Lanthanide MOFs for inducing molecular chirality of achiral stilbazolium with strong circularly polarized luminescence and efficient energy transfer for color tuning

A green approach to encapsulate proteins and enzymes within crystalline lanthanide-based Tb and Gd MOFs

In this work, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and Aspergillus sp. laccase (LC) were encapsulated in situ within two lanthanide-based MOFs (TbBTC and GdBTC) through a green one-pot synthesis (almost neutral aqueous solution, T = 25 °C, and atmospheric pressure) in about 1 h. Pristine MOFs and protein-encapsulated MOFs were characterized through wide angle X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopies. The location of immobilized BSA molecules, used as a model protein, was investigated through small angle X-ray scattering. BSA occurs both on the inner and on the outer surface of the MOFs. LC@TbBTC, and LC@GdBTC samples were also characterized in terms of specific activity, kinetic parameters, and storage stability both in water and acetate buffer. The specific activity of LC@TbBTC was almost twice that of LC@GdBTC (10.8 μmol min-1 mg-1vs. 6.6 μmol min-1 mg-1). Both biocatalysts showed similar storage stabilities retaining ∼60% of their initial activity after 7 days and ∼20% after 21 days. LC@TbBTC dispersed in acetate buffer exhibited a higher storage stability than LC@GdBTC. Additionally, terbium-based MOFs showed interesting luminescent properties. Together, these findings suggest that TbBTC and GdBTC are promising supports for the in situ immobilization of proteins and enzymes.

"Matching Rule" for Generation, Modulation and Amplification of Circularly Polarized Luminescence

ConspectusCircularly polarized luminescence (CPL) generated by chiral luminescent systems has sparked enormous attention in multidisciplinary field as it brings infinite potential for applications, such as 3D optical displays, biological probes, and chiroptical sensors. Satisfying both the conditions of chirality and luminescence (including fluorescence or phosphorescence) is a prerequisite for constructing CPL materials. In this regard, whether in organic, inorganic, or hybrid systems, chiral and luminescent components generally involve effective coupling through covalent or noncovalent bonds. For covalent interactions, such as the copolymerization of chiral and luminescent monomers, although covalent bonds provide high stability for the system, they inevitably involve tedious preparation procedures that connect chirality and luminescence together. For noncovalent bonds, take supramolecular assembly as an example, chiral elements and achiral light-emitting units are chiral transferred through intermolecular interactions, and their advantages include the diversity of luminescent and chiral building blocks, the stimuli responsiveness brought by noncovalent bonds, as well as the potential amplification of CPL signals by coassembly. However, the stability of the assembly system may be poor, and the assembly chiroptical performance and morphology are difficult to predict. Gratifyingly, matching rule that do not rely on covalent together with noncovalent interactions allows for the effortless construction, modulation, as well as amplification of CPL systems.In this Account, we overview different strategies based on matching rule, including fluorescence-selective absorption, circularly polarized reflection, and circularly polarized fluorescence energy transfer (CPF-ET). Examples of these strategies are illustrated with a focus on helical polymers in light of their appealing structures and wide uses. For instance, for fluorescence-selective absorption, chiral helical polymers can convert racemic fluorescence light into a circularly polarized one with specific handedness by simply overlapping the helical polymer's circular dichroism (CD) spectra with the luminophore's emission spectra. For circularly polarized reflection, employing the selective reflection of certain handedness's circularly polarized light, the high helical twisting power (HTP) of the helical polymer in the cholesteric liquid crystals (N*-LCs) gives the system high glum. Additionally, for CPF-ET, only the emission spectrum of the donor and the absorption (or excitation) spectrum of the achiral acceptor are required to overlap, and no covalent or noncovalent interactions between the two are required. An outlook for the CPL materials related to matching rule which will avail the optimization and extension of this intriguing approach concludes the Account. We hope that the Account will offer insightful inspiration for the flourishing progress of chiroptical systems and present exciting opportunities.

Metal Clusters Confined in Chiral Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework for Circularly Polarized-Luminescence Inks

Chiroptical activities arising in nanoclusters (NCs) are emerging as one of the most dynamic areas of modern science. However, devising an overarching strategy that is capable of concurrently enhancing the photoluminescence (PL) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of metal NCs remains a formidable challenge. Herein, gold and silver nanoclusters (AuNCs, AgNCs) are endowed with CPL, for the first time, through a universal host-guest approach─centered around perturbing a chiral microenvironment within chiral hosts, simultaneously enhancing emissions. Remarkably, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of AuNCs has undergone an increase of over 200 times upon confinement, escalating from 0.05% to 12%, and demonstrates a CPL response. Moreover, a three-dimensional (3D) model termed "NCs@CMOF" featuring CPL activity is created using metal cluster-based assembly inks through the process of 3D printing. This work introduces a potentially straightforward and versatile approach for achieving both PL enhancement and CPL activities in metal clusters.

