Abstract
Eco-friendly and cost-effective catalysts with multiple active sites, large surface area, high stability and catalytic activity are highly desired for efficient water splitting as a sustainable green energy source. Within this line, a facile synthetic approach based on solventless thermolysis was employed for the simple and tunable synthesis of Ni1-xMgxFe2O4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) nanosheets. The characterization of nanosheets (via p-XRD, EDX, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and SAED) revealed that the pristine ferrites (NiFe2O4 and MgFe2O4), and their solid solutions maintain the same cubic symmetry throughout the composition regulation. Elucidation of the electrochemical performance of the nanoferrite solid solutions showed that by tuning the local chemical environment of Ni in NiFe2O4 via Mg substitution, the intrinsic catalytic activity was enhanced. Evidently, the optimized Ni0.4Mg0.6Fe2O4 catalyst showed drastically enhanced HER activity with a much lower overpotential of 121 mV compared to the pristine NiFe2O4 catalyst. Moreover, Ni0.2Mg0.8Fe2O4 catalyst exhibited the best OER performance with a low overpotential of 284 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH. This enhanced electrocatalytic activity could be due to improved electronic conductivity caused by the partial substitution of Ni2+ by Mg2+ in the NiFe2O4 matrix as well as the synergistic effect in the Mg-substituted NiFe2O4. Our results suggest a feasible route for developing earth-abundant metal oxide-based electrocatalysts for future water electrolysis applications.

Abstract
The nitrite reduction reaction (NO2-RR) is an important process for eliminating toxic nitrites from water while simultaneously producing high-value ammonia under ambient conditions. For the aim to improve the NO2-RR efficiency, we designed a new synthetic strategy to prepare a phosphorus-doped three-dimensional NiFe2O4 catalyst loaded onto a nickel foam in-situ and evaluated its performance for the reduction of NO2- to NH3. The catalyst achieved a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 95.39%, and an ammonia (NH3) yield rate of 34788.51 µg h-1 cm-2 at - 0.45 V vs. RHE. A high NH3 yield rate and FE were maintained after 16 cycles at - 0.35 V vs. RHE in an alkaline electrolyte. This study provides a new direction for the rational design of highly stable electrocatalysts for the conversion of NO2- to NH3.

Abstract
Pt-based nanoclusters toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remain the most promising electrocatalysts. However, the sluggish alkaline Volmer-step kinetics and the high-cost have hampered progress in developing high-performance HER catalysts. Herein, we propose to construct sub-nanometer NiO to tune the d-orbital electronic structure of nanocluster-level Pt for breaking the Volmer-step limitation and reducing the Pt-loading. Theoretical simulations firstly suggest that electron transfer from NiO to Pt nanoclusters could downshift the Ed-band of Pt and result in the well-optimized adsorption/desorption strength of the hydrogen intermediate (H*), therefore accelerating the hydrogen generation rate. NiO and Pt nanoclusters confined into the inherent pores of N-doped carbon derived from ZIF-8 (Pt/NiO/NPC) were designed to realize the structure of computational prediction and boost the alkaline hydrogen evolution. The optimal 1.5%Pt/NiO/NPC exhibited an excellent HER performance and stability with a low Tafel slope (only 22.5 mv dec-1) and an overpotential of 25.2 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Importantly, the 1.5%Pt/NiO/NPC possesses a mass activity of 17.37 A mg-1 at the overpotential of 20 mV, over 54 times higher than the benchmark 20 wt% Pt/C. Furthermore, DFT calculations illustrate that the Volmer-step could be accelerated owing to the high OH- attraction of NiO nanoclusters, leading to the Pt nanoclusters exhibiting a balance of H* adsorption and desorption (ΔGH* = -0.082 eV). Our findings provide new insights into breaking the water dissociation limit of Pt-based catalysts by coupling with a metal oxide.

Abstract
Electrocatalytic water splitting is a promising and viable technology to produce clean, sustainable, and storable hydrogen as an energy carrier. However, to meet the ever-increasing global energy demand, it is imperative to develop high-performance non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as the OER is considered the bottleneck for electrocatalytic water splitting. Spinels, in particular, are considered promising OER electrocatalysts due to their unique properties, precise structures, and compositions. Herein, the recent progress on the application of bimetallic-based spinels (AFe2 O4 , ACo2 O4 , and AMn2 O4 ; where A = Ni, Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn) as electrocatalysts for the OER is presented. The fundamental concepts of the OER are highlighted after which the family of spinels, their general formula, and classifications are introduced. This is followed by an overview of the various classifications of bimetallic-based spinels and their recent developments and applications as OER electrocatalysts, with special emphasis on enhancing strategies that have been formulated to improve the OER performance of these spinels. In conclusion, this review summarizes all studies mentioned therein and provides the challenges and future perspectives for bimetallic-based spinel OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract
Photo-modulated magnetism has become an emerging method for technological applications, such as magneto-optical devices. In this work, by introducing oxygen during rapid thermal annealing, NiFe/NiFe2O4 core/shell nanoparticles were successfully fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. Obvious photo-modulated ferromagnetism was observed in core/shell nanoparticles confined in Al2O3 film. Theoretical and experimental investigations indicate much more photogenerated electrons are captured at the interface of NiFe/NiFe2O4 compared with NiFe nanoparticles due to interfacial effect, resulting in the improved ferromagnetism under light irradiation. This work provides a promising strategy for optical engineering design of optical information storage, high-speed wireless communication, and magneto-optical semiconductor devices.

