Recent progress of ultra-narrow-bandgap polymer donors for NIR-absorbing organic solar cells

Aggregation-induced emissive nanoarchitectures for luminescent solar concentrators

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE), the phenomenon by which selected luminophores undergo the enhancement of emission intensity upon aggregation, has demonstrated potential in materials and biomaterials science, and in particular in those branches for which spectral management in the solid state is of fundamental importance. Its development in the area of luminescent spectral conversion devices like luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) is instead still in its infancy. This account aims at summarizing relevant contributions made in this field so far, with a special emphasis on the design of molecular and macromolecular architectures capable of extending their spectral breadth to the deep-red (DR) and the near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Because of the many prospective advantages characterizing these spectral regions in terms of photon flux density and human-eye perception, it is anticipated that further development in the design, synthesis and engineering of advanced molecular and macromolecular DR/NIR-active AIE luminophores will enable faster and easier integration of LSCs into the built environment as highly transparent, active elements for unobtrusive light-to-electricity conversion.

Colorless Near-Infrared Absorbing Dyes Based on B-N Fused Donor-Acceptor-Donor π-Conjugated Molecules for Organic Phototransistors

The introduction of a colorless function to organic electronic devices allows responses to light in the near-infrared (NIR) region and is expected to broaden the applications of these devices. However, the development of a colorless NIR dye remains a challenge due to the lack of a rational molecular design for controlling electronic transitions. In this study, to suppress the π-π* transitions in the visible region, polycyclic donor-acceptor-donor π-conjugated molecules with boron bridges (Py-FNTz-B and IP-FNTz-B) are designed and synthesized, which contain pyrrole or indenopyrrole as donor units with fluorinated naphthobisthiadiazole (FNTz) as an acceptor unit. The pyrrole end-capped Py-FNTz-B shows an absorption band in the NIR region without distinct visible-light absorption, which has led to the establishment of colorless characteristics. The indenopyrrole end-capped IP-FNTz-B shows a narrow optical energy gap of 0.87 eV in films. Time-resolved microwave conductance and field-effect transistors demonstrate the semiconducting characteristics of these molecules, and Py-FNTz-B-based devices function as NIR phototransistors. Theoretical analyses indicate that the combination of a polyene-like electronic structure with orbital symmetry is important to obtain NIR wavelength-selective absorption. This study suggests that a molecular design based on electronic structures can be effective in the development of colorless NIR-absorbing dyes for organic electronics.

Rational Design of NIR-II Emitting Conjugated Polymer Derived Nanoparticles for Image-Guided Cancer Interventions

Due to the reduced absorption, light scattering, and tissue autofluorescence in the NIR-II (1000-1700 nm) region, significant efforts are underway to explore diverse material platforms for in vivo fluorescence imaging, particularly for cancer diagnostics and image-guided interventions. Of the reported imaging agents, nanoparticles derived from conjugated polymers (CPNs) offer unique advantages to alternative materials including biocompatibility, remarkable absorption cross-sections, exceptional photostability, and tunable emission behavior independent of cell labeling functionalities. Herein, the current state of NIR-II emitting CPNs are summarized and structure-function-property relationships are highlighted that can be used to elevate the performance of next-generation CPNs. Methods for particle processing and incorporating cancer targeting modalities are discussed, as well as detailed characterization methods to improve interlaboratory comparisons of novel materials. Contemporary methods to specifically apply CPNs for cancer diagnostics and therapies are then highlighted. This review not only summarizes the current state of the field, but offers future directions and provides clarity to the advantages of CPNs over other classes of imaging agents.

Sensitive Organic Photodetectors With Spectral Response up to 1.3 µm Using a Quinoidal Molecular Semiconductor

Detecting short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) light has underpinned several emerging technologies. However, the development of highly sensitive organic photodetectors (OPDs) operating in the SWIR region is hindered by their poor external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) and high dark currents. Herein, the development of high-sensitivity SWIR-OPDs with an efficient photoelectric response extending up to 1.3 µm is reported. These OPDs utilize a new ultralow-bandgap molecular semiconductor featuring a quinoidal tricyclic electron-deficient central unit and multiple non-covalent conformation locks. The SWIR-OPD achieves an unprecedented EQE of 26% under zero bias and an even more impressive EQE of up to 41% under a -4 V bias at 1.10 µm, effectively pushing the detection limit of silicon photodetectors. Additionally, the low energetic disorder and trap density in the active layer lead to significant suppression of thermal-generation carriers and dark current, resulting in excellent detectivity (Dsh *) exceeding 1013 Jones from 0.50 to 1.21 µm and surpassing 1012 Jones even at 1.30 µm under zero bias, marking the highest achievements for OPDs beyond the silicon limit to date. Validation with photoplethysmography measurements, a spectrometer prototype in the 0.35-1.25 µm range, and image capture under 1.20 µm irradiation demonstrate the extensive applications of this SWIR-OPD.

