Abstract
Multi-responsive nanomembranes are a new class of advanced materials that can be harnessed in complex architectures for micro and nano-manipulators, artificial muscles, energy harvesting, soft robotics, and sensors. The design and fabrication of responsive membranes must meet such challenges as trade-offs between responsiveness and mechanical durability, volumetric low-cost production ensuring low environmental impact, and compatibility with standard technologies or biological systems This work demonstrates the fabrication of multi-responsive, mechanically robust poly(1,3-diaminopropane) (pDAP) nanomembranes and their application in fast photoactuators. The pDAP films are developed using a plasma-assisted polymerization technique that offers large-scale production and versatility of potential industrial relevance. The pDAP layers exhibit high elasticity with the Young's modulus of ≈7 GPa and remarkable mechanical durability across 20-80 °C temperatures. Notably, pDAP membranes reveal immediate and reversible contraction triggered by light, rising temperature, or reducing relative humidity underpinned by a reversible water sorption mechanism. These features enable the fabrication of photoactuators composed of pDAP-coated Si nanocantilevers, demonstrating ms timescale response to light, tens of µm deflections, and robust performance up to kHz frequencies. These results advance fundamental research on multi-responsive nanomembranes and hold the potential to boost versatile applications in light-to-motion conversion and sensing toward the industrial level.

Abstract
The escalating global demand for sustainable manufacturing, motivated by concerns over energy conservation and carbon footprints, encounters challenges due to insufficient renewable materials and arduous fabrication procedures to fulfill specific requirements in medical and healthcare systems. Here, biosafe pollen cryogel is engineered as effective hemostats without additional harmful crosslinkers to treat deep noncompressible wounds. A straightforward and low-energy approach is involved in forming stable macroporous cryogel, benefiting from the unique micro-hierarchical structures and chemical components of non-allergenic plant pollen. It is demonstrated that the pollen cryogel exhibits rapid water/blood-triggered shape-memory properties within 2 s. Owing to their inherent nano/micro hierarchical structure and abundant chemical functional groups on the pollen surface, the pollen cryogel shows effective hemostatic performance in a mouse liver penetration model, which is easily removed after usage. Overall, the self-crosslinking pollen cryogel in this work pioneers a framework of potential clinical applications for the first-hand treatment on deep noncompressible wounds.

Abstract
Bioinspired soft actuators, capable of undergoing shape deformation in response to external triggers, hold great potential in fields such as soft robotics, artificial muscles, drug delivery, and smart switches. However, their widespread application is hindered by limitations in responsiveness, durability, and complex fabrication processes. In this study, we propose a new approach to tackle these challenges by developing a single-layer soft actuator that responds to multiple stimuli using a straightforward solution-casting method. This actuator comprises bio-polymer gelatin, bio-compatible PEDOT:PSS, and iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. Our actuator exhibits responsiveness to a range of organic solvent vapors, including water vapor, light, and magnetic fields. Notably, it exhibits rapid and reversible bending in distinct directions in response to different vapors, bending upwards in the presence of water vapor and downwards in the presence of alcohol vapor. Moreover, exposure to infrared (IR) light induces a bending toward the light source. The incorporation of magnet-responsive Fe3O4 nanoparticles induces multi-functionality in the actuator. The actuation characteristics of the actuator are controlled by leveraging its responsiveness to dual stimuli, such as water vapor and magnetic fields, as well as light and magnetic fields. For the proof of concept, we showcase several potential applications of our multi-stimuli responsive soft actuator, including magnet-triggered electrical switches, cargo transportation, soft grippers, targeted drug delivery, energy harvesting, and bio-mimicry.

Abstract
Poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate-co-2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate), P(HEMA-co-DMAEMAx), copolymers were quaternized through the reaction of a part of (dimethylamino)ethyl moieties of DMAEMA units with 1-bromohexadecane. Antimicrobial coatings were further prepared through the cross-linking reaction between the remaining DMAEMA units of these copolymers and the epoxide ring of poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide-co-glycidyl methacrylate), P(DMAm-co-GMAx), copolymers. The combination of P(HEMA-co-DMAEMAx)/P(DMAm-co-GMAx) copolymers not only enabled control over quaternization and cross-linking for coating stabilization but also allowed the optimization of the processing routes towards a more facile cost-effective methodology and the use of environmentally friendly solvents like ethanol. Careful consideration was given to achieve the right content of quaternized units, qDMAEMA, to ensure antimicrobial efficacy through an appropriate amphiphilic balance and sufficient free DMAEMA groups to react with GMA for coating stabilization. Optimal synthesis conditions were achieved by membranes consisting of cross-linked P(HEMA78-co-DMAEMA9-co-qDMAEMA13)/P(DMAm-co-GMA42) membranes. The obtained membranes were multifunctional as they were self-standing and antimicrobial, while they demonstrated a distinct fast response to changes in humidity levels, widening the opportunities for the construction of "smart" antimicrobial actuators, such as non-contact antimicrobial switches.

