Reversing the size-dependence of surface plasmon resonances

Biogenic Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Mediated by Aronia melanocarpa and Their Biological Evaluation

In the present study, two A. melanocarpa berry extracts were used for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). After the optimization of synthesis, the AgNPs were characterized using UV-Vis, FTIR, EDX, DLS, and STEM analyses. The stability in different media, phytotoxicity, as well as antimicrobial and antioxidant activities were also evaluated. The ideal synthesis conditions were represented by a 3 mM AgNO3 concentration, 1:9 extract:AgNO3 volume ratio, alkaline medium, and stirring at 40 °C for 120 min. The synthesis was confirmed by the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak at 403 nm, and the strong signal at 3 keV from the EDX spectra. FTIR analysis indicated that polyphenols, polysaccharides, and amino acids could be the compounds responsible for synthesis. Stability tests and the negative zeta potential values showed that phytocompounds also play a role in the stabilization and capping of AgNPs. The preliminary phytotoxicity studies on T. aestivum showed that both the extracts and their corresponding AgNPs had an impact on the growth of roots and shoots as well as on the microscopic structure of leaves. The synthesized AgNPs presented antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, and C. albicans. Moreover, considering the results obtained in the lipoxygenase inhibition, the DPPH and hydroxyl scavenging activities, and the ferrous ion chelating assay, AgNPs exhibit promising antioxidant activity.

Sensitive, Stable, and Recyclable ZnO/Ag Nanohybrid Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Metrology

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering is a practical, noninvasive spectroscopic technique that measures chemical fingerprints for varieties of molecules in multiple applications. However, synthesizing appropriate substrates for practical, long-term applications of this method has always been a challenging task. In the present study, we show that ZnO/Ag nanohybrid substrates may act as highly stable, sensitive, and recyclable substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering, as illustrated by the detection of methylene blue, selected as a test dye molecule with self-cleaning functionalities. Specifically, we demonstrate the detection enhancement factor of 3.7 × 107 along with exceptional long-term stability explained in terms of the localized surface plasmon resonance from the Ag nanocrystals embedded into the chemically inert ZnO nanoparticles, constituting the nanohybrid. Significantly, these substrates can be efficiently cleaned and regenerated while maintaining their high performance upon recycling. As a result, using these substrates, up to 10-12 M detection sensitivity has been demonstrated, enabling the accuracy required in modern environmental monitoring, bioassays, and analytical chemistry. Thus, ZnO nanoparticles with embedded Ag nanocrystals constitute a novel class of advanced nanohybrid substrates for use in multiple applications of surface-enhanced Raman scattering metrology.

Synthesis of metallic high-entropy alloy nanoparticles

The theoretically infinite compositional space of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and their novel properties and applications have attracted significant attention from a broader research community. The successful synthesis of high-quality single-phase HEA nanoparticles represents a crucial step in fully unlocking the potential of this new class of materials to drive innovations. This review analyzes the various methods reported in the literature to identify their commonalities and dissimilarities, which allows categorizing these methods into five general strategies. Physical minimization of HEA metals into HEA nanoparticles through cryo-milling represents the typical top-down strategy. The counter bottom-up strategy requires the simultaneous generation and precipitation of metal atoms of different elements on growing nanoparticles. Depending on the metal atom generation process, there are four synthesis strategies: vaporization of metals, burst reduction of metal precursors, thermal shock-induced reduction of metal precursors, and solvothermal reduction of metal precursors. Comparisons among the methods within each strategy, along with discussions, provide insights and guidance for achieving the robust synthesis of HEA nanoparticles.

Extrinsic hydrophobicity-controlled silver nanoparticles as efficient and stable catalysts for CO2 electrolysis

To realize economically feasible electrochemical CO2 conversion, achieving a high partial current density for value-added products is particularly vital. However, acceleration of the hydrogen evolution reaction due to cathode flooding in a high-current-density region makes this challenging. Herein, we find that partially ligand-derived Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) could prevent electrolyte flooding while maintaining catalytic activity for CO2 electroreduction. This results in a high Faradaic efficiency for CO (>90%) and high partial current density (298.39 mA cm‒2), even under harsh stability test conditions (3.4 V). The suppressed splitting/detachment of Ag particles, due to the lipid ligand, enhance the uniform hydrophobicity retention of the Ag-NP electrode at high cathodic overpotentials and prevent flooding and current fluctuations. The mass transfer of gaseous CO2 is maintained in the catalytic region of several hundred nanometers, with the smooth formation of a triple phase boundary, which facilitate the occurrence of CO2RR instead of HER. We analyze catalyst degradation and cathode flooding during CO2 electrolysis through identical-location transmission electron microscopy and operando synchrotron-based X-ray computed tomography. This study develops an efficient strategy for designing active and durable electrocatalysts for CO2 electrolysis.

Comprehensive antifungal investigation of green synthesized silver nanoformulation against four agriculturally significant fungi and its cytotoxic applications

The present study reports the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in powder form using the leaf extract of Azadirachta indica. The synthesis of AgNPs was confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, FESEM, and EDX. The synthesized AgNPs were in a powdered state and dispersed completely in 5% polyethylene glycol (PEG) and demonstrated prolonged shelf life and enhanced bioavailability over a year without any aggregation. The resulting silver nanoformulation demonstrated complete inhibition against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Colletotrichum falcatum and 68% to 80% inhibition against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Rhizoctonia solani respectively, at 2000 ppm. The EC50 values determined through a statistical analysis were 66.42, 157.7, 19.06, and 33.30 ppm for S. sclerotiorum, C. falcatum, C. gloeosporioides, and R. solani respectively. The silver nanoformulation also established significant cytotoxicity, with a 74.96% inhibition rate against the human glioblastoma cell line U87MG at 250 ppm. The IC50 value for the cancerous cell lines was determined to be 56.87 ppm through statistical analysis. The proposed silver nanoformulation may be used as a next-generation fungicide in crop improvement and may also find application in anticancer investigations. To the best of our knowledge, this is also the first report of silver nanoformulation demonstrating complete inhibition against the economically significant phytopathogen C. falcatum.

Intrinsic Visible Plasmonic Properties of Colloidal PtIn2 Intermetallic Nanoparticles

Materials that intrinsically exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the visible region have been predominantly researched on nanoparticles (NPs) composed of coinage metals, namely Au, Ag, and Cu. Here, as a coinage metal-free intermetallic NPs, colloidal PtIn2 NPs with a C1 (CaF2 -type) crystal structure are synthesized by the liquid phase method, which evidently exhibit LSPR at wavelengths similar to face-centered cubic (fcc)-Au NPs. Computational simulations pointed out differences in the electronic structure and photo-excited electron dynamics between C1-PtIn2 and fcc-Au NPs; reduces interband transition and stronger screening with smaller number of bound d-electrons compare with fcc-Au are unique origins of the visible plasmonic nature of C1-PtIn2 NPs. These results strongly indicate that the intermetallic NPs are expected to address the development of alternative plasmonic materials by tuning their crystal structure and composition.

