Abstract
Introduction Coronaviruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), canine coronavirus (CCoV), and feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), have the potential for interspecies transmission. These viruses can be present in complex environments where humans, dogs, and cats coexist, posing a significant threat to both human and animal safety. Methods and results In this study, we developed a novel multiplex TaqMan-probe-based real-time PCR assay for the simultaneous detection and differentiation of SARS-CoV-2, CCoV, and FIPV. Specific primers and TaqMan fluorescent probes were designed based on the N region of SARS-CoV-2 and FIPV, as well as the S region of CCoV, which demonstrated a remarkable sensitivity and specificity toward the targeted viruses, as few as 21.83, 17.25 and 9.25 copies/μL for SARS-CoV-2, CCoV and FIPV, respectively. The standard curve constructed by the optimized method in our present study showed a high amplification efficiency within or near the optimal range of 91% to 116% and R(2) values were at least 0.95 for the abovementioned coronaviruses. A total of 91 samples, including six plasmid mixed mock samples, four virus fluid mixing simulated samples, and 81 clinical samples, were analyzed using this method. Results demonstrated strong agreement with conventional approaches. Discussion By enabling the simultaneous detection of three viruses, this method enhances testing efficiency while decreasing costs. Importantly, it provides a valuable tool for the prevalence and geographical distribution of suspected and co-infected animals, ultimately contributing to the advancement of both animal and public health.

Abstract
Airborne particles can spread quickly and enter human respiratory system via inhalation, causing chronic diseases, even cancer. Although recent studies have informed of toxicity of various pollutants, understanding the transport and deposition characteristics of particles in lower respiratory tract is still challenging. The current study proposes a novel model to simulate flow field change from the entrance of lower respiratory tract to pulmonary acinus, while studying particle transport and deposition characteristics. This model for lower respiratory tract with several bronchial extensions containing virtual pulmonary acinus is calculated using computational fluid dynamics and dynamics mesh. The results showed that in the first 10 generations of the lower respiratory tract, vortices and gravity interfered with particles' trajectory, affecting particle deposition distribution. For the first to the tenth-generation respiratory tract, coarse particles were deposited throughout almost the whole respiratory tract model. In contrast, ultrafine particles did not deposit in the higher-generation respiratory tract. The particle enrichment ability of various lobes was uneven with three particle deposition fraction variation patterns. Virtual pulmonary acinus influenced particle deposition and distribution because of vortex ring's trapped ability during expansion and contraction. This new attempt to build a virtual pulmonary acinus model to simulate particle deposition effects in human respiratory system may provide a reference for studying the toxicities of inhalable particles in the exposed human body.

Abstract
Human-infecting pathogens that transmit through the air pose a significant threat to public health. As a prominent instance, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that caused the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the world in an unprecedented manner over the past few years. Despite the dissipating pandemic gloom, the lessons we have learned in dealing with pathogen-laden aerosols should be thoroughly reviewed because the airborne transmission risk may have been grossly underestimated. From a bioanalytical chemistry perspective, on-site airborne pathogen detection can be an effective non-pharmaceutic intervention (NPI) strategy, with on-site airborne pathogen detection and early-stage infection risk evaluation reducing the spread of disease and enabling life-saving decisions to be made. In light of this, we summarize the recent advances in highly efficient pathogen-laden aerosol sampling approaches, bioanalytical sensing technologies, and the prospects for airborne pathogen exposure measurement and evidence-based transmission interventions. We also discuss open challenges facing general bioaerosols detection, such as handling complex aerosol samples, improving sensitivity for airborne pathogen quantification, and establishing a risk assessment system with high spatiotemporal resolution for mitigating airborne transmission risks. This review provides a multidisciplinary outlook for future opportunities to improve the on-site airborne pathogen detection techniques, thereby enhancing the preparedness for more on-site bioaerosols measurement scenarios, such as monitoring high-risk pathogens on airplanes, weaponized pathogen aerosols, influenza variants at the workplace, and pollutant correlated with sick building syndromes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The lung Extracellular Matrix (ECM) contains a considerable part of the parenchymal cells. It contains three essential components: elastin and collagen within a proteoglycan (PG) viscoelastic network. Elastin provides the lung's elasticity property, a necessity for normal breathing, while collagen prepares structural support and strength, and PGs give stability and cushioning within tissue loading. Bacterial and viral respiratory diseases are dependent on changes in the ECM ingredients, which result in an alteration of the lung tissue strength. PURPOSE In the present study, this variation was investigated by changing the volume ratio of the ECM ingredients in the viscoelastic model. RESULTS As a result, the relaxation curves continuously declined by reducing the volume ratios of elastin, collagen, and PGs; subsequently, the lung stiffness decreased. Also, the Standard Linear Solid (SLS) model-based results demonstrated excellent accordance with empirical data with only minor deviations. The resting relaxation modulus and the creep modulus for the ECM tissue were 51 kPa and approximately 0.02 kPa, respectively, and the maximum total modulus of elasticity reached 121 kPa. CONCLUSIONS Moreover, this model demonstrates individual alveolar mechanical behaviours and adds another pathway to the generalized Kelvin-Voigt and Maxwell models in predicting the progress of lung diseases.

