Spatially dependent H-bond dynamics at interfaces of water/biomimetic self-assembled lattice materials

Fluorinated polymer zwitterions on gold nanoparticles: patterned catalyst surfaces guide interfacial transport and electrochemical CO2 reduction

We report the use of fluorinated polymer zwitterions to build hybrid systems for efficient CO2 electroreduction. The unique combination of hydrophilic phosphorylcholine and hydrophobic fluorinated moieties in these polymers creates a fractal structure with mixed branched cylinders on the surface of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). In the presence of these polymers, the CO faradaic efficiency improves by 50-80% in the range of -0.7 V to -0.9 V. The fractal structures have a domain size of ∼3 nm, showing enhanced mass transfer kinetics of CO2 approaching the catalyst surfaces without limiting ion diffusion. The phase-separated hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains offer separated channeling to water and CO2, as confirmed by attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) and molecule dynamic (MD) simulations. H2O molecules permeate extensively into the polymer layer that adsorbs on zwitterions, forming continuous chains, while CO2 molecules strongly associate with the fluorinated tails of fluorinated polyzwitterions, with oxygen facing the positively charged amine groups. Overall, this coupling of zwitterion and fluorocarbon in a polymer material creates new opportunities for defining microenvironments of metallic nanocatalysts in hybrid structures.

Multimodal Nonlinear Hyperspectral Chemical Imaging Using Line-Scanning Vibrational Sum-Frequency Generation Microscopy

Vibrational sum-frequency generation (VSFG), a second-order nonlinear optical signal, has traditionally been used to study molecules at interfaces as a spectroscopy technique with a spatial resolution of ~100 µm. However, the spectroscopy is not sensitive to the heterogeneity of a sample. To study mesoscopically heterogeneous samples, we, along with others, pushed the resolution limit of VSFG spectroscopy down to ~1 µm level and constructed the VSFG microscope. This imaging technique not only can resolve sample morphologies through imaging, but also record a broadband VSFG spectrum at every pixel of the images. Being a second-order nonlinear optical technique, its selection rule enables the visualization of non-centrosymmetric or chiral self-assembled structures commonly found in biology, materials science, and bioengineering, among others. In this article, the audience will be guided through an inverted transmission design that allows for imaging unfixed samples. This work also showcases that VSFG microscopy can resolve chemical-specific geometric information of individual self-assembled sheets by combining it with a neural network function solver. Lastly, the images obtained under brightfield, SHG, and VSFG configurations of various samples briefly discuss the unique information revealed by VSFG imaging.

Interfacial Water-Dictated Oil Adhesion Based on Ion Modulation

Oil adhesion on ionic surfaces is ubiquitous in organisms and natural environments and is generally determined by surface chemical component and texture. However, when adhesion occurs, water molecules at the solid-liquid interface, acting as a bridge not only influenced by the structure and composition of the solid surface but also interacting with the neighboring oil molecules, play a crucial role but are always overlooked. Herein, we investigate the oil adhesion process on a carboxyl-terminated self-assembled monolayer surface (COOH-SAM) in ionic solutions and observe the interfacial water structure via surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in this system. It is found that the lower the tetracoordinated water content, the stronger the oil adhesion. Compared to monovalent ions, the strengthened binding of multivalent ions to the COOH-SAM surface makes the interfacial water more disordered, which eventually leads to a stronger oil adhesion. Notably, the amount of oil adhesion decreases with an increase in the thickness of the interfacial water region. The interfacial water-dictated oil adhesion has been demonstrated in capillary to simulate the water-driven oil recovery, providing a molecular-level explanation for enhanced oil recovery from low salinity water flooding and also indicating potential applications in intelligent microfluidic and seawater desalination.