Abstract
Soft actuators produce the mechanical force needed for the functional movements of soft robots, but they suffer from critical drawbacks since previously reported soft actuators often rely on electrical wires or pneumatic tubes for the power supply, which would limit the potential usage of soft robots in various practical applications. In this article, we review the new types of untethered soft actuators that represent breakthroughs and discuss the future perspective of soft actuators. We discuss the functional materials and innovative strategies that gave rise to untethered soft actuators and deliver our perspective on challenges and opportunities for future-generation soft actuators.

Abstract
Plant leaves, whose remarkable ability for morphogenesis results in a wide range of petal and leaf shapes in response to environmental cues, have inspired scientific studies as well as the development of engineering structures and devices. Although some typical shape changes in plants and the driving force for such shape evolution have been extensively studied, there remain many poorly understood mechanisms, characteristics, and principles associated with the vast array of shape formation of plant leaves in nature. Here, we present a comprehensive study that combines experiment, theory, and numerical simulations of one such topic-the mechanics and mechanisms of corrugated leaf folding induced by differential shrinking in Rhapis excelsa. Through systematic measurements of the dehydration process in sectioned leaves, we identify a linear correlation between change in the leaf-folding angle and water loss. Building on experimental findings, we develop a generalized model that provides a scaling relationship for water loss in sectioned leaves. Furthermore, our study reveals that corrugated folding induced by dehydration in R. excelsa leaves is achieved by the deformation of a structural architecture-the "hinge" cells. Utilizing such connections among structure, morphology, environmental stimuli, and mechanics, we fabricate several biomimetic machines, including a humidity sensor and morphing devices capable of folding in response to dehydration. The mechanisms of corrugated folding in R. excelsa identified in this work provide a general understanding of the interactions between plant leaves and water. The actuation mechanisms identified in this study also provide insights into the rational design of soft machines.

Abstract
Multivapor-responsive biocompatible soft actuators have immense potential for applications in soft robotics and medical technology. We report fast, fully reversible, and multivapor-responsive controlled actuation of a pure cassava-starch-based film. Notably, this starch-based actuator sustains its actuated state for over 60 min with a continuous supply of water vapor. The durability of the film and repeatability of the actuation performance have been established upon subjecting the film to more than 1400 actuation cycles in the presence of water vapor. The starch-based actuators exhibit intriguing antagonistic actuation characteristics when exposed to different solvent vapors. In particular, they bend upward in response to water vapor and downward when exposed to ethanol vapor. This fascinating behavior opens up new possibilities for controlling the magnitude and direction of actuation by manipulating the ratio of water to ethanol in the binary solution. Additionally, the control of the bending axis of the starch-based actuator, when exposed to water vapor, is achieved by imprinting-orientated patterns on the surface of the starch film. The effect of microstructure, postsynthesis annealing, and pH of the starch solution on the actuation performance of the starch film is studied in detail. Our starch-based actuator can lift 10 times its own weight upon exposure to ethanol vapor. It can generate force ∼4.2 mN upon exposure to water vapor. To illustrate the vast potential of our cassava-starch-based actuators, we have showcased various proof-of-concept applications, ranging from biomimicry to crawling robots, locomotion near perspiring human skin, bidirectional electric switches, ventilation in the presence of toxic vapors, and smart lifting systems. These applications significantly broaden the practical uses of these starch-based actuators in the field of soft robotics.

Abstract
MicroRNA (miRNA) is an important biomarker for early diagnosis of cancers. However, sensitive and convenient methods for miRNA detection remain a challenge. Here, we use a natural biopolymer sporopollenin purified from Ganoderma lucidum spores as a substrate for isothermal amplification (hybridization chain reaction, HCR). Sporopollenin capsules (SP) promotes HCR and forms longer and more abundant double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) than graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The nanoporous structure of sporopollenin capsules containing abundant water provides a hydrous environment and enhances the hybridization efficiency of DNA significantly. We construct an ultrasensitive fluorescent biosensor to detect miR-155. The efficient HCR amplification on SP leads to an ultralow detection limit of 1 aM for miR-155 and a wide linear range of 1 aM-10 fM (R2 = 0.99). Furthermore, our fluorescence biosensor can discriminate miRNA mutants with high selectivity. This biosensor is also highly sensitive in human serum (detection limit 10 aM). It adsorbs less serum protein than GO and CNTs, thus minimizing the interference caused by the non-specific adsorption. Our study would promote medical application of SP-based biosensor in the future.