Abstract
Aerosols carrying the virus inside enclosed spaces is an important mode of transmission for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), as supported by growing evidence. Urban subways are one of the most frequented enclosed spaces. The subway is a utilitarian and low-cost transit system in modern society. However, studies are yet to demonstrate patterns of viral transmission in subway heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. To fill this gap, we performed a computational investigation of the airflow (and associated aerosol transmission) in an urban subway cabin equipped with an HVAC system. We employed a transport equation for aerosol concentration, which was added to the basic buoyant solver to resolve the aerosol transmission inside the subway cabin. This was achieved by considering the thermal, turbulent, and induced ventilation flow effects. Using the probability of encountering aerosols on sampling surfaces crossing the passenger breathing zones, we detected the highest infection risk zones inside the urban subway under different settings. We proposed a novel HVAC system that can impede aerosol spread, both vertically and horizontally, inside the cabin. In the conventional model, the maximum probability of encountering aerosols from the breathing of infected individuals near the fresh-air ducts was equal to 51.2%. This decreased to 3.5% in the proposed HVAC model. Overall, using the proposed HVAC system for urban subways led to a decrease in the mean value of the probability of encountering the aerosol by approximately 84% compared with that of the conventional system.

Abstract
Fly ash is a common solid residue of incineration plants and poses a great environmental concern because of its toxicity upon inhalation exposure. The inhalation health impacts of fly ash is closely related to its transport and deposition in the human respiratory system which warrants significant research for health guideline setting and inhalation exposure protection. In this study, a series of fly ash transport and deposition experiments have been carried out in a bifurcation airway model by optical aerosol sampling analysis. Three types of fly ash samples of different morphologies were tested and their respiratory deposition and transport processes were compared. The deposition efficiencies were calculated and relevant transport dynamics mechanisms were discussed. The influences of physiological conditions such as breathing rate, duration, and fly ash physical properties (size, morphology, and specific surface area) were investigated. The deposition characteristics of respiratory particles containing SARS-CoV-2 has also been analyzed, which could further provide some guidance on COVID-19 prevention. The results could potentially serve as a basis for setting health guidelines and recommending personal respiratory protective equipment for fly ash handlers and people who are in the high exposure risk environment for COVID-19 transmission.

Abstract
Understanding nano-particle inhalation in human lung airways helps targeted drug delivery for treating lung diseases. A wide range of numerical models have been developed to analyse nano-particle transport and deposition (TD) in different parts of airways. However, a precise understanding of nano-particle TD in large-scale airways is still unavailable in the literature. This study developed an efficient one-path numerical model for simulating nano-particle TD in large-scale lung airway models. This first-ever one-path numerical approach simulates airflow and nano-particle TD in generations 0-11 of the human lung, accounting for 93% of the whole airway length. The one-path model enables the simulation of particle TD in many generations of airways with an affordable time. The particle TD of 5 nm, 10 nm and 20 nm particles is simulated at inhalation flow rates for two different physical activities: resting and moderate activity. It is found that particle deposition efficiency of 5 nm particles is 28.94% higher than 20 nm particles because of the higher dispersion capacity. It is further proved that the diffusion mechanism dominates the particle TD in generations 0-11. The deposition efficiency decreases with the increase of generation number irrespective of the flow rate and particle size. The effects of the particle size and flow rate on the escaping rate of each generation are opposite to the corresponding effects on the deposition rate. The quantified deposition and escaping rates at generations 0-11 provide valuable guidelines for drug delivery in human lungs.

