Abstract
Vanadium compounds are being investigated as potential therapeutic agents in the treatment of many health problems, primarily diabetes. We aimed to provide the effect of N(1)-4-hydroxysalicylidene-N(4)-salicylidene-S-methyl-isothiosemicarbazidato-oxovanadium(IV) (VOL) on small intestinal injury in experimental male diabetic rats. Four groups were created of 3.0-3.5-month-old rats. The rats were made diabetic by a single dose of streptozotocin (STZ) at 65 mg/kg and grouped as follows: control animals, VOL-given control animals, STZ-induced diabetic animals and STZ-induced diabetic animals given VOL. A daily dose of 0.2 mM/kg vanadium complex was administered orally for 12 days after the inducement of diabetes. On the 12th day, small intestine tissue samples were taken. According to the data obtained from the biochemical analysis, reduced glutathione (GSH) level, catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), Na+/K+-ATPase and paraoxanase (PON) activities were increased, whereas sialic acid (SA), xanthine oxidase (XO) and disaccharidases (maltase and saccharidase) activities were decreased in the small intestine tissue of VOL-treated diabetic rats. Microscopic examinations revealed a remarkable decrease in the mucosal necrotic areas, discontinuity in the brush border, deterioration of the villi integrity and oedema inside the villi, but with a mild decrease in the inflammatory cells, deterioration and loss of integrity of the gland in the small intestine of VOL-treated diabetic rats. Moreover, VOL treatment markedly decreased the proliferation of villus cells and especially inflammatory cells in the small intestine of diabetic rats. According to the obtained data, the administration of VOL is a potentially convenient strategy to reducing small intestine injury in diabetic rats.

Abstract
In this study, 9-anthraldehyde-N(4)-methylthiosemicarbazone (MeATSC) 1 and [Co(phen)2(O2CO)]Cl·6H2O 2 (where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were synthesized. [Co(phen)2(O2CO)]Cl·6H2O 2 was used to produce anhydrous [Co(phen)2(H2O)2](NO3)33. Subsequently, anhydrous [Co(phen)2(H2O)2](NO3)33 was reacted with MeATSC 1 to produce [Co(phen)2(MeATSC)](NO3)3·1.5H2O·C2H5OH 4. The ligand, MeATSC 1 and all complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, FT IR, UV-visible, and multinuclear NMR (1H, 13C, and 59Co) spectroscopy, along with HRMS, and conductivity measurements, where appropriate. Interactions of MeATSC 1 and complex 4 with calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) were investigated by carrying out UV-visible spectrophotometric studies. UV-visible spectrophotometric studies revealed weak interactions between ctDNA and the analytes, MeATSC 1 and complex 4 (Kb = 8.1 × 105 and 1.6 × 104 M-1, respectively). Topoisomerase inhibition assays and cleavage studies proved that complex 4 was an efficient catalytic inhibitor of human topoisomerases I and IIα. Based upon the results obtained from the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) assay on 4T1-luc metastatic mammary breast cancer cells (IC50 = 34.4 ± 5.2 μM when compared to IC50 = 13.75 ± 1.08 μM for the control, cisplatin), further investigations into the molecular events initiated by exposure to complex 4 were investigated. Studies have shown that complex 4 activated both the apoptotic and autophagic signaling pathways in addition to causing dissipation of the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm). Furthermore, activation of cysteine-aspartic proteases3 (caspase 3) in a time- and concentration-dependent manner coupled with the ΔΨm, studies implicated the intrinsic apoptotic pathway as the major regulator of cell death mechanism.

Abstract
Four new metal complexes were synthesized and screened for their cytotoxic activity after sufficient assertion from the preliminary DNA binding studies. The metal complexes could bind to CT-DNA through intercalation binding mode. This has also been confirmed by the molecular docking studies. The DNA cleavage efficiencies of these complexes with pBR322 DNA were investigated by gel electrophoresis. The complexes were found to promote the cleavage of pBR322 DNA from the supercoiled form I to the open circular form II in the presence of an oxidizing agent (H2O2). The in vitro chemosensitivity of the studied complexes exhibits significant cytotoxic effects, compared to those reported for cisplatin. These findings represent a prompting to search for the probable interaction of these complexes with other cellular elements of fundamental consequence in cell proliferation. The in vitro anticancer activities indicate that the Cu(II) complex is active against the selected human tumor cell lines, and the order of in vitro anticancer activities is consistent with the DNA-binding affinities. Towards noncancerous cell line, Cu(II) complex exhibits very low toxicity. On the other hand all the complexes have been found to exhibit cytotoxic effects against cancerous cell lines with potency more than that of the widely used drug cisplatin and hence they have the potential to act as promising anticancer agents. Captivatingly, they are non-toxic to normal cell lymphocytes revealing that they are selective in killing only the cancer cells.

