Classification of secondary relaxation in glass-formers based on dynamic properties

Unifying the temperature dependent dynamics of glass formers

Strong changes in bulk properties, such as modulus and viscosity, are observed near the glass transition temperature, Tg, of amorphous materials. For more than a century, intense efforts have been made to define a microscopic origin for these macroscopic changes in properties. Using transition state theory (TST), we delve into the atomic/molecular level picture of how microscopic localized unit relaxations, or "cage rattles," evolve to macroscopic structural relaxations above Tg. Unit motion is broken down into two populations: (1) simultaneous rearrangement occurs among a critical number of units, nα, which ranges from 1 to 4, allowing a systematic classification of glass formers, GFs, that is compared to fragility; and (2) near Tg, adjacent units provide additional free volume for rearrangement, not simultaneously, but within the "primitive" lifetime, τ1, of one unit rattling in its cage. Relaxation maps illustrate how Johari-Goldstein β-relaxations stem from the rattle of nα units. We analyzed a wide variety of glassy materials and materials with a glassy response using literature data. Our four-parameter equation fits "strong" and "weak" GFs over the entire range of temperatures and also extends to other glassy systems, such as ion-transporting polymers and ferroelectric relaxors. The role of activation entropy in boosting preexponential factors to high "unphysical" apparent frequencies is discussed. Enthalpy-entropy compensation is clearly illustrated using the TST approach.

Role of anisotropy in understanding the molecular grounds for density scaling in dynamics of glass-forming liquids

Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of glass-forming liquids play a pivotal role in uncovering the molecular nature of the liquid vitrification process. In particular, much focus was given to elucidating the interplay between the character of intermolecular potential and molecular dynamics behaviour. This has been tried to achieve by simulating the spherical particles interacting via isotropic potential. However, when simulation and experimental data are analysed in the same way by using the density scaling approaches, serious inconsistency is revealed between them. Similar scaling exponent values are determined by analysing the relaxation times and pVT data obtained from computer simulations. In contrast, these values differ significantly when the same analysis is carried out in the case of experimental data. As discussed thoroughly herein, the coherence between results of simulation and experiment can be achieved if anisotropy of intermolecular interactions is introduced to MD simulations. In practice, it has been realized in two different ways: (1) by using the anisotropic potential of the Gay-Berne type or (2) by replacing the spherical particles with quasi-real polyatomic anisotropic molecules interacting through isotropic Lenard-Jones potential. In particular, the last strategy has the potential to be used to explore the relationship between molecular architecture and molecular dynamics behaviour. Finally, we hope that the results presented in this review will also encourage others to explore how 'anisotropy' affects remaining aspects related to liquid-glass transition, like heterogeneity, glass transition temperature, glass forming ability, etc.

Protecting Proteins from Desiccation Stress Using Molecular Glasses and Gels

Faced with desiccation stress, many organisms deploy strategies to maintain the integrity of their cellular components. Amorphous glassy media composed of small molecular solutes or protein gels present general strategies for protecting against drying. We review these strategies and the proposed molecular mechanisms to explain protein protection in a vitreous matrix under conditions of low hydration. We also describe efforts to exploit similar strategies in technological applications for protecting proteins in dry or highly desiccated states. Finally, we outline open questions and possibilities for future explorations.

Tuning the Physical State of Aripiprazole by Mesoporous Silica

The main purpose of our studies is to demonstrate that commercially available mesoporous silica (MS) can be used to control the physical state of aripiprazole (ARP). The investigations performed utilizing differential scanning calorimetry and broadband dielectric spectroscopy reveal that silica can play different roles depending on its concentration in the system with amorphous ARP. At low MS content, it activates recrystallization of the active pharmaceutical ingredient and supports forming the III polymorphic form of ARP. At intermediate MS content (between ca. 27 and 65 wt %), MS works as a recrystallization inhibitor of ARP. At these concentrations, the formation of III polymorphic form is no longer favorable; therefore, it is possible to use this additive to obtain ARP in either IV or X polymorphic form. At the same time, employing MS in concentrations >65 wt % amorphous form of ARP with high physical stability can be obtained. Finally, regardless of the polymorphic form it crystallizes into, each composite is characterized by the same temperature dependence of relaxation times in the supercooled and glassy states.

Crystallization kinetics of (S)-4'-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)biphenyl-4-yl 4-[4-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxy)but-1-oxy]-2-fluorobenzoate

Chiral liquid crystalline compounds belonging to the homologous series of (S)-4'-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)biphenyl-4-yl 4-[m-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxy)alk-1-oxy]-2-fluorobenzoates show various behaviors on cooling depending on the length of the CmH2m chain. The homologue with m = 2 crystallizes, while for m = 5, 6, 7, and presumably also for m = 3, the glass of the anticlinic smectic CA* phase is formed. The previous results for m = 4 suggest that this homologue may also be a glassformer. This paper presents the study of the crystallization kinetics for the compound with m = 4 in isothermal conditions (by polarizing optical microscopy) and for the 5-40 K min-1 cooling rates (by differential scanning calorimetry). Microscopic observations enable estimation of the energy barrier for nucleation, which equals 409 kJ mol-1. The threshold cooling rate necessary for complete vitrification of the smectic CA* phase, obtained by extrapolating the enthalpy change during crystallization to zero, is equal to 81 K min-1 or 64 K min-1 for the linear and parabolic fits, respectively. The structural studies by X-ray diffraction show that crystal phases have lamellar structures both in the pristine sample and after crystallization from the melt but with different layer spacing. A weak relaxation process is detected in the sample after melt crystallization, revealing the presence of the conformational disorder. The dynamic glass transition temperature of the SmCA* phase, estimated from the relaxation time of the PH process (as the α-relaxation time could not be registered in a wide enough temperature range), is 244 K.

Internal Secondary Relaxation as a Dielectric Probe of Molecular Surroundings

We investigated the secondary relaxation behavior in rotor molecules in a glassy and crystalline state by using the dielectric method. Without changing the molecular source of secondary relaxation, only by modifying the environment around the rotating unit we observed notable variations in spectral parameters. Our results show that internal rotation, like a probe, can sample the immediate surroundings with high sensitivity to molecular-level changes that impact the rotation parameters. Our research offers a new perspective on the dielectric behavior of internal secondary relaxations and challenges the paradigm of their irrelevant nature.