Expanding the Transuranic Metal-Organic Framework Portfolio: The Optical Properties of Americium(III) MOF-76

Reported is the synthesis, crystal structure, and solid-state characterization of a new americium containing metal-organic framework (MOF), [Am(C9H3O6)(H2O)], MOF-76(Am). This material is constructed from Am3+ metal centers and 1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (BTC) ligands, forming a porous three-dimensional framework that is isostructural with several known trivalent lanthanide (Ln) analogs (e.g., Ce, Nd, and Sm-Lu). The Am3+ ions have seven coordinates and assume a distorted, capped trigonal prismatic geometry with C1 symmetry. The Am3+-O bonds were studied via infrared spectroscopy and compared to several MOF-76(Ln) analogs, where Ln = Nd3+, Eu3+, Tb3+, and Ho3+. The results show that the strength of the ligand carboxylate stretching and bending modes increase with Nd3+ < Eu3+ < Am3+ < Tb3+ < Ho3+, suggesting the metal-oxygen bonds are predominantly ionic. Optical absorbance spectroscopy measurements reveal strong f-f transitions; some exhibit pronounced crystal field splitting. The photoluminescence spectrum contains weak Am3+-based emission that is achieved through direct and indirect metal center excitation. The weak emissive behavior is somewhat surprising given that ligand-to-metal resonance energy transfer is efficient in the isoelectronic Eu3+ (4f6) and related Tb3+ (4f8) analogs. The optical properties were explored further within a series of heterometallic MOF-76(Tb1-xAmx) (x = 0.8, 0.2, and 0.1) samples, and the results reveal enhanced Am3+ photoluminescence.

Chiral Materials: Progress, Applications, and Prospects

Chirality is a universal phenomenon in molecular and biological systems, denoting an asymmetric configurational property where an object cannot be superimposed onto its mirror image by any kind of translation or rotation, which is ubiquitous on the scale from neutrinos to spiral galaxies. Chirality plays a very important role in the life system. Many biological molecules in the life body show chirality, such as the "codebook" of the earth's biological diversity-DNA, nucleic acid, etc. Intriguingly, living organisms hierarchically consist of homochiral building blocks, for example, l-amino acids and d-sugars with unknown reason. When molecules with chirality interact with these chiral factors, only one conformation favors the positive development of life, that is, the chiral host environment can only selectively interact with chiral molecules of one of the conformations. The differences in chiral interactions are often manifested by chiral recognition, mutual matching, and interactions with chiral molecules, which means that the stereoselectivity of chiral molecules can produce changes in pharmacodynamics and pathology. Here, the latest investigations are summarized including the construction and applications of chiral materials based on natural small molecules as chiral source, natural biomacromolecules as chiral sources, and the material synthesized by design as a chiral source.

Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheets Boosting Red Long Afterglow via Highly Efficient Energy Transfer

Room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) based long-afterglow materials have shown broad application prospects in smart sensors, biological imaging, photodynamic therapy, and many others. However, the fabrication of red long-afterglow materials still faces a great challenge due to the competitive relationship between RTP efficiency and lifetime. In this work, we reported a series of layered double hydroxide (LDHs) nanosheets with red long-afterglow (quantum yield up to 42.35% and lifetime up to 256.77 ms) by taking advantage of the highly efficient triplet-triplet energy transfer from green phosphorescent LDHs to the red fluorescent dye rhodamine B (RhB, as a guest molecule). Specifically, the Zn-based LDHs@RhB composite (Zn-Al-LDH-4-CBBA@RhB) presents energy transfer efficiency as high as 95.18%, and the red long-afterglow could even be excited upon white-light irradiation. Benefiting from the time-resolved afterglow, the LDHs@RhB composites exhibit great potential in the fields of anticounterfeiting and information encryption.

