Abstract
A series of 1,2-dimethylimidazolium ionic liquids bearing a hexadecyl alkyl chain are thoroughly examined via X-ray crystallography. The crystal structures reveal several key variations in the non-covalent interactions in the lipid-like salts. Specifically, distinct cation-cation π interactions are observed when comparing the bromide and iodide structures. Changing the anion to bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (Tf2N-) changes these cation-cation π interactions with anion⋯π interactions. Additionally, several well-defined geometries of the cations are noted based on torsion and core-plane angles of the alkyl chains. Hirshfeld surface analysis is used to distinguish the interactions and geometries in the solid state, helping to reveal characteristic structural fingerprints for the compounds. The solid-state structures of the ionic liquids are correlated with the solution-state structures through UV-vis spectroscopic studies, further emphasizing the importance of the π interactions in the formation of aggregates. Finally, we investigated the thermal properties of the ionic liquids, revealing complex phase transitions for the iodide-containing species. These phase transitions are further rationalized via the analysis of the data gathered from the structures of the other crystallized salts.

Abstract
Dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) have been shown to be useful as an effective solvent for the absorption of CO2. However, compared to monocationic ionic liquids (MILs), they have been less investigated for this application. Previous studies on MIL-CO2 systems have shown that anions play the main role in tuning CO2 capture, but the partial negative charge on the oxygens of CO2 may interact with cation centers and, especially, for DILs with two charge centers, the role of cations can be significant. Therefore, the current work focuses on how cation symmetry and the length of side chains affect interactions and also the dynamical and structural properties of DIL-CO2 systems using molecular dynamics simulation. In addition, the effect of CO2 on the infrared vibrational spectra of isolated ions and ion triplet (DIL molecules) was studied using density functional theory calculations and the observed red and blue shifts have been interpreted. The results indicated that symmetric cation with longer side chains tend to interact more strongly with CO2 molecules. It seems that increasing the length of the side chains causes more bending of the middle chain, and in addition to increasing the free fraction volume, it weakens the interaction between cations and anions, and as a result more interaction between gas and cation. The results of this work may contribute to the rational molecular design of DILs for CO2 capture, DIL-based gas sensors, etc.

Abstract
Understanding the factors that govern gas absorption in ionic liquids is critical to the development of high-capacity solvents for catalysis, electrochemistry, and gas separations. Here, we report experimental probes of liquid structure that provide insights into how free volume impacts the O2 absorption properties of ionic liquids. Specifically, we establish that isothermal compressibility─measured rapidly and accurately through small-angle X-ray scattering─reports on the size distribution of transient voids within a representative series of ionic liquids and is correlated with O2 absorption capacity. Additionally, O2 absorption capacities are correlated with thermal expansion coefficients, reflecting the beneficial effect of weak intermolecular interactions in ionic liquids on free volume and gas absorption capacity. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the void size distribution─in particular, the probability of forming larger voids within an ionic liquid─has a greater impact on O2 absorption than the total free volume. These results establish relationships between the ionic liquid structure and gas absorption properties that offer design strategies for ionic liquids with high gas solubilities.

Abstract
Solvate ionic liquid synthesis and properties depend on a delicate balancing of cation-solvent and cation-anion interactions to produce materials containing only cation-solvent complexes and solvent-separated anions. Most SILs meeting these characteristics fall within the paradigm of oligomeric ethylene oxides and lithium salts. Targeted functionalization of solvent molecules to achieve desired properties is a relatively unexplored avenue of research. We explore solvent fluorination for a prototypical SIL based on lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiNTf2) and triethylene glycol (TEG). In the first experiment, TEG is partially substituted with 2,2,4,4,5,5,7,7-octafluoro-3,6-dioxaoctane-1,8-diol (FTEG). This leads to a decrease in ionic conductivity and proliferation of Li(NTf2)2- species. Both results suggest FTEG does not readily coordinate Li+ ; a conclusion that is reinforced by computational studies of [(TEG)1Li]+ and [(FTEG)1Li]+ cation stabilities. A second experiment adds FTEG as a diluent to [(TEG)1Li]NTf2. This places FTEG and TEG in competition to coordinate a limited number of Li+ ions. The resulting mixtures exhibit conductivity and viscosity enhancements over the parent SIL and minimal changes in ion speciation due to the poor Li+ binding by FTEG. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopic studies point to increased amounts of free volume upon dilution of FTEG. This likely explains the origin of the conductivity enhancement.

