Application and prospects of EMOFs in the fields of explosives and propellants

Energetic Metal-Organic Framework (EMOF) compounds have gained significant attention in recent years as a hot research topic in the fields of explosives and propellants. This article provides an overview of the latest research progress of EMOFs in various areas, including heat-resistant explosives, burning rate catalysts and initiating explosives. It discusses the recent development trends of high-energy EMOFs, such as high-dimensional and solvent-free structural design, simplified and scalable synthesis conditions, environmentally friendly manufacturing processes with tunable structures, high-energy, low-sensitivity and multifunctional target products. The challenges and issues faced by EMOFs in heat-resistant explosives, burning rate catalysts and initiating explosives are presented. Furthermore, the key research directions for future applications of EMOFs in the fields of explosives and propellants are discussed, including solvent-free high-dimensional EMOFs design and synthesis, precise modulation of EMOFs molecular composition and pore structure, improvement of accurate prediction methods for physicochemical properties of high-energy EMOFs, low-cost large-scale production and development of multifunctional composite EMOFs as energetic materials, exploration of influencing factors, and comprehensive study on the application of novel and high-performance multifunctional EMOFs.

Cu/Cu2O/C nanoparticles and MXene based composite for non-enzymatic glucose sensors

Copper/Cuprous oxide/Carbon nanoparticles decorated MXene composite was prepared and subsequently examined for its potential application as a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. To carry out this, initially the Cu MOF/MXene composite was synthesised by the hydrothermal method and was annealed in an unreacted environment at different time intervals. During this process, petal like Cu MOF on MXene loses the organic ligands to form a Cu/Cu2O/C based nanoparticles on MXene. Further, an electrode was fabricated with the developed material for understanding the sensing performance by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in 0.1 M NaOH solution. Results reveal that the highest weight percentage of copper oxide in the composite (15 min of annealed material) shows a higher electro catalytic activity for sensing glucose molecules due to more active sites with good electron transfer ability in the composite. The formed composite exhibits a wide linear range of 0.001-26.5 mM, with a sensitivity of 762.53μAmM-1cm-2(0.001-10.1 mM), and 397.18μAmM-1cm-2(11.2-26.9 mM) and the limit of detection was 0.103μM. In addition to this, the prepared electrode shows a good reusability, repeatability, selectivity with other interferences, stability (93.65% after 30 days of storage), and feasibility of measuring glucose in real samples. This finding reveals that the metal oxide derived from MOF based nanoparticle on the MXene surface will promote the use of non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

Unveiling the unprecedented catalytic capability of micro-sized Co-ZIF-L for the thermal decomposition of RDX by 2D-structure-induced mechanism reversal

Developing MOF-based catalysts with superior catalytic properties for the thermal decomposition of cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) is significant for the application of novel and efficient combustion catalysts oriented to RDX-based propellants with excellent combustion performance. Herein, micro-sized Co-ZIF-L with a star-like morphology (SL-Co-ZIF-L) was found to exhibit unprecedented catalytic capability for the decomposition of RDX, which can lower the decomposition temperature of RDX by 42.9 °C and boost the heat release by 50.8%, superior to that of all the ever-reported MOFs and even ZIF-67, which has similar chemical composition but a much smaller size. In-depth mechanism study from both experimental and theoretical views reveals that the weekly interacted 2D layered structure of SL-Co-ZIF-L could activate the exothermic C-N fission pathway for the decomposition of RDX in the condensed phase, thus reversing the commonly advantageous N-N fission pathway and promoting the decomposition process in the low-temperature stage. Our study reveals the unusually superior catalytic capability of micro-sized MOF catalysts and sheds light on the rational structure design of catalysts used in micromolecule transformation reactions, typically the thermal decomposition of energetic materials.

Energetic Bimetallic MOF: A Promising Promoter for Ionic Liquid Hypergolic Ignition

A bimetallic MOF, CoNi(EIM)₂(DCA)₂ (1), containing an energetic 1-ethylimidazole (EIM) ligand and a hypergolic linker, dicyandiamide (DCA), was synthesized via a facile method. A fascinating three-dimensional reticular architecture was observed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in this bimetallic MOF, whereas the corresponding monometallic compounds Co(EIM)₄(DCA)₂ (2) and Ni(EIM)₄(DCA)₂ (3) were in the mononuclear coordination mode. Uniformly distributed Co and Ni were observed in the bimetallic MOF crystals by SEM-EDS elemental mapping. Bimetallic MOF 1 was thermally stable and insensitive to mechanical stimuli and possessed an excellent energetic density (22.37 kJ·g^-1). Using 1 as a hypergolic promoter, the ignition delay time of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (BMIM DCA) was reduced from 53 to 37 ms, better than that of 2 and 3 as promoters, due to the synergistic catalysis of the bimetal. Furthermore, the thermal decomposition mechanisms of BMIM DCA with 1, 2, and 3 were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). 1 had the best catalytic performance in BMIM DCA thermolysis with a decrease in the decomposition temperature from 314.5 to 308.0 °C and a decrease in the activation energy by 16.3%. All results shed light on the better catalytic effect of the bimetallic MOF on ionic liquid hypergolic ignition than monometallic coordination compounds.

Facile Manufacture of Oxide-Free Cu Particles Coated with Oleic Acid by Electrical Discharge Machining

Particle synthesis has seen significant advances in current trends. However, the synthesis of metal particles without oxidation is a challenge for researchers. The current study presents a straightforward, convenient, and convincing approach for manufacturing copper (Cu) particles free of surface oxide. The die-sink Electrical Discharge Machine (EDM) of copper alloys with oleic acid resulted in the formation of Cu particles with diameters between 10 to 20 µm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used for particle examination after cleaning and sonication with distilled water. Cu particles with oleic acid coating retained a Cu phase without oxidation after synthesis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to determine the size and morphology of generated particles. Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR) analysis revealed the oleic acid-coated Cu surface bonded with an oxygen atom. Also, the agglomeration and change of size involving Cu particles with increasing voltages in the pulse supply in EDM were reported.

Facile synthesis and superior properties of a nitrogen-rich energetic Zn-MOF with a 2D azide-bridged bilayer structure

Exploring the facile synthesis of Pb-free energetic metal-organic frameworks (EMOFs) with both high nitrogen content and high thermostability is a significant but challenging task in the field of MOF-based green energetic materials. Herein, a new EMOF, [Zn₂(atz)₃(N₃)]_n (atz = 5-amino-1H-tetrazole), has been synthesized by simply using a commercial ligand (atz) under mild conditions. A probable mechanism for the formation of azide groups in the product has been proposed, in which the fraction of C-N and N-N bonds in atz is the key. The X-ray single crystal structure analysis reveals the EMOF's unique graphene-like and azide-group-bridged 2D bilayer structure with gourd-type micropores. More impressively, the EMOF shows a high nitrogen content of 59.33% and superior thermostability of up to 362 °C, both among the best of existing EMOFs. In addition, detonation property calculations and sensitivity tests have been carried out, which demonstrate its high-energy and low-sensitivity features. Moreover, [Zn₂(atz)₃(N₃)]_n shows the ability to accelerate the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) and hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20), making it a potential combustion promoter for green and insensitive propellants.
