Abstract
The global impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was significant, including in Spain. The initial outbreak in late January 2020 prompted a frantic effort to comprehend the virus and contain its spread, given the limited knowledge available at the time. The study by Amich et al. (2022) in Frontiers in Endocrinology aimed to investigate the influence of thyroid hormone levels and age on the severity of COVID-19 in euthyroid and levothyroxine-treated patients. Although a direct correlation between thyroid hormone levels and the severity of COVID-19 has not been established, it is known that thyroid dysfunction affects immune function and general health, which may impact the outcomes of COVID-19. The research included patients from the Clinic San Carlos Hospital in Madrid, and a comprehensive range of data was collected from each patient, including demographic information, symptoms, comorbidities, and laboratory test results. This approach was employed in order to accurately match patients and identify factors that may influence the severity of COVID-19 outcomes. Blood samples were analyzed using chemiluminescence on a DXI-800® instrument, with the following hormones quantified: thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), and free triiodothyronine (FT3). These insights contribute to an understanding of the interplay between thyroid function and the severity of COVID-19, highlighting the need for careful patient management in those with thyroid disorders during the pandemic.

Abstract
Importance Few studies have investigated the association between COVID-19 and autoimmune and autoinflammatory connective tissue disorders; however, research with long-term observation remains insufficient. Objective To investigate the long-term risk of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases after COVID-19 over an extended observation period. Design, Setting, and Participants This retrospective nationwide population-based study investigated the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency-COVID-19-National Health Insurance Service (K-COV-N) cohort. Individuals with confirmed COVID-19 from October 8, 2020, to December 31, 2022, and controls identified among individuals who participated in the general health examination in 2018 were included in the analysis. Exposures Confirmed COVID-19. Main Outcomes and Measures Incidence and risk of autoimmune and autoinflammatory connective tissue disorders in patients after COVID-19. Various covariates, such as demographic characteristics, general health data, socioeconomic status, and comorbidity profiles, were balanced using inverse probability weighting. Results A total of 6 912 427 participants (53.6% male; mean [SD] age, 53.39 [20.13] years) consisting of 3 145 388 with COVID-19 and 3 767 039 controls with an observational period of more than 180 days were included. Alopecia areata (adjusted hazard ratio [AHR], 1.11 [95% CI, 1.07-1.15]), alopecia totalis (AHR, 1.24 [95% CI, 1.09-1.42]), vitiligo (AHR, 1.11 [95% CI, 1.04-1.19]), Behçet disease (AHR, 1.45 [95% CI, 1.20-1.74]), Crohn disease (AHR, 1.35 [95% CI, 1.14-1.60]), ulcerative colitis (AHR, 1.15 [95% CI, 1.04-1.28]), rheumatoid arthritis (AHR, 1.09 [95% CI, 1.06-1.12]), systemic lupus erythematosus (AHR, 1.14 [95% CI, 1.01-1.28]), Sjögren syndrome (AHR, 1.13 [95% CI, 1.03-1.25]), ankylosing spondylitis (AHR, 1.11 [95% CI, 1.02-1.20]), and bullous pemphigoid (AHR, 1.62 [95% CI, 1.07-2.45]) were associated with higher risk in the COVID-19 group. Subgroup analyses revealed that demographic factors, including male and female sex, age younger than 40 years, and age 40 years and older, exhibited diverse associations with the risk of autoimmune and autoinflammatory outcomes. In addition, severe COVID-19 infection requiring intensive care unit admission, the Delta period, and not being vaccinated were associated with higher risk. Conclusions and Relevance This retrospective cohort study with an extended follow-up period found associations between COVID-19 and the long-term risk of various autoimmune and autoinflammatory connective tissue disorders. Long-term monitoring and care of patients is crucial after COVID-19, considering demographic factors, disease severity, and vaccination status, to mitigate these risks.

