Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of dietary supplementation of arginine (ARG) or guanidinoacetic acid (GAA), with or without phenylalanine (PHE), on the ascites susceptibility in the cold-stressed broilers fed canola meal (CM)-based diet. METHOD A total of 450 one-day-old male broiler chicks were randomly allocated to 30 floor pens with 6 replications for each of the 5 treatments. The dietary treatments were as follows: CM-based diet (control), CM-based diet + 2.57 g/kg ARG, CM-based diet + 1.8 g/kg GAA, CM-based diet + 2.57 g/kg ARG + 1.5 g/kg PHE and CM-based diet + 1.8 g/kg GAA + 1.5 g/kg PHE. The groups experienced cold stress induction starting at 32°C on day one, with gradual reductions to 15°C on days 21. The temperature was then held at 15°C for the remainder of the experiment. RESULTS The supplements ARG + PHE and GAA + PHE resulted in improved feed conversion ratios (FCR) when compared to the control group. In comparison with the control group, supplementation of ARG and ARG + PHE decreased the ascites mortality by increasing the plasma nitric oxide level (NO), blood O2 partial pressure, blood O2 saturation (SO2), and decreasing the blood CO2 partial pressure (PCO2) and right ventricle to total ventricle (RV:TV) ratio. Supplementation of GAA and GAA + PHE also declined ascites mortality by reducing blood PCO2 while increasing blood SO2 and plasma NO levels. Although plasma corticosterone level and RV:TV ratio were similar between the GAA and control groups, adding GAA + PHE significantly reduced both compared to the control group. CONCLUSION In summary, supplementing cold-stressed broiler chicken diets with 2.57 g/kg ARG may alleviate hypertension. Additionally, 1.8 g/kg GAA proves to be an effective substitute for dietary ARG in low-ARG diets, alleviating adverse effects from cold stress. Proper PHE formulation, at 1.5 g/kg in this study, is crucial when using ARG and GAA supplements.

Abstract
The study investigated guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) supplementation with varying dietary digestible arginine (Arg) and glycine+serine (Gly+Ser) concentrations in the starter phase, exploring respective carry-over effects on growth performance, blood chemistry, incidence of pectoral myopathies and proximate composition in broilers. A total of 2,800 one-day-old male broiler chicks were distributed in a central composite design with 2 factors and double experimental mesh, represented by supplementation or omission of 0.6 g per kg of GAA, with a central point represented by 107% of Arg and 147% of Gly+Ser, 4 factorial points (combinations of Arg/Gly+Ser concentrations: 96.4/132.5%; 117.6/132.5%; 96.4/161.5%, and 117.6/132.5%), and 4 axial points (combinations of axial points estimated for Arg and Gly+Ser, with the central points of 92/147%; 122/147%; 107/126.5, and 107/167.5%), totaling 18 treatments, 4 repetitions to factorial and axial points, 24 replicates to the central point, and 25 birds per pen. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) from d 1 to 10 had a linear response (P = 0.009) for the decreasing Arg content and a quadratic response (P = 0.047) for Gly+Ser concentrations. Broilers supplemented GAA had lower FCR compared with nonsupplemented groups from d 1 to 10 (P = 0.048) and d 1 to 42 (P = 0.026). Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) exhibited increasing and decreasing linear effects as a function of Arg (P = 0.008) and Gly+Ser (P = 0.020) concentrations, respectively. Guanidinoacetic acid decreased serum AST (P = 0.028). Guanidinoacetic acid reduced moderate + severe (P = 0.039) and mild (P = 0.015) Wooden Breast scores. The occurrence of normal White Striping increased (P = 0.002), while severe score was reduced (P = 0.029) with GAA supplementation. In conclusion, increased digestible Arg:Lys and 14% and 6% above the recommendations (107% and 147%), respectively, provided improved FCR during the starter phase. Dietary GAA supplementation (0.6 g per kg) improved FCR, reduced severity of breast myopathies and appears to have reduced muscle damage in broilers fed plant-based diets.

Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) in diets containing varying levels of corn replacement with low-tannin sorghum (LTS) for laying hens in the later stage of production. In a 12-wk study, a total of 288 laying hens at 52 wk of age were divided into 6 treatment groups. Each treatment group had 8 replicates, each of which consisted of 6 hens. A 2 × 3 factorial design was used to investigate the impact of substituting corn with LTS at 3 levels (100% corn, 50% LTS, and 100% LTS) with 2 doses of GAA supplementation (0 and 0.6 g/kg). The results indicate that there were interaction effects (P < 0.05) between diet type and GAA supplementation on protein digestibility and AMEn, with the GAA supplement being more effective in the 100% LTS group. Replacing corn with LTS at both levels had no negative effects on performance and metabolic profile. In contrast, the 100% LTS diet increased monounsaturated fatty acids in the yolk (P < 0.05), but decreased the yolk color index, the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) to saturated fatty acids (SFA) in the yolk, ileal digestibility of energy, and AMEn when compared to the 100% corn diet (P < 0.05). Regardless of the diet, dietary supplementation with GAA resulted in increases (P < 0.05) in shell-breaking strength, the PUFA to SFA ratio in egg yolk, and concentrations of creatine and nitric oxide in serum. There was also a decrease (P < 0.05) in serum malondialdehyde concentration with GAA supplementation. In conclusion, the positive effects of GAA on protein digestibility and AMEn were found to be more pronounced when corn was completely replaced with LTS. However, the positive effects of GAA on egg-laying performance, eggshell quality, antioxidant status, and yolk fatty acid composition remained consistent regardless of the extent to which corn was substituted with LTS.

Abstract
The primary objective of this study was to investigate the influence of high and low inclusions of non-bound amino acid (NBAA) in standard and reduced-crude protein (CP), wheat-based diets on growth performance in broiler chickens. Dietary treatments were formulated to either 210 or 180 g/kg CP. The 210 g/kg CP diets contained either 12.1 or 21.1 g/kg NBAA and 180 g/kg CP diets contained either 44.0 or 55.5 g/kg NBAA. The formulations also generated different dietary starch:protein ratios which impacted on starch-protein digestive dynamics. Each of the four dietary treatments were offered to 7 replicates of 15 birds housed in floor pens from 14 to 35 days post-hatch or a total of 420 male Ross 308 chickens. Growth performance, relative abdominal fat-pad weights, breast muscle and leg shank yields were determined. Ileal starch and protein (N) digestibility coefficients, disappearance rates and starch:protein disappearance rate ratios were defined. Apparent ileal digestibility coefficients and disappearance rates of 16 amino acids were determined at 35 days post-hatch and free concentrations of 20 amino acids in systemic plasma were determined at 34 days post-hatch. The transition from 210 to 180 g/kg CP diets depressed weight gain by 11.3% (1742 versus 1964 g/bird) and FCR by 10.4% (1.606 versus 1.455), although both parameters were subject to treatment interactions. The treatment interaction (P < 0.001) observed for FCR was because high NBAA inclusions significantly improved FCR by 4.17% (1.424 versus 1.486) in birds offered 210 g/kg CP diets, but significantly depressed FCR by 3.36% (1.632 versus 1.579) in 180 g/kg CP diets. A quadratic relationship (r = 0.860; P < 0.001) between dietary NBAA inclusions and FCR was detected, which indicated that when NBAA inclusions exceed 18.5 g/kg efficiency of feed conversion deteriorated. However, a multiple linear regression (r = 0.913; P < 0.001) was detected for FCR where both NBAA inclusions and analysed dietary starch:protein ratios were significantly (P < 0.001) related to FCR. This relationship indicates that growth performance of broiler chickens offered wheat-based diets is strongly influenced by dietary NBAA inclusions coupled with dietary starch:protein ratios and consideration is given to the possible underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
