Graphene oxide-chitosan hydrogel for adsorptive removal of diclofenac from aqueous solution: preparation, characterization, kinetic and thermodynamic modelling

Synthesis of recyclable and light-weight graphene oxide/chitosan/genipin sponges for the adsorption of diclofenac, triclosan, and microplastics

Emerging micropollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and microplastics (MPs), have become a pressing water environmental concern. The aim of this study is to synthesize chitosan sponges using graphene oxide (GO) and genipin (GP) for the removal of pharmaceuticals (diclofenac (DCF) and triclosan (TCS)) and MPs, verify their adsorption mechanisms, evaluate the effects of temperature, pH, and salinity on their adsorption capacities, and determine their reusability. The GO5/CS/GP sponge exhibited a macroporous nature (porosity = 95%, density = 32.6 mg/cm3). GO and cross-linker GP enhanced the adsorption of DCF, TCS, and polystyrene (PS) MPs onto the CS sponges. The adsorption of DCF, TCS, and PS MPs involved multiple steps: surface diffusion and pore diffusion of the sponge. The adsorption isotherms demonstrated that Langmuir model was the most fitted well model to explain adsorption of TCS (qm = 7.08 mg/g) and PS MPs (qm = 7.42 mg/g) on GO5/CS/GP sponge, while Freundlich model suited for DCF adsorption (qm = 48.58 mg/g). DCF adsorption was thermodynamically spontaneous and endothermic; however, the adsorption of TCS and PS MPs was exothermic (283-313 K). The optimal pH was 5.5-7 due to the surface charge of the GO5/CS/GP sponge (pHzpc = 5.76) and ionization of DCF, TCS, and PS MPs. As the salinity increased, DCF removal efficiency drastically decreased due to the weakening of electrostatic interactions; however, TCS removal efficiency remained stable because TCS adsorption was mainly caused by hydrophobic and π-π interactions rather than electrostatic interaction. The removal of PS MPs was enhanced by the electrostatic screening effects of high Na+ ions. PS nanoplastics (average size = 26 nm) were removed by the GO5/CS/GP sponge at a rate of 73.0%, which was better than that of PS MPs (41.5%). In addition, the GO5/CS/GP sponge could be recycled over five adsorption-desorption cycles.

Removal of emergent pollutants: A review on recent updates and future perspectives on polysaccharide-based composites vis-à-vis traditional adsorbents

There is a growing incidence in the presence of emergent pollutants like the pesticides and pharmaceuticals in water bodies. The matter of environmental concern is their synthetic and persistent nature which has resulted in induced toxicity/damaging effect to the vital functioning of the different organs in the aquatic community. Traditional adsorbents have exhibited limitations like low stability and minimum reuse ability. Composites of such adsorbents with polysaccharides have demonstrated distinct features like improved surface area, porosity, adsorptivity; improved reusability and structural integrity; improved mechanical strength, thermal stability when applied for the removal of the emergent pollutants. The biocompatibility and biodegradability of such fabricated composites is established; thereby making the water treatment process cost effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly. The present review has dealt with an in-depth, up-dated literature compilation of traditional as well as polysaccharide based composite adsorbents and addressed their performance evaluation for the removal of pharmaceuticals and pesticides from wastewater. A comparative study has revealed the merits of polysaccharide based composites and discussions have been made with a focus on future research directions in the related area.

Wound healing potential of silver nanoparticles embedded in optimized bio-inspired hybridized chitosan soft and dry hydrogel

Interactive wound dressings combining healing and antimicrobial potentials, besides ensuring patient compliance with a recognized wound care service gained considerable interest recently. Both hydrogel spray dried microparticles (HMP) and soft hydrogel (G) were prepared. The bio-inspired combinatory platform included natural bio-macromolecules namely: chitosan (CS) and collagen (COL) with wound healing enhancement and connective tissue building capabilities cross linked with the natural genipin (GN) to build a three dimensional structured matrix. The optimized plain hydrogel obtained by a box behnken design (BBD) program (G) scored maximum swelling and porosity. The network was hosted with green synthesized cefotaxime sodium (cef.Na) AgNPs reduced by the anabolic folic acid (FA). Both hydrogels exhibited good antimicrobial activity against gram +ve and -ve bacteria. The wound healing activity, evaluated in injured rats, showed >98 % and complete wound closure after two and three weeks respectively. Oxidative stress minimization was proved by the estimation of biochemical markers malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels at the wound site.