Improving Stability of CO2 Electroreduction by Incorporating Ag NPs in N-Doped Ordered Mesoporous Carbon Structures

The electroreduction of carbon dioxide (eCO2RR) to CO using Ag nanoparticles as an electrocatalyst is promising as an industrial carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technique to mitigate CO2 emissions. Nevertheless, the long-term stability of these Ag nanoparticles has been insufficient despite initial high Faradaic efficiencies and/or partial current densities. To improve the stability, we evaluated an up-scalable and easily tunable synthesis route to deposit low-weight percentages of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on and into the framework of a nitrogen-doped ordered mesoporous carbon (NOMC) structure. By exploiting this so-called nanoparticle confinement strategy, the nanoparticle mobility under operation is strongly reduced. As a result, particle detachment and agglomeration, two of the most pronounced electrocatalytic degradation mechanisms, are (partially) blocked and catalyst durability is improved. Several synthesis parameters, such as the anchoring agent, the weight percentage of Ag NPs, and the type of carbonaceous support material, were modified in a controlled manner to evaluate their respective impact on the overall electrochemical performance, with a strong emphasis on operational stability. The resulting powders were evaluated through electrochemical and physicochemical characterization methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2-physisorption, Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), STEM-EDS, electron tomography, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The optimized Ag/soft-NOMC catalysts showed both a promising selectivity (∼80%) and stability compared with commercial Ag NPs while decreasing the loading of the transition metal by more than 50%. The stability of both the 5 and 10 wt % Ag/soft-NOMC catalysts showed considerable improvements by anchoring the Ag NPs on and into a NOMC framework, resulting in a 267% improvement in CO selectivity after 72 h (despite initial losses) compared to commercial Ag NPs. These results demonstrate the promising strategy of anchoring Ag NPs to improve the CO selectivity during prolonged experiments due to the reduced mobility of the Ag NPs and thus enhanced stability.

Extracellular synthesis of silver nanoparticle using yeast extracts: antibacterial and seed priming applicationss

The evolution and rapid spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens have become a major concern for human health and demand the development of alternative antimicrobial agents to combat this emergent threat. Conventional intracellular methods for producing metal nanoparticles (NPs) using whole-cell microorganisms have limitations, including binding of NPs to cellular components, potential product loss, and environmental contamination. In contrast, this study introduces a green, extracellular, and sustainable methodology for the bio-materialization of silver NPs (AgNPs) using renewable resource cell-free yeast extract. These extracts serve as a sustainable, biogenic route for both reducing the metal precursor and stabilizing the surface of AgNPs. This method offers several advantages such as cost-effectiveness, environment-friendliness, ease of synthesis, and scalability. HR-TEM imaging of the biosynthesized AgNPs revealed an isotropic growth route, resulting in an average size of about ~ 18 nm and shapes ranging from spherical to oval. Further characterization by FTIR and XPS results revealed various functional groups, including carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amide contribute to enhanced colloidal stability. AgNPs exhibited potent antibacterial activity against tested MDR strains, showing particularly high efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria. These findings suggest their potential role in developing alternative treatments to address the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, seed priming experiments demonstrated that pre-sowing treatment with AgNPs improves both the germination rate and survival of Sorghum jowar and Zea mays seedlings. Phytoassisted synthesis of CuO and Ag-CuO nanocomposite, characterization, chemical sensing of ammonia, degradation of methylene blue

The elimination of hazardous industrial pollutants from aqueous solutions is an emerging area of scientific research and a worldwide problem. An efficient catalyst, Ag-CuO was synthesized for the degradation of methylene blue, the chemical sensing of ammonia. A simple novel synthetic method was reported in which new plant material Capparis decidua was used for the reduction and stabilization of the synthesized nanocatalyst. A Varying amount of Ag was doped into CuO to optimize the best catalyst that met the required objectives. Through this, the Ag-CuO nanocomposite was characterized by XRD, SEM, HR-TEM, EDX, and FTIR techniques. The mechanism of increased catalytic activity with Ag doping involves the formation of charge sink and suppression of drop back probability of charge from conduction to valance band. Herein, 2.7 mol % Ag-CuO exhibited better catalytic activities and it was used through subsequent catalytic experiments. The experimental conditions such as pH, catalyst dose, analyte initial concentration, and contact time were optimized. The as-synthesized nanocomposite demonstrates an excellent degradation efficacy of MB which is 97% at pH 9. More interestingly, the as-synthesized catalyst was successfully applied for the chemical sensing of ammonia even at very low concentrations. The lower limit of detection (LLOD) also called analytic sensitivity was calculated for ammonia sensing and found to be 1.37 ppm.

Protein Adsorption, Calcium-Binding Ability, and Biocompatibility of Silver Nanoparticle-Loaded Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Hydrogels Using Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Several approaches have evolved to facilitate the exploration of hydrogel systems in biomedical research. In this sense, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has been widely used in hydrogel (HG) fabrication for several therapeutic applications. The biological properties of PVA hydrogels (PVA-HGs) are highly dependent on their interaction with protein receptors and extracellular matrix (mainly calcium) deposition, for which there is not enough evidence from existing research yet. Thus, for the first time, the functional properties, like protein and mineral interactions, related to the proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) by silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-loaded PVA hydrogels (AgNPs-PVA-HGs) were investigated in the present study. The UV absorption spectrum and TEM microscopic results showed a maximum absorbance of synthesized AgNPs at 409 nm, with an average particle size of 14.5 ± 2.5 nm, respectively. The functional properties, such as the calcium-binding and the protein adsorption of PVA-HG, were accelerated by incorporating AgNPs; however, the swelling properties of the HGs were reduced by AgNPs, which might be due to the masking of the free functional groups (hydroxyl groups of PVA) by AgNPs. SEM images showed the presence of AgNPs with a more porous structure in the HGs. The proliferative effect of MSCs increased over culture time from day 1 to day 7, and the cell proliferative effect was upregulated by HGs with more pronounced AgNPs-PVA-HG. In addition, both HGs did not produce any significant cytotoxicity in the MSCs. The histological (bright light and H&E staining) and fluorescence microscopic images showed the presence of a cytoskeleton and the fibrillar structure of the MSCs, and the cells adhered more firmly to all HGs. More fibrillar bipolar and dense fibrillar structures were seen in the day 1 and day 7 cultures, respectively. Interestingly, the MSCs cultured on AgNPs-PVA-HG produced extracellular matrix deposition on day 7. Accordingly, the present results proved the biocompatibility of AgNPs-PVA-HG as a suitable system for culturing mammalian stem cells for regenerative tissue applications.

