Effect of using supplementation mineral or organic selenium with vitamin E as antioxidants in the flushing diet on the fertility of ewes

In this study, 44 Afshari ewes were investigated that were 1–4 years old with a mean weight of 54–51 kg, with a physical score of approximately three in four experimental groups. Ewes were randomly assigned into four experimental groups including Group A Control (base diet recipient), Group B (Flushing), Group C (Flushing + Vitamin E Supplement + Organic Selenium), and Group D (Flushing + Vitamin E Supplement + Mineral Selenium). Blood sampling was carried out at different intervals namely beginning of the course, 24 h prior to CIDR, 24 h after CIDR (estrus), and 21 days after mating (at the time of embryonic implantation). Blood serum hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and insulin) were measured. The results of this study showed improvement in reproductive efficiency, especially the percentage of lambing, the fertility rate in Afshari breed. The use of organic selenium supplement with vitamin E and mineral selenium with vitamin E in the flushing diet before mating increased the reproductive performance of Afshari breed sheep by increasing the number of reproductive hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and insulin). C and A treatment had the highest and lowest lambs, respectively with 14 and 10 progenies. The highest birth weight of lambs was related to C treatment with an average of 4.49 kg. The use of two Flashing factors and vitamin E and organic selenium supplementation significantly increased the estrus and fertility, and significantly reduce the non-pregnant ewes by controlling oxidative conditions and increasing sex hormones.

Maternal periconceptual nutrition, early pregnancy, and developmental outcomes in beef cattle

The focus of this review is maternal nutrition during the periconceptual period and offspring developmental outcomes in beef cattle, with an emphasis on the first 50 d of gestation, which represents the embryonic period. Animal agriculture in general, and specifically the beef cattle industry, currently faces immense challenges. The world needs to significantly increase its output of animal food products by 2050 and beyond to meet the food security and agricultural sustainability needs of the rapidly growing human population. Consequently, efficient and sustainable approaches to livestock production are essential. Maternal nutritional status is a major factor that leads to developmental programming of offspring outcomes. Developmental programming refers to the influence of pre-and postnatal factors, such as inappropriate maternal nutrition, that affect growth and development and result in long-term consequences for health and productivity of the offspring. In this review, we discuss recent studies in which we and others have addressed the questions, "Is development programmed periconceptually?" and, if so, "Does it matter practically to the offspring in production settings?" The reviewed studies have demonstrated that the periconceptual period is important not only for pregnancy establishment but also may be a critical period during which fetal, placental, and potentially postnatal development and function are programmed. The evidence for fetal and placental programming during the periconceptual period is strong and implies that research efforts to mitigate the negative and foster the positive benefits of developmental programming need to include robust investigative efforts during the periconceptual period to better understand the implications for life-long health and productivity.

Effects of feeding treatment on growth rates, metabolic profiles and age at puberty, and their relationships in dairy heifers

Puberty attainment in dairy heifers has been widely studied from a hormonal point of view, but few studies have focussed on puberty-blood profile relationships during growth. We led experiments to determine the effects of feeding treatments on growth parameters, age at puberty and plasma biochemical profiles, and the relationships between age at puberty and metabolic profiles at 6, 9, 12 and 15 months (mo) of age. Blood samples were collected from 67 Holstein heifers, born between September 2011 and February 2012, every 10 days from 5.5 mo of age until heifers were considered pubertal (plasma progesterone concentration greater than 1.0 ng/ml) or oestrus synchronisation (November 2012; 11 to 15 mo of age). Heifers born before 30 November were fed either a standard diet (SD, n=27) or an intensive-plane diet (ID1, n=27) from 0 to 6 mo of age. This strategy aimed to reach 190 to 200 kg (SD) or 220 to 230 kg (ID1) BW at 6 mo of age. All heifers born after 1 December received an intensive-plane diet (ID2, n=13) from birth until oestrus synchronisation, in order to reach a similar BW at first insemination as heifers born before 1 December. Only 56 heifers reached puberty before oestrus synchronisation, at an average age of 10.3±2.2 mo (6.2 to 14.4 mo) and a BW of 296±40 kg (224 to 369 kg). There was no difference among the three feeding treatments until 6 mo, but at 9, 12 and 15 mo of age, ID2 (n=11) heifers weighed 37, 52 and 30 kg more than SD (n=22) and ID1 (n=23) heifers (P<0.001), respectively. Glucose, non-esterified fatty acids, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and iron decreased with age, whereas β-hydroxybutyric acid, total cholesterol, creatinine, the creatinine : albumin ratio, alanine aminotransferase and chloride increased. The feeding treatment significantly affected creatinine, the creatinine : albumin ratio, and phosphorus and sodium levels, which were higher for ID2 heifers compared with SD and ID1. A logistic regression based on plasma metabolites at 6 mo of age to explain puberty attainment before or at 12 mo of age showed a positive relationship with plasma cholesterol (odds ratio=9.05). In conclusion, the feeding treatment had minor consequences on plasma metabolites, but it did affect growth performance.

