Abstract
We report the photoelectron spectrum of the pyridyl radical (C5H4N), a species of interest in astrochemistry and combustion. The radicals were produced via hydrogen abstraction in a fluorine discharge and ionized with synchrotron radiation. Mass-selected slow photoelectron spectra of the products were obtained from photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectra. A Franck-Condon simulation based on computed geometries and vibrational frequencies identified contributions of the o- and p-pyridyl radicals. For the o-isomer an adiabatic ionisation energy of 7.70 eV was obtained, in excellent agreement with a computed value of 7.72 eV. The spectrum of o-pyridyl is characterized by a long progression in an in-plane bending mode and the N-C stretch that contains the radical site.

Abstract
We present a new photoelectron photoion coincidence (PEPICO) spectrometer that combines high mass resolution of cations with independently adjustable velocity map imaging of both cations and electrons. We photoionize atoms and molecules using fixed-frequency vacuum ultraviolet radiation. Mass-resolved photoelectron spectra associated with each cation's mass-to-charge ratio can be obtained by inversion of the photoelectron image. The mass-resolved photoelectron spectra enable kinetic time-resolved probing of chemical reactions with isomeric resolution using fixed-frequency radiation sources amenable to small laboratory settings. The instrument accommodates a variety of sample delivery sources to explore a broad range of physical chemistry. To demonstrate the time-resolved capabilities of the instrument, we study the 193 nm photodissociation of SO2 via the C̃(1B2) ← X̃(1A1) transition. In addition to the well-documented O(3Pj) + SO(3Σ-) channel, we observe direct evidence for a small yield of S(3Pj) + O2(3Σg-) as a primary photodissociation product channel, which may impact sulfur mass-independent fractionation chemistry.

Abstract
Chirality plays a fundamental role in the molecular recognition processes. Molecular flexibility is also crucial in molecular recognition, allowing the interacting molecules to adjust their structures and hence optimize the interaction. Methods probing simultaneously chirality and molecular conformation are therefore crucially needed. Taking advantage of a possible control in the gas phase of the conformational distribution between the equatorial and axial conformers resulting from a ring inversion in jet-cooled 1-indanol, we demonstrate here the sensitivity of valence-shell photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) to both chirality and subtle conformational changes, in a case where the photoelectron spectra of the two conformers are identical. For the highest occupied orbital, we observe a dramatic inversion of the PECD-induced photoelectron asymmetries, while the photoionization cross-section and usual anisotropy (β) parameter are completely insensitive to conformational isomerism. Such a sensitivity is a major asset for the ongoing developments of PECD-based techniques as a sensitive chiral (bio)chemical analytical tool in the gas phase.

Abstract
Proline is a unique amino-acid, with a secondary amine fixed within a pyrrolidine ring providing specific structural properties to proline-rich biopolymers. Gas-phase proline possesses four main H-bond stabilized conformers differing by the ring puckering and carboxylic acid orientation. The latter defines two classes of conformation, whose large ionization energy difference allows a unique conformer-class tagging via electron spectroscopy. Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is an intense chiroptical effect sensitive to molecular structures, hence theorized to be highly conformation-dependent. Here, we present experimental evidence of an intense and striking conformer-specific PECD, measured in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization of proline, as well as a conformer-dependent cation fragmentation behavior. This finding, combined with theoretical modeling, allows a refinement of the conformational landscape and energetic ordering, that proves inaccessible to current molecular electronic structure calculations. Additionally, astrochemical implications regarding a possible link of PECD to the origin of life's homochirality are considered in terms of plausible temperature constraints.

