Measuring the Magnetic Anisotropy of Metal-Metal Multiple Bonds: The Importance of Correcting for Ligand Effects

We describe the synthesis and characterization of the quadruply-bonded dimer Mo2(CH2NMe2BH3)4 in which each molybdenum(II) center is bound to two chelating boranatodimethylaminomethyl (BDAM) ligands. The BDAM anions bind to the metal at one end by a metal-carbon σ bond and at the other by a three-center M-H-B interaction. Each BDAM ligand chelates to a single Mo atom so that the metal-metal bond is unbridged; the Mo-Mo distance is 2.114(2) Å. Structural and solution NMR data, analyzed via McConnell's equation and supported by DFT calculations, show that the magnetic anisotropies associated with highly polarizable and π-bonding ligands (such as chloride groups and aryl rings) can greatly affect the NMR chemical shifts of reporter groups, so that ignoring their contributions leads to significant overestimates of the anisotropy due just to the metal-metal bond. We propose a method to quantify and correct for the magnetic anisotropy effects arising from the ligands. Application of this method to Mo2(BDAM)4 indicates that the magnetic anisotropy of the Mo-Mo quadruple bond in this molecule is about -800 × 10-36 m3 molecule-1. Anisotropies significantly higher than this value (as sometimes reported in the prior literature) are most likely incorrect.

Synthesis and Magnetic Properties of Bis-Halobenzene Decamethyldysprosocenium Cations

The decamethyldysprosocenium cation, [Dy(Cp*)2]+ (Cp* = {C5Me5}), was a target single-molecule magnet (SMM) prior to the isolation of larger dysprosocenium cations, which have recently shown magnetic memory effects up to 80 K. However, the relatively short Dy···Cp*centroid distances of [Dy(Cp*)2]+, together with the reduced resonance of its vibrational modes with electronic states compared to larger dysprosocenium cations, could lead to more favorable SMM behavior. Here, we report the synthesis and magnetic properties of a series of solvated adducts containing bis-halobenzene decamethyldysprosocenium cations, namely [Dy(Cp*)2(PhX-κ-X)2][Al{OC(CF3)3}4] (X = F or Cl) and [Dy(Cp*)2(C6H4F2-κ2-F,F)(C6H4F2-κ-F)][Al{OC(CF3)3}4]. These complexes were prepared by the sequential reaction of [Dy(Cp*)2(μ-BH4)]∞ with allylmagnesium chloride and [NEt3H][Al{OC(CF3)3}4], followed by recrystallization from parent halobenzenes. The complexes were characterized by powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR and ATR-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and SQUID magnetometry; experimental data were rationalized by a combination of density functional theory and ab initio calculations. We find that bis-halobenzene adducts of the [Dy(Cp*)2]+ cation exhibit highly bent Cp*···Dy···Cp* angles; these cations are also susceptible to decomposition by C-X (X = F, Cl, Br) activation and displacement of halobenzenes by O-donor ligands. The effective energy barrier to reversal of magnetization measured for [Dy(Cp*)2(PhF-κ-F)2][Al{OC(CF3)3}4] (930(6) cm-1) sets a new record for SMMs containing {Dy(Cp*)2} fragments, though all SMM parameters are lower than would be predicted for an isolated [Dy(Cp*)2]+ cation, as expected due to transverse ligand fields introduced by halobenzenes and the large deviation of the Cp*···Dy···Cp* angle from linearity promoting magnetic relaxation.

Three-Center M-H-B Bonds Are Strong Field Interactions. Synthesis and Characterization of M(CH2NMe2BH3)3 Complexes of Titanium, Chromium, and Cobalt

