Ion Correlations Decrease Particle Aggregation Rate by Increasing Hydration Forces at Interfaces

The connection between solution structure, particle forces, and emergent phenomena at solid-liquid interfaces remains ambiguous. In this case study on boehmite aggregation, we established a connection between interfacial solution structure, emerging hydration forces between two approaching particles, and the resulting structure and kinetics of particle aggregation. In contrast to expectations from continuum-based theories, we observed a nonmonotonic dependence of the aggregation rate on the concentration of sodium chloride, nitrate, or nitrite, decreasing by 15-fold in 4 molal compared to 1 molal solutions. These results are accompanied by an increase in repulsive hydration forces and interfacial oscillatory features from 0.27-0.31 nm in 0.01 molal to 0.38-0.52 nm in 2 molal. Moreover, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicated that these changes correspond to enhanced ion correlations near the interface and produced loosely bound aggregates that retain electrolyte between the particles. We anticipate that these results will enable the prediction of particle aggregation, attachment, and assembly, with broad relevance to interfacial phenomena.

Structural effects of water clusters on viscosity at high shear rates

In this study, we use molecular dynamics simulations of liquid water to investigate how shear thinning affects the viscosity of liquid water by structural changes of the hydrogen bond network. The effect of shear on viscosity can be divided into two parts: shear-induced destruction of the hydrogen bond network and the influence of the water structure on shear viscosity. First, strong shear destroys tetrahedral structures and thus reduces the connectivity of the hydrogen bond network. It is mainly because shear deformation, characterized by compression and expansion axes, respectively, triggers the destruction and formation of hydrogen bonds, resulting in anisotropic effects on water structures. At the same time, shear destroys large clusters and enhances the formation of small ones, resulting in a decrease in average cluster sizes. Second, the change of viscosity obeys a power law relationship with the change of hydrogen bond structures, highlighting a one-to-one correspondence between structure and property. Meanwhile, in order to explain why the structure affects viscosity, we define hydrogen-bond viscosity and find that the cooperative motion of the water structures can promote momentum transfer in the form of aggregations. Hydrogen-bond viscosity accounts for 5%-50% of the total viscosity. Our results elucidate that water structures are the important structural units to explain the change of water properties.

Predicting Outcomes of Nanoparticle Attachment by Connecting Atomistic, Interfacial, Particle, and Aggregate Scales

Predicting nanoparticle aggregation and attachment phenomena requires a rigorous understanding of the interplay among crystal structure, particle morphology, surface chemistry, solution conditions, and interparticle forces, yet no comprehensive picture exists. We used an integrated suite of experimental, theoretical, and simulation methods to resolve the effect of solution pH on the aggregation of boehmite nanoplatelets, a case study with important implications for the environmental management of legacy nuclear waste. Real-time observations showed that the particles attach preferentially along the (010) planes at pH 8.5 and the (101) planes at pH 11. To rationalize these results, we established the connection between key physicochemical phenomena across the relevant length scales. Starting from molecular-scale simulations of surface hydroxyl reactivity, we developed an interfacial-scale model of the corresponding electrostatic potentials, with subsequent particle-scale calculations of the resulting driving forces allowing successful prediction of the attachment modes. Finally, we scaled these phenomena to understand the collective structure at the aggregate-scale. Our results indicate that facet-specific differences in surface chemistry produce heterogeneous surface charge distributions that are coupled to particle anisotropy and shape-dependent hydrodynamic forces, to play a key role in controlling aggregation behavior.

Oxide- and Silicate-Water Interfaces and Their Roles in Technology and the Environment

Interfacial reactions drive all elemental cycling on Earth and play pivotal roles in human activities such as agriculture, water purification, energy production and storage, environmental contaminant remediation, and nuclear waste repository management. The onset of the 21st century marked the beginning of a more detailed understanding of mineral aqueous interfaces enabled by advances in techniques that use tunable high-flux focused ultrafast laser and X-ray sources to provide near-atomic measurement resolution, as well as by nanofabrication approaches that enable transmission electron microscopy in a liquid cell. This leap into atomic- and nanometer-scale measurements has uncovered scale-dependent phenomena whose reaction thermodynamics, kinetics, and pathways deviate from previous observations made on larger systems. A second key advance is new experimental evidence for what scientists hypothesized but could not test previously, namely, interfacial chemical reactions are frequently driven by "anomalies" or "non-idealities" such as defects, nanoconfinement, and other nontypical chemical structures. Third, progress in computational chemistry has yielded new insights that allow a move beyond simple schematics, leading to a molecular model of these complex interfaces. In combination with surface-sensitive measurements, we have gained knowledge of the interfacial structure and dynamics, including the underlying solid surface and the immediately adjacent water and aqueous ions, enabling a better definition of what constitutes the oxide- and silicate-water interfaces. This critical review discusses how science progresses from understanding ideal solid-water interfaces to more realistic systems, focusing on accomplishments in the last 20 years and identifying challenges and future opportunities for the community to address. We anticipate that the next 20 years will focus on understanding and predicting dynamic transient and reactive structures over greater spatial and temporal ranges as well as systems of greater structural and chemical complexity. Closer collaborations of theoretical and experimental experts across disciplines will continue to be critical to achieving this great aspiration.

