Tailored coupled cluster theory in varying correlation regimes

Striking the right balance of encoding electron correlation in the Hamiltonian and the wavefunction ansatz

Multi-configurational electronic structure theory delivers the most versatile approximations to many-electron wavefunctions, flexible enough to deal with all sorts of transformations, ranging from electronic excitations, to open-shell molecules and chemical reactions. Multi-configurational models are therefore essential to establish universally applicable, predictive ab initio methods for chemistry. Here, we present a discussion of explicit correlation approaches which address the nagging problem of dealing with static and dynamic electron correlation in multi-configurational active-space approaches. We review the latest developments and then point to their key obstacles. Our discussion is supported by new data obtained with tensor network methods. We argue in favor of simple electron-only correlator expressions that may allow one to define transcorrelated models in which the correlator does not bear a dependence on molecular structure.

Tailored and Externally Corrected Coupled Cluster with Quantum Inputs

We propose to use wave function overlaps obtained from a quantum computer as inputs for the classical split-amplitude techniques, tailored and externally corrected coupled cluster, to achieve balanced treatment of static and dynamic correlation effects in molecular electronic structure simulations. By combining insights from statistical properties of matchgate shadows, which are used to measure quantum trial state overlaps, with classical correlation diagnostics, we can provide quantum resource estimates well into the classically no longer exactly solvable regime. We find that rather imperfect wave functions and remarkably low shot counts are sufficient to cure qualitative failures of plain coupled cluster singles doubles and to obtain chemically precise dynamic correlation energy corrections. We provide insights into which wave function preparation schemes have a chance of yielding quantum advantage, and we test our proposed method using overlaps measured on Google's Sycamore device.

Flexible Ansatz for N-Body Perturbation Theory

We propose a new perturbation theory framework that can be used to help with the projective solution of the Schrödinger equation for arbitrary wave functions. This Flexible Ansatz for N-body Perturbation Theory (FANPT) is based on our previously proposed Flexible Ansatz for the N-body Configuration Interaction (FANCI). We derive recursive FANPT expressions, including arbitrary orders in the perturbation hierarchy. We show that the FANPT equations are well-behaved across a wide range of conditions, including static correlation-dominated configurations and highly nonlinear wave functions.

Coupled cluster-inspired geminal wavefunctions

Electron pairs have an illustrious history in chemistry, from powerful concepts to understanding structural stability and reactive changes to the promise of serving as building blocks of quantitative descriptions of the electronic structure of complex molecules and materials. However, traditionally, two-electron wavefunctions (geminals) have not enjoyed the popularity and widespread use of the more standard single-particle methods. This has changed recently, with a renewed interest in the development of geminal wavefunctions as an alternative to describing strongly correlated phenomena. Hence, there is a need to find geminal methods that are accurate, computationally tractable, and do not demand significant input from the user (particularly via cumbersome and often ill-behaved orbital optimization steps). Here, we propose new families of geminal wavefunctions inspired by the pair coupled cluster doubles ansatz. We present a new hierarchy of two-electron wavefunctions that extends the one-reference orbital idea to other geminals. Moreover, we show how to incorporate single-like excitations in this framework without leaving the quasiparticle picture. We explore the role of imposing seniority restrictions on these wavefunctions and benchmark these new methods on model strongly correlated systems.

Correlation consistent basis sets designed for density functional theory: Third-row atoms (Ga-Br)

The correlation consistent basis sets (cc-pVnZ with n = D, T, Q, 5) for the Ga-Br elements have been redesigned, tuning the sets for use for density functional approximations. Steps to redesign these basis sets for an improved correlation energy recovery and efficiency include truncation of higher angular momentum functions, recontraction of basis set coefficients, and reoptimization of basis set exponents. These redesigned basis sets are compared with conventional cc-pVnZ basis sets and other basis sets, which are, in principle, designed to achieve systematic improvement with respect to increasing basis set size. The convergence of atomic energies, bond lengths, bond dissociation energies, and enthalpies of formation to the Kohn-Sham limit is improved relative to other basis sets where convergence to the Kohn-Sham limit is typically not observed.

The OpenMolcas Web: A Community-Driven Approach to Advancing Computational Chemistry

The developments of the open-source OpenMolcas chemistry software environment since spring 2020 are described, with a focus on novel functionalities accessible in the stable branch of the package or via interfaces with other packages. These developments span a wide range of topics in computational chemistry and are presented in thematic sections: electronic structure theory, electronic spectroscopy simulations, analytic gradients and molecular structure optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, and other new features. This report offers an overview of the chemical phenomena and processes OpenMolcas can address, while showing that OpenMolcas is an attractive platform for state-of-the-art atomistic computer simulations.

