Flame-Retarding and Mechanical Properties of Flexible Polyvinyl Chloride with Surface-Treated Lamellar Magnesium Hydroxide

In situ nanoarchitectonics of magnesium hydroxide particles for property regulation of carboxymethyl cellulose/poly(vinyl alcohol) aerogels

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based aerogels with low density, low thermal conductivity, and biodegradability are promising candidates for environmentally friendly heat-insulating materials. However, the application of CMC-based aerogels as insulation materials in building exterior walls is limited by the high water sensitivity, poor mechanical properties and high flammability of these aerogels. In this work, a simple hydration method was used to generate magnesium hydroxide (MH) directly from CMC/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixed sol with active MgO obtained by calcined magnesite as the raw material. A series of composite aerogels with different MH contents were prepared through the freeze-drying method. Scanning electron microscopy showed that nanoflower-like MH was successfully synthesised in situ in the 3D porous polymer aerogel matrix. Compared with the mechanical properties and water resistance of the original CMC/PVA composite aerogels, those of the composite aerogels were significantly improved. In addition, the flame retardancy of the CMC/PVA composite aerogels was greatly enhanced by the introduction of MH into the polymer matrix, and the limiting oxygen index reached 35.5% when the MH loading was 60%.

Recovering chemical sludge from the zero liquid discharge system of flue gas desulfurization wastewater as flame retardants by a stepwise precipitation process

In this study, a five-stage stepwise precipitation process, including pre-sedimentation, magnesium removal, gypsum precipitation, ettringite precipitation and calcium removal, was proposed as a softening pretreatment for zero liquid discharge system for flue gas desulfurization wastewater. Batch tests and long-term bench-scale experiment showed that magnesium, sulfate and calcium were efficiently removed with efficiencies all above 98.0%, leaving a clean effluent majorly containing NaCl and NaOH. The precipitated CaSO₄, CaCO₃, Mg(OH)₂ and ettringite were completely separated by stepwise precipitation, and the purity of Mg(OH)₂ and ettringite were further enhanced by washing and soaking treatment. CaSO₄ and CaCO₃ can be directly recycled as gypsum product and desulfurizing agent within the power plant, while Mg(OH)₂ and ettringite presented proper particle size and excellent thermal properties as a synergistic flame retardant. The flame retardancy of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer were greatly improved when blended with recovered Mg(OH)₂ and ettringite, and possessed better performance by blending them together because ettringite could act as a dispersing and compatible agent of Mg(OH)₂, and relieve the intensity of smoke releasing. Chemical sludge recovery compensates the total cost of the five-stage process by 45.0%, and makes the process technically versatile, economically beneficial and environmentally friendly without solid waste production.

Synthesis of Transition Metal Complexes and Their Effects on Combustion Properties of Semi-Rigid Polyvinyl Chloride

Using introduction of MoO₄²⁻ and Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺, or Zn²⁺ into amphiphilic polymers (DN) via an ion-exchange reaction, different transition metal complexes, as retardants and smoke suppressants, including (DN)Mo, Fe(DN)Mo, Cu(DN)Mo, and Zn(DN)Mo were synthesized. Combined with the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), it could be determined that ionic bonding of these ions with DN occurred. Subsequently, the influence of flame-retardant, smoke-suppression, and mechanical properties of (DN)Mo, Fe(DN)Mo, Cu(DN)Mo, and Zn(DN)Mo on polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) were tested. It was demonstrated that transition metal complexes of three metal elements, Fe(DN)Mo, Cu(DN)Mo, and Zn(DN)Mo, showed better flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and thermal stability as confirmed by microcalorimetry, limiting oxygen index (LOI), smoke density, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) tests, in which Cu(DN)Mo worked best due to the Lewis acid mechanism and reductive coupling mechanism. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the addition of (DN)Mo, Fe(DN)Mo, Cu(DN)Mo, and Zn(DN)Mo promoted the formation of a dense carbon layer on the PVC surface during combustion, which could protect the interior PVC. The addition of these transition metal complexes hardly impaired the mechanical properties of PVC.

Biocompatible and functional inorganic magnesium ceramic particles for biomedical applications

Magnesium ceramics hold promise for numerous biological applications. This review covers the synthesis of magnesium ceramic particles with specific morphologies and potential modification techniques. Magnesium ceramic particles possess multiple characteristics directly applicable to human biology; they are anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and offer anti-cancer effects. Based on these advantages, magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles have been extensively utilized across biomedical fields. In a vascular stent, the incorporation of magnesium ceramic nanoparticles enhances re-endothelialization. Additionally, tissue regeneration for bone, cartilage, and kidney can be promoted by magnesium ceramics. This review enables researchers to identify the optimum synthetic conditions to prepare magnesium ceramics with specific morphologies and sizes and select the appropriate modification protocols. It is also intended to elucidate the desirable physicochemical properties and biological benefits of magnesium ceramics.