Abstract
Trifluoromethylsulfur pentafluoride (CF3SF5) was valence threshold photoionized in a double imaging photoelectron photoion coincidence spectrometer using vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation. In the 12.5-16.4 eV photon energy range, CF3+, SF5+, and SF3+ cations were observed in both room temperature (RT) and molecular beam (MB) experiments. Their fractional abundances exhibited differences beyond the sample temperature. Kinetic energy analysis of the fragment ions confirmed the difference in the dissociative photoionization mechanism. In the RT experiment, the CF3+ kinetic energies were extrapolated to a 11.84 ± 0.15 eV threshold, which was used in an ion cycle to determine the enthalpy of formation of CF3SF5 as ΔfH°298K(CF3SF5) = -1593 ± 16 kJ mol-1. We also updated the enthalpy of formation of the sulfur pentafluoride radical as ΔfH°298K(SF5) = -854 ± 7 kJ mol-1 and discuss the discrepancy between the CF3 ionization energy based on the Active Thermochemical Tables and the value anchored to the CF ionization energy. A computed reaction enthalpy network optimization resulted in ΔfH°298K(CF3SF5) = -1608 ± 20 kJ mol-1. Both values for ΔfH°298K(CF3SF5) agree with previous ab initio ones in contrast to the original, experimental determination. SF3+ is formed by F-transfer processes both in the RT and MB experiments. Although the same peaks were observed in both experiments, the lower SF3+ onset energy and the more slowly rising CF3+ kinetic energy release in the MB experiment revealed clustering and intracluster F-transfer reactions upon ionization. The monomer and dimer cation potential energy surfaces were explored to rationalize the observations. In the dimer cation, the observer CF3SF5 catalyzes fluorine transfer and promotes CF4 formation, which ultimately leads to the SF3+ fragment ion.

Abstract
A camera-based three-dimensional (3D) imaging system with a superb time-of-flight (TOF) resolution and multi-hit capability was recently developed for electron/ion imaging [Lee et al. J. Chem. Phys. 141, 221101 (2014)]. In this work, we report further improvement of the event rate of the system by adopting an event-driven camera, Tpx3Cam, for detecting the 2D positions of electrons, while a high-speed digitizer provides highly accurate (∼30 ps) TOF information for each event at a rate approaching 1 Mhits/sec.

Abstract
Photoionization of the chiral monoterpene limonene has been investigated using polarized synchrotron radiation between the adiabatic ionization threshold, 8.505 and 23.5 eV. A rich vibrational structure is seen in the threshold photoelectron spectrum and is interpreted using a variety of computational methods. The corresponding photoelectron circular dichroism-measured in the photoelectron angular distribution as a forward-backward asymmetry with respect to the photon direction-was found to be strongly dependent on the vibronic structure appearing in the photoelectron spectra, with the observed asymmetry even switching direction in between the major vibrational peaks. This effect can be ultimately attributed to the sensitivity of this dichroism to small phase shifts between adjacent partial waves of the outgoing photoelectron. These observations have implications for potential applications of this chiroptical technique, where the enantioselective analysis of monoterpene components is of particular interest.

Abstract
We investigated the simplest alkylperoxy radical, CH3OO, formed by reacting photolytically generated CH3 radicals with O2, using the new combustion reactions followed by photoelectron photoion coincidence (CRF-PEPICO) apparatus at the Swiss Light Source. Modeling the experimental photoion mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectrum using Franck-Condon simulations including transitions to triplet and singlet cationic states yielded the adiabatic ionization energy of 10.265 ± 0.025 eV. Dissociative photoionization of CH3OO generates the CH3+ fragment ion at the appearance energy of 11.164 ± 0.010 eV. Combining these two values with ΔfH0K°(CH3) yields ΔfH0K°(CH3OO) = 22.06 ± 0.97 kJ mol-1, reducing the uncertainty of the previously determined value by a factor of 5. Statistical simulation of the CH3OO breakdown diagram provides a molecular thermometer of the free radical's internal temperature, which we measured to be 330 ± 30 K.

Abstract
Abstract
Double-imaging photoelectron/photoion coincidence (i2PEPICO) spectroscopy using a multiplexing, time-efficient, fixed-photon-energy approach offers important opportunities of gas-phase analysis. Building on successful applications in combustion systems that have demonstrated the discriminative power of this technique, we attempt here to push the limits of its application further to more chemically complex combustion examples. The present investigation is devoted to identifying and potentially quantifying compounds featuring five heavy atoms in laminar, premixed low-pressure flames of hydrocarbon and oxygenated fuels and their mixtures. In these combustion examples from flames of cyclopentene, iso-pentane, iso-pentane blended with dimethyl ether (DME), and diethyl ether (DEE), we focus on the unambiguous assignment and quantitative detection of species with the sum formulae C5H6, C5H7, C5H8, C5H10, and C4H8O in the respective isomer mixtures, attempting to provide answers to specific chemical questions for each of these examples. To analyze the obtained i2PEPICO results from these combustion situations, photoelectron spectra (PES) from pure reference compounds, including several examples previously unavailable in the literature, were recorded with the same experimental setup as used in the flame measurements. In addition, PES of two species where reference spectra have not been obtained, namely 2-methyl-1-butene (C5H10) and the 2-cyclopentenyl radical (C5H7), were calculated on the basis of high-level ab initio calculations and Franck-Condon (FC) simulations. These reference measurements and quantum chemical calculations support the early fuel decomposition scheme in the cyclopentene flame towards 2-cyclopentenyl as the dominant fuel radical as well as the prevalence of branched intermediates in the early fuel destruction reactions in the iso-pentane flame, with only minor influences from DME addition. Furthermore, the presence of ethyl vinyl ether (EVE) in DEE flames that was predicted by a recent DEE combustion mechanism could be confirmed unambiguously. While combustion measurements using i2PEPICO can be readily obtained in isomer-rich situations, we wish to highlight the crucial need for high-quality reference information to assign and evaluate the obtained spectra.