Nutritional effects on foetal growth

The emphasis in nutritional studies on foetal growth has now moved from the last trimester of pregnancy, when most of the increase in foetal size takes place, to earlier stages of pregnancy that coincide with foetal organogenesis and tissue hyperplasia. At these stages absolute nutrient requirements for foetal growth are small but foetal metabolic activity and specific growth rate are high. It is thus a time when nutrient supply interacts with maternal factors such as size, body condition and degree of maturity to influence placental growth and set the subsequent pattern of nutrient partitioning between the gravid uterus and maternal body.

Throughout pregnancy the maternal diet controls foetal growth both directly, by supplying essential nutrients and indirectly, by altering the expression of the maternal and foetal endocrine mechanisms that regulate the uptake and utilization of these nutrients by the conceptus. Nutritional effects on the endocrine environment of the embryo during the early stages of cell division can alter the subsequent foetal growth trajectory and size at birth; so too can current in vitro systems for oocyte maturation and embryo culture up to the blastocyst stage. There is increasing evidence that subtle alterations in nutrient supply during critical periods of embryonic and foetal life can impart a legacy of growth and developmental changes that affect neonatal survival and adult performance. Identifying the specific nutrients that programme these effects and understanding their mode of action should provide new management strategies for ensuring that nutritional regimens from oocyte to newborn are such that they maximize neonatal viability and enable animals to express their true genetic potential for production.

Nutritional effects on reproductive performance of captive adult female coyotes (Canis latrans)

Interactions between animals and their environment are fundamental to ecological research. Field studies of coyote (Canis latrans) reproductive performance suggest mean litter size changes in response to prey abundance. However, this relationship has been assessed primarily by using carcasses collected from trappers. The objective of this study was to assess whether nutritional manipulation prior to mating affected reproduction in adult female coyotes. We examined the effects of caloric restriction during the 7 months prior to estrus on the reproductive rates of 11 captive female coyotes and the subsequent initial survival of pups through two reproductive cycles. This was a 2-year study with a cross-over design so each female was monitored for reproductive performance on each of the two diet treatments. We assessed the number of implantation scars, number of pups born, sex ratios of pups, average pup weight at birth and 2- and 6-weeks of age, and the survival rates between implantation and 2-weeks of age for two diet treatments. We found the mean number of implantation sites and pups whelped during a reproductive cycle was influenced by food-intake prior to conception. Additionally, we found evidence suggesting the effects of nutritional stress may persist for additional breeding cycles. We also provided evidence suggesting well-fed females tended to have more male pups. Understanding how environmental factors influence reproductive output may improve model predictions of coyote population dynamics.

Overfeeding and underfeeding have detrimental effects on oocyte quality measured by in vitro fertilization and early embryonic development in sheep

To determine effects of maternal diet on in vitro fertilization (IVF) and early embryonic development, ewes (n = 48) were divided into control, overfed (ad libitum feeding), and underfed (60% of control) nutritional planes for 8 wk before oocyte collection. Follicular development was induced by twice-daily injections of FSH on days 13 and 14 of the estrous cycle, and ovaries and blood samples were collected on day 15 of the estrous cycle. During the 8-wk experiment, for control ewes BW and BCS did not change, but for overfed ewes mean (± SEM) BW and BCS increased (11.8 ± 1.1 kg and 2.0 ± 0.1, respectively) and for underfed ewes decreased (14.2 ± 0.9 kg and 0.7 ± 0.1, respectively). The number of follicles was determined; oocytes were collected and subjected to in vitro maturation and fertilization. After IVF, developing embryos were evaluated throughout the 8-d culture period. The proportion of cleaved oocytes after IVF and developing morula and blastocyst were less (P < 0.0001) in overfed and underfed ewes than in control ewes. However, number of visible follicles, total number of oocytes, number of healthy oocytes, and percentage of healthy oocytes were similar for control, overfed, and underfed ewes. Serum insulin concentration was greater (P < 0.05) in overfed ewes than in underfed ewes, estradiol 17-β (E(2)) concentration was greater (P < 0.05) in underfed ewes than in overfed ewes, but triiodothyronine (T(3)) and thyroxine (T(4)) concentrations were similar in all treatment groups. These data show that inadequate feeding has a negative effect on oocyte quality which results in lower oocyte cleavage after IVF and morula and blastocyst formation; overfeeding increased serum insulin and underfeeding increased serum E(2) but not T(3) or T(4). These data emphasize the importance of diet for reproductive and metabolic functions. Furthermore, the mechanisms through which enhanced or decreased energy in diet affect oocyte quality and serum insulin and E(2) concentrations remain to be elucidated.