SERS Immunosensors for Cancer Markers Detection

Early diagnosis and monitoring are essential for the effective treatment and survival of patients with different types of malignancy. To this end, the accurate and sensitive determination of substances in human biological fluids related to cancer diagnosis and/or prognosis, i.e., cancer biomarkers, is of ultimate importance. Advancements in the field of immunodetection and nanomaterials have enabled the application of new transduction approaches for the sensitive detection of single or multiple cancer biomarkers in biological fluids. Immunosensors based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) are examples where the special properties of nanostructured materials and immunoreagents are combined to develop analytical tools that hold promise for point-of-care applications. In this frame, the subject of this review article is to present the advancements made so far regarding the immunochemical determination of cancer biomarkers by SERS. Thus, after a short introduction about the principles of both immunoassays and SERS, an extended presentation of up-to-date works regarding both single and multi-analyte determination of cancer biomarkers is presented. Finally, future perspectives on the field of SERS immunosensors for cancer markers detection are briefly discussed.

Photoinitiated Energy Transfer in Porous-Cage-Stabilised Silver Nanoparticles

We report a new composite material consisting of silver nanoparticles decorated with three-dimensional molecular organic cages based on light absorbing porphyrins. The porphyrin cages serve to both stabilize the particles and allow diffusion and trapping of small molecules close to the metallic surface. Combining these two photoactive components results in a Fano resonant interaction between the porphyrin Soret band and the nanoparticle localised surface plasmon resonance. Time resolved spectroscopy revealed the silver nanoparticles transfer up to 37% of their excited state energy to the stabilising layer of porphyrin cages. These unusual photophysics cause a 2-fold current increase in photoelectrochemical water splitting measurements. The composite structure provides a compelling proof-of-concept for advanced photosensitiser systems with intrinsic porosity for photocatalytic and sensing applications.

Improving NonViral Gene Delivery Using MHz Bursts of Nanosecond Pulses and Gold Nanoparticles for Electric Field Amplification

Gene delivery by the pulsed electric field is a promising alternative technology for nonviral transfection; however, the application of short pulses (i.e., nanosecond) is extremely limited. In this work, we aimed to show the capability to improve gene delivery using MHz frequency bursts of nanosecond pulses and characterize the potential use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs: 9, 13, 14, and 22 nm) in this context. We have used bursts of MHz pulses 3/5/7 kV/cm × 300 ns × 100 and compared the efficacy of the parametric protocols to conventional microsecond protocols (100 µs × 8, 1 Hz) separately and in combination with nanoparticles. Furthermore, the effects of pulses and AuNPs on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were analyzed. It was shown that gene delivery using microsecond protocols could be significantly improved with AuNPs; however, the efficacy is strongly dependent on the surface charge of AuNPs and their size. The capability of local field amplification using AuNPs was also confirmed by finite element method simulation. Finally, it was shown that AuNPs are not effective with nanosecond protocols. However, MHz protocols are still competitive in the context of gene delivery, resulting in low ROS generation, preserved viability, and easier procedure to trigger comparable efficacy.

Optical, structural and antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles and DNA-templated silver nanoclusters

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are increasingly considered for biomedical applications as drug-delivery carriers, imaging probes and antibacterial agents. Silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) represent another subclass of nanoscale silver. AgNCs are a promising tool for nanomedicine due to their small size, structural homogeneity, antibacterial activity and fluorescence, which arises from their molecule-like electron configurations. The template-assisted synthesis of AgNCs relies on organic molecules that act as polydentate ligands. In particular, single-stranded nucleic acids reproducibly scaffold AgNCs to provide fluorescent, biocompatible materials that are incorporable in other formulations. This mini review outlines the design and characterization of AgNPs and DNA-templated AgNCs, discusses factors that affect their physicochemical and biological properties, and highlights applications of these materials as antibacterial agents and biosensors.

Using inorganic nanoparticles to fight fungal infections in the antimicrobial resistant era

Fungal infections pose a serious threat to human health and livelihoods. The number and variety of clinically approved antifungal drugs is very limited, and the emergence and rapid spread of resistance to these drugs means the impact of fungal infections will increase in the future unless alternatives are found. Despite the significance and major challenges associated with fungal infections, this topic receives significantly less attention than bacterial infections. A major challenge in the development of fungi-specific drugs is that both fungi and mammalian cells are eukaryotic and have significant overlap in their cellular machinery. This lack of fungi-specific drug targets makes human cells vulnerable to toxic side effects from many antifungal agents. Furthermore, antifungal drug resistance necessitates higher doses of the drugs, leading to significant human toxicity. There is an urgent need for new antifungal agents, specifically those that can limit the emergence of new resistant species. Non-drug nanomaterials have primarily been explored as antibacterial agents in recent years; however, they are also a promising source of new antifungal candidates. Thus, this article reviews current research on the use of inorganic nanoparticles as antifungal agents. We also highlight challenges facing antifungal nanoparticles and discuss possible future research opportunities in this field. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Fungal infections pose a growing threat to human health and livelihood. The rapid spread of resistance to current antifungal drugs has led to an urgent need to develop alternative antifungals. Nanoparticles have many properties that could make them useful antimycotic agents. To the authors' knowledge, there is no published review so far that has comprehensively summarized the current development status of antifungal inorganic nanomaterials, so we decided to fill this gap. In this review, we discussed the state-of-the-art research on antifungal inorganic nanoparticles including metal, metal oxide, transition-metal dichalcogenides, and inorganic non-metallic particle systems. Future directions for the design of inorganic nanoparticles with higher antifungal efficacy and lower toxicity are described as a guide for further development in this important area.

Environmental formaldehyde sensing at room temperature by smartphone-assisted and wearable plasmonic nanohybrids

Formaldehyde is a toxic and carcinogenic indoor air pollutant. Promising for its routine detection are gas sensors based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Such sensors trace analytes by converting tiny changes in the local dielectric environment into easily readable, optical signals. Yet, this mechanism is inherently non-selective to volatile organic compounds (like formaldehyde) and yields rarely detection limits below parts-per-million concentrations. Here, we reveal that chemical reaction-mediated LSPR with nanohybrids of Ag/AgOx core-shell clusters on TiO2 enables highly selective formaldehyde sensing down to 5 parts-per-billion (ppb). Therein, AgOx is reduced by the formaldehyde to metallic Ag resulting in strong plasmonic signal changes, as measured by UV/Vis spectroscopy and confirmed by X-ray diffraction. This interaction is highly selective to formaldehyde over other aldehydes, alcohols, ketones, aromatic compounds (as confirmed by high-resolution mass spectrometry), inorganics, and quite robust to relative humidity changes. Since this sensor works at room temperature, such LSPR nanohybrids are directly deposited onto flexible wristbands to quantify formaldehyde between 40-500 ppb at 50% RH, even with a widely available smartphone camera (Pearson correlation coefficient r = 0.998). Such chemoresponsive coatings open new avenues for wearable devices in environmental, food, health and occupational safety applications, as demonstrated by an early field test in the pathology of a local hospital.