Abstract
We report the first experimental measurement of the near-threshold photoionization spectra of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon clusters made of pyrene C16H10 and coronene C24H12, obtained using imaging photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectrometry with a VUV synchrotron beamline. The experimental results of the ionization energy are compared to calculated ones obtained from simulations using dedicated electronic structure treatment for large ionized molecular clusters. Experiment and theory consistently find a decrease of the ionization energy with cluster size. The inclusion of temperature effects in the simulations leads to a lowering of this energy and to quantitative agreement with the experiment. In the case of pyrene, both theory and experiment show a discontinuity in the IE trend for the hexamer. This work demonstrates the ability of the models to describe the electronic structure of PAH clusters and suggests that these species are ionized in astronomical environments where they are thought to be present.

Abstract
We report an experimental investigation of homochiral cluster formation in seeded molecular beam expansions of (2R,3R)-butanediol. Synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet photoionization measurements have been performed using a double imaging electron-ion spectrometer in various configurations and modes of operation. These include measurements of the cluster ion mass spectra, wavelength scanned ion yields, and threshold electron spectra. Protonated cluster ions ranging up to n = 7 have been observed and size-selected photoelectron spectra and photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) have been recorded by velocity map imaging, recorded in coincidence with ions, at a number of fixed photon energies. Translation temperatures of the cluster ions have been further examined by ion imaging measurements. As well as the sequence of protonated clusters with integral numbers of butanediol monomer units, a second series with half-integral monomer masses is observed and deduced to result from a facile cleavage of a butanediol monomer moiety within the nascent cluster. This second sequence of half-integral masses displays quite distinct behaviours. PECD measurements are used to show that the half-integral mass cluster ions do not share a common parentage with whole integer masses. Using an analogy developed with simple theoretical calculations of butanediol dimer structures, it is inferred that the dissociative branching into integral and half-integral ion mass sequences is controlled by the presence of different butanediol monomer conformations within the hydrogen bonded clusters.

Abstract
Ultrafast photoelectron and photoion spectroscopy (as well as their combination known as "coincidence spectroscopy") utilizes detectors based on different electron multipliers such as microchannel plates or single-channel electron multipliers. These detectors have a few important limitations such as fast-signal distortion (low pass operation), mutually exclusive positive or negative mode, dead time, and requirement of trigger. A high-pass induction detector, based on a hollow-cored toroidal coil, was developed that overcomes the above-mentioned limitations. The frequency-dispersive response and linearity of different configurations were analyzed. It is shown that the response is enhanced for ultrafast electron signals, dependent on construction parameters, thus offering response flexibility by design. Kinetic energy distributions of pseudospark-induced electron pulses are characterized in order to validate the capabilities in real applications.

Abstract
We present a simple diode laser-based photoionization scheme for generating electrons and ions with well-defined spatial and energetic (≲2 eV) structures. This scheme can easily be implemented in ion or electron imaging spectrometers for the purpose of off-line characterization and calibration. The low laser power ∼1 mW needed from a passively stabilized diode laser and the low flux of potassium atoms in an effusive beam make our scheme a versatile source of ions and electrons for applications in research and education.

Abstract
The photoelectron spectra of XCN(2+) (X = Cl, Br, and I) were calculated employing ab initio electronic structure methods with high-level electron correlation and explicit treatment of spin-orbit coupling. Twelve scalar-relativistic excited states of the dicationic systems, calculated from state-averaged CASSCF/MRCI calculations, were used as the electronic basis to evaluate spin-orbit eigenstates. While the spin-orbit effects in ClCN(2+) are found to be negligible, the electronic spectroscopy of BrCN(2+) and ICN(2+) is significantly influenced by interstate spin-orbit coupling. Several electronic degeneracies are lifted, and many unexpected accidental degeneracies occurred due to the spin-orbit coupling. In particular, the spin-orbit interactions between X̃ (3)Σ(-)-b̃ (1)Σ(+), Ã (3)Π-c̃ (1)Π, B̃ (3)Δ-ã (1)Δ, and C̃ (3)Σ(+)-d̃ (1)Σ(-) are found to be strong in BrCN(2+) and ICN(2+). By careful analysis of the effect of spin-orbit coupling parameters and the spin-orbit eigenstate composition, an assignment of the hitherto unidentified experimental photoelectron bands of BrCN(2+) and ICN(2+) is presented.

