Facile self-assembly of colloidal diamond from tetrahedral patchy particles via ring selection

Interplay between the Formation of Colloidal Clathrate and Cubic Diamond Crystals

Controlling the valency of directional interactions of patchy particles is insufficient for the selective formation of target crystalline structures due to the competition between phases of similar free energy. Examples of such are stacking hybrids of interwoven hexagonal and cubic diamonds with (i) its liquid phase, (ii) arrested glasses, or (iii) clathrates, all depending on the relative patch size, despite being within the one-bond-per-patch regime. Herein, using molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that although tetrahedral patchy particles with narrow patches can assemble into clathrates or stacking hybrids in the bulk, this behavior can be suppressed by the application of external surface potential. Depending on its strength, the selective growth of either cubic diamond crystals or empty sII clathrate cages can be achieved. The formation of a given ordered network depends on the structure of the first adlayer, which is commensurate with the emerging network.

Transformable Superisostatic Crystals Self-Assembled from Segment Colloidal Rods

Transformable mechanical structures can switch between distinct mechanical states. Whether this kind of structure can be self-assembled from simple building blocks at microscale is a question to be answered. In this work, we propose a self-assembly strategy for these structures based on a nematic monolayer of segmented colloidal rods with lateral cutting. By using Monte Carlo simulation, we find that rods with different cutting degrees can self-assemble into different crystals characterized by bond coordination z that varies from 3 to 6. Among these, we identify a transformable superisostatic structure with pgg symmetry and redundant bonds (z = 5). We show that this structure can support either soft bulk modes or soft edge modes depending on its Poisson's ratio, which can be tuned from positive to negative through a uniform soft deformation. We also prove that the bulk soft modes are associated with states of self-stress along the direction of zero strain during uniform soft deformation. The self-assembled transformable structures may act as mechanical metamaterials with potential applications in micromechanical engineering.

Direct Imaging of "Patch-Clasping" and Relaxation in Robust and Flexible Nanoparticle Assemblies

Polymer patching on inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) enables multifunctionality and directed self-assembly into nonclosely packed optical and mechanical metamaterials. However, experimental demonstration of such assemblies has been scant due to challenges in leveraging patch-induced NP-NP attractions and understanding NP self-assembly dynamics. Here we use low-dose liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy to visualize the dynamic behaviors of tip-patched triangular nanoprisms upon patch-clasping, where polymer patches interpenetrate to form cohesive bonds that connect NPs. Notably, these bonds are longitudinally robust but rotationally flexible. Patch-clasping is found to allow highly selective tip-tip assembly, interconversion between dimeric bowtie and sawtooth configurations, and collective structural relaxation of NP networks. The integration of single particle tracking, polymer physics theory, and molecular dynamics simulation reveals the macromolecular origin of patch-clasping-induced NP dynamics. Our experiment-computation integration can aid the design of stimuli-responsive nanomaterials, such as topological metamaterials for chiral sensors, waveguides, and nanoantennas.

Engineering Azeotropy to Optimize the Self-Assembly of Colloidal Mixtures

The goal of inverse self-assembly is to design interparticle interactions capable of assembling the units into a desired target structure. The effective assembly of complex structures often requires the use of multiple components, each new component increasing the thermodynamic degrees of freedom and, hence, the complexity of the self-assembly pathway. In this work we explore the possibility to use azeotropy, i.e., a special thermodynamic condition where the system behaves effectively as a one-component system, as a way to control the self-assembly of an arbitrary number of components. Exploiting the mass-balance equations, we show how to select patchy particle systems that exhibit azeotropic points along the desired self-assembly pathway. As an example we map the phase diagram of a binary mixture that, by design, fully assembles into cubic (and only cubic) diamond crystal via an azeotropic point. The ability to explicitly include azeotropic points in artificial designs reveals effective pathways for the self-assembly of complex structures.