A systematic review of photocatalytic degradation of humic acid in aqueous solution using nanoparticles

OBJECTIVES

Humic acid (HA) compounds in the disinfection processes of drinking water and wastewater are considered as precursors of highly toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic disinfectant by-products. The aim of this study was to systematically review all research studies on the photocatalytic degradation of humic acid and to evaluate the laboratory conditions and results of these studies.

CONTENT

The present systematic review was performed by searching the Scopus, PubMed, and web of science databases until December 2021. The parameters of type of catalyst, catalyst size, optimum pH, optimum initial concentration of humic Acid, optimum catalyst concentration, optimum time, light used and removal efficiency were investigated.

SUMMARY

395 studies were screened and using the inclusion and exclusion criteria, in total, 20 studies met our inclusion criteria and provided the information necessary to Photocatalytic degradation of humic acid by nanoparticles. In the investigated studies, the percentage of photocatalytic degradation of humic acid by nanoparticles was reported to be above 70%, and in some studies, the removal efficiency had reached 100%.

OUTLOOK

From the results of this systematic review, it was concluded that the photocatalytic process using nanoparticles has a high effect on the degradation of humic acid.

Chitosan Hydrogels for Water Purification Applications

Chitosan-based hydrogels have gained significant attention for their potential applications in water treatment and purification due to their remarkable properties such as bioavailability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, environmental friendliness, high pollutants adsorption capacity, and water adsorption capacity. This article comprehensively reviews recent advances in chitosan-based hydrogel materials for water purification applications. The synthesis methods, structural properties, and water purification performance of chitosan-based hydrogels are critically analyzed. The incorporation of various nanomaterials into chitosan-based hydrogels, such as nanoparticles, graphene, and metal-organic frameworks, has been explored to enhance their performance. The mechanisms of water purification, including adsorption, filtration, and antimicrobial activity, are also discussed in detail. The potential of chitosan-based hydrogels for the removal of pollutants, such as heavy metals, organic contaminants, and microorganisms, from water sources is highlighted. Moreover, the challenges and future perspectives of chitosan-based hydrogels in water treatment and water purification applications are also illustrated. Overall, this article provides valuable insights into the current state of the art regarding chitosan-based hydrogels for water purification applications and highlights their potential for addressing global water pollution challenges.

Removal of diclofenac by adsorption process studied in free-base porphyrin Zr-metal organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs)

As the world population continues to grow, there is also a rising concern regarding water pollution since this condition could negatively impact the supply of clean water. One of the most recent concerns is related to the pollution that comes from various pharmaceuticals, in particular non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) since they have been industrially produced at large scale and can be easily purchased as an over-the-counter medicine. Diclofenac is one of the most popular NSAIDs because of its high-effectiveness, which leads to its excessive consumption. Consequently, its presence in water bodies is also continuously increasing. An adsorption process could then be employed as a highly effective method to address this issue. In comparison to other conventional adsorbents such as activated carbon, the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an alternative adsorbent is very attractive since it can offer various advantages such as tailorability and high adsorption capacity. In this study, the performance of three water-stable, free-base porphyrin MOFs assembled using zirconia-based nodes, namely MOF-525, MOF-545, and NU-902, for diclofenac adsorption was thoroughly investigated. Interestingly, although all three free-base porphyrin MOFs are assembled using the same building block and have a similar specific surface area (based on the experimental argon physisorption and calculation based on non-localized density functional theory), their diclofenac adsorption capacity is substantially different from one another. It is found that the highest diclofenac adsorption capacity is shown by MOF-525, which has maximum capacity around 792 mg g^-1. This is then followed by MOF-545 and NU-902 that have adsorption capacities around 591 and 486 mg g^-1, respectively. Some possible adsorption mechanisms are then thoroughly discussed that might contribute to this phenomenon. Lastly, their performance is also compared with other MOFs that are also studied for this purpose to show their performance superiority not only in terms of adsorption capacity but also their affinity towards the diclofenac molecule, which might be useful as an adsorption performance indicator in the real condition where the contaminant concentration is considerably low.

