Abstract
Horses are herbivores, and their hindgut functions as a fluid reservoir as forage fibre properties have great impact on the water content of digesta and the milieu in the ecosystem. Our objective was to compare the effect of grass fibre maturity and legume forage on the water-holding capacity (WHC) and viscosity of the equine hindgut and the body weight (BW) and fluid balance of horses. Three diets: concentrate and late harvested grass haylage (35:65 energy ratio) (C); early and late harvested grass haylage (80:20) (G); lucerne and late harvested grass haylage (80:20) (L) were fed to six caecum and colon fistulated horses for 28 days in a Latin-square design. Total water intake and BW were higher when the horses were fed Diet L, but the digesta WHC was higher when fed Diet G. Total water excretion (via faeces + urine) and the difference in total water intake-output was higher when fed Diet L. Viscosity, measured on centrifuged digesta fluid, did not differ between diets, but the individual colon data of one horse were higher. In conclusion, early harvested forage might be beneficial for the fluid balance of athletic horses providing a higher WHC of hindgut digesta without increasing BW. The importance of digesta viscosity in relation to equine diets needs further investigations.

Abstract
The use of alternative, often bulky ingredients is becoming widespread in poultry diets as the industry seeks to reduce its economic and environmental costs. Consequently, there is an increased need to accurately predict the performance of birds given such diets and identify their maximum capacity for bulk. We offered diets diluted with a range of bulky ingredients to male Ross 308 broilers to assess their capacity for bulk and identify a bulk characteristic responsible for limiting intake. Four hundred ninety-five day-old broilers allocated into 45 pens, were offered a common starter diet until day (d) 7, and 1 of 9 grower diets from d 8 to 29 (Period 1). Each of the grower diets was diluted with either 30 or 60% of oat hulls (OH), wheat bran (WB), or grass meal (GM), or a mixture of 2 bulky ingredients at an inclusion level of 30% each (OHWB, OHGM, WBGM). From d 29 to 43 (Period 2), all birds were offered the bulkiest diet (GM60). A number of bulk characteristics were measured on the diets. Feed intake was measured daily, and birds were dissected on d 29 and 43 for organ and carcass measurements. During d 8 to 14 diet water-holding capacity (WHC) was more consistent in predicting feed intake when scaled per unit of body weight than any other bulk characteristic. However, this was no longer the case during d 15 to 28. In Period 2, the response and adaptation to the bulkiest diet was determined by previous experience to bulk. Birds offered a bulkier diet during Period 1, were better able to adapt the size of their digestive organs and increase scaled feed intake, such that there were no differences between these birds and those offered the GM60; the converse was the case for birds on the least bulky diets. We conclude that WHC is able to predict maximum intake on bulky diets in unadapted birds. Adaptation to bulky diets can be very fast, so that their high bulk content no longer limits feed intake and performance.

Abstract
Investigations involving human faeces and faecal sludge are of great importance for urban sanitation, such as operation and maintenance of sewer systems, or implementation of faecal sludge management. However, working with real faecal matter is difficult as it not only involves working with a pathogenic, malodorous material but also individual faeces and faecal sludge samples are highly variable, making it difficult to execute repeatable experiments. Synthetic faeces and faecal sludge can provide consistently reproducible substrate and alleviate these challenges. A critical literature review of simulants developed for various wastewater and faecal sludge related research is provided. Most individual studies sought to develop a simulant representative of specific physical, chemical, or thermal properties depending on their research objectives. Based on the review, a suitable simulant can be chosen and used or further developed according to the research needs. As an example, the authors present such a modification for the development of a simulant that can be used for investigating the motion (movement, settling and sedimentation) of faeces and their physical and biological disintegration in sewers and in on-site sanitation systems.

