A highly responsive methanol sensor based on graphene oxide/polyindole composites

Sensing of volatile pollutants on reduced graphene oxide-polypyrrole composite: DFT investigation

Air pollutants generated from volatile toxic chemicals pose significant public health concerns. Density functional theory (DFT) computations were used in this research to explore the efficiency and mechanism of harmful gas sensing over the reduced graphene oxide-polypyrrole (rGO-PPy) composite. Volatile molecule sensing was investigated for the NH3, H2CO, CH3OH, and C2H5OH gas molecules over three PPy orientations on the rGO substrate. Results showed that PPy orientation over rGO plays a crucial role in the sensing efficiency of the investigated gas molecules. The rGO-PPy composite, with PPy in a vertical orientation, demonstrated higher stability and enhanced sensing than other orientations. The results indicate that the strong hydrogen bonding of NH3 and CH3OH with both PPy and rGO significantly enhanced the sensing of these gas molecules on rGO by influencing the charge transfer with adsorption energy values of - 0.84 and - 0.92 eV, respectively. The lack of a direct hydrogen bonding with rGO and the weak hydrogen bonding with PPy caused a weak adsorption of H2CO and C2H5OH over rGO as indicated by the adsorption energy values of - 0.60 and - 0.78 eV, respectively. Selectivity analysis for the NH3 and C2H5OH gas molecules showed that NH3 can maintain hydrogen bonding with PPy in the presence of C2H5OH while C2H5OH cannot sustain this interaction. This study highlights the importance of the structural and electronic properties of the rGO-PPy composite in volatile pollutant sensing, providing insights for designing high-performance gas sensors.

Bismuth ferrite based acetone gas sensor: evaluation of graphene oxide loading

We report a BiFeO3/graphene oxide (BFO/GO) perovskite, synthesized using a CTAB-functionalized glycine combustion route, as a potential material for acetone gas sensing applications. The physicochemical properties of the developed perovskite were analysed using XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, HRTEM, EDAX and XPS. The gas sensing performance was analysed for various test gases, including ethanol, acetone, propanol, ammonia, nitric acid, hydrogen sulphide and trimethylamine at a concentration of 500 ppm. Among the test gases, the developed BFO showed the best selectivity towards acetone, with a response of 61% at an operating temperature of 250 °C. All the GO-loaded BFO samples showed an improved gas sensing performance compared with pristine BFO in terms of sensitivity, the response/recovery times, the transient response curves and the stability. The 1 wt% GO-loaded BiFeO3 sensor showed the highest sensitivity of 89% towards acetone (500 ppm) at an operating temperature of 250 °C. These results show that the developed perovskites have significant potential for use in acetone gas sensing applications.

The State of the Art on Graphene-Based Sensors for Human Health Monitoring through Breath Biomarkers

The field of organic-borne biomarkers has been gaining relevance due to its suitability for diagnosing pathologies and health conditions in a rapid, accurate, non-invasive, painless and low-cost way. Due to the lack of analytical techniques with features capable of analysing such a complex matrix as the human breath, the academic community has focused on developing electronic noses based on arrays of gas sensors. These sensors are assembled considering the excitability, sensitivity and sensing capacities of a specific nanocomposite, graphene. In this way, graphene-based sensors can be employed for a vast range of applications that vary from environmental to medical applications. This review work aims to gather the most relevant published papers under the scope of "Graphene sensors" and "Biomarkers" in order to assess the state of the art in the field of graphene sensors for the purposes of biomarker identification. During the bibliographic search, a total of six pathologies were identified as the focus of the work. They were lung cancer, gastric cancer, chronic kidney diseases, respiratory diseases that involve inflammatory processes of the airways, like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sleep apnoea and diabetes. The achieved results, current development of the sensing sensors, and main limitations or challenges of the field of graphene sensors are discussed throughout the paper, as well as the features of the experiments addressed.

Graphene Oxide/Styrene-Butadiene Latex Hybrid Aerogel with Improved Mechanical Properties by PEI Grafted GO and CNT

Graphene oxide aerogel (GOA) has wide application prospects due to its low density and high porosity. However, the poor mechanical properties and unstable structure of GOA have limited its practical applications. In this study, polyethyleneimide (PEI) was used to graft onto the surface of GO and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to improve compatibility with polymers. Composite GOA was prepared by adding styrene-butadiene latex (SBL) to the modified GO and CNTs. The synergistic effect of PEI and SBL, resulted in an aerogel with excellent mechanical properties, compressive resistance, and structural stability. When the ratio of SBL to GO and GO to CNTs was 2:1 and 7:3, respectively, the obtained aerogel performance was the best, and the maximum compressive stress was 784.35% higher than that of GOA. The graft of PEI on the surface of GO and CNT could improve the mechanical properties of the aerogel, with greater improvements observed with grafting onto the surface of GO. Compared with GO/CNT/SBL aerogel without PEI grafting, the maximum stress of GO/CNT-PEI/SBL aerogel increased by 5.57%, that of GO-PEI/CNT/SBL aerogel increased by 20.25%, and that of GO-PEI/CNT-PEI/SBL aerogel increased by 28.99%. This work not only provided a possibility for the practical application of aerogel, but also steered the research of GOA in a new direction.