Abstract
X-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to investigate the rotational diffusion of a stable, positively charged nitroxide 4-trimethylammonium-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl iodide (Cat-1) in a series of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) having alkyl chain lengths from two to eight carbons. The rotation of Cat-1 is anisotropic with the preferential axis of rotation along the NO• moiety. The Stokes-Einstein-Debye law describes the mean rotational correlation time of Cat-1, assuming that the hydrodynamic radius is smaller than the van der Waals radius of the probe. This implies that the probe rotates freely, experiencing slip boundary condition, which is solvent-dependent. The rotational correlation time of Cat-1 in RTILs can very well be fitted to a power-law functionality with a singular temperature, which suggests that the apparent activation energy of rotation exhibits non-Arrhenius behavior. Compared to the rotation of perdeuterated 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-oxopiperidine-1-oxyl (pDTO), which is neutral, the rotation of Cat-1 is several times slower. The rotational anisotropy, the ratio of the rotational times of pDTO and Cat-1, and the apparent activation energy indicate the transition from a homogeneously globular structure to a spongelike structure when the alkyl chain has four carbons, which is also observed in molecular dynamics computational studies. For the first time, we have been able to show that the rotational correlation time of a solute molecule can be analyzed in terms of the Cohen-Turnbull free volume theory. The Cohen-Turnbull theory fully describes the rotation of Cat-1 in all ionic liquids in the measured temperature range.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are known for their high ability to capture CO2. However, the mechanism of CO2 solubility into ILs during their initial interaction remains controversial. In this study, we analyzed the initial dissolution of CO2 into an IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C4min] [NTf2]) by measuring its solubility using a combination of a molecular beam and a flowing liquid jet sheet beam (FJSB) and the King and Wells method (KW method). The temperature dependence of the initial dissolution probability indicates that the solubility of CO2 in the IL [C4min] [NTf2] increases with increasing temperature. This result is not consistent with what has been reported in an equilibrium state. The initial dissolution probability was well-fitted by the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) equation, which describes the dynamical cage structure in IL systems. We also find that the initial dissolution probability was correlated to the cage lifetime and correlation length. The simple model of CO2 dissolution into an IL with the cage model was implemented to explain the experimental results in this study. Our results indicate that the initial dissolution of CO2 into the IL corresponds to a direct solution and not an uptake process.

Abstract
The formation of ionic liquid (IL) mixtures has been proposed as an approach to rationally fine-tune the physicochemical properties of ILs for a variety of applications. However, the effects of forming such mixtures on the resultant properties of the liquids are only beginning to be understood. Towards a more complete understanding of both the thermodynamics of mixing ILs and the effect of mixing these liquids on their structures and physicochemical properties, the spatial arrangement and free volume of IL mixtures containing the common [C4C1im]+ cation and different anions have been systematically explored using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and 129Xe NMR techniques. Anion size has the greatest effect on the spatial arrangement of the ILs and their mixtures in terms of the size of the non-polar domains and inter-ion distances. It was found that differences in coulombic attraction between oppositely charged ions arising from the distribution of charge density amongst the atoms of the anion also significantly influences these inter-ion distances. PALS and 129Xe NMR results pertaining to the free volume of these mixtures were found to strongly correlate with each other despite the vastly different timescales of these techniques. Furthermore, the excess free volumes calculated from each of these measurements were in excellent agreement with the excess volumes of mixing measured for the IL mixtures investigated. The correspondence of these techniques indicates that the static and dynamic free volume of these liquid mixtures are strongly linked. Consequently, fluxional processes such as hydrogen bonding do not significantly contribute to the free volumes of these liquids compared to the spatial arrangement of ions arising from their size, shape and coulombic attraction. Given the relationship between free volume and transport properties such as viscosity and conductivity, these results provide a link between the structures of IL mixtures, the thermodynamics of mixing and their physicochemical properties.

Abstract
The water-vapor sorption processes in nanoporous MgO-Al2O3 ceramics are studied with positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) spectroscopy employing positron trapping and positronium (Ps)-decaying modes. It is demonstrated that the longest-lived components in the four-term reconstructed PAL spectra with characteristic lifetimes near 2 and 60-70 ns can be, respectively, attributed to ortho-positronium (o-Ps) traps in nanopores with 0.3- and 1.5-1.8-nm radii. The first o-Ps decaying process includes "pick-off" annihilation in the "bubbles" of liquid water, while the second is based on o-Ps interaction with physisorbed water molecules at the walls of the pores. In addition, the water vapor modifies structural defects located at the grain boundaries in a vicinity of pores, this process being accompanied by void fragmentation during water adsorption and agglomeration during water desorption after drying.