Abstract
The safe disposal of human excreta is of paramount importance for the health and welfare of populations living in low income countries as well as the prevention of pollution to the surrounding environment. On-site sanitation (OSS) systems are the most numerous means of treating excreta in low income countries, these facilities aim at treating human waste at source and can provide a hygienic and affordable method of waste disposal. However, current OSS systems need improvement and require further research and development. Development of OSS facilities that treat excreta at, or close to, its source require knowledge of the waste stream entering the system. Data regarding the generation rate and the chemical and physical composition of fresh feces and urine was collected from the medical literature as well as the treatability sector. The data were summarized and statistical analysis was used to quantify the major factors that were a significant cause of variability. The impact of this data on biological processes, thermal processes, physical separators, and chemical processes was then assessed. Results showed that the median fecal wet mass production was 128 g/cap/day, with a median dry mass of 29 g/cap/day. Fecal output in healthy individuals was 1.20 defecations per 24 hr period and the main factor affecting fecal mass was the fiber intake of the population. Fecal wet mass values were increased by a factor of 2 in low income countries (high fiber intakes) in comparison to values found in high income countries (low fiber intakes). Feces had a median pH of 6.64 and were composed of 74.6% water. Bacterial biomass is the major component (25-54% of dry solids) of the organic fraction of the feces. Undigested carbohydrate, fiber, protein, and fat comprise the remainder and the amounts depend on diet and diarrhea prevalence in the population. The inorganic component of the feces is primarily undigested dietary elements that also depend on dietary supply. Median urine generation rates were 1.42 L/cap/day with a dry solids content of 59 g/cap/day. Variation in the volume and composition of urine is caused by differences in physical exertion, environmental conditions, as well as water, salt, and high protein intakes. Urine has a pH 6.2 and contains the largest fractions of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium released from the body. The urinary excretion of nitrogen was significant (10.98 g/cap/day) with urea the most predominant constituent making up over 50% of total organic solids. The dietary intake of food and fluid is the major cause of variation in both the fecal and urine composition and these variables should always be considered if the generation rate, physical, and chemical composition of feces and urine is to be accurately predicted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Grapes are one of the world's staple fruit crops, with about 80% of the yield being utilised for winemaking. Since grape by-products still contain large amounts of secondary metabolites, uses other than as fertilisers might be appropriate. In this study, white grape pomace (WGP) was incorporated in wheat flour at levels of 10, 20 and 30% (w/w) to investigate its influence on rheological, nutraceutical, physical and sensory properties. RESULTS Farinograph characteristics of dough with different levels of WGP showed a decrease in water absorption from 56.4% (0% WGP) to 45.9% (30% WGP). Addition of WGP reduced hardness and caused a deterioration in brightness and yellowness of all enriched samples. The smallest addition of WGP (10%) caused an approximately 88% increase in total dietary fibre content as compared with the control. The content of phenolic compounds increased from 0.11 mg g⁻¹ with 0% WGP to 1.07 mg g⁻¹ with 30% WGP. The most stable phenols were as follows: γ-resorcylic acid < gallic acid < tyrosol < catechin < isovanilic acid. An assay of radical-scavenging activity showed that WGP addition greatly enhanced the antioxidant properties of biscuits. Acceptable biscuits were obtained when incorporating 10% WGP. CONCLUSION WGP might be utilised for the novel formulation of biscuits as an alternative source of dietary fibre and phenols.