Abstract
Background Since the emergence of COVID-19, China has taken strict prevention and control measures against the disease. At the end of 2022, when the government optimized and relaxed the COVID-19 prevention and control policy, a new wave of the epidemic appeared. This paper reports an outbreak of COVID-19 among inpatients in a psychiatric hospital in Wenzhou, China. Methods The case definition of COVID-19 was established. Throat swab specimens were collected and examined by RT-PCT. Questionnaires were distributed to hospitalized patients. Survey data were collected and analyzed. Results Of 902 inpatients in our hospital, 762 became infected with COVID-19, an attack rate of 84.5%. The outbreak occurred from 10 December, 2022 to January 18, 2023. Twenty patients died, yielding a case fatality rate of 2.6%. Most of the dead were among elderly people with underlying diseases, and 19 of the deceased were over 65 years old. Conclusion Our investigation showed that the outbreak of COVID-19 among hospitalized patients had the characteristics of high incidence, strong infectivity, and rapid transmission. Infectious sources were introduced into the hospital from the community and spread within the hospital, resulting in an outbreak. In addition, special attention should be paid to elderly people with underlying diseases when treating patients with COVID-19 in the future.

Abstract
The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a global health crisis. Mortality predictors in critically ill patients remain under investigation. A retrospective cohort study included 201 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) due to COVID-19. Data on demographic characteristics, laboratory findings, and mortality were collected. Logistic regression analysis was conducted with various independent variables, including demographic characteristics, clinical factors, and treatment methods. The study aimed to identify key risk factors associated with mortality in an ICU. In an investigation of 201 patients comprising non-survivors (n = 80, 40%) and Survivors (n = 121, 60%), we identified several markers significantly associated with ICU mortality. Lower Interleukin 6 and White Blood Cells levels at both 24- and 48-hours post-ICU admission emerged as significant indicators of survival. The study employed logistic regression analysis to evaluate risk factors for in-ICU mortality. Analysis results revealed that demographic and clinical factors, including gender, age, and comorbidities, were not significant predictors of in-ICU mortality. Ventilator-associated pneumonia was significantly higher in Survivors, and the use of antibiotics showed a significant association with increased mortality risk in the multivariate model (OR: 11.2, p = 0.031). Our study underscores the significance of monitoring Il-6 and WBC levels within 48 hours of ICU admission, potentially influencing COVID-19 patient outcomes. These insights may reshape therapeutic strategies and ICU protocols for critically ill patients.

Abstract
Introduction Currently available data regarding the impact of liver transplantation on the outcomes of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 is conflicting. This study aims to compare the outcomes and resource utilization between patients with and without a history of liver transplant hospitalized with COVID-19. Methods and materials This is a retrospective study using the National Inpatient Sample. All adults hospitalized with COVID-19 in the year 2020 were included. Mortality was the primary outcome, while endotracheal intubation, length of hospital stay, and total hospital charges were the secondary outcomes. Results Out of 1,050,720 adults admitted with COVID-19 as the primary diagnosis, 1,455 had a secondary diagnosis of liver transplant. Mortality was not significantly increased in transplant recipients (OR adjusted = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.46-1.03, P = 0.07). Intubation rates and total hospital charges did not differ significantly between liver transplant recipients and patients without a history of liver transplant receipt. LOS was shorter by a coefficient of almost two days in patients with a history of LT (P < 0.001). Conclusion Liver transplant recipients do not appear to be at increased risk of severe COVID-19 and COVID-19 mortality.