To overcome the limits of existing hygroactuators, such as simplistic actuation mode, slow response, and low efficiency, here we present three kinds of humidity-powered soft machines adopting directionally electrospun hygroresponsive nanofibrous sheets. The wheels, seesaws, and vehicles developed in this work utilize spatial humidity gradient naturally established near moist surfaces such as human skin, so that they operate spontaneously, realizing energy scavenging or harvesting. We also constructed a theoretical framework to mechanically analyze their dynamics, which allowed us to optimize their design to obtain the highest motion speed physically possible.

Abstract
Untethered soft robots have attracted growing attention due to their safe interaction with living organisms, good flexibility, and accurate remote control. However, the materials involved are often nonbiodegradable or are derived from nonrenewable resources, leading to serious environmental problems. Here, we report a biomass-based multistimuli-responsive actuator based on cuttlefish ink nanoparticles (CINPs), wood-derived cellulose nanofiber (CNF), and bioderived polylactic acid (PLA). Taking advantage of the good photothermal conversion performance and exceptionally hygroscopic sensitivity of the CINPs/CNF composite (CICC) layer and the opposite thermally induced deformation behavior between the CICC layer and PLA layer, the soft actuator exhibits reversible deformation behaviors under near-infrared (NIR) light, humidity, and temperature stimuli, respectively. By introducing patterned or alignment structures and combining them with a macroscopic reassembly strategy, diverse programmable shape-morphing from 2D to 3D such as letter-shape, coiling, self-folding, and more sophisticated 3D deformations have been demonstrated. All of these deformations can be successfully predicted by finite element analysis (FEA) . Furthermore, this actuator has been further applied as an untethered grasping robot, weightlifting robot, and climbing robot capable of climbing a vertical pole. Such actuators consisting entirely of biodegradable materials will offer a sustainable future for untethered soft robots.

Abstract
The Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) procedure for corneal transplantation is challenging due to the need to unscroll the donor graft within the recipient's eye. This process of unscrolling is complex, time-consuming, leads to a loss of endothelial cells and, most importantly, can negatively impact the graft's adhesion and integration with the host tissue after surgery. This problem is particularly evident when the graft is young. However, the physics behind this scrolling is not well understood, and therefore no sustainable solution is attained. Here, we propose that the concentration gradient of the medium used during transplant leads to a displacement gradient across the graft thickness, resulting in an out-of-plane folding or scrolling of the graft tissue. Using chitosan bilayer-based experimental models, it is experimentally demonstrated that this diffusion-coupled-deformation phenomenon can successfully explain why younger donor grafts tend to scroll tighter than older ones. Most importantly, we illustrate here through experiments that the medium can be engineered to reduce the scroll tightness and thus reduce the surgical inconveniences and improve post-transplant recovery. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This paper addresses a major issue that surgeons face while doing Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) in unscrolling grafts during the graft insertion procedure. The currently used tapping method to unscroll the graft inside the patient's eye significantly reduces endothelial cell count, thus affecting its lifetime. Surprisingly, the physics behind graft scrolling is not well understood, so no sustainable solutions are proposed by the medical community. In this work, we present the underlying mechanism of DMEK graft scroll and illustrate experimentally the reason for scroll tightness through a chitosan bilayer based experiment model. Most importantly, we have successfully demonstrated that the preserving medium of the grafts can be engineered to reduce scroll tightness.

Abstract
Microactuators can autonomously convert external energy into specific mechanical motions. With the feature sizes varying from the micrometer to millimeter scale, microactuators offer many operation and control possibilities for miniaturized devices. In recent years, advanced microfluidic techniques have revolutionized the fabrication, actuation, and functionalization of microactuators. Microfluidics can not only facilitate fabrication with continuously changing materials but also deliver various signals to stimulate the microactuators as desired, and consequently improve microfluidic chips with multiple functions. Herein, this cross-field that systematically correlates microactuator properties and microfluidic functions is comprehensively reviewed. The fabrication strategies are classified into two types according to the flow state of the microfluids: stop-flow and continuous-flow prototyping. The working mechanism of microactuators in microfluidic chips is discussed in detail. Finally, the applications of microactuator-enriched functional chips, which include tunable imaging devices, micromanipulation tools, micromotors, and microsensors, are summarized. The existing challenges and future perspectives are also discussed. It is believed that with the rapid progress of this cutting-edge field, intelligent microsystems may realize high-throughput manipulation, characterization, and analysis of tiny objects and find broad applications in various fields, such as tissue engineering, micro/nanorobotics, and analytical devices.

