Abstract
In this work, we report the development and assessment of the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics approach with the electronic structure calculations based on the linearly scaling subsystem density functional method. The approach is implemented in an open-source embedded Quantum Espresso/Libra software specially designed for nonadiabatic dynamics simulations in extended systems. As proof of the applicability of this method to large condensed-matter systems, we examine the dynamics of nonradiative relaxation of excess excitation energy in pentacene crystals with the simulation supercells containing more than 600 atoms. We find that increased structural disorder observed in larger supercell models induces larger nonadiabatic couplings of electronic states and accelerates the relaxation dynamics of excited states. We conduct a comparative analysis of several quantum-classical trajectory surface hopping schemes, including two new methods proposed in this work (revised decoherence-induced surface hopping and instantaneous decoherence at frustrated hops). Most of the tested schemes suggest fast energy relaxation occurring with the timescales in the 0.7-2.0 ps range, but they significantly overestimate the ground state recovery rates. Only the modified simplified decay of mixing approach yields a notably slower relaxation timescales of 8-14 ps, with a significantly inhibited ground state recovery.

Abstract
We have developed a highly efficient computation method based on density functional theory (DFT) within a set of fully symmetrized basis functions for the C60 buckyball, which possesses the icosahedral (Ih) point-group symmetry with 120 symmetry operations. We demonstrate that our approach is much more efficient than the conventional approach based on three-dimensional plane waves. When applied to the calculation of optical transitions, our method is more than one order of magnitude faster than the existing DFT package with a conventional plane-wave basis. This makes it very convenient for modeling optical and transport properties of quantum devices related to buckyball crystals. The method introduced here can be easily extended to other fullerene-like materials.

Abstract
We present a two-level iterative solver for linear response time-dependent density functional theory by combining two forms of the Casida equation in the Kohn-Sham orbital representation and in Hutter's formulation. This two-level iterative solver has been implemented with the plane wave pseudopotential method for excited-state simulations of molecular and low-dimensional solid materials. Numerical studies with the Davidson algorithm demonstrate that this two-level iterative solver yields excited-state properties for molecules (benzene C6H6 and fullerene C60) and low-dimensional semiconductors [two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide MoS2 monolayer and rutile titanium dioxide TiO2(110) surface] with significantly reduced computational cost and storage requirement compared with standard iterative algorithms. We apply our approach to investigate the photoinduced charge separation of methanol molecules adsorption on the rutile TiO2(110) surface from the exciton perspective and validate that the photogenerated hole can be captured by methanol molecules.

Abstract
Inorganic-organic interfaces are important for enhancing the power conversion efficiency of silicon-based solar cells through singlet exciton fission (SF). We elucidated the structure of the first monolayers of tetracene (Tc), an SF molecule, on hydrogen-passivated Si(111) [H-Si(111)] and hydrogenated amorphous Si (a-Si:H) by combining near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For samples grown at or below substrate temperatures of 265 K, the resulting ultrathin Tc films are dominated by almost upright-standing molecules. The molecular arrangement is very similar to the Tc bulk phase, with only a slightly higher average angle between the conjugated molecular plane normal and the surface normal (α) around 77°. Judging from carbon K-edge X-ray absorption spectra, the orientation of the Tc molecules are almost identical when grown on H-Si(111) and a-Si:H substrates as well as for (sub)mono- to several-monolayer coverages. Annealing to room temperature, however, changes the film structure toward a smaller α of about 63°. A detailed DFT-assisted analysis suggests that this structural transition is correlated with a lower packing density and requires a well-chosen amount of thermal energy. Therefore, we attribute the resulting structure to a distinct monolayer configuration that features less inclined, but still well-ordered molecules. The larger overlap with the substrate wave functions makes this arrangement attractive for an optimized interfacial electron transfer in SF-assisted silicon solar cells.

Abstract
We demonstrate here that theory-assisted near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy enables the site-sensitive monitoring of on-surface chemical reactions, thus, providing information not accessible by other techniques. As a prototype example, we have used free-base 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corroles (3H-TpFPC) adsorbed on Ag(111) and present a detailed investigation of the angle-dependent NEXAFS of this molecular species as well as of their thermally induced derivatives. For this, we have recorded experimental C and N K-edge NEXAFS spectra and interpret them based on XAS cross-section calculations by using a continuous fraction approach and core-hole including multiprojector PAW pseudopotentials within DFT. We have characterized the as-deposited low temperature (200 K) phase and unraveled the subsequent changes induced by dehydrogenation (at 330 K) and ring-closure reactions (at 430 K). By exemplarily obtaining profound insight into the on-surface chemistry of free-base corrolic species adsorbed on a noble metal this work highlights how angle-dependent XAS combined with accurate theoretical modeling can serve for the investigation of on-surface reactions, whereby even highly similar molecular structures, such as tautomers and isomers, can be distinguished.