Self-Assembling of Nonadditive Mixtures Containing Patchy Particles with Tunable Interactions

Mixtures of nanoparticles (NPs) with hybridizing grafted DNA or DNA-like strands have been of particular interest because of the tunable selectivity provided for the interactions between the NP components. A richer self-assembly behavior would be accessible if these NP-NP interactions could be designed to give nonadditive mixing (in analogy to the case of molecular components). Nonadditive mixing occurs when the mixed-state volume is smaller (negative) or larger (positive) than the sum of the individual components' volumes. However, instances of nonadditivity in colloidal/NP mixtures are rare, and systematic studies of such mixtures are nonexistent. This work focuses on patchy NPs whose patches (coarsely representing grafted hybridizing DNA strands) not only encode selectivity across components but also impart a tunable nonadditivity by varying their extent of protrusion. To guide the exploration of the relationship between phase behavior and nonadditivity for different patches' designs, the NP-NP potential of mean force (PMF) and a nonadditive parameter were first calculated. For one-patch NPs, different lamellar morphologies were predominantly observed. In contrast, for mixtures of two-patch NPs and (fully grafted) spherical particles, a rich phase behavior was found depending on patch-patch angle and degree of nonadditivity, resulting in phases such as the gyroid, cylinder, honeycomb, and two-layered crystal. Our results also show that both minimum positive nonadditivity and multivalent interactions are necessary for the formation of ordered network mesophases in the class of models studied.

Pursuing colloidal diamonds

The endeavor to selectively fabricate a cubic diamond is challenging due to the formation of competing phases such as its hexagonal polymorph or others possessing similar free energy. The necessity to achieve this is of paramount importance since the cubic diamond is the only polymorph exhibiting a complete photonic bandgap, making it a promising candidate in view of photonic applications. Herein, we demonstrate that due to the presence of an external field and delicate manipulation of its strength we can attain selectivity in the formation of a cubic diamond in a one-component system comprised of designer tetrahedral patchy particles. The driving force of such a phenomenon is the structure of the first adlayer which is commensurate with the (110) face of the cubic diamond. Moreover, after a successful nucleation event, once the external field is turned off, the structure remains stable, paving an avenue for further post-synthetic treatment.

Visualizing defect dynamics by assembling the colloidal graphene lattice

Graphene has been under intense scientific interest because of its remarkable optical, mechanical and electronic properties. Its honeycomb structure makes it an archetypical two-dimensional material exhibiting a photonic and phononic band gap with topologically protected states. Here, we assemble colloidal graphene, the analogue of atomic graphene using pseudo-trivalent patchy particles, allowing particle-scale insight into crystal growth and defect dynamics. We directly observe the formation and healing of common defects, like grain boundaries and vacancies using confocal microscopy. We identify a pentagonal defect motif that is kinetically favoured in the early stages of growth, and acts as seed for more extended defects in the later stages. We determine the conformational energy of the crystal from the bond saturation and bond angle distortions, and follow its evolution through the energy landscape upon defect rearrangement and healing. These direct observations reveal that the origins of the most common defects lie in the early stages of graphene assembly, where pentagons are kinetically favoured over the equilibrium hexagons of the honeycomb lattice, subsequently stabilized during further growth. Our results open the door to the assembly of complex 2D colloidal materials and investigation of their dynamical, mechanical and optical properties.

A simple solution to the problem of self-assembling cubic diamond crystals

The self-assembly of colloidal diamond (CD) crystals is considered as one of the most coveted goals of nanotechnology, both from the technological and fundamental points of view. For applications, colloidal diamond is a photonic crystal which can open new possibilities of manipulating light for information processing. From a fundamental point of view, its unique symmetry exacerbates a series of problems that are commonly faced during the self-assembly of target structures, such as the presence of kinetic traps and the formation of crystalline defects and alternative structures (polymorphs). Here we demonstrate that all these problems can be systematically addressed via SAT-assembly, a design framework that converts self-assembly into a Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT). Contrary to previous solutions (requiring four or more components), we prove that the assembly of the CD crystal only requires a binary mixture. Moreover, we use molecular dynamics simulations of a system composed by nearly a million nucleotides to test a DNA nanotechnology design that constitutes a promising candidate for experimental realization.