Abstract
Spores and pollens refer to the reproductive cells of seed plants and asexually reproducing sporophytes, exhibiting a natural core-shell structure and exquisite surface morphology. They possess extraordinary dimensional homogeneity, porosity, amphiphilicity and adhesion. Their sporopollenin exine layer endows them with chemically stable, UV resistant, and biocompatible properties, which can also be facilely functionalized due to sufficient groups on the surface. The unique characteristics of spores and pollens have facilitated a wide range of applications in drug carriers, biological imaging, food science, microrobotics, environmental purification, flexible electronics, cell scaffolds, 3D printing materials and biological detection. This review showcases the common structural composition and physicochemical properties of spores and pollens, describes the extraction and processing methods, and summarizes the recent research on their applications in various fields. Following these sections, this review analyzes the existing challenges in spores and pollen research and provides a future outlook.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this work, natural club moss (Lycopodium clavatum, LC) spores with a porous surface morphology and highly uniform size distribution were engineered into controlled-release microvehicles for pesticide delivery. As a proof of concept, a widely used fungicide, fluazinam (FLU), was successfully loaded into LC spores and then modified with different amounts of CaCO3 (CaC) to extend the efficacy duration of FLU. Significantly, as the control target of FLU, clubroot disease is a worldwide destructive disease of cruciferous crops, and its development is favored by acidic soils and can be suppressed at high Ca concentrations. RESULTS Fabricated FLU@LC-CaC microcapsules, FLU loading and CaCO3 deposition were systematically characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The as-prepared FLU@LC-CaC microcapsules showed sustained-release behaviors and were potentially able to supplement the Ca concentration in acidic environments. This approach synergistically enhanced in vivo bioactivity for the on-demand control of clubroot disease. An in vivo bioassay revealed that the control efficacy of FLU@LC-CaC against clubroot disease in pak choi (Brassica chinensis) (66.4%) was 1.7-fold higher than that of a commercial FLU suspension concentrate (38.2%) over the course of the cultivation period (35 days). CONCLUSIONS This work provides new ideas not only for developing eco-friendly and scalable microvehicles for pesticide delivery based on natural sporopollen, but also for unconventional research perspectives in on-demand pest management based on their occurrence characteristics. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

Abstract
Accurate analysis of living circulating tumor cells (CTCs) plays a crucial role in cancer diagnosis and prognosis evaluation. However, it is still challenging to develop a facile method for accurate, sensitive, and broad-spectrum isolation of living CTCs. Herein, inspired by the filopodia-extending behavior and clustered surface-biomarker of living CTCs, we present a unique baits-trap chip to achieve accurate and ultrasensitive capture of living CTCs from peripheral blood. The baits-trap chip is designed with the integration of nanocage (NCage) structure and branched aptamers. The NCage structure could "trap" the extended filopodia of living CTCs and resist the adhesion of filopodia-inhibited apoptotic cells, thus realizing the accurate capture (∼95% accuracy) of living CTCs independent of complex instruments. Using an in-situ rolling circle amplification (RCA) method, branched aptamers were easily modified onto the NCage structure, and served as "baits" to enhance the multi-interactions between CTC biomarker and chips, leading to ultrasensitive (99%) and reversible cell capture performance. The baits-trap chip successfully detects living CTCs in broad-spectrum cancer patients and achieves high diagnostic sensitivity (100%) and specificity (86%) of early prostate cancer. Therefore, our baits-trap chip provides a facile, accurate, and ultrasensitive strategy for living CTC isolation in clinical. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: A unique baits-trap chip integrated with precise nanocage structure and branched aptamers was developed for the accurate and ultrasensitive capture of living CTCs. Compared with the current CTC isolation methods that are unable to distinguish CTC viability, the nanocage structure could not only "trap" the extended-filopodia of living CTCs, but also resist the adhesion of filopodia-inhibited apoptotic cells, thus realizing the accurate capture of living CTCs. Additionally, benefiting from the "baits-trap" synergistic effects generated by aptamer modification and nanocage structure, our chip achieved ultrasensitive, reversible capture of living CTCs. Moreover, this work provided a facile strategy for living CTC isolation from the blood of patients with early-stage and advanced cancer, exhibiting high consistency with the pathological diagnosis.

