Novel prism shaped C3N4-doped Fe@Co3O4 nanocomposites and their dye degradation and bactericidal potential with molecular docking study

Outstanding Performance of Mg/g-C3N4-Doped Al2O3 Serving as a Nanocatalyst and Its Bactericidal Behavior: An In Silico Molecular Docking Study

A coprecipitation approach was employed to synthesize aluminum oxide (Al2O3) with a fixed quantity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and various concentrations of Mg (2 and 4 wt. %). The main objective of this research is to explore and enhance the dye degradation potential and antimicrobial efficacy of synthesized pristine and doped Al2O3 with molecular docking analysis. Al2O3 has potent mechanical, thermal, antimicrobial, phosphoric, optical, and electrical properties, but it leaches into water and has a high band gap and low refractive index. g-C3N4 was incorporated into Al2O3 to increase the degradation potency. The incorporation of Mg enhances the metal oxide characteristics and performance in catalysis. XRD patterns revealed the orthorhombic phase of Al2O3. The SAED pattern of Al2O3 and (2 and 4 wt %) Mg/g-C3N4-Al2O3 nanostructures (NSs) showed bright polycrystalline rings. UV-visible spectra showed the absorption of Al2O3 at 289 nm, and upon doping, a blue shift was accompanied. The EDS spectra indicated the existence of Al, O, Na, and Mg, thereby verifying the elemental composition of the pristine and doped samples. TEM images revealed the nanowires (NWs) of Al2O3. The NSs demonstrated outstanding catalytic performance for the remediation of RhB dye in a basic medium of around 97.36%. Mg/g-C3N4-Al2O3 (4 wt %) exhibited a notable augmentation in the inhibition zone, measuring 5.25 mm, when exposed to high-level doses against Staphylococcus aureus. In silico predictions have recently shed light on the underlying mystery of the bactericidal actions of these doped NSs against specific enzyme targets such as DNA gyraseS. aureus.

Synthesis of curcuma longa doped cellulose grafted hydrogel for catalysis, bactericidial and insilico molecular docking analysis

Curcumin (diferuloylmethane), the primary curcuminoid in turmeric rhizome, has been acknowledged as a bioactive compound for numerous pharmacological activities. Nonetheless, the hydrophobic nature, rapid metabolism, and physicochemical and biological instability of this phenolic compound correspond to its poor bioavailability. So, recent scientific advances have found many components and strategies for enhancing the bioavailability of curcumin with the inclusion of biotechnology and nanotechnology to address its existing limitations. Therefore, In this study, copolymerized aqua-gel was synthesized by graft polymerization of poly-acrylic acid (P-AA) on cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), after that Curcuma longa (Cur) was incorporated as dopant (5, 10, 15, and 25 mg) in hydrogel (Cur/C-P) as a stabilizing agent for evaluation of bacterial potential and sewage treatment. The antioxidant tendency of 25 mg Cur/C-P was much higher (72.21 %) than other samples and displayed a catalytic activity of up to 93.89 % in acidic conditions and optimized bactericidal inclinations toward gram-positive bacterial strains. Furthermore, ligand binding was conducted against targeted protein enoyl-[acylcarrier-protein] reductase (FabI) enzyme to comprehend the putative mechanism of microbicidal action of CNC-PAA (CP), Cur/C-P, and curcumin. Our outcomes suggest that 25 mg Cur/C-P hydrogels are plausible sources for hybrid, multifunctional biological activity.

Using biologically synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles as potential remedy against multiple drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus of bovine mastitis

Presently, there is considerable emphasis on biological synthesis of nanoparticles containing bioactive reducing compounds with an aim to mitigate the harmful effects of pollutants. The approach under study is simple and ideal for the production of durable antimicrobial nanomaterials by novel single-step green synthesis of TiO2 metal oxide nanostructures using ginger and garlic crude aqueous extracts with bactericidal and catalytic activity. A variety of experimental techniques were used to characterize the synthesized nanomaterials. As demonstrated using x-ray diffraction and ultra-violet visible spectroscopy, the produced nanoparticles exhibited high absorption at 318 nm with size varying between 23.38 nm for ginger and 58.64 nm for garlic in biologically-reduced TiO2. At increasing concentrations (500, 1000 µg/50 µl), nanoparticles reduced with garlic exhibited enhanced bactericidal efficacy against multiple drug-resistant S. aureus and effectively decomposed toxic methylene blue (MB) dye. In conclusion, biologically-reduced TiO2 nanoparticles may prove an effective tool in the fight against microbial illnesses and drug resistance.