Experimental examination of dipole-dipole cross-correlations by dielectric spectroscopy, depolarized dynamic light scattering, and computer simulations of molecular dynamics

The contribution of cross- and self-correlations to the dielectric and light-scattering spectra of supercooled polar glass formers has recently become a most challenging problem. Herein, we employ dielectric spectroscopy, depolarized dynamic light scattering (DDLS), and rheology to thoroughly examine the dynamics of van der Waals liquid 1,2-Diphenylvinylene. Carbonate (DVC), which is a polar counterpart of canonical glass former ortho-Terphenyl (OTP). We show that the light-scattering data correspond well with the dielectric permittivity function over a wide T range. This pattern is very different from the peaks' separation ω_{max}^{DDLS}/ω_{max}^{BDS}=3.7 reported recently for tributyl phosphate (TBP), despite the same dielectric characteristics of these two glass formers (β_{KWW}=0.75, Δɛ=20 for both TBP and DVC; KWW stands for Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts). This indicates different influence of orientational correlations in both methods for these two systems. We also show the results of the computer simulations of the model, polar molecules, which clearly indicate that the contribution of the cross-term to the correlation function probed in the DDLS experiment can be significant.

Temperature-dependent dielectric relaxation measurements of (acetamide + K/Na SCN) deep eutectic solvents: Decoding the impact of cation identity via computer simulations

The impact of successive replacement of K+ by Na+ on the megahertz-gigahertz polarization response of 0.25[fKSCN + (1 - f)NaSCN] + 0.75CH3CONH2 deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was explored via temperature-dependent (303 ≤ T/K ≤ 343) dielectric relaxation (DR) measurements and computer simulations. Both the DR measurements (0.2 ≤ ν/GHz ≤ 50) and the simulations revealed multi-Debye relaxations accompanied by a decrease in the solution static dielectric constant (ɛs) upon the replacement of K+ by Na+. Accurate measurements of the DR response of DESs below 100 MHz were limited by the well-known one-over-frequency divergence for conducting solutions. This problem was tackled in simulations by removing the zero frequency contributions arising from the ion current to the total simulated DR response. The temperature-dependent measurements revealed a much stronger viscosity decoupling of DR times for Na+-containing DES than for the corresponding K+ system. The differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicated a higher glass transition temperature for Na+-DES (∼220 K) than K+-DES (∼200 K), implying more fragility and cooperativity for the former (Na+-DES) than the latter. The computer simulations revealed a gradual decrease in the average number of H bonds (⟨nHB⟩) per acetamide molecule and increased frustrations in the average orientational order upon the replacement of K+ by Na+. Both the measured and simulated ɛs values were found to decrease linearly with ⟨nHB⟩. Decompositions of the simulated DR spectra revealed that the cation-dependent cross interaction (dipole-ion) term contributes negligibly to ɛs and appears in the terahertz regime. Finally, the simulated collective single-particle reorientational relaxations and the structural H-bond fluctuation dynamics revealed the microscopic origin of the cation identity dependence shown by the measured DR relaxation times.

Glass spectrum, excess wing phenomenon, and master curves in molecular glass formers: A multi-method approach

The relaxation spectra of glass formers solely displaying an α-peak and excess wing contribution collected by various methods are reanalyzed to pin down their different spectral evolution. We show that master curve construction encompassing both α-peak and emerging excess wing works for depolarized light scattering (DLS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry. It reveals the self-part of the slow dynamics' spectrum. Master curves are to be understood as a result of a more extensive scaling covering all temperatures instead of strict frequency-temperature superposition. DLS and NMR display identical relaxation spectra; yet, comparing different systems, we do not find a generic structural relaxation at variance with recent claims. Dielectric spectroscopy (DS) spectra show particularities, which render master curve construction obsolete. The DS α-peak is enhanced or suppressed with respect to that of DLS or NMR, yet, not correlated to the polarity of the liquid. Attempting to single out the excess wing from the overall spectrum discloses a stronger exponential temperature dependence of its amplitude compared to that below Tg and a link between its exponent and that of the fast dynamics' spectrum. Yet, such a decomposition of α-peak and excess wing appears to be unphysical. Among many different glasses, the amplitude of the excess wing power-law spectrum is found to be identical at Tg, interpreted as a relaxation analog to the Lindemann criterion.

The influence of molecular shape on reorientation dynamics of sizable glass-forming isomers at ambient and elevated pressure

We used dielectric spectroscopy to access the molecular dynamics of three isomers with a structure based on a sizable, partially rigid, and non-polar core connected to a polar phenylene unit differing in the position of the polar group, and, consequently, the direction and magnitude of the dipole moment to address the question how unique molecular properties, in particular large size and elongated shape, affect the dynamics. The position of the polar group differentiates the molecular shape and isomer's anisotropy and leads to different thermal and dynamic properties of the isomers. The shape of permittivity loss spectra was governed by magnitudes of the longitudinal and transverse components of dipole moment to a large extent. For para isomer with negligible traverse component of dipole moment, the narrowest loss peak was found while for meta isomer, the bimodal loss peak was observed at high temperatures. Its shape evolved on cooling limiting the possibility of individual mode separation near glass transition where the dynamics were more cooperative. High-pressure dielectric studies showed that sizable isomers were characterized by the pronounced sensitivity of glass transition temperature, Tg, to compression. Observed high activation volumes, such as 735 cm3/mol at Tg for para isomer, were found to correlate with the length scale of dynamic cooperativity. The number of dynamically correlated molecules depended on molecular shape and varied among isomers while the determined values were much smaller than that reported for other glass-forming liquids. We discussed here the obtained results in the context of the specific properties of the systems studied showing the overriding role of anisotropy.

Dielectric Spectroscopy Studies of Conformational Relaxation Dynamics in Molecular Glass-Forming Liquids

We review experimental results obtained with broadband dielectric spectroscopy concerning the relaxation times and activation energies of intramolecular conformational relaxation processes in small-molecule glass-formers. Such processes are due to the interconversion between different conformers of relatively flexible molecules, and generally involve conformational changes of flexible chain or ring moieties, or else the rigid rotation of planar groups, such as conjugated phenyl rings. Comparative analysis of molecules possessing the same (type of) functional group is carried out in order to test the possibility of assigning the dynamic conformational isomerism of given families of organic compounds to the motion of specific molecular subunits. These range from terminal halomethyl and acetyl/acetoxy groups to both rigid and flexible ring structures, such as the planar halobenzene cycles or the buckled saccharide and diazepine rings. A short section on polyesters provides a generalisation of these findings to synthetic macromolecules.