Quantum Chemistry-Machine Learning Approach for Predicting Properties of Lewis Acid-Lewis Base Adducts

Synthetic design allowing predictive control of charge transfer and other optoelectronic properties of Lewis acid adducts remains elusive. This challenge must be addressed through complementary methods combining experimental with computational insights from first principles. Ab initio calculations for optoelectronic properties can be computationally expensive and less straightforward than those sufficient for simple ground-state properties, especially for adducts of large conjugated molecules and Lewis acids. In this contribution, we show that machine learning (ML) can accurately predict density functional theory (DFT)-calculated charge transfer and even properties associated with excited states of adducts from readily obtained molecular descriptors. Seven ML models, built from a dataset of over 1000 adducts, show exceptional performance in predicting charge transfer and other optoelectronic properties with a Pearson correlation coefficient of up to 0.99. More importantly, the influence of each molecular descriptor on predicted properties can be quantitatively evaluated from ML models. This contributes to the optimization of a priori design of Lewis adducts for future applications, especially in organic electronics.

Fluorinated Dihydropentalene-1,4-Dione: A Strong Electron-Accepting Unit with Organic Semiconductor Characteristics

The development of electron-accepting units is of significant importance because the construction of donor (D)-acceptor (A) configurations is an effective strategy for tuning the electronic properties of π-conjugated systems. Although doubly fused pentagons represented by diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) have been used as an effective electron-accepting unit, the relatively high-lying frontier molecular orbital levels (FMOs) leave room for further improvement. We report herein the synthesis of a fluorinated dihydropentalene-1,4-dione (FPD) derivative as a strong electron-accepting unit and the development of D-A-D π-extended molecules. X-ray analyses revealed that the presence of fluorine atoms contributed to the formation of high planar structures and slipped-stacked packing. Electrochemical measurements indicated that the FPD derivatives showed relatively lower FMO energy levels than the corresponding DPP-containing derivatives. The D-A-D molecule based on terthiophene and FPD showed semiconducting responses. This study demonstrates that the FPD unit can function as a new acceptor unit for organic semiconductors.

New Benzotriazole and Benzodithiophene-Based Conjugated Terpolymer Bearing a Fluorescein Derivative as Side-Group: In-Ternal Förster Resonance Energy Transfer to Improve Organic Solar Cells

A new benzodithiophene and benzotriazole-based terpolymer bearing a fluorescein derivative as a side group was synthesized and studied for organic solar cell (OSC) applications. This side group was covalently bounded to the backbone through an n-hexyl chain to induce the intramolecular Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) process and thus improve the photovoltaic performance of the polymeric material. The polymer exhibited good solubility in common organic chlorinated solvents as well as thermal stability (TDT10% > 360 °C). Photophysical measurements demonstrated the occurrence of the FRET phenomenon between the lateral group and the terpolymer. The terpolymer exhibited an absorption band centered at 501 nm, an optical bandgap of 2.02 eV, and HOMO and LUMO energy levels of −5.30 eV and −3.28 eV, respectively. A preliminary study on terpolymer-based OSC devices showed a low power-conversion efficiency (PCE) but a higher performance than devices based on an analogous polymer without the fluorescein derivative. These results mean that the design presented here is a promising strategy to improve the performance of polymers used in OSCs.

Organic Photodetectors with Extended Spectral Response Range Assisted by Plasmonic Hot-Electron Injection

Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have aroused intensive attention for signal detection in industrial and scientific applications due to their advantages including low cost, mechanical flexibility, and large-area fabrication. As one of the most common organic light-emitting materials, 8-hydroxyquinolinato aluminum (Alq₃) has an absorption wavelength edge of 460 nm. Here, through the introduction of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs), the spectral response range of the Alq₃-based OPD was successfully extended to the near-infrared range. It was found that introducing Ag NPs can induce rich plasmonic resonances, generating plenty of hot electrons, which could be injected into Alq₃ and then be collected. Moreover, as a by-product of introducing Ag NPs, the dark current was suppressed by around two orders of magnitude by forming a Schottky junction on the cathode side. These two effects in combination produced photoelectric signals with significant contrasts at wavelengths beyond the Alq₃ absorption band. It was found that the OPD with Ag NPs can stably generate electric signals under illumination by pulsed 850 nm LED, while the output of the reference device included no signal. Our work contributes to the development of low-cost, broadband OPDs for applications in flexible electronics, bio-imaging sensors, etc.

Photovoltaic Cell Generations and Current Research Directions for Their Development

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the different generations of photovoltaic cells and current research directions focusing on their development and manufacturing technologies. The introduction describes the importance of photovoltaics in the context of environmental protection, as well as the elimination of fossil sources. It then focuses on presenting the known generations of photovoltaic cells to date, mainly in terms of the achievable solar-to-electric conversion efficiencies, as well as the technology for their manufacture. In particular, the third generation of photovoltaic cells and recent trends in its field, including multi-junction cells and cells with intermediate energy levels in the forbidden band of silicon, are discussed. We also present the latest developments in photovoltaic cell manufacturing technology, using the fourth-generation graphene-based photovoltaic cells as an example. An extensive review of the world literature led us to the conclusion that, despite the appearance of newer types of photovoltaic cells, silicon cells still have the largest market share, and research into ways to improve their efficiency is still relevant.