Efficient Samarium-Grafted-C3N4-Doped α-MoO3 Used as a Dye Degrader and Antibacterial Agent: In Silico Molecular Docking Study

This study was used to evaluate the catalytic activity (CA) and bactericidal activity of α-MoO3 and Sm-g-C3N4-doped α-MoO3 composites prepared through an efficient, cost-effective coprecipitation route. Their characteristic studies verify the formation of α-MoO3 and its composites (3, 6, and 9 mL Sm-g-C3N4-doped α-MoO3), which showed high crystallinity, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The production of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals due to charge transfer through α-MoO3 and g-C3N4 eventually forms electrons in g-C3N4 and holes around α-MoO3. CA against Rhodamine B (RhB) in basic medium provides maximum results compared to acidic and neutral media. The bactericidal efficacy of the (9 mL) doped sample represents a greater inhibition zone of 6.10 mm against the negative bacterial strain Escherichia coli. Furthermore, in silico studies showed that the generated nanorods may inhibit DNA gyrase and dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) enzymes.

Preparation of high-crystalline and non-metal modified g-C3N4 for improving ultrasound-accelerated white-LED-light-driven photocatalytic performances

As a non-metallic organic semiconductor, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has received much attention due to its unique physicochemical properties. However, the photocatalytic activity of this semiconductor faces challenges due to factors such as low electronic conductivity and limited active sites provided on its surface. The morphology and structure of g-C3N4, including macro/micro morphology, crystal structure and electronic structure can affect its catalytic activity. Non-metallic heteroatom doping is considered as an effective method to tune the optical, electronic and other physicochemical properties of g-C3N4. Here, we synthesized non-metal-doped highly crystalline g-C3N4 by one-pot calcination method, which enhanced the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 such as mesoporous nature, reduced band gap, wide-range photousability, improved charge carrier recombination, and the electrical conductivity was improved. Hence, the use of low-power white-LED-light illumination (λ ≥ 420 nm) and ultrasound (US) irradiation synergistically engendered the Methylene Blue (MB) mineralization efficiency elevated to 100% within 120 min by following the pseudo-first-order mechanism under the following condition (i.e., pH 11, 0.75 g L-1 of O-doped g-C3N4 and S-doped g-C3N4, 20 mg L-1 MB, 0.25 ml s-1 O2, and spontaneous raising temperature). In addition, the rapid removal of MB by sonophotocatalysis was 4 times higher than that of primary photocatalysis. And radical scavenging experiments showed that the maximum distribution of active species corresponds to superoxide radical [Formula: see text]. More importantly, the sonophotocatalytic degradation ability of O-doped g-C3N4 and S-doped g-C3N4 was remarkably sustained even after the sixth consecutive run.

Enhanced Sunlight-Powered Photocatalysis and Methanol Oxidation Activities of Co3O4-Embedded Polymeric Carbon Nitride Nanostructures

