Polyacrylamide-induced coagulation process removing suspended solids from palm oil mill effluent

Concurrent removal of carbon and nutrients in a one-stage dual internal circulation airlift A2O bioreactor from milk processing industrial wastewater: Process optimization, sludge characteristics and operating cost evaluation

In this work, a one-stage dual internal circulation airlift anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (DCAL-A2O) bioreactor was continuously operated for concurrent removal of nutrients and organics from milk processing wastewater (MPW). Special configuration of the airlift A2O bioreactor created possibility of the formation of desired anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic zones in a single unit. The process functionality of the bioreactor was examined under three influential operating variables i.e. hydraulic retention time (HRT; 7-15 h), air flow rate (AFR; 1-3 L/min) and aerobic volume ratio (AVR; 0.324-0.464). The optimum region was identified at HRT of 13h, AFR of 2L/min and AVR of 0.437, leading to TCOD, TN and TP removal efficiency of 94.5 %, 59.6 %, and 62.2 %, respectively, and effluent turbidity of 8 NTU. The impact of feed biodegradability on the process performance of the bioreactor treating the MPW, soft drink wastewater (SDW) and soybean oil plant wastewater (SOW) was also assessed. From the results, the feed characteristics affected significantly the nutrients removal. Moreover, the feeding location played an effective role in the nutrient removal while treating the MPW at optimum operating conditions. In this study, the change in residual organic matters as soluble microbial products (SMP) was monitored at various operating conditions. In addition, the impact of SMP extracted from sludge, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) comprising of loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) was analyzed on sludge characteristics as bio-flocculation and settleability properties. According to the obtained data, the increase in operating variables led to the reduction in contents of effluent SMP, sludge SMP, LB-EPS, turbidity, and SVI, thereby, the enhancement in the sludge characteristics. Meanwhile, analysis of microbial communities verified the presence of various functional bacterial species. The cost operating evaluation confirmed the cost effectiveness of the airlift A2O bioreactor in reduction of energy consumption for the MPW treatment.

Post-treatment of soft drink industrial wastewater using a new antibacterial ultra-filtration membrane prepared of Polyethersulfone blended with boehmite-tannic acid-graphene quantum dot

Polymeric membranes have garnered great interest in wastewater treatment; however, fouling is known as their main limitation. Therefore, the blending of hydrophilic nanoparticles in polymeric membranes' structure is a promising approach for fouling reduction. Herein, a hydrophilic boehmite-tannic acid-graphene quantum dot (BM-TA-GQD) nanoparticle was synthesized and blended in a polyethersulfone polymeric membrane in different percentages. The fabricated membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) images, water contact angle, porosity measurement, and antibacterial and antifouling properties. Surface SEM images of the modified membranes showed good dispersion of nanoparticles up to 0.5 wt%, which resulted in hydrophilicity and pure water flux enhancement. Based on AFM images, the mean roughness (Sa) of the fabricated membranes decreased from 2.07 to 0.84 nm for the bare and optimum membranes, respectively. In terms of performance, increasing the nanoparticle percentages up to 0.5 wt% resulted in the flux recovery ratio developing from 44.58% for the bare membrane to 71.35% for the 0.5 wt% BM-TA-GQD/PES membrane (optimum membrane). The antibacterial property of fabricated membranes was studied against biologically treated soft drink industrial wastewater (BTSDIW) as a bacterial source. The results showed that the turbidity of solutions containing permeated wastewater from the modified membranes (0.1, 0.5, and 1 wt% of BM-TA-GQD) was lower than that obtained from the unmodified membrane. These results confirmed the antibacterial properties of fabricated membranes. Finally, the optimal membrane (0.5 wt% BM-TA-GQD) was examined for post-treatment of the BTSDIW. An effluent COD of 13 mg/L and turbidity of 2 NTU showed a successful performance of the filtration process. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Ultrafiltration PES membranes were modified by different loadings of BM-TA-GQD. Hydrophilicity improvement was achieved by adding BM-TA-GQD nanoparticles. Expansion of size and number of macro-voids in modified membranes was confirmed. Membrane roughness was reduced in the BM-TA-GQD blended membranes. The optimum membrane was efficient in COD and turbidity removal.

