Mid-IR spectroscopy of supercritical water: From dilute gas to dense fluid

Rapid Water Dynamics Structures the OH-Stretching Spectra of Solitary Water in Ionic Liquids and Dipolar Solvents

In a recent study [ J. Phys. Chem. B 126, 4584 (2022)] we used infrared spectroscopy to investigate the solvation and dynamics of solitary water in ionic liquids and dipolar solvents. Complex shapes observed for water OH-stretching bands common to all high-polarity solvents were assigned to water in several solvation states. In the present study, classical molecular dynamics simulations of a single water molecule in four ionic liquids and three dipolar solvents were used to test and refine this interpretation. Consistent with past assignments, simulations show solitary water usually donates two hydrogen bonds to distinct solvent molecules. Such symmetrically solvated water produces the primary pair of peaks identified in the OH spectra of water in nearly all solvents. We had further proposed that additional features flanking this main peak are due to asymmetric solvation states, states in which only one OH group makes a hydrogen bond to solvent. Such states were found in significant concentrations in all of the systems simulated. Simulations of the OH stretching spectra using a semiclassical description and the vibrational map developed by Auer and Skinner [ J. Chem. Phys. 128, 224511 (2008)] provided semi-quantitative agreement with experiment. Analysis of species-specific spectra also confirmed assignment of the additional features in the experimental spectra to asymmetrically solvated water. The simulations also showed that rapid water motions cause a marked motional narrowing compared to the inhomogeneous limit, and that this narrowing is largely responsible for making the additional features due to minority solvation states manifest in the spectra.

Coexistence of vitreous and crystalline phases of H2O at ambient temperature

Understanding the phase behavior of H₂O is essential in geoscience, extreme biology, biological imaging, chemistry, and physics. Vitreous phases of H₂O are of particular importance since these phases avoid the typical expansion of H₂O during ice-crystal formation. Here, we confirm the existence of vitreous ice and ice VI in mixed-phase samples of H₂O at room temperature and high pressure. We show how Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction alone lead to misleading characterization and understanding of the mixed-phase material, a conclusion supported by molecular dynamics simulations. The coexistence of vitreous and crystalline components of H₂O under these conditions is crucial for experimental studies of biological systems. The results have implications for related metastable transitions in other materials under pressure.

Formation of vitreous ice during rapid compression of water at room temperature is important for biology and the study of biological systems. Here, we show that Raman spectra of rapidly compressed water at greater than 1 GPa at room temperature exhibits the signature of high-density amorphous ice, whereas the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern is dominated by crystalline ice VI. To resolve this apparent contradiction, we used molecular dynamics simulations to calculate full vibrational spectra and diffraction patterns of mixtures of vitreous ice and ice VI, including embedded interfaces between the two phases. We show quantitatively that Raman spectra, which probe the local polarizability with respect to atomic displacements, are dominated by the vitreous phase, whereas a small amount of the crystalline component is readily apparent by XRD. The results of our combined experimental and theoretical studies have implications for detecting vitreous phases of water, survival of biological systems under extreme conditions, and biological imaging. The results provide additional insight into the stable and metastable phases of H₂O as a function of pressure and temperature, as well as of other materials undergoing pressure-induced amorphization and other metastable transitions.

Supercritical Water is not Hydrogen Bonded

Thinking about water is inextricably linked to hydrogen bonds, which are highly directional in character and determine the unique structure of water, in particular its tetrahedral H-bond network. Here, we assess if this common connotation also holds for supercritical water. We employ extensive ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to systematically monitor the evolution of the H-bond network mode of water from room temperature, where it is the hallmark of its fluctuating three-dimensional network structure, to supercritical conditions. Our simulations reveal that the oscillation period required for H-bond vibrations to occur exceeds the lifetime of H-bonds in supercritical water by far. Instead, the corresponding low-frequency intermolecular vibrations of water pairs as seen in supercritical water are found to be well represented by isotropic van-der-Waals interactions only. Based on these findings, we conclude that water in its supercritical phase is not a H-bonded fluid.

Temperature Dependence of the Water Infrared Spectrum: Driving Forces, Isosbestic Points, and Predictions

The temperature derivative of the infrared (IR) spectrum of HOD/D₂O is directly calculated from simulations at a single temperature using a fluctuation theory approach. It is demonstrated, on the basis of an energetic decomposition of the derivative, that the blue shift with increasing temperature is associated with the competition between electrostatic and Lennard-Jones interactions. The same competition gives rise, where their contributions cancel, to a near isosbestic point. The derivative is further used to define an effective internal energy (and entropy) associated with the IR spectrum, and it is shown how a van't Hoff relation can be used to accurately predict the spectrum over a wide range of temperatures. These predictions also explain why a precise isosbestic point is not observed.

Assessing the properties of supercritical water in terms of structural dynamics and electronic polarization effects

Two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy from the gas to liquid phase: density dependent J-scrambling, vibrational relaxation, and the onset of liquid character

Ultrafast 2DIR spectra and pump-probe responses of the N₂O ν₃ asymmetric stretch in SF₆ as a function of density from the gas to supercritical phase and liquid are reported. 2DIR spectra unequivocally reveal free rotor character at all densities studied in the gas and supercritical region. Analysis of the 2DIR spectra determines that J-scrambling or rotational relaxation in N₂O is highly efficient, occurring in ∼1.5 to ∼2 collisions with SF₆ at all non-liquid densities. In contrast, N₂O ν₃ vibrational energy relaxation requires ∼15 collisions, and complete vibrational equilibrium occurs on the ∼ns scale at all densities. An independent binary collision model is sufficient to describe these supercritical state point dynamics. The N₂O ν₃ in liquid SF₆ 2DIR spectrum shows no evidence of free rotor character or spectral diffusion. Using these 2DIR results, hindered rotor or liquid-like character is found in gas and all supercritical solutions for SF₆ densities ≥ρ* = 0.3, and increases with SF₆ density. 2DIR spectral analysis offers direct time domain evidence of critical slowing for SF₆ solutions closest to the critical point density. Applications of 2DIR to other high density and supercritical solution dynamics and descriptions are discussed.
