Abstract
Effectively managing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) poses difficulties due to its persistent nature and unpredictable episodes of exacerbation. There is encouraging evidence that personalized medication delivery systems can improve therapy efficacy while reducing the negative effects of standard medicines. Zein, a protein produced from corn, has garnered interest as a possible means of delivering drugs for the treatment of IBD. This review delves into Zein-based drug delivery systems, showcasing its biodegradability, controlled release capabilities, and biocompatibility. Studies have shown that Zein-based nanoparticles, microcarriers, and core-shell microparticles have the capacity to increase medication stability, enhance targeting in the intestines, and decrease toxicity in animal models of IBD. The review highlights the promise of Zein in personalized therapy for IBD and urges more study to enhance its clinical use.

Abstract
Atractylodis Rhizoma, a traditional Chinese medicine with an extensive history of treating gastrointestinal disorders and other diseases, undergoes various processing methods in China to enhance its therapeutic efficacy for specific conditions. However, a comprehensive report detailing the changes in chemical composition and pharmacological effects due to these processing methods is currently lacking. This article provides a systematic review of the commonly employed processing techniques for Atractylodis Rhizoma, including raw Atractylodis Rhizoma (SCZ), bran-fried Atractylodis Rhizoma (FCZ), deep-fried Atractylodis Rhizoma (JCZ), and rice water-processed Atractylodis Rhizoma (MCZ). It examines the alterations in chemical constituents and pharmacological activities resulting from these processes and elucidates the mechanisms of action of the primary components in the various processed forms of Atractylodis Rhizoma in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate and systematically describe the mechanism of action of Prunella vulgaris (P. vulgaris) against digestive system tumors and related toxicity reduction. METHODS This study briefly describes the history of medicinal food and the pharmacological effects of P. vulgaris, focusing on the review of the anti-digestive tumor effects of the active ingredients of P. vulgaris and the mechanism of its toxicity reduction. RESULTS The active ingredients of P. vulgaris may exert anti-tumor effects by inducing the apoptosis of cancer cells, inhibiting angiogenesis, inhibiting the migration and invasion of tumor cells, and inhibiting autophagy. In addition, P. vulgaris active ingredients inhibit the release of inflammatory factors and macrophages and increase the level of indicators of oxidative stress through the modulation of target genes in the pathway to achieve the effect of toxicity reduction. CONCLUSION The active ingredients in the medicine food homology plant P. vulgaris not only treat digestive system tumors through different mechanisms but also reduce the toxic effects. P. vulgaris is worthy of being explored more deeply.

Abstract
Multilayer structural nanoparticles (MSNPs) fabricated by layer-by-layer self-assembly were used for the co-encapsulation of resveratrol (Res) and vitamin D3 (Vd). Res and Vd co-encapsulated MSNPs (Res-Vd-MSNPs) were evaluated by appearance, morphology, particle size, ζ potential and encapsulation efficiency (EE). The results showed that Res-Vd-MSNPs were spherical in shape with a particle size of 625.4 nm and a surface charge of +26.1 mV. The EE of Res and Vd was as high as 93.6 % and 90.8 %, respectively. Res-Vd-MSNPs exhibited better stability and lower degradation rate in simulated gastric fluid, allowing the programmed sequential release of Vd and Res in simulated intestinal fluid and simulated colonic fluid, which was also confirmed by in vivo fluorescence imaging of mice. In addition, Res-Vd-MSNPs effectively alleviated the clinical symptoms of dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS)-induced colitis in mice, including weight loss, diarrhea and fecal bleeding, and it especially exerted a preventive effect on DSS-induced colon tissue damage and colon shortening. Furthermore, Res-Vd-MSNPs suppressed the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 and ameliorated DSS-induced oxidative damage, decreased colonic myeloperoxidase (MPO) and nitric oxide (NO) activities and elevated glutathione (GSH) level in DSS-treated mice. This study illustrated that MSNPs were potential carriers for developing the co-delivery system for the synergistic prevention and treatment of ulcerative colitis.