Synthesis and Characterization of Magnetoplasmonic Air-Stable Au@FeCo

The synthesis of FeCo alloys as highly magnetic nanoparticles has been valuable, as far as applications for magnetic nanoparticles are concerned. However, recently, a field of magnetoplasmonics in which magnetic nanoparticles such as the FeCo alloys doped with plasmonic materials such as Au and Ag to create a hybrid nanostructure with both properties has emerged. These magnetoplasmonic metamaterials have greatly enhanced the limit of detection of analytes in spectroscopic methods, as well as providing a more widely applicable nanoparticle to broaden the use of FeCo alloys even further. Herein, we discuss the synthesis of high-yield and fairly monodisperse spherical FeCo and Au-doped FeCo (Au@FeCo) with varying compositions of Au synthesized via the thermal decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)₅) and dicobalt octacarbonyl (Co₂(CO)₈), followed by the addition of Au atoms using triphenylphosphine gold(I) chloride ((Ph₃P)AuCl) via both coprecipitation and by delayed addition methods. The products were separated using a hand-held magnet, and then characterized via ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS), and magnetization measurements. Optical studies revealed a plasmonic peak at 550 nm in the Au@FeCo nanoparticles that had a gold content (%Au) of >2% (by weight), determined using F-AAS. Colocation of the Fe, Co, and Au were demonstrated through EDX analysis. Location of the Au atoms in the core were seen through high-resolution bright-field imaging. To understand the use of these nanoparticles for potential application in therapeutics and/or electronics, resistance measurements were performed to assess power loss as a function of frequency. We also achieved magnetization values as high as 150 emu/g and as low as 50 emu/g for gold-loaded samples based on %Au by weight. This paves the way to continue to develop magneto-plasmonic structures chemically using these synthesis strategies.

Novel insight on chemo-specific detection of toxic environmental chromium residues existing as recalcitrant Cr(III)-carboxyl complexes using plasmonic silver nanoplatform bi-functionalized with citrate and PVP

Chromium (Cr) is a toxic environmental pollutant that majorly exists in trivalent and hexavalent forms. Though Cr(VI) is more dangerous than Cr(III), the trivalent Cr forms complexes with environmentally-available organic molecules. This makes them potentially harmful and difficult to detect. In this study, we have designed an ultrasensitive plasmonic nanosensor using citrate and PVP functionalized Ag nanoparticles (Ag-citrate-PVPNPs) for the detection of trivalent chromium organic complexes such as Cr(III)-EDTA (Cr-E), Cr(III)-acetate (Cr-A), Cr(III)-citrate (Cr-C) and Cr(III)-tartrate (Cr-T). The nanoparticles (NPs) were structurally characterized by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, SAED, EDX and elemental mapping. The citrate and PVP molecules played a vital role in the detection mechanism and stability of the sensor. Upon detection, the yellow-colored Ag-citrate-PVP NPs turned into different shades of brown depending on the type of the Cr complex and concentration. It was accompanied by diminishing and/or shifting UV-Visible absorbance peaks due to the aggregation of Ag-citrate-PVP NPs. Further, a linear relationship was observed between absorbance reduction and analyte concentration. The selectivity tests showed that the sensor was non-functional to other metal ions and inorganic anions. The sensor was optimized using pH and temperature studies. The mechanism of detection was elucidated with the help of characterization techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, XPS and UV-visible spectrophotometer. The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 3.29, 4.87, 1.76 and 1.79 nM for Cr-E, Cr-A, Cr-C and Cr-T complexes respectively. This study provides a rapid and sensitive approach for the detection of multiple Cr(III)-organic complexes present in an aqueous solution.

Nanoparticle surface coatings produce distinct antibacterial effects that are consistent across diverse bacterial species

Nanoparticles have been proposed as tunable delivery vehicles for targeted treatments and, in some cases, the active therapeutic agents themselves. Despite the promise of such customizable impacts, little evidence exists to support these claims in the realm of antibiotics. Exploration of the silver and copper nanoparticle antibacterial impacts have been reported with inconsistent results. Here, we investigate the physical, chemical, and bacterial properties of silver and copper core particles stabilized with commonly used surface coatings, namely, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, to confer a neutrally charged surface), cetrimonium bromide (CTAB, positively charged surface), citrate (Cit, negatively charged surface for silver nanoparticles), and ascorbic acid (AA, negatively charged surface for copper nanoparticles. The impacts of these potential antibacterial nanoparticles are measured against three bacterial species spanning deep divisions in the bacterial tree of life and include Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Sphingobacterium multivorum. Varying dose, core composition, surface coating, and bacterial species revealed that nanoparticle surfaces accounted for most of the variation in antibacterial activity. In all experiments, dose produced a linear inhibitory effect. Surprisingly, bacterial species reacted similarly regardless of evolutionary relatedness. There is a high degree of consistency, effectiveness, and efficacy among PVP silver and copper nanoparticle. These findings have implications for the intentional use of nanotechnology in environmental systems.

A study on the role of plasmonic Ti3C2Tx MXene in enhancing photoredox catalysis

Engineering the spatial separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers has been one of the most enduring research topics in the field of photocatalysis due to its crucial role in determining the performances of photocatalysts. Herein, as a proof-of-concept, Ti₃C₂T_x MXene is coupled with a typical heterojunction of TiO₂@CdS through a co-assembly strategy to boost electron pumping towards improving the photocatalytic efficiency. In addition to the band alignment-mediated electron transfer in TiO₂@CdS-Ti₃C₂T_x heterojunctions, the plasmon-induced electric field enhancement of Ti₃C₂T_x is found to cooperate with the electron-reservoir role of Ti₃C₂T_x to extract photoinduced electrons. The synergistic dual functions of Ti₃C₂T_x promote multichannel electron transfer in TiO₂@CdS-Ti₃C₂T_x hybrids to improve the photocatalytic efficiency. These results intuitively show that there is a wide scope to manipulate the spatial separation and transfer of photoinduced electrons by cultivating the fertile ground of Ti₃C₂T_x toward boosting the efficiency of solar-to-chemical conversion.

Förster and nanometal surface-energy transfer in CsPbCl3/Yb3+ quantum-cutting multilayer structures

Recently, in nanophotonics, thin metal films owing to the plasmon modes they support and their perovskite nanostructures exhibit novel optical properties, which have attracted considerable interest. Both the Förster resonant energy transfer (FRET) of the dopant-induced right-angled Yb³⁺-V_Pb-Yb³⁺ defect state and a pair of Yb³⁺ ions in all-inorganic perovskite nanocrystal (PeNC) CsPbCl₃:Yb³⁺ quantum-cutting (QC) materials and the nanometal surface-energy transfer (NSET) of the excitons of PeNC-Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated experimentally in CsPbCl₃:Yb³⁺/PMMA/Ag/Si (CYA_ii = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), CsPbCl₃:Yb³⁺/PMMA/Si (CY_i), and CsPbCl₃/PMMA/Ag/Si (CA_i), representing three species of multilayer structures. It was found that due to the mediation of the Ag film and an increase in the interaction volume of donors-acceptors, FRET efficiencies increased from 26% to 66% as the spacer (or wave-guiding layer) thicknesses decreased from 63.7 to 17.8 nm. The energy-transfer efficiencies of CA_i in the NSET in the surface-surface scheme followed a d^-1.6-distance dependence. This distance dependence approached the d^-2-distance dependence expected of a point-to-surface or 0D-2D energy transfer (ET). The ET in quantum cutting (QC) modulated by plasmons undoubtedly paves a way for improving the FRET and NSET performances of materials.

