Effects of O, S, and P in transition-metal compounds on the adsorption and catalytic ability of sulfur cathodes in lithium-sulfur batteries

Transition-metal compounds (TMCs) have recently become promising candidates as lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery cathode materials because they have unique adsorption and catalytic properties. However, the relationship between the anionic species and performance has not been sufficiently revealed. Herein, using FeCoNiX (X = O, S, and P) compounds as examples, we systematically studied the effects of the anion composition of FeCoNiX compounds on the adsorption and catalytic abilities of sulfur cathodes in Li-S batteries. Adsorption tests and density functional theory calculations showed that the adsorption ability toward lithium polysulfides follows the order: FeCoNiP > FeCoNiO > FeCoNiS, while in situ ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry revealed that the catalytic ability for lithium polysulfide conversion follows the order: FeCoNiP > FeCoNiS > FeCoNiO. These results indicate that FeCoNiP is an excellent polysulfide immobilizer and catalyst that restricts shuttling and improves reaction kinetics. Electrochemical tests further demonstrated that the FeCoNiP cathode delivered superior cycling performance to FeCoNiO or FeCoNiS. In addition, the battery performance order is consistent with that of catalytic ability, which suggests that catalytic ability plays a key influencing role in batteries. This study provides new insight into the use of O-, S-, and P-doped TMCs as functional sulfur carriers.

In Situ Phosphorization for Constructing Ni5P2-Ni Heterostructure Derived from Bimetallic MOF for Li-S Batteries

Heterostructured materials commonly consist of bifunctions due to the different ingredients. For host material in the sulfur cathode of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, the chemical adsorption and catalytic activity for lithium polysulfides (LiPS) are important. This work obtains a Ni5P2-Ni nanoparticle (Ni5P2-NiNPs) heterostructure through a confined self-reduction method followed by an in situ phosphorization process using Al/Ni-MOF as precursors. The Ni5P2-Ni heterostructure not only has strong chemical adsorption, but also can effectively catalyze LiPS conversion. Furthermore, the synthetic route can keep Ni5P2-NiNPs inside of the nanocomposites, which have structural stability, high conductivity, and efficient adsorption/catalysis in LiPS conversion. These advantages make the assembled Li-S battery deliver a reversible specific capacity of 619.7 mAh g- 1 at 0.5 C after 200 cycles. The in situ ultraviolet-visible technique proves the catalytic effect of Ni5P2-Ni heterostructure on LiPS conversion during the discharge process.

Cobalt Nitride Nanoparticles Encapsulated in N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes Modified Separator of Li-S Battery Achieving the Synergistic Effect of Restriction-Adsorption-Catalysis of Polysulfides

Although lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have broad market prospects due to their high theoretical energy density and potential cost-effectiveness, the practical applications still face serious shuttle effects of polysulfides (LiPSs) and slow redox reactions. Therefore, in this paper, cobalt nitride nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (CoN@NCNT) are prepared as a functional layer for the separator of high-performance Li-S batteries. Carbon nanotubes with large specific surface areas not only promote the transport of ions and electrons but also weaken the migration of LiPSs and confine the dissolution of LiPSs in electrolytes. The lithiophilic heteroatom N adsorbs LiPSs by strong chemical adsorption, and the CoN particles with high catalytic activity greatly improve the kinetics of the conversion between LiPSs and Li2S2/Li2S during the charge-discharge process. Due to these advantages, the battery with CoN@NCNT modified separator has superior rate performance (initial discharge capacity of 834.7 mAh g-1 after activation at 1 C) and excellent cycle performance (capacity remains 729.7 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 0.2 C). This work proposes a strategy that can give the separator a strong ability to confinement-adsorption-catalysis of LiPSs in order to provide more possibilities for the development of Li-S batteries.