Abstract
The depletion of air quality is a major problem that is faced around the globe. In Australia, the pollutants emitted by bushfires play an important role in making the air polluted. These pollutants in the air result in many adverse impacts on the environment. This paper analysed the air pollution from the bushfires from November 2019 to July 2020 and identified how it affects the human respiratory system. The bush fires burnt over 13 million hectares, destroying over 2400 buildings. While these immediate effects were devastating, the long-term effects were just as devastating, with air pollution causing thousands of people to be admitted to hospitals and emergency departments because of respiratory complications. The pollutant that caused most of the health effects throughout Australia was Particulate Matter (PM) PM2.5 and PM10. Data collection and analysis were covered in this paper to illustrate where and when PM2.5 and PM10, and other pollutants were at their most concerning levels. Susceptible areas were identified by analysing environmental factors such as temperature and wind speed. The study identified how these pollutants in the air vary from region to region in the same time interval. This study also focused on how these pollutant distributions vary according to the temperature, which helps to determine the relationship between the heatwave and air quality. A computational model for PM2.5 aerosol transport to the realistic airways was also developed to understand the bushfire exhaust aerosol transport and deposition in airways. This study would improve the knowledge of the heat wave and bushfire meteorology and corresponding respiratory health impacts.

Abstract
Airway stenosis is a global respiratory health problem that is caused by airway injury, endotracheal intubation, malignant tumor, lung aging, or autoimmune diseases. A precise understanding of the airflow dynamics and pharmaceutical aerosol transport through the multi-stenosis airways is vital for targeted drug delivery, and is missing from the literature. The object of this study primarily relates to behaviors and nanoparticle transport through the multi-stenosis sections of the trachea and upper airways. The combination of a CT-based mouth–throat model and Weibel’s model was adopted in the ANSYS FLUENT solver for the numerical simulation of the Euler–Lagrange (E-L) method. Comprehensive grid refinement and validation were performed. The results from this study indicated that, for all flow rates, a higher velocity was usually found in the stenosis section. The maximum velocity was found in the stenosis section having a 75% reduction, followed by the stenosis section having a 50% reduction. Increasing flow rate resulted in higher wall shear stress, especially in stenosis sections. The highest pressure was found in the mouth–throat section for all flow rates. The lowest pressure was usually found in stenosis sections, especially in the third generation. Particle escape rate was dependent on flow rate and inversely dependent on particle size. The overall deposition efficiency was observed to be significantly higher in the mouth–throat and stenosis sections compared to other areas. However, this was proven to be only the case for a particle size of 1 nm. Moreover, smaller nanoparticles were usually trapped in the mouth–throat section, whereas larger nanoparticle sizes escaped through the lower airways from the left side of the lung; this accounted for approximately 50% of the total injected particles, and 36% escaped from the right side. The findings of this study can improve the comprehensive understanding of airflow patterns and nanoparticle deposition. This would be beneficial in work with polydisperse particle deposition for treatment of comprehensive stenosis with specific drugs under various disease conditions.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to severe social and economic disruption worldwide. Although currently no consent has been reached on a specific therapy that can treat COVID-19 effectively, several inhalation therapy strategies have been proposed to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection. These strategies include inhalations of antiviral drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, and vaccines. To investigate how to enhance the therapeutic effect by increasing the delivery efficiency (DE) of the inhaled aerosolized drug particles, a patient-specific tracheobronchial (TB) tree from the trachea up to generation 6 (G6) with moderate COVID-19 symptoms was selected as a testbed for the in silico trials of targeted drug delivery to the lung regions with pneumonia alba, i.e., the severely affected lung segments (SALS). The 3D TB tree geometry was reconstructed from spiral computed tomography (CT) scanned images. The airflow field and particle trajectories were solved using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based Euler-Lagrange model at an inhalation flow rate of 15 L/min. Particle release maps, which record the deposition locations of the released particles, were obtained at the inlet according to the particle trajectories. Simulation results show that particles with different diameters have similar release maps for targeted delivery to SALS. Point-source aerosol release (PSAR) method can significantly enhance the DE into the SALS. A C++ program has been developed to optimize the location of the PSAR tube. The optimized simulations indicate that the PSAR approach can at least increase the DE of the SALS by a factor of 3.2× higher than conventional random-release drug-aerosol inhalation. The presence of the PSAR tube only leads to a 7.12% change in DE of the SALS. This enables the fast design of a patient-specific treatment for reginal lung diseases.