Allium sativum@AgNPs and Phyllanthus urinaria@AgNPs: a comparative analysis for antibacterial application

Although medicinal herbs contain many biologically active ingredients that can act as antibiotic agents, most of them are difficult to dissolve in lipids and absorb through biofilms in the gastrointestinal tract. Besides, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used as a potential antibacterial agent, however, to achieve a bactericidal effect, high concentrations are required. In this work, AgNPs were combined into plant-based antibiotic nanoemulsions using biocompatible alginate/carboxyl methylcellulose scaffolds. The silver nanoparticles were prepared by a green method with an aqueous extract of Allium sativum or Phyllanthus urinaria extract. The botanical antibiotic components in the alcoholic extract of these plants were encapsulated with emulsifier poloxamer 407 to reduce the particle size, and make the active ingredients both water-soluble and lipid-soluble. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis showed that the prepared nanosystems were spherical with a size of about 20 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the interaction of the extracts and the alginate/carboxyl methylcellulose carrier. In vitro drug release kinetics of allicin and phyllanthin from the nanosystems exhibited a retarded release under different biological pH conditions. The antimicrobial activity of the synthesized nanoformulations were tested against Escherichia coli. The results showed that the nanosystem based on Allium sativum possesses a significantly higher antimicrobial activity against the tested organisms. Therefore, the combination of AgNPs with active compounds from Allium sativum extract is a good candidate for in vivo infection treatment application.

Bacterial infection microenvironment-responsive porous microspheres by microfluidics for promoting anti-infective therapy

The overuse of antibiotics for treating bacterial infection has caused severe bacterial resistance and become a public health threat worldwide. It is desired to develop novel antibiotic delivery systems as efficient antibacterial strategies for promoting anti-infective therapy. Herein, the AgNPs-loaded N-[(2-hydroxy-3-trimethyl ammonium) propyl] chitosan (HTCC)/hyaluronic acid (HA) porous microspheres (HHPMs) by microfluidics have been developed as novel bacterial infection microenvironment (IME)-responsive antibiotic delivery systems for promoting antimicrobial therapy. The release of AgNPs can respond explicitly to the IME with acidic pH values and relatively high hyaluronidase concentration. The unique porous structures of HHPMs can effectively facilitate the capture and enrichment of bacteria, thus exerting synergistic antibacterial effects, which can be more efficient in instant bacteria inhibiting and killing. The excellent biocompatibility of HHPMs is revealed by investigating their hemolytic activity and cytotoxicity. In vivo assays demonstrate that the fabricated AgNPs-loaded HHPMs can effectively resist bacterial infection and promote wound healing and tissue regeneration at infected wound sites by inhibition of the bacterial survival. This work indicates that fabricated HHPMs are ideal bacterial infection microenvironment-responsive materials for antibiotic delivery and show great promises for promoting anti-infective therapy in clinics.

Diffusive Formation of Au/Ag Alloy Nanoparticles of Governed Composition in Glass

For the first time we show that the introduction of silver ions in the glass containing gold nanoparticles (NPs) and additional heat treatment of the glass in the air lead to the formation of Au/Ag alloy NPs. The proposed approach makes it possible to position localized surface plasmon resonance of the NPs by selecting the heat treatment temperature, which determines the silver proportion in the alloy NPs. This allows for expanding customizability of NPs for applications in surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy, catalysis and biochemistry. Developed technique benefits from the presence of silver in the glass in ionic form, which prevents the oxidation of silver and provides stable preparation of Au/Ag alloy NPs.

AgCu NP Formation by the Ag NP Catalysis of Cu Ions at Room Temperature and Their Antibacterial Efficacy: A Kinetic Study

Although a facile route to prepare AgCu nanoalloys (NAs) with enhanced antibacterial efficacy using Ag NP catalysis of Cu ions at elevated temperatures was previously developed, its detailed reaction process is still unclear due to the fast reaction process at higher temperatures. This work found that AgCu NAs can also be synthesized by the same process but at room temperature. AgCu NAs formation kinetics have been studied using UV-Visible spectra and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), where formation includes Cu²⁺ deposition onto the Ag NP surface and Ag⁺ release, reduction, and agglomeration to form new Ag NPs; this is followed by a redistribution of the NA components and coalescence to form larger AgCu NPs. It is found that SPR absorption is linear with time early in the reaction, as expected for both pseudo-first-order (PFO) and pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics; neither model is followed subsequently due to contributions from newly formed Ag NPs and AgCu NAs. The antibacterial efficacy of the AgCu NAs thus formed was estimated, with a continuous increase over the whole alloying process, demonstrating the correlation of antibacterial efficacy with the extent of AgCu NA formation and Ag⁺ release.

Medium dependent optical response in ultra-fine plasmonic nanoparticles

We study the influence of media on the interaction of ultra-fine plasmonic nanoparticles (≤ 8 nm) with radiation. The important role of the surface layer of the nanoparticles, with properties that differ from the ones in the inner part, is established. Using an atomistic representation of the nanoparticle material and its interaction with light, we find a highly inhomogeneous distribution of the electric field inside and around the particles. It is predicted that with an increase in the refractive index of the ambient medium, the extension of the surface layer of atoms increases, something that also is accompanied by an enhanced red shift of the plasmon resonance band compared to large particles in which the influence of this layer and its relative volume is reduced. It is shown that the physical origin for the formation of a surface layer of atoms near the nanoparticle boundary is related to the anisotropy of the local environment of atoms in this layer which changes the conditions for the interaction of neighboring atoms with each other and with the incident radiation. It is shown that a growth of the refractive index of the ambient medium results in an increase in the local field in the dielectric cavity in which a plasmonic nanoparticle is embedded and which is accompanied by a growth of the amplitude of the plasmon resonance. We predict that in the ultra-fine regime the refractive index sensitivity shows a decreasing trend with respect to size which is opposite to that for larger particles. With the applied atomistic model this work demonstrates close relations between field distributions and properties of ultra-fine nanoparticles.