A conductometric enzymatic methanol sensor based on polystyrene - PAMAM dendritic polymer electrospun nanofibers

Methanol (MeOH) is a solvent and cleaning agent used in industry, but it is poisonous when ingested. The recommended release threshold for MeOH vapor is 200 ppm. We present a novel sensitive micro-conductometric MeOH biosensor created by grafting alcohol oxidase (AOX) onto electrospun polystyrene-poly(amidoamine) dendritic polymer blend nanofibers (PS-PAMAM-ESNFs) on interdigitated electrodes (IDEs). The analytical performance of the MeOH microsensor was evaluated using gaseous MeOH, ethanol, and acetone samples collected from the headspace above aqueous solution with known concentration. The sensor's response time (t_Res) fluctuates from 13 s to 35 s from lower to higher concentrations. The conductometric sensor has a sensitivity of 150.53 μS.cm-1 (v/v) for MeOH and a detection limit of 100 ppm in the gas phase. The MeOH sensor is 7.3 times less sensitive to ethanol and 136.8 times less sensitive to acetone. The sensor was verified for detecting MeOH in commercial rubbing alcohol samples.

Operando monitoring of a room temperature nanocomposite methanol sensor

The sensing of volatile organic compounds by composites containing metal oxide semiconductors is typically explained via adsorption-desorption and surface electrochemical reactions changing the sensor's resistance. The analysis of molecular processes on chemiresistive gas sensors is often based on indirect evidence, whereas in situ or operando studies monitoring the gas/surface interactions enable a direct insight. Here we report a cross-disciplinary approach employing spectroscopy of working sensors to investigate room temperature methanol detection, contrasting well-characterized nanocomposite (TiO2@rGO-NC) and reduced-graphene oxide (rGO) sensors. Methanol interactions with the sensors were examined by (quasi) operando-DRIFTS and in situ-ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, the first paralleled by simultaneous measurements of resistance. The sensing mechanism was also studied by mass spectroscopy (MS), revealing the surface electrochemical reactions. The operando and in situ spectroscopy techniques demonstrated that the sensing mechanism on the nanocomposite relies on the combined effect of methanol reversible physisorption and irreversible chemisorption, sensor modification over time, and electron/O2 depletion-restoration due to a surface electrochemical reaction forming CO2 and H2O.

Graphene Oxide Thin Films for Detection and Quantification of Industrially Relevant Alcohols and Acetic Acid

Industrial environments are frequently composed of potentially toxic and hazardous compounds. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the most concerning categories of analytes commonly existent in the indoor air of factories' facilities. The sources of VOCs in the industrial context are abundant and a vast range of human health conditions and pathologies are known to be caused by both short- and long-term exposures. Hence, accurate and rapid detection, identification, and quantification of VOCs in industrial environments are mandatory issues. This work demonstrates that graphene oxide (GO) thin films can be used to distinguish acetic acid, ethanol, isopropanol, and methanol, major analytes for the field of industrial air quality, using the electronic nose concept based on impedance spectra measurements. The data were treated by principal component analysis. The sensor consists of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and GO layer-by-layer films deposited on ceramic supports coated with gold interdigitated electrodes. The electrical characterization of this sensor in the presence of the VOCs allows the identification of acetic acid in the concentration range from 24 to 120 ppm, and of ethanol, isopropanol, and methanol in a concentration range from 18 to 90 ppm, respectively. Moreover, the results allows the quantification of acetic acid, ethanol, and isopropanol concentrations with sensitivity values of (3.03±0.12)∗104, (-1.15±0.19)∗104, and (-1.1±0.50)∗104 mL^-1, respectively. The resolution of this sensor to detect the different analytes is lower than 0.04 ppm, which means it is an interesting sensor for use as an electronic nose for the detection of VOCs.