The incorporation of probiotics into the diet of large yellow croaker has been demonstrated by several studies to confer partial disease resistance. Bacillus halophilic isolated from the intestinal flora was used to study its effects on performance growth indicators, intestinal tissue structure, intestinal flora and the metabolism of Larimichthys crocea. A total of 180 fishes with an initial body weight of (164.00 ± 54.00) g were fed diets with three different concentrations of Bacillus halophilic: 0 cfu/mL (FC0, control group), 108 cfu/mL (FC8, treatment group), and 1012 cfu/mL (FC12, treatment group). The results showed that there were no significant differences in specific growth rate among all groups (P > 0.05). Compared to the FC0 group, the final body weight and Weight gain rate were significantly higher in FC8 and FC12 groups (P < 0.05). The Survival of the FC12 group significantly improved (P < 0.05). Compared to the FC0 group, crude protein content in muscle of the FC8 group significantly increased (P < 0.05), crude fat content significantly increased in the FC12 group (P < 0.05), crude protein content in whole fish experimental groups significantly increased (P < 0.05), and ash content significantly increased in the FC8 group (P < 0.05). In terms of antioxidant ability, the content of LZM in blood increased significantly in the FC8 group (P < 0.05), GSH content in liver of the FC12 group increased significantly (P < 0.05), while the content of MDA and AKP in blood and liver had no significant difference (P > 0.05). At the level of intestinal structure, there were no significant differences in villus height, crypt depth and goblet cell number between control group and treatment groups (P > 0.05). At the phylum level, Firmicutes was the dominant phylum, and the genus level, Lactobacillus and Bacteroides were the dominant bacteria in FC8 and FC12. A total of 1070 metabolites were identified, among which lipid metabolites accounted for 46.7%. Metabolites were involved in six main ways, mainly related to the metabolism of amino acids and lipids. The correlation analysis between microbes and metabolites showed that the intestinal flora of Larimichthys crocea could promote the synthesis of metabolites, among which Bacteroides and Megamonas could promote the synthesis of beneficial metabolites such as amino acids and vitamins. Through this study, we found that Bacillus halophilic can significantly improve growth, the antioxidant immunity ability and promote the expression of growth related metabolites, with the FC12 group being the better successful.

Abstract
The objective of this review is to identify the shortfalls of wheat-based, crude protein (CP)-reduced diets for broiler chickens as wheat is inferior to maize in this context but to inconsistent extents. Inherent factors in wheat may be compromising gut integrity; these include soluble non-starch polysaccharides (NSP), amylase trypsin inhibitors (ATI) and gluten. Soluble NSP in wheat induce increased gut viscosities, which can lead to compromised gut integrity, which is not entirely ameliorated by NSP-degrading feed enzymes. Wheat ATI probably compromise gut integrity and may also have the capacity to increase endogenous amino acid flows and decrease apparent starch and protein digestibilities. Gluten inclusions of 20 g/kg in a maize-soy diet depressed weight gain and feed intake and higher gluten inclusions have been shown to activate inflammatory cytokine-related genes in broiler chickens. Further research is required, perhaps particularly in relation to wheat ATI. The protein content of wheat is typically higher than maize; importantly, this results in higher inclusions of non-bound amino acids in CP-reduced broiler diets. These higher inclusions could trigger post-enteral amino acid imbalances, leading to the deamination of surplus amino acids and the generation of ammonia (NH3) which, if not adequately detoxified, results in compromised growth performance from NH3 overload. Thus, alternatives to non-bound amino acids to meet amino acid requirements in birds offered CP-reduced, wheat-based diets merit evaluation. The digestion of wheat starch is more rapid than that of maize starch which may be a disadvantage as the provision of some slowly digestible starch in broiler diets may enhance performance. Alternatively, slowly digestible starch may result in more de novo lipogenesis. Therefore, it may prove instructive to evaluate CP-reduced diets based on maize-wheat and/or sorghum–wheat blends rather than entirely wheat. This would reduce non-bound amino acid inclusions by lowering dietary CP derived from feed grains and may enhance starch digestive dynamics by retarding starch digestion rates. Also, the use of biomarkers to monitor gut integrity in broiler chickens is examined where calprotectin, ovotransferrin and possibly citrulline appear to hold promise, but their validation requires further research.