Molecular Dynamics and Near-Tg Phenomena of Cyclic Thioethers

This article presents the synthesis and molecular dynamics investigation of three novel cyclic thioethers: 2,3-(4'-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10-tetrathiacyclododeca-2-ene (compound 1), 2,3,14,15-bis(4',4″(5″)-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25-octathiacyclotetracosa-2,14-diene (compound 2), and 2,3,8,9-bis(4',4″(5″)-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10-tetrathiacyclododeca-2,8-diene (compound 3). The compounds exhibit relatively high glass transition temperatures (Tg), which range between 254 and 283 K. This characteristic positions them within the so-far limited category of crown-like glass-formers. We demonstrate that cyclic thioethers may span both the realms of ordinary and sizeable molecular glass-formers, each featuring distinct physical properties. Furthermore, we show that the Tg follows a sublinear power law as a function of the molar mass within this class of compounds. We also reveal multiple dielectric relaxation processes of the novel cyclic thioethers. Above the Tg, their dielectric loss spectra are dominated by a structural relaxation, which originates from the cooperative reorientation of entire molecules and exhibits an excess wing on its high-frequency slope. This feature has been attributed to the Johari-Goldstein (JG) process. Each investigated compound exhibits also at least one intramolecular secondary non-JG relaxation stemming from conformational changes. Their activation energies range from approximately 19 kJ/mol to roughly 40 kJ/mol. Finally, we analyze the high-pressure molecular dynamics of compound 1, revealing a pressure-induced increase in its Tg with a dTg/dp coefficient equal to 197 ± 8 K/GPa.

Orientational dynamics in supercooled glycerol computed from MD simulations: self and cross contributions

The orientational dynamics of supercooled glycerol is probed using molecular dynamics simulations for temperatures ranging from 323 K to 253 K, through correlation functions of first and second ranks of Legendre polynomials, pertaining respectively to dielectric spectroscopy (DS) and depolarized dynamic light scattering (DDLS). The self, cross, and total correlation functions are compared with relevant experimental data. The computations reveal the low sensitivity of DDLS to cross-correlations, in agreement with what is found in experimental work, and strengthen the idea of directly comparing DS and DDLS data to evaluate the effect of cross-correlations in polar liquids. The analysis of the net static cross-correlations and their spatial decomposition shows that, although cross-correlations extend over nanometric distances, their net magnitude originates, in the case of glycerol, from the first shell of neighbouring molecules. Accessing the angular dependence of the static correlation allows us to get a microscopic understanding of why the rank-1 correlation function is more sensitive to cross-correlation than its rank-2 counterpart.

Amorphous solid dispersions of curcumin in a poly(ester amide): Antiplasticizing effect on the glass transition and macromolecular relaxation dynamics, and controlled release

In order to exploit the pharmacological potential of natural bioactive molecules with low water solubility, such as curcumin, it is necessary to develop formulations, such as amorphous polymer dispersions, which allow a constant release rate and at the same time avoid possible toxicity effects of the crystalline form of the molecule under scrutiny. In this study, polymer dispersions of curcumin were obtained in PADAS, a biodegradable semicrystalline copolymer based on 1,12-dodecanediol, sebacic acid and alanine. The dispersions were fully characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry and broadband dielectric spectroscopy, and the drug release profile was measured in a simulated body fluid. Amorphous homogeneous binary dispersions were obtained for curcumin mass fraction between 30 and 50%. Curcumin has significantly higher glass transition temperature Tg (≈ 347 K) than the polymer matrix (≈274-277 K depending on the molecular weight), and dispersions displayed Tg's intermediate between those of the pure amorphous components, implying that curcumin acts as an effective antiplasticizer for PADAS. Dielectric spectroscopy was employed to assess the relaxation dynamics of the binary dispersion with 30 wt% curcumin, as well as that of each (amorphous) component separately. The binary dispersion was characterized by a single structural relaxation, a single Johari-Goldstein process, and two local intramolecular processes, one for each component. Interestingly, the latter processes scaled with the Tg of the sample, indicating that they are viscosity-sensitive. In addition, both the pristine polymer and the dispersion exhibited an interfacial Maxwell-Wagner relaxation, likely due to spatial heterogeneities associated with phase disproportionation in this polymer. The release of curcumin from the dispersion in a simulated body fluid followed a Fickian diffusion profile, and 51% of the initial curcumin content was released in 48 h.

High-pressure studies in the supercooled and glassy state of the strongly associated active pharmaceutical ingredient-ticagrelor

In this paper, the molecular dynamics at different thermodynamic conditions of hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) active pharmaceutical ingredient-ticagrelor (TICA) have been investigated. Extensive high-pressure (HP) dielectric studies revealed surprising high sensitivity of the structural (α)-relaxation to compression. They also showed that unexpectedly the shape of the α-peak remains invariable at various temperature (T) and pressure (p) conditions at constant α-relaxation time. Further infrared measurements on the ordinary and pressure densified glasses of the examined compound indicated that the hydrogen-bonding pattern in TICA is unchanged by the applied experimental conditions. Such behavior was in contrast to that observed recently for ritonavir (where the organization of hydrogen bonds varied at high p) and explained the lack of changes in the width of α-dispersion with compression. Moreover, HP dielectric measurements performed in the glassy state of TICA revealed the high sensitivity of the slow secondary (β)-relaxation (Johari-Goldstein type) to pressure and fulfillment of the isochronal superpositioning of α- and JG-β-relaxation times. Additionally, it was found that the activation entropy for the β-process, estimated from the Eyring equation (a high positive value at 0.1 MPa) slightly increases with compression. We suggested that the reason for that are probably small conformational variations of TICA molecules at elevated p.

Understanding Fenofibrate Release from Bare and Modified Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

To investigate the impact of the surface functionalization of mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) carriers in the physical state, molecular mobility and the release of Fenofibrate (FNB) MSNs with ordered cylindrical pores were prepared. The surface of the MSNs was modified with either (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) or trimethoxy(phenyl)silane (TMPS), and the density of the grafted functional groups was quantified via ¹H-NMR. The incorporation in the ~3 nm pores of the MSNs promoted FNB amorphization, as evidenced via FTIR, DSC and dielectric analysis, showing no tendency to undergo recrystallization in opposition to the neat drug. Moreover, the onset of the glass transition was slightly shifted to lower temperatures when the drug was loaded in unmodified MSNs, and MSNs modified with APTES composite, while it increased in the case of TMPS-modified MSNs. Dielectric studies have confirmed these changes and allowed researchers to disclose the broad glass transition in multiple relaxations associated with different FNB populations. Moreover, DRS showed relaxation processes in dehydrated composites associated with surface-anchored FNB molecules whose mobility showed a correlation with the observed drug release profiles.