The contamination of water by organic substances poses a significant global challenge. To address these pressing environmental and energy concerns, this study emphasizes the importance of developing effective photocatalysts powered by sunlight. In this research, we achieved the successful synthesis of a novel photocatalyst comprised of polymeric carbon nitride (CN) nanosheets embedded with Co3O4 material, denoted as CN-CO. The synthesis process involved subjecting the mixture to 500 °C for 10 h in a muffle furnace. Structural and morphological analyses confirmed the formation of CN-CO nanostructures, which exhibited remarkable enhancements in photocatalytic activity for the removal of methylene blue (MB) pollutants under replicated sunlight. After 90 min of exposure, the degradation rate reached an impressive 98.9%, surpassing the degradation rates of 62.3% for pure CN and 89.32% for pure Co3O4 during the same time period. This significant improvement can be attributed to the exceptional light captivation capabilities and efficient charge separation abilities of the CN-CO nanostructures. Furthermore, the CN-CO nanostructures demonstrated impressive photocurrent density-time (j-t) activity under sunlight, with a photocurrent density of 2.51 μA/cm2 at 0.5 V. The CN-CO nanostructure exhibited excellent methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) activity with the highest current density of 83.71 mA/cm2 at an optimal 2 M methanol concentration, benefiting from the synergy effects of CN and CO in the nanostructure. Overall, this study presents a straightforward and effective method for producing CN-based photocatalysts decorated with semiconductor nanosized materials. The outcomes of this research shed light on the design of nanostructures for energy-related applications, while also providing insights into the development of efficient photocatalytic materials for addressing environmental challenges.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Fe-Doped Cadmium Oxide Showed Bactericidal Behavior and Highly Efficient Visible Light Photocatalysis

Cationic dyes present in industrial effluents significantly reduce the effectiveness of remediation operations. Considering the terrible impact of these pollutants on environment and biodiversity, investigating strategies to remove potentially harmful compounds from water is becoming an increasingly intriguing issue. In this work, we employed a simple hydrothermal technique to synthesize Fe-doped CdO (2, 4, and 6 wt %) nanostructures and assessed their efficacy in degrading methylene blue (MB) dye and inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively. Structural, morphological, and optical characterization of produced nanomaterials was also performed using X-ray diffraction, TEM, and UV absorption spectra. The photocatalytic decomposition of MB was significantly enhanced (58.8%) by using Fe (6 wt %)-doped CdO catalysts for 80 min under irradiation. In addition, 2.05-5.05 mm inhibitory zones were seen against Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus), whereas the range for Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) was 1.65-2.75 mm. These nanostructures were shown to be very effective inhibitors of beta-lactamase, d-alanine-d-alanine ligase B, and fatty acid synthase inhibitor by in silico molecular docking investigations.

Facile synthesis of copolymerized cellulose grafted hydrogel doped calcium oxide nanocomposites with improved antioxidant activity for anti-arthritic and controlled release of doxorubicin for anti-cancer evaluation

The combination treatment is considered an approach to attaining synergistic impact while minimizing applied dosage. Hydrogels are analogous to the tissue environment attributed to hydrophilic and porous structure. Despite extensive study in biological and biotechnological domains, their restricted mechanical strength and limited functionalities impede their potential uses. Emerging strategies are centred on research and developing nanocomposite hydrogels to combat these issues. Herein, we prepared copolymerized hydrogel by grafting poly-acrylic acid P(AA) onto cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and adding CNC-g-PAA as dopant (2 and 4 wt%) in calcium oxide (CaO) nanoparticles to generate an effective hydrogel doped nanocomposite (NCH) (CNC-g-PAA/CaO) for biomedical applications such as anti-arthritic, anti-cancer, and antibacterial investigations alongside their comprehensive characterization. CNC-g-PAA/CaO (4 %), compared to other samples, had a substantially higher antioxidant potential (72.21 %). Doxorubicin, a potential chemotherapeutic drug, was then effectively loaded into NCH (99 %) via electrostatic interaction, and pH-triggered based release was found to be >57.9 % in 24 h. Furthermore, molecular docking investigation against targeted protein Cyclin-dependent kinase 2 and in vitro cytotoxicity study verified the improved antitumor effectiveness of CNC-g-PAA and CNC-g-PAA/CaO. These outcomes indicated that hydrogels might serve as potential delivery vehicles for innovative multifunctional biomedical applications.

