Centrifugal Inertia-Induced Directional Alignment of AgNW Network for Preparing Transparent Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Films with Joule Heating Ability

Transparent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding is highly desired in specific visual scenes, but the challenge remains in balancing their EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) and optical transmittance. Herein, this study proposed a directionally aligned silver nanowire (AgNW) network construction strategy to address the requirement of high EMI SE and satisfactory light transmittance using a rotation spraying technique. The orientation distribution of AgNW is induced by centrifugal inertia force generated by a high-speed rotating roller, which overcomes the issue of high contact resistance in random networks and achieves high conductivity even at low AgNW network density. Thus, the obtained transparent conductive film achieved a high light transmittance of 72.9% combined with a low sheet resistance of 4.5 Ω sq-1 and a desirable EMI SE value of 35.2 dB at X band, 38.9 dB in the K-band, with the highest SE of 43.4 dB at 20.4 GHz. Simultaneously, the excellent conductivity endowed the film with outstanding Joule heating performance and defogging/deicing ability, ensuring the visual transparency of windows when shielding electromagnetic waves. Hence, this research presents a highly effective strategy for constructing an aligned AgNW network, offering a promising solution for enhancing the performance of optical-electronic devices.

A Naturally Inspired Extrusion-Based Microfluidic Approach for Manufacturing Tailorable Magnetic Soft Continuum Microrobotic Devices

Soft materials play a crucial role in small-scale robotic applications by closely mimicking the complex motion and morphing behavior of organisms. However, conventional fabrication methods face challenges in creating highly integrated small-scale soft devices. In this study, microfluidics is leveraged to precisely control reaction-diffusion (RD) processes to generate multifunctional and compartmentalized calcium-cross-linkable alginate-based microfibers. Under RD conditions, sophisticated alginate-based fibers are produced for magnetic soft continuum robotics applications with customizable features, such as geometry (compact or hollow), degree of cross-linking, and the precise localization of magnetic nanoparticles (inside the core, surrounding the fiber, or on one side). This fine control allows for tuning the stiffness and magnetic responsiveness of the microfibers. Additionally, chemically cleavable regions within the fibers enable disassembly into smaller robotic units or roll-up structures under a rotating magnetic field. These findings demonstrate the versatility of microfluidics in processing highly integrated small-scale devices.

Orientation and stretching of supracolloidal chains of diblock copolymer micelles by spin-coating process

Supracolloidal chains consisting of nano- or micro-scale particles exhibit anisotropic properties not observed in individual particles. The orientation of the chains is necessary to manifest such characteristics on a macroscopic scale. In this study, we demonstrate the orientation of supracolloidal chains composed of nano-scale micelles of a diblock copolymer through spin-coating. We observed separate chains coated on a substrate with electron microscopy, and analyzed the orientation and stretching of the chains quantitatively with image analysis software. In drop-casting, the chains were coated randomly with no preferred orientation, and the degree of stretching exhibited an intrinsic semi-flexible nature. In contrast, spin-coated chains were aligned in the radial direction, and the apparent persistence length of the chain increased, confirming the stretching of the chain quantitatively. Furthermore, by incorporating fluorophores into supracolloidal chains and confirming the oriented chains with confocal fluorescence microscopy, it is demonstrated that oriented chains can be utilized as a template to align functional materials.

Bioinspired electrically stable, optically tunable thermal management electronic skin via interfacial self-assembly

The skin is the largest organ in the human body and serves vital functions such as sensation, thermal management, and protection. While electronic skin (E-skin) has made significant progress in sensory functions, achieving adaptive thermal management akin to human skin has remained a challenge. Drawing inspiration from squid skin, we have developed a hybrid electronic-photonic skin (hEP-skin) using an elastomer semi-embedded with aligned silver nanowires through interfacial self-assembly. With mechanically adjustable optical properties, the hEP-skin demonstrates adaptive thermal management abilities, warming in the range of +3.5°C for heat preservation and cooling in the range of -4.2°C for passive cooling. Furthermore, it exhibits an ultra-stable high electrical conductivity of ∼4.5×104 S/cm, even under stretching, bending or torsional deformations over 10,000 cycles. As a proof of demonstration, the hEP-skin successfully integrates stretchable light-emitting electronic skin with adaptive thermal management photonic skin.