Uncovering the bridging role of slow atoms in unusual caged dynamics and β-relaxation of binary metallic glasses

The origin of β-relaxation in metallic glasses is still not fully understood, and the guidance of slow atoms for caged dynamics and β-relaxation is rarely mentioned. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal the bridging role of slow atoms on unusual caged dynamics and β-relaxation. In the stage of unusual caged dynamics, slow atoms are bounded by neighboring atoms. It is difficult for the slow atoms to break the cage, producing more high-frequency vibration, which causes more atoms to jump out of the cage randomly in the next stage. Precisely, the movement of the slow atoms changes from individual atoms vibrating inside the cage and gradually breaking out of the cage into a string-like pattern. The string-like collective atomic jumps cause decay of the cages, inducing β-relaxation. This situation generally exists in binary systems with the large atomic mass difference. This work offers valuable insights for understanding the role of slow atoms in unusual caged dynamics and β-relaxation, complementing studies on the origin of β-relaxation in metallic glasses and their glass-forming liquids.

Johari-Goldstein β relaxation in glassy dynamics originates from two-scale energy landscape

Supercooled liquids undergo complicated structural relaxation processes, which have been a long-standing problem in both experimental and theoretical aspects of condensed matter physics. In particular, past experiments widely observed for many types of molecular liquids that relaxation dynamics separated into two distinct processes at low temperatures. One of the possible interpretations is that this separation originates from the two-scale hierarchical topography of the potential energy landscape; however, it has never been verified. Molecular dynamics simulations are a promising approach to tackle this issue, but we must overcome laborious difficulties. First, we must handle a model of molecular liquids that is computationally demanding compared to simple spherical models, which have been intensively studied but show only a slower process: α relaxation. Second, we must reach a sufficiently low-temperature regime where the two processes become well-separated. Here, we handle an asymmetric dimer system that exhibits a faster process: Johari-Goldstein β relaxation. Then, we employ the parallel tempering method to access the low-temperature regime. These laborious efforts enable us to investigate the potential energy landscape in detail and unveil the first direct evidence of the topographic hierarchy that induces the β relaxation. We also successfully characterize the microscopic motions of particles during each relaxation process. Finally, we study the correlation between low-frequency modes and two relaxation processes. Our results establish a fundamental and comprehensive understanding of experimentally observed relaxation dynamics in supercooled liquids.

Molecular Dynamics and Diffusion in Amorphous Solid Dispersions Containing Imidacloprid

The main goal of this study is to develop an experimental toolbox to estimate the self-diffusion coefficient of active ingredients (AI) in single-phase amorphous solid dispersions (ASD) close to the glass transition of the mixture using dielectric spectroscopy (DS) and oscillatory rheology. The proposed methodology is tested for a model system containing the insecticide imidacloprid (IMI) and the copolymer copovidone (PVP/VA) prepared via hot-melt extrusion. For this purpose, reorientational and the viscoelastic structural (α-)relaxation time constants of hot-melt-extruded ASDs were obtained via DS and shear rheology, respectively. These were then utilized to extract the viscosity as well as the fragility index of the dispersions as input parameters to the fractional Stokes-Einstein (F-SE) relation. Furthermore, a modified version of Almond-West (AW) formalism, originally developed to describe charge diffusion in ionic conductors, was exercised on the present model system for the estimation of the AI diffusion coefficients based on shear modulus relaxation times. Our results revealed that, at the calorimetric glass-transition temperature (T_g), the self-diffusion coefficients of the AI in the compositional range from infinite dilution up to 60 wt % IMI content lied in the narrow range of 10^-18-10^-20 m² s^-1, while the viscosity values of the dispersions at T_g varied between 10⁸ Pa s and 10¹⁰ Pa s. In addition, the phase diagram of the IMI-PVP/VA system was determined using the melting point depression method via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), while mid-infrared (IR) spectroscopy was employed to investigate the intermolecular interactions within the solid dispersions. In this respect, the findings of a modest variation in melting point at different compositions stayed in agreement with the observations of weak hydrogen bonding interactions between the AI and the polymer. Moreover, IR spectroscopy showed the intermolecular IMI-IMI hydrogen bonding to have been considerably suppressed, as a result of the spatial separation of the AI molecules within the ASDs. In summary, this study provides experimental approaches to study diffusivity in ASDs using DS and oscillatory rheology, in addition to contributing to an enhanced understanding of the interactions and phase behavior in these systems.

Eutectic Mixture Formation and Relaxation Dynamics of Coamorphous Mixtures of Two Benzodiazepine Drugs

The formation of coamorphous mixtures of pharmaceuticals is an interesting strategy to improve the solubility and bioavailability of drugs, while at the same time enhancing the kinetic stability of the resulting binary glass and allowing the simultaneous administration of two active principles. In this contribution, we describe kinetically stable amorphous binary mixtures of two commercial active pharmaceutical ingredients, diazepam and nordazepam, of which the latter, besides being administered as a drug on its own, is also the main active metabolite of the other in the human body. We report the eutectic equilibrium-phase diagram of the binary mixture, which is found to be characterized by an experimental eutectic composition of 0.18 molar fraction of nordazepam, with a eutectic melting point of T_e = 395.4 ± 1.2 K. The two compounds are barely miscible in the crystalline phase. The mechanically obtained mixtures were melted and supercooled to study the glass-transition and molecular-relaxation dynamics of amorphous mixtures at the corresponding concentration. The glass-transition temperature was always higher than room temperature and varied linearly with composition. The T_e was lower than the onset of thermal decomposition of either compound (pure nordazepam decomposes upon melting and pure diazepam well above its melting point), thus implying that the eutectic liquid and glass can be obtained without any degradation of the drugs. The eutectic glass was kinetically stable against crystallization for at least a few months. The relaxation processes of the amorphous mixtures were studied by dielectric spectroscopy, which provided evidence for a single structural (α) relaxation, a single Johari-Goldstein (β) relaxation, and a ring-inversion conformational relaxation of the diazepinic ring, occurring on the same timescale in both drugs. We further characterized both the binary mixtures and pure compounds by FTIR spectroscopy and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) simulations to analyze intermolecular interactions. The DFT calculations confirm the presence of strong attractive forces within the heteromolecular dimer, leading to large dimer interaction energies of the order of -0.1 eV.