We describe new compounds of stoichiometry M(CH2NMe2BH3)3 (M = Ti, Cr, and Co), each of which contains three chelating boranatodimethylaminomethyl (BDAM) ligands. In all three compounds, the BDAM anion, which is isoelectronic and isostructural with the neopentyl group, is bound to the metal center at one end by a metal-carbon σ bond and at the other by one three-center M-H-B interaction. The crystal structures show that the d1 titanium(III) compound is trigonal prismatic (or eight-coordinate, if two longer-ranged M···H interactions with the BH3 groups are included), whereas the d3 chromium(III) compound and the d6 cobalt(III) compounds are both fac-octahedral. The Cr and Co compounds exhibit two rapid dynamic processes in solution: exchange between the Δ and Λ enantiomers and exchange of the terminal and bridging hydrogen atoms on boron. For the Co complex, the barrier for Δ/Λ exchange (ΔG⧧298 = 10.1 kcal mol-1) is significantly smaller than those seen in other octahedral cobalt(III) compounds; DFT calculations suggest that Bailar twist and dissociative pathways for Δ/Λ exchange are both possible mechanisms. The UV-vis absorption spectra of the cobalt(III) and chromium(III) species show that the ligand field splittings Δo caused by the M-H-B interactions are unexpectedly large, thus placing them high on the spectrochemical series (near ammonia and alkyl groups); their nephelauxetic effect is also large. The DFT calculations suggest that these properties of M-H-B interactions are in part a consequence of their three-center nature, which delocalizes electron density away from the metal center and reduces electron-electron repulsions.

Electrospray Ionization Tandem Mass Spectrometry and DFT Survey of Copper(I) Ate Complexes Containing Coordinated Borohydride Anions

Copper(I) borohydride ate complexes of the type Cat⁺[XCu(BH₄)]^- have been previously postulated as intermediates in the reactions of copper salts with borohydride. Negative ion electrospray ionization of an acetonitrile solution of copper(I) phenylacetylide with a 10-fold excess of sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) revealed the formation of a diverse range of mononuclear, dinuclear and trinuclear cuprates with different numbers of BH₄^-, H^- and CN^- ligands, the latter likely being formed by abstraction of CN^- from the acetonitrile solvent. Collision-induced dissociation was used to examine the fragmentation reactions of the following borohydride containing cuprates: [Cu(H)(BH₄)]^-, [Cu(BH₄)₂]^-, [Cu(BH₄)(CN)]^-, [Cu₂(H)(BH₄)₂]^-, [Cu₂(H)₂(BH₄)]^-, [Cu₂(BH₄)₂(CN)]^-, [Cu₂(H)(BH₄)(CN)]^-, [Cu₃(H)(BH₄)₃]^-, [Cu₃(H)₂(BH₄)₂]^-, [Cu₃(H)₃(BH₄)]^-, [Cu₃(BH₄)₂(CN)₂]^-, and [Cu₃(H)(BH₄)₂(CN)]^-. In all cases, BH₃ loss is observed. For many of the dinuclear and trinuclear complexes cluster fragmentation by loss of CuH was also observed. In the case of [Cu₂(H)₂(BH₄)]^- and [Cu₃(H)₃(BH₄)]^-, loss of H₂ was also observed. DFT calculations were used to explore potential structures of the various borohydride-containing cuprates and to predict the overall reaction energetics for the various fragmentation channels.

Rare Earth Starting Materials and Methodologies for Synthetic Chemistry

The number of rare earth (RE) starting materials used in synthesis is staggering, ranging from simple binary metal-halide salts to borohydrides and "designer reagents" such as alkyl and organoaluminate complexes. This review collates the most important starting materials used in RE synthetic chemistry, including essential information on their preparations and uses in modern synthetic methodologies. The review is divided by starting material category and supporting ligands (i.e., metals as synthetic precursors, halides, borohydrides, nitrogen donors, oxygen donors, triflates, and organometallic reagents), and in each section relevant synthetic methodologies and applications are discussed.

