Improvement in Cohesive Properties of Adhesion Systems Using Movable Cross-Linked Materials with Stress Relaxation Properties

A strong, tough, and stable adhesion system used in various environments must be developed. A long-lasting adhesion system should effectively perform in the following five aspects: adhesion strength, toughness, energy dissipation property, self-restoration property, and creep resistance property. However, these properties are difficult to balance using conventional adhesives. Here, a new topological adhesion system using single-movable cross-network (SC) materials [SC(DMAAm) Adh] was designed. 3-(Trimethoxysilyl) propyl acrylate was used as the anchor, N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMAAm) was used as the main chain monomer, and γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) units acted as movable cross-links. The movable cross-links provided SC(DMAAm) Adh with energy dissipation properties, thereby improving its toughness. The γ-CD units also acted as bulky stoppers that provided a high adhesion strength and self-restoration properties. Moreover, the combination of the movable cross-links and bulky stoppers provided creep resistance to SC(DMAAm) Adh. The performance of the adhesion systems under different mobilities of the polymer chains was examined by adjusting the water content. In proper water-containing states, all mechanical properties of SC(DMAAm) Adh were better than those of the adhesion systems using homopolymers [P(DMAAm) Adh] and polymers with covalent cross-linking points [CP(DMAAm) Adh].

Parameter Determination of the 2S2P1D Model and Havriliak-Negami Model Based on the Genetic Algorithm and Levenberg-Marquardt Optimization Algorithm

This study utilizes the genetic algorithm (GA) and Levenberg-Marquardt (L-M) algorithm to optimize the parameter acquisition process for two commonly used viscoelastic models: 2S2P1D and Havriliak-Negami (H-N). The effects of the various combinations of the optimization algorithms on the accuracy of the parameter acquisition in these two constitutive equations are investigated. Furthermore, the applicability of the GA among different viscoelastic constitutive models is analyzed and summarized. The results indicate that the GA can ensure a correlation coefficient of 0.99 between the fitting result and the experimental data of the 2S2P1D model parameters, and it is further proved that the fitting accuracy can be achieved through the secondary optimization via the L-M algorithm. Since the H-N model involves fractional power functions, high-precision fitting by directly fitting the parameters to experimental data is challenging. This study proposes an improved semi-analytical method that first fits the Cole-Cole curve of the H-N model, followed by optimizing the parameters of the H-N model using the GA. The correlation coefficient of the fitting result can be improved to over 0.98. This study also reveals a close relationship between the optimization of the H-N model and the discreteness and overlap of experimental data, which may be attributed to the inclusion of fractional power functions in the H-N model.

Self-Healing, Reconfigurable, Thermal-Switching, Transformative Electronics for Health Monitoring

Soft, deformable electronic devices provide the means to monitor physiological information and health conditions for disease diagnostics. However, their practical utility is limited due to the lack of intrinsical thermal switching for mechanically transformative adaptability and self-healing capability against mechanical damages. Here, the design concepts, materials and physics, manufacturing approaches, and application opportunities of self-healing, reconfigurable, thermal-switching device platforms based on hyperbranched polymers and biphasic liquid metal are reported. The former provides excellent self-healing performance and unique tunable stiffness and adhesion regulated by temperature for the on-skin switch, whereas the latter results in liquid metal circuits with extreme stretchability (>900%) and high conductivity (3.40 × 104  S cm-1 ), as well as simple recycling capability. Triggered by the increased temperature from the skin surface, a multifunctional device platform can conveniently conform and strongly adhere to the hierarchically textured skin surface for non-invasive, continuous, comfortable health monitoring. Additionally, the self-healing and adhesive characteristics allow multiple multifunctional circuit components to assemble and completely wrap on 3D curvilinear surfaces. Together, the design, manufacturing, and proof-of-concept demonstration of the self-healing, transformative, and self-assembled electronics open up new opportunities for robust soft deformable devices, smart robotics, prosthetics, and Internet-of-Things, and human-machine interfaces on irregular surfaces.

Effect of Counterions on the Physicomechanical Properties of Copper-Nitrogen-Coordinated Metallosupramolecular Elastomers

Metallosupramolecular elastomers have attracted much attention due to their excellent mechanical properties, flexible tailoring of performance, and responsiveness to photo and thermal stimuli. The physicomechanical properties of metallosupramolecular elastomers are highly dependent on metal salts and ligand units; however, the role of counterions lacks practical exploration. To this end, we synthesized a simple acrylate copolymer model and introduced copper salts with different counterions to construct dynamic copper-nitrogen coordination cross-linked networks. This approach generated a series of elastomers with a tensile strength of over 10 MPa and a laser self-healing efficiency of over 90% within 2 min. In particular, we studied the effects of counterions on the thermodynamic, viscoelastic, mechanical, photothermal, and self-healing properties of the materials. Therefore, this work can provide instruction for the preparation and performance tailoring of metallosupramolecular elastomers.

Bionic Polyurethane with a Reversible Core-Sheath for Real-Time On-Demand Performance Adjustment and Fluorescence Self-Reflection

Smart materials that can respond to external stimuli have attracted considerable scientific interest and achieved fruitful results with the advancement of research. However, materials with adjustable performance and which could be intervened on-demand through stimulation are still rarely mentioned. Furthermore, most of these materials published so far usually require high temperature or the assistance of catalysts to change the structure and adjust their performance, and the process is always irreversible. Herein, we proposed an anthracene-functionalized novel polyurethane with adjustable performance and fluorescence self-reflection inspired by shellfish. Anthracene was used as a dynamic group to make the polymer chain structure topologically isomerize after UV exposure, finally constructing a reversible core-sheath in a homogeneous polymer. Moreover, this process is catalyst-free and has strong spatiotemporal controllability. The appearance of the reversible core-sheath structure could achieve the performance adjustment of materials, and the strength can be increased easily in real time and on-demand by UV light exposure. Through selective irradiation, spatial control stiffening of this material can also be realized. In addition, the performance can also be self-reflected through the fluorescence to realize the performance that is visualizable. This work dramatically simplifies the requirements and conditions for material performance adjustment while expanding the versatility and applications in intelligent materials such as artificial muscles, variably flexible electronic devices, heterogeneous materials, 4D printing, and what may be discovered in the future.