Dual-functional mediators of high-entropy Prussian blue analogues for lithiophilicity and sulfiphilicity in Li-S batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered promising next-generation energy storage systems due to their high energy density (2600 W h kg-1) and cost-effectiveness. However, the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides in sulfur cathodes and uncontrollable Li dendrite growth in Li metal anodes significantly impede the practical application of Li-S batteries. In this study, we address these challenges by employing a high-entropy Prussian blue analogue Mn0.4Co0.4Ni0.4Cu0.4Zn0.4[Fe(CN)6]2 (HE-PBA) composite containing multiple metal ions as a dual-functional mediator for Li-S batteries. Specifically, the HE-PBA composite provides abundant metal active sites that efficiently chemisorb lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) to facilitate fast redox conversion kinetics of LiPSs. In Li metal anodes, the exceptional lithiophilicity of the HE-PBA ensures a homogeneous Li ion flux, resulting in uniform Li deposition while mitigating the growth of Li dendrites. As a result, our work demonstrates outstanding long-term cycling performance with a decay rate of only 0.05% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 2.0 C. The HE-PBA@Cu/Li anode maintains a stable overpotential even after 600 h at 0.5 mA cm-2 under the total areal capacity of 1.0 mA h cm-2. This study showcases the application potential of the HE-PBA in Li-S batteries and encourages further exploration of prospective high-entropy materials used to engineer next-generation batteries.

Triple microenvironment modulation of zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF) nanocages for boosting dopamine electrocatalysis

Multiple microenvironmental modulation of zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) is expected to solve the long-term intractable problem of low sensitivity in electrochemical sensing. Herein, the metal phthalocyanines with different central ions (PcM, M = Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) were introduced into ZIF-8 by in-situ synthesis method. Then, the hollow composite nanomaterials, HZIF-8/PcFe and HZIF-8@PcFe (HZIF-8, i.e., hollow ZIF-8) with different TA (tannic acid) coating thicknesses (∼11 nm and ∼33 nm) were successfully fabricated by carefully designed polyphenol-mediated modulation (PMM) strategy. Next, the HZIF-8@PcFe electrochemical sensor was constructed for selective and sensitive analysis by selecting dopamine (DA) as the analyte. The TA coating (superhydrophilic state), PcFe (redox properties) and hollow MOF cavity (faster mass transfer) was used as the triple microenvironment modulation of ZIF-8 to enhance the electrocatalytic performance. Under the optimum conditions (pH = 8.0), the linear correlations of 0.3 to 200 μmol/L was obtained for the peak current response, with a detection limit of 0.1 μmol/L (S/N = 3, i.e., Signal/Noise = 3). Meanwhile, the HZIF-8@PcFe electrochemical sensor exhibited excellent interference selectivity, reproducibility and stability, which enabled it to detect low abundance DA in real samples. And the F-test (homogeneity test of variance) and t-test (student's t test) statistical analyses were employed to enhance the accuracy of the actual samples' detection. This work will enlighten researchers working in the field of porous framework composites and open up new paths for the development of hollow MOFs hybrid materials in electrochemical sensing.

Constructing ion-transport blockchain by polypyrrole to link CoTi-ZIF-9 derived carbon materials for high-performance seawater desalination

The instability and poor electronic conductivity of carbon materials derived from bimetallic zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) pose significant challenges for utilizing these carbon materials as direct electrodes for achieving rapid electron transfer and high-performance capacitive deionization (CDI). However, modifying ZIFs through conductive polymers is a wise tool to enhance the target characteristics of ZIFs. Herein, a strategy is proposed to use polypyrrole (PPy) to interlink the carbon units derived from CoTi-ZIF-9 to construct a blockchain network system with high capacity and fast electrochemical kinetics for high performance CDI. In this system, PPy serves as a branched link connecting each carbon unit, so that the ions in the electrolyte can achieve low barrier and fast transmission in the three-dimensional network structure between the unit structures. As expected, with the improved charge transfer efficiency between electrode materials and electrolyte, the CDI cell exhibits excellent desalination capacity (77.3 mg g-1). In addition, density functional theory calculations also indicate that the introduction of PPy results in a higher electron density near the fermi surface of carbon material, which is conducive to electron transport and reaction kinetics. This work may provide important concepts for the design of CDI electrodes with high-conductivity and high-performance.