Preparation of multifunctional hydrogels with accessible isothiouronium groups via radical cross-linking copolymerization

Hydrogels can be equipped with functional groups for specific purposes. Isothiouronium groups can enhance adsorptivity, or allow coupling of other functional groups through mild reactions after transformation to thiol groups. Here we present a method to prepare multifunctional hydrogels by introducing isothiouronium groups into poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels, and convert them into thiol-functionalized hydrogels by the reduction of the isothiouronium groups. For this purpose, the amphiphilic monomer 2-(11-(acryloyloxy)-undecyl)isothiouronium bromide (AUITB), containing an isothiouronium group, was synthesized and copolymerized with PEGDA. In this convenient way, it was possible to incorporate up to 3 wt% AUITB into the hydrogels without changing their equilibrium swelling degree. The successful functionalization was demonstrated by surface analysis of the hydrogels with water contact angle measurements and increased isoelectric points of the hydrogel surfaces from 4.5 to 9.0 due to the presence of the isothiouronium groups. The hydrogels showed a suitability as an adsorbent, as exemplified by the pronounced adsorption of the anionic drug diclofenac. The potential of the functionalization for (bio)conjugation reactions was demonstrated by the reduction of isothiouronium groups to thiols and subsequent immobilization of the functional enzyme horseradish peroxidase on the hydrogels. The results show that fully accessible isothiouronium groups can be introduced into radically cross-linked hydrogels.

Green Synthesis of Hydrogel-Based Adsorbent Material for the Effective Removal of Diclofenac Sodium from Wastewater

The removal of pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater has gained considerable attention in recent years, particularly in the advancements of hydrogel-based adsorbents as a green solution for their ease of use, ease of modification, biodegradability, non-toxicity, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. This study focuses on the design of an efficient adsorbent hydrogel based on 1% chitosan, 40% polyethylene glycol 4000 (PEG4000), and 4% xanthan gum (referred to as CPX) for the removal of diclofenac sodium (DCF) from water. The interaction between positively charged chitosan and negatively charged xanthan gum and PEG4000 leads to strengthening of the hydrogel structure. The obtained CPX hydrogel, prepared by a green, simple, easy, low-cost, and ecological method, has a higher viscosity due to the three-dimensional polymer network and mechanical stability. The physical, chemical, rheological, and pharmacotechnical parameters of the synthesized hydrogel were determined. Swelling analysis demonstrated that the new synthetized hydrogel is not pH-dependent. The obtained adsorbent hydrogel reached the adsorption capacity (172.41 mg/g) at the highest adsorbent amount (200 mg) after 350 min. In addition, the adsorption kinetics were calculated using a pseudo first-order model and Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm parameters. The results demonstrate that CPX hydrogel can be used as an efficient option to remove DCF as a pharmaceutical contaminant from wastewater.

The antimicrobial efficacy of nanographene oxide and double antibiotic paste per se and in combination: part II

BACKGROUND

Finding strategies to overcome the rising trends of antimicrobial resistance against currently available antimicrobial agents has become increasingly relevant. Graphene oxide has recently emerged as a promising material due to its outstanding physicochemical and biological properties. This study aimed to validate previous data on the antibacterial activity of nanographene oxide (nGO), double antibiotic paste (DAP), and their combination (nGO-DAP).

METHODS

The antibacterial evaluation was performed against a wide range of microbial pathogens. Synthesis of nGO was achieved using a modified Hummers' method, and loading it with ciprofloxacin and metronidazole resulted in nGO-DAP. The microdilution method was utilized to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of nGO, DAP, and nGO-DAP against two gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus and E. faecalis), two gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, and S. typhi), and an opportunistic pathogenic yeast (C. albicans). Statistical analysis was conducted using one-sample t-test and one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

All three antimicrobial agents significantly increased the killing percent of microbial pathogens compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the synthesized nGO-DAP exhibited higher antimicrobial activity than nGO and DAP per se.

CONCLUSION

The novel synthesized nGO-DAP can be used as an effective antimicrobial nanomaterial for use in dental, biomedical, and pharmaceutical fields against a range of microbial pathogens, including gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, as well as yeasts.