Chiral metal-organic frameworks for photonics

Recently, there has been significant interest in the use of chiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs) for photonics applications. The promise of these materials lies in the ability to tune their properties through judicious selection of the metal and ligand components. Additionally, the interaction of guest species with the host framework can be exploited to realise new functionalities. In this review, we outline the methods for synthesising chiral MOFs and CPs, then analyse the recent innovations in their use for various optical and photonics applications. We focus on two emerging directions in the field of MOF chemistry - circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) and chiroptical switching - as well as the latest developments in the use of these materials for second-order nonlinear optics (NLO), particularly second-harmonic generation (SHG). The current challenges encountered so far, their possible solutions, and key directions for further research are also outlined. Overall, given the results demonstrated to date, chiral MOFs and CPs show great promise for use in future technologies such as optical communication and computing, optical displays, and all-optical devices.

Highly Boosting Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Chiral Metal-Imidazolate Frameworks

To develop a simple and general method for improving the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) performances of materials is of great significance. In this work, two pairs of CPL-active homochiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) P/M-Et and P/M-Et(Cd) with eta topology are reported. In comparison to the reported isomorphic Zn-imidazolate MOFs P-Me and M-Me, both luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum ) and photoluminescence quantum yields (Φ_PL ) of P-Et and M-Et are largely improved by simply changing the methyl group to an ethyl group of ligands in P-Et and M-Et. Furthermore, the |g_lum | values are significantly amplified up to 0.015 from 0.0057 by introducing the non-luminescent halogenated aromatics, while an enhanced fluorescence efficiency is observed simultaneously (from 27.2% to 47.3%). The figure of merit value is about 40 times larger than that of P-Me and M-Me. Similarly, the CPL performances of P/M-Et(Cd) are improved by about five times after encapsulating fluorobenzene molecules. This work represents a new and simple method for developing CPL-active MOF materials.

Chiroptical Activity of An Achiral Emissive Eu Metal-Organic Framework

Chiroptical activity of achiral crystals is theoretically allowed but very unusual. There is a particularly scarcity of empirical studies on optically active achiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein we report an achiral emissive Eu MOF and its chiroptical properties both in the ground and excited states. The framework crystallizes in an achiral space group (Pna2₁ ) belonging to the polar point group (mm2), where the asymmetric arrangement of racemic trinuclear Eu-oxo clusters is responsible for the optical activity. A pair of circular dichroisms (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) peaks with opposite signs were observed for single crystals. Importantly, the luminescence dissymmetry factor can reach up to 1.1×10^-3 , which is comparable in magnitude to the value of most of the chiral-linker-bridged MOFs. This work gives the first example of achiral MOFs with CPL response and should be instructive for the discovery of more CPL emitters from racemic MOF family.

Highly efficient Förster resonance energy transfer between an emissive tetraphenylethylene-based metal-organic cage and the encapsulated dye guest

The host-guest strategy presents an ideal way to achieve efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) by forcing close proximity between an energy donor and acceptor. Herein, by encapsulating the negatively charged acceptor dyes eosin Y (EY) or sulforhodamine 101 (SR101) in the cationic tetraphenylethene-based emissive cage-like host donor Zn-1, host-guest complexes were formed that exhibit highly efficient FRET. The energy transfer efficiency of Zn-1⊃EY reached 82.4%. To better verify the occurrence of the FRET process and make full use of the harvested energy, Zn-1⊃EY was successfully used as a photochemical catalyst for the dehalogenation of α-bromoacetophenone. Furthermore, the emission color of the host-guest system Zn-1⊃SR101 could be adjusted to exhibit bright white-light emission with the CIE coordinates (0.32, 0.33). This work details a promising approach to enhance the efficiency of the FRET process by the creation of a host-guest system between the cage-like host and dye acceptor, thus serving as a versatile platform for mimicking natural light-harvesting systems.

A Hydrophilic Mixed Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework Monitoring H2O in D2O

Lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) luminescent sensors monitoring the H₂O content in D₂O are still rare. We designed and built a hydrophilic mixed Ln-MOF (Eu_0.4Tb_0.6-MOF) monitoring the H₂O content in D₂O. By designing a ligand and controlling the synthesis method, we achieved a balance between the structural stability and sensing capacity. When the H₂O content ranges from 0 to 100%, the photoluminescence color of Eu_0.4Tb_0.6-MOF can change from yellow to green, which can be observed by the naked eye. The mechanism is that the photoluminescence intensity of Eu³⁺ decreases faster than that of Tb³⁺ when the H₂O content increases. The sensing mechanism was studied further by transient fluorescence spectrometry.

