High-Throughput Silica Nanoparticle Detection for Quality Control of Complex Early Life Nutrition Food Matrices

The addition of nanomaterials to improve product properties has become a matter of course for many commodities: e.g., detergents, cosmetics, and food products. While this practice improves product characteristics, the increasing exposure and potential impact of nanomaterials (<100 nm) raise concerns regarding both the human body and the environment. Special attention should be taken for vulnerable individuals such as those who are ill, elder, or newborns. But detecting and quantifying nanoparticles in complex food matrices like early life nutrition (ELN) poses a significant challenge due to the presence of additional particles, emulsion-droplets, or micelles. There is a pressing demand for standardized protocols for nanoparticle quantification and the specification of "nanoparticle-free" formulations. To address this, silica nanoparticles (SiNPs), commonly used as anticaking agents (AA) in processed food, were employed as a model system to establish characterization methods with different levels of accuracy and sensitivity versus speed, sample handling, and automatization. Different acid treatments were applied for sample digestion, followed by size exclusion chromatography. Morphology, size, and number of NPs were measured by transmission electron microscopy, and the amount of Si was determined by microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry. This successfully enabled distinguishing SiNP content in ELN food formulations with 2-4% AA from AA-free formulations and sorting SiNPs with diameters of 20, 50, and 80 nm. Moreover, the study revealed the significant influence of the ELN matrix on sample preparation, separation, and characterization steps, necessitating method adaptations compared to the reference (SiNP in water). In the future, we expect these methods to be implemented in standard quality control of formulation processes, which demand high-throughput analysis and automated evaluation.

Global Research Trends on the Use of Nanotechnology to Boost Meat Production: A Scientometric Analysis

Meat production plays a vital socioeconomic role for sustainable development and for promoting food security in most countries. However, not much is known about research agendas done globally and the advancement of knowledge-generating networks in this area of study. The present study aims to reveal and analyze scientific research outputs on meat production linked with recent nanotechnology research work done till date. A compilation of research advancement and development within the sphere was realized through a scientometric study to comprehend the trend of research outputs, scientific impacts, authors' involvement, collaboration networks, and the advancement of knowledge gaps for future research endeavors on the current subject matter. Scholarly published articles were retrieved from the web of science (WOS) and Scopus databases from 1985 to 2020 and they were merged together using bibliometric package in R studio. All duplicated articles (438) from both data bases were excluded. A combination of terms (nano* AND (livestock* OR meat* OR beef* OR mutton* OR pork* OR chevon* OR chicken* OR turkey*)), and conversely analyzed for scientometric indices. A collection of 656 peer-reviewed, research articles were retrieved for the study period and authored by 2,133 researchers with a collaboration index of 3.31. The research outputs were highest in the year 2020 with total research outputs of 140 articles. The topmost three authors' keywords commonly used by authors were nanoparticles, meat, and chitosan with a respective frequency of 75, 62, and 57. China, Iran, and India ranked top in terms of meat production research outputs linked to nanotechnology and total citation with respective article productivity (total citations) of 160 (3,193), 111 (1,765), and 37 (552). Our findings revealed an increasing trend in research (with an annual growth rate of 25.18%) tending toward advancing meat production with the use of nanotechnology. Likewise, there is an increasing pointer to the fact that research work on nanotechnology and meat production has the prospect to influence positively, decision-making on research direction, and collaborations, hereby increasing the production of meat and its products in the future.

Regulatory landscape of nanotechnology and nanoplastics from a global perspective

Nanotechnology and more particularly nanotechnology-based products and materials have provided a huge potential for novel solutions to many of the current challenges society is facing. However, nanotechnology is also an area of product innovation that is sometimes developing faster than regulatory frameworks. This is due to the high complexity of some nanomaterials, the lack of a globally harmonised regulatory definition and the different scopes of regulation at a global level. Research organisations and regulatory bodies have spent many efforts in the last two decades to cope with these challenges. Although there has been a significant advancement related to analytical approaches for labelling purposes as well as to the development of suitable test guidelines for nanomaterials and their safety assessment, there is a still a need for greater global collaboration and consensus in the regulatory field. Furthermore, with growing societal concerns on plastic litter and tiny debris produced by degradation of littered plastic objects, the impact of micro- and nanoplastics on humans and the environment is an emerging issue. Despite increasing research and initial regulatory discussions on micro- and nanoplastics, there are still knowledge gaps and thus an urgent need for action. As nanoplastics can be classified as a specific type of incidental nanomaterials, current and future scientific investigations should take into account the existing profound knowledge on nanotechnology/nanomaterials when discussing issues around nanoplastics. This review was conceived at the 2019 Global Summit on Regulatory Sciences that took place in Stresa, Italy, on 24-26 September 2019 (GSRS 2019) and which was co-organised by the Global Coalition for Regulatory Science Research (GCRSR) and the European Commission's (EC) Joint Research Centre (JRC). The GCRSR consists of regulatory bodies from various countries around the globe including EU bodies. The 2019 Global Summit provided an excellent platform to exchange the latest information on activities carried out by regulatory bodies with a focus on the application of nanotechnology in the agriculture/food sector, on nanoplastics and on nanomedicines, including taking stock and promoting further collaboration. Recently, the topic of micro- and nanoplastics has become a new focus of the GCRSR. Besides discussing the challenges and needs, some future directions on how new tools and methodologies can improve the regulatory science were elaborated by summarising a significant portion of discussions during the summit. It has been revealed that there are still some uncertainties and knowledge gaps with regard to physicochemical properties, environmental behaviour and toxicological effects, especially as testing described in the dossiers is often done early in the product development process, and the material in the final product may behave differently. The harmonisation of methodologies for quantification and risk assessment of nanomaterials and micro/nanoplastics, the documentation of regulatory science studies and the need for sharing databases were highlighted as important aspects to look at.