Low-Valent Titanium Species Stabilized with Aluminum/Boron Hydride Fragments

Low-valent titanium species were prepared by reaction of [TiCp*X₃ ] (Cp*=η⁵ -C₅ Me₅ ; X=Cl, Br, Me) with LiEH₄ (E=Al, B) or BH₃ (thf), and their structures elucidated by experimental and theoretical methods. The treatment of trihalides [TiCp*X₃ ] with LiAlH₄ in ethereal solvents (L) leads to the hydride-bridged heterometallic complexes [{TiCp*(μ-H)}₂ {(μ-H)₂ AlX(L)}₂ ] (L=thf, X=Cl, Br; L=OEt₂ , X=Cl). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations for those compounds reveal an open-shell singlet ground state with a Ti-Ti bond and can be described as titanium(II) species. The theoretical analyses also show strong interactions between the Ti-Ti bond and the empty s orbitals of the Al atom of the AlH₂ XL fragments, which behave as σ-accepting (Z-type) ligands. Analogous reactions of [TiCp*X₃ ] with LiBH₄ (2 and 3 equiv.) in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature and at 85 °C lead to the titanium(III) compounds [{TiCp*(BH₄ )(μ-X)}₂ ] (X=Cl, Br) and [{TiCp*(BH₄ )(μ-BH₄ )}₂ ], respectively. The treatment of [TiCp*Me₃ ] with 4 and 5 equiv. of BH₃ (thf) produces the diamagnetic [{TiCp*(BH₃ Me)}₂ (μ-B₂ H₆ )] and paramagnetic [{TiCp*(μ-B₂ H₆ )}₂ ] complexes, respectively.

Slow magnetic relaxation in distorted tetrahedral Dy(III) aryloxide complexes

Three distorted tetrahedral Dy(III) aryloxide complexes, [Na(THF)₆][Dy(OAr^Ad₂tBu)₂Cl₂] (1) (OAr^Ad₂tBu = OC₆H₂Adamantyl₂-2,6-^tBu-4) and [Na(THF)₆][Dy(OMes*)₃X] (X = Cl, 2; BH₄, 3), (OMes* = OC₆H₂^tBu₃-2,4,6) exhibit easy axis magnetic anisotropy and slow magnetic relaxation at zero field, with relaxation rates 1 < 2 < 3.

Thermodynamic Hydricity of Small Borane Clusters and Polyhedral closo-Boranes

Thermodynamic hydricity (HDA^MeCN) determined as Gibbs free energy (ΔG°[H]⁻) of the H⁻ detachment reaction in acetonitrile (MeCN) was assessed for 144 small borane clusters (up to 5 boron atoms), polyhedral closo-boranes dianions [B_nH_n]²⁻, and their lithium salts Li₂[B_nH_n] (n = 5–17) by DFT method [M06/6-311++G(d,p)] taking into account non-specific solvent effect (SMD model). Thermodynamic hydricity values of diborane B₂H₆ (HDA^MeCN = 82.1 kcal/mol) and its dianion [B₂H₆]²⁻ (HDA^MeCN = 40.9 kcal/mol for Li₂[B₂H₆]) can be selected as border points for the range of borane clusters’ reactivity. Borane clusters with HDA^MeCN below 41 kcal/mol are strong hydride donors capable of reducing CO₂ (HDA^MeCN = 44 kcal/mol for HCO₂⁻), whereas those with HDA^MeCN over 82 kcal/mol, predominately neutral boranes, are weak hydride donors and less prone to hydride transfer than to proton transfer (e.g., B₂H₆, B₄H₁₀, B₅H₁₁, etc.). The HDA^MeCN values of closo-boranes are found to directly depend on the coordination number of the boron atom from which hydride detachment and stabilization of quasi-borinium cation takes place. In general, the larger the coordination number (CN) of a boron atom, the lower the value of HDA^MeCN.

Using electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry to explore formation and gas-phase chemistry of silver nanoclusters generated from the reaction of silver salts with NaBH4 in the presence of bis(diphenylarsino)methane

Electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) of mixtures of AgBF4 or AgNO3 with the capping ligand bis(diphenylarsino)methane ((Ph2 As)2 CH2 = dpam) in a solution of acetonitrile revealed the formation of the following cations: [Ag(CH3 CN)(dpam)]+ , [Ag(dpam)2 ]+ , [Ag2 (Cl)(dpam)2 ]+ , and [Ag3 (Cl)2 (dpam)3 ]+ . Addition of NaBH4 to these solutions results in the formation of the cluster cations [Ag2 (BH4 )(dpam)2 ]+ , [Ag2 (BH4 )(dpam)3 ]+ , [Ag3 (H)(BH4 )(dpam)3 ]+ , [Ag3 (BH4 )2 (dpam)3 ]+ , [Ag3 (H)(Cl)(dpam)3 ]+ , and [Ag3 (I)(BH4 )(dpam)3 ]+ , as established by ESI-MS. Use of NaBD4 confirmed that borohydride is the source of the hydride in these clusters. An Orbitrap Fusion LUMOS mass spectrometer was used to explore the gas-phase unimolecular chemistry of selected clusters via multistage mass spectrometry (MSn ) experiments employing low-energy collision-induced dissociation (CID) and high-energy collision-induced dissociation (HCD) experiments. The borohydride containing clusters fragment via two competing pathways: (i) ligand loss and (ii) B-H bond activation involving BH3 loss. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to calculate the energetics of the optimized structures for all precursor ions, fragment ions, and neutrals and to estimate the reaction endothermicities. Generally, there is reasonable agreement between the most abundant product ion formed and the predicted endothermicity of the associated reaction channel. The DFT calculations predicted that the novel dimer [Ag2 (BH4 )(dpam)2 ]+ has a paddlewheel structure in which the dpam and BH4 - ligands bridge both silver centers.

