Enhancing photoelectrochemical water splitting with plasmonic Au nanoparticles

An elliptical nanoantenna array plasmonic metasurface for efficient solar energy harvesting

Plasmonic metasurfaces with subwavelength nanoantenna arrays have attracted much attention for their ability to control and manage optical properties. Solar absorbers are potential candidates for effectively converting photons into heat and electricity. This study introduces a novel ultrathin metasurface solar absorber employing elliptical-shaped nanoantenna arrays. We theoretically and numerically demonstrate a near-perfect broadband absorber with over 90% absorption efficiency in a wide range of wavelengths of 300-2500 nm, using finite element (FEM) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods. The proposed nanostructure configuration enhances light absorption by exciting localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) between elliptical-shaped nanoantenna gaps at many wavelengths, maintaining stability at wide incident angles and insensitivity to light polarization. Compared to other state-of-the-art absorbers with a thickness of less than 300 nm, the designed nanostructure with 260 nm thickness achieves over 90% optical absorption across a broad range of wavelengths of 300-1116 nm in air (or vacuum) environments and performs effectively under water conditions for solar energy harvesting in a range of wavelengths of 300-1436 nm, and therefore can serve as a solar evaporator. Combining refractory plasmonic titanium nitride (TiN) and semiconductor gallium nitride (GaN) nanostructures holds great potential for efficient optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications, especially in harsh and high-temperature environments like thermophotovoltaic systems. The TiN-based metasurface absorber, with its ultrathin nanostructure and suitable spectral absorption in ultraviolet-visible-infrared spectra, offers scalability and cost-effectiveness. The findings in this work will deepen our understanding of LSPRs and pave a novel path for efficient solar energy conversion.

Double Perovskite LaFe1−xNixO3 Coated with Sea Urchin-like Gold Nanoparticles Using Electrophoresis as the Photoelectrochemical Electrode to Enhance H2 Production via Surface Plasmon Resonance Effect

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and the hetero-junction structure play crucial roles in enhancing the photocatalytic performances of catalysts for the water-splitting reaction. In this study, a series of double perovskites LaFe1−xNixO3 was synthesized. LaFe1−xNixO3 particles were then decorated with sea urchin-like Au nanoparticles (NPs) with the average size of approximately 109.83 ± 8.48 nm via electrophoresis. The d-spacing became narrow and the absorption spectra occurred the redshift phenomenon more when doping increasing Ni mole concentrations for the raw LaFe1−xNixO3 samples. From XPS analysis, the Ni atoms were inserted into the lattice of the matrix, resulting in the defect of the oxygen vacancy, and NiO and Fe2O3 were formed. This hybrid structure was the ideal electrode for photoelectrochemical hydrogen production. The photonic extinction of the Au-coated LaFe1−xNixO3 was less than 2.1 eV (narrow band gap), and the particles absorbed more light in the visible region. According to the Mott–Schottky plots, all the LaFe1−xNixO3 samples were the n-type semiconductors. Moreover, all the band gaps of the Au-coated LaFe1−xNixO3 samples were higher than 1.23 eV (H+/H2). Then, the hot electrons from the Au NPs were injected via the SPR effect, the coupling effect between LaFe1−xNixO3 and Au NPs, and the more active sites from Au NPs into the conduction band of the semiconductor, improving the hydrogen efficiency. The H2 efficiency of the Au-coated LaFe1−xNixO3 measured in ethanol was approximately ten times larger than the that of Au-coated LaFe1−xNixO3 measured in 1-butanol at any testing temperature because ohmic and kinetic losses occurred in the latter solvent. Thus, the activation energies of ethanol at any testing temperature were smaller. The maximum real H2 production was up to 43,800 μmol g−1 h−1 in ethanol. The redox reactions among metal ions, OH*, and oxides were consecutively proceeded under visible light illumination.

Hybrid Plasmonic Nanomaterials for Hydrogen Generation and Carbon Dioxide Reduction

The successful development of artificial photosynthesis requires finding new materials able to efficiently harvest sunlight and catalyze hydrogen generation and carbon dioxide reduction reactions. Plasmonic nanoparticles are promising candidates for these tasks, due to their ability to confine solar energy into molecular regions. Here, we review recent developments in hybrid plasmonic photocatalysis, including the combination of plasmonic nanomaterials with catalytic metals, semiconductors, perovskites, 2D materials, metal-organic frameworks, and electrochemical cells. We perform a quantitative comparison of the demonstrated activity and selectivity of these materials for solar fuel generation in the liquid phase. In this way, we critically assess the state-of-the-art of hybrid plasmonic photocatalysts for solar fuel production, allowing its benchmarking against other existing heterogeneous catalysts. Our analysis allows the identification of the best performing plasmonic systems, useful to design a new generation of plasmonic catalysts.

Surface plasmon-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting of a Ag/TiO2 nanoplate photoanode

A silver/titanium dioxide nanoplate (Ag/TiO₂ NP) photoelectrode was designed and fabricated from vertically aligned TiO₂ nanoplates (NP) decorated with silver nanoparticles (NPs) through a simple hydrothermal synthesis and electrodeposition route. The electrodeposition times of Ag NPs on the TiO₂ NP were crucial for surface plasmon-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance. The Ag/TiO₂ NP at the optimal deposition time of 5 min with a Ag element content of 0.53 wt% demonstrated a remarkably high photocurrent density of 0.35 mA cm⁻² at 1.23 V vs. RHE under AM 1.5G illumination, which was 5 fold higher than that of the pristine TiO₂ NP. It was clear that the enhanced light absorption properties and PEC performance for Ag/TiO₂ NP could be effectively adjusted by simply controlling the loading amounts of metallic Ag NPs (average size of 10–30 nm) at different electrodeposition times. The superior PEC performance of the Ag/TiO₂ NP photoanode was attributed to the synergistic effects of the plasmonic Ag NPs and the TiO₂ nanoplate. Interestingly, the plasmonic effect of Ag NPs not only increased the visible-light response (λ_max = 570 nm) of TiO₂ but also provided hot electrons to promote photocurrent generation and suppress charge recombination. Importantly, this study offers a potentially efficient strategy for the design and fabrication of a new type of TiO₂ hybrid nanostructure with a plasmonic enhancement for PEC water splitting.

A hybrid nanostructure Ag/TiO₂ photoelectrode for PEC water splitting with a remarkable high photocurrent density, 0.35 mA cm⁻² (5 fold higher than that of the pristine TiO₂ photoeletrode) was fabricated by a facile one-pot hydrothermal and electrodeposition method.