Abstract
Nanotechniques for curcumin (Cur) encapsulation provided a potential capability to avoid limitations and improve biological activities in food and pharmaceutics. Different from multi-step encapsulation systems, in this study, zein-curcumin (Z-Cur) core-shell nanoparticles could be self-assembled within Eudragit S100 (ES100) fibers through one-pot coaxial electrospinning with Cur at an encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 96% for ES100-zein-Cur (ES100-Z-Cur) and EE of 67% for self-assembled Z-Cur. The resulting structure realized the double protection of Cur by ES100 and zein, which provided both pH responsiveness and sustained release performances. The self-assembled Z-Cur nanoparticles released from fibermats were spherical (diameter 328 nm) and had a relatively uniform distribution (polydispersity index 0.62). The spherical structures of Z-Cur nanoparticles and Z-Cur nanoparticles loaded in ES100 fibermats could be observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) revealed that hydrophobic interactions occurred between the encapsulated Cur and zein, while Cur was amorphous (rather than in crystalline form). Loading in the fibermat could significantly enhance the photothermal stability of Cur. This novel one-pot system much more easily and efficiently combined nanoparticles and fibers together, offering inherent advantages such as step economy, operational simplicity, and synthetic efficiency. These core-shell biopolymer fibermats which incorporate Cur can be applied in pharmaceutical products toward the goals of sustainable and controllable intestine-targeted drug delivery.

Abstract
Stigmasterol is a phytosterol derived from multiple herbaceous plants such as herbs, soybean and tobacco, and it has received much attention for its various pharmacological effects including anti-inflammation, anti-diabetes, anti-oxidization, and lowering blood cholesterol. Multiple studies have revealed that stigmasterol holds promise as a potentially beneficial therapeutic agent for malignant tumors because of its significant anti-tumor bioactivity. It is reported that stigmasterol has anti-tumor effect in a variety of malignancies (e.g., breast, lung, liver and ovarian cancers) by promoting apoptosis, inhibiting proliferation, metastasis and invasion, and inducing autophagy in tumor cells. Mechanistic study shows that stigmasterol triggers apoptosis in tumor cells by regulating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and the generation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, while its anti-proliferative activity is mainly dependent on its modulatory effect on cyclin proteins and cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK). There have been multiple mechanisms underlying the anti-tumor effect of stigmasterol, which make stigmasterol promising as a new anti-tumor agent and provide insights into research on its anti-tumor role. Presently, stigmasterol has been poorly understood, and there is a paucity of systemic review on the mechanism underlying its anti-tumor effect. The current study attempts to conduct a literature review on stigmasterol for its anti-tumor effect to provide reference for researchers and clinical workers.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with the microbial composition of the gut and its metabolites. Akkermansia muciniphila is a probiotic that exerts a significant alleviative or therapeutic effect on host enteritis. This study was designed to determine the protective effect and potential mechanism underlying the secretion of β-acetylaminohexosidase (Amuc_2109) by A. muciniphila against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. C57BL/6 mice were gavaged with Amuc_2109 for 21 days, and during the last seven days of treatment, they drank DSS dissolved in their drinking water to induce colitis. Our results showed that supplementation with Amuc_2109 improved DSS-induced colitis as evidenced by lowered disease activity index (DAI) scores, reduced weight loss, increased colon length, and inhibited oxidative stress. In addition, Amuc_2109 inhibited the overexpression of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) and the NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in DSS-induced colitis. Furthermore, supplementation with Amuc_2109 also restored the mRNA expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, occludin, claudin-1). Further analysis of fecal microbial 16S rRNA sequences showed that Amuc_2109 reshaped the intestinal microbiota. While the anti-inflammatory effects of Amuc_2109 were only manifested with the wild-type protein, the anti-inflammatory effects were completely lost after the mutation of its key catalytic amino acids rendered Amuc_2109 inactive. In summary, these findings demonstrate the potential of Amuc_2109, as a therapeutic agent for ulcerative colitis. We posit that it will provide additional assistance in the prevention and treatment of mucus layer-related diseases such as ulcerative colitis.