Abstract
AIMS Emerging evidence highlights the role of COVID-19 in instigating gut dysbiosis, with repercussions on disease severity and bidirectional gut-organ communication involving the lung, heart, brain, and liver. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in addressing gut dysbiosis associated with COVID-19, as well as their impact on related disease severity and clinical outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS We systematically review 27 studies exploring the efficacy of different microbiome-modulating therapies: probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation as potential interventions for COVID-19. KEY FINDINGS The probiotics and synbiotics investigated encompassed a spectrum of eight bacterial and fungal genera, namely Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Pediococcus, Bacillus, Saccharomyces, and Kluyveromyces. Noteworthy prebiotics employed in these studies included chestnut tannin, galactooligosaccharides, fructooligosaccharides, xylooligosaccharide, and resistant dextrin. The majority of the investigated biotics exhibited positive effects on COVID-19 patients, manifesting in symptom alleviation, inflammation reduction, and notable decreases in mortality rates. Five studies reported death rates, showing an average mortality ranging from 0 % to 11 % in the intervention groups, as compared to 3 % to 30 % in the control groups. Specifically, probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics demonstrated efficacy in diminishing the duration and severity of symptoms while significantly accelerating viral and symptomatic remission. FMT emerged as a particularly effective strategy, successfully restoring gut microbiota and ameliorating gastrointestinal disorders. SIGNIFICANCE The insights gleaned from this review significantly contribute to our broader comprehension of the therapeutic potential of biotics in addressing COVID-19-related gut dysbiosis and mitigating secondary multi-organ complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Increased blood glucose levels atadmission are frequently observed in COVID-19 patients, even in those without pre-existing diabetes. Hyperglycaemia is associated with an increased incidence of severe COVID-19 infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between hyperglycaemia at admission with the need for invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) and in-hospital mortality in patients without diabetes who were hospitalized for COVID-19 infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective observational study was conducted at Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Clinics, Lithuania with adult patients who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 SARS-CoV-2 and were hospitalized between March 2020 and May 2021. Depersonalized data were retrieved from electronic medical records. Based on blood glucose levels on the day of admission, patients without diabetes were divided into 4 groups: patients with hypoglycaemia (blood glucose below 4.0 mmol/L), patients with normoglycaemia (blood glucose between ≥4.0 mmol/L and <6.1 mmol/L), patients with mild hyperglycaemia (blood glucose between ≥6.1 mmol/L and <7.8 mmol/L), and patients with intermittent hyperglycaemia (blood glucose levels ≥7.8 mmol/L and <11.1 mmol/L). A multivariable binary logistic regression model was created to determine the association between hyperglycaemia and the need for IMV. Survival analysis was performed to assess the effect of hyperglycaemia on outcome within 30 days of hospitalization. RESULTS Among 1945 patients without diabetes at admission, 1078 (55.4%) had normal glucose levels, 651 (33.5%) had mild hyperglycaemia, 196 (10.1%) had intermittent hyperglycaemia, and 20 (1.0%) had hypoglycaemia. The oddsratio (OR) for IMV in patients with intermittent hyperglycaemia was 4.82 (95% CI 2.70-8.61, p < 0.001), and the OR was 2.00 (95% CI 1.21-3.31, p = 0.007) in those with mild hyperglycaemia compared to patients presenting normal glucose levels. The hazardratio (HR) for 30-day in-hospital mortality in patients with mild hyperglycaemia was 1.62 (95% CI 1.10-2.39, p = 0.015), while the HR was 3.04 (95% CI 2.01-4.60, p < 0.001) in patients with intermittent hyperglycaemia compared to those with normoglycaemia at admission. CONCLUSIONS In COVID-19 patients without pre-existing diabetes, the presence of hyperglycaemia at admission is indicative of COVID-19-induced alterations in glucose metabolism and stress hyperglycaemia. Hyperglycaemia at admission in COVID-19 patients without diabetes is associated with an increased risk of invasive mechanical ventilation and in-hospital mortality. This finding highlights the importance for clinicians to carefully consider and select optimal support and treatment strategies for these patients. Further studies on the long-term consequences of hyperglycaemia in this specific population are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) are lesions larger than 1 cm that are incidentally detected in the adrenal glands. Chest computed tomography (CCT) is widely used in the first evaluation of patients with suspected coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that resulted in many incidental findings in the thorax and upper abdomen. In this study, we aimed to investigate the frequency of AI and their effects on the course and outcome of COVID-19 regardless of functional status. MATERIAL AND METHODS We included 2493 patients aged between 18 and 99 years and whose adrenal glands were clearly visible in CCT images. They were divided into two groups: those with AI (AI group) and without AI (Control group). RESULTS AI was detected in 148 (5.93%) patients and 80 (54.1%) of them were male. There was no difference in sex distribution between the groups, but the median age of patients with AI was significantly higher than those without AI [54.5 (20-94 years) vs. 42 (18-99 years); p < 0.001)]. In addition, in the AI group, both hospitalizations due to COVID-19-related conditions (30.4 vs. 21.2%, p = 0.008) and the mortality rate experienced during this time was significantly higher (14.7 vs. 7%, p < 0.001) diseases. The AI group had a significantly higher comorbidity rate than the control group (61.5 vs. 41.9%, p < 0.001). The most common comorbid diseases were hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, respiratory system diseases, and hyperlipidaemia. Advanced age and male gender in terms of mortality, advanced age and covid 19 positivity in terms of hospitalization were determined as significant risk factors. CONCLUSIONS The presence of AI may increase the morbidity and mortality rates associated with COVID-19, regardless of their functional status. Therefore, patients subjected to CCT imaging for COVID-19-related lung diseases should also be evaluated for AI. Careful follow-up of patients with COVID-19 and AI is necessary to monitor the progression of COVID-19.