Abstract
AbstractAn experiment was carried out to investigate the proposal that the voluntary food intake of pigs, when given foods based on bulky materials, can be accurately predicted from the water-holding capacity (WHC, g water per g dry food) values of the foods. A basal food (B), with 12·9 MJ digestible energy and 249 g crude protein per kg dry matter, was diluted to two extents by either sugar-beet pulp (S), grass meal (G) or soya hulls (H). The contents of the bulky materials in the total diets were either 320 g/kg (foods BS, BG and BH) or 800 g/kg (foods S, G and H). Each of these six foods was givenad libitumto six pigs in period I, which lasted for 21 days, with a further four given B. In period II, which lasted for 14 days and followed period I immediately, the pigs were also given their food ad libitum. Only the 36 pigs from the six ‘bulky“treatments (i.e. on treatments other than B) continued in a change-over design. Two pigs from each of the six ‘bulky’ treatments were allocated to the three foods of the same level of dilution (e.g. the six pigs from BS were changed to BS, BG and BH). Of the ‘bulk’ characteristics measured (crude fibre, acid-detergent fibre, neutral-detergent fibre, apparent digestibility of the organic matter, density and WHC) only WHC accounted sufficiently for the effects of the foods on the voluntary food intake of the pigs. The two methods of centrifugation and filtration that were used for the WHC determination were very highly correlated (r = 0·978), with food B having the lowest value, 3·86 g water per g dry food, and food S having the highest value, 8·48 g water per g dry food, when measured by centrifugation. In both periods the rate of intake was calculated as g/kg live weight per day, scaled intake (SFI). Live-weight gain and food conversion efficiency both decreased significantly (P< 0·001) as B was diluted with S, G and H. For the six ‘bulky’ feeding treatments SFI in the last 14 days of period I was proportional to the reciprocal of the WHC of the foods: SFI (g/kg per day) = 235 (s.e. 6·3). No effects of previous feeding treatment on site were observed in period II as a whole; however, intake initially increased when the food had lower WHC than the one previously offered and decreased when it had higher WHC. It was concluded that: (a) the WHC of a food is a sufficient descriptor of its ‘bulk’ and that it accounts for the effects on the voluntary food intake of pigs; (b) the detailed methods used for measuring WHC need to be standardized; (c) pigs can adapt more rapidly to bulky foods when they have had prior experience of such foods; (d) the length of time needed to observe an intake, which will be characteristic of the bulky food on offer, depends on the prior experience of the pig.

Abstract
A comprehensive review is given on pectin effects in pigs. Its effects on feed passage and digestion in the small intestine, the composition of ileal digesta and fermentation in the colon are described. Pectins promote fermentation at the terminal ileum and in the first part of the colon. It is shown, that pectin opposite to cellulose is degraded to high extents in the colon. Dietetic effects in relation to composition of ileocaecal digesta, endogenous secretions, buffering and pH-stability, high fermentability of organic matter in the colon and resulting volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the cranial part of the colon and even its possible interactions to colonization of the gut by infectious bacteria are described. Pectin effects concerning volume of the intestinal tract, distribution of VFA and lactic acid, role of endogenous secretions are described. The negative effect of pectins on praecaecal digestibility, their high degradation rates in the large intestine and consequences for their dietetic effects are discussed.

Abstract
Two experiments were carried out to investigate the capacities of pigs for bulky feeds. In Expt 1 fifteen pigs were offered, from 12 to 25 kg live weight, ad lib. access to one of five feeds which were made by progressively diluting a high-quality feed with wheat bran. Intake initially increased, and then declined, as the proportion of wheat bran was increased. The pigs became better able to accommodate to the more bulky feeds over time. In Expt 2 thirty-six pigs, initially of 12 kg live weight, were used. The feeds were the same high-quality basal feed as in Expt 1 and three others made almost entirely of either wheat bran, dried grass or dried citrus pulp, respectively. The equal-parts mixtures of each of these three bulky feeds with the basal feed were also made to give three series of feeds each comprising the basal, the mixture and the bulky feed. The three feeds in each series were given ad lib. to twelve pigs in a design of two replicated Latin squares with three time-periods. Within each series, and across periods, the intakes of the feeds that were limiting intake were directly proportional to live weight and so a scaled intake, expressed as g/kg live weight per d, was calculated. Across the six limiting feeds, scaled intakes in the final 5 d of each period, when the pigs were in equilibrium with their feeds, were directly proportional to the reciprocal of the water-holding capacities (WHC) of the feeds, as measured by a centrifugation method. There were large effects of feed changes on intake, in the short term, with previous experience of a bulky feed leading to higher intakes of another bulky feed. The intake of the basal feed was not affected by the feed given previously. It was concluded that: (a) the time of adaptation to bulky feeds needs to be considered when attempting to measure, or predict, the rates of intake on different bulky feeds and, (b) the WHC of the feeds could be an appropriate measurement of 'bulk' responsible for limiting their intake, and could be used to predict the maximum feed intake capacity of pigs on different bulky feeds.