Controlled Synthesis of Platinum and Silver Nanoparticles Using Multivalent Ligands

Here, the controlled formation of platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using amine-functionalized multivalent ligands are reported. The effects of reaction temperature and ligand multivalency on the growth kinetics, size, and shape of PtNPs and AgNPs were systematically studied by performing a stepwise and a one-step process. PtNPs and AgNPs were prepared in the presence of amine ligands using platinum (II) acetylacetonate and silver (I) acetylacetonate, respectively. The effects of ligands and temperature on the formation of PtNPs were studied using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). For the characterization of AgNPs, additionally, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption was employed. The TEM measurements revealed that PtNPs prepared at different temperatures (160–200 °C, in a stepwise process) are monodispersed and of spherical shape regardless of the ligand multivalency or reaction temperature. In the preparation of PtNPs by the one-step process, ligands affect the shape of the PtNPs, which can be explained by the affinity of the ligands. The TEM and UV-Vis absorption studies on the formation of AgNPs with mono-, di-, and trivalent ligands showed narrower size distributions, while increasing the temperature from 80 °C to 120 °C and with a trivalent ligand in a one-step process.

Recycling of Solvent Allows for Multiple Rounds of Reproducible Nanoparticle Synthesis

Metal nanoparticles have superior properties for a variety of applications. In many cases, the improved performance of metal nanoparticles is tightly correlated with their size and atomic composition. To date, colloidal synthesis is the most commonly used technique to produce metal nanoparticles. However, colloidal synthesis is currently a laboratory scale technique that has not been applied at larger scales. One of the greatest challenges facing large-scale colloidal synthesis of metal nanoparticles is the large volume of long-chain hydrocarbon solvents and surfactants needed for the synthesis, which can dominate the cost of nanoparticle production. In this work, we demonstrate a protocol, based on solvent distillation, which enables the reuse of colloidal nanoparticle synthesis surfactants and solvents for over 10 rounds of successive syntheses and demonstrates that pure solvents and surfactants are not necessarily needed to produce uniform nanocrystals. We show that this protocol can be applied to the production of a wide variety of mono- and bimetallic nanoparticles with reproducible sizes and compositions, which leads to reproducible performance as heterogeneous catalysts. A techno-economic assessment demonstrates the potential of this technique to greatly reduce the solvent-related costs of colloidal metal nanoparticle synthesis, which could contribute to its wider application at commercial scale.

Photothermal Therapy with HER2-Targeted Silver Nanoparticles Leading to Cancer Remission

Nanoparticles exhibiting the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon are promising tools for diagnostics and cancer treatment. Among widely used metal nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) possess the strongest light scattering and surface plasmon strength. However, the therapeutic potential of Ag NPs has until now been underestimated. Here we show targeted photothermal therapy of solid tumors with 35 nm HER2-targeted Ag NPs, which were produced by the green synthesis using an aqueous extract of Lavandula angustifolia Mill. Light irradiation tests demonstrated effective hyperthermic properties of these NPs, namely heating by 10 °C in 10 min. To mediate targeted cancer therapy, Ag NPs were conjugated to the scaffold polypeptide, affibody ZHER2:342, which recognizes a clinically relevant oncomarker HER2. The conjugation was mediated by the PEG linker to obtain Ag-PEG-HER2 nanoparticles. Flow cytometry tests showed that Ag-PEG-HER2 particles successfully bind to HER2-overexpressing cells with a specificity comparable to that of full-size anti-HER2 IgGs. A confocal microscopy study showed efficient internalization of Ag-PEG-HER2 into cells in less than 2 h of incubation. Cytotoxicity assays demonstrated effective cell death upon exposure to Ag-PEG-HER2 and irradiation, caused by the production of reactive oxygen species. Xenograft tumor therapy with Ag-PEG-HER2 particles in vivo resulted in full primary tumor regression and the prevention of metastatic spread. Thus, for the first time, we have shown that HER2-directed plasmonic Ag nanoparticles are effective sensitizers for targeted photothermal oncotherapy.

Phyto-mediated synthesis of nanoparticles and their applications on hydrogen generation on NaBH4, biological activities and photodegradation on azo dyes: Development of machine learning model

This work reports the synthesis of the silver-platinum bimetallic nanoparticles (N@Pt-Ag BNPs) reduced by an ethanolic extract of black seed (Nigella sativa, N) using the green synthesis method, these nanoparticles show a great antibacterial, anticancer, and catalytic activity. The characterization of physicochemical properties of Ag-Pt BNP was carried out using UV-visible spectroscopy (Uv-vis), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis. The structural morphology shows that the N@Pt-Ag BNPs are spherical particles with a diameter of 5.6 nm. The cytotoxic effects of N@Pt-Ag BNPs were examined by MTT test in human breast cancer, human colon cancer, human pancreatic cancer, L929-Murine fibroblast cells. N@Pt-Ag BNPs have been observed to be much more effective in breast cancer cell lines. The cytotoxic effect of N@Pt-Ag BNPs against healthy L929-murine fibroblast cell lines was not observed. Also, high antibacterial activity on each of the bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli), Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis), Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), where we note that most strains of E. coli and S. aureus were damaged with a 73% percentage, 67% bacterial inhibition respectively. The results of the catalytic activities of N@Pt-Ag BNPs were obtained by performing the hydrolysis experiments of sodium borohydride (NaBH₄). According to the results obtained, TOF, enthalpy, entropy, and activation energy, values were found to be 2497.14 h^-1, 13.52 kJ/mol, -137.47 J/mol.K, 16.02 kJ/mol, respectively. N@Pt-Ag BNPs were found to be highly effective catalysts for hydrogen production which this was also confirmed by the machine learning model. The photocatalytic activity of N@Pt-Ag BNPs was tested against methylene blue (MB) dye and the highest activity was found as 80%.

Synthesis of Silver Nanocomposites for Stereolithography: In Situ Formation of Nanoparticles

Additive Manufacturing (AM) offers remarkable advantages in relation to traditional methods used to obtain solid structures, such as the capability to obtain customized complex geometries adapted to individual requirements. The design of novel nanocomposites suitable for AM is an excellent strategy to widen the application field of these techniques. In this work, we report on the fabrication of metal/polymer nanocomposites with enhanced optical/electrical behaviour for stereolithography (SLA). In particular, we analyse the in situ generation of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) from Ag precursors (AgNO3 and AgClO4) within acrylic resins via SLA. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis confirmed the formation of Ag NPs smaller than 5 nm in all nanocomposites, providing optical activity to the materials. A high density of Ag NPs with a good distribution through the material for the larger concentration of AgClO4 precursor tested was observed, in contrast to the isolated agglomerations found when the precursor amount was reduced to 0.1%. A significant reduction in the electrical resistivity up to four orders of magnitude was found for this material compared to the unfilled resin. However, consumption of part of the photoinitiator in the formation process of the Ag NPs contributed to a reduction in the polymerization degree of the resin and, consequently, degraded the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. Experiments with longer curing times showed that, for the higher AgClO4 concentrations tested, post-curing times of 300 min allowed an 80% degree of polymerization to be achieved. These conditions turned these materials into promising candidates to obtain solid structures with multifunctional properties.