Abstract
Amyloidosis is one of the rare systemic illnesses characterized by the deposition of amyloid fibrils in various organs and tissues. There is a common point between COVID-19 and systemic amyloidosis regarding the multiorgan involvement in the pathological process which leads to a heightened risk for severe morbidity and mortality in amyloidosis patients who contracted COVID-19. We performed a pathomorphological analysis of the autopsy records of 22 patients who had COVID-19 and pre-existing systemic amyloidosis. The premortem diagnosis of systemic amyloidosis was established in 55% of patients, and in other 45% of cases, amyloidosis was found at autopsy. Based on the results of immunohistochemical amyloid typing, amyloid A (AA) amyloidosis was detected in 23%, amyloid light chain (AL) lambda in 32%, AL kappa-in 9%, and transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis-in 36% of observations. Immunohistochemical staining with an antibody against SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) protein revealed positive immune reactions in type II alveolocytes in 59% of deceased persons. The analysis of autopsy findings indicates that patients with systemic amyloidosis are more likely to experience an aggressive clinical course of COVID-19 which leads to a multiorgan failure and a higher risk of fatal outcome.

Abstract
Introduction Safety and tolerability of COVID-19 vaccines were demonstrated by several clinical trials which led to the first FDA/EMA approvals in 2021. Because of mass immunizations, most social restrictions were waived with effects on quality of life. Therefore, our a-priori hypothesis was that COVID-19 vaccination impacted the health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in patients with breast and gynecological cancer. Methods From March 15th until August 11th, 2022, fully vaccinated patients with breast and gynecological cancer treated in the oncological outpatient clinics of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, LMU University Hospital, Munich, Germany filled out a vaccine related QoL survey. Patients were asked about demographics (age, comorbidities), clinical parameters related to previous COVID-19 infections, and HR-QoL related parameters (living situation, responsibilities in everyday life). Subsequently, a questionnaire with 12 items was designed using a 5-point Likert scale (0 - strongly disagree/4 - strongly agree), covering the aspects health and therapy, social environment, participation in everyday life and overall assessment. Results By August 11th, 2022, 108 out of 114 (94.7%) patients had received at least three doses of COVID-19 vaccine and six patients at least two doses. More than half of the surveyed patients were >55y (52.6%; mean: 55.1y, range 29-86y). Patients with breast cancer (n= 83) had early (59.0%) or metastatic cancer (41.0%); gynecological cancers (n=31) also included metastatic (54.8%) and non-metastatic cancer (45.2%). 83.3% of the patients stated that COVID-19 vaccination had a positive impact on their HR-QoL. Furthermore, 29 patients (25.4%) had undergone a COVID-19 infection. These patients reported self-limiting symptoms for a median duration of 5.9 days and no hospital admissions were registered. Conclusions Our study demonstrates that vaccination against COVID-19 was positively associated with HR-QoL in patients with breast and gynecological cancer. Furthermore, vaccinated patients who underwent COVID-19 disease experienced only self-limiting symptoms.