Structural, optical, magnetic, and enhanced antibacterial properties of hydrothermally synthesized Sm-incorporating α-MoO3 2D-layered nanoplates

In this study, we have synthesized pristine and [0.5,1.5, and 2.5] M% samarium (Sm)-incorporating α-MoO3 2D-layered nanoplates utilizing a facile hydrothermal process, and investigated the physical properties along with antibacterial effectiveness. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed the single-phase, stable orthorhombic polycrystalline structure of the as-prepared samples. The crystallite size, lattice strain, and dislocation density were measured using both Debye-Scherrer (D-S) and Williamson-Hall (W-H) techniques. Both pristine and Sm-incorporating α-MoO3 samples showed two-dimensional (2D) layered nanoplate-type surface morphology, revealed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the presence of Sm contents in the α-MoO3 matrix. After Sm incorporation in α-MoO3, the different functional groups as well as vibrational groups were observed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy analyses, respectively. The optical band gaps were measured from UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) by employing the Kubelka-Munk formula and interestingly it is found that the bandgap energy (E g) gradually decreased from 2.96 to 2.83 eV with the increment of Sm content. When compared to pristine α-MoO3, the Sm-incorporating samples experienced a steady improvement in room temperature ferromagnetic (RTFM) behavior as Sm content increased, as measured by hysteresis loops. The antibacterial activities of both samples were assessed against Gram-positive: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Gram-negative: Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella enteritidis (S. enteritidis) bacteria by the agar well diffusion method and enhanced antibacterial activity was observed as the Sm concentration increased, compared to pristine nanoplates. The obtained results suggest that the synthesized Sm-incorporating α-MoO3 2D-layered nanoplate could be a potential antibacterial agent.

Valorization of spent double substituted Co-Ni-Zn-Fe LDH wastewater nanoadsorbent as methanol electro-oxidation catalyst

Finding suitable non-expensive electrocatalyst materials for methanol oxidation is a significant challenge. Waste valorization of spent wastewater nanoadsorbents is a promising route toward achieving circular economy guidelines. In this study, the residual of layered double hydroxide (LDH) can be used as an electrocatalyst in direct methanol fuel cells as a novel approach. The Co-Ni-Zn-Fe LDH was prepared by the co-precipitation method followed by the adsorption of methyl orange (MO). Moreover, the spent adsorbent was calcined at different temperatures (200, 400, and 600 °C) to be converted to the corresponding mixed metal oxides (MMO). The prepared samples were characterized using XRD, FTIR, HRTEM, zeta potential, and hydrodynamic size measurements. The spent adsorbent was tested as an electro-catalyst for direct methanol electro-oxidation. The spent LDH/MO adsorbent showed a maximum current density of 6.66 mA/cm² at a 50 mV/s scan rate and a 1 M methanol concentration. The spent MMO/MO adsorbent showed a maximum current density of 8.40 mA/cm² at a 200 °C calcination temperature, 50 mV/s scan rate, and a 3 M methanol concentration. Both samples show reasonable stability over time, as indicated by the chronoamperometric response. Further nanoengineering of used nanoadsorbents could be a promising path to repurposing these wastes as electro-oxidation catalysts.

Nb/Starch-Doped ZnO Nanostructures for Polluted Water Treatment and Antimicrobial Applications: Molecular Docking Analysis

Nb/starch-doped ZnO quantum dots (QDs) were prepared by a coprecipitation route. A fixed quantity of starch (st) and different concentrations (2 and 4%) of niobium (Nb) were doped in a ZnO lattice. To gain a better understanding of synthesized nanostructures, a systematic study was carried out utilizing several characterization methods. The goal of this research was to undertake methylene blue (MB) dye degradation with a synthetic material and also study its antibacterial properties. The phase structure, morphology, functional groups, optical properties, and elemental compositions of synthesized samples were investigated. Our study showed that ZnO QDs enhanced photocatalytic activity (PCA), resulting in effective MB degradation, in addition to showing good antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative relative to Gram-positive bacteria. Molecular docking study findings were in good agreement with the observed in vitro bactericidal potential and suggested ZnO, st-ZnO, and Nb/st-ZnO as possible inhibitors against dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR_E. coli) and DNA gyrase_E. coli.

