Advancing the evidence base for social work in long-term care: the disconnect between practice and research

Person-centeredness in home- and community-based long-term care: current challenges and new directions

Person-centered care (PCC) has demonstrated to be a viable and preferred model of providing health and institutionalized long-term care services. However, the concept of PCC has not been fully extended to home- and community-based long-term care services (HCBS) for older adults with chronic conditions. This review highlights the need for PCC in HCBS and suggests that social workers may play a role in overcoming cultural and structural barriers to extending PCC to HCBS that include: the fragmentation of the industry, financial structures, regulation of services, and paternalism in policy and practice. Recommendations for practice, policy, and research are provided.

The future of gerontological social work: a case for structural lag

The US population is aging. Traditional perspectives have emphasized that a substantial increase in the number of gerontological social workers is needed to care for this population. However, published evidence demonstrates that, along with population growth, economic and social factors must be taken into account before predicting future gerontological social work demand. Structural lag theory is introduced to explain how these factors affect the profession and may limit its presence in gerontological work settings. Recommendations are made to correct the lag, allowing the social work profession a more substantive voice in the aging enterprise.

The role of the gerontological social worker in assisted living

This qualitative study reports on thirteen assisted living (AL) administrators' perspectives of the role and the importance of the AL social worker in addressing the unmet needs of older adults as they move and transition into AL. Participant interviews were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Administrators described 5 AL social work roles: (a) decision-making and adjustment coordinator; (b) resident advocate; (c) mental health assessor and counselor; (d) family social worker; and (e) care planner. Implications include directly examining AL social workers' views, analyzing costs and benefits of employing AL social workers, and developing social work practicum sites within AL.

Civic engagement for nursing home residents: a call for social work action

Civic engagement has been found to be associated with a number of emotional and physical benefits for older adults. For those residing in nursing homes, however, opportunities for civic engagement are limited. Societal barriers such as ageism and practical issues such as transportation can limit their access to activities that promote civic engagement. In this article, we review past research on civic engagement for older adults and explore the challenges and barriers faced by nursing home residents. We conclude with a call for social work professionals to develop, implement, and evaluate interventions that increase civic engagement opportunities for this undervalued group.