Recognition in the Domain of Molecular Chirality: From Noncovalent Interactions to Separation of Enantiomers

It is not a coincidence that both chirality and noncovalent interactions are ubiquitous in nature and synthetic molecular systems. Noncovalent interactivity between chiral molecules underlies enantioselective recognition as a fundamental phenomenon regulating life and human activities. Thus, noncovalent interactions represent the narrative thread of a fascinating story which goes across several disciplines of medical, chemical, physical, biological, and other natural sciences. This review has been conceived with the awareness that a modern attitude toward molecular chirality and its consequences needs to be founded on multidisciplinary approaches to disclose the molecular basis of essential enantioselective phenomena in the domain of chemical, physical, and life sciences. With the primary aim of discussing this topic in an integrated way, a comprehensive pool of rational and systematic multidisciplinary information is provided, which concerns the fundamentals of chirality, a description of noncovalent interactions, and their implications in enantioselective processes occurring in different contexts. A specific focus is devoted to enantioselection in chromatography and electromigration techniques because of their unique feature as "multistep" processes. A second motivation for writing this review is to make a clear statement about the state of the art, the tools we have at our disposal, and what is still missing to fully understand the mechanisms underlying enantioselective recognition.

Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Inorganic Chiral Photonic Crystals Doped with Quantum Dots

Chiral semiconductor nanostructures have received enormous attention due to their emerging circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. However, compared with well-studied photoluminescence (PL), the reported CPL is much weaker and more challenging to be modulated. Herein, we describe a new approach for acquiring the intense and tunable CPL from inorganic chiral photonic crystals (CPCs) doped with semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). Unprecedentedly, the sign, position and intensity of CPL peaks can be precisely controlled by manipulating either the photonic band gap of CPCs or luminescence wavelength of QDs and a giant absolute dissymmetry factor |g_lum | up to 0.25 is obtained. More importantly, the origin of the CPL modulation is clearly elucidated by both experiment and theory. This work lays the foundation for the construction of next-generation high-performance CPL-based devices.

Family of Nanoclusters, Ln33 (Ln = Sm/Eu) and Gd32, Exhibiting Magnetocaloric Effects and Fluorescence Sensing for MnO4. Inorg Chem 2022;61:8861-8869. [PMID: 35653200 DOI: 10.1021/acs.inorgchem.2c00898]

A family of nanoclusters, [Ln₃₃(EDTA)₁₂(OAc)₂(CO₃)₄(μ₃-OH)₃₆(μ₅-OH)₄(H₂O)₃₈]·OAc·xH₂O (x ≈ 50, Ln = Sm for 1; x ≈ 70, Ln = Eu for 2) and [Gd₃₂(EDTA)₁₂(OAc)₂(C₂O₄)(CO₃)₂(μ₃-OH)₃₆(μ₅-OH)₄(H₂O)₃₆]·x(H₂O) (x ≈ 70 for 3; H₄EDTA = ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid), was prepared through the assembly of repeating subunits under the action of an anion template. The analysis of the structures showed that compounds 1 and 2 containing 33 Ln³⁺ ions were isostructural, which were constructed by three kinds of subunits in the presence of CO₃^2- as an anion template, while compound 3 had a slightly different structure. Compound 3 containing 32 Gd³⁺ ions was formed by three types of subunits in the presence of CO₃^2- and C₂O₄^2- as a mixed anion template. The CO₃^2- anions came from the slow fixation of CO₂ in the air. Meanwhile, one kind of high-nuclearity lanthanide clusters showed high chemical stability. The quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculation suggested that weak antiferromagnetic interactions were dominant between Gd³⁺ ions in 3. Magnetocaloric studies showed that compound 3 had a large entropy change of 43.0 J kg^-1 K^-1 at 2 K and 7 T. Surprisingly, compound 2 showed excellent recognition and detection effects for permanganate in aqueous solvents based on the fluorescence quenching phenomenon.

Helically Chiral Hybrid Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Framework Exhibiting Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Three achiral polycyclic aromatic fluorophores─namely, 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid, 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid, and perylene-3,9-dicarboxylic acid─were chosen based on their desired properties before being incorporated into the construction of a K⁺-carrying gamma-cyclodextrin (γ-CD)-based metal-organic framework (CD-MOF-1) and γ-CD-containing hybrid frameworks (CD-HFs). Among these fluorophores, only the pyrene-carrying one shows significant noncovalent bonding interactions with γ-CD in solution. This fluorophore is encapsulated in a CD-HF with a trigonal superstructure instead of the common cubic CD-MOF-1 found in the case of the other two fluorophores. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the trigonal CD-HF reveals a π-stacked chiral positioning of the pyrene-carrying fluorophore inside the (γ-CD)₂ tunnels and held uniformly around an enantiomorphous 3₂ screw axis along the c direction in the solid-state structure. This helix-like structure demonstrates an additional level of chirality over and above the point-chiral stereogenic centers of γ-CD and the axial chirality associated with the self-assembled π-stacked fluorophores. These arrangements result in specifically generated photophysical and chiroptical properties, such as the controlled emergence of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emission. In this manner, a complete understanding of the mechanism of chirality transfer from a chiral host (CD-HF) to an encapsulated achiral fluorophore has been achieved, an attribute which is often missing in the development of materials with CPL.