Abstract
Humidity-responsive materials have attracted increasing attention for their potential use in various applications, e.g., sensors, soft robotics, and human-machine interfaces. Much effort has been focused on the use of ionic liquids for the construction of humidity-responsive sensors; yet, not enough attention has been paid on the susceptibility of the used poly(ionic liquid)s to microorganisms. This is especially relevant to the wide use of the polymers for biomedical applications, e.g., wearable body-condition sensors or healthcare control systems. We herein describe the development of dual functional, self-standing, monolayer antimicrobial membranes derived from cross-linked copolymers functionalized with ionic liquids. In a first step, random copolymers of poly(4-vinylbenzyl N-alkyl imidazolium chloride-co-acrylic acid), P(VBCImCn-co-AA20), were synthesized bearing aliphatic chains of different lengths (where n = 1, 4, 8, 12, 16 carbon atoms) to investigate the effect of hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity on the humidity-responsive properties of the copolymer and its antimicrobial activity. The aforementioned copolymers were later blended with the complementary reactive copolymers of poly(cetyl trimethylammonium 4-styrene sulfonate-co-glycidyl methacrylate), P(SSAmC16-co-GMA20), to provide highly stable films and coatings through thermal cross-linking. The membrane P(VBCImC12-co-AA20)/P(SSAmC16-co-GMA20) with a molar ratio of 3:1 (mol AA/mol GMA) exhibited immediate and high response to moisture through folding or flipping motions when placed on a wet filter paper or on the palm of a hand. The inhibition of growth for selected bacterial species (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus) on the copolymer membranes was dependent on the length of the imidazolium alkyl chain and the species. Additionally, in the case of the cross-linked P(VBCImCn-co-AA20)/P(SSAmC16-co-GMA20) membranes, the overall efficacy was very high against all microorganisms tested, which, combined with their high humidity responsiveness, enables their potential application.

Abstract
In recent years, graphene oxide (GO)-based multi-responsive actuators have attracted great interest due to their board application in soft robots, artificial muscles, and intelligent mechanics. However, most GO-based actuators suffer from low mechanical strength. Inspired by the natural nacre, a graphene oxide-bacterial cellulose (GO-BC) film with a "brick and mortar" structure is constructed. Compared with the pure GO film, the tensile strength of the GO-BC film is increased by about 2 times. Benefiting from the rich oxygen-containing functional groups of GO sheets and BC nanofibers, the cracked GO-BC films can be pasted together with the help of water, which can be used to construct GO-BC films with multi-dimensional complex structures. Subsequently, a GO-BC/polymer actuator capable of responding to various stimuli is successfully developed through a complementary strategy of "active layer and inert layer". Further, based on the water-assisted pasting properties of GO-BC films, a series of GO-BC/polymer actuators with 3D complex deformations can be fabricated by pasting together two or more GO-BC/polymer actuators. Finally, the potential applications of multi-response GO-BC/polymer actuators in flexible robots, artificial muscles, and smart devices are demonstrated through a series of applications such as bionic sunflowers, octopus-inspired soft tentacles, and smart curtains.

Abstract
The hygroscopic deformation of pine cones, featured by opening and closing their scales depending on the environmental humidity, is a well-known stimuli-responsive model system for artificial actuators. However, it has not been noted that the deformation of pine cones is an ultra-slow process. Here, we reveal that vascular bundles with unique parallelly arranged spring/square microtubular heterostructures dominate the hygroscopic movement, characterized as ultra-slow motion with the outer sclereids. The spring microtubes give a much larger hygroscopic deformation than that of the square microtubes along the longitudinal axis direction, which bends the vascular bundles and consequently drives the scales to move. The outer sclereids with good water retention enable the vascular-bundle-triggered deformation to proceed ultra-slowly. Drawing inspiration, we developed soft actuators enabling controllable yet unperceivable motion. The motion velocity is almost two orders of magnitude lower than that of the same-class actuators reported, which made the as-developed soft actuators applicable in camouflage and reconnaissance.

Abstract
Smart surfaces with superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic characteristics can be controlled by external stimuli, such as temperature. These transitions are attributed to the molecular-level conformation of the grafted polymer chains due to the varied interactions at the interface. Here, tunable surfaces were prepared by grafting two well-known thermo-responsive polymers, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(oligoethylene glycol)methyl ether acrylate (POEGMA188) onto micro-pollen particles of uniform morphology and roughness. Direct Raman spectra and thermodynamic analyses revealed that above the lower critical solution temperature, the bonded and free water at the interface partially transformed to intermediate water that disrupted the "water cage" surrounding the hydrophobic groups. The increased amounts of intermediate water produced hydrogen bonding networks that were less ordered around the polymer grafted microparticles, inducing a weaker binding interaction at the interface and a lower tendency to wet the surface. Combining the roughness factor, the bulk surface assembled by distinct polymer-grafted-pollen microparticles (PNIPAM or POEGMA188) could undergo a different wettability transition for liquid under air, water, and oil. This work identifies new perspectives on the interfacial water structure variation at a multiple length scale, which contributed to the temperature-dependent surface wettability transition. It offers inspiration for the application of thermo-responsive surface to liquid-gated multiphase separation, water purification and harvesting, biomedical devices, and printing.