Abstract
Patients affected by COVID-19 are prone to facing disorders in multiple systems and organs, which can lead to deleterious diseases; in addition, people with pre-existing diseases may be more prone to the worst outcomes, and the most vulnerable are patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effects of physical activity and/or physical exercise prescribed to individuals with diabetes on the maintenance of plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin during the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies were found by searching PubMed, SCOPUS, Embase, Web of Science, SciELO, LILACS, SportDiscus, Bireme/BVS and Google Scholar databases. The inclusion criteria were articles that addressed only patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes (T1D and T2D) who had evaluated the level of physical activity or physical exercise and described the effects on plasma glucose and/or glycated hemoglobin in cross-sectional, retrospective, and observational studies, meeting the main criteria established by GRADE. The PICO and GRADE strategies were used to select and assess the methodological quality of studies. Two reviewers searched and selected the articles in databases independently and blindly, during which oppositions and disagreements about the inclusion of articles were discussed and resolved by a third reviewer. Evidence corroborates that levels of physical activity were reduced due to the lockdown, leading to increased body weight and worse glycemic control. On the other hand, individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) (T1D and T2D) who maintained and/or increased levels of physical activity or physical exercise showed reduced plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. Adequate levels of physical exercise and physical activity are beneficial for glucose and HbA1c control in diabetic patients (type 1 or type 2). In addition, maintaining adequate levels of physical activity can contribute to reducing health problems when these patients are infected with COVID-19.

Abstract
Importance Multiple cases of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases after COVID-19 have been reported. However, their incidences and risks have rarely been quantified. Objective To investigate the incidences and risks of autoimmune and autoinflammatory connective tissue disorders after COVID-19. Design, Setting, and Participants This was a retrospective population-based study conducted between October 8, 2020, and December 31, 2021, that used nationwide data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency COVID-19 National Health Insurance Service cohort and included individuals who received a diagnosis of COVID-19 via polymerase chain reaction testing and a control group with no evidence of COVID-19 identified from National Health Insurance Service of Korea cohort. Data analysis was conducted from September 2022 to August 2023. Exposures Receipt of diagnosis of COVID-19. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcomes were the incidence and risk of autoimmune and autoinflammatory connective tissue disorders following COVID-19. A total of 32 covariates, including demographics, socioeconomic statuses, lifestyle factors, and comorbidity profiles, were balanced through inverse probability weighting. The incidences and risks of autoimmune and autoinflammatory connective tissue disorders were compared between the groups using multivariable Cox proportional hazard analyses. Results A total of 354 527 individuals with COVID-19 (mean [SD] age, 52.24 [15.55] years; 179 041 women [50.50%]) and 6 134 940 controls (mean [SD] age, 52.05 [15.63] years; 3 074 573 women [50.12%]) were included. The risks of alopecia areata (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.12; 95% CI, 1.05-1.19), alopecia totalis (aHR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.39-2.17), antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (aHR, 2.76; 95% CI, 1.64-4.65), Crohn disease (aHR, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.31-2.15), and sarcoidosis (aHR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.00-2.52) were higher in the COVID-19 group. The risks of alopecia totalis, psoriasis, vitiligo, vasculitis, Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, adult-onset Still disease, Sjögren syndrome, ankylosing spondylitis, and sarcoidosis were associated with the severity of COVID-19. Conclusions and Relevance In this retrospective cohort study, COVID-19 was associated with a substantial risk for autoimmune and autoinflammatory connective tissue disorders, indicating that long-term management of patients with COVID-19 should include evaluation for such disorders.

Abstract
The global health emergency caused by COVID-19 concluded in May 2023, marking the beginning of an endemic phase. This study aimed to evaluate the association between vaccination status and other patient characteristics and the risk of severe disease during this new endemic period. A nationwide cohort study was conducted in Mexico, where we analyzed data from 646 adults who had received positive confirmation of COVID-19 through PCR testing from May to August 2023. The overall risk of severe symptoms in the study sample was 5.3%. The average time elapsed from the last vaccine shot to symptom onset was over six months in all the immunized groups (1, 2 or 3 vaccine doses). Compared to unvaccinated patients, those with three vaccine doses showed an elevated risk of severe symptoms. Advancing age and various chronic comorbidities (specifically cardiovascular, kidney, and obstructive pulmonary conditions) were associated with a heightened risk of severe COVID-19 manifestations. These findings underscore the ongoing seriousness of COVID-19, even in an endemic phase, underscoring the urgent need for tailored interventions aimed at high-risk patients.