Modulating Functionality of Starch-Based Patchy Particles by Manipulating Architecture and Environmental Factors

Starch as a food-grade thickener has been commonly used in food products to modulate textural properties. Improving viscosity-enhancing ability, so as to be able to use less starch for the same texture, has been considered as an approach to reduce the dietary consumption of carbohydrates. We have positively charged amaranth starch (∼1 μm) and negatively charged corn starch (>10 μm) and physically fused the particles together to create a starch with a heterogeneous pattern. This starch has a negatively charged main body, due to the larger corn particles, and positively charged patches from the amaranth starch. These patchy particles self-assembled through electrostatic interactions into a shear-reversible thickener. The impact of patchiness and charge density on material functionality was investigated. The degree of patchiness was controlled by manipulating the ratio between the two starches, and results showed that viscosity was reduced when the patchiness was higher. With the same patchy area, a higher charge density did not contribute to higher water-holding capacity. The more charged particles were able to enhance the viscosity, however, due to the stronger interparticle electrostatic interaction. The effects of environmental factors including pH level and ionic strength were also investigated, and the results showed that at extreme pH levels, or in the presence of Na⁺ or Ca²⁺, the charges on the starch particles were screened, and this inhibited interaction and reduced viscosity. The present work demonstrates that the texture of starch slurries can be fine-tuned by manipulating the degree of patchiness and the charge density of patchy particles. It also evaluates the application potential in food products with different pH levels and ionic strengths.

Temperature- and pressure-dependence of the hydrogen bond network in plastic ice VII

We model, via classical molecular dynamics simulations, the plastic phase of ice VII across a wide range of the phase diagram of interest for planetary investigations. Although structural and dynamical properties of plastic ice VII are mostly independent on the thermodynamic conditions, the hydrogen bond network (HBN) acquires a diverse spectrum of topologies distinctly different from that of liquid water and of ice VII simulated at the same pressure. We observe that the HBN topology of plastic ice carries some degree of similarity with the crystal phase, stronger at thermodynamic conditions proximal to ice VII, and gradually lessening upon approaching the liquid state. Our results enrich our understanding of the properties of water at high pressure and high temperature, and may help in rationalizing the geology of

SAT-assembly: a new approach for designing self-assembling systems

We propose a general framework for solving inverse self-assembly problems, i.e. designing interactions between elementary units such that they assemble spontaneously into a predetermined structure. Our approach uses patchy particles as building blocks, where the different units bind at specific interaction sites (the patches), and we exploit the possibility of having mixtures with several components. The interaction rules between the patches is determined by transforming the combinatorial problem into a Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT) which searches for solutions where all bonds are formed in the target structure. Additional conditions, such as the non-satisfiability of competing structures (e.g. metastable states) can be imposed, allowing to effectively design the assembly path in order to avoid kinetic traps. We demonstrate this approach by designing and numerically simulating a cubic diamond structure from four particle species that assembles without competition from other polymorphs, including the hexagonal structure.

Colloidal cubic diamond photonic crystals through cooperative self-assembly

Colloidal cubic diamond crystals with low-coordinated and staggered structures could display a wide photonic bandgap at low refractive index contrasts, which makes them extremely valuable for photonic applications. However, self-assembly of cubic diamond crystals using simple colloidal building blocks is still considerably challenging, due to their low packing fraction and mechanical instability. Here we propose a new strategy for constructing colloidal cubic diamond crystals through cooperative self-assembly of surface-anisotropic triblock Janus colloids and isotropic colloidal spheres into superlattices. In self-assembly, cooperativity is achieved by tuning the interaction and particle size ratio of colloidal building blocks. The pyrochlore lattice formed by self-assembly of triblock Janus colloids acts as a soft template to direct the packing of colloidal spheres into cubic diamond lattices. Numerical simulations show that this cooperative self-assembly strategy works well in a large range of particle size ratio of these two species. Moreover, photonic band structure calculations reveal that the resulting cubic diamond lattices exhibit wide and complete photonic bandgaps and the width and frequency of the bandgaps can also be easily adjusted by tuning the particle size ratio. Our work will open up a promising avenue toward photonic bandgap materials by cooperative self-assembly employing surface-anisotropic Janus or patchy colloids as a soft template.