A Review on the Materials Science and Device Physics of Semitransparent Organic Photovoltaics

In this review, the current state of materials science and the device physics of semitransparent organic solar cells is summarized. Relevant synthetic strategies to narrow the band gap of organic semiconducting molecules are outlined, and recent developments in the polymer donor and near-infrared absorbing acceptor materials are discussed. Next, an overview of transparent electrodes is given, including oxides, multi-stacks, thin metal, and solution processed electrodes, as well as considerations that are unique to ST-OPVs. The remainder of this review focuses on the device engineering of ST-OPVs. The figures of merit and the theoretical limitations of ST-OPVs are covered, as well as strategies to improve the light utilization efficiency. Lastly, the importance of creating an in-depth understanding of the device physics of ST-OPVs is emphasized and the existing works that answer fundamental questions about the inherent changes in the optoelectronic processes in transparent devices are presented in a condensed way. This last part outlines the changes that are unique for devices with increased transparency and the resulting implications, serving as a point of reference for the systematic development of next-generation ST-OPVs.

Diketo-Pyrrolo Pyrrole-Based Acceptor-Acceptor Copolymers with Deep HOMO and LUMO Levels Absorbing in the Near Infrared

A series of acceptor-acceptor (A-A’) alternated copolymers based on dithienodiketopyrrolo pyrrole were synthesized by copolymerizing it with itself and other different electron-poor monomers. The experimental and computed optoelectronic properties of four DPP-based copolymers, P(DPP-DPP) (with linear and branched chains), copolymer with diazapentalene P(DPP-DAP) and also with dioxothienopyrrolebenzodifurandione P(DPP-BTPBF), as well as thermal characterizations were described. UV-visible spectrophotometry and cyclic voltammetry were used to estimate the optical and electrochemical bandgaps, and were found as very small: 1.3, 1.0, and 0.9 eV for P(DPP-DPP), P(DPP-DAP), and P(DPP-BTPBF), respectively. The BTPBF unit allowed a strong reduction of the bandgap, leading to a broad absorption in the visible and near infra-red regions from 650 to 1450 nm. These results were compared to analogous donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers previously reported, in which DPP is replaced by DTS, P(DTS-DPP), P(DTS-DAP), and P(DTS-BTPBF). The same trend was observed. By comparing A-A’ to D-A’ copolymers analogues, it was shown that the bandgap remained the same while both HOMO and LUMO levels were lowered by roughly 0.2 eV.

Near-Infrared Materials: The Turning Point of Organic Photovoltaics

Near-infrared (NIR)-absorbing organic semiconductors have opened up many exciting opportunities for organic photovoltaic (OPV) research. For example, new chemistries and synthetical methodologies have been developed; especially, the breakthrough Y-series acceptors, originally invented by our group, specifically Y1, Y3, and Y6, have contributed immensely to boosting single-junction solar cell efficiency to around 19%; novel device architectures such as tandem and transparent organic photovoltaics have been realized. The concept of NIR donors/acceptors thus becomes a turning point in the OPV field. Here, the development of NIR-absorbing materials for OPVs is reviewed. According to the low-energy absorption window, here, NIR photovoltaic materials (p-type (polymers) and n-type (fullerene and nonfullerene)) are classified into four categories: 700-800 nm, 800-900 nm, 900-1000 nm, and greater than 1000 nm. Each subsection covers the design, synthesis, and utilization of various types of donor (D) and acceptor (A) units. The structure-property relationship between various kinds of D, A units and absorption window are constructed to satisfy requirements for different applications. Subsequently, a variety of applications realized by NIR materials, including transparent OPVs, tandem OPVs, photodetectors, are presented. Finally, challenges and future development of novel NIR materials for the next-generation organic photovoltaics and beyond are discussed.

High-Performance Near-Infrared Photodetectors Based on the Synergy Effect of Short Wavelength Light Filter and Long Wavelength Response of a Perovskite/Polymer Hybrid Structure

Near-infrared photodetectors (NIR-PDs) are widely used in communications, biomedical imaging, and national defense. Here we report a new strategy to prepare a short wavelength light filter based NIR-PDs by introducing an interface layer between the perovskite layer and the polymer layer to achieve the selective passage of carriers. Through the synergistic effect of the perovskite and the interface layer, the short wavelength light component in the signal spectrum is effectively filtered out. The organic polymer layer with a bulk heterojunction structure is applied to realize the absorption and conversion of near-infrared light. The prepared device achieves a maximum external quantum efficiency of 83.7% without bias, a high specific detectivity of 1.52 × 10¹³ Jones, an NIR responsivity of 0.577A/W, and a short response time of 1.73/0.97 μs within the detection range from 770 to 900 nm. All these properties show great advantages compared with other perovskite/polymer hybrid NIR photodetectors that have been reported. This innovative strategy provides a new way to prepare high-performance near-infrared photodetectors.