Abstract
The novel Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) responsible for the coronavirus disease outbreak initiated in 2019 (COVID-19) has been shown to affect the health of infected patients in a manner at times dependent on pre-existing comorbidities. Reported here is an overview of the correlation between comorbidities and the exacerbation of the disease in patients with COVID-19, which may lead to poor clinical outcomes or mortality. General medical issues are also reviewed, such as the types of symptoms present in people infected with SARS-CoV-2, the long-term effects of COVID-19 disease, and the types of treatment that are currently used.

Abstract
Aim To evaluate functional changes in the heart in the long-term following COVID-19 in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF).Material and methods Case reports of 54 patients aged 69.1±9.7 years who had COVID-19 from January 2021 through January 2022 and had been previously diagnosed with NYHA functional class II-III CHF were studied. Two comparison groups were isolated: HF with LV EF >50 % (n=39) and <50 % (n=15). Echocardiography was used to evaluate changes in LV EF and pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) 5-6 months following COVID-19.Results In all CHF patients after COVID-19 at 5.8 months on average, LV EF decreased (median difference, 2.5 %; 95 % confidence interval (CI): 6.99×10-5- 4.99) and PASP increased (median difference, 8 mm Hg; 95 % CI: 4.5-12.9). In the HF group with LV EF <50 %, the decrease in EF was greater than in the group with LV EF >50 % (6.9 and 0.7 %, respectively; p=0.037); furthermore, the CHF phenotype did not influence the change in PASP (p=0.4). The one-factor regression analysis showed that the dynamics of LV EF decrease was significantly influenced by the baseline decrease in LV EF, whereas the change in PASP was influenced by the dynamics of LV EF decrease, presence of dyslipidemia, and statin treatment. Furthermore, the multifactorial analysis showed that prognostically significant factors for long-term changes in LV EF following COVID-19 were male gender (odds ratio (OR), 5.92; 95 % CI: 1.31-26.75; p=0.014), LV EF at baseline <50 % (OR, 0.88; 95 % CI: 0.8-0.96; p<0.001); changes in PASP depended on the presence of dyslipidemia (OR, 0.08; 95 % CI: 0.01-0.84; p=0.018).Conclusion This study showed that COVID-19 in the long term can influence the course of CHF; in this process, HF patients with EF <50 % have progression of systolic dysfunction and PASP, whereas patients with EF >50 % have an isolated increase in PASP.

Abstract
Background COVID-19 has been associated with negative results in patients with A blood group and with a better evolution in O blood group individuals. Aim Because the evidence regarding ABO blood groups and COVID was empirically not that clear in our country, we tested the association regarding COVID-19 and blood groups. Material and Methods Adult patients were enrolled in this prospective, case-control, observational multicenter study. Patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 were assigned to one of three groups based on the clinical presentation of the infection. Age, gender, ABO and Rh blood groups, body mass index, history of diabetes mellitus or high blood pressure, and smoking were recorded directly or from their clinical charts. ABO blood group was obtained from 5,000 blood donors (50% each gender). Atherothrombotic variables were compared with a nation-wide data collection. Results A total of 2,416 patients with COVID-19 were included (women:39.6%; men:60.4%). There were no significant differences between cases and controls in terms of age. O blood group was the most frequently found in healthy donors and COVID-19 patients, but this blood group was significantly higher in COVID-19 patients vs. healthy donors. ABO blood group was not associated with the final health status in COVID-19 patients. Obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and smoking were significantly more frequent among COVID-19 patients. Conclusion The proposed protective effect of the O blood group in COVID-19 patients could not be reproduced in the Mexican population while some atherothrombotic risk factors had a significant effect on the clinical evolution.
