Abstract
OBJECTIVE Since the aetiologies of cheilitis are broad and overlapping, the purpose of this cross-sectional clinical study was to examine the multiple factors involved in aetiology and the disease's clinical features. SUBJECTS AND METHODS We analysed cheilitis prevalence, demography, clinical features, patients' habits, psychological stress, systemic diseases, vitamin B9, B12 and iron serum levels and allergy test results in a total of 130 subjects with cheilitis, plus 22 healthy subjects. RESULTS The most common cheilitis types were: cheilitis simplex and eczematous cheilitis (28.5%); herpetic cheilitis (16.9%); and exfoliative and angular cheilitis (7.7%). Concerning bad habits, there was a significant association/connection between self-reported saliva at the corners of the mouth and angular cheilitis, and between lip licking/biting and exfoliative cheilitis. Common associated conditions were skin diseases (56.5%) and atopy (84%). Vitamin B9 and B12 serum and iron values were mostly within the normal reference range. The patients suffering from herpetic cheilitis had significantly higher psychological/mental stress levels than the control group. CONCLUSION To our knowledge, this is the first study of cheilitis patients that has simultaneously analysed aetiological factors, characteristics of the disease and diagnostic parameters.

Cytotoxic effects of different detergent containing children's toothpastes on human gingival epithelial cells. BMC Oral Health 2022; 22:66. Abstract
Background This study aimed to evaluate possible cytotoxic effects to gingival epithelial cells exposed to children toothpastes containing different detergent. Methods Tissues required for the isolation of human gingival epithelial cells were obtained by biopsy during the extraction of the impacted third molar tooth. Toothpaste solutions of different concentrations were prepared from five different children’s toothpastes with different detergent contents. Isolated gingival epithelial cells were stimulated with experimental groups consisting of toothpaste solutions (Colgate, Sensodyne, Splat, Nenedent, Perlodent) at different concentrations and a control group consisting of complete Dulbecco’s modified eagle medium. After the experiments, cell viability was evaluated using flow cytometry. 2 Way ANOVA was used to see the interaction effect of the main effects of toothpaste solution and concentration factors. Pairwise comparisons were made by Tukey post hoc tests. In the study, the significance level was taken as 0.05. Results As a result of the analysis, it was seen that the toothpaste solution and concentration factors and the interactions of these 2 factors were effective on the viable, early apoptotic, late apoptotic and necrotic cell rates. The statistically highest live cell ratios were detected in Splat’s toothpaste solutions (90.14% at 0.4% concentration) after the control group (90.82%) and the group with the lowest viability values was determined in Colgate group (75.74% at 0.4% concentration) (p < 0.05). Conclusions According to the results of the study, it was observed that toothpastes containing SLS affected the viability of cells more negatively than toothpastes with other detergent contents.

Abstract
Introduction Mechanisms underlying skin sensitization in allergic contact dermatitis have been actively studied using the murine contact hypersensitivity (CHS) model. However, much less is known about sensitization at the vaginal mucosa (VM). Methods We developed a CHS model with VM sensitization and epicutaneous elicitation at the ear. We then examined the proliferation activity of lymphocytes, the frequencies of T cells and the differentiation of hapten‐specific T cells in draining lymph nodes (dLNs) after sensitization. Results Hapten‐specific CHS responses to 2,4‐dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB), 2,4,6‐trinitrochrolobenzene, and oxazolone assessed by ear swelling suggested that the VM would be an inductive site of CHS to haptens. In the comparisons of CHS responses to each of the three haptens examined, the lower responses in VM‐sensitized mice were observed than skin‐sensitized mice (e.g., DNFB‐induced responses, −56%; p < .001, at 48 h after challenge). Consistent with the CHS responses, the DNFB‐induced proliferation of cells in dLNs examined by 5‐bromo‐2ʹ‐deoxyuridine assay was lower (−62%; p < .001) in VM‐sensitized mice than skin‐sensitized mice. On the other hand, between skin and VM sensitization, no significant differences were observed in the frequencies of interferon‐γ‐producing CD4+ and CD8+ effector, and regulatory T cells in dLNs after sensitization. We also observed no significant differences with respect to differentiation of hapten‐specific T cells based on the examination of cytokine production from dLN cells stimulated in vitro with 2,4‐dinitrobenzene sulfonate. Conclusion These findings suggested that the lower T cell proliferation after VM sensitization is important for the lower CHS responses with VM sensitization than skin sensitization.