Fractional Coupling of Primary and Johari-Goldstein Relaxations in a Model Polymer

A polymer model exhibiting heterogeneous Johari−Goldstein (JG) secondary relaxation is studied by extensive molecular-dynamics simulations of states with different temperature and pressure. Time−temperature−pressure superposition of the primary (segmental) relaxation is evidenced. The time scales of the primary and the JG relaxations are found to be highly correlated according to a power law. The finding agrees with key predictions of the Coupling Model (CM) accounting for the decay in a correlation function due to the relaxation and diffusion of interacting systems. Nonetheless, the exponent of the power law, even if it is found in the range predicted by CM (0<ξ<1), deviates from the expected one. It is suggested that the deviation could depend on the particular relaxation process involved in the correlation function and the heterogeneity of the JG process.

Highly tunable β-relaxation enables the tailoring of crystallization in phase-change materials

In glasses, secondary (β-) relaxations are the predominant source of atomic dynamics. Recently, they have been discovered in covalently bonded glasses, i.e., amorphous phase-change materials (PCMs). However, it is unclear what the mechanism of β-relaxations is in covalent systems and how they are related to crystallization behaviors of PCMs that are crucial properties for non-volatile memories and neuromorphic applications. Here we show direct evidence that crystallization is strongly linked to β-relaxations. We find that the β-relaxation in Ge15Sb85 possesses a high tunability, which enables a manipulation of crystallization kinetics by an order of magnitude. In-situ synchrotron X-ray scattering, dielectric functions, and ab-initio calculations indicate that the weakened β-relaxation intensity stems from a local reinforcement of Peierls-like distortions, which increases the rigidity of the bonding network and decreases the dynamic heterogeneity. Our findings offer a conceptually new approach to tuning the crystallization of PCMs based on manipulating the β-relaxations.

Relaxation and Amorphous Structure of Polymers Containing Rigid Fumarate Segments

The physical properties of polymers are significantly affected by relaxation processes. Recently, we reported that poly(diethyl fumarate) (PDEF) shows two thermal anomalies on DSC measurement, despite the fact that it is a homopolymer. We attribute these two relaxations α relaxation and β relaxation, respectively. In this study, we investigate the two relaxations of fumarate-containing polymers by DSC, solid-state NMR, and X-ray scattering. The two relaxations are present even in a copolymer of diethyl fumarate and ethyl acrylate with fumarate segments of 30%. We used poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as a model polymer for comparison, since there are detailed investigations of its dynamics and physical properties. Solid-state NMR indicates that the very local relaxation of poly(fumarate)s is not significantly different from that of PMMA. The tensile test showed that PDEF is still brittle at above β relaxation temperature and below α relaxation temperature. It was revealed that a structural anisotropy appeared when PDEF was extended at around α relaxation temperature. We discuss the effect of the glassy packing of the rigid polymer chain including the DEF segments on the strong β relaxation behavior. Our data provide insight into the microscopic mechanism of β relaxation of vinyl polymers.

Complementarity of mDSC, DMA, and DRS Techniques in the Study of Tg and Sub-Tg Transitions in Amorphous Solids: PVPVA, Indomethacin, and Amorphous Solid Dispersions Based on Indomethacin/PVPVA

Recently, glasses, a subset of amorphous solids, have gained attention in various fields, such as polymer chemistry, optical fibers, and pharmaceuticals. One of their characteristic features, the glass transition temperature (T_g) which is absent in 100% crystalline materials, influences several material properties, such as free volume, enthalpy, viscosity, thermodynamic transitions, molecular motions, physical stability, mechanical properties, etc. In addition to T_g, there may be several other temperature-dependent transitions known as sub-T_g transitions (or β-, γ-, and δ-relaxations) which are identified by specific analytical techniques. The study of T_g and sub-T_g transitions occurring in amorphous solids has gained much attention because of its importance in understanding molecular kinetics, and it requires the combination of conventional and novel characterization techniques. In the present study, three different analytical techniques [modulated differential scanning calorimetry (mDSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS)] were used to perform comprehensive qualitative/quantitative characterization of molecular relaxations, miscibility, and molecular interactions present in an amorphous polymer (PVPVA), a model drug (indomethacin, IND), and IND/PVPVA-based amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs). This is the first ever reported DMA study on PVPVA in its powder form, which avoids the contribution of solvent to the mechanical properties when a self-standing polymer film is used. A good correlation between the techniques in determining the T_g value of PVPVA, IND, and IND/PVPVA-based ASDs is established, and the negligible difference (within 10 °C) is attributed to the different material properties assessed in each technique. However, the overall T_g behavior, the decrease in T_g with increase in drug loading in ASDs, is universally observed in all the above-mentioned techniques, which reveals their complementarity. DMA and DRS techniques are used to study the different sub-T_g transitions present in PVPVA, amorphous IND, and IND/PVPVA-based ASDs because these transitions are normally too weak or too broad for mDSC to detect. For IND/PVPVA-based ASDs, both techniques show a shift of sub-T_g transitions (or secondary relaxation peaks) toward the high-temperature region from -140 to -45 °C. Thus, this paper outlines the usage of different solid-state characterization techniques in understanding the different molecular dynamics present in the polymer, drug, and their interactions in ASDs with the integrated information obtained from individual techniques.

Probing Adaptation of Hydration and Protein Dynamics to Temperature

Protein dynamics is strongly influenced by the surrounding environment and physiological conditions. Here we employ broadband megahertz-to-terahertz spectroscopy to explore the dynamics of water and myoglobin protein on an extended time scale from femto- to nanosecond. The dielectric spectra reveal several relaxations corresponding to the orientational polarization mechanism, including the dynamics of loosely bound, tightly bound, and bulk water, as well as collective vibrational modes of protein in an aqueous environment. The dynamics of loosely bound and bulk water follow non-Arrhenius behavior; however, the dynamics of water molecules in the tightly bound layer obeys the Arrhenius-type relation. Combining molecular simulations and effective-medium approximation, we have determined the number of water molecules in the tightly bound hydration layer and studied the dynamics of protein as a function of temperature. The results provide the important impact of water on the biochemical functions of proteins.