Steric and Electronic Effect of Cp-Substituents on the Structure of the Ruthenocene Based Pincer Palladium Borohydrides

Ruthenocene-based PCP^tBu pincer ligands were used to synthesize novel pincer palladium chloride Rc^F[PCP^tBu]PdCl (2a) and two novel palladium tetrahydroborates Rc^F[PCP^tBu]Pd(BH₄) (3a) and Rc^*[PCP^tBu]Pd(BH₄) (3b), where Rc^F[PCP^tBu] = κ³-{2,5-(tBu₂PCH₂)_2-C₅H₂}Ru(Cp^F) (Cp^F = C₅Me₄CF₃), and Rc*[PCP^tBu] = κ³-{2,5-(tBu₂PCH₂)₂C₅H₂}Ru(Cp*) (Cp* = C₅Me₅). These coordination compounds were characterized by X-ray, NMR and FTIR techniques. Analysis of the X-ray data shows that an increase of the steric bulk of non-metalated cyclopentadienyl ring in 3a and 3b relative to non-substituted Rc[PCP^tBu]Pd(BH₄) analogue (3c; where Rc[PCP^tBu] = κ³-{2,5-(tBu₂PCH₂)₂C₅H₂}Ru(Cp), Cp = C₅H₅) pushes palladium atom from the middle plane of the metalated Cp ring in the direction opposite to the ruthenium atom. This displacement increases in the order 3c < 3b < 3a following the order of the Cp-ring steric volume increase. The analysis of both X-ray and IR data suggests that BH₄ ligand in both palladium tetrahydroborates 3a and 3b has the mixed coordination mode η^1,2. The strength of the BH₄ bond with palladium atom increases in the order Rc[PCP^tBu]Pd(BH₄) < Rc*[PCP^tBu]Pd(BH₄) < Rc^F[PCP^tBu]Pd(BH₄) that appears to be affected by both steric and electronic properties of the ruthenocene moiety.

Borohydride-containing coordination polymers: synthesis, air stability and dehydrogenation

Control of the reactivity of hydride (H-) in crystal structures has been a challenge because of its strong electron-donating ability and reactivity with protic species. For metal borohydrides, the dehydrogenation activity and air stability are in a trade-off, and control of the reactivity of BH4 - has been demanded. For this purpose, we synthesize a series of BH4 --based coordination polymers/metal-organic frameworks. The reactivity of BH4 - in the structures is regulated by coordination geometry and neighboring ligands, and one of the compounds [Zn(BH4)2(dipyridylpropane)] exhibits both high dehydrogenation reactivity (1.4 wt% at 179 °C) and high air stability (50 RH% at 25 °C, 7 days). Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that H δ+···H δ- dihydrogen interactions and close packing of hydrophobic ligands are the key for the reactivity and stability. The dehydrogenation mechanism is investigated by temperature-programmed desorption, in situ synchrotron PXRD and solid-state NMR.

Synthesis, structural properties and reactivity of ruthenocene-based pincer Pd(ii) tetrahydroborate

Non-covalent interactions determine the structure, crystal packing and reactivity of isolated ruthenocene-based pincer Pd(ii) complexes. Bifurcate dihydrogen-bonded complexes are active intermediates of tetrahydroborate alcoholysis.