Abstract
A biofilm, a community of microorganisms, is highly resistant to antibiotics, resulting in massive losses in various areas. We herein present a strategy to remove Streptococcus mutans biofilms through a spontaneous exfoliation by the synergistic effect between zwitterion and sugar alcohols. It is assumed that the anionic site of zwitterion can be coupled with sugar alcohols and the cationic site remains in the state of lacking electrons. The cationic site allows the complexes to be delivered to negatively charged exopolysaccharides of biofilms. This strategy facilitates a significant increase in the ability of sugar alcohols to disperse aggregated exopolysaccharides. In this work, it was demonstrated that the mixture of betaine and erythritol existed as a complex in water and that the complex induced a spontaneous detachment of biofilms from the surface to which the biofilms had been adhered. This detachment resulted from a reduction in adhesive forces of the biofilms due to an increase in solubility of bacterial exopolysaccharides. The effects triggered by the formation of complex between zwitterion and sugar alcohol provide a simple and safe way to remove biofilms without antibiotics and physical forces.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of a dentifrice without sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) to a dentifrice with SLS in young adults aged 18-34 years on gingivitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred twenty participants (non-dental students) with a moderate gingival inflammation (bleeding on probing at 40-70 % of test sites) were included in this randomized controlled double blind clinical trial. According to randomization, participants had to brush their teeth either with dentifrice without SLS or with SLS for 8 weeks. The primary outcome was bleeding on marginal probing (BOMP). The secondary outcomes were plaque scores and gingival abrasion scores (GA) as well as a visual analogue scale (VAS) score at exit survey. Baseline and end differences were analysed by univariate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) test, between group differences by independent t test and within groups by paired sample t test. RESULTS BOMP improved within groups from on average 0.80 at baseline to 0.60 in the group without SLS and to 0.56 in the group with SLS. No statistical difference for BOMP, plaque and gingival abrasion was found between both groups. VAS scores for taste, freshness and foaming effect were significantly in favour of the SLS-containing dentifrice. CONCLUSION The test dentifrice without SLS was as effective as a regular SLS dentifrice on gingival bleeding scores and plaque scores. There was no significant difference in the incidence of gingival abrasion. CLINICAL RELEVANCE In patients diagnosed with gingivitis, a dentifrice without SLS seems to be equally effective compared to a dentifrice with SLS and did not demonstrate any significant difference in gingival abrasion. In patient with recurrent aphthous ulcers, the absence of SLS may even be beneficial. However, participants indicate that they appreciate the foaming effect of a dentifrice with SLS more.

Abstract
Desquamative gingivitis (DG) is characterized by
the erythematous gingiva, desquamation and erosion
of the gingival epithelium, and blister formation. It is
a common clinical manifestation in several diseases.
Contact allergic reactions to various oral hygiene
products and chemical agents have also been reported
to represent as DG. The management of DG has been
a major problem, largely because the etiology of the
disease has been elusive. In this paper, we aimed to
review the current literature on the pathogenesis,
diagnosis management and prognosis of DG.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect on dental plaque and gingivitis of a dentifrice without sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) compared to two SLS-containing dentifrices. MATERIAL AND METHODS For this double-blind, parallel study, 90 volunteers having moderate gingival inflammation (≥40%) were randomly divided among three groups: one group using non-SLS dentifrice containing enzymes, colostrum and low concentrations of zinc and two control groups each using different SLS-containing dentifrices. Dental plaque scores (Turesky modification of Quigley & Hein) and gingivitis scores (Bleeding On Marginal Probing) were assessed at baseline, after 2 and 4 weeks. RESULTS Eighty-nine participants provided evaluable data. A slight decrease in gingivitis scores was observed for all groups over 4 weeks, which was statistically significant for the non-SLS group. Mean values for dental plaque scores did not show major differences over 4 weeks. For both parameters, no significant differences between groups could be observed at any time point. Patient appreciation was in favour of the SLS groups especially regarding the foaming effect. CONCLUSION No significant differences could be observed with respect to the effect on plaque and gingivitis between SLS-containing and SLS-free dentifrice containing enzymes, colostrum and low concentration zinc. Patients enjoyed the duration of taste and the 'foaming effect' of SLS-containing dentifrices better.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)-free and SLS-containing dentifrice in patient with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). MATERIALS AND METHODS The design of this study was a double-blind crossover trial. The 90 subjects were divided into three groups: group I used SLS-free (a commercially available SLS-free dentifrice) and SLS-A (SLS-free + 1.5% SLS), group II used SLS-A and SLS-B (a commercially available 1.5% SLS-containing dentifrice), and group III used SLS-free and SLS-B. The subjects used one of the two assigned dentifrices for 8 weeks and then the other for the following 8 weeks. The order of the dentifrices used was selected at random, and there was a 2-week washout period between the two phases. The clinical parameters (number of ulcers, number of episodes, duration of ulcers, mean pain score) were compared between the two phases for each group. RESULTS The number of ulcers and episodes did not differ significantly between SLS-A, SLS-B, and SLS-free. Only duration of ulcers and mean pain score was significantly decreased during the period using SLS-free. CONCLUSION Although SLS-free did not reduce the number of ulcers and episodes, it affected the ulcer-healing process and reduces pain in daily lives in patients with RAS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to volatile fragrances is commonplace and may be related to various eye and airway symptoms. Skin exposure to fragrances is known to cause perfume contact allergy and eczema, but it is unknown whether eye or airway symptoms elicited by fragrance products are associated with contact allergy or eczema. OBJECTIVES To investigate if eye and airway symptoms elicited by fragrance products are associated with perfume contact allergy or hand eczema in a population-based sample. METHODS A questionnaire on eye and airway symptoms elicited by fragrance products was mailed to 1189 individuals who had recently participated in a Danish population-based study of allergic diseases. Results from the questionnaire about localization and character of the symptoms were compared with data on patch testing and 1-year prevalence of hand eczema collected during the health examination. RESULTS Positive, independent and significant (P < 0.05) associations were found between eye and airway symptoms elicited by fragrance products and perfume contact allergy (adjusted odds ratios 2.0-3.7) and hand eczema (adjusted odds ratios 1.6-2.6). In further analysis, similar and consistent results were found regarding severity of the symptoms. No associations were found between nickel contact allergy and the symptoms. Female sex and psychological vulnerability were independently associated with eye and airway symptoms elicited by fragrance products, but adjustment in multivariate analysis did not change the results regarding perfume contact allergy and hand eczema. CONCLUSIONS Individuals with perfume contact allergy and/or hand eczema, as opposed to those without, have more frequent and more severe eye or airway symptoms after exposure to volatile fragrance products. Having hand eczema has the greatest impact on reporting eye and airway symptoms elicited by fragrance products.