A general model for ontogenetic growth under food restriction

Food restriction (FR) retards animals' growth. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon is important to conceptual problems in life-history theory, as well as to applied problems in animal husbandry and biomedicine. Despite a considerable amount of empirical data published since the 1930s, there is no relevant general theoretical framework that predicts how animals vary their energy budgets and life-history traits under FR. In this paper, we develop such a general quantitative model based on fundamental principles of metabolic energy allocation during ontogeny. This model predicts growth curves under varying conditions of FR, such as the compensatory growth, different age at which FR begins, its degree and its duration. Our model gives a quantitative explanation for the counterintuitive phenomenon that under FR, lower body temperature and lower metabolism lead to faster growth and larger adult size. This model also predicts that the animals experiencing FR reach the same fraction of their adult mass at the same age as their ad libitum counterparts. All predictions are well supported by empirical data from mammals and birds of varying body size, under different conditions of FR.

Physiology and Endocrinology Symposium: Nutritional aspects of developing replacement heifers

Studies in numerous species provide evidence that diet during development can mediate physiological changes necessary for puberty. In cattle, several studies have reported inverse correlations between postweaning growth rate and age at puberty and heifer pregnancy rates. Thus, postweaning growth rate was determined to be an important factor affecting age of puberty, which in turn influences pregnancy rates. This and other research conducted during the late 1960s through the early 1980s indicated puberty occurs at a genetically predetermined size, and only when heifers reach their target BW can increased pregnancy rates be obtained. Guidelines were established indicating replacement heifers should achieve 60 to 65% of their expected mature BW by breeding. Traditional approaches for postweaning development of replacement heifers used during the last several decades have primarily focused on feeding heifers to achieve or exceed an appropriate target BW and thereby maximize heifer pregnancy rates. Intensive heifer development systems may maximize pregnancy rates, but not necessarily optimize profit or sustainability. Since inception of target BW guidelines, subsequent research demonstrated that the growth pattern heifers experience before achieving a critical target BW could be varied. Altering rate and timing of BW gain can result in compensatory growth periods, providing an opportunity to decrease feed costs. Recent research has demonstrated that feeding replacement heifers to traditional target BW increased development costs without improving reproduction or subsequent calf production relative to development systems in which heifers were developed to lighter target BW ranging from 50 to 57% of mature BW.

Effect of concentrate supplementation on performance, ovarian response, and some biochemical profile of Malpura ewes

Effect of feed flushing on ovulation rate was investigated during the autumn seasons on 24 adult Malpura ewes (BW 34.8 ± 0.58 kg and age 4-7 years) equally divided into two groups. Ewes in G1 (group 1) were grazed 8-10 h daily on Cenchrus ciliaris pasture interspersed with seasonal shrub. In addition to grazing, concentrate was provided at 1.5% of BW to the animals in G2 (group 2) for a period of 35 days. Estrus was synchronized by a double injection schedule of PGF(2α) at 0 and 10 days of the experiment and detected by parading aproned rams at 6 h intervals. Blood samples were collected at weekly interval during the estrous cycle. A rumen fermentation study was conducted on day 23 of the experiment at 0 and 4 h post-concentrate feeding. Ovarian responses in terms of number of corpora lutea and large follicles was examined on all the ewes by laparoscopy after 3 to 6 days of each estrus and were found to be similar in both the groups. Hemoglobin and packed cell volume, total protein, albumin, and globulin were similar among the groups. Concentration of plasma glucose (12 and 22 days) was higher (P < 0.05) in G2 vis-à-vis control. Plasma urea was higher (P < 0.01) in the control than G2. Rumen liquor pH, concentration of total N, TCA-ppt N, NH(3)-N, and TVFA were significantly higher (P < 0.01) in G2 than the control. Thus, it can be concluded that concentrate supplementation in ewes prior to mating (flushing) did not enhance ovulation response during the autumn season.