Abstract
The fibre content of a basal diet fed to laying hens was increased from 149.2 g to between 218.6 and 292.3 g/kg by the inclusion of various fibrous farm wastes and by-products at 200 g/kg diet. The fibrous ingredients lowered the metabolisable energy (ME) of the basal diet from 11.82 to between 9.31 and 11.21 MJ/kg. Utilisation (g food/kg egg) of the basal diet was not significantly different from values for diets containing maize cob, cassava or maize starch residues. The diet containing maize cob supported a performance similar to that of the basal diet, despite a lower energy content (10.08 MJ/kg). Diets containing cowpea shell, cassava peel or sawdust, with lower energy contents, and those containing maize starch residue, palm kernel meal or dried brewers grains, with higher energy contents, were not as good. The diet containing cassava starch residue supported similar egg production to the basal but egg size was less. Inclusion of some of the fibre sources caused slight decreases in yolk cholesterol, although this could not be correlated with dietary fibre content. Additional dietary fibre caused slight increases in gizzard weight but this was also not simply related to dietary fibre content.

Abstract
Broiler chicks were fed a corn-soybean meal diet or a corn-soybean meal diet containing either 15% rice bran, 15% wheat bran, 15% alfalfa meal, 10% cellulose, or 10% cottonseed hulls. All diets contained 3190 kcal/kg of metabolizable energy, 22.8% protein, and either 1.0% calcium and .5% nonphytate phosphorus (Pnp) or .85% calcium and .42% Pnp. The diets were fed for 3 weeks at which time a digestion trial was conducted to determine the amount of phytate hydrolyzed. Chicks consuming diets containing the lower levels of calcium and Pnp hydrolyzed more phytate than those fed the higher levels of calcium and Pnp except when the diet contained rice bran. Less phytate was hydrolyzed in the rice bran diet at the lower calcium and Pnp levels. Phytate hydrolysis was not affected by wheat bran but was reduced by cottonseed hulls. At the lower levels of calcium and Pnp, alfalfa meal and cellulose significantly increased phytate hydrolysis by chicks. The hydrolysis of phytate was influenced more by calcium and by source than by fiber or by level of phytate fed.

Abstract
Transit time of digesta, faecal volatile fatty acids (VFA) excretion and faecal output were measured in four pigs (initially of 90 kg live weight) fitted with chronic catheters inserted into the caecum. Each pig was given a basal milk diet (20 g/kg live weight per d) for 30 d and then received successively four further treatments: the basal diet with bran (100 g/d), the bran-supplemented diet with a daily administration of neomycin (100 mg/kg orally and 100 mg/kg intracaecally), the basal diet with continuous intracaecal infusion of either saline (9 g sodium chloride/l) or with VFA solution (100 mM/h) at the same rate. The mean retention time of the polyvinyl chloride marker was reduced from 98.6 h on the milk diet to 64.3 h on the milk + bran diet. This transit time was not significantly modified by neomycin treatment. Daily faecal excretion of VFA was significantly affected by the diet: the addition of bran induced a 167% increase from the milk diet; neomycin treatment reduced VFA excretion with the bran-supplemented diet from 11.3 mM/d to 6.3 mM/d whereas during VFA infusion, excretion levels were twice those of the basal diet. Infusion of VFA solution on the milk diet induced an 11% increase in transit time, without any change in faecal output and dry matter. In conclusion, it is suggested that the decrease in transit time associated with bran supplementation is mediated by direct mechanical factors rather than fermentation products, including VFA.

Abstract
1. Three series of nitrogen balance experiments were performed with growing rats to test the effect of type and level of protein, fibre and starch on N excretion patterns. The design involved eighteen treatments in a 3 X 3 X 2 factorial experiment with five rats per dietary treatment. The eighteen treatments resulted from a combination of three protein treatments, three fibre treatments and two starch treatments. Protein treatments consisted of one level (15 g N/kg DM) of casein fortified with methionine, a protein of high digestibility, and two levels (15 and 20 g N/kg DM) of autoclaved brown beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), a protein source of low digestibility. The fibre treatments were two levels of cellulose powder and one level of barley hulls. The two starch treatments were autoclaved potato starch and autoclaved and raw potato starch (1:1, w/w). 2. The inclusion of raw potato starch reduced true protein digestibility markedly when the protein source was casein, but the corresponding biological values were increased significantly with this treatment. This strongly indicated a movement of urea from the blood to the intestines. This assumption was also supported by significantly lower blood urea concentrations in animals given raw starch. The influence of raw starch on true protein digestibility was, however, significantly less when cellulose and barley hulls were included. This is probably due to reduced transit time from fibre inclusion. The nature of the gut contents also supported this hypothesis. 3. The inclusion of raw potato starch when brown beans were the source of protein had much less effect on true protein digestibility and biological value than when casein was the protein source. This was probably due to the low digestibility of DM and protein in this food leaving sufficient energy and protein for maximum microbial growth. The inclusion of fibre also had little effect on N excretion patterns with the brown-bean diets. 4. An increase in the level of brown bean inclusion reduced true protein digestibility only on the diets containing raw starch whereas the biological value was consistently reduced regardless of starch treatment. The lower biological values were associated with significantly higher blood urea concentrations. Increasing the level of brown bean inclusion also resulted in higher fresh weights of caecum, colon and contents. 5. The present work proves that, through dietary manipulation, it is possible to affect nitrogen excretion patterns in rats.