Self-Assembled Monolayer and Nanoparticles Coenhanced Fragmented Silver Nanowire Network Memristor

Silver nanowire (AgNW) networks with self-assembled structures and synaptic connectivity have been recently reported for constructing neuromorphic memristors. However, resistive switching at the cross-point junctions of the network is unstable due to locally enhanced Joule heating and the Gibbs-Thomson effect, which poses an obstacle to the integration of threshold switching and memory function in the same AgNW memristor. Here, fragmented AgNW networks combined with Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) and mercapto self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are devised to construct memristors with stable threshold switching and memory behavior. In the above design, the planar gaps between NW segments are for resistive switching, the AgNPs act as metal islands in the gaps to reduce threshold voltage (Vth) and holding voltage (Vhold), and the SAMs suppress surface atom diffusion to avoid Oswald ripening of the AgNPs, which improves switching stability. The fragmented NW-NP/SAM memristors not only circumvent the side effects of conventional NW-stacked junctions to provide durable threshold switching at >Vth but also exhibit synaptic characteristics such as long-term potentiation at ultralow voltage (≪Vth). The combination of NW segments, nanoparticles, and SAMs blazes a new trail for integrating artificial neurons and synapses in AgNW network memristors.

Nanoparticle Assembly: From Self-Organization to Controlled Micropatterning for Enhanced Functionalities

Nanoparticles form long-range micropatterns via self-assembly or directed self-assembly with superior mechanical, electrical, optical, magnetic, chemical, and other functional properties for broad applications, such as structural supports, thermal exchangers, optoelectronics, microelectronics, and robotics. The precisely defined particle assembly at the nanoscale with simultaneously scalable patterning at the microscale is indispensable for enabling functionality and improving the performance of devices. This article provides a comprehensive review of nanoparticle assembly formed primarily via the balance of forces at the nanoscale (e.g., van der Waals, colloidal, capillary, convection, and chemical forces) and nanoparticle-template interactions (e.g., physical confinement, chemical functionalization, additive layer-upon-layer). The review commences with a general overview of nanoparticle self-assembly, with the state-of-the-art literature review and motivation. It subsequently reviews the recent progress in nanoparticle assembly without the presence of surface templates. Manufacturing techniques for surface template fabrication and their influence on nanoparticle assembly efficiency and effectiveness are then explored. The primary focus is the spatial organization and orientational preference of nanoparticles on non-templated and pre-templated surfaces in a controlled manner. Moreover, the article discusses broad applications of micropatterned surfaces, encompassing various fields. Finally, the review concludes with a summary of manufacturing methods, their limitations, and future trends in nanoparticle assembly.

Fabrication of Oriented Polycrystalline MOF Superstructures

The field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has progressed beyond the design and exploration of powdery and single-crystalline materials. A current challenge is the fabrication of organized superstructures that can harness the directional properties of the individual constituent MOF crystals. To date, the progress in the fabrication methods of polycrystalline MOF superstructures has led to close-packed structures with defined crystalline orientation. By controlling the crystalline orientation, the MOF pore channels of the constituent crystals can be aligned along specific directions: these systems possess anisotropic properties including enhanced diffusion along specific directions, preferential orientation of guest species, and protection of functional guests. In this perspective, we discuss the current status of MOF research in the fabrication of oriented polycrystalline superstructures focusing on the specific crystalline directions of orientation. Three methods are examined in detail: the assembly from colloidal MOF solutions, the use of external fields for the alignment of MOF particles, and the heteroepitaxial ceramic-to-MOF growth. This perspective aims at promoting the progress of this field of research and inspiring the development of new protocols for the preparation of MOF systems with oriented pore channels, to enable advanced MOF-based devices with anisotropic properties.

Formation of Self-Assembled Nanowires from Copper Nanoparticles Synthesized by the Electro-Explosion of Wires Technique-Study of the Time-Dependent Structural and Functional Evolution

We report here the formation of Cu nanowires (CuNWs) from Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs) by a self-assembly process. The CuNPs were synthesized by the electro-explosion of wire (EEW) technique that included nonequilibrium processes for the synthesis. Structural evolution in terms of aggregation or nanowire formation in the samples was observed when the CuNPs were kept for a month after synthesis in a glass vial without the application of any external driving force. The emergence of tangled CuNWs was noticed at the bottom of the vials only when no agitation or aeration was allowed. The nanowires were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Thermal oxidation of the nanowire samples implied that they could convert into rod-shaped structures. Loss of functionality was also observed in the hemoglobin precipitation study conducted to compare the activity of freshly prepared CuNPs and CuNWs. From the above observations, we conclude that the CuNP, after synthesis, possesses a huge amount of energy, and attainment of equilibrium occurs through either aggregation (clustering) or ordered self-assembly, depending on the conditions applied.