Preparation of carnation-like Ag-ZnO composites for enhanced photocatalysis under visible light

Carnation-like ZnO was synthesized by the facile precipitation method (at room temperature and in 120 min) to decompose dyes in an aqueous medium. The carnation-like ZnO had a stratified porous structure with a size of about 2-3μm, its petals had a smooth surface with a thickness of 5-10 nm and a width of about 300-500 nm. Ag-ZnO composites were synthesized using glucose with the assistance of PVP. The morphology of Ag-ZnO composites was almost unchanged compared to ZnO. Where, the Ag nanoparticles in the size range of 5-15 nm were uniformly dispersed on the ZnO petals, improving the catalytic ability of the composites in tartrazine (TA) degradation. The influence of Ag content on catalytic structure and performance of composite was studied. The 5Ag-ZnO sample had the highest BET surface area and pore volume and the lowest gap energy (Eg) among the as-synthesized samples. The 5Ag-ZnO sample proclaimed the degradation efficiency in 70 min of 97.8% and thek_apof 0.031 min^-1. The influences of catalyst content, solution pH, and concentration of dye on the photodegradation efficiency of the composite were thoroughly studied. Besides, the photocatalytic activity of the composite was demonstrated by degrading various organic substances and reusability. In addition, it was compared to a metal-semiconductor catalyst of Au-ZnO and semiconductor-semiconductor catalysts of MoS₂-ZnO, Cu₂O-ZnO, and SiO₂-ZnO. The catalytic mechanism under visible light was proposed.

Recent Advances in Chitosan-Based Applications-A Review

Chitosan derived from chitin gas gathered much interest as a biopolymer due to its known and possible broad applications. Chitin is a nitrogen-enriched polymer abundantly present in the exoskeletons of arthropods, cell walls of fungi, green algae, and microorganisms, radulae and beaks of molluscs and cephalopods, etc. Chitosan is a promising candidate for a wide variety of applications due to its macromolecular structure and its unique biological and physiological properties, including solubility, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and reactivity. Chitosan and its derivatives have been known to be applicable in medicine, pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, agriculture, the textile and paper industries, the energy industry, and industrial sustainability. More specifically, their use in drug delivery, dentistry, ophthalmology, wound dressing, cell encapsulation, bioimaging, tissue engineering, food packaging, gelling and coating, food additives and preservatives, active biopolymeric nanofilms, nutraceuticals, skin and hair care, preventing abiotic stress in flora, increasing water availability in plants, controlled release fertilizers, dye-sensitised solar cells, wastewater and sludge treatment, and metal extraction. The merits and demerits associated with the use of chitosan derivatives in the above applications are elucidated, and finally, the key challenges and future perspectives are discussed in detail.

The antimicrobial efficacy of graphene oxide, double antibiotic paste, and their combination against Enterococcus faecalis in the root canal treatment

BACKGROUND

Inter-appointment medication of the root canals with appropriate intracanal medicaments has been advocated to improve root canal disinfection. Graphene oxide (GO) has shown promising antimicrobial activity against a wide range of microorganisms, besides the capability of carrying antibiotics. The current study aimed to compare the antibacterial activity of double antibiotic paste (DAP) and GO per se and in combination (GO-DAP) against Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis).

METHODS

A total of 108 extracted human mandibular premolars were contaminated with three-week-old E. faecalis and subjected to a primary microbial assessment. The samples were categorized into 15 groups concerning the intracanal medicament (DAP, GO, GO-DAP, and control) and contact time (1, 7, and 14 days). Then, the root canals were medicated, incubated, and resubjected to a secondary antimicrobial evaluation. The colony-forming units (CFU) were counted to calculate the antimicrobial efficacy. The data were analyzed via the Kruskal-Wallis test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

GO-DAP was the only medicament that completely eradicated E. faecalis in 1 day. The percentage reduction of CFU/ml in the GO-DAP and DAP groups was higher than that in the GO group at all allocated contact times. Furthermore, a significant decrease of the CFU/ml was seen in the GO and DAP groups after 7 and 14 days of being medicated (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Since GO-DAP improved root canal disinfection, this novel material can be introduced as a promising intracanal medicament against E. faecalis even in the short run.