Abstract
Water-responsive (WR) materials, due to their controllable mechanical response to humidity without energy actuation, have attracted lots of attention to the development of smart actuators. WR material-based smart actuators can transform natural humidity to a required mechanical motion and have been widely used in various fields, such as soft robots, micro-generators, smart building materials, and textiles. In this paper, the development of smart actuators based on different WR materials has been reviewed systematically. First, the properties of different biological WR materials and the corresponding actuators are summarized, including plant materials, animal materials, and microorganism materials. Additionally, various synthetic WR materials and their related applications in smart actuators have also been introduced in detail, including hydrophilic polymers, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, and other synthetic materials. Finally, the challenges of the WR actuator are analyzed from the three perspectives of actuator design, control methods, and compatibility, and the potential solutions are also discussed. This paper may be useful for the development of not only soft actuators that are based on WR materials, but also smart materials applied to renewable energy.

Origami folding is
an easy, cost-effective, and scalable fabrication
method for changing a flat material into a complex 3D functional shape.
Here, we created semicrystalline silk films doped with iron oxide
particles by mold casting and annealing. The flat silk films could
be loaded with natural dyes and folded into 3D geometries using origami
principles following plasticization. They performed locomotion under
a magnetic field, were reusable, and displayed colorimetric stability.
The critical parameters for the design of the semi-autonomous silk
film, including ease of folding, shape preservation, and locomotion
in the presence of a magnetic field, were characterized, and pH detection
was achieved by eye and by digital image colorimetry with a response
time below 1 min. We demonstrate a practical application—a
battery-free origami silk boat—as a colorimetric sensor for
waterborne pollutants, which was reusable at least five times. This
work introduces silk eco-sensors and merges responsive actuation and
origami techniques.

Water-responsive (WR) materials that reversibly deform in response to humidity changes show great potential for developing muscle-like actuators for miniature and biomimetic robotics. Here, it is presented that Bacillus (B.) subtilis' peptidoglycan (PG) exhibits WR actuation energy and power densities reaching 72.6 MJ m-3 and 9.1 MW m-3 , respectively, orders of magnitude higher than those of frequently used actuators, such as piezoelectric actuators and dielectric elastomers. PG can deform as much as 27.2% within 110 ms, and its actuation pressure reaches ≈354.6 MPa. Surprisingly, PG exhibits an energy conversion efficiency of ≈66.8%, which can be attributed to its super-viscous nanoconfined water that efficiently translates the movement of water molecules to PG's mechanical deformation. Using PG, WR composites that can be integrated into a range of engineering structures are developed, including a robotic gripper and linear actuators, which illustrate the possibilities of using PG as building blocks for high-efficiency WR actuators.

Abstract
Although paperless technologies are becoming ubiquitous, paper and paper-based materials remain one of the most widely used resources, predicted to exceed an annual total of 460 million metric tons by 2030. Given the environmental challenges, deleterious impact on natural resources, and waste associated with conventional wood-based paper manufacturing, developing more sustainable strategies to source, produce, and recycle paper from natural materials is essential. Here, the development and production of reusable and recyclable paper are reported. This approach offers a pathway for easily producing natural pollen grains via ecofriendly, economical, scalable, and low-energy fabrication routes. It is demonstrated that the pollen-based paper exhibits high-quality printability, readability, and erasability, enabling its reuse. Based on the pH-responsive morphological responses of engineered pollen materials, a method for hygro stable printing and on-demand unprinting is presented. The reusability of the pollen paper renders it more advantageous than conventional single-print wood-based paper. This study thus provides possible pathways to utilize non-allergenic pollen, which is renewable and naturally abundant, as a sustainable source of reusable paper. While this work primarily deals with paper, the methods described here can be extended to produce other products such as cartons and containers for the storage and transport of liquid and solid materials.

