Approaching Polymer Dynamics Combining Artificial Neural Networks and Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation

The analysis of structural relaxation dynamics of polymers gives an insight into their mechanical properties, whose characterization is used to qualify a given material for its practical scope. The dynamics are usually expressed in terms of the temperature dependence of the relaxation time, which is only available through time-consuming experimental processes following polymer synthesis. However, it would be advantageous to estimate their dynamics before synthesizing them when designing new materials. In this work, we propose a combined approach of artificial neural networks and the elastically collective nonlinear Langevin equation (ECNLE) to estimate the temperature dependence of the main structural relaxation time of polymers based only on the knowledge of the chemical structure of the corresponding monomer.

Insight into the Structure and Dynamics of Polymers by Neutron Scattering Combined with Atomistic Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Combining neutron scattering and fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations allows unraveling structural and dynamical features of polymer melts at different length scales, mainly in the intermolecular and monomeric range. Here we present the methodology developed by us and the results of its application during the last years in a variety of polymers. This methodology is based on two pillars: (i) both techniques cover approximately the same length and time scales and (ii) the classical van Hove formalism allows easily calculating the magnitudes measured by neutron scattering from the simulated atomic trajectories. By direct comparison with experimental results, the simulated cell is validated. Thereafter, the information of the simulations can be exploited, calculating magnitudes that are experimentally inaccessible or extending the parameters range beyond the experimental capabilities. We show how detailed microscopic insight on structural features and dynamical processes of various kinds has been gained in polymeric systems with different degrees of complexity, and how intriguing questions as the collective behavior at intermediate length scales have been faced.

Temperature effect on the electron–vibrational mode coupling of a fully conjugated polyfluorene derivative

The electron–vibrational mode coupling, Huang–Rhys parameter and polymer relaxations were directly correlated and used to explain the differences in the EL and PL processes.

Soft Nanocomposites--From Interface Control to Interphase Formation

We report measurements of structure, mechanical properties, glass transition temperature, and contact angle of a novel nanocomposite material consisting of swellable silsesquioxane nanoparticles with grafted poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) brushes and PEMA matrices with varying molecular weight. We measured the interparticle distance at the surface of the composites using scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and in the bulk of ∼0.5 μm thick films by grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). For a given molecular weight of the brush unstable dispersions at high molecular weight of the matrix indicate an intrinsic incompatibility between polymer-grafted-nanoparticles and homopolymer matrices. This incompatibility is affirmed by a high contact angle between the polymer-grafted-nanoparticles and the high molecular weight matrix as measured by SPM. For unstable dispersions, we measured a decreased glass transition temperature along with a decreased plateau modulus by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) which indicates the formation of a liquid-like layer at the brush-matrix interface. This proves the ability to decouple the structural and mechanical properties from the potential to be swollen with small molecules. It opens a new area of use of these soft nanocomposites as slow release materials with tailored mechanical properties.

Physical vapor deposition as a route to hidden amorphous states

Stable glasses of indomethacin (IMC) were prepared by using physical vapor deposition. Wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements were performed to characterize the average local structure. IMC glasses prepared at a substrate temperature of 0.84 T(g) (where T(g) is the glass transition temperature) and a deposition rate of 0.2 nm/s show a broad, high-intensity peak at low q values that is not present in the supercooled liquid or melt-quenched glasses. When annealed slightly above T(g), the new WAXS pattern transforms into the melt-quenched glass pattern, but only after very long annealing times. For a series of samples prepared at the lowest deposition rate, the new local packing arrangement is present only for deposition temperatures below T(g) -20 K, suggesting an underlying first-order liquid-to-liquid phase transition.

Orientation dynamics in isotropic phases of model oligofluorenes: Glass or liquid crystal

Orientation molecular dynamics were investigated in a series of "defect-free" oligofluorenes by depolarized dynamic light scattering and dynamic NMR spectroscopy. Typical liquid crystalline pretransitional dynamics were observed upon cooling the isotropic phase to the liquid crystalline phase with strong increase of the scattered intensity and slowing down of the characteristic time of the probed collective relaxation. This is well accounted for by the Landau-de Gennes theory, however, with a strong temperature dependence of the viscosity coefficient, reflecting the proximity of the glass transition. For the trimer the two transitions almost overlap and the molecular orientation coincide with the alpha-relaxation associated with the glass transition. The NMR measurements confirm that the time scale of the dynamics is completely governed by the glass process, yet the geometry of the motion is anisotropic, yielding order parameters ranging from 0.15 to 0.25 for the long axis in the liquid crystalline phase. The glass transition is therefore geometrically restricted with poorly ordered mesophase which is consistent with the weak transverse phonons in the light scattering experiment down to Tg+20 K.

Versatility of the dipolar filter selection: from 1H nuclear spin diffusion experiment to the measurement of nuclear Overhauser effect in homopolymer melts

Dipolar filters select 1H magnetization according to local dipolar dephasing, which corresponds to site mobility in systems with heterogeneous molecular mobility. Combined with a conventional exchange experiment, it is usually applied to polymeric samples exhibiting structures on the nanometer length scale associated with a strong dynamic contrast. There, the resulting 1H nuclear spin diffusion experiment yields the size of the structure. When the same experiment is applied to homopolymer melts exhibiting a weak dynamic contrast and dynamic heterogeneities on significant shorter length scales, the recorded magnetization decay is in agreement with decays expected from a heterogeneous nanostructure. However, dipolar filters actually can also select mobile parts of the repeat unit, e.g. the end of the alkyl side chains and the subsequent magnetization transfer then can occur via cross relaxation due to non coherent zero-quantum transitions (nuclear Overhauser effect, NOE). The difficulties of distinguishing these two cases are examined and it is demonstrated that NOE experiments exploiting magnetization selection via the dipolar filter allow quantifying the local dynamics of the side chains. This opens new possibilities for measurements of local dynamics in non isotopically labeled homopolymer melts.