Relaxation Dynamics of Biomass-Derived Copolymers With Promising Gas-Barrier Properties

This article presents an experimental study on the relaxation dynamics of a series of random copolymers based on bio-friendly comonomers with interesting gas barrier properties. We analyze the relaxation response in the glassy and ultraviscous regime of poly (trimethylene furanoate/sebacate) random copolymers via dielectric spectroscopy. We report lower values of dynamic fragility [a dimensionless index introduced in 1985 (Angell, Relaxations in Complex Systems, 1985)] in comparison to popular polyesters widely used in industry, such as poly (ethylene terephthalate), suggesting that the amorphous phase of these furanoate-based polyesters adopt an efficient chain packing. This is consistent with their low permeability to gases. We also discuss on different equations (phenomenological and theory-based approaches) for fitting the temperature-evolution of the alpha relaxation time.

Stereoregulation, molecular weight, and dispersity control of PMMA synthesized via free-radical polymerization supported by the external high electric field

We show the remarkable effect of using static (DC) and alternating (AC) electric fields to control the free-radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). The magnitude and/or frequency of the applied electric field (up to 154 kV cm^-1) were found to control the molecular weight, dispersity, and stereochemistry of the produced polymers.

NMR Relaxometry Accessing the Relaxation Spectrum in Molecular Glass Formers

It is a longstanding question whether universality or specificity characterize the molecular dynamics underlying the glass transition of liquids. In particular, there is an ongoing debate to what degree the shape of dynamical susceptibilities is common to various molecular glass formers. Traditionally, results from dielectric spectroscopy and light scattering have dominated the discussion. Here, we show that nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), primarily field-cycling relaxometry, has evolved into a valuable method, which provides access to both translational and rotational motions, depending on the probe nucleus. A comparison of ¹H NMR results indicates that translation is more retarded with respect to rotation for liquids with fully established hydrogen-bond networks; however, the effect is not related to the slow Debye process of, for example, monohydroxy alcohols. As for the reorientation dynamics, the NMR susceptibilities of the structural (α) relaxation usually resemble those of light scattering, while the dielectric spectra of especially polar liquids have a different broadening, likely due to contributions from cross correlations between different molecules. Moreover, NMR relaxometry confirms that the excess wing on the high-frequency flank of the α-process is a generic relaxation feature of liquids approaching the glass transition. However, the relevance of this feature generally differs between various methods, possibly because of their different sensitivities to small-amplitude motions. As a major advantage, NMR is isotope specific; hence, it enables selective studies on a particular molecular entity or a particular component of a liquid mixture. Exploiting these possibilities, we show that the characteristic Cole-Davidson shape of the α-relaxation is retained in various ionic liquids and salt solutions, but the width parameter may differ for the components. In contrast, the low-frequency flank of the α-relaxation can be notably broadened for liquids in nanoscopic confinements. This effect also occurs in liquid mixtures with a prominent dynamical disparity in their components.

Arriving at the most plausible interpretation of the dielectric spectra of glycerol with help from quasielastic γ-ray scattering time-domain interferometry

Glycerol is one of the glass-forming liquids selected by Robert H. Cole in 1950 to start his study of molecular dynamics by dielectric spectroscopy. Seventy-one years have gone by and remarkably no consensus has been reached on the nature and identity of the relaxation processes observed in the dielectric spectra. The macroscopic dielectric relaxation data allow different interpretations to yield contrasting results, and it is not possible to determine which one is most plausible. Coming to the rescue is the application of the nuclear γ-resonance time-domain interferometry (TDI) to glycerol by Saito et al. [Phys. Rev. E 105, L012605 (2022)10.1103/PhysRevE.105.L012605]. Their microscopic TDI data potentially can decide which interpretation of the dielectric spectra of glycerol is most plausible. The attempt was made by Saito et al., but there is a problem in their analysis of the dielectric data of glycerol and hence their conclusion is untenable. In this paper, we critically compare four major interpretations with the TDI data in an effort to identify the most plausible interpretation of the relaxation processes constituting the dielectric spectra of glycerol.

Drug-Biopolymer Dispersions: Morphology- and Temperature- Dependent (Anti)Plasticizer Effect of the Drug and Component-Specific Johari-Goldstein Relaxations

Amorphous molecule-macromolecule mixtures are ubiquitous in polymer technology and are one of the most studied routes for the development of amorphous drug formulations. For these applications it is crucial to understand how the preparation method affects the properties of the mixtures. Here, we employ differential scanning calorimetry and broadband dielectric spectroscopy to investigate dispersions of a small-molecule drug (the Nordazepam anxiolytic) in biodegradable polylactide, both in the form of solvent-cast films and electrospun microfibres. We show that the dispersion of the same small-molecule compound can have opposite (plasticizing or antiplasticizing) effects on the segmental mobility of a biopolymer depending on preparation method, temperature, and polymer enantiomerism. We compare two different chiral forms of the polymer, namely, the enantiomeric pure, semicrystalline L-polymer (PLLA), and a random, fully amorphous copolymer containing both L and D monomers (PDLLA), both of which have lower glass transition temperature (T_g) than the drug. While the drug has a weak antiplasticizing effect on the films, consistent with its higher T_g, we find that it actually acts as a plasticizer for the PLLA microfibres, reducing their T_g by as much as 14 K at 30%-weight drug loading, namely, to a value that is lower than the T_g of fully amorphous films. The structural relaxation time of the samples similarly depends on chemical composition and morphology. Most mixtures displayed a single structural relaxation, as expected for homogeneous samples. In the PLLA microfibres, the presence of crystalline domains increases the structural relaxation time of the amorphous fraction, while the presence of the drug lowers the structural relaxation time of the (partially stretched) chains in the microfibres, increasing chain mobility well above that of the fully amorphous polymer matrix. Even fully amorphous homogeneous mixtures exhibit two distinct Johari-Goldstein relaxation processes, one for each chemical component. Our findings have important implications for the interpretation of the Johari-Goldstein process as well as for the physical stability and mechanical properties of microfibres with small-molecule additives.