Dual-emissive ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor based on multi-nanomaterials for Ag+ determination in lake water

In this study, a sensitive ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor was constructed using a facile one-pot method by encapsulating carbon dots (CDs) and cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) into the pore cavities of a metal-organic framework (ZIF-8). In this nanosensor (CD/CdTe QD@ZIF-8), the fluorescence attributed to CdTe QDs was quenched by silver ions (Ag⁺), and the fluorescence intensity of CDs did not change. The introduction of ZIF-8 into the system can not only adsorb Ag⁺ but also easily separate CDs and CdTe QDs from the matrix. The developed CD/CdTe QD@ZIF-8 composite used as a ratiometric fluorescent probe exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards Ag⁺. The working linear range was 0.1-20 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.49 nM. Finally, the proposed nanosensor was applied to determine Ag⁺ in lake water with satisfactory results.

Improved catalytic activity and bactericidal behavior of novel chitosan/V2O5 co-doped in tin-oxide quantum dots

The novel V2O5/chitosan (CS) co-doped tin oxide (SnO2) quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized via co-precipitation technique. The optical, structural, morphological, and catalytic properties of the concerned specimens were examined by UV-Vis, PL, FTIR, X-ray diffraction, HR-TEM, and EDS. Structural analysis through XRD confirmed the tetragonal structure of SnO2; meanwhile, HR-TEM measurements unveiled quantum dot morphology. Rotational and vibrational modes related to functional groups of (O-H, C-H, Sn-O, and Sn-O-Sn) have been assessed with FTIR spectra. Through UV-Vis spectroscopy, a reduction in band-gap (4.39 eV to 3.98 eV) and redshift in co-doped spectra of SnO2 were identified. Both CS/SnO2 and V2O5-doped CS@SnO2 showed promising catalytic activity in all media. Meanwhile, CS/SnO2 showed higher activity for use in hospital and industrial dye degradation in comparison to dopant-free Ch/SnO2. For V2O5/CS@ SnO2 QDs, inhibition domains of G -ve were significantly confirmed as 1.40-4.15 mm and 1.85-5.45 mm; meanwhile, for G +ve were noticed as 2.05-4.15 mm and 2.40-5.35 mm at least and maximum concentrations, correspondingly. These findings demonstrate the efficient role of V2O5/CS@SnO2 QDs towards industrial dye degradation and antimicrobial activity.

Novel Ta/chitosan-doped CuO nanorods for catalytic purification of industrial wastewater and antimicrobial applications

Novel tantalum (Ta) and chitosan (CS)-doped CuO nanorods (NRs) were synthesized using a single step co-precipitation route. Different concentrations (2 and 4%) of Ta were used in fixed amounts of CS and CuO to examine their catalytic activity and antimicrobial potential. For critical analysis, synthesized NRs were systematically examined using XRD, FTIR HRTEM, EDS, UV-Vis and PL spectroscopy. The XRD technique revealed the monoclinic structure of CuO while an increase in its crystallite size (from 15.5 to 18.5 nm) was observed upon doping. FTIR spectra were examined to study the functional groups of CuO where peaks at 514 cm-1 and 603 cm-1 confirmed the formation of CuO NRs. PL spectra depicted the charge transfer efficiency of the synthesized samples. The presence of dopants (Ta and CS) and constituent elements (Cu, O) was detected using EDS spectra. Additionally, the pH based catalytic performance of fabricated NRs revealed 99.7% dye degradation of toxic methylene blue (MB) dye in neutral media, 99.4% in basic media and 99.5% in acidic media along with promising antibacterial activities for Gram negative/positive bacteria, respectively upon doping of Ta (4%) into CS/CuO. The adsorption energies of CuO co-doped with CS/Ta led to the creation of stable structures that were investigated theoretically using density functional theory.

In-silico predicting as a tool to develop plant-based biomedicines and nanoparticles: Lycium shawii metabolites

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE

In silico approach helps develop biomedicines and is useful for exploring the pharmacology of potential therapeutics using computer-simulated models. In vitro assays were used to determine the anti-microbial and cytotoxic efficacies of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized with the shrub Lycium shawii.