Dual-Functional Electrochromic Smart Window Using WO3·H2O-rGO Nanocomposite Ink Spray-Coated on a Low-Cost Hybrid Electrode

Electrochromic windows have gained growing interest for their ability to change their optical state in the visible and NIR ranges with minimal input power, making them energy-efficient. However, material processing costs, fabrication complexity, and poor electrochromic properties can be barriers to the widespread adoption of this technology. To address these issues, electrochromic material and fabrication processes are designed to realize their potential as a cost-effective and energy-efficient technology. In this work, an electrochromic composite material-based ink is synthesized consisting of WO3·H2O nanoplates supported on rGO (reduced graphene oxide) nanosheets (WH-rGO), wherein an optimized amount of rGO (0.05 to 0.5 wt %) is introduced for providing a higher conduction pathway for efficient charge transport without sacrificing the electrochromic performance of WO3·H2O nanoplates. The stable ink dispersion prepared in the study is deposited by spray coating on transparent conducting electrodes over large areas (25 cm2). The WH-rGO nanocomposite (0.4 wt %) results in 43% optical modulation at 700 nm, with bleaching and coloration times of 6 and 8 s, respectively. Interestingly, the device also possesses an electrochemical energy storage capability with an areal capacitance of 16.3 mF/cm2. The electrochromic composite material is successfully translated on tin doped indium oxide (ITO)-coated Al metal mesh hybrid electrodes (T = 80%, Rs = 40 Ω/□) to replace ITO. Finally, an electrochromic device of 5 × 5 cm2 is fabricated by spray-coating the ink on cost-effective ITO/Al-mesh hybrid electrodes. The device displays blue to colorless modulation with an excellent bleaching time of 0.43 s and a coloration time of 2.16 s, making it one among the fast-operating devices fabricated by complete solution processing. This work showcases the economical production of a dual-function electrochromic device, which can be a feasible option as an alternative to existing ITO-based devices in both automotive and infrastructure applications.

Assembled one-dimensional nanowires for flexible electronic devices via printing and coating: Techniques, applications, and perspectives

The rapid progress in flexible electronic devices has necessitated continual research into nanomaterials, structural design, and fabrication processes. One-dimensional nanowires, characterized by their distinct structures and exceptional properties, are considered essential components for various flexible electronic devices. Considerable attention has been directed toward the assembly of nanowires, which presents significant advantages. Printing and coating techniques can be used to assemble nanowires in a relatively simple, efficient, and cost-competitive manner and exhibit potential for scale-up production in the foreseeable future. This review aims to provide an overview of nanowire assembly using printing and coating techniques, such as bar coating, spray coating, dip coating, blade coating, 3D printing, and so forth. The application of assembled nanowires in flexible electronic devices is subsequently discussed. Finally, further discussion is presented on the potential and challenges of flexible electronic devices based on assembled nanowires via printing and coating.

High Sensitivity, Wide Linear-Range Strain Sensor Based on MXene/AgNW Composite Film with Hierarchical Microcrack

Stretchable strain sensors suffer the trade-off between sensitivity and linear sensing range. Developing sensors with both high sensitivity and wide linear range remains a formidable challenge. Different from conventional methods that rely on the structure design of sensing nanomaterial or substrate, here a heterogeneous-surface strategy for silver nanowires (AgNWs) and MXene is proposed to construct a hierarchical microcrack (HMC) strain sensor. The heterogeneous surface with distinct differences in cracks and adhesion strengths divides the sensor into two regions. One region contributes to high sensitivity through penetrating microcracks of the AgNW/MXene composite film during stretching. The other region maintains conductive percolation pathways to provide a wide linear sensing range through network microcracks. As a result, the HMC sensor exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factor ≈ 244), broad linear range (ɛ = 60%, R2 ≈ 99.25%), and fast response time (<30 ms). These merits are confirmed in the detection of large and subtle human motions and digital joint movement for Morse coding. The manipulation of cracks on the heterogeneous surface provides a new paradigm for designing high-performance stretchable strain sensors.

Recent Progress in Printed Photonic Devices: A Brief Review of Materials, Devices, and Applications

Printing electronics incorporates several significant technologies, such as semiconductor devices produced by various printing techniques on flexible substrates. With the growing interest in printed electronic devices, new technologies have been developed to make novel devices with inexpensive and large-area printing techniques. This review article focuses on the most recent developments in printed photonic devices. Photonics and optoelectronic systems may now be built utilizing materials with specific optical properties and 3D designs achieved through additive printing. Optical and architected materials that can be printed in their entirety are among the most promising future research topics, as are platforms for multi-material processing and printing technologies that can print enormous volumes at a high resolution while also maintaining a high throughput. Significant advances in innovative printable materials create new opportunities for functional devices to act efficiently, such as wearable sensors, integrated optoelectronics, and consumer electronics. This article provides an overview of printable materials, printing methods, and the uses of printed electronic devices.