Comparative study of electrooptic, dielectric, and structural properties of two glassforming antiferroelectric mixtures with a high tilt angle

Vitrification of the antiferroelectric smectic-C_{A}^{*} phase is reported for the orthoconic mixture W-1000 and its new derivative W-356. The crystallization is not observed even upon slow cooling and the cold crystallization on subsequent heating is also absent. Molecular dynamics in the smectic phases of both mixtures is investigated down to 173 K and the fragility parameters are determined from the temperature behavior of the α-process. X-ray diffraction is applied to compare the structural parameters of W-356 and W-1000 as well as to study the structural changes during the glass transition of the Sm-C_{A}^{*} phase. The evolution of the smectic layer order within the Sm-C_{A}^{*} glass is reported, while the correlation length of the short-range order in the smectic layers is shown to be almost constant below the glass transition temperature. Electrooptic properties of W-356: spontaneous polarization, tilt angle and switching time are determined and compared with these of W-1000. The observed differences between the properties of W-356 and W-1000 might be explained by the dimer formation of components with the -C≡N terminal group, present only in the W-356 mixture, and by the different structure of the aromatic molecular core in one of the W-356 components.

Probing Small-Angle Molecular Motions with EPR Spectroscopy: Dynamical Transition and Molecular Packing in Disordered Solids

Disordered molecular solids present a rather broad class of substances of different origin—amorphous polymers, materials for photonics and optoelectronics, amorphous pharmaceutics, simple molecular glass formers, and others. Frozen biological media in many respects also may be referred to this class. Theoretical description of dynamics and structure of disordered solids still does not exist, and only some phenomenological models can be developed to explain results of particular experiments. Among different experimental approaches, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) applied to spin probes and labels also can deliver useful information. EPR allows probing small-angle orientational molecular motions (molecular librations), which intrinsically are inherent to all molecular solids. EPR is employed in its conventional continuous wave (CW) and pulsed—electron spin echo (ESE)—versions. CW EPR spectra are sensitive to dynamical librations of molecules while ESE probes stochastic molecular librations. In this review, different manifestations of small-angle motions in EPR of spin probes and labels are discussed. It is shown that CW-EPR-detected dynamical librations provide information on dynamical transition in these media, similar to that explored with neutron scattering, and ESE-detected stochastic librations allow elucidating some features of nanoscale molecular packing. The possible EPR applications are analyzed for gel-phase lipid bilayers, for biological membranes interacting with proteins, peptides and cryoprotectants, for supercooled ionic liquids (ILs) and supercooled deep eutectic solvents (DESs), for globular proteins and intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), and for some other molecular solids.

Isochronal superpositioning of the caged dynamics, the α, and the Johari-Goldstein β relaxations in metallic glasses

The superposition of the frequency dispersions of the structural α relaxation determined at different combinations of temperature T and pressure P while maintaining its relaxation time τ_α(T, P) constant (i.e., isochronal superpositioning) has been well established in molecular and polymeric glass-formers. Not known is whether the frequency dispersion or time dependence of the faster processes including the caged molecule dynamics and the Johari-Goldstein (JG) β relaxation possesses the same property. Experimental investigation of this issue is hindered by the lack of an instrument that can cover all three processes. Herein, we report the results from the study of the problem utilizing molecular dynamics simulations of two different glass-forming metallic alloys. The mean square displacement 〈Δr²t〉, the non-Gaussian parameter α₂t, and the self-intermediate scattering function F_sq,t at various combinations of T and P were obtained over broad time range covering the three processes. Isochronal superpositioning of 〈Δr²t〉, α₂t, and F_sq,t was observed over the entire time range, verifying that the property holds not only for the α relaxation but also for the caged dynamics and the JG β relaxation. Moreover, we successfully performed density ρ scaling of the time τ_α2,maxT,P at the peak of α₂t and the diffusion coefficient D(T, P) to show both are functions of ρ^γ/T with the same γ. It follows that the JG β relaxation time τ_β(T, P) is also a function of ρ^γ/T since τ_α2,maxT,P corresponds to τ_β(T, P).

Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Viscous Liquids: Relaxation Stretching of Single-Particle Probes

Spin-lattice relaxation rates R₁(ω,T), probed via high-field and field-cycling nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), are used to test the validity of frequency-temperature superposition (FTS) for the reorientation dynamics in viscous liquids. For several liquids, FTS is found to apply so that master curves can be generated. The susceptibility spectra are highly similar to those obtained from depolarized light scattering (DLS) and reveal an excess wing. Where FTS works, two approaches are suggested to access the susceptibility: (i) a plot of deuteron R₁(T) vs the spin-spin relaxation rate R₂(T) and (ii) a plot of R₁(T) vs an independently measured reference time τ_ref(T). Using single-frequency scans, (i) allows one to extract the relaxation stretching as well as the NMR coupling constant. Surveying 26 data sets, we find Kohlrausch functions with exponents 0.39 < β_K ≤ 0.67. Plots of the spin-spin relaxation rate R₂─rescaled by the NMR coupling constant─as a function of temperature allow one to test how well site-specific NMR relaxations couple to a given reference process. Upon cooling of flexible molecule liquids, the site-specific dynamics is found to merge, suggesting that near T_g the molecules reorient essentially as a rigid entity. This presents a possible resolution for the much lower stretching parameters reported here at high temperatures that contrast with the ones that were reported to be universal in a recent DLS study close to T_g. Our analysis underlines that deuteron relaxation is a uniquely powerful tool to probe single-particle reorientation.

Molecular Dynamics and Kinetics of Isothermal Cold Crystallization in the Chiral Smectogenic 3F7HPhH6 Glassformer

An investigation of the glass transition of the antiferroelectric smectic CA* phase and cold crystallization of (S)-4′-(1-methylheptylcarbonyl)biphenyl-4-yl 4-[7-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluoro- butoxy)heptyl-1-oxy]benzoate (denoted as 3F7HPhH6) by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and broadband dielectric spectroscopy is presented. The fragility index mf = 72, classifying 3F7HPhH6 as a glassformer with intermediate fragility, was obtained from the temperature dependence of the α-process relaxation time, measured upon cooling. Duplication of the α-process was observed exclusively upon heating, before the onset of cold crystallization, and is connected with the pre-transitional effect. The presence of two crystal phases likely influences the kinetics of cold crystallization; the idea stems from a comparison with previous results for the 3F7HPhF6 and 3F7HPhH7 compounds. Additionally, the presence of the smectic Cα* sub-phase in a narrow temperature range was proved based on the differential scanning calorimetry and broadband dielectric spectroscopy results, as well as the fractal dimension analysis of the textures obtained by polarizing optical microscopy.