Abstract
Nature reveals a great variety of inorganic-organic composite materials exhibiting good mechanical properties, high thermal and chemical stability, and good barrier properties. One class of natural bio-nanocomposites, e.g. found in mussel shells, comprises protein matrices with layered inorganic fillers. Inspired by such natural bio-nanocomposites, the cationic recombinant spider silk protein eADF4(κ16) was processed together with the synthetic layered silicate sodium hectorite in an all-aqueous setup. Drop-casting of this bio-nanocomposite resulted in a thermally and chemically stable film reflecting a one-dimensional crystal. Surprisingly, this bio-nanocomposite coating was, though produced in an all-aqueous process, completely water insoluble. Analyzing the structural details showed a low inner free volume due to the well-oriented self-assembly/alignment of the spider silk proteins on the nanoclay surface, yielding high oxygen and water vapor barrier properties. The here demonstrated properties in combination with good biocompatibility qualify this new bio-nanocomposite to be used in packaging applications.

Abstract
'Cold' crystallization in 80GeSe2-20Ga2Se3 chalcogenide glass nanostructurized due to thermal annealing at 380°C for 10, 25, 50, 80, and 100 h are probed with X-ray diffraction, atomic force, and scanning electron microscopy, as well as positron annihilation spectroscopy performed in positron annihilation lifetime and Doppler broadening of annihilation line modes. It is shown that changes in defect-related component in the fit of experimental positron lifetime spectra for nanocrystallized glasses testify in favor of structural fragmentation of larger free-volume entities into smaller ones. Nanocrystallites of Ga2Se3 and/or GeGa4Se8 phases and prevalent GeSe2 phase extracted mainly at the surface of thermally treated samples with preceding nucleation and void agglomeration in the initial stage of annealing are characteristic features of cold crystallization.

Abstract
Based on temperature (T) dependent crystal structure data of seven organic salts, a radii-based scheme for the calculation of the van der Waals volume (V(vdw)) is analyzed. The obtained volumes (V(vdw,r), r=radius-based) are nearly T independent. An ion volume partitioning scheme is proposed by fixing the anion volumes of [Cl](-), [Br](-), [I](-), [BF(4)](-), [PF(6)](-), [OTf](-) and [NTf(2)](-). The van der Waals volumes (V(vdw,r) (+/-)) of 48 ions are established, with low standard deviations (0.2-3.6 Å(3), 0.1-4.5 % of V(vdw,r) (+/-)). The ion volumes are independent of the counterion and one crystal structure already suffices for their derivation. Correlations of the viscosity with V(vdw,r) via a Litovitz ansatz and our recently derived Arrhenius-type approach prove that these volumes are suitable for the volume-based description and prediction of IL properties. The corresponding correlation coefficient for the latter is R(2)=0.86 for 40 ILs (354 data points) in the T range of 253-373 K.

Abstract
Emissions of greenhouse gases due to human activities have been well documented as well as the effects on global warming resulting from it. Efforts to reduce greenhouse gases at the source are crucial to curb climate change, but due to insignificant economic incentives to reduce usage of fossil fuels, not a lot of progress has been made by this route. This necessitates additional measures to reduce the occurrence of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Here we used theoretical methods to study the solubility of carbon dioxide in ionic liquids (ILs) since sequestration of CO2 in ILs has been proposed as a possible technology for reducing the emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere. Ionic liquids form a class of solvents with melting temperatures below 100 °C and, due to very low vapor pressures, which are not volatile. We have performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (C2mim) bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (Tf2N) and its mixtures with carbon dioxide in order to investigate the CO2 concentration effect on the CO2-cation and CO2-anion interactions. A systematic investigation of CO2 concentration effects on resulting equilibrium liquid structure, and the local environment of the ions is provided. The Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) was used to determine the interaction energy for CO2-cation and CO2-anion complexes from uncorrelated structures derived from MD simulations. A spatial distribution function analysis demonstrates the specific interactions between CO2 and the ionic liquid. Our findings indicate that the total volume of the system increases with the CO2 concentration, with a molar volume of CO2 of about 0.038 L/mol, corresponding to liquid CO2 under a pressure of 100 bar. In other words, the IL effectively pressurizes the CO2 inside its matrix. The thermodynamics of CO2 solvation in C2 min-Tf2N were computed using free energy techniques, and the solubility of CO2 is found to be higher in this IL (-3.7 ± 1 kcal/mol) than in water (+0.2 kJ/mol), predominantly due to anion-CO2 interactions.