Bridging physical intuition and hardware efficiency for correlated electronic states: the local unitary cluster Jastrow ansatz for electronic structure

A prominent goal in quantum chemistry is to solve the molecular electronic structure problem for ground state energy with high accuracy. While classical quantum chemistry is a relatively mature field, the accurate and scalable prediction of strongly correlated states found, e.g., in bond breaking and polynuclear transition metal compounds remains an open problem. Within the context of a variational quantum eigensolver, we propose a new family of ansatzes which provides a more physically appropriate description of strongly correlated electrons than a unitary coupled cluster with single and double excitations (qUCCSD), with vastly reduced quantum resource requirements. Specifically, we present a set of local approximations to the unitary cluster Jastrow wavefunction motivated by Hubbard physics. As in the case of qUCCSD, exactly computing the energy scales factorially with system size on classical computers but polynomially on quantum devices. The local unitary cluster Jastrow ansatz removes the need for SWAP gates, can be tailored to arbitrary qubit topologies (e.g., square, hex, and heavy-hex), and is well-suited to take advantage of continuous sets of quantum gates recently realized on superconducting devices with tunable couplers. The proposed family of ansatzes demonstrates that hardware efficiency and physical transparency are not mutually exclusive; indeed, chemical and physical intuition regarding electron correlation can illuminate a useful path towards hardware-friendly quantum circuits.

Excited states with pair coupled cluster doubles tailored coupled cluster theory

It is known that some non-dynamic effects of electron correlation can be included in coupled cluster theory using a tailoring technique that separates the effects of non-dynamic and dynamic correlations. Recently, the simple pCCD (pair coupled cluster doubles) wavefunction was shown to provide good results for some non-dynamic correlation problems, such as bond-breaking, in a spin-adapted way with no active space selection. In this paper, we report a study of excited states using "tailored coupled cluster singles and doubles," to attempt to use pCCD as a kernel for more complete coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) results for excited states. Several excited states are explored from those primarily due to single excitations to those dominated by doubly excited states and from singlet-triplet splittings for some diradical states. For the first two situations, tailored pCCD-TCCSD offers no improvement over equation of motion-CCSD. However, when we explore the singlet-triplet gap of diradical molecules that are manifestly multi-reference, a pCCD kernel provides improved results, particularly with generalized valence bond orbitals.

A hybrid stochastic configuration interaction-coupled cluster approach for multireference systems

The development of multireference coupled cluster (MRCC) techniques has remained an open area of study in electronic structure theory for decades due to the inherent complexity of expressing a multiconfigurational wavefunction in the fundamentally single-reference coupled cluster framework. The recently developed multireference-coupled cluster Monte Carlo (mrCCMC) technique uses the formal simplicity of the Monte Carlo approach to Hilbert space quantum chemistry to avoid some of the complexities of conventional MRCC, but there is room for improvement in terms of accuracy and, particularly, computational cost. In this paper, we explore the potential of incorporating ideas from conventional MRCC-namely, the treatment of the strongly correlated space in a configuration interaction formalism-to the mrCCMC framework, leading to a series of methods with increasing relaxation of the reference space in the presence of external amplitudes. These techniques offer new balances of stability and cost against accuracy, as well as a means to better explore and better understand the structure of solutions to the mrCCMC equations.

Toward Large-Scale Restricted Active Space Calculations Inspired by the Schmidt Decomposition

We present an alternative, memory-efficient, Schmidt decomposition-based description of the inherently bipartite restricted active space (RAS) scheme, which can be implemented effortlessly within the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method via the dynamically extended active space procedure. Benchmark calculations are compared against state-of-the-art results of C₂ and Cr₂, which are notorious for their multireference character. Our results for ground and excited states together with spectroscopic constants demonstrate that the proposed novel approach, dubbed as DMRG-RAS, which is variational and free of uncontrolled method errors, has the potential to outperfom conventional methods for strongly correlated molecules.

Explicitly Correlated Electronic Structure Calculations with Transcorrelated Matrix Product Operators

In this work, we present the first implementation of the transcorrelated electronic Hamiltonian in an optimization procedure for matrix product states by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. In the transcorrelation ansatz, the electronic Hamiltonian is similarity-transformed with a Jastrow factor to describe the cusp in the wave function at electron-electron coalescence. As a result, the wave function is easier to approximate accurately with the conventional expansion in terms of one-particle basis functions and Slater determinants. The transcorrelated Hamiltonian in first quantization comprises up to three-body interactions, which we deal with in the standard way by applying robust density fitting to two- and three-body integrals entering the second-quantized representation of this Hamiltonian. The lack of hermiticity of the transcorrelated Hamiltonian is taken care of along the lines of the first work on transcorrelated DMRG [ J. Chem. Phys. 2020, 153, 164115] by encoding it as a matrix product operator and optimizing the corresponding ground state wave function with imaginary-time time-dependent DMRG. We demonstrate our quantum chemical transcorrelated DMRG approach at the example of several atoms and first-row diatomic molecules. We show that transcorrelation improves the convergence rate to the complete basis set limit in comparison to conventional DMRG. Moreover, we study extensions of our approach that aim at reducing the cost of handling the matrix product operator representation of the transcorrelated Hamiltonian.