Abstract
The development of a novel preparation strategy for 3D porous network structures with an aligned channel or wall is always in challenge. Herein, a 3D porous network composed of an aligned graphene-based wall is fabricated by a confined self-assembly strategy in which holey reduced graphene oxide (HrGO)/lignin sulfonate (Lig) composites are orientedly anchored on the framework of the Lig/single-wall carbon nanotube (Lig/SWCNT) hydrogel by vacuum-assisted filtration accompanied with confined self-assembly and followed with hydrothermal treatment. After freeze drying, the obtained ultralight Lig/SWCNT/HrGOal aerogel exhibits excellent shape memory properties and can roll back to the original shape even if suffering from a high compressive strain of 86.2%. Furthermore, the as-prepared aerogel used as a water-driven artificial muscle shows powerful driving force and can lift ultrahigh weight cargo that is 1030.6 times its own weight. When the prepared Lig/SWCNT/HrGOal aerogel is used as a pressure sensor, it also exhibits high sensitivity (2.28 kPa-1) and a wide detection region of 0.27-14.1 kPa. Additionally, the symmetric flexible supercapacitor assembled with as-prepared aerogel films shows superior stored energy performance that can tolerate 5000 cycles of bending. The present work not only fabricates a high-performance multifunctional material but also develops a new strategy for the preparation a wood-like 3D porous aligned wall network structure.

Abstract
Soft actuators that respond to external stimuli like moisture, magnetism, light, and temperature have received tremendous attention owing to their promising potential in many frontier applications, including smart switches, soft robots, sensors, and artificial muscles. However, most of the conventional actuators can only be triggered by a solo stimulus and demand advanced manufacturing techniques that utilize expensive, hazardous, and synthetic raw materials. Herein, we design and fabricate a multiple stimuli-responsive actuator using graphene oxide, Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and tapioca starch via a water evaporation-induced self-assembly method. The resultant hybrid actuator exhibits a bending speed of ∼72° s-1 upon moisture exposure. Moreover, it can perform clockwise and counterclockwise rotations, linear motion, and magnetic object capture by regulating a magnetic field. As representative examples, the actuator is used to fabricate various smart devices such as smart curtains, biomimetic structures, and a smart gripper that undergo complex and consecutive motion under the influence of multiple stimuli.

Abstract
Sporopollenin shells isolated from natural pollen grains have received attention in translational and applied research in diverse fields of drug delivery, vaccine delivery, and wastewater remediation. However, little is known about the sporopollenin shell's potential as an adsorbent. Herein, we have isolated sporopollenin shells from four structurally diverse pollen species, black walnut, marsh elder, mugwort, and silver birch, to study protein adsorption onto sporopollenin shells. We investigated three major interfacial properties, surface area, surface functional groups, and surface charge, to elucidate the mechanism of protein adsorption onto sporopollenin shells. We showed that sporopollenin shells have a moderate specific surface area (<12 m2/g). Phosphoric acid and potassium hydroxide treatments that were used to isolate sporopollenin shells from natural pollen grains also result in the functionalization of sporopollenin shell surfaces with ionizable groups of carboxylic acid and carboxylate salt. As a result, sporopollenin shells exhibit a negative ζ potential in the range of -75 to -82 mV at pH 10 when dispersed in water. The ζ potentials of sporopollenin shells remain negative in the pH range of 2.5-11, with the absolute value of ζ potential showing a decrease with the decrease in pH. The negative surface charge promotes the adsorption of protein onto the sporopollenin shell via electrostatic interaction. Despite having a moderate surface area, sporopollenin shells adsorb a significant amount of lysozyme (145-340 μg lysozyme per mg of sporopollenin shells). Lysozyme adsorption onto sporopollenin shells alters the surface, and the surface charge becomes positive at acidic pH. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of sporopollenin shells to adsorb proteins, highlights the critical role of sporopollenin shell's interfacial properties in protein adsorption, and identifies the mechanism of protein adsorption on sporopollenin shells.

Abstract
Pollen is an excellent natural substance that plays an essential role in the reproduction of plants. In this review, we explain the structure, compositions, and characteristics of pollens. We consider pollen as a multifunctional tool that can be used in therapeutic/diagnostic systems. This microcapsule can be used in the forms of the hollow microcapsule, microgel, and composite, and also can be a tool for the synthesis of micro/nanostructures in various medical applications and used for the production of genetically modified plants that affect human health. In addition, we investigate the capability of this multifunctional tool in the immune system targeting that acts as an immunomodulator. In all applications and capabilities, we explain the potential of using nanostructures as parts of these systems and as auxiliary tools for promoting the applications of pollen. It is expected that soon, with the help of pollen-based therapeutic/diagnostic systems with the ability to immune system targeting, we will achieve effective and targeted therapeutic systems for the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. In this paper, we suggest some ideas that may be a new step for future researches.

Abstract
We demonstrate how programmable shape evolution and deformation can be induced in plant-based natural materials through standard digital printing technologies. With nonallergenic pollen paper as the substrate material, we show how specific geometrical features and architectures can be custom designed through digital printing of patterns to modulate hygrophobicity, geometry, and complex shapes. These autonomously hygromorphing configurations can be "frozen" by postprocessing coatings to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of uses and applications. Through computational simulations involving the finite element method and accompanying experiments, we develop quantitative insights and a general framework for creating complex shapes in eco-friendly natural materials with potential sustainable applications for scalable manufacturing.