Tailoring noble metal nanoparticle designs to enable sensitive lateral flow immunoassay

Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as signal reporters is a popular point-of-care diagnostic technique. However, given the weak absorbance of traditional 20-40 nm spherical AuNPs, their sensitivity is low, which greatly limits the wide application of AuNP-based LFIA. With the rapid advances in materials science and nanotechnology, the synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) has enhanced physicochemical properties such as optical, plasmonic, catalytic, and multifunctional activity by simply engineering their physical parameters, including the size, shape, composition, and external structure. Using these engineered NMNPs as an alternative to traditional AuNPs, the sensitivity of LFIA has been significantly improved, thereby greatly expanding the working range and application scenarios of LFIA, particularly in trace analysis. Therefore, in this review, we will focus on the design of engineered NMNPs and their demonstration in improving LFIA. We highlight the strategies available for tailoring NMNP designs, the effect of NMNP engineering on their performance, and the working principle of each engineering design for enhancing LFIA. Finally, current challenges and future improvements in this field are briefly discussed.

Experimental evolution of Pseudomonas putida under silver ion versus nanoparticle stress

Whether the antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are simply due to the release of silver ions (Ag⁺ ) or, additionally, nanoparticle-specific effects, is not clear. We used experimental evolution of the model environmental bacterium Pseudomonas putida to ask whether bacteria respond differently to Ag⁺ or AgNP treatment. We pre-evolved five cultures of strain KT2440 for 70 days without Ag to reduce confounding adaptations before dividing the fittest pre-evolved culture into five cultures each, evolving in the presence of low concentrations of Ag⁺ , well-defined AgNPs or Ag-free controls for a further 75 days. The mutations in the Ag⁺ or AgNP evolved populations displayed different patterns that were statistically significant. The non-synonymous mutations in AgNP-treated populations were mostly associated with cell surface proteins, including cytoskeletal membrane protein (FtsZ), membrane sensor and regulator (EnvZ and GacS) and periplasmic protein (PP_2758). In contrast, Ag⁺ treatment was selected for mutations linked to cytoplasmic proteins, including metal ion transporter (TauB) and those with metal-binding domains (ThiL and PP_2397). These results suggest the existence of AgNP-specific effects, either caused by sustained delivery of Ag⁺ from AgNP dissolution, more proximate delivery from cell-surface bound AgNPs, or by direct AgNP action on the cell's outer membrane.

Size-tunable synthesis of iron oxide nanocrystals by continuous seed-mediated growth: role of alkylamine species in the stepwise thermal decomposition of iron(II) oxalate

The properties of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) are governed by their size. Therefore, tuning the size of NPs is a fundamental technique in nanoscience. However, the size-tunable synthesis of inorganic NPs is generally carried out in a dilute solution, which produces large quantities of waste. Herein, we report the predictable size-tunable synthesis of Fe₃O₄ NPs by the stepwise thermal decomposition of iron(II) oxalate (Fe(ox)). Monodisperse Fe₃O₄ seed crystals were synthesized by the thermal decomposition of oleylamine-coordinated iron oxalate (Fe(ox)-OAm) in a small amount of oleylamine, followed by continuous seed-mediated growth of Fe₃O₄ NPs. The thermal decomposition behavior of Fe(ox) in oleylamine with and without N,N-diethyl-1,3-diaminopropane (dedap) revealed the important role of dedap in the stepwise thermal decomposition of Fe(ox). The size of the Fe₃O₄ NPs was easily tuned via the stepwise thermal decomposition of Fe(ox) by controlling the amount of decomposed Fe(ox) in a small amount of an alkylamine mixture. The particle diameter was predicted from the size of the Fe₃O₄ seed crystals and the amount of decomposed Fe(ox). Finally, the size dependency of magnetic properties of the synthesized Fe₃O₄ NPs was studied. This continuous seed-mediated growth method based on the stepwise thermal decomposition of metal oxalate can be applied to control the size of a variety of metal and metal oxide NPs.

Comparative assessment of the fate and toxicity of chemically and biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles to juvenile clams

Nanoparticles (NPs) can be produced via physical, chemical, or biological approaches. Yet, the impact of the synthesis approaches on the environmental fate and effects of NPs is poorly understood. Here, we synthesized AgNPs through chemical and biological approaches (cit-AgNPs and bio-AgNPs), characterized their properties, and toxicities relative to commercially available Ag nanopowder (np-AgNPs) to the clam Mercenaria mercenaria. The chemical synthesis is based on the reduction of ionic silver using sodium borohydride as a reducing agent and trisodium citrate as a capping agent. The biological synthesis is based on the reduction of ionic silver using biomolecules extracted from an atoxigenic strain of a filamentous fungus Aspergillus parasiticus. The properties of AgNPs were determined using UV-vis, dynamic light scattering, laser Doppler electrophoresis, (single particle)-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and asymmetric flow-field flow fractionation. Both chemical and biological synthesis approaches generated spherical AgNPs. The chemical synthesis produced AgNPs with narrower size distributions than those generated through biological synthesis. The polydispersity of bio-AgNPs decreased with increases in cell free extract (CFE):Ag ratios. The magnitude of the zeta potential of the cit-AgNPs was higher than those of bio-AgNPs. All AgNPs formed aggregates in the test media i.e., natural seawater. Based on the same total Ag concentrations, all AgNPs were less toxic than AgNO₃. The toxicity of AgNPs toward the juvenile clam, Mercenaria mercenaria, decreased following the order np-AgNPs > cit-AgNPs > bio-AgNPs. Expressed as a function of dissolved Ag concentrations, the toxicity of Ag decreased following the order cit-AgNPs > bio-AgNPs > AgNO₃ ~ np-AgNPs. Therefore, the toxicity of AgNP suspensions can be attributed to a combined effect of dissolved and particulate Ag forms. These results indicate that AgNP synthesis methods determine their environmental and biological behaviors and should be considered for a more comprehensive environmental risk assessment of AgNPs.

Alpha-ketoglutarate decorated iron oxide-gold core-shell nanoparticles for active mitochondrial targeting and radiosensitization enhancement in hepatocellular carcinoma

The ability of some tumours to impart radioresistance serves as a barrier in the cancer therapeutics. Mitochondrial metabolism significantly persuades this cancer cell survival, incursion and plays a crucial role in conferring radioresistance. It would be of great importance to target the active mitochondria to overcome this resistance and achieve tumoricidal efficacy. The current report investigates the improved radiosensitization effect (under Gamma irradiation) in hepatocellular carcinoma through active mitochondrial targeting of alpha-ketoglutarate decorated iron oxide-gold core-shell nanoparticles (GNP). The loading of a chemotherapeutic drug N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)retinamide in GNP allows adjuvant chemotherapy, which further sensitizes cancerous cells for radiotherapy. The GNP shows a drug loading efficiency of 8.5 wt% with a sustained drug release kinetics. The X-Ray diffraction (XRD) pattern and High-Resolution Transmission Electron microscopy (HRTEM) indicates the synthesis of core iron oxide nanoparticles with indications of a thin layer of gold shell on the surface with 1:7 ratios of Fe: Au. The GNP application significantly reduced per cent cell viability in Hepatocellular carcinoma cells through improved radiosensitization at 5 Gy gamma radiation dose. The molecular mechanism revealed a sharp increment in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and DNA fragmentation. The mitochondrial targeting probes confirm the presence of GNP in the mitochondria, which could be the possible reason for such improved cellular damage. In addition to the active mitochondrial targeting, the currently fabricated nanoparticles work as a potent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)/Computed Tomography (CT) contrast agent. This multifunctional therapeutic potential makes GNP as one of the most promising theragnostic molecules in cancer therapeutics.