Abstract
We report here the recent upgrade of the SAPHIRS permanent photoionization end-station at the DESIRS vacuum ultraviolet beamline of synchrotron SOLEIL, whose performances have been enhanced by installing an additional double-skimmer differential chamber. The smaller molecular beam profile obtained at the interaction region has increased the mass resolution of the double imaging photoelectron photoion coincidence (i(2)PEPICO) spectrometer, DELICIOUS III, installed in the photoionization chamber of the SAPHIRS endstation, by a factor of two, to M/ΔM ∼ 1700 (FWHM). The electron kinetic energy resolution offered by the velocity map imaging (VMI) part of the spectrometer has been improved down to 2.8% (ΔE/E) as we show on the N2 photoionization case in the double skimmer configuration. As a representative example of the overall state-of-the-art i(2)PEPICO performances, experimental results of the dissociation of state-selected O2(+)(B(2)∑(g)(-), v(+) = 0-6) molecular ions performed at the fixed photon energy of hν = 21.1 eV are presented.

Abstract
Compared to single ion/electron-optics for velocity-map imaging, a double-focusing lens assembly designed not only allows for mapping velocity imaging of photoelectrons but also allows for investigating the vibrational structure of the intermediate states of neutral species in resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectra. In this presentation, in order to record REMPI and photoelectron spectra separately, we have constructed a compact photoelectron velocity-map imaging (VMI) apparatus combined with an opposite linear Wiley-Mclaren time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS). A mass resolution (m/Δm) of ∼1300 for TOFMS and electron energy resolution (ΔE/E) of 2.4% for VMI have been achieved upon three-photon ionization of Xe atom at 258.00 nm laser wavelength. As a benchmark, in combination of one-color (1 + 1) REMPI and photoelectron imaging of benzene via 6(1) and 6(1)1(1) vibronic levels in the S1 state, the vibrational structures of the cation and photoelectron angular anisotropy are unraveled. In addition, two-color (1 + 1') REMPI and photoelectron imaging of aniline was used to complete the accurate measurement of ionization potential (62,271 ± 3 cm(-1)). The results suggest that the apparatus is a powerful tool for studying photoionization dynamics in the photoelectron imaging using vibrational-state selected excitation to the intermediate states of neutrals based on REMPI technique.

Abstract
Complex reactive processes in the gas phase often proceed via numerous reaction steps and intermediate species that must be identified and quantified to develop an understanding of the reaction pathways and establish suitable reaction mechanisms. Here, photoelectron-photoion coincidence (PEPICO) spectroscopy has been applied to analyse combustion intermediates present in a premixed fuel-rich (ϕ = 1.7) ethene-oxygen flame diluted with 25% argon, burning at a reduced pressure of 40 mbar. For the first time, multiplexing fixed-photon-energy PEPICO measurements were demonstrated in a chemically complex reactive system such as a flame in comparison with the scanning "threshold" TPEPICO approach used in recent pioneering combustion investigations. The technique presented here is capable of detecting and identifying multiple species by their cations' vibronic fingerprints, including radicals and pairs or triplets of isomers, from a single time-efficient measurement at a selected fixed photon energy. Vibrational structures for these species have been obtained in very good agreement with scanning-mode threshold photoelectron spectra taken under the same conditions. From such spectra, the temperature in the ionisation volume was determined. Exemplary analysis of species profiles and mole fraction ratios for isomers shows favourable agreement with results obtained by more common electron ionisation and photoionisation mass spectrometry experiments. It is expected that the multiplexing fixed-photon-energy PEPICO technique can contribute effectively to the analysis of chemical reactivity and kinetics in and beyond combustion.