Application of Conductive MOF in Zinc-Based Batteries

The use of conductive MOFs (c-MOFs) in zinc-based batteries has been a popular research direction. Zinc-based batteries are widely used with the advantages of high specific capacity and safety and stability, but they also face many problems. c-MOFs have excellent conductivity compared with other primitive MOFs, and therefore have better applications in zinc-based batteries. In this paper, the transfer mechanisms of the unique charges of c-MOFs: hop transport and band transport, respectively, are discussed and the way of electron transport is further addressed. Then, the various ways to prepare c-MOFs are introduced, among which solvothermal, interfacial synthesis, and postprocessing methods are widely used. In addition, the applications of c-MOFs are discussed in terms of their role and performance in different types of zinc-based batteries. Finally, the current problems of c-MOFs and the prospects for their future development are presented.

Bifunctional K3PW12O40/Graphene Oxide-Modified Separator for Inhibiting Polysulfide Diffusion and Stabilizing Lithium Anode

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered as promising candidates for next-generation batteries due to their high theoretical energy density. However, the practical application of Li-S batteries is still hindered by several challenges, such as the polysulfide shuttle and the growth of lithium dendrites. Herein, we introduce a bifunctional K3PW12O40/graphene oxide-modified polypropylene separator (KPW/GO/PP) as a highly effective solution for mitigating polysulfide diffusion and protecting the lithium anode in Li-S batteries. By incorporating KPW into a densely stacked nanostructured graphene oxide (GO) barrier membrane, we synergistically capture and rapidly convert lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) electrochemically, thus effectively suppressing the shuttling effect. Moreover, the KPW/GO/PP separator can stabilize the lithium metal anode during cycling, suppress dendrite formation, and ensure a smooth and dense lithium metal surface, owing to regulated Li+ flux and uniform Li nucleation. Consequently, the constructed KPW/GO/PP separator delivered a favorable initial specific capacity (1006 mAh g-1) and remarkable cycling performance at 1.0 C (626 mAh g-1 for up to 500 cycles with a decay rate of 0.075% per cycle).

MOFs Containing Solid-State Electrolytes for Batteries

The use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) has been a very attractive research area that has received widespread attention in the modern world. SSEs can be divided into different types, some of which can be combined with MOFs to improve the electrochemical performance of the batteries by taking advantage of the high surface area and high porosity of MOFs. However, it also faces many serious problems and challenges. In this review, different types of SSEs are classified and the changes in these electrolytes after the addition of MOFs are described. Afterward, these SSEs with MOFs attached are introduced for different types of battery applications and the effects of these SSEs combined with MOFs on the electrochemical performance of the cells are described. Finally, some challenges faced by MOFs materials in batteries applications are presented, then some solutions to the problems and development expectations of MOFs are given.

Composite capillary carbon tube Nb18W16O93as advanced anode material for aqueous ion capacitors

Niobium-tungsten bimetal oxides have received wide attention due to their excellent lattice properties. In this work, Nb₁₈W₁₆O₉₃(NbWO) with a tetragonal tungsten bronze structure was synthesized by simple hydrothermal method. NbWO was modified to provide high specific surface area via combining with hollow carbon nanotubes. Meanwhile, NbWO grows along the tube wall of carbon nanotubes, thus buffering the volume effect of NbWO particles. Also, the migration distance of Li-ion is effectively shortened, as well as the improved ion transfer efficiency and the reaction kinetics. In addition, carbon tube can enhance conductivity of NbWO, contributing to outstanding charge storage capacity and rate energy. Precisely, NbWO@C as electrode possesses large specific capacity (249.6 F g^-1at 0.5 A g^-1) and good rate performance (55.9% capacity retention from 0.5 to 2 A g^-1). The aqueous Li-ion capacitor presents the advantages of high safety, low cost and good environmental friendliness. An asymmetric aqueous capacitor AC//NbWO@C, based on 'water-in-salt' electrolyte with high concentration lithium acetate, exhibits a large energy density of 43.2 Wh kg^-1and a power density of 9 kW kg^-1. Generally, NbWO@C as anode materials shows superior application perspective.

The synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework/prussian blue analogue heterostructure composites and their application in supercapacitors

ZIF-67/PBA heterostructure composites was prepared by the ion-exchange method with ZIF-67 nanoparticles as host MOFs. The electrochemical performance of the ZIF-67/PBA heterostructure composites improved after low-temperature calcination.