Abstract
Low solar energy harvesting and conversion efficiency has become a major problem in solar energy science and engineering owing to the difficulty in capturing solar energy across the wide solar spectrum, especially in the visible light range. Inspired by the extraordinary properties of materials arising from decreased dimensions, in this study, we explore a nanocontact system formed by a two-dimensional (2D) TiO2 monolayer and II-VI semiconductor (CdX)13 (X = S, Se, and Te) nanocages for engineering the visible light absorption. The nanocontact system, via either Ti-X or Cd-O bond coupling mechanism, forms an ideal type II band alignment, where the stronger donor-acceptor coupling in the Ti-X contact system more efficiently relaxes the coupled geometry and helps it to couple to more electrons, therefore leading to an enhancement of the absorption peaks in the visible frequency range. On changing the element X in (CdX)13 from S to Se then Te, a red shift of the visible light absorption peaks accompanied by stimulating optical response of the whole nanocontact system was observed. Nanocontacting semiconductors comprising low-dimensional (CdX)13 nanocage@TiO2 monolayer systems, which promote charge separation and optical absorption in the visible range that arise from the effects of adsorbent nature, decreasing size, and efficient interfacial coupling mechanism, are therefore promising photovoltaic and photocatalytic materials.

Abstract
Licht et al. (Science, 2014, 345, 637) recently proposed a procedure to synthesize NH3 from N2 and by steam electrolysis in molten hydroxide suspensions of nano-Fe2O3. This highly exciting investigation undoubtedly boosts the hope of the CO2-free and low-cost ammonia industry. To provide insights at the atomistic level into the reduction process of N2, we have carried out a density-functional study on the electrochemical formation of NH3 molecules on hematite(0001) surfaces. By considering associative and dissociative mechanisms, we have identified a reaction path that requires an applied bias of -1.1 V to allow the proton transfer processes to occur downhill. The most energy-demanding step is the addition of the first proton to the adsorbed molecular nitrogen. The computed bias is in good agreement with experimental electrolysis potentials that activate the electric current.

Abstract
We provide a physical explanation for the enhancement of the low-energy electron production by sensitizing nanoparticles due to irradiation by fast ions. It is demonstrated that a significant increase in the number of emitted electrons arises from the collective electron excitations in the nanoparticle. We predict a new mechanism of the yield enhancement due to the plasmon excitations and quantitatively estimate its contribution to the electron production. Revealing the nanoscale mechanism of the electron yield enhancement, we provide an efficient tool for evaluating the yield of the emitted electron from various sensitizers. It is shown that the number of low-energy electrons generated by the gold and platinum nanoparticles of a given size exceeds that produced by the equivalent volume of water and by other metallic (e.g., gadolinium) nanoparticles by an order of magnitude. This observation emphasizes the sensitization effect of the noble-metal nanoparticles and endorses their application in novel technologies of cancer therapy with ionizing radiation.

Abstract
We calculate the spatial distribution of the oscillating electron density for the low energy optical excitations in C(60), using ab initio time-dependent density functional theory. We contrast this with the unscreened free response of the Kohn-Sham eigenfunctions, in which the charge transfer is between hemispheres and the simple density oscillation patterns are very similar for electrons outside and inside the C(60) radius. In the screened case, the oscillation patterns involve charge transfer on the scale of interatomic distances. The exterior and interior densities play different roles in the oscillator strength and screening. Almost all of the dipole oscillation for optical absorption strength is from exterior electrons, a consequence of the superposition of π and σ electron oscillations. The lowest transition with appreciable strength is dominated by screening from π electrons.

Abstract
The recursion method of Haydock, Heine and Kelly is a powerful tool for calculating diagonal matrix elements of the resolvent of quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian operators by elegantly expressing them in terms of continued fractions. In this paper we extend the recursion method to off-diagonal matrix elements of general (possibly non-Hermitian) operators and apply it to the simulation of molecular optical absorption and photoemission spectra within time-dependent density-functional and many-body perturbation theories, respectively. This method is demonstrated with a couple of applications to the optical absorption and photoemission spectra of the caffeine molecule.

Abstract
We present the implementation of the time-dependent density-functional theory both in linear-response and in time-propagation formalisms using the projector augmented-wave method in real-space grids. The two technically very different methods are compared in the linear-response regime where we found perfect agreement in the calculated photoabsorption spectra. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the two methods as well as their convergence properties. We demonstrate different applications of the methods by calculating excitation energies and excited state Born-Oppenheimer potential surfaces for a set of atoms and molecules with the linear-response method and by calculating nonlinear emission spectra using the time-propagation method.