Abstract
There is broad interest in developing photonically active substrates from naturally abundant, minimally processed materials that can help to overcome the environmental challenges of synthetic plastic substrates while also gaining inspiration from biological design principles. To date, most efforts have focused on rationally engineering the micro- and nanoscale structural properties of cellulose-based materials by tuning fibril and fiber dimensions and packing along with chemical modifications, while there is largely untapped potential to design photonically active substrates from other classes of natural materials with distinct morphological features. Herein, the fabrication of a flexible pollen-derived substrate is reported, which exhibits high transparency (>92%) and high haze (>84%) on account of the micro- and nanostructure properties of constituent pollen particles that are readily obtained from nature and require minimal extraction or processing to form the paper-like substrate based on colloidal self-assembly. Experiments and simulations confirm that the optical properties of the pollen substrate are tunable and arise from light-matter interactions with the spiky surface of pollen particles. In a proof-of-concept example, the pollen substrate is incorporated into a functional perovskite solar cell while the tunable optical properties of the intrinsically micro-/nanostructured pollen substrate can be useful for a wide range of optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
There are multiple obstacles for the storage and digestion of orally administered bioactive macromolecules. This study developed a low-cost and sustained-release delivery system (sporopollenin exine capsules with zein/tannic acid modification) of proteins with excellent storage stability, and at the same time provided insights into the sustained-release mechanism through exploring the interaction between zein and tannic acid (TA). β-Galactosidase (β-Gal) was utilized as a model protein and loaded into sporopollenin exine capsules (SECs), which were then coated with the zein/TA system. Under the optimized zein/TA conditions, the zein/TA system showed better performance than the zein alone system in the sustained release of β-Gal, with the residual activity of about 70.26% after 24 h of simulated digestion. Evaluation of the storage stability demonstrated a β-Gal residual activity of nearly 90% for 28 days at 25 °C. Additionally, FTIR analysis demonstrated that the stability of the zein/TA system depends on both hydrogen bonding and certain covalent bonding through the Schiff-base reaction, and the sustained release is regulated by the bonding strength.

Abstract
Materials that dynamically respond to their environment have diverse applications in artificial muscles, soft robotics, and smart textiles. Inspired by biological systems, humidity- and water-responsive actuators that bend, twist, and contract have been previously demonstrated. However, more powerful artificial muscles with large strokes and high work densities are needed, especially those that can be made cost-effectively from eco-friendly materials. We here derive such muscles from naturally abundant lotus fibers. A coiled lotus fiber yarn muscle provides a large, reversible tensile stroke of 38% and a work capacity during contraction of 450 J/kg, which is 56 times higher than that of natural skeletal muscles and higher than that for any other reported natural fiber muscles. In addition, highly twisted lotus fiber yarn muscles provide a fully reversible torsional stroke of 200°/mm of muscle length and a peak rotation speed of 200 rpm, with a generated specific torque of 488 mN·m/kg for a 2.5 cm long muscle. Potential applications of these lotus fiber yarn muscles are demonstrated for a weight-lifting artificial limb and a smart textile.

Abstract
Recently, plant pollen has been used as a source of activated carbon to produce carbon-containing supercapacitor electrodes. However, in this study, pollen was used as a biotemplate with a completely different approach. As a biotemplate, pollen offers a wide range of varieties in terms of exterior, porosity, shape, and size. An electrode formed by the use of metal oxide grown on the pollen exine layer (sporopollenin microcapsules) as the active substance will inevitably exhibit good electrochemical capacitive properties. Juglans male flowers have been distinguished by dissection from anthers. Isolation of pollen grains from anthers was carried out using sieving from suitable sieves (45-200 μm). Juglans sporopollenin exine microcapsules (SECs) were separated from the intine and protoplasm by acetolysis in combination with reflux. The solution containing SECs, metal ions, and Ni foam was put into a Teflon-lined hydrothermal container, and then, it was reacted at 120 °C for 15 h. The resulting precipitate, as well as the Ni foam, was heat-treated at 300 and 360 °C for 3 h in air. The raw pollen, chemically treated pollen, and cobalt-coated SEC (CoSEC) and CoSEC/Ni foam were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction techniques. Two different types of supercapacitor electrode designs, with the use of exine microcapsules of Juglans sporopollenin, were performed for the first time. The maximum specific capacitance was up to 1691 F g-1 at 5 A g-1.