In vitro coronal protein signatures and biological impact of silver nanoparticles synthesized with different natural polymers as capping agents

Biopolymer-capped particles, sodium alginate-, gelatin- and reconstituted silk fibroin-capped nanosilver (AgNPs), were synthesized with an intention to study, simultaneously, their in vitro and in vivo haemocompatibility, one of the major safety factors in biomedical applications. Solid state characterization showed formation of spherical nanoparticles with 5 to 30 nm primary sizes (transmission electron microscopy) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of particles confirmed silver bonding with the biopolymer moieties. The degree of aggregation of the biopolymer-capped AgNPs in the synthesis medium (ultrapure water) is relatively low, with comparable hydrodynamic size with those of the control citrate-stabilized NPs, and remained relatively unchanged even after 6 weeks. The polymer-capped nanoparticles showed different degrees of aggregation in biologically relevant media - PBS (pH 7.4) and 2% human blood plasma - with citrate- (control) and alginate-capped particles showing the highest aggregation, while gelatin- and silk fibroin-capped particles revealed better stability and less aggregation in these media. In vitro cytotoxicity studies revealed that the polymer-capped particles exhibited both concentration and (hydrodynamic) size-dependent haemolytic activity, the extent of which was higher (up to 100% in some cases) in collected whole blood samples of healthy human volunteers when compared to that in the washed erythrocytes. This difference is thought to result from the detected protein corona formation on the nanoparticle surface in the whole blood system, which was associated with reduced particle aggregation, causing more severe cytotoxic effects. At the tested particle concentration range in vitro, we observed a negligible haemolysis effect in vivo (Balb/c mice). Polymer-capped particles did accumulate in organs, with the highest levels detected in the liver (up to 422 μg per g tissue), yet no adverse behavioural effects were observed in the mice during the duration of the nanoparticle exposure.

Size- and composition-controlled intermetallic nanocrystals via amalgamation seeded growth

Intermetallic nanocrystals are a large family of emerging materials with extensive applications in many fields. Yet, a generalized synthetic method for intermetallic nanocrystals is lacking. Here, we report the development of a colloidal synthesis method based on amalgamation of monometallic nanocrystal seeds with low-melting point metals. We use this approach to achieve crystalline and compositionally uniform intermetallic nanocrystals of Au-Ga, Ag-Ga, Cu-Ga, Ni-Ga, Pd-Ga, Pd-In, and Pd-Zn compounds. We demonstrate both compositional tunability across the phase spaces (e.g., AuGa2, AuGa, Au7Ga2, and Ga-doped Au), size tunability (e.g., 14.0-, 7.6-, and 3.8-nm AuGa2), and size uniformity (e.g., 5.4% size deviations). This approach makes it possible to systematically achieve size- and composition-controlled intermetallic nanocrystals, opening up a multitude of possibilities for these materials.

Surfactant-guided spatial assembly of nano-architectures for molecular profiling of extracellular vesicles

The controlled assembly of nanomaterials into desired architectures presents many opportunities; however, current preparations lack spatial precision and versatility in developing complex nano-architectures. Inspired by the amphiphilic nature of surfactants, we develop a facile approach to guide nanomaterial integration – spatial organization and distribution – in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Named surfactant tunable spatial architecture (STAR), the technology leverages the varied interactions of surfactants with nanoparticles and MOF constituents, respectively, to direct nanoparticle arrangement while molding the growing framework. By surfactant matching, the approach achieves not only tunable and precise integration of diverse nanomaterials in different MOF structures, but also fast and aqueous synthesis, in solution and on solid substrates. Employing the approach, we develop a dual-probe STAR that comprises peripheral working probes and central reference probes to achieve differential responsiveness to biomarkers. When applied for the direct profiling of clinical ascites, STAR reveals glycosylation signatures of extracellular vesicles and differentiates cancer patient prognosis.

The Synergistic Effect of Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles and Phage ZCSE2 as a Novel Approach to Combat Multidrug-Resistant Salmonella enterica

The emergence and evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is considered a public health concern. Salmonella is one of the most common pathogens that cause high mortality and morbidity rates in humans, animals, and poultry annually. In this work, we developed a combination of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with bacteriophage (phage) as an antimicrobial agent to control microbial growth. The synthesized AgNPs with propolis were characterized by testing their color change from transparent to deep brown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The phage ZCSE2 was found to be stable when combined with AgNPs. Both minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were evaluated for AgNPs, phage, and their combination. The results indicated that MIC and MBC values were equal to 23 µg/mL against Salmonella bacteria at a concentration of 107 CFU/mL. The combination of 0.4× MIC from AgNPs and phage with Multiplicity of Infection (MOI) 0.1 showed an inhibitory effect. This combination of AgNPs and phage offers a prospect of nanoparticles with significantly enhanced antibacterial properties and therapeutic performance.

Tunable Size Dependence of Quantum Plasmon of Charged Gold Nanoparticles

The quantum behavior of surface plasmons has received extensive attention, benefiting from the development of exquisite nanotechnology and the diverse applications. Blueshift, redshift, and nonshift of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) have all been reported as the particle size decreases and enters the quantum size regime, but the underlying physical mechanism to induce these controversial size dependences is not clear. Herein, we propose an improved semiclassical model for modifying the dielectric function of metal nanospheres by combining the intrinsic quantized electron transitions and surface electron injection or extraction to investigate the plasmon shift and LSPR size dependence of the charged Au nanoparticles. We experimentally observe that the nonmonotonic blueshift of LSPRs with size for Au nanoparticles is turned into an approximately monotonic blueshift by increasing the electron donor concentration in the reduction solution, and it can also be transformed to an approximately monotonic redshift after surface passivation by ligand molecules. Moreover, we demonstrate controlled blueshift and redshift for the electron and hole plasmons in Cu_{2-x}S@Au core-shell nanoparticles by injecting electrons. The experimental observations and the theoretical calculations clarify the controversial size dependences of LSPR reported in the literature, reveal the critical role of surface electron injection or extraction in the transformation between the different size dependences of LSPRs, and are helpful for understanding the nature of surface plasmons in the quantum size regime.
