A strategy towards the synthesis of superhydrophobic/superoleophilic non-fluorinated polypyrrole nanotubes for oil-water separation

Bio-Inspired Textiles for Self-Driven Oil-Water Separation-A Simulative Analysis of Fluid Transport

In addition to water repellency, superhydrophobic leaves of plants such as Salvinia molesta adsorb oil and separate it from water surfaces. This phenomenon has been the inspiration for a new method of oil-water separation, the bionic oil adsorber (BOA). In this paper, we show how the biological effect can be abstracted and transferred to technical textiles, in this case knitted spacer textiles hydrophobized with a layered silicate, oriented at the biology push approach. Subsequently, the transport of the oil within the bio-inspired textile is analyzed by a three-dimensional fluid simulation. This fluid simulation shows that the textile can be optimized by reducing the pile yarn length, increasing the pile yarn spacing, and increasing the pile yarn diameter. For the first time, it has been possible with this simulation to optimize the bio-inspired textile with regard to oil transport with little effort and thus enable the successful implementation of a self-driven and sustainable oil removal method.

Self-supported polypyrrole flexible electrodes for electrochemical reduction of nitrite

The efficiency of an electrochemical oxidation/reduction process strongly depends on the working electrode's surface area to volume ratio. By making electrodes flexible and employing different configurations such as roll-to-roll membrane, the surface area to volume ratio can be enhanced, therefore improving the overall efficiency of electrochemical processes. Conductive polymers emerge as a new framework to enable alternative electrochemical water treatment cell configurations. Self-standing polypyrrole flexible electrodes were synthesized by electropolymerization and evaluated on the treatment of an oxyanion pollutant: nitrite. Mechanical characterization through stress-strain curves and bending tests demonstrated high electrode resilience that sustained over 1000 bending cycles without impacting mechanical integrity or electrocatalytic responses. The electrocatalytic response towards nitrite reduction was assessed under linear scan voltammetry (LSV) and removal performance evaluated under potentiostatic conditions reaching 79% abatement of initial concentrations of nitrite of 15 mg/L [NO2--N]. Self-standing flexible electrodes appear as a novel framework to enable modular compact water treatment unit designs that maximize the electrode area/volume ratio and substitute expensive platinum group metal (PGMs) electrocatalysts.

Facile ultrasonic preparation of a polypyrrole membrane as an absorbent for efficient oil-water separation and as an antimicrobial agent

Polypyrrole (PPY) spherical particles synthesized using carbon dots as an efficient catalyst were strongly embedded on fluorinated nonwoven fabric by ultrasonication to form a membrane with high hydrophilicity. An optimal amount of PPY adhered to the membrane after 30 min of sonication enhanced the overall membrane area with high hydrophilicity. Oil with high hydrophobicity was repelled by the resulting membrane, whereas water was freely penetrated and diffused from the membrane. The membrane exhibited good reusability and efficiency for the recovery of oil from a cooking oil-water mixture within 30 s. The incorporation of PPY in the fluorinated fabric imparts significant antibacterial properties against two common pathogens, Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive). The anti-biofouling membrane could pave the way for its potential application to separate spilled oil from contaminated waters, comprising different microorganisms and living species. The novelty of this manuscript is described in a new system, the fabrication of PPY membranes with two important properties: biocidal and oil/water separation.