The Effect of Metro Construction on the Air Quality in the Railway Transport System of Sydney, Australia. ATMOSPHERE 2022. Abstract
Sydney Metro is the biggest project of Australia’s public transport, which was designed to provide passengers with more trains and faster services. This project was first implemented in 2017 and is planned to be completed in 2024. As presented, the project is currently in the construction stage located on the ground stations of the Sydney Trains Bankstown line (T3). Based on this stage, several construction activities will generate air pollutants, which will affect the air quality around construction areas. Moreover, it might cause health problems to people around there and also the passengers who usually take the train on the T3 line. However, there is no specific data for air quality inside the train that may be affected by the construction from each area. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the air quality inside the train carriage of all related stations from the T3 line. A sampling campaign was conducted over 3 months to analyze particulate matter (PM) concentration, the main indoor pollutants including formaldehyde (HCHO) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC). The results of the T3 line were analyzed and compared to Airport & South line (T8) that were not affected by the project’s construction. The results of this study indicate that Sydney Metro construction activities insignificantly affected the air quality inside the train. Average PM2.5 and PM10 inside the train of T3 line in the daytime were slightly higher than in the nighttime. The differences in PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations from these periods were around 6.8 μg/m3 and 12.1 μg/m3, respectively. The PM concentrations inside the train from the T3 line were slightly higher than the T8 line. However, these concentrations were still lower than those recommended by the national air quality standards. For HCHO and TVOC, the average HCHO and TVOC concentrations were less than the recommendation criteria.

Abstract
The efficient generation of high concentrations of fine-particle, pure surfactant aerosols provides the possibility of new, rapid, and effective treatment modalities for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). SUPRAER-CATM is a patented technology by Kaer BiotherapeuticsTM, which is a new class of efficient aerosol drug generation and delivery system using Compressor Air (CA). SUPRAER-CA is capable of aerosolizing relatively viscous solutions or suspensions of proteins and surfactants and of delivering them as pure fine particle dry aerosols. In this Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study, we select a number of sites within the upper 17 generations of the human respiratory tract for calculation of the deposition of dry pulmonary surfactant aerosol particles. We predict the percentage of inhaled dry pulmonary surfactant aerosol arriving from the respiratory bronchioles to the terminal alveolar sacs. The dry pulmonary surfactant aerosols, with a Mass Median Aerodynamic Diameter (MMAD) of 2.6 µm and standard deviation of 1.9 µm, are injected into the respiratory tract at a dry surfactant aerosol flow rate of 163 mg/min to be used in the CFD study at an air inhalation flow rate of 44 L/min. This CFD study in the upper 17th generation of a male adult lung has shown computationally that the penetration fraction (PF) is approximately 25% for the inhaled surfactant aerosols. In conclusion, an ARDS patient might receive approximately one gram of inspired dry surfactant aerosol during an administration period of one hour as a possible means of further inflating partly collapsed alveoli.