Heterozygous Inverdale ewes show increased ovulation rate sensitivity to pre-mating nutrition

This study aimed to determine whether ewes heterozygous (I+) for the Inverdale mutation of the bone morphogenetic protein-15 (BMP15) gene with high natural ovulation rate (OR) show similar sensitivity to nutritional manipulation as non-carriers (++). Increasing pre-mating nutrition results in OR increases in sheep, but whether this effect occurs in ewes with naturally high OR is unknown. Over 2 years, I+ or ++ ewes were given high (ad libitum) or control (maintenance) pasture allowances for 6 weeks prior to mating at a synchronised oestrus, with OR measured 8 days later. The high group increased in weight compared with controls (+5.84 kg; P < 0.01), accompanied by increased OR (+19%; P < 0.01). As well as having higher OR (+45%; P < 0.01), I+ ewes responded to increased feed with a larger proportional increase in OR (+27%; P < 0.01) compared with the response in ++ ewes (+11%; P < 0.05), suggesting an interaction between BMP15 levels and nutritional signals in the follicle to control OR. Although litter size increases only tended to significance (+12%; P = 0.06), extra feed resulted in over 50% of I+ ewes giving birth to more than three lambs, compared with 20–31% of I+ ewes on maintenance rations. This information can guide feed management of prolific Inverdale ewes prior to breeding.

Effect of body condition and energy utilization on the length of post-partum anoestrus in PRID-treated and untreated post-partum Bos indicus (Zebu) cattle

Forty-five Bos indicus (zebu) cows were blocked by body condition (BC) score at calving and allocated by body weight (BW) to three treatments: untreated controls (CON), and progesterone-releasing intra-vaginal device (PRID)-treated at either 45 (T45) or 60 days (T60) post partum. Cows were given food individually and blood-sampled three times a week for progesterone. Calves sucked twice a day and were weighed weekly. PRIDs resulted in only 21% of cows responding at 60 days and they did not reduce anoestrus (PPI) or calving interval (CI) (P > 0·05). Dry matter (DM) and metabolizable energy (ME) intake were 7·1 (s.e. 0·6) kg and 54·3 (s.e. 4·6) MJ/day, respectively. BC score and BW at calving, and ME intake influenced cow and calf average daily gain ranging from −580 to 625 and 331 to 868 g/day, respectively. Milk yield during the first 4 months was 507 (s.e. 97) l. Cows gained 25 kg per unit increase in condition but lost 50 kg for a unit decline. CI (mean 14·2, range 10 to 24 months) was inversely related to BC score at calving (r = −0·31) and was delayed by a long PPI (r = 0·51), ranging from 38 to 297 days. Most (95%) cows experienced one or more ‘silent ovulations’ before first oestrus, the number extending PPI length (r = 0·49, P < 0·001). Efficiency of ME utilization was higher for smaller cows of 240 (s.e. 28) kg at calving. It is concluded that: (1) PRID treatment before 60 days post partum is unlikely to reduce anoestrus in Boran zebu cattle; (2) given adequate energy intake zebu cattle in thin condition at calving initially replenish body reserves at the cost of lactation and experience more ‘silent’ ovarian activity before returning to oestrus; (3) cows in good condition at calving express maximum lactation potential, mobilizing their own body reserves to support milk production, yet resume oestrous activity earlier despite weight losses to support higher milk yields.

Effects of plane of nutrition on in vitro fertilization and early embryonic development in sheep1