Energy Transfer in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Fluorescence Sensing

The development of materials with outstanding performance for sensitive and selective detection of multiple analytes is essential for the development of human health and society. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) have controllable surface and pore sizes and excellent optical properties. Therefore, a variety of LMOF-based sensors with diverse detection functions can be easily designed and applied. Furthermore, the introduction of energy transfer (ET) into LMOFs (ET-LMOFs) could provide a richer design concept and a much more sensitive and accurate sensing performance. In this review, we focus on the recent five years of advances in ET-LMOF-based sensing materials, with an emphasis on photochemical and photophysical mechanisms. We discuss in detail possible energy transfer processes within a MOF structure or between MOFs and guest materials. Finally, the possible sensing applications of the ET-LMOF-based sensors are highlighted.

Multiple Responsive CPL Switches in an Enantiomeric Pair of Perovskite Confined in Lanthanide MOFs

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) switches have attracted widespread attention due to their potential applications in advanced information technologies. However, the design and fabrication of solid-state multiple-responsive CPL switches remain challenging. Here, through self-assembly of chiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and perovskite nanocrystals (NCs), a pair of crystalline enantiomeric (P)-(+)/(M)-(-)-EuMOF⊃MAPbX₃ (MA = CH₃ NH₃ ⁺ , X = Cl^- , Br^- , I^- ) adducts is prepared, where the achiral MAPbBr₃ perovskite NCs embedded into chiral MOFs inherit the chirality of host MOFs by host-guest EuBr and PbO coordination bonds, which is demonstrated by synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The chiral adducts show enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), good thermal stability of CPL in air, and photoswitchable CPL properties upon altering different UV irradiation. Based on two chiral emission centers and their different characteristics, reversible CPL switches are realized upon a diversity of external stimuli, for example, chemicals (water /CH₃ NH₃ Br solution) or temperatures (room temperature/high temperature). Benefiting from the extraordinary stimuli-responsive and highly reversible switchable CPL, multiple information encryptions and decryptions integrated with CPL, together with a chiroptical logic gate are successfully designed. This work opens a new avenue to generally fabricate solid-state CPL composite materials and develops new applications based on switchable CPL.

Circularly polarized luminescent porous crystalline nanomaterials

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials have attracted exclusive attention because of their wide potential applications in low-power-consumption displays, encrypted information storage, chiroptical sensors, and so on. However, there is always a trade-off between the luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) and luminescence quantum yield, which are two critical parameters. Therefore, developing materials with both large g_lum values and high luminescence efficiency is a key issue for constructing high-efficiency CPL materials. To date, chiral porous crystalline nanomaterials (PCNMs) including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous organic-cages (POCs), metal-organic cages (MOCs), and supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs), have shown excellent potential for solving this problem and achieving functional CPL-active materials. In this review, we will summarize several approaches for fabricating CPL-active PCNMs, such as direct synthesis, chirality induction, and symmetry breaking. Furthermore, with flexibly tunable structures and comprehensive host-guest chemistry, modulation and amplification of CPL can be achieved in these PCNMs. We would like to provide insight and perspective that PCNMs can act as an efficient platform in the CPL research field.

Electronic Circular Dichroism Imaging (ECDi) Casts a New Light on the Origin of Solid-State Chiroptical Properties

Solid-state ECD (ss-ECD) spectra of a model microcrystalline solid, finasteride, dispersed into a KCl pellet were recorded by using the synchrotron radiation source at the Diamond B23 beamline. Scanning a surface of 36 mm² with a step of 0.5 mm, we measured a set of ECD imaging (ECDi) spectra very different from each other and from the ss-ECD recorded with a bench-top instrument (1 cm² area). This is due to the anisotropic part of the ECD (ACD), which averages to zero in solution or on a large number of randomly oriented crystallites, but can otherwise be extremely large. Two-way singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis, through experimental and simulated TDDFT spectra, disclosed that the measured and theoretical principal components are in line with each other. This finding demonstrates that the observed isotropic ss-ECD spectrum is governed by the anisotropy of locally oriented crystals. It also introduces a new quality for ss-ECD measurements and opens a new future for probing and mapping chiral materials in the solid state such as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