Abstract
Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an important half-reaction involved in many electrochemical applications, such as water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. However, the sluggish kinetics of its four-electron transfer process becomes a bottleneck to the performance enhancement. Thus, rational design of electrocatalysts for OER based on thorough understanding of mechanisms and structure-activity relationship is of vital significance. This review begins with the introduction of OER mechanisms which include conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism and lattice-oxygen-mediated mechanism. The reaction pathways and related intermediates are discussed in detail, and several descriptors which greatly assist in catalyst screen and optimization are summarized. Some important parameters suggested as measurement criteria for OER are also mentioned and discussed. Then, recent developments and breakthroughs in experimental achievements on transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts are reviewed to reveal the novel design principles. Finally, some perspectives and future directions are proposed for further catalytic performance enhancement and deeper understanding of catalyst design. It is believed that iterative improvements based on the understanding of mechanisms and fundamental design principles are essential to realize the applications of efficient transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts for electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies.

Abstract
Developing a bifunctional water splitting catalyst with high efficiency and low cost are crucial in the electrolysis water industry. Here, we report a rational design and simple preparation method of MoS2 -based bifunctional electrocatalyst on carbon cloth (CC). The optimized P-doped MoS2 @CoP/CC catalyst presents low overpotentials for the hydrogen (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) of 64 and 282 mV in alkaline solution as well as 72 mV HER overpotential in H2 SO4 at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 . Furthermore, P-MoS2 @CoP/CC as a bifunctional catalyst delivered relatively low cell voltages of 1.83 and 1.97 V at high current densities of 500 and mA cm-2 in 30 % KOH. The two-electrode system showed a remarkable stability for 30 h, even outperformed the benchmark RuO2 ||Pt/C catalyst. The excellent electrochemical performance can be credited to the unique microstructure, high surface area, and the synergy between metal species. This study presents a possible alternative for noble metal-based catalysts to overcome the challenges of industrial applications.

Abstract
Electrocatalytic oxidation of water (i.e., oxygen evolution reaction, OER) plays crucial roles in energy, environment, and biomedicine. It is a key factor affecting the efficiencies of electrocatalytic reactions conducted in aqueous solution, e.g., electrocatalytic water splitting and glucose oxidation reaction (GOR). However, electrocatalytic OER still suffers from problems like high overpotential, sluggish kinetics, and over-reliance on expensive noble-metal-based catalysts. Herein, 15 nm thick carbon-based shell coated tungsten oxide (CTO) nanospheres are loaded on nickel foam to form CTO/NF. An enhanced electrocatalytic OER is triggered on CTO/NF, with the overpotential at 50 mA cm-2 (317 mV) and the Tafel slope (70 mV dec-1) on CTO/NF lower than those on pure tungsten oxide (360 mV, 117 mV dec-1) and noble-metal-based IrO2 catalysts (328 mV, 96 mV dec-1). A promoted electrocatalytic GOR is also achieved on CTO/NF, with efficiency as high as 189 μA mM-1 cm-2. The carbon-based shell on CTO is flexible for electron transfer between catalyst and reactants and provides catalytically active sites. This improves reactant adsorption and O-H bond dissociation on the catalyst, which are key steps in OER and GOR. The carbon-based shell on CTO retains the catalyst as nanospheres with a higher surface area, which facilitates OER and GOR. It is the multiple roles of the carbon-based shell that increases the electrocatalytic efficiency. These results are helpful for fabricating more efficient noble-metal-free electrocatalysts.

Abstract
The charge transfer is a key issue in the development of efficient photoelectrodes. Here, we report a method using F-doping and dual-layer ultrathin amorphous FeOOH/CoOOH cocatalysts coupling to enable the inactive α-Fe2O3 photoanode to become highly vibrant for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Fluorine doping is revealed to increase the charge density and improve the conductivity of α-Fe2O3 for rapid charge transfer. Furthermore, ultrathin FeOOH was deposited on F-Fe2O3 to extract photogenerated holes and passivate the surface states for accelerated charge carrier transfer. Moreover, CoOOH as an excellent cocatalyst was coated onto FeOOH/F-Fe2O3 with the photoassisted electrodeposition method remarkably expediting OER kinetics through an optional pathway of holes utilized by Co species. Ultimately, the CoOOH/FeOOH/F-Fe2O3 photoanode exhibits a satisfactory photocurrent density (3.3-fold higher than pristine α-Fe2O3) and a negatively shifted onset potential of 80 mV. This work showcases an appealing maneuver to activate the water oxidation performance of the α-Fe2O3 photoanode by an integration strategy of heteroatom doping and cocatalyst coupling.

Abstract
Developing efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts with unique nanostructures is of great significance for improved electrocatalytic reactions, including the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted recent attention because of their unique dimension-related properties, such as ultrathin thickness, large specific surface area, and abundant accessible active sites that can act as good precursors for the derivation of a variety of nanocomposites as active materials in electrocatalysis and energy-related devices. In this review, we present recent developments in 2D MOF-derived nanomaterials for hydrogen and oxygen reactions in overall water-splitting and rechargeable Zn-air batteries. The advantages of various synthetic strategies are summarized and discussed in detail. Finally, we discuss the main challenges and future perspectives of the development of 2D MOF-derived electrocatalysts.

CNT-supported Ni–Fe bimetallic oxide hollow nanoparticles with an ultra-small size based on Kirkendall effect are fabricated and this catalyst exhibits excellent OER performances and robust stability, superior to the benchmark IrO2 catalyst.