Nutrition has been shown to influence several reproductive functions, including hormone production, oocyte competence and fertilization, and early embryonic development. To determine the effects of maternal diet on in vitro fertilization (IVF) and early embryonic development, ewes (n = 18; 47.0 +/- 1.5 kg of initial BW) were divided into control and underfed (60% of control) nutritional planes for 8 wk before oocyte collection. Pelleted diets containing 2.4 Mcal of ME/kg and 13% CP (DM basis) were fed once daily. During the first 4-wk acclimation phase, control and underfed ewes were fed 1,000 and 600 g/d, respectively. From wk 4 to 8, control (adequate) ewes were fed to maintain BW and offered 720 g/d, whereas underfed ewes received 432 g/d (60% restricted). Synchronization of estrus was performed using progestagen sponges for 14 d. Follicular development was induced by twice daily injections of FSH on d 13 (5 units/injection) and 14 (4 units/injection) of the estrous cycle. Oocytes were collected from all visible follicles on d 15 of the estrous cycle. After IVF, the proportion of developing embryos was evaluated throughout an 8-d culture period. Under-nutrition decreased (P < 0.006) the rate of cleavage, number of blastocysts per ewe, and rate of blastocyst formation (from 79 to 64%; from 3.3 to 0.8; and from 31 to 8%, respectively). However, the number of visible follicles, total number of oocytes, number of healthy oocytes, percentage of healthy oocytes, number of cleaved oocytes, and morula formation per ewe were similar for control and underfed ewes. These data indicate that undernutrition of donor ewes, resulting in lower BW and BCS, has a negative effect on oocyte quality, which results in lower rates of cleavage and blastocyst formation.

Energy balance and reproductive performance in rabbit does

The mortality and the culling rates of females are very high in rabbit breeding. In many cases, the dead or culled females show low reproductive performances and poor body conditions. Energy deficit leads to body mobilization and reduced reproductive performance. Consequently, energy balance and lifespan are closely linked. Two in vivo methods to estimate body composition were recently validated for rabbit does. Ultrasounds and TOBEC methods permitted the evaluation of the changes in energy balance and their relationship to reproductive performance of females. Influence of intrinsic (parity, litter size, genetic line, ...) and extrinsic (reproduction rhythm, temperature, ...) factors on the energetic balance of females are discussed. Energy deficit and depletion of body stores occurring during lactation lead to a decrease in reproductive performance and the physiological mechanisms implicated in these effects were presented. Interest and limitations of several strategies to reduce the body energy deficit in reproducing does and to improve their fertility and thus lifespan are discussed: rearing, feeding, management, genetic selection. A multi-facetted approach, combining these various strategies seems to be required to meet these objectives.

Body condition and suckling as factors influencing the duration of postpartum anestrus in cattle: a review

Prolonged postpartum anestrus is a main factor limiting reproductive efficiency in cattle, particularly in Bos indicus and Bos taurus/Bos indicus cows from tropical regions, because it prevents achievement of a 12 month calving interval. During anestrus, ovulation does not occur despite ovarian follicular development, because growing follicles do not mature. Although many factors affect postpartum anestrus, nutrition and suckling are the major factors influencing the resumption of postpartum ovarian cycles, as they affect hypothalamic, pituitary and ovarian activity and thus inhibit follicular development. Under-nutrition contributes to prolonged postpartum anestrus, particularly among cows dependent upon forages to meet their feed requirements and it apparently interacts with genetic, environmental or management factors to influence the duration of anestrus. The nutritional status or balance of an animal is evaluated through body condition score (BCS), as it reflects the body energy reserves available for metabolism, growth, lactation and activity. There is a converse relationship between energy balance and time to resumption of postpartum ovarian activity; inadequate nutrient intake results in loss of weight and BCS and finally cessation of estrous cycles. Suckling interferes with hypothalamic release of GnRH, provoking a marked suppression in pulsatile LH release, resulting in extended postpartum anestrus. The effects of suckling on regulation of tonic LH release are determined by the ability of the cow to identify a calf as her own or as unrelated. Vision and olfaction play critical roles in the development of the maternal-offspring bond, allowing the cow to identify her own calf, and abolition of both senses attenuates the negative effects of suckling on LH secretion. Thus, the maternal-offspring bond is essential for prolonged postpartum suckling-induced anovulation, and the suppressive influence of suckling is independent of neurosensory pathways within the teat or udder.