Recent advances in luminescent metal-organic frameworks and their photonic applications

In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been attracting ever more interest owing to their fascinating structures and widespread applications. Among the optoelectronic materials, luminescent MOFs (LMOFs) have become one of the most attractive candidates in the fields of optics and photonics thanks to the unique characteristics of their frameworks. Luminescence from MOFs can originate from either the frameworks, mainly including organic linkers and metal ions, or the encapsulated guests, such as dyes, perovskites, and carbon dots. Here, we systematically review the recent progress in LMOFs, with an emphasis on the relationships between their structures and emission behaviour. On this basis, we comprehensively discuss the research progress and applications of multicolour emission from homogeneous and heterogeneous structures, host-guest hybrid lasers, and pure MOF lasers based on optically excited LMOFs in the field of micro/nanophotonics. We also highlight recent developments in other types of luminescence, such as electroluminescence and chemiluminescence, from LMOFs. Future perspectives and challenges for LMOFs are provided to give an outlook of this emerging field. We anticipate that this article will promote the development of MOF-based functional materials with desired performance towards robust optoelectronic applications.

Oriented Assembly of 2D Metal-Pyridylporphyrinic Framework Films for Giant Nonlinear Optical Limiting

The development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties is of pronounced significance for optical devices. Herein, a series of 2D MOFs ZnTPyP(M) (TPyP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin, M = Cu, Ni, Mn, H₂) films with [010]-orientation growth composed of ultrathin nanosheets from a pyridylporphyrinic ligand are first obtained by using a liquid-phase epitaxial (LPE) layer-by-layer (lbl) growth approach. ZnTPyP(M) films show a giant nonlinear optical limiting (OL) response and can be modulated by tuning the type of metalloporphyrinic ligands. As a result, ZnTPyP(Cu) film exhibits the highest nonlinear absorption coefficient of 5.7 × 10^-6 m/W compared to other reported NLO materials. Density functional theory calculations were consistent with the experimental results, revealing that the tunable π-π* local excitation and the increased delocalization of the metalloporphyrinic group regulate the NLO performance of ZnTPyP(M) films. These findings provide new insight into the effect of 2D porphyrinic MOFs toward the NLO response and offer new film candidates for nonlinear OL application.

Laterally Engineering Lanthanide-MOFs Epitaxial Heterostructures for Spatially Resolved Planar 2D Photonic Barcoding

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) heterostructures with domain-controlled emissive colors have shown great potential for achieving high-throughput sensing, anti-counterfeit and information security. Here, a strategy based on steric-hindrance effect is proposed to construct lateral lanthanide-MOFs (Ln-MOFs) epitaxial heterostructures, where the channel-directed guest molecules are introduced to rebalance in-plane and out-of-plane growth rates of the Ln-MOFs microrods and eventually generate lateral MOF epitaxial heterostructures with controllable aspect ratios. A library of lateral Ln-MOFs heterostructures are acquired through a stepwise epitaxial growth procedure, from which rational modulation of each domain with specific lanthanide doping species allows for definition of photonic barcodes in a two-dimensional (2D) domain with remarkably enlarged encoding capacity. The results provide molecular-level insight into the use of modulators in governing crystallite morphology for spatially assembling multifunctional heterostructures.

Stacked Reticular Frame Boosted Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks

Chiral covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are intriguing as advanced chiroptical materials but have not been reported to date. We constructed chiroptical COF materials with CPL activity through the convenient Knoevenagel condensation of formyl-functionalized axially chiral linkers and C3-symmetric 1,3,5-benzenetriacetonitrile. Remarkably, the as-prepared chiral COFs showed high absorption and luminescent dissymmetric factors up to 0.02 (g_abs ) and 0.04 (g_lum ), respectively. In contrast, the branched chiral polymers from the same starting monomers were CPL silent. Structural and spectral characterization revealed that the reticular frame was indispensable for CPL generation via confined chirality transfer. Moreover, reticular stacking boosted the CPL performance significantly due to the interlayer restriction of frame. This work demonstrates the first example of a CPL-active COF and provides insight into CPL generation through covalent reticular chemistry, which will play a constructive role in the future design of high-performance CPL materials.