Hydration behaviors of nonfouling zwitterionic materials

Zwitterionic materials have emerged as highly effective ultralow fouling materials for many applications, however the underlying mechanism of fouling resistance remains unclear. Using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and surface-sensitive sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy, we studied the hydration behaviors of zwitterionic materials, including trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and carboxybetaines of different charge-separation distances, to understand their fouling-resistant mechanism and provide a design principle for improved performance. Our study reveals that the interplay among hydrogen bonding, net charge, and dipole moment is crucial to the fouling-resistant capabilities of zwitterionic materials. Shortening of the zwitterionic spacing strengthens hydrogen bonding with water against biomolecule attachment due to the increased electrostatic and induction interactions, charge transfer, and improved structural stability. Moreover, the shortened charge separation reduces the dipole moment of zwitterionic materials with an intrinsic near-neutral net charge, decreasing their electrostatic and dipole-dipole interactions with biofoulers, and increasing their resistance to fouling. Compared to carboxybetaine compounds, TMAO has the shortest zwitterionic spacing and exhibits the strongest hydrogen bonding, the smallest net charge, and the minimum dipole moment, making it an excellent nonfouling material.

Rheological dynamics and structural characteristics of supramolecular assemblies of β-cyclodextrin and sulfonic surfactants

Cyclodextrins are highly functional compounds with a hydrophobic cavity capable of forming supramolecular inclusion complexes with various classes of molecules including surfactants. The resultant rich nanostructures and their dynamics are an interesting research problem in the area of soft condensed matter and related applications. Herein, we report novel dynamical supramolecular assemblies based on the complexation of β-cyclodextrin with 3 different sulfonic surfactants, which are sodium hexadecylsulfate, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, and myristyl sulfobetaine. It was observed that a β-cyclodextrin : surfactant/2 : 1 molar ratio was ideal for inducing axial growth and imparting large viscosities in the suspensions. Such complexation processes were accompanied by intriguing nanostructural phase behaviors and rheological properties that were very sensitive to the molecular architecture of sulfonic surfactants. The presence of an amino group in the head group of the surfactant allowed for large viscosities that reached 2.4 × 10⁴ Pa s which exhibited gel-like behavior. In contrast, smaller viscosity values with a lower consistency index were observed when a bulky aromatic ring was present instead. DIC microscopy was used to visually probe the microstructure of the systems with respect to sulfonate molecular architecture. Additionally, surface tension measurements, and FTIR and NMR spectroscopies were used to gain insights into the nature of interactions that lead to the complexation and nanostructural characteristics. Finally, mechanics correlating the supramolecular morphologies to the rheological properties were proposed.

Thermoresponsive behavior of cyclodextrin inclusion complexes with weakly anionic alkyl ethoxy carboxylates

This study investigates the temperature responsive behavior of inclusion complexes formed by weakly anionic alkyl ethoxy carboxylates and α (αCD) and β-cyclodextrins (βCD). Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) was performed to probe the structural behaviour at the 1-100 nanometer scale of the hierarchical assemblies at different temperatures. The phase transitions and thermodynamics were systematically monitored as a function of the degree of ionization of the surfactant by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Herein, we investigate the effect of the surfactant degree of ionization on the thermoresponsive properties of the inclusion complex supramolecular assemblies. Inclusion complexes formed with the ionized surfactant spontaneously assemble into multilayered structures, which soften with increasing temperature. We also found that the presence of charges is not only required to impart order to the supramolecular assemblies, but also induced in-plane crystallization of the inclusion complexes. Finally, the use of a weakly anionic surfactant allows us to probe the interplay between the charge density and temperature on the assembly of surfactant-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes. This study helps to improve the design of multi-responsive supramolecular systems based on cyclodextrins.