Effects of short-term high carbohydrate or fat intakes on leptin, growth hormone and luteinizing hormone secretions in prepubertal fat-tailed Tuj lambs

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of high carbohydrate or fat diets, fed for 15 days at the end of breeding season, on leptin, GH and LH secretions in prepubertal fat-tailed Tuj lambs. For that purpose, 9-month-old ram-lambs were divided into three groups as control group (fed with basal ration, n = 4), high carbohydrate (HC) group, basal ration plus barley, n = 4), or high fat (HF) group (basal ration plus by-pass fat, n = 4). For the measurement of leptin and GH, blood plasma samples were collected on days 1, 4, 9 and 14 of the experiment. For the measurement of LH pulse frequency, serial blood samples were collected every 15 min for 6 h on day 14. Lambs were weighed and body condition scored (BCS) on days 1 and 15. Body weight and BCS increased towards the end of the study (p < 0.05). The BCS was higher in high energy groups at the end of the experiment (p < 0.05). Diet affected plasma leptin concentrations (p = 0.002) but time did not. The GH concentrations were not affected by diet or time. The LH pulse frequency appeared to be higher in HC and HF groups but there were no statistical difference between the groups. There was a significant positive relationship between overall BCS and corresponding leptin concentrations (R2 = 0.263; p = 0.010) and between LH pulse frequency and leptin concentrations (R2 = 0.594; p = 0.003). In conclusion, the present study suggests that rather than type of energy, amount of energy intake and body energy reserves are much important regulators of plasma leptin concentrations and LH pulse frequency in fat-tailed Tuj lambs.

Behavioural development in the neonatal lamb: effect of maternal and birth-related factors

The survival of the neonate relies on the integrated expression of appropriate behaviours from both the mother and young. In precocious species, like the sheep, the speed with which the lamb stands and seeks the udder is related to lamb survival. In this study the effects of birth difficulty, lamb birth weight, ewe loss or gain in backfat from conception to delivery, ewe parity, litter size, and lamb sex on neonatal lamb behavioural development were investigated in over 500 lambs of two breeds (Scottish Blackface and Suffolk). Lambs that required assistance to be delivered were significantly slower to perform all neonatal behaviours than unassisted lambs (P<0.001), and were less active over the first 3 days after delivery (P<0.05). There were no effects of lamb birthweight that were not accounted for by the increased likelihood of requiring assistance in heavier birth weight lambs. Ewes that mobilised less body fat during their pregnancy produced lambs that stood and sucked quickly (P<0.001), and were more active over the first 3 days of life. Lambs born to first parity ewes were slower to stand and suck than lambs born to experienced ewes (P<0.001). There was an improvement in time taken by lambs to stand, seek the udder and to suck with each increase in ewe parity. Litter size had an additional retarding influence on the behaviour of multiple-born lambs that could not be accounted for by birthweight. In the Suffolk breed male lambs were slower to stand and suck than female lambs, this effect was not seen in Blackface lambs. These data demonstrate that lambs that require assistance at birth, even if they survive the birth process, lambs born to ewes that lose a lot of condition over pregnancy or first parity ewes, triplet lambs and, at least in some breeds, male lambs are slower to progress through the sequence of neonatal behaviours. These lambs are, therefore, at greater risk of not surviving to weaning.

Effects of palm oil on lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, and vitamin A levels in the corpus uteri, cornu uteri and corpus luteum of young and adult female sheep

The aim of the current study was to determine whether a rumen protected palm oil based diet affect malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), reduced glutathione (rGSH) and vitamin A levels in the tissues of cornu uteri, corpus uteri and corpus luteum over the barley based isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diet, and whether the response is different between ewes and ewe-lambs. During the breeding season, half of Morkaraman ewes (2-4-year-old, n = 10) and ewe-lambs (7-8-months-old, n = 10) was offered a barley based diet and the other half was offered a protected palm oil based diet for 42 +/- 0.7 days. At the end of the experiment all animals were slaughtered and measurements carried out in the tissues collected. In all animals tested, cornu uteri had the highest MDA levels followed by corpus uteri and corpus luteum (P < 0.01) but no differences were between the tissues observed in GSH-Px and rGSH levels (P > 0.05). Vitamin A levels were, however, higher in corpus luteum than in cornu uteri and corpus uteri (P < 0.05). Corpus uteri MDA levels were not different (P > 0.05) but rGSH levels were higher for the palm oil fed groups (P < 0.05). GSH-Px and rGSH levels were higher for ewe-lambs than ewes (P < 0.05). In conclusion, it appears that MDA, rGSH, GSH-Px, and vitamin A work in a different fashion for corpus uteri, cornu uteri and corpus luteum, and for ewes and ewe-lambs. Dietary palm oil did not significantly affect the parameters studied except higher rGSH levels in corpus uteri. Levels of antioxidatively active substances, such as rGSH and GSH-Px were lower in ewes compared with those in ewe-lambs.