Lanthanide upconversion and downshifting luminescence for biomolecules detection

Biomolecules play critical roles in biological activities and are closely related to various disease conditions. The reliable, selective and sensitive detection of biomolecules holds much promise for specific and rapid biosensing. In recent years, luminescent lanthanide probes have been widely used for monitoring the activity of biomolecules owing to their long luminescence lifetimes and line-like emission which allow time-resolved and ratiometric analyses. In this review article, we concentrate on recent advances in the detection of biomolecule activities based on lanthanide luminescent systems, including upconversion luminescent nanoparticles, lanthanide-metal organic frameworks, and lanthanide organic complexes. We also introduce the latest remarkable accomplishments of lanthanide probes in the design principles and sensing mechanisms, as well as the forthcoming challenges and perspectives for practical achievements.

Chiral Induction in Buckminsterfullerene Using a Metal-Organic Framework

Chiral induction is an emerging topic of interest in various areas of chemistry because of its relationship to the elusive mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking in nature. Buckminsterfullerene (C₆₀ ) with the shape of a highly symmetric truncated icosahedron has rarely been referred for chiral induction due to the difficult symmetry breaking. In this work, we demonstrate that a chiral metal-organic framework (MOF) can provide a key field for chiral induction. C₆₀ could be incorporated into the chiral nanochannels of the MOF using an in situ self-assembly strategy. The circular dichroism spectra of the resulting nanocomposites showed an intense chiral signal in the absorption region of C₆₀ . Experimental and theoretical studies showed that this unprecedented chiral induction of C₆₀ was attributed to hybridization of the molecular orbitals through a close association with the pore surface of the MOF. Our method can endow highly symmetric achiral compounds with chirality, paving the new way toward fabrication of novel chiral nanomaterials.

Multi-Light-Responsive Upconversion-and-Downshifting-Based Circularly Polarized Luminescent Switches in Chiral Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted tremendous attention for several novel applications. However, functional MOFs with light-responsive circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are not examined in detail. Therefore, a dual CPL switch exhibiting both upconversion (UC) and downshifting (DS) CPL in the solid state is constructed by loading a luminescent diarylethene derivative (DAEC) and UC nanoparticles (UCNPs) into chiral MOFs. The chiral MOF⊃DAEC composites exhibit both photoswitchable luminescence and DS-CPL properties under alternating UV and visible light irradiation. Additionally, a reversible UC-CPL switch is realized using near-infrared (NIR) and visible light irradiation by introducing energy-level-matched UCNPs and DAEC into the chiral MOFs. The dissymmetry factor (g_lum ) of UC-CPL is noted to be significantly amplified through energy transfer compared to that of DS-CPL, which indicates that the information on circular polarization can be manipulated by altering the incident light. A chiroptical logic circuit with a 2D information output is designed with UV, visible, and NIR light as inputs by setting a rational threshold.

High Loading of Air-Sensitive Guest Molecules into Polycrystalline Metal-Organic Framework Hosts

Loading air-sensitive guest molecules inside polycrystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) hosts is currently a challenging process. In this study, the air-sensitive guest molecule magnesocene (MgCp₂) was loaded into two porous MOF hosts, polycrystalline Ni-MOF-74 and NH₂-MIL-101(Al), using a gas-phase infiltration process. X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray mapping measurements demonstrated that MgCp₂ was successfully loaded inside the three-dimensional pores of NH₂-MIL-101(Al) with a maximum loading of 43.1 wt %. MgCp₂ was found to cover the outside of Ni-MOF-74 owing to the small one-dimensional channels.

Polymer Ligand-Sensitized Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks for an On-Site Analysis of a Radionuclide

Herein, a new strategy to increase the sensitivity of a lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) to UO₂²⁺ was proposed by using polymeric ligands. By utilizing [Tb(1,3,5-benzenetrisbenzoate)]n (Tb-TBT) MOF as the host, preloaded 2-vinyl terephthalic acid (VTP) was polymerized in situ, which produced a novel fluorescent composite denoted as PVTP⊂Tb-TBT. Benefiting from the coordination of PVTP to the Tb nodes, the polymeric chains performed both as molecular scaffolds that improved the water stability of the framework and as additional antennae that sensitized the photoluminescence of the Tb nodes. More importantly, the detection sensitivity and selectivity of PVTP⊂Tb-TBT to UO₂²⁺ were much improved compared to those of Tb-TBT. Detailed characterizations indicated that the incorporation of PVTP efficiently enriched UO₂²⁺ in the probe, which promoted the energy dissipation to UO₂²⁺. Besides, UO₂²⁺ was also supposed to release PVTP from PVTP⊂Tb-TBT and, thus, exposed the open metal sites to water molecules, which interrupted the sensitization effect of PVTP and induced a nonradiative energy dissipation. A limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.75 nm was recorded by suspending the PVTP⊂Tb-TBT probe in a water sample, far below the limit in drinking water set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (130 nm). Furthermore, a remotely controlled sampling and an on-site analysis of real water samples were realized by facilely loading PVTP⊂Tb-TBT on thin films (TFs). The LOD for UO₂²⁺ was 2.5 nm by using the TFs. This study reports a new strategy for boosting the sensitivity and selectivity of Ln-MOF to monitor UO₂²⁺ and expands the application of the strategy to an on-site analysis.