Neumann's principle based eigenvector approach for deriving non-vanishing tensor elements for nonlinear optics

Physical properties are commonly represented by tensors, such as optical susceptibilities. The conventional approach of deriving non-vanishing tensor elements of symmetric systems relies on the intuitive consideration of positive/negative sign flipping after symmetry operations, which could be tedious and prone to miscalculation. Here, we present a matrix-based approach that gives a physical picture centered on Neumann's principle. The principle states that symmetries in geometric systems are adopted by their physical properties. We mathematically apply the principle to the tensor expressions and show a procedure with clear physical intuition to derive non-vanishing tensor elements based on eigensystems. The validity of the approach is demonstrated by examples of commonly known second and third-order nonlinear susceptibilities of chiral/achiral surfaces, together with complicated scenarios involving symmetries such as D6 and Oh symmetries. We then further applied this method to higher-rank tensors that are useful for 2D and high-order spectroscopy. We also extended our approach to derive nonlinear tensor elements with magnetization, which is critical for measuring spin polarization on surfaces for quantum information technologies. A Mathematica code based on this generalized approach is included that can be applied to any symmetry and higher order nonlinear processes.

Imaging Orientation of a Single Molecular Hierarchical Self-Assembled Sheet: The Combined Power of a Vibrational Sum Frequency Generation Microscopy and Neural Network

In this work, we determined the tilt angles of molecular units in hierarchical self-assembled materials on a single-sheet level, which were not available previously. This was achieved by developing a fast line-scanning vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) hyperspectral imaging technique in combination with neural network analysis. Rapid VSFG imaging enabled polarization resolved images on a single sheet level to be measured quickly, circumventing technical challenges due to long-term optical instability. The polarization resolved hyperspectral images were then used to extract the supramolecular tilt angle of a self-assembly through a set of spectra-tilt angle relationships which were solved through neural network analysis. This unique combination of both novel techniques offers a new pathway to resolve molecular level structural information on self-assembled materials. Understanding these properties can further drive self-assembly design from a bottom-up approach for applications in biomimetic and drug delivery research.

Hierarchical assembly of pH-responsive surfactant-cyclodextrin complexes

In this work, the inclusion complexes of alkyl ethoxy carboxylates with α-cyclodextrin (αCD) and β-cyclodextrin (βCD) were investigated. The thermodynamics of the complexation process was probed by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and volumetry as a function of the degree of ionization of the surfactant. The complexation process was shown to be an enthalpically driven pH-independent process. For both types of cyclodextrins, the complexes were found to spontaneously self-assemble into highly-ordered supramolecular aggregates probed by small-angle neutron scattering and electron and optical microscopy. Herein, we report the formation of thin platelets for nonionized surfactant systems and equally spaced multilayered hollow cylinders for ionized systems in a hierarchical self-assembly process. In addition, the analysis allowed unveiling the effect of the number of ethylene oxides in the surfactants and the CD cavity size on the morphology of the aggregates. Finally, this study also highlights the importance of examining the tuning parameters' influence on the short and long-range interactions involved in the control of the assembly process.

Numerical Simulation of Vibrational Sum Frequency Generation Intensity for Non-Centrosymmetric Domains Interspersed in an Amorphous Matrix: A Case Study for Cellulose in Plant Cell Wall

Vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy can specifically probe molecular species non-centrosymmetrically arranged in a centrosymmetric or isotropic medium. This capability has been extensively utilized to detect and study molecular species present at the two-dimensional (2D) interface at which the centrosymmetry or isotropy of bulk phases is naturally broken. The same principle has been demonstrated to be very effective for the selective detection of non-centrosymmetric crystalline nanodomains interspersed in three-dimensional (3D) amorphous phases. However, the full spectral interpretation of SFG features has been difficult due to the complexity associated with the theoretical calculation of SFG responses of such 3D systems. This paper describes a numerical method to predict the relative SFG intensities of non-centrosymmetric nanodomains in 3D systems as functions of their size and concentration as well as their assembly patterns, i.e., the distributions of tilt, azimuth, and rotation angles with respect to the lab coordinate. We applied the developed method to predict changes in the CH and OH stretch modes characteristic to crystalline cellulose microfibrils distributed with various orders, which are relevant to plant cell wall structures. The same algorithm can also be applied to any SFG-active nanodomains interspersed in 3D amorphous matrices.