Molecular Characterization of Polymer Networks

Polymer networks are complex systems consisting of molecular components. Whereas the properties of the individual components are typically well understood by most chemists, translating that chemical insight into polymer networks themselves is limited by the statistical and poorly defined nature of network structures. As a result, it is challenging, if not currently impossible, to extrapolate from the molecular behavior of components to the full range of performance and properties of the entire polymer network. Polymer networks therefore present an unrealized, important, and interdisciplinary opportunity to exert molecular-level, chemical control on material macroscopic properties. A barrier to sophisticated molecular approaches to polymer networks is that the techniques for characterizing the molecular structure of networks are often unfamiliar to many scientists. Here, we present a critical overview of the current characterization techniques available to understand the relation between the molecular properties and the resulting performance and behavior of polymer networks, in the absence of added fillers. We highlight the methods available to characterize the chemistry and molecular-level properties of individual polymer strands and junctions, the gelation process by which strands form networks, the structure of the resulting network, and the dynamics and mechanics of the final material. The purpose is not to serve as a detailed manual for conducting these measurements but rather to unify the underlying principles, point out remaining challenges, and provide a concise overview by which chemists can plan characterization strategies that suit their research objectives. Because polymer networks cannot often be sufficiently characterized with a single method, strategic combinations of multiple techniques are typically required for their molecular characterization.

Mechanical Characterization for Cellular Mechanobiology: Current Trends and Future Prospects

Accurate mechanical characterization of adherent cells and their substrates is important for understanding the influence of mechanical properties on cells themselves. Recent mechanobiology studies outline the importance of mechanical parameters, such as stress relaxation and strain stiffening on the behavior of cells. Numerous techniques exist for probing mechanical properties and it is vital to understand the benefits of each technique and how they relate to each other. This mini review aims to guide the reader through the toolbox of mechanical characterization techniques by presenting well-established and emerging methods currently used to assess mechanical properties of substrates and cells.

Rheology of Water Flows Confined between Multilayer Graphene Walls

Water confined by hydrophilic materials shows unique transport properties compared to bulk water, thereby offering new opportunities for the development of nanofluidic devices. Recent experimental and numerical studies showed that nanoconfined water undergoes liquid- to solid-phase-like transitions depending on the degree of confinement. In the case of water confined by graphene layers, the van der Waals forces are known to deform the graphene layers, whose bending leads to further nonuniform confinement effects. Despite the extensive studies of nanoconfined water under equilibrium conditions, the interplay between the confinement and rheological water properties, such as viscosity, slip length, and normal stress differences under shear flow conditions, is poorly understood. The current investigation uses a validated all-atom nonequilibrium molecular dynamics model to simultaneously analyze the continuum transport and atomistic structural properties of water in a slit between two moving graphene walls under Couette flow conditions. A range of different slit widths and velocity strain rates are considered. It is shown that under subnanometer confinement, water loses the rotational symmetry of a Newtonian fluid. Under such conditions, water transforms into ice, where the atomistic structure is completely insensitive to the applied shear force and behaves like a frozen slab sliding between the graphene walls. This leads to the shear viscosity increase, although it is not as dramatic as the normal force increase that contributes to the increased friction force reported in previous experimental studies. On the other end of the spectrum, for flows at large velocity strain rates in moderate to large slits between the graphene walls, water is in the liquid state and reveals shear thinning behavior. In this case, water exhibits a constant slip length on the wall, which is typical of liquids in the vicinity of hydrophobic surfaces.

Lubricated friction around nanodefects

The lubrication properties of nanoconfined liquids underpin countless natural and industrial processes. However, our current understanding of lubricated friction is still limited, especially for nonideal interfaces exhibiting nanoscale chemical and topographical defects. Here, we use atomic force microscopy to explore the equilibrium and dynamical behavior of a model lubricant, squalane, confined between a diamond tip and graphite in the vicinity of an atomic step. We combine high-resolution imaging of the interface with highly localized shear measurements at different velocities and temperatures to derive a quantitative picture of the lubricated friction around surface defects. We show that defects tend to promote local molecular order and increase friction forces by reducing the number of stable molecular configurations in their immediate vicinity. The effect is general, can propagate over hundreds of nanometers, and can be quantitatively described by a semiempirical model that bridges the molecular details and mesoscale observations.