Polyindole-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots-Based Electrochemical Sensor for Dopamine Detection

The sensitive monitoring of dopamine levels in the human body is of utmost importance since its abnormal levels can cause a variety of medical and behavioral problems. In this regard, we report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) from polyindole (PIN) via a facile single-step hydrothermal synthetic strategy that can act as an efficient electrochemical catalyst for the detection of dopamine (DA). The average diameter of N-GQDs was ∼5.2 nm and showed a C/N atomic ratio of ∼2.75%. These N-GQDs exhibit a cyan fluorescence color under irradiation from a 365 nm lamp, while PIN has no characteristic PL. The presence of richly N-doped graphitic lattices in the N-GQDs possibly accounts for the improved catalytic activity of N-GQDs/GCE towards electrocatalytic DA detection. Under optimum conditions, this novel N-GQDs-modified electrode exhibits superior selectivity and sensitivity. Moreover, it could detect as low as 0.15 nM of DA with a linear range of 0.001-1000 µM. In addition, the outstanding sensing attributes of the detector were extended to the real samples as well. Overall, our findings evidence that N-GQDs-based DA electrochemical sensors can be synthesized from PIN precursor and could act as promising EC sensors in medical diagnostic applications.

Tuning the sensing responses towards room-temperature hypersensitive methanol gas sensor using exfoliated graphene-enhanced ZnO quantum dot nanostructures

A suitable and non-invasive methanol sensor workable in ambient temperature conditions with a high response has gained wide interest to prevent detrimental consequences for industrial workers from its low-level intoxication. In this work, we present a tunable and highly responsive ppb-level methanol gas sensor device working at room temperature via a bottom-up synthetic approach using exfoliated graphene sheet (EGs) and ZnO quantum dots (QDs) on an aluminum anodic oxide (AAO) template. It is verified that EGs-supported AAO with a vertical electrode configuration enabled high and fast-responsive methanol sensing. Moreover, the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of the high surface area EGs and ZnO QDs with a 3.37 eV bandgap efficiently absorbing UV light led to 56 times high response due to the enhanced polarization on the sensor surface compared to non-UV-radiated EGs/AAO at 800 ppb of methanol. The optimal resonance frequency of methanol is determined to be 100 kHz, which could detect methanol with high response of 2.65% at 100 ppm. The limit of detection (LOD) concentration is obtained at 2 ppb level. This study demonstrates the potential of UV-assisted ZnO, EGs, and AAO-based capacitance sensor material for rapidly detecting hazardous gaseous light organic molecules at ambient conditions, and the overall approach can be easily expanded to a novel non-invasive monitoring strategy for light and hazardous volatile organic exposures.

High Photoluminescence Polyindole/CuInS Quantum Dots for Pb Ions Sensor

Polyindole is considered an excellent conducting polymer with interested properties for different applications. A novel polyindole (PIn)/CuInS (CIS)/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) nanocomposite was synthesized via in situ polymerization of PIn in presence of CIS/ZnS QDs. By investigating the effect of CIS/ZnS QDs on optical properties of PIn, it was found that the optical band gaps of PIn, CIS/ZnS QDs, and PIn/CIS/ZnS QDs nanocomposite were 3.24 eV, 4.68 eV and 3.44 eV, respectively. From the luminance spectra, it was observed that emission peaks of PIn at 442 and 468 nm are independent of the excitation wavelength with the highest intensity at excitation wavelength of 380 nm. However, the luminance spectrum of PIn/CIS/ZnS QDs nanocomposite exhibited a quenching peak for CIS/ZnS QDs while the intensity of PIn peak was enhanced. High resolution of transmission electron microscope image of CIS/ZnS QDs revealed nanocrystals with a size of 3–4.5 nm and lattice space of 0.2 nm. PIn/CIS/ZnS QDs nanocomposite as the fluorescent probe was employed for sensing different concentrations of Pb2+ from 5 to 50 ppb. The reaction between PIn/CIS/ZnS QDs and Pb2+ was slightly quenched and fixed after 90 min. The emission peak was reduced gradually with increasing concentration of lead via photo-induced electron transfer or ion exchange mechanism. The value of correlation coefficient (R2) was 0.99, the sensitivity was 0.0041 ppb−1 and limit of detection value was 4.48 ppb.