Update on Chitosan-Based Hydrogels: Preparation, Characterization, and Its Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Applications

Chitosan is a prominent biopolymer in research for of its physicochemical properties and uses. Each year, the number of publications based on chitosan and its derivatives increases. Because of its comprehensive biological properties, including antibacterial, antioxidant, and tissue regeneration activities, chitosan and its derivatives can be used to prevent and treat soft tissue diseases. Furthermore, chitosan can be employed as a nanocarrier for therapeutic drug delivery. In this review, we will first discuss chitosan and chitosan-based hydrogel polymers. The structure, functionality, and physicochemical characteristics of chitosan-based hydrogels are addressed. Second, a variety of characterization approaches were used to analyze and validate the physicochemical characteristics of chitosan-based hydrogel materials. Finally, we discuss the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and antifungal uses of supramolecular chitosan-based hydrogels. This review study can be used as a base for future research into the production of various types of chitosan-based hydrogels in the antibacterial and antifungal fields.

Biochar-mediated removal of pharmaceutical compounds from aqueous matrices via adsorption

Pharmaceutical is one of the noteworthy classes of emerging contaminants. These biologically active compounds pose a range of deleterious impacts on human health and the environment. This is attributed to their refractory behavior, poor biodegradability, and pseudopersistent nature. Their large-scale production by pharmaceutical industries and subsequent widespread utilization in hospitals, community health centers, and veterinary facilities, among others, have significantly increased the occurrence of pharmaceutical residues in various environmental compartments. Several technologies are currently being evaluated to eliminate pharmaceutical compounds (PCs) from aqueous environments. Among them, adsorption appears as the most viable treatment option because of its operational simplicity and low cost. Intensive research and development efforts are, therefore, currently underway to develop inexpensive adsorbents for the effective abatement of PCs. Although numerous adsorbents have been investigated for the removal of PCs in recent years, biochar-based adsorbents have garnered tremendous scientific attention to eliminate PCs from aqueous matrices because of their decent specific surface area, tunable surface chemistry, scalable production, and environmentally benign nature. This review, therefore, attempts to provide an overview of the latest progress in the application of biochar for the removal of PCs from wastewater. Additionally, the fundamental knowledge gaps in the domain knowledge are identified and novel strategic research guidelines are laid out to make further advances in this promising approach towards sustainable development.

Critical role of tetracycline's self-promotion effects in its visible-light driven photocatalytic degradation over ZnO nanorods

Zinc oxide (ZnO), which is widely applied for ultraviolet-light driven photocatalysis, has no activity in visible-light photocatalytic process due to its large band gap of ∼3.2 eV. Herein, however, we demonstrated the multiple self-promotion effects of tetracycline as band adjuster, photo-sensitizer, and charge transfer promoter for ZnO nanorods, realizing its visible-light photocatalytic degradation with an excellent removal efficiency up to 91.1% within only 2 h. Besides, the influence of complex realistic factors on this unique process was evaluated together with tests with realistic water matrices. Furthermore, the active species and degradation products were identified. Both acute and developmental toxicities were found to be reduced as the degradation proceeds. These results pave the path for the brand-new self-driven visible-light photocatalysis.

Visible-light-induced photocatalytic response of easily recoverable Mn2O3/SiO2 monolith in centimeter-scale towards degradation of ofloxacin: Performance evaluation and product analysis