Abstract
Smokers are at a higher risk of laryngeal cancer, which is a type of head and neck cancer in which cancer cells proliferate and can metastasize to other tissues after a tumor has formed. Cigarette smoke greatly reduces the inhaled air quality and can also lead to laryngeal cancer. In this study, the upper airway of a 70-year-old smoker with laryngeal cancer was reconstructed by taking a CT scan using Mimics software. To solve the governing equations, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a pressure base approach was used with the help of Ansys 2021 R1 software. As a result, the maximum turbulence intensity occurred in the larynx. At 13 L/min, 55 L/min, and 100 L/min, the maximum turbulence intensity was 1.1, 3.5, and 6.1, respectively. The turbulence intensity in the respiratory system is crucial because it demonstrates the ability to transfer energy. The maximum wall shear stress (WSS) also occurred in the larynx. At 13 L/min, 55 L/min, and 100 L/min, the maximum WSS was 0.62 Pa, 5.4 Pa, and 12.4 Pa, respectively. The WSS index cannot be calculated in vivo and should be calculated in vitro. Excessive WSS in the epiglottis is inappropriate and can lead to an airway obstruction. Furthermore, real mathematical modeling outcomes provide an approach for future prevention, treatment, and management planning by forecasting the zones prone to an acceleration of disease progression. In this regard, accurate computational modeling leads to pre-visualization in surgical planning to define the best reformative techniques to determine the most probable patient condition consequences.

Abstract
Genetic variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) have been globally surging and devastating many countries around the world. There are at least eleven reported variants dedicated with inevitably catastrophic consequences. In 2021, the most dominant Delta and Omicron variants were estimated to lead to more severity and deaths than other variants. Furthermore, these variants have some contagious characteristics involving high transmissibility, more severe illness, and an increased mortality rate. All outbreaks caused by the Delta variant have been rapidly skyrocketing in infection cases in communities despite tough restrictions in 2021. Apart from it, the United States, the United Kingdom and other high-rate vaccination rollout countries are still wrestling with this trend because the Delta variant can result in a significant number of breakthrough infections. However, the pandemic has changed since the latest SARS-CoV-2 variant in late 2021 in South Africa, Omicron. The preliminary data suggest that the Omicron variant possesses 100-fold greater than the Delta variant in transmissibility. Therefore, this paper aims to review these characteristics based on the available meta-data and information from the first emergence to recent days. Australia and the five most affected countries, including the United States, India, Brazil, France, as well as the United Kingdom, are selected in order to review the transmissibility, severity and fatality due to Delta and Omicron variants. Finally, the vaccination programs for each country are also reviewed as the main factor in prevention.

Abstract
Humidity sensors are important for humidity detection in many storage and manufacturing processes. Issues like sensibility, response rate, controllability, and material and preparation process costs need to be taken into consideration for practical applications. Herein, we report an investigation on a series of azobenzene/acid binary systems using easily accessible compounds, whose thin films display reversible and widely tunable color changes in response to humidity stimulation, with high sensitivity, fast color change, and recovery speed. The interesting properties for colorimetric humidity sensing are showcased with potential applications in dynamic art painting, smart windows, and respiration monitoring.

Abstract
Undoubtedly, the construction of the biomechanical geometry systems with the help of computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has made a significant advancement in studying in vitro numerical models as accurately as possible. However, some simplifying assumptions in the computational studies of the respiratory system have caused errors and deviations from the in vivo actual state. The most important of these hypotheses is how to generate volume from the point cloud exported from CT or MRI images, not paying attention to the wall thickness and its effect in computational fluid dynamic method, statistical logic of aerosol trap in software; and most importantly, the viscoelastic effect of respiratory tract wall in living tissue pointed in the fluid-structure interaction method. So that applying the viscoelastic dynamic mesh effect in the form of the moving deforming mesh can be very effective in achieving more appropriate response quality. Also, changing the volume fraction of the pulmonary extracellular matrix constituents leads to changes in elastic modulus (storage modulus) and the viscous modulus (loss modulus) of lung tissue. Therefore, in the biomedical computational methods where the model wall is considered flexible, the viscoelastic properties of the texture must be considered correctly.