Comparative analysis of dielectric, shear mechanical and light scattering response functions in polar supercooled liquids

The studies of molecular dynamics in the vicinity of liquid–glass transition are an essential part of condensed matter physics. Various experimental techniques are usually applied to understand different aspects of molecular motions, i.e., nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), mechanical shear relaxation (MR), and dielectric spectroscopy (DS). Universal behavior of molecular dynamics, reflected in the invariant distribution of relaxation times for different polar and weekly polar glass-formers, has been recently found when probed by NMR, PCS, and MR techniques. On the other hand, the narrow dielectric permittivity function ε*(f) of polar materials has been rationalized by postulating that it is a superposition of a Debye-like peak and a broader structural relaxation found in NMR, PCS, and MR. Herein, we show that dielectric permittivity representation ε*(f) reveals details of molecular motions being undetectable in the other experimental methods. Herein we propose a way to resolve this problem. First, we point out an unresolved Johari–Goldstein (JG) β-relaxation is present nearby the α-relaxation in these polar glass-formers. The dielectric relaxation strength of the JG β-relaxation is sufficiently weak compared to the α-relaxation so that the narrow dielectric frequency dispersion faithfully represents the dynamic heterogeneity and cooperativity of the α-relaxation. However, when the other techniques are used to probe the same polar glass-former, there is reduction of relaxation strength of α-relaxation relative to that of the JG β relaxation as well as their separation. Consequently the α relaxation appears broader in frequency dispersion when observed by PCS, NMR and MR instead of DS. The explanation is supported by showing that the quasi-universal broadened α relaxation in PCS, NMR and MR is captured by the electric modulus M*(f) = 1/ε*(f) representation of the dielectric measurements of polar and weakly polar glass-formers, and also M*(f) compares favorably with the mechanical shear modulus data G*(f).

The relaxation behavior of supercooled and glassy imidacloprid

Employing dielectric spectroscopy, oscillatory shear rheology, and calorimetry, the present work explores the molecular dynamics of the widely used insecticide imidacloprid above and below its glass transition temperature. In its supercooled liquid regime, the applied techniques yield good agreement regarding the characteristic structural (alpha) relaxation times of this material. In addition, the generalized Gemant-DiMarzio-Bishop model provides a good conversion between the frequency-dependent dielectric and shear mechanical responses in its viscous state, allowing for an assessment of imidacloprid's molecular hydrodynamic radius. In order to characterize the molecular dynamics in its glassy regime, we employ several approaches. These include the application of frequency-temperature superposition (FTS) to its isostructural dielectric and rheological responses as well as use of dielectric and calorimetric physical aging and the Adam-Gibbs-Vogel model. While the latter approach and dielectric FTS provide relaxation times that are close to each other, the other methods predict notably longer times that are closer to those reflecting a complete recovery of ergodicity. This seemingly conflicting dissimilarity demonstrates that the molecular dynamics of glassy imidacloprid strongly depends on its thermal history, with high relevance for the use of this insecticide as an active ingredient in technological applications.

Elastic and Dynamic Heterogeneity in Aging Alginate Gels

Anomalous aging in soft glassy materials has generated a great deal of interest because of some intriguing features of the underlying relaxation process, including the emergence of "ultra-long-range" dynamical correlations. An intriguing possibility is that such a huge correlation length is reflected in detectable ensemble fluctuations of the macroscopic material properties. We tackle this issue by performing replicated mechanical and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments on alginate gels, which recently emerged as a good model-system of anomalous aging. Here we show that some of the monitored quantities display wide variability, including large fluctuations in the stress relaxation and the occasional presence of two-step decay in the DLS decorrelation functions. By quantifying elastic fluctuation through the standard deviation of the elastic modulus and dynamic heterogeneities through the dynamic susceptibility, we find that both quantities do increase with the gel age over a comparable range. Our results suggest that large elastic fluctuations are closely related to ultra-long-range dynamical correlation, and therefore may be a general feature of anomalous aging in gels.

Inter-enantiomer conversion dynamics and Johari-Goldstein relaxation of benzophenones

We employ temperature- and pressure-dependent dielectric spectroscopy, as well as differential scanning calorimetry, to characterize benzophenone and the singly-substituted ortho-bromobenzophenone derivative in the liquid and glass states, and analyze the results in terms of the molecular conformations reported for these molecules. Despite the significantly higher mass of the brominated derivative, its dynamic and calorimetric glass transition temperatures are only ten degrees higher than those of benzophenone. The kinetic fragility index of the halogenated molecule is lower than that of the parent compound, and is found to decrease with increasing pressure. By a detailed analysis of the dielectric loss spectra, we provide evidence for the existence of a Johari-Goldstein (JG) relaxation in both compounds, thus settling the controversy concerning the possible lack of a JG process in benzophenone and confirming the universality of this dielectric loss feature in molecular glass-formers. Both compounds also display an intramolecular relaxation, whose characteristic timescale appears to be correlated with that of the cooperative structural relaxation associated with the glass transition. The limited molecular flexibility of ortho-bromobenzophenone allows identifying the intramolecular relaxation as the inter-enantiomeric conversion between two isoenergetic conformers of opposite chirality, which only differ in the sign of the angle between the brominated aryl ring and the coplanar phenyl-ketone subunit. The observation by dielectric spectroscopy of a similar relaxation also in liquid benzophenone indicates that the inter-enantiomer conversion between the two isoenergetic helicoidal ground-state conformers of opposite chirality occurs via a transition state characterized by a coplanar phenyl-ketone moiety.

Mutual Information in Molecular and Macromolecular Systems

The relaxation properties of viscous liquids close to their glass transition (GT) have been widely characterised by the statistical tool of time correlation functions. However, the strong influence of ubiquitous non-linearities calls for new, alternative tools of analysis. In this respect, information theory-based observables and, more specifically, mutual information (MI) are gaining increasing interest. Here, we report on novel, deeper insight provided by MI-based analysis of molecular dynamics simulations of molecular and macromolecular glass-formers on two distinct aspects of transport and relaxation close to GT, namely dynamical heterogeneity (DH) and secondary Johari–Goldstein (JG) relaxation processes. In a model molecular liquid with significant DH, MI reveals two populations of particles organised in clusters having either filamentous or compact globular structures that exhibit different mobility and relaxation properties. In a model polymer melt, MI provides clearer evidence of JG secondary relaxation and sharper insight into its DH. It is found that both DH and MI between the orientation and the displacement of the bonds reach (local) maxima at the time scales of the primary and JG secondary relaxation. This suggests that, in (macro)molecular systems, the mechanistic explanation of both DH and relaxation must involve rotation/translation coupling.