Abstract
Resin-based dental materials polymerized using blue light are frequently used in dental practice and may come in contact with the oral mucosa. Remnants from oral hygiene product ingredients, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), add to the chemical exposure of the mucosa. The aim of the present in vitro study was to elucidate the cytotoxic effects in terms of apoptosis and necrosis after exposures to combinations of an adhesive (0.5% and 0.6%), SLS (concentration range 0.0025%-0.0075%), and irradiation from a dental curing lamp (radiant exposure of 8 J cm(-2)). The test system chosen was rat submandibular salivary gland acinar cells, and the cytotoxic effects were measured by fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry methods. Cytotoxicity was observed as a result of irradiation. The most pronounced cytotoxic effects were seen in cells exposed to a combination of adhesive and SLS compared with those exposed to either agent alone. Necrosis was the dominating form of cell death for all exposures, except for the highest concentration of SLS. Apoptosis was dose-dependent on SLS in the rat submandibular acinar cells. Cytotoxic considerations of dental materials should include contributions from irradiation and other chemicals that might be present in the oral cavity.

Abstract
We created a murine model of delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) to 1-chloro-2, 4-dinitrobenzene (DNCB). Using this murine model, we compared oral mucosal sensitization and skin sensitization for the difference in reaction during the elicitation phase. Evaluation of sensitizability, using the mouse ear swelling test (MEST) after oral mucosal or skin sensitization, showed that the ear swelling response peaked 24 h after challenge. The optimal induction concentration was 1.0% in both oral mucosal and skin sensitization, resulting in a positive reaction rate of 100%. However, the ear swelling response 24 h after challenge with the optimal concentration of DNCB (1.0%) was significantly lower in oral mucosal than in skin sensitization. We compared the oral mucosal and skin sensitization sites for the number of Langerhans' cells (LC) and the antigen-presenting capability in the induction phase. The numbers of F4/80+ major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II+ LC before induction did not differ significantly between the oral mucosa and the skin. After induction, F4/80+ MHC class II+ LC increased in number, but the increase was significantly smaller in the oral mucosa than in the skin. MEST on anti-CD86 antibody-administered mice showed that ear swelling was similarly suppressed after oral mucosal or skin sensitization. In murine models of DTH after oral mucosal sensitization, the number of F4/80+CD86+ LC increased after induction, but the increase was significantly smaller than that in murine models of DTH after skin sensitization. This study showed that, in murine models of DTH, oral mucosal sensitization elicited a weaker reaction than skin sensitization. This was presumably because oral mucosal sensitization induced fewer LC, resulting in lower antigen-presenting capability.