Monolithic-photocatalysts being easily recoverable are a suitable alternative to powdered materials for pollutant treatment. This study was conducted to prepare Mn₂O₃/SiO₂ monoliths by wet-impregnating Mn(NO₃)₂^․4H₂O in SiO₂ monoliths. The crystallinity of oxide was affirmed via XRD analyses, whereas EDS and elemental-mapping, and XPS studies revealed the constituent elements and their oxidation states. FESEM images confirmed porous morphology, while BET-analysis confirmed its mesoporous nature (∼8.44 nm) and enormous surface area (∼241 m²/g). The DRS and PL studies disclosed that Mn₂O₃/SiO₂ monoliths consisted of narrow band-gap of ∼2.14 eV and had suitable electron/hole separation. The photocatalytic effectiveness of the monolith had been checked by degrading model dye methylene blue (MB) and antibiotic ofloxacin (OF). The influence of various reaction parameters for degradation, i.e., monolith dose, solution-pH, illumination-area, scavengers, etc., was noted. At optimal reaction conditions, outstanding competence was achieved for MB (95.23%; 0.0225 min^-1) and decent results were obtained for OF-degradation (73.2%; 0.0096 min^-1). The recyclable nature of the catalyst (∼12.7%-reduction in effectiveness after 10 successive cycles) was vindicated by several characterization studies after reusability. The O₂^•-radicals participated majorly in the degradation reaction. The reaction intermediates plus products, generated after the degradation of had been identified via LC/MS study. The mineralization extent of the OF and MB was also gauged through TOC analyses. The photocatalytic treatment of raw textile wastewater manifested ∼57.8% COD and 53% TOC-removal. This study emphasizes the competence of Mn₂O₃/SiO₂ monoliths for the photocatalytic abatement of refractory organic contaminants.

Impact of reaction parameters for photodegradation pharmaceuticals in wastewater over gold/titania photocatalyst synthesized by pyrolysis of NH2-MIL-125(Ti)

The efficient remediation of pharmaceuticals, including wastewater, remains a remarkably challenging issue for water regeneration. Herein, porous Au/TiO₂ synthesized by pyrolysis of NH₂-MIL-125(Ti) was utilized to be an efficient photocatalyst for mineralization of trimethoprim (TMP) and Metronidazole (MNZ) as the parent compound. The effects of different factors, including TMP and MNZ concentrations, light intensity, H₂O₂ concentration, Au/TiO₂ dosage, and pH value of reaction solution on the degradation and mineralization performances during UV and visible light (VIS), were addressed. The porous Au/TiO₂ photocatalyst exhibited superior photocatalytic degradation of TMP and MNZ under UV and VIS illumination. The optimum pH values were 4; the optimum dosage of Au/TiO₂ was 1.5 g/L, H₂O₂ concentration was 9.8 mM, TMP and MNZ concentrations was 10 ppm, and their photodegradation efficiency was 100% after 30 min illumination time and mineralization efficiency 98.2% after 3 h illumination for TMP and MNZ, respectively under UV illumination, however, the photodegradation efficiency was 100% after 50 min illumination and mineralization efficiency 96.3% after 4.5 h illumination time for TMP and MNZ, respectively under VIS illumination. The real wastewater matrix with 10 mg/L of TMP and MNZ were subjected to 60 min of illumination under similar optimum conditions of synthetic solution. The results indicated that photodegradation efficiency was determined to be 100% after 70 min illumination time for removal of both TMP (k = 3.4 × 10^-2 min^-1) and MNZ (k = 2.87 × 10^-2 min^-1). This is ascribed to the incorporation of Au NPs onto TiO_2, reducing the photoinduced electron-hole recombination, thus promoting the photocatalytic performance. The possible mechanism for photodegradation of antibiotics was also discussed. The demonstration of photocatalysis mechanism over Au/TiO₂ photocatalyst can provide some directing in the enhancement of novel photocatalysts based on MOFs doped by noble metal.

Progress in microalgal mediated bioremediation systems for the removal of antibiotics and pharmaceuticals from wastewater

Worldwide demand for antibiotics and pharmaceutical products is continuously increasing for the control of disease and improvement of human health. Poor management and partial metabolism of these compounds result in the pollution of aquatic systems, leading to hazardous effects on flora, fauna, and ecosystems. In the past decade, the importance of microalgae in micropollutant removal has been widely reported. Microalgal systems are advantageous as their cultivation does not require additional nutrients: they can recover resources from wastewater and degrade antibiotics and pharmaceutical pollutants simultaneously. Bioadsorption, degradation, and accumulation are the main mechanisms involved in pollutant removal by microalgae. Integration of microalgae-mediated pollutant removal with other technologies, such as biodiesel, biochemical, and bioelectricity production, can make this technology more economical and efficient. This article summarizes the current scenario of antibiotic and pharmaceutical removal from wastewater using microalgae-mediated technologies.