Abstract
A new series of halogenated Schiff bases was synthesized by the condensation of 5-fluoro-2-hydroxy acetophenone and 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxy acetophenone with different alkyl amines, namely propyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, and octadecyl amines, under microwave irradiation. Newly formed molecules were characterized by Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR and (13)C NMR) spectroscopic techniques. Further, the Schiff bases were screened for antifungal bioassay, and the results showed potential fungicidal activity against two very important plant infecting fungi, viz. Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii. Among the screened compounds, 2,4-dichloro-2-[1-(propylimino)ethyl]phenol was found to be the most active compound against both R. solani (ED50 8.02 mg L(-1)) and S. rolfsii (ED50 21.51 mg L(-1)) followed by 2,4-dichloro-2-[1-(pentylimino) ethyl]phenol (ED50 13.02 and 29.57 mg L(-1), respectively). The synthesized compounds were also screened for antioxidant activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)-free radical scavenging technique. All the compounds showed very low to moderate activity as compared with Gallic acid.

Abstract
Three ternary copper (II) complexes containing 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 1), dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq, 2) and dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz, 3), with the formulation [Cu2(NCL)2(H4PASP)]·4.5H2O (1-3) (where NCL=the diimine coligand, H4PASP=N,N'-(p-xylylene)di-2-aminosuccinic acid), were isolated and characterized. The binding of these complexes with calf thymus DNA was studied using UV-visible absorption titration, emission, and circular dichroism spectroscopy, among other methods. The changes in physicochemical properties that occurred upon binding of these complexes with DNA indicate that binding occurs primarily through intercalative interactions. Human tumor cell lines HeLa, PC3, and HepG2 were treated with the copper(II) complexes in vitro and cell survival rate was assessed by 3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and crystal violet survival assay. Flow cytometry was performed on treated cells labeled with AnnexinV/Propidium Iodide staining to determine rates of apoptosis. Western blot was performed to determine the expression levels of the apoptotic markers p53, Bax, and Bcl-2. The complexes reduced cell viability and induced apoptosis in cells of human tumor cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, using a nude mouse xenograft model, we found that the three ternary copper (II) complexes inhibited human tumor cell growth in vivo. In conclusion, these novel synthetic copper complexes have profound antitumor effects on human tumor cells and are promising therapeutic agents for human tumors.

Abstract
Binary and ternary water soluble copper(II) complexes - [Cu(nphen)2(H2O)](NO3)2·H2O (1), [Cu(phen)2(H2O)](NO3)2 (2), [Cu(nphen)(l-tyr)(H2O)]NO3·2H2O (3), [Cu(phen)(tyr)(H2O)] NO3·2H2O (4) - and diquarternary salts of nphen and phen (nphen=5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline, phen=1,10-phenanthroline and tyr=l-tyrosine) have been synthesized and characterized by CHN analysis, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR and IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The CT-DNA binding properties of these compounds have been investigated by thermal denaturation measurements, absorption and emission spectroscopy. The supercoiled pUC19 plasmid DNA cleavage activity of these compounds has been explored by agarose gel electrophoresis. The cytotoxicity of these compounds against MCF-7, Caco-2, A549 cancer cells and BEAS-2B healthy cells was also studied by using XTT method. The complexes 1-4 exhibit significant high cytotoxicity with low IC50 values in compared with cisplatin. The effect of the substituents of phen and coordinated amino acid in the above complexes are presented and discussed.

Abstract
New derivatives of thiosemicarbazone Schiff base with isatin moiety were synthesized L1-L6. The structures of these compounds were characterized based on the spectroscopic techniques. Compound L6 was further characterized by XRD single crystal. The interaction of these compounds with calf thymus (CT-DNA) exhibited high intrinsic binding constant (k(b)=5.03-33.00×10(5) M(-1)) for L1-L3 and L5 and (6.14-9.47×10(4) M(-1)) for L4 and L6 which reflect intercalative activity of these compounds toward CT-DNA. This result was also confirmed by the viscosity data. The electrophoresis studies reveal the higher cleavage activity of L1-L3 than L4-L6. The in vitro anti-proliferative activity of these compounds against human colon cancer cell line (HCT 116) revealed that the synthesized compounds (L3, L6 and L2) exhibited good anticancer potency.