Abstract
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of the nitroxide spin probe 3β-doxyl-5α-cholestane (CSL) are studied as functions of the molar concentration, c, and the temperature, T, in a series of n-alkanes. The results are compared with a similar study of a much smaller spin probe, perdeuterated 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-oxopiperidine-1-oxyl (pDT). The Heisenberg spin exchange (HSE) rate constants, K(ex), of CSL are similar in hexane, octane, and decane and are about one-half of those for pDT in the same solvents. They are also about one-half of the Stokes-Einstein-Perrin prediction. This reduction in HSE efficiency is attributed to an effective steric factor, f(eff), which was evaluated by comparing the results with the Stokes-Einstein-Perrin prediction or with pDT, and it is equal to 0.49 ± 0.03, independent of temperature. The unpaired spin density in CSL is localized near one end of the long molecule, so the exchange integral, J, leading to HSE, is expected to be large in some collisions and small in others; thus, J is modeled by an ideal distribution of values of J = J(0) with probability f and J = 0 with probability (1 - f). Because of rotational and translation diffusion during contact and between re-encounters of the probe, the effective steric factor is predicted to be f(eff) = f(1/2). Estimating the fraction of the surface of CSL with rich spin density yields a theoretical estimate of f(eff) = 0.59 ± 0.08, in satisfactory agreement with experiment. HSE is well described by simple hydrodynamic theory, with only a small dependence on solvent-probe relative sizes at the same value of T/η, where η is the viscosity of the solvent. This result is probably due to a fortuitous interplay between long- and short-range effects that describe diffusion processes over relatively large distances. In contrast, dipole-dipole interactions (DD) as measured by the line broadening, B(dip), and the mean time between re-encounters within the cage, τ(RE), vary significantly with the solvent-probe size ratio at the same value of T/η. For these phenomena, dominated by short-range diffusion, the reciprocal fractional free volume V(0)/V(f) provides a better description of the diffusion. Thus, B(dip) and τ(RE) form common curves when plotted vs V(0)/V(f). As a result, the fractional broadening by DD occurs at an order of magnitude higher values of T/η for CSL compared with pDT.

Abstract
In this work positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is employed to study the ortho-Positronium lifetime parameters τ3>, σ3 and I3 in two structurally simple amorphous polymers 1,2-poly(butadiene) and cis-1,4-poly(isoprene). The ortho-Positronium mean lifetime parameter τ3> is compared with dynamics data from broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments. Coincidences of characteristic temperatures from PALS with BDS and ESR experiments show close relationships between positron lifetime and dynamics of polymers.

Abstract
The electrochemical behaviour of ferrocenemethanol (FcMeOH) has been studied in a range of room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperomery and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). The diffusion coefficient of FcMeOH, measured using chronoamperometry, decreased with increasing RTIL viscosity. Analysis of the mass transport properties of the RTILs revealed that the Stokes-Einstein equation did not apply to our data. The "correlation length" was estimated from diffusion coefficient data and corresponded well to the average size of holes (voids) in the liquid, suggesting that a model in which the diffusing species jumps between holes in the liquid is appropriate in these liquids. Cyclic voltammetry at ultramicroelectrodes demonstrated that the ability to record steady-state voltammograms during ferrocenemethanol oxidation depended on the voltammetric scan rate, the electrode dimensions and the RTIL viscosity. Similarly, the ability to record steady-state SECM feedback approach curves depended on the RTIL viscosity, the SECM tip radius and the tip approach speed. Using 1.3 μm Pt SECM tips, steady-state SECM feedback approach curves were obtained in RTILs, provided that the tip approach speed was low enough to maintain steady-state diffusion at the SECM tip. In the case where tip-induced convection contributed significantly to the SECM tip current, this effect could be accounted for theoretically using mass transport equations that include diffusive and convective terms. Finally, the rate of heterogeneous electron transfer across the electrode/RTIL interface during ferrocenemethanol oxidation was estimated using SECM, and k(0) was at least 0.1 cm s(-1) in one of the least viscous RTILs studied.
