The Association of Negative Urgency with Psychological Distress: Moderating Role of Proactive Coping Strategies

The relationship between sleep quality and occupational fatigue in endoscopy nurses: mediating role of positive coping style

Background

Nursing occupational fatigue has emerged as a critical issue affecting the safety and health of nurses. This phenomenon not only impairs nurses' performance and mental well-being but also poses risks to patient safety and the quality of care provided. This study focuses on endoscopic nurses to explore the mediating role of positive coping styles between sleep quality and occupational fatigue, aiming to identify effective strategies to alleviate fatigue, thereby improving the work environment and enhancing healthcare quality.

Methods

From July to August 2023, a cross-sectional design was used to select 258 endoscopy nurses from 25 top-three hospitals in 14 cities across 5 provinces in China. Data was collected through general information questionnaires, Fatigue assessment instrument, Pittsburgh sleep quality index, and Simple Coping Style Questionnaire. A structural equation model of sleep quality - positive coping style - occupational fatigue was constructed using Amos 26.0, and Bootstrap was employed to test the mediating effect.

Results

The results showed that the mean scores of sleep quality, occupational fatigue, and positive coping style for endoscopy nurses were 8.89 ± 4.13, 17.73 ± 5.64, and 18.32 ± 10.46, respectively. Positive coping style were negatively correlated with sleep quality and occupational fatigue (p < 0.001). Positive coping style partially mediated the relationship between sleep quality and occupational fatigue, with a mediating effect value of 0.253, accounting for 42.10% of the total effect.

Conclusion

Sleep quality can indirectly affect the level of occupational fatigue through positive coping style. Nursing managers should enhance nurses' positive coping skills, improve nurses' sleep quality, and reduce occupational fatigue among nurses.

The Mediating Effect of Coping Strategies and Emotion Regulation in the Relationship between Impulsivity, Metacognition, and Eating Disorders

BACKGROUND

Risk factors for eating disorders are multifaceted and complex, so it is crucial to elucidate the role of executive functions, including impulsivity and metacognition, and coping strategies in the severity of eating behaviors. The study aims were threefold: (1) to analyze gender differences in impulsivity, metacognition, coping strategies, emotion regulation, and eating disorders; (2) to examine the correlation between the study variables; and (3) to test the mediating role of coping and emotion-regulation strategies in the relationship between metacognition, impulsivity, and eating disorders.

METHODS

A total of 1076 participants (Mage = 21.78, SD = 5.10; 77.7% women) completed a set of questionnaires. Two mediation analyses were conducted to test the mediating role of coping strategies, including emotion regulation, in the relationship between executive functions (i.e., impulsivity and metacognition) and eating disorders.

RESULTS

Women displayed higher coping strategies, specifically emotional expression, wishful thinking, and social support, whereas men presented greater social withdrawal. Mediational analyses showed a significant association between impulsivity, metacognition, and eating disorders, whose relationship was partially mediated by coping strategies and mainly by emotion regulation.

CONCLUSION

Interventions based on coping strategies and emotion regulation could be a feasible and effective option to deal with eating disorders among the young population.

The Role of Time Perspectives and Impulsivity Dimensions in Coping Styles

Both time perspectives and impulsivity dimensions are groups of traits that are connected to self-control abilities and might be important for coping styles. However, to date, no study has systematically investigated their utility in predicting coping styles with regard to their multidimensional nature. The current study was correlational and exploratory, aiming to discover what amount of variance in each of the three coping styles, problem-oriented, active emotion-oriented, and avoidant, is accounted for by two groups of predictors: time perspectives and impulsivity dimensions. N = 397 young adults aged 18-35 from the general population took part in the study. Results of a multiple linear regression testing both groups of predictors separately and of hierarchical regression analysis introducing the two predictor groups in subsequent steps suggested that time perspectives accounted for more variance in adaptive coping styles: problem-oriented and active emotion-oriented coping. For avoidant coping, both time perspectives and impulsivity dimensions accounted for a similar amount of variance. The results provide evidence that time perspectives should be investigated in domains related to coping (e.g., mental health issues, substance abuse, and risk-taking behaviors), for which impulsivity has been considered an important predictor. Moreover, impulsivity ought to be tested with regard to its multidimensionality.

When the UPPS-P Model of Impulsivity Meets a Revised Approach: The Development and Validation of the TRUE Multidimensional Impulsivity Scale

There is inconsistency in the measurement of impulsivity resulting from the diversity in its conceptualization. We aimed to develop a revised measure based on the Urgency, Premeditation (lack of), Perseverance (lack of), Sensation Seeking - Positive Urgency (UPPS-P) model (i.e., TRUE Multidimensional Impulsivity Scale; TRUE-MIS) considering the limitations and strengths of the existing measures. We conceptualized impulsivity as a personality trait referring to the inability to restrain one's urges without thinking about the future consequences in various contexts. A total of 535 adults (262 females, M = 34.1, SD = 12.7) participated in Study 1. Principal component analyses indicated a four-factor structure (internal urgency, social urgency, lack of premeditation, and lack of perseverance) with satisfactory internal consistency and validity evidence by significant relations with self-control. Confirmatory factor analysis in Study 2 confirmed the factor structure obtained in Study 1. Hierarchical linear regression analyses provided further validity evidence through establishing differential links between the subscales and Big Five personality traits, emotion regulation, depression, anxiety, and smartphone addiction in a sample of 556 adults (368 females, M = 24.0, SD = 7.4). Overall, TRUE-MIS is a valid and reliable measure of impulsivity addressing the arguments regarding the conceptual structure of the construct.

Negative vs. Positive Psychology: a Review of Science of Well-Being

Happiness, well-being, human freedom, and life events are interconnected. Nevertheless, the debate about human well-being struggles to find an exact definition. Literature debates on the importance of positive psychology or adverse effects of negative psychology in the well-being context discuss separately. However, both counter each other but have their significance and indisputable fact. Human psychology evolves around determinism and Free Will. One type of determinism is hard, while the other is soft. Individuals who are adamant about and embrace acceptance of chances are driven by their nature and psychology to choose negative behaviors under hard determinism. They give up their free will, whereas soft determinists use it to make choices and behave positively. However, the researchers looked at negative psychology as a useful aspect and positive psychology's dark side. We argued that there are reasons to suppose that chances can develop into options and vice versa. From a well-being perspective, negative and positive psychological strengths and weaknesses can be investigated. From the literature review, useful hypotheses for future research have been derived from our synthesis.
