ti mesh (PANI@Pt/S-TiN NTs/Ti) via a facile electrochemical strategy for efficient HER is designed and synthesized. Contributed by the unique structure and composition and the synergy of Pt_SAs , Pt_ACs and S-TiN NTs, the PANI@Pt/S-TiN NTs/Ti electrode exhibits ultrahigh HER activities with only 12, 25 and 39 mV overpotentials at -10 mA cm^-2 in acidic, alkaline and neutral media, respectively, and can maintain a stable performance for 25 h. Impressively, the mass activities are respectively up to 26.1, 22.4, and 17.7 times as that of Pt/C/CC electrode. Theoretical calculation results show that the synergistic effect of Pt_SAs , Pt_ACs , and S-TiN NTs can optimize the electronic structure of Pt and generate multiple active sites with a thermodynamically favorable hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG_H* ), thereby resulting in an enhanced HER activity.

Low Platinum-Loaded Molybdenum Co-catalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline and Acidic Media

Developing an efficient catalytic system for electrolysis with reduced platinum (Pt) loading while maintaining performance comparable to bulk platinum metal is important to decrease costs and improve scalability of the hydrogen fuel economy. Here we report the performance of a novel sputter-deposited molybdenum (Mo) thin film with an extremely low co-loading of Pt, where Pt atoms were dispersed on Mo (Pt_d-Mo) as an electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in either alkaline or acidic media. The Pt_d-Mo electrocatalyst presents similar catalytic activity to bulk Pt in alkaline media, while the performance is only slightly decreased in acidic media. Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) results confirm that the Pt_d-Mo electrocatalyst produced hydrogen at a rate comparable with that of a pristine Pt sample at the same potential. A comparison with Pt-loaded degenerately doped p-type doped silicon (Pt_d-Si) suggests that Mo and Pt work synergistically to boost the performance of Pt_d-Mo catalysts. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) before and after 1000 cycles of continuous operation confirm the significant durability of the Pt_d-Mo performance. Overall, the Pt_d-Mo electrocatalyst, with comparable HER activity to bulk Pt despite an ultra-low Pt loading, could be a strong candidate for hydrogen production in either acidic or basic conditions.

Rational Regulation of Crystalline/Amorphous Microprisms-Nanochannels Based on Molecular Sieve (VSB-5) for Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting

Rational regulation of the composition and structure of electrocatalysts is crucial to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a new electrocatalyst of nickel phosphate microprism (VSB/NiPO) is developed via a simple solvothermal reaction. The microprism is mainly composed of Versailles-Santa Barbara-5 (VSB-5, molecular sieve) with unique nanochannels, which contribute to accelerating mass transfer and exposing more active sites, thus displaying excellent HER activity. Subsequently, the crystallinity and electronic structure of the framework are modulated by incorporating Fe with the combination of calcination and impregnation. The nanochannels are converted to the amorphous arrangement, and the Ni centers are regulated to the higher valence. The resultant Fe-VSB/NiPO-500 exhibits a low OER overpotential of 227 mV at 50 mA cm^-2 . Interestingly, an integrated electrolyzer assembled by VSB/NiPO(-) and Fe-VSB/NiPO-500(+) performs well for overall water splitting, which requires only 1.487 V to achieve 10 mA cm^-2 , and remains stable at 100 mA cm^-2 over 100 h. This finding opens a new avenue for developing VSB-5 in the field of electrocatalysis.

Facile access to high-efficiency degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride with structural optimization of TiN

As a broad-spectrum antibiotic, tetracycline has become a potential ecological hazard. Herein, titanium nitride (TiN), with an advantageous structure, was synthesized by simple heating rate regulation and constructed for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) degradation under light irradiation. All the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2-adsorption/desorption isotherm, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectometry (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results showed that the as-prepared TiN-x catalysts exhibited obviously enhanced photocatalytic property toward TC-HCl degradation compared with the commercial pure phase TiN (p-TiN). According to the results of photocatalytic degradation, TiN synthesized at 6 °C/min heating rate had the best removal rate of TC-HCl (90%) after dark reaction for 10 min and photo-degradation for 90 min. In addition, the trapping experiments have demonstrated that the photogenerated holes (h+) and superoxide radical ([Formula: see text]) are the main oxidation products of the present system. Strikingly, the reuse experiments showed high stability of TiN.

The fabrication of a flexible electrode with trace Rh based on polypyrrole for the hydrogen evolution reaction

A multi-potential step method is proposed for constructing flexible PPy/Rh film electrodes. The obtained PPy/Rh films exhibit excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic performance and can be used as flexible electrodes that maintain their initial catalytic performance after bending. Characterization shows that the active sites of the catalyst are due to electron transfer between Rh and PPy.

PtMn/PtCo alloy nanofascicles: robust electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction under both acidic and alkaline conditions

Herein, PtMn and PtCo nanofascicles were prepared by ultrathin nanofibers using a versatile method, and can be employed as effective electrocatalysts toward the HER under both acidic and alkaline conditions.