A Wide-Band Digital Lock-In Amplifier and Its Application in Microfluidic Impedance Measurement

In this work, we report on the design of a wide-band digital lock-in amplifier (DLIA) of up to 65 MHz and its application for electrical impedance measurements in microfluidic devices. The DLIA is comprised of several dedicated technologies. First, it features a fully differential analog circuit, which includes a preamplifier with a low input noise of 4.4 nV/√Hz, a programmable-gain amplifier with a gain of 52 dB, and an anti-aliasing, fully differential low-pass filter with −76 dB stop-band attenuation. Second, the DLIA has an all-digital phase lock loop, which features a phase deviation of less than 0.02° throughout the frequency range. The phase lock loop utilizes an equally accurate period-frequency measurement, with a sub-ppm precision of frequency detection. Third, a modified clock link is implemented in the DLIA to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the analog-to-digital converter affected by clock jitter of up to 20 dBc. A series of measurements were performed to characterize the DLIA, and the results showed an accurate performance. Additionally, impedance measurements of standard-size microparticles were performed by frequency sweep from 300 kHz to 30 MHz, using the DLIA in a microfluidic device. Different diameters of microparticle could be accurately distinguished according to the relative impedance at 2.5 MHz. The results confirm the promising applications of the DLIA in microfluidic electrical impedance measurements.

MicroMegascope based dynamic surface force apparatus

Surface force apparatus (SFA) allows accurate resolving of the interfacial properties of fluids confined between extended surfaces. The accuracy of the SFA makes it an ubiquitous tool for the nanoscale mechanical characterization of soft matter systems. The SFA traditionally measures force-distance profiles through interferometry with subnanometric distance precision. However, these techniques often require a dedicated and technically demanding experimental setup, and there remains a need for versatile and simple force-distance measurement tools. Here we present a MicroMegascope based dynamic SFA capable of accurate measurement of the dynamic force profile of a liquid confined between a millimetric sphere and a planar substrate. Normal and shear mechanical impedance is measured within the classical frequency modulation framework. We measure rheological and frictional properties from micrometric to molecular confinement. We also highlight the resolution of small interfacial features such as ionic liquid layering. This apparatus shows promise as a versatile force-distance measurement device for exotic surfaces or extreme environments.

Lubricating properties of single metal ions at interfaces

The behaviour of ionic solutions confined in nanoscale gaps is central to countless processes, from biomolecular function to electrochemistry, energy storage and lubrication. However, no clear link exists between the molecular-level behaviour of the liquid and macroscopic observations. The problem mainly comes from the difficulty to interrogate a small number of liquid molecules. Here, we use atomic force microscopy to investigate the viscoelastic behaviour of pure water and ionic solutions down to the single ion level. The results show a glassy-like behaviour for pure water, with single metal ions acting as lubricants by reducing the elasticity of the nano-confined solution and the magnitude of the hydrodynamic friction. At small ionic concentration (<20 mM) the results can be quantitatively explained by the ions moving via a thermally-activated process resisted by the ion's hydration water (Prandtl-Tomlinson model). The model breaks down at higher salt concentrations due to ion-ion interaction effects that can no longer be neglected. The correlations are confirmed by direct sub-nanometre imaging of the interface at equilibrium. The results provide a molecular-level basis for explaining the tribological properties of aqueous solutions and suggest that ion-ion interactions create mesoscale effects that prevent a direct link between nanoscale and macroscopic measurements.

Viscosity of Water Interfaces with Hydrophobic Nanopores: Application to Water Flow in Carbon Nanotubes

The nanoconfinement of water results in changes in water properties and nontraditional water flow behaviors. The determination of the interfacial interactions between water and hydrophobic surfaces helps in understanding many of the nontraditional behaviors of nanoconfined water. In this study, an approach for the identification of the viscosity of water interfaces with hydrophobic nanopores as a function of the nanopore diameter and water-solid (nanopore) interactions is proposed. In this approach, water in a hydrophobic nanopore is represented as a double-phase water with two distinct viscosities: water interface and water core. First, the slip velocity to pressure gradient ratio of water flow in hydrophobic nanopores is obtained via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Then the water interface viscosity is determined via a pressure gradient-based bilayer water flow model. Moreover, the core viscosity and the effective viscosity of water flow in hydrophobic nanopores are derived as functions of the nanopore diameter and water-solid interactions. This approach is utilized to report the interface viscosity, core viscosity, and effective viscosity of water flow in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as functions of the CNT diameter. Moreover, using the proposed approach, the transition from MD to continuum mechanics is revealed where the bulk water properties are recovered for large CNTs.