Effect of pre- and post-partum feed supplementation on the productive and reproductive performance of grazing primiparous Brahman cows

This experiment studied the combined effect of pre- and post-calving feed supplementation on the productive and reproductive performance of primiparous Brahman cows. The animals were 4 years old (420 kg live weight) and pregnant, and grazed rotationally on Stargrass (Cynodon nlemfuensis) pastures. Supplementation was given before and after (T1, n = 15), only before (T2, n = 15) or only after (T3, n = 16) calving, and there was an unsupplemented control (T4, n = 16). The supplement (1.5 kg/animal per day, 13.4 MJ digestible energy/kg dry matter and 20% crude protein) was given for 45 days before and/or after calving. Changes in body weight and body condition score and the productive behaviour of the calves were similar (p > 0.05) among treatments. The concentration of urea in the plasma was low in the control group (T4) before and after calving. The animals in all the groups had a poor reproductive performance. The percentage of cows in oestrus was higher (p < 0.05) in T1 (73.3%) than in T3 (37.5%). The interval from calving to conception (148.7 +/- 53.7 days) and the pregnancy rate (48.5%) were similar (p > 0.05) among the treatments. The level of supplementation offered before and/or after calving did not improve the pregnancy rate.

Effect of Dietary Energy and Protein on Bovine Follicular Dynamics and Embryo Production In Vitro: Associations with the Ovarian Insulin-Like Growth Factor System1

Heifers were assigned either low or high (HE) levels of energy intake and low or high concentrations of dietary crude protein. The effect of these diets on the plasma concentrations of insulin, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, and urea on follicular growth and early embryo development is described. We propose that the observed dietary-induced changes in the ovarian IGF system increase bioavailability of intrafollicular IGF, thus increasing the sensitivity of follicles to FSH. These changes, in combination with increased peripheral concentrations of insulin and IGF-I in heifers offered the HE diet, contribute to the observed increase in growth rate of the dominant follicle. In contrast to follicular growth, increased nutrient supply decreased oocyte quality, due in part to increased plasma urea concentrations. Clearly a number of mechanisms are involved in mediating the effects of dietary energy and protein on ovarian function, and the formulation of diets designed to optimize cattle fertility must consider the divergent effects of nutrient supply on follicular growth and oocyte quality.

Reproduction and mortality in a colony of captive greater cane rats, Thryonomys swinderianus, Temminck

The reproductive performance and mortalities in a colony of captive greater cane rats, Thryonomys swinderianus, were monitored from 1992 to 1998 at the Grasscutter Domestication Centre, Achimota, Ghana. The animals were kept in cages and exposed to constant lighting from a 100 W electric light bulb during the night. The diet consisted mainly of freshly cut Panicum maximum (guinea grass) fed ad libitum, with occasional supplements of cassava and cane sugar. The results indicate that the mean litter size and litter weight were 2.9 +/- 0.51 and 439.4 +/- 81.23 g, respectively. These figures are low compared to those reported elsewhere. However, the mean birth weight was 151.2 +/- 11.08 g, higher by 12% than previously reported values. It is considered that poor nutrition, excessive exposure to light and stress were responsible for the relatively poor reproductive performance reported in these animals. The main causes of death were traumatic injuries (32%) and pulmonary congestion (16%).

The efficacy of the vaginal plug formation after mating for pregnancy diagnosis, and embyonic resorption in utero in the greater cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus, Temminck)

The efficacy of the detection of vaginal plug formation after mating for pregnancy diagnosis, and the degree of embryonic resorption were studied in 67 wild greater cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus) at Esiam in the Ekumfi District, Ghana, over a period of 3 months. Vaginal plug formation was first observed on day 59 of gestation, and could be used for pregnancy diagnosis on or after that date. However, the vaginal orifice subsequently opened a couple of times prior to day 105 of gestation and further checks for pregnancy after day 59 of gestation are suggested. Animals with unplugged vaginas 105 days after mating could, however, be considered as not pregnant. The mean (+/- SE) number of implantation sites and litter size in the greater cane rat were 7.2 +/- 0.18 and 3.4 +/- 0.29, respectively, the embryonic resorption rate being 42.7 +/- 6.66%. The significant positive correlation between the number of implanted embryos and the bled-out carcase weight suggests a positive role of maternal nutrition in increasing the litter size in the greater cane rat. The incidence of post-partum oestrus during the study period was 42.1%, which suggests that the greater cane rat can be re-bred immediately after parturition.