Terbocenium: completing a heavy lanthanide metallocenium cation family with an alternative anion abstraction strategy

A series of lanthanide metallocenium cations [Ln(Cp^ttt)₂]⁺ (Ln = Y, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu; Cp^ttt = C₅H₂^tBu₃-1,2,4) were recently prepared, but curiously the Tb analogue was elusive. Here we access [Tb(Cp^ttt)₂]⁺via an alternative strategy, completing the heavy [Ln(Cp^ttt)₂]⁺ family.

Mixed Allyl Rare-Earth Borohydride Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Application in (Co-)Polymerization Catalysis of Cyclic Esters

A series of new trivalent rare-earth allyl-borohydride complexes with the formula [RE(BH₄ )₂ (C₃ H₅ )(thf)_x ] (RE=Sc (1), x=2; RE=Y (2) and La (3), x=3) were synthesized by reaction of the corresponding rare-earth trisborohydrides [RE(BH₄ )₃ (thf)_x ] with half an equivalent of bis(allyl)magnesium. The complexes were fully characterized by determining their X-ray structure. Similar to their previously described Nd (4) and Sm (5) analogues, these complexes display a monomeric structure with two terminal trihapto BH₄ groups, one π-η³ allyl ligand, three THF molecules for complexes 2 and 3, and two THF molecules for complex 1. The catalytic behavior of complexes 1-5 toward the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of l-lactide (l-LA) and ϵ-caprolactone (ϵ-CL) was assessed. The Nd complex featured the best activity toward l-LA (turnover frequency (TOF)=1300 h^-1 ) and the order was Nd>La>Sm>Y>Sc. Complexes 1-3 were found very active for the ROP of ϵ-CL (TOF=166 000 h^-1 ), which is in line with the already established exceptionnally high performance of complexes 4 and 5. With both monomers, it was shown that the borohydride moiety was the preferentially initiating group, rather than the allyl one. The random copolymerization of l-LA and ϵ-CL was performed with complexes 1-5, in the absence or in the presence of benzyl alcohol as a chain-transfer agent, affording copolymers with ϵ-caprolactone up to 62 % inserted. The copolymers synthesized display a variety of microstructures, that is, blocky, random, or quasi-alternating.

Hydrogen and Dihydrogen Bonds in the Reactions of Metal Hydrides

The dihydrogen bond-an interaction between a transition-metal or main-group hydride (M-H) and a protic hydrogen moiety (H-X)-is arguably the most intriguing type of hydrogen bond. It was discovered in the mid-1990s and has been intensively explored since then. Herein, we collate up-to-date experimental and computational studies of the structural, energetic, and spectroscopic parameters and natures of dihydrogen-bonded complexes of the form M-H···H-X, as such species are now known for a wide variety of hydrido compounds. Being a weak interaction, dihydrogen bonding entails the lengthening of the participating bonds as well as their polarization (repolarization) as a result of electron density redistribution. Thus, the formation of a dihydrogen bond allows for the activation of both the MH and XH bonds in one step, facilitating proton transfer and preparing these bonds for further transformations. The implications of dihydrogen bonding in different stoichiometric and catalytic reactions, such as hydrogen exchange, alcoholysis and aminolysis, hydrogen evolution, hydrogenation, and dehydrogenation, are discussed.

Synthesis, structure and gas-phase reactivity of the mixed silver hydride borohydride nanocluster [Ag3(μ3-H)(μ3-BH4)L(Ph)3]BF4 (L(Ph) = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane)

Borohydrides react with silver salts to give products that span multiple scales ranging from discrete mononuclear compounds through to silver nanoparticles and colloids. The cluster cations [Ag3(H)(BH4)L3](+) are observed upon electrospray ionization mass spectrometry of solutions containing sodium borohydride, silver(I) tetrafluoroborate and bis(dimethylphosphino)methane (L(Me)) or bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (L(Ph)). By adding NaBH4 to an acetonitrile solution of AgBF4 and L(Ph), cooled to ca. -10 °C, we have been able to isolate the first mixed silver hydride borohydride nanocluster, [Ag3(μ3-H)(μ3-BH4)L(Ph)3]BF4, and structurally characterise it via X-ray crystallography. Combined gas-phase experiments (L(Me) and L(Ph)) and DFT calculations (L(Me)) reveal how loss of a ligand from the cationic complexes [Ag3(H)(BH4)L3](+) provides a change in geometry that facilitates subsequent loss of BH3 to produce the dihydride clusters, [Ag3(H)2Ln](+) (n = 1 and 2). Together with the results of previous studies (Girod et al., Chem. - Eur. J., 2014, 20, 16626), this provides a direct link between mixed silver hydride/borohydride nanoclusters, silver hydride nanoclusters, and silver nanoclusters.

Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Co(II) and Ni(II) PCP Pincer Borohydride Complexes

The 15e square-planar complexes [Co(PCPMe-iPr)Cl] (2a) and [Co(PCP-tBu)Cl] (2b), respectively, react readily with NaBH4 to afford complexes [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (4a) and [Co(PCP-tBu)(η2-BH4)] (4b) in high yields, as confirmed by IR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and elemental analysis. The borohydride ligand is symmetrically bound to the cobalt center in η2-fashion. These compounds are paramagnetic with effective magnetic moments of 2.0(1) and 2.1(1) μB consistent with a d7 low-spin system corresponding to one unpaired electron. None of these complexes reacted with CO2 to give formate complexes. For structural and reactivity comparisons, we prepared the analogous Ni(II) borohydride complex [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) via two different synthetic routes. One utilizes [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)Cl] (3) and NaBH4, the second one makes use of the hydride complex [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)H] (6) and BH3·THF. In both cases, 5 is obtained in high yields. In contrast to 4a and 4b, the borohydride ligand is asymmetrically bound to the nickel center but still in an η2-mode. [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) loses readily BH3 at elevated temperatures in the presence of NEt3 to form 6. Complexes 5 and 6 are both diamagnetic and were characterized by a combination of 1H, 13C{1H}, and 31P{1H} NMR, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Additionally, the structure of these compounds was established by X-ray crystallography. Complexes 5 and 6 react with CO2 to give the formate complex [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(OC(C=O)H] (7). The extrusion of BH3 from [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (4a) and [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) with the aid of NH3 to yield the respective hydride complexes [Co(PCPMe-iPr)H] and [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)H] (6) and BH3NH3 was investigated by DFT calculations showing that formation of the Ni hydride is thermodynamically favorable, whereas the formation of the Co(II) hydride, in agreement with the experiment, is unfavorable. The electronic structures and the bonding of the borohydride ligand in [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (4a) and [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) were established by DFT computations.

Dihydrogen bonding in complex (PP3)RuH(η(1)-BH4) featuring two proton-accepting hydride sites: experimental and theoretical studies

Combining variable-temperature infrared and NMR spectroscopic studies with quantum-chemical calculations (density functional theory (DFT) and natural bond orbital) allowed us to address the problem of competition between MH (M = transition metal) and BH hydrogens as proton-accepting sites in dihydrogen bond (DHB) and to unravel the mechanism of proton transfer to complex (PP3)RuH(η(1)-BH4) (1, PP3 = κ(4)-P(CH2CH2PPh2)3). Interaction of complex 1 with CH3OH, fluorinated alcohols of variable acid strength [CH2FCH2OH, CF3CH2OH, (CF3)2CHOH (HFIP), (CF3)3COH], and CF3COOH leads to the medium-strength DHB complexes involving BH bonds (3-5 kcal/mol), whereas DHB complexes with RuH were not observed experimentally. The two proton-transfer pathways were considered in DFT/M06 calculations. The first one goes via more favorable bifurcate complexes to BHterm and high activation barriers (38.2 and 28.4 kcal/mol in case of HFIP) and leads directly to the thermodynamic product [(PP3)RuHeq(H2)](+)[OR](-). The second pathway starts from the less-favorable complex with RuH ligand but shows a lower activation barrier (23.5 kcal/mol for HFIP) and eventually leads to the final product via the isomerization of intermediate [(PP3)RuHax(H2)](+)[OR](-). The B-Hbr bond breaking is the common key step of all pathways investigated.

Synthetic approaches to inorganic borohydrides

Inorganic borohydrides are actively studied in view of potential hydrogen storage applications. These compounds can be obtained by a variety of reactions ranging from high temperature reactions of the elements to exchange reactions in solution or in solid state. Different approaches will be discussed and compared.