Low-Dimensional Organic Metal Halide Hybrids with Excitation-Dependent Optical Waveguides from Visible to Near-Infrared Emission

Molecular luminescent materials with optical waveguide properties have wide application prospects in the fields of sensors, filters, and modulators. However, designing and synthesizing optical waveguide materials with unique morphology, high emissive efficiency, and tunable optical properties in the same solid-state system remains an open challenge. In this work, we report new types of morphological one-dimensional (1D) organic metal halide hybrid micro/nanotubes and micro/nanorods, which exhibit excitation-dependent optical waveguide properties from visible to near-infrared (NIR) regions with low-loss coefficient and high emissive efficiency during the propagation process. Strong intermolecular interactions within the hybrid systems could effectively reduce the nonradiative transition and improve quantum efficiency. Photophysical studies and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the color-tunable emission can be attributed to the coexistence of locally excited states and charge-transfer states. Utilizing excitation-dependent optical waveguide emission ranging from visible to NIR regions, we fabricate an optical wavelength converter to transfer short-wavelength into long-wavelength emission with multichannels. Furthermore, an optical logic gate system was designed based on the tunable emission properties of the 1D metal halide micro/nanotubes. Therefore, this work provides not only a facile process to synthesize 1D organic metal halide hybrids with excitation-dependent optical waveguide properties but also a new way to advance photofunctional logic computation at the micro/nanoscale.

Circularly polarized luminescence from organic micro-/nano-structures

Circularly polarized light exhibits promising applications in future displays and photonic technologies. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from chiral luminophores is an ideal approach to directly generating circularly polarized light, in which the energy loss induced by the circularly polarized filters can be reduced. Among various chiral luminophores, organic micro-/nano-structures have attracted increasing attention owing to the high quantum efficiency and luminescence dissymmetry factor. Herein, the recent progress of CPL from organic micro-/nano-structures is summarized. Firstly, the design principles of CPL-active organic micro-/nano-structures are expounded from the construction of micro-/nano-structure and the introduction of chirality. Based on these design principles, several typical organic micro-/nano-structures with CPL activity are introduced in detail, including self-assembly of small molecules, self-assembly of π-conjugated polymers, and self-assembly on micro-/nanoscale architectures. Subsequently, we discuss the external stimuli that can regulate CPL performance, including solvents, pH value, metal ions, mechanical force, and temperature. We also summarize the applications of CPL-active materials in organic light-emitting diodes, optical information processing, and chemical and biological sensing. Finally, the current challenges and prospects in this emerging field are presented. It is expected that this review will provide a guide for the design of excellent CPL-active materials.

Homochiral metal-organic frameworks for enantioseparation

Obtaining homochiral compounds is of high importance to human health and environmental sustainability. Currently, enantioseparation is one of the most effective approaches to obtain homochiral compounds. Thanks to their controlled synthesis and high efficiency, homochiral metal-organic frameworks (HMOFs) are one of the most widely studied porous materials to enable enantioseparation. In this review, we discuss the chiral pocket model in depth as the key to unlock enantioselective separation mechanisms in HMOFs. In particular, we classify our discussion of these chiral pockets (also regarded as "molecular traps") into: (a) achiral/chiral linker based helical channels as a result of packing modality; and (b) chiral pores inherited from chiral ligands. Driven by a number of mechanisms of enantioseparation, conceptual advances have been recently made in the design of HMOFs for achieving high enantioseparation performances. Herein, these are systematically categorised and discussed. Further we elucidate various applications of HMOFs as regards enantioseparation, systematically classifying them into their use for purification and related analytical utility according to the reported examples. Last but not the least, we discuss the challenges and perspectives concerning the rational design of HMOFs and their corresponding enantioseparations.