Facile Synthesis of Polyindole/Ni1-x Zn x Fe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1) Nanocomposites and Their Enhanced Microwave Absorption and Shielding Properties

The present work reports the fabrication of polyindole (PIN)/Ni_1-x Zn _x Fe₂O₄ (x = 0, 0.5, 1) nanocomposites as efficient electromagnetic wave absorbers by a facile in situ emulsion polymerization method for the first time. The samples were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The resulting polyindole/Ni_1-x Zn _x Fe₂O₄ (x = 0, 0.5, 1) nanocomposites offer better synergism among the Ni_1-x Zn _x Fe₂O₄ nanoparticles and PIN matrix, which significantly improved impedance matching. The best impedance matching of Ni_1-x Zn _x Fe₂O₄/polyindole (x = 0, 0.5, 1) nanocomposites was sought out, and the minimum reflection loss of the composites can reach up to -33 dB. The magnetic behavior, complex permittivity, permeability, and microwave absorption properties of polyindole/Ni_1-x Zn _x Fe₂O₄ (x = 0, 0.5, 1) nanocomposites have also been studied. The microwave absorbing characteristics of these composites were investigated in the 8-12 GHz range (X band) and explained based on eddy current, natural and exchange resonance, and dielectric relaxation processes. These results provided a new idea to upgrade the performance of conventional microwave-absorbing materials based on polyindole in the future.

Flexible Impedimetric Electronic Nose for High-Accurate Determination of Individual Volatile Organic Compounds by Tuning the Graphene Sensitive Properties

We investigated functionalized graphene materials to create highly sensitive sensors for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, methanol, ethanol, acetone, and isopropanol. First, we prepared VOC-sensitive films consisting of mechanically exfoliated graphene (eG) and chemical graphene oxide (GO), which have different concentrations of structural defects. We deposited the films on silver interdigitated electrodes on Kapton substrate and submitted them to thermal treatment. Next, we measured the sensitive properties of the resulting sensors towards specific VOCs by impedance spectroscopy. We obtained the eG- and GO-based electronic nose composed of two eG films- and four GO film-based sensors with variable sensitivity to individual VOCs. The smallest relative change in impedance was 5% for the sensor based on eG film annealed at 180 °C toward 10 ppm formaldehyde, whereas the highest relative change was 257% for the sensor based on two-layers deposited GO film annealed at 200 °C toward 80 ppm ethanol. At 10 ppm VOC, the GO film-based sensors were sensitive enough to distinguish between individual VOCs, which implied excellent selectivity, as confirmed by Principle Component Analysis (PCA). According to a PCA-Support Vector Machine-based signal processing method, the electronic nose provided identification accuracy of 100% for individual VOCs. The proposed electronic nose can be used to detect multiple VOCs selectively because each sensor is sensitive to VOCs and has significant cross-selectivity to others.

Graphene oxide nanocomposites based room temperature gas sensors: A review

Over the last few decades, various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been widely used in the processing of building materials and this practice adversely affected the environment i.e. both indoor and outdoor air quality. A cost-effective solution for detecting a wide range of VOCs by sensing approaches includes chemiresistive, optical and electrochemical techniques. Room temperature (RT) chemiresistive gas sensors are next-generation technologies desirable for self-powered or battery-powered instruments utilized in monitoring emissions that are associated with indoor/outdoor air pollution and industrial processes. In this review, a state-of-the-art overview of chemiresistive gas sensors is provided based on their attractive analytical characteristics such as high sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, rapid assay time and low fabrication cost. The review mainly discusses the recent advancement and advantages of graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites-based chemiresistive gas sensors and various factors affecting their sensing performance at RT. Besides, the sensing mechanisms of GO nanocomposites-based chemiresistive gas sensors derived using metals, transition metal oxides (TMOs) and polymers were discussed. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of GO nanocomposites-based RT chemiresistive gas sensors are addressed.

Ultrafast Detection and Discrimination of Methanol Gas Using a Polyindole-Embedded Substrate Integrated Waveguide Microwave Sensor

The fast and sensitive detection of methanol gas using cost-effective sensors in the industry is a significant issue to be addressed. Herein, a polyindole (PIn)-deposited substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) has been introduced to perform quantitative and qualitative methanol gas sensing with quick response and recovery time at room temperature. First, PIn is synthesized and deposited in the microwell etched at the intensified electric field region of the microwave-based cavity resonator, which gives a sensing response through variation of PIn's high-frequency conductivity and dielectric property caused by the adsorption and desorption of methanol gas. Second, an enhanced filling factor and high Q factor have been attained using the proposed microwell etched SIW structure, which exhibits high sensitivity in terms of frequency shift (3.33 kHz/ppm), amplitude shift (0.005 dB/ppm), bandwidth broadening (3.66 kHz/ppm), and loaded Q factor (10.60 Q value/ppm). Third, the gas measurement results reveal excellent long-term stability with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.02% for 7 days, excellent repeatability with an RSD of 0.004%, and desired response and recovery time of 95 and 120 s, respectively. The results indicate that the proposed microwave sensor has great potential to achieve high sensitivity and fast response toward methanol gas molecules at room temperature.