Towards Predicting the Onset of Elastic Turbulence in Complex Geometries

Abstract

Flow of complex fluids in porous structures is pertinent in many biological and industrial processes. For these applications, elastic turbulence, a viscoelastic instability occurring at low Re—arising from a non-trivial coupling of fluid rheology and flow geometry—is a common and relevant effect because of significant over-proportional increase in pressure drop and spatio-temporal distortion of the flow field. Therefore, significant efforts have been made to predict the onset of elastic turbulence in flow geometries with constrictions. The onset of flow perturbations to fluid streamlines is not adequately captured by Deborah and Weissenberg numbers. The introduction of more complex dimensionless numbers such as the M-criterion, which was meant as a simple and pragmatic method to predict the onset of elastic instabilities as an order-of-magnitude estimate, has been successful for simpler geometries. However, for more complex geometries which are encountered in many relevant applications, sometimes discrepancies between experimental observation and M-criteria prediction have been encountered. So far these discrepancies have been mainly attributed to the emergence from disorder. In this experimental study, we employ a single channel with multiple constrictions at varying distance and aspect ratios. We show that adjacent constrictions can interact via non-laminar flow field instabilities caused by a combination of individual geometry and viscoelastic rheology depending (besides other factors) explicitly on the distance between adjacent constrictions. This provides intuitive insight on a more conceptual level why the M-criteria predictions are not more precise. Our findings suggest that coupling of rheological effects and fluid geometry is more complex and implicit and controlled by more length scales than are currently employed. For translating bulk fluid, rheology determined by classical rheometry into the effective behaviour in complex porous geometries requires consideration of more than only one repeat element. Our findings open the path towards more accurate prediction of the onset of elastic turbulence, which many applications will benefit.

Synthesis and Characterization of New Catalysts Grains Based on Iron(Oxy)Hydroxides supported on Zirconium for the Degradation of 4-Nitrophenol in Aqueous Solution

This study reports the preparation of catalyst grains based on oxyhydroxides of iron and zirconium via the coprecipitation method and their application in the degradation of 4-nitrophenol. The morphology, microstructure, and surface composition of these catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physisorption, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The catalytic activity of the grains was assessed in the degradation of 4-nitrophenol in a heterogeneous system at different operating conditions. Degradation rates up to 93% were obtained after 4 h of contact time where the catalytic activity of tested materials was higher at pH 7 than in acidic and basic conditions. Amorphous iron hydroxide with a ratio of 75% Zr+25%Fe showed the best catalytic properties. These novel materials are an interesting alternative for facing the water pollution caused by organic compounds.

Synthesis and characterization of pristine and strontium-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles for methyl green photo-degradation application

Herein we describe an effective route for the degradation of methyl green (MG) dye under visible light illumination by pristine and strontium (Sr)-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) photocatalysts (synthesized by the simple chemical precipitation method). The x-ray diffraction structural analysis has confirmed that both photocatalysts exhibit the hexagonal wurtzite structure; without any additional phase formation in Sr-doped ZnO, in particular. The optical properties of the synthesized photocatalysts have been investigated using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy in the wavelength range of 250-800 nm. Through Tauc's plot, the slight decrease from 3.3 to 3.2 eV in band gap energy has been elucidated (in the case of Sr-doped ZnO), which has been further confirmed by the quenching in the intensity of Photoluminescence (PL) emission spectrum. This may be due to sub-band level formation between valence and conduction band, caused by the impregnation of Sr²⁺ions into ZnO host. The morphological study has also been performed using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope, which indicates nanoparticles (NPs) based surface texture for both photocatalysts. During the photocatalytic activity study, after 30 min irradiation of visible light, ∼65.7% and ∼84.8% photocatalytic degradation of MG dye has been achieved for pristine and Sr-doped (2 wt%) ZnO photocatalysts, respectively. The rate of photocatalytic reaction (K) has been observed to be ∼0.06399 min^-1for Sr-doped (2 wt%), whereas nearly half magnitude ∼0.03403 min^-1has been observed for pristine ZnO, respectively. The significantly improved photodegradation activity may be ascribed to the relatively broader optical absorption capability, surface defects and the enhanced charge separation efficiency of the Sr-doped ZnO photocatalyst.