Abstract
Photoionization of cyanoacetylene was studied using synchrotron radiation over the non-dissociative ionization excitation range 11-15.6 eV, with photoelectron-photoion coincidence techniques. The absolute ionization cross-section and spectroscopic aspects of the parent ion were recorded. The adiabatic ionization energy of cyanoacetylene was measured as 11.573 ± 0.010 eV. A detailed analysis of photoelectron spectra of HC3N involves new aspects and new assignments of the vibrational components to excitation of the A(2)Σ(+) and B(2)Π states of the cation. Some of the structured autoionization features observed in the 11.94 to 15.5 eV region of the total ion yield (TIY) spectrum were assigned to two Rydberg series converging to the B(2)Π state of HC3N(+). A number of the measured TIY features are suggested to be vibrational components of Rydberg series converging to the C(2)Σ(+) state of HC3N(+) at ≈17.6 eV and others to valence shell transitions of cyanoacetylene in the 11.6-15 eV region. The results of quantum chemical calculations of the cation electronic state geometries, vibrational frequencies and energies, as well as of the C-H dissociation potential energy profiles of the ground and electronic excited states of the ion, are compared with experimental observations. Ionization quantum yields are evaluated and discussed and the problem of adequate calibration of photoionization cross-sections is raised.

Abstract
The valence shell photoionization of the simplest proteinaceous chiral amino acid, alanine, is investigated over the vacuum ultraviolet region from its ionization threshold up to 18 eV. Tunable and variable polarization synchrotron radiation was coupled to a double imaging photoelectron/photoion coincidence (i(2)PEPICO) spectrometer to produce mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectra and derive the state-selected fragmentation channels. The photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD), an orbital-sensitive, conformer-dependent chiroptical effect, was also recorded at various photon energies and compared to continuum multiple scattering calculations. Two complementary vaporization methods-aerosol thermodesorption and a resistively heated sample oven coupled to an adiabatic expansion-were applied to promote pure enantiomers of alanine into the gas phase, yielding neutral alanine with different internal energy distributions. A comparison of the photoelectron spectroscopy, fragmentation, and dichroism measured for each of the vaporization methods was rationalized in terms of internal energy and conformer populations and supported by theoretical calculations. The analytical potential of the so-called PECD-PICO detection technique-where the electron spectroscopy and circular dichroism can be obtained as a function of mass and ion translational energy-is underlined and applied to characterize the origin of the various species found in the experimental mass spectra. Finally, the PECD findings are discussed within an astrochemical context, and possible implications regarding the origin of biomolecular asymmetry are identified.

Abstract
Monoterpenes are the main class of biogenic volatile organic compounds. They promptly react with oxygen and nitrogen species, leading to the formation of secondary aerosols. The determination of their physicochemical properties, such as their ionization energies (IEs), is crucial to understand better their reactivity. We previously introduced a modified atmospheric pressure photoionization source coupled to a tunable vacuum ultraviolet source at the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation facility. Here, this set-up is employed to determine IEs of ten monoterpenes with a good precision (±50 meV) and a small sample consumption limited to 10 μg.

Abstract
Angle-resolved electron spectroscopy in coincidence with high-resolution mass spectroscopy has been applied to study two-color resonant photoionization in atomic xenon. Separation of different isotopes enabled us to extract results for the electronic dynamics free from depolarization effects, which are generally introduced by the coupling of the electronic and nuclear angular momenta. The concerted experimental and theoretical analysis of the photoelectron angular distributions in the region of an autoionizing resonance emphasizes the strong sensitivity of the observed structures to the fine details of the treatment of the underlying dynamics.

Abstract
Photoionization of dicyanoacetylene was studied using synchrotron radiation over the excitation range 8-25 eV, with photoelectron-photoion coincidence techniques. The absolute ionization cross-section and detailed spectroscopic aspects of the parent ion were recorded. The adiabatic ionization energy of dicyanoacetylene was measured as 11.80 ± 0.01 eV. A detailed analysis of the cation spectroscopy involves new aspects and new assignments of the vibrational components to excitation of the quasi-degenerate A(2)Πg, B(2)Σg(+) states as well as the C(2)Σu(+) and D(2)Πu states of the cation. Some of the structured autoionization features observed in the 12.4-15 eV region of the total ion yield spectrum were assigned to vibrational components of valence shell transitions and to two previously unknown Rydberg series converging to the D(2)Πu state of C4N2(+). The appearance energies of the fragment ions C4N(+), C3N(+), C4(+), C2N(+), and C2(+) were measured and their heats of formation were determined and compared with existing literature values. Thermochemical calculations of the appearance potentials of these and other weaker ions were used to infer aspects of dissociative ionization pathways.
