Natural bond orbital/natural J-coupling study of vicinal couplings

NBO-NJC decomposition of vicinal (3)J HH spin-spin coupling constants into Lewis, delocalization, and repolarization contributions are presented. A deep study allows to assign the main contributions to specific orbitals or electron delocalizations between two orbitals. (3)J HH torsional dependence and the substituent effect are analyzed according to the main orbital contributions for ethane and fluoroethane molecules using different basis sets. The torsional dependence for the energies corresponding to electron delocalization is also studied.

(1)H, (13)C, (19)F and (11)B NMR spectral reference data of some potassium organotrifluoroborates

Complete (1)H, (13)C, (19)F and (11)B NMR spectral data for 28 potassium organotrifluoroborates are described. The resonance for the carbon bearing the boron atom is described for most of the studied compounds. A modified (11)B NMR pulse sequence was used and better resolution was observed allowing the observation of (11)B-(19)F coupling constants for some of the studied compounds.

Interaction Energies and NMR Indirect Nuclear Spin−Spin Coupling Constants in Linear HCN and HNC Complexes

The cooperativity effects on both the electronic energy and NMR indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling constants J of the linear complexes (HCN)n and (HNC)n (n = 1-6) are discussed. The geometries of the complexes were optimized at the MP2 level by using the cc-pVTZ basis sets. The spin-spin coupling constants were calculated at the level of the second-order polarization propagator approximation with use of the local dense basis set scheme based on the cc-pVTZ-J basis sets. We find strong correlations in the patterns of different properties such as interaction energy, hydrogen bond distances, and spin-spin coupling constants for both series of compounds. The intramolecular spin-spin couplings are with two exceptions dominated by the Fermi contact (FC) mechanism, while the FC term is the only nonvanishing contribution for the intermolecular couplings. The latter do not follow the Dirac vector model and are important only between nearest neighbors.

Synthesis, Structure, and 19F NMR Spectra of 1,3,7,10,14,17,23,28,31,40-C60(CF3)10

A significant improvement in the selectivity of fullerene trifluoromethylation reactions was achieved. Reaction of trifluoroiodomethane with [60]fullerene at 460 degrees C and [70]fullerene at 470 degrees C in a flow reactor led to isolation of cold-zone-condensed mixtures of C60(CF3)n and C70(CF3)n compounds with narrow composition ranges: 6 < or = n < or = 12 for C(60)(CF3)n and 8 < or = n < or = 14 for C70(CF3)n. The predominant products in the C(60) reaction, an estimated 40+ mol % of the cold-zone condensate, were three isomers of C60(CF3)10. Two of these were purified by two-stage HPLC to 80+% isomeric purity. The third isomer was purified by three-stage HPLC to 95% isomeric purity. Thirteen milligrams of this orange-brown compound was isolated (5% overall yield based on C60, and its C1-symmetric structure was determined to be 1,3,7,10,14,17,23,28,31,40-C60(CF3)10 by X-ray crystallography. The CF3 groups are either meta or para to one another on a p-m-p-p-p-m-p-m-p ribbon of edge-sharing C6(CF3)2 hexagons (each pair of adjacent hexagons shares a common CF3 group). The selectivity of the C70 reaction was even higher. The predominant product was a single C70(CF3)10 isomer representing >40 mol % of the cold-zone condensate. Single-stage HPLC led to the isolation of 12 mg of this brown compound in 95% isomeric purity (27% overall yield based on converted C70. The new compounds were characterized by EI or S(8)-MALDI mass spectrometry and 2D-COSY 19F NMR spectroscopy. The NMR data demonstrate that through-space coupling via direct overlap of fluorine orbitals is the predominant contribution to J(FF) values in these and most other fullerene(CF3)n compounds.

Fluorine−Fluorine Spin−Spin Coupling Constants in Aromatic Compounds: Correlations with the Delocalization Index and with the Internuclear Separation

This paper describes a new empirical approach for the evaluation of fluorine-fluorine spin-spin coupling constants (J(FF)) in aromatic compounds. The correlations between J(FF) and the delocalization index calculated within the framework of the theory of atoms in molecules (AIM) and with the fluorine-fluorine internuclear separation are investigated. Both the internuclear separation and the delocalization index are found to be highly correlated with J(FF). A regression model in which the experimental J(FF) coupling constant is fitted exponentially to the internuclear separation and linearly to the delocalization index yields a squared correlation coefficient as high as 0.96 for a data set consisting of 33 coupling constants spread over a range of 85 Hz.