Nanofiber Scaffolds as Drug Delivery Systems Promoting Wound Healing

Nanofiber scaffolds have emerged as a revolutionary drug delivery platform for promoting wound healing, due to their unique properties, including high surface area, interconnected porosity, excellent breathability, and moisture absorption, as well as their spatial structure which mimics the extracellular matrix. However, the use of nanofibers to achieve controlled drug loading and release still presents many challenges, with ongoing research still exploring how to load drugs onto nanofiber scaffolds without loss of activity and how to control their release in a specific spatiotemporal manner. This comprehensive study systematically reviews the applications and recent advances related to drug-laden nanofiber scaffolds for skin-wound management. First, we introduce commonly used methods for nanofiber preparation, including electrostatic spinning, sol-gel, molecular self-assembly, thermally induced phase separation, and 3D-printing techniques. Next, we summarize the polymers used in the preparation of nanofibers and drug delivery methods utilizing nanofiber scaffolds. We then review the application of drug-loaded nanofiber scaffolds for wound healing, considering the different stages of wound healing in which the drug acts. Finally, we briefly describe stimulus-responsive drug delivery schemes for nanofiber scaffolds, as well as other exciting drug delivery systems.

Mesoporous Cobalt Oxide (CoOx) Nanowires with Different Aspect Ratios for High Performance Hybrid Supercapacitors

Cobalt oxide (CoOx) nanowires have been broadly explored as advanced pseudocapacitive materials owing to their impressive theoretical gravimetric capacity. However, the traditional method of compositing with conductive nanoparticles to improve their poor conductivity will unpredictably lead to a decrease in actual capacity. The amelioration of the aspect ratio of the CoOx nanowires may affect the pathway of electron conduction and ion diffusion, thereby improving the electrochemical performances. Here, CoOx nanowires with various aspect ratios were synthesized by controlling hydrothermal temperature, and the CoOx electrodes achieve a high gravimetric specific capacity (1424.8 C g-1) and rate performance (38% retention at 100 A g-1 compared to 1 A g-1). Hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs) based on activated carbon anode reach an exceptional specific energy of 61.8 Wh kg-1 and excellent cyclic performance (92.72% retention, 5000 cycles at 5 A g-1). The CoOx nanowires exhibit great promise as a favorable cathode material in the field of high-performance supercapacitors (SCs).

Direct Writing of Silver Nanowire Patterns with Line Width down to 50 μm and Ultrahigh Conductivity

Direct writing of one-dimensional nanomaterials with large aspect ratios into customized, highly conductive, and high-resolution patterns is a challenging task. In this work, thin silver nanowires (AgNWs) with a length-to-diameter ratio of 730 are employed as a representative example to demonstrate a potent direct ink writing (DIW) strategy, in which aqueous inks using a natural polymer, sodium alginate, as the thickening agent can be easily patterned with arbitrary geometries and controllable structural features on a variety of planar substrates. With the aid of a quick spray-and-dry postprinting treatment at room temperature, the electrical conductivity and substrate adhesion of the written AgNWs-patterns improve simultaneously. This simple, environment benign, and low-temperature DIW strategy is effective for depositing AgNWs into patterns that are high-resolution (with line width down to 50 μm), highly conductive (up to 1.26 × 105 S/cm), and mechanically robust and have a large alignment order of NWs, regardless of the substrate's hardness, smoothness, and hydrophilicity. Soft electroadhesion grippers utilizing as-manufactured interdigitated AgNWs-electrodes exhibit an increased shear adhesion force of up to 15.5 kPa at a driving voltage of 3 kV, indicating the strategy is very promising for the decentralized and customized manufacturing of soft electrodes for future soft electronics and robotics.

Nanomaterials for Cortisol Sensing

Space represents one of the most dangerous environments for humans, which can be affected by high stress levels. This can lead to severe physiological problems, such as headaches, gastrointestinal disorders, anxiety, hypertension, depression, and coronary heart diseases. During a stress condition, the human body produces specific hormones, such as dopamine, adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol. In particular, the control of cortisol levels can be related to the stress level of an astronaut, particularly during a long-term space mission. The common analytical methods (HPLC, GC-MS) cannot be used in an extreme environment, such as a space station, due to the steric hindrance of the instruments and the absence of gravity. For these reasons, the development of smart sensing devices with a facile and fast analytical protocol can be extremely useful for space applications. This review summarizes the recent (from 2011) miniaturized sensoristic devices based on nanomaterials (gold and carbon nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanowires, nano-electrodes), which allow rapid and real-time analyses of cortisol levels in biological samples (such as saliva, urine, sweat, and plasma), to monitor the health conditions of humans under extreme stress conditions.