Survey on Adsorption of Low Molecular Weight Compounds in Cu-BTC Metal-Organic Framework: Experimental Results and Thermodynamic Modeling

This contribution aims at providing a critical overview of experimental results for the sorption of low molecular weight compounds in the Cu-BTC Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) and of their interpretation using available and new, specifically developed, theoretical approaches. First, a literature review of experimental results for the sorption of gases and vapors is presented, with particular focus on the results obtained from vibrational spectroscopy techniques. Then, an overview of theoretical models available in the literature is presented starting from semiempirical theoretical approaches suitable to interpret the adsorption thermodynamics of gases and vapors in Cu-BTC. A more detailed description is provided of a recently proposed Lattice Fluid approach, the Rigid Adsorbent Lattice Fluid (RALF) model. In addition, to deal with the cases where specific self- and cross-interactions (e.g., H-bonding, Lewis acid/Lewis base interactions) play a role, a modification of the RALF model, i.e., the RALFHB model, is introduced here for the first time. An extension of both RALF and RALFHB is also presented to cope with the cases in which the heterogeneity of the rigid adsorbent displaying a different kind of adsorbent cages is of relevance, as it occurs for the adsorption of some low molecular weight substances in Cu-BTC MOF.

Revealing the Molecular Physics of Lattice Self-Assembly by Vibrational Hyperspectral Imaging

Lattice self-assemblies (LSAs), which mimic protein assemblies, were studied using a new nonlinear vibrational imaging technique called vibrational sum-frequency generation (VSFG) microscopy. This technique successfully mapped out the mesoscopic morphology, microscopic geometry, symmetry, and ultrafast dynamics of an LSA formed by β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The spatial imaging also revealed correlations between these different physical properties. Such knowledge shed light on the functions and mechanical properties of LSAs. In this Feature Article, we briefly introduce the fundamental principles of the VSFG microscope and then discuss the in-depth molecular physics of the LSAs revealed by this imaging technique. The application of the VSFG microscope to the artificial LSAs also paved the way for an alternative approach to studying the structure-dynamic-function relationships of protein assemblies, which were essential for life and difficult to study because of their various and complicated interactions. We expect that the hyperspectral VSFG microscope could be broadly applied to many noncentrosymmetric soft materials.

Water Capture Mechanisms at Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Interfaces

Water capture mechanisms of zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-90 are revealed by differentiating the water clustering and the center pore filling step, using vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy (VSFG) at a one-micron spatial resolution and state-of-the-art molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Through spectral line shape comparison between VSFG and IR spectra, the relative humidity dependence of VSFG intensity, and MD simulations, based on MB-pol, we found water clustering and center pore filling happen nearly simultaneously within each pore, with water filling the other pores sequentially. The integration of nonlinear optics with MD simulations provides critical mechanistic insights into the pore filling mechanism and suggests that the relative strength of the hydrogen bonds governs the water uptake mechanisms. This molecular-level detailed mechanism can inform the rational optimization of metal-organic frameworks for water harvesting.

Vibrational Sum-Frequency Generation Hyperspectral Microscopy for Molecular Self-Assembled Systems

In this review, we discuss the recent developments and applications of vibrational sum-frequency generation (VSFG) microscopy. This hyperspectral imaging technique can resolve systems without inversion symmetry, such as surfaces, interfaces and noncentrosymmetric self-assembled materials, in the spatial, temporal, and spectral domains. We discuss two common VSFG microscopy geometries: wide-field and confocal point-scanning. We then introduce the principle of VSFG and the relationships between hyperspectral imaging with traditional spectroscopy, microscopy, and time-resolved measurements. We further highlight crucial applications of VSFG microscopy in self-assembled monolayers, cellulose in plants, collagen fibers, and lattice self-assembled biomimetic materials. In these systems, VSFG microscopy reveals relationships between physical properties that would otherwise be hidden without being spectrally, spatially, and temporally resolved. Lastly, we discuss the recent development of ultrafast transient VSFG microscopy, which can spatially measure the ultrafast vibrational dynamics of self-assembled materials. The review ends with an outlook on the technical challenges of and scientific potential for VSFG microscopy.