METHODS

In silico predicting was performed to assess the L. shawii metabolites identified using QTOF-LCMS for their pharmacological properties. L. shawii mediated AgNPs were synthesized and characterized (FTIR, TEM, SEM, DLS and EDX). The anti-bacterial efficacies of L. shawii extract, AgNPs, and penicillin-conjugated AgNPs (pen-AgNPs) were determined. The cytotoxicity of the AgNPs was measured against colorectal cancer cell line (HCT116), normal breast epithelium (MCF 10 A), and breast cancer cell line (MDA MB 231).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Five molecules (costunolide, catechin, emodin, lyciumaside, and aloe emodin 11-O-rhamnoside) were detected in the L. shawii extract. AgNPs (69 nm) were spherical with crystallographic structure. All three agents prepared showed inhibitory activity against the tested bacteria, the most efficacious being pen-AgNPs. High cytotoxicity of AgNPs (IC₅₀ 62 μg/ml) was observed against HCT116, IC₅₀ was 78 μg/ml for MCF 10 A, and 250 μg/ml for MDA MB 231, of which cells showed apoptotic features under TEM examination. The in silico approach indicated that the carbonic anhydrase IX enzyme was the target molecule mediating anti-cancer and anti-bacterial activities and that emodin was the metabolite in action.

CONCLUSIONS

Combining in vitro studies and in silico molecular target prediction helps find novel therapeutic agents. Among L. shawii metabolites, emodin is suggested for further studies as an agent for drug development against pathogenic bacteria and cancer.

Thiosemicarbazide functionalized carbon quantum dots as a fluorescent probe for the determination of some oxicams: application to dosage forms and biological fluids

In this study, highly fluorescent water-soluble nitrogen and sulfur doped carbon quantum dots (N, S-CQDs) were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal process utilizing citric acid as a carbon source and thiosemicarbazide as a sulfur and nitrogen source. The obtained N, S-CQDs exhibited an intense emission band at 415 nm (λ ex = 345 nm). In the presence of either piroxicam, tenoxicam or lornoxicam, the emission band at 415 nm was significantly quenched which might be triggered due to destruction of the surface passivation layer of the N, S-CQDs. A linear correlation was found between the reduction in the fluorescence intensity of N, S-CQDs and the concentration of each drug in the ranges of 2.0-25.0 μM, 10.0-100.0 μM and 20.0-200.0 μM with correlation coefficients of more than 0.999 for all drugs. The detection limits were 0.49 μM, 1.58 μM and 4.63 μM for piroxicam, tenoxicam and lornoxicam, respectively. The effect of experimental parameters affecting the performance of the method was investigated and optimized. The developed sensor has the advantages of simplicity, time-saving, convenience and satisfactory selectivity for determination of the studied drugs in dosage forms with high % recoveries (98.86-101.69%). The method was extended for determination of piroxicam in spiked plasma with % recoveries ranging from 97.95-101.36%. The method was validated in accordance with International Council of Harmonization (ICH) standards, and the results obtained were compared statistically to those given by reported methods, indicating no significant differences in the level of accuracy and precision. The mechanism of the quenching process was studied and elucidated. The structure-activity relationship between the three drugs and the quenching efficiency was also studied and discussed.

Toward efficient dye degradation and the bactericidal behavior of Mo-doped La2O3 nanostructures

In this study, different concentrations (0, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.06 wt%) of Mo doped onto La2O3 nanostructures were synthesized using a one-pot co-precipitation process. The aim was to study the ability of Mo-doped La2O3 samples to degrade toxic methylene blue dye in different pH media. The bactericidal potential of synthesized samples was also investigated. The structural properties of prepared samples were examined by XRD. The observed XRD spectrum of La2O3 showed a cubic and hexagonal structure, while no change was recorded in Mo-doped La2O3 samples. Doping with Mo improved the crystallinity of the samples. UV-Vis spectrophotometry and density functional theory calculations were used to assess the optical characteristics of Mo-La2O3. The band gap energy was reduced while the absorption spectra showed prominent peaks due to Mo doping. The HR-TEM results revealed the rod-like morphology of La2O3. The rod-like network appeared to become dense upon doping.