Abstract
Understanding transportation and deposition (TD) of aerosol particles in the human respiratory system can help clinical treatment of lung diseases using medicines. The lung airway diameters and the breathing capacity of human lungs normally increase with age until the age of 30. Many studies have analyzed the particle TD in the human lung airways. However, the knowledge of the nanoparticle TD in airways of infants and children with varying inhalation flow rates is still limited in the literature. This study investigates nanoparticle (5 nm ≤ dp ≤ 500 nm) TD in the lungs of infants, children, and adults. The inhalation air flow rates corresponding to three ages are considered as Qin=3.22 L/min (infant), 8.09 L/min (Child), and Qin=14 L/min (adult). It is found that less particles are deposited in upper lung airways (G0–G3) than in lower airways (G12–G15) in the lungs of all the three age groups. The results suggest that the particle deposition efficiency in lung airways increases with the decrease of particle size due to the Brownian diffusion mechanism. About 3% of 500 nm particles are deposited in airways G12–G15 for the three age groups. As the particle size is decreased to 5 nm, the deposition rate in G12–G15 is increased to over 95%. The present findings can help medical therapy by individually simulating the distribution of drug-aerosol for the patient-specific lung.

Abstract
The recent outbreak of the COVID-19 causes significant respirational health problems, including high mortality rates worldwide. The deadly corona virus-containing aerosol enters the atmospheric air through sneezing, exhalation, or talking, assembling with the particulate matter, and subsequently transferring to the respiratory system. This recent outbreak illustrates that the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus-2 is deadlier for aged people than for other age groups. It is evident that the airway diameter reduces with age, and an accurate understanding of SARS aerosol transport through different elderly people's airways could potentially help the overall respiratory health assessment, which is currently lacking in the literature. This first-ever study investigates SARS COVID-2 aerosol transport in age-specific airway systems. A highly asymmetric age-specific airway model and fluent solver (ANSYS 19.2) are used for the investigation. The computational fluid dynamics measurement predicts higher SARS COVID-2 aerosol concentration in the airway wall for older adults than for younger people. The numerical study reports that the smaller SARS coronavirus-2 aerosol deposition rate in the right lung is higher than that in the left lung, and the opposite scenario occurs for the larger SARS coronavirus-2 aerosol rate. The numerical results show a fluctuating trend of pressure at different generations of the age-specific model. The findings of this study would improve the knowledge of SARS coronavirus-2 aerosol transportation to the upper airways which would thus ameliorate the targeted aerosol drug delivery system.

Abstract
Exposure to toxic particles from smoke generated either from bush fire, stable burning, or direct smoking is very harmful to our health. The tiny particles easily penetrate deep into the lungs after exposure and damage the airways. Tobacco smoking causes the direct emission of 2.6 million tons of CO2 and 5.2 million tons of methane annually into the atmosphere. Nevertheless, it is one of the significant contributors to various respiratory diseases leading to lung cancer. These particles’ deposition in the human airway is computed in the present article for refining our understanding of the adverse health effects due to smoke particle inhalation, especially cigarette smoke. Until recently, little work has been reported to account for the transient flow pattern of cigarette smoking. Consideration of transient flow may change the deposition pattern of the particle. A high-resolution CT scan image of the respiratory tract model consisting of the oral cavity, throat, trachea, and first to sixth generations of the lungs helps predict cigarette smoke particle (CSP) deposition. With the same scan, a realistic geometric model of the human airways of an adult subject is used to simulate the transport of air and particle. The CSP deposition is determined at different locations from the oral cavity to the sixth generation of the bronchi. In addition, an unsteady breathing curve indicative of realistic smoking behavior is utilized to represent the breathing conditions accurately. The discrete phase model (DPM) technique is used to determine smoke particle deposition in the human airways. It is found that the deposition increases with the size of the smoke particle. Particles tend to deposit in the oral cavity around the bifurcation junction of the airways. The deposition fraction of CSP with the realistic waveform of smoking is found to be smaller compared to that during the stable flow condition. It is also observed that the fine particles (0.1–1.0 micron) escape to lower generations, leading to higher deposition of fine particles in the deeper airways. The outcome of the study is helpful for understanding smoke-related pulmonary complications.