Abstract
The in vitro water-holding properties of 17 dietary fibre preparations, mainly food materials, bulk laxatives, and gel-forming polysaccharides, have been measured. Water uptake was measured by a centrifugation technique and also by a new method using sacs of dialysis tubing containing the material, immersed in simulated gut contents. The centrifugation technique could not be applied to gel-forming polysaccharides but the methods gave broadly similar results for other materials (r=0.85). The gel-forming polysaccharides in general held more water than the food fibres. Studies of matched pairs of materials which differed only slightly in chemical composition suggested that the presence of charged groups on the molecule encouraged water uptake. In the food materials water uptake was related to uronic acid content (r=0.87). Materials ground to a smaller particle size increase their water holding but this effect was small (+28%). The hypothesis that dietary fibre increases faecal bulk by virtue of its ability to hold water was tested by comparing the in vitro water-holding capacity of eight of the fibres with the changes they had produced when fed to human volunteers under controlled conditions. Of these materials pectin had the greatest water-holding capacity (56.2 g water/g material) but produced the smallest change in faecal weight (19%), while bran had the lowest water-holding (4.2 g/g) and the largest faecal weight changes (117%). Overall an inverse relationship (r=0.88) between water-holding and faecal bulking was found, suggesting that dietary fibre does not exert its effect on faecal weight simply by retaining water in the gut.

Abstract
1. Groups of chicks were given a low-residue diet with or without supplements of dietary fibre in the form of wheat bran, wheat straw or bagasse. Growth and food conversion efficiency (g weight gained/g food eaten; FCE) during the first 4 weeks of life were measured. 2. In every one of seven experiments supplementation of the diet with 100 g wheat bran/kg resulted in improved growth, and in three experiments FCE was also increased. 3. Supplementation with coarsely-milled wheat straw to provide an amount of unavailable carbohydrate equivalent to that in the bran diet resulted in poorer growth; finely-milled wheat straw had little effect on growth. 4. The growth-promoting effect of bran was destroyed by sterilization with heat or gamma-radiation. 5. In some experiments weights, lengths and volumes of small intestines were measured. Differences in intestinal dimensions between birds given the diet with and without fibre were not consistent, nor were they correlated with growth rate or FCE. 6. Histometric observations on small intestines from a few birds indicated that those given coarse wheat straw had longer vili and thicker muscularis layers, and the caecal tonsils had a greater area of lymphoid tissue and more follicles.

Abstract
The addition of 15g of sterculia bulk (Inolaxol) to the daily food patients with ileostomy increased the viscosity of the stomal output by roughly 100%. The clinical result of this change was beneficial in 9 out of 12 patients in terms of diminished bandaging difficulties. Adding bulk to the diet of patients with ileostomy may thus facilitate the management of the stoma by increasing the viscosity of the output.

Abstract
59 outpatients with irritable bowel syndrome participated in a randomised double-blind trial. The patients in the treatment group received three biscuits daily each containing 10 g of ordinary miller's bran, whereas the patients in the control group received wheat biscuits of a similar appearance. The treatment period was 6 weeks. 52% of the patients in the treatment group noted subjective improvement compared with 65% in the control group. The results of this trial do not support the routine use of miller's bran in irritable bowel syndrome.