Anomalous Behavior of Ultra-Low-Amplitude Capillary Waves. A Glimpse of the Viscoelastic Properties of Interfacial Water?

We investigate, both theoretically and by a differential interferometric technique, the behavior of large-wavelength capillary waves (of the order of 10^-4 m) selectively excited at the surface of drops and bubbles with typical eigenfrequencies of the order of 10² Hz. The resonance peaks of gas bubbles or hydrocarbon drops in water (radius less than 1 mm) highlight anomalously small dissipation in the region of ultralow (sub-nanometric) oscillation amplitudes, reaching a plateau at higher amplitudes. This is in sharp contrast to the usual oscillating systems, where an anomalous behavior holds at large amplitudes alone. Dissipation is strongly dependent on the excited vibrational modes and, in spite of remarkable numerical differences, water-vapor and water-hydrocarbon interfaces exhibit the same overall trend. A phenomenological model was developed, based on the assumption that water possesses a threshold viscoelasticity, above which it behaves like a regular viscous fluid. The well-known Deborah number was then estimated within the anomalous region and found to lie in the range of viscoelastic fluids. In agreement with previous studies of nanohydrodynamics (e.g., atomic force microscopy measurements with sub-nanometric tip motions), the present one lends support to the idea that every self-aggregating fluid exhibits yield stress behavior, including classical Newtonian fluids like water. The essential requirement is that the applied perturbation lie below a critical threshold, above which viscous behavior is recovered. Our differential interferometric technique seems particularly suitable for this type of studies, as it allows measurement of long-wavelength capillary waves with sub-nanometric resolution on the oscillation amplitudes.

Van der Waals Force Isolation of Monolayer MoS2

Monolayer MoS₂ can effectively screen the vdW interaction of underlying substrates with external systems by >90% because of the substantial increase in the separation between the substrate and external systems due to the presence of the monolayer. This substantial screening of vdW interactions by MoS₂ monolayer is different from what reported at graphene.

Dynamic shear force microscopy of viscosity in nanometer-confined hexadecane layers

Hexadecane exhibits pronounced molecular layering upon confinement to gaps of a few nanometer width which is discussed for its role in boundary lubrication. We have probed the mechanical properties of the confined layers with the help of an atomic force microscope, by quasi-static normal force measurements and by analyzing the lateral tip motion of a magnetically actuated torsional cantilever oscillation. The molecular layering is modeled by a oscillatory force curve and the tip approach is simulated assuming thermal equilibrium correlations in the liquid. The shear response of the confined layers reveals gradually increasing stiffness and viscous dissipation for a decreasing number of confined layers.

Note: Differential configurations for the mitigation of slow fluctuations limiting the resolution of digital lock-in amplifiers

The resolution of digital lock-in amplifiers working with a narrow bandwidth (<100 Hz) is limited by slow fluctuations, which can be two orders of magnitude larger (μV range) than the noise of the input amplifier (tens of nV). In order to tackle this issue, affecting state-of-the-art laboratory instrumentation and here systematically quantified, three differential sensing configurations are presented. They adapt to different setup conditions and are based on manual and automatic tuning of dummy references, allowing a 25-fold resolution improvement for enhanced long-term tracking of impedance sensors.

Nanoscale Trapping and Squeeze-Out of Confined Alkane Monolayers

We present combined force curve and conduction atomic force microscopy (AFM) data for the linear alkanes CnH2n+2 (n = 10, 12, 14, 16) confined between a gold-coated AFM tip and a graphite surface. Solvation layering is observed in the force curves for all liquids, and conduction AFM is used to study in detail the removal of the confined (mono)layer closest to the graphite surface. The squeeze-out behavior of the monolayer can be very different depending upon the temperature. Below the monolayer melting transition temperatures the molecules are in an ordered state on the graphite surface, and fast and complete removal of the confined molecules is observed. However, above the melting transition temperature the molecules are in a disordered state, and even at large applied pressure a few liquid molecules are trapped within the tip-sample contact zone. These findings are similar to a previous study for branched alkanes [ Gosvami Phys. Rev. Lett. 2008, 100, 076101 ], but the observation for the linear alkane homologue series demonstrates clearly the dependence of the squeeze-out and trapping on the state of the confined material.