Quantum Proton Effects from Density Matrix Renormalization Group Calculations

We recently introduced [J. Chem. Phys. 2020, 152, 204103] the nuclear-electronic all-particle density matrix renormalization group (NEAP-DMRG) method to solve the molecular Schrödinger equation, based on a stochastically optimized orbital basis, without invoking the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. In this work, we combine the DMRG method with the nuclear-electronic Hartree-Fock (NEHF-DMRG) approach, treating nuclei and electrons on the same footing. Inter- and intraspecies correlations are described within the DMRG method without truncating the excitation degree of the full configuration interaction wave function. We extend the concept of orbital entanglement and mutual information to nuclear-electronic wave functions and demonstrate that they are reliable metrics to detect strong correlation effects. We apply the NEHF-DMRG method to the HeHHe⁺ molecular ion, to obtain accurate proton densities, ground-state total energies, and vibrational transition frequencies by comparison with state-of-the-art data obtained with grid-based approaches and modern configuration interaction methods. For HCN, we improve on the accuracy of the latter approaches with respect to both the ground-state absolute energy and proton density, which is a major challenge for multireference nuclear-electronic state-of-the-art methods.

Assessing the Accuracy of Tailored Coupled Cluster Methods Corrected by Electronic Wave Functions of Polynomial Cost

Tailored coupled cluster theory represents a computationally inexpensive way to describe static and dynamical electron correlation effects. In this work, we scrutinize the performance of various coupled cluster methods tailored by electronic wave functions of polynomial cost. Specifically, we focus on frozen-pair coupled cluster (fpCC) methods, which are tailored by pair-coupled cluster doubles (pCCD), and coupled cluster theory tailored by matrix product state wave functions optimized by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. As test system, we selected a set of various small- and medium-sized molecules containing diatomics (N₂, F₂, C₂, CN⁺, CO, BN, BO⁺, and Cr₂) and molecules (ammonia, ethylene, cyclobutadiene, benzene, hydrogen chains, rings, and cuboids) for which the conventional single-reference coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) method is not able to produce accurate results for spectroscopic constants, potential energy surfaces, and barrier heights. Most importantly, DMRG-tailored and pCCD-tailored approaches yield similar errors in spectroscopic constants and potential energy surfaces compared to accurate theoretical and/or experimental reference data. Although fpCC methods provide a reliable description for the dissociation pathway of molecules featuring single and quadruple bonds, they fail in the description of triple or hextuple bond-breaking processes or avoided crossing regions.

Exploration of interlacing and avoided crossings in a manifold of potential energy curves by a unitary group adapted state specific multi-reference perturbation theory (UGA-SSMRPT)

The Unitary Group Adapted State-Specific Multi-Reference Perturbation Theory (UGA-SSMRPT2) developed by Mukherjee et al. [J. Comput. Chem. 36, 670 (2015)] has successfully realized the goal of studying bond dissociation in a numerically stable, spin-preserving, and size-consistent manner. We explore and analyze here the efficacy of the UGA-SSMRPT2 theory in the description of the avoided crossings and interlacings between a manifold of potential energy curves for states belonging to the same space-spin symmetry. Three different aspects of UGA-SSMRPT2 have been studied: (a) We introduce and develop the most rigorous version of UGA-SSMRPT2 that emerges from the rigorous version of UGA-SSMRCC utilizing a linearly independent virtual manifold; we call this the "projection" version of UGA-SSMRPT2 (UGA-SSMRPT2 scheme P). We compare and contrast this approach with our earlier formulation that used extra sufficiency conditions via amplitude equations (UGA-SSMRPT2 scheme A). (b) We present the results for a variety of electronic states of a set of molecules, which display the striking accuracy of both the two versions of UGA-SSMRPT2 with respect to three different situations involving weakly avoided crossings, moderate/strongly avoided crossings, and interlacing in a manifold of potential energy curves (PECs) of the same symmetry. Accuracy of our results has been benchmarked against IC-MRCISD + Q.