Treatment capacity of a novel flexible fibre biofilm bioreactor treating high-strength milk processing wastewater

This study was focused on the capacity investigation of a novel multistage flexible fibre biofilm reactor (MS-FFBR) to treat milk processing wastewater (MPW) with high organic loading (OLR). The MS-FFBR performance was evaluated at four intermediate stages separately, and also the final effluent quality of the overall system with an influent chemical oxygen demand (COD_in) ranged from 1500 ± 20 to 6000 ± 50 mg/L and hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 8, 12, and 16 h. By comparting the bioreactors into the four stages effectively enhanced the bioreactor's performance. The maximum TCOD removal efficiency was achieved at the first stage, which was about 89 ± 20, 82 ± 20, and 78 ± 20% at HRTs of 16, 12, 8 h, and low COD_in of 1600 ± 20, 1590 ± 20, and 1673 ± 20 mg/L, respectively. However, the first stage had less contribution to TCOD removal at high COD_in concentrations, reported to be about 42 ± 4%, 46 ± 4%, and 25 ± 4% at COD_in of 5960 ± 40, 5830 ± 40, and 5870 ± 40 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, the MS-FFBR was effective in removing total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity. The bioreactor has reduced the effluent turbidity to 9.0 ± 0.2, 20.0 ± 0.6, and 16.1 ± 0.5 NTU at low COD_in concentrations of 1600 ± 20, 1590 ± 20, and 1670 ± 20 mg/L and HRTs of 16, 12, and 8 h, respectively. The bioreactor revealed a high COD removal rate increased from 2.3 ± 0.1 to 12.2 ± 0.4 kg TCOD/m³d by increasing the OLR from 2.4 ± 0.1 to 17.6 ± 0.4 kg TCOD/m³d, confirming high reactor capacity for treatment of high-strength wastewater. Kinetic studies confirmed that the biomass yield was low at various HRTs ranging from 0.1 to 0.2 gVSS/gCOD.

1H DOSY analysis of high molecular weight acrylamide-based copolymer electrolytes using an inverse-geometry diffusion probe

Copolymers of [2-(acryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (AETAC) and acrylamide (AAm) (AETAC-co-AAm) are polyelectrolytes used as flocculants in wastewater purification. Diffusion-ordered two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) experiments for AETAC-co-AAm samples with Mw ranging from 1.9 to 3.9 million and a polyacrylamide sample with Mw of 1.3 million were carried out in pure D2O and in D2O containing 0.1 or 1 M NaCl using an inverse-geometry diffusion probe system. Projections of the DOSY contour plots onto the diffusion coefficient (D) dimension gave distributions of D for the AETAC and AAm units in the samples. The D values at the maximum point of the distribution (Dp) agreed fairly well with those determined by dynamic light scattering.

Advances in pretreatment technology for handling the palm oil mill effluent: Challenges and prospects

The palm oil mill effluent (POME) from palm milling oil activities is discharged into various water bodies which poses several environmental problems including turbidity, increases COD and BOD, adds oil and grease, increases total nitrogen, and other pollutants. Therefore, it requires effective treatment to remove the pollutants before disposal. The objective was to critically discuss the performance of POME pretreatments along with their limitations. To offer a coverage on the present less efficient technologies, the opportunities and challenges of advanced pretreatments that combine magnetic materials and natural composites as adsorbents are comprehensively reviewed here. Moreover, potential of various magnetic materials for POME pretreatment has been described. Several existing pretreatment methods such as physical pretreatments, chemical pretreatments, coagulation-flocculation, and adsorption can remove pollutant content from POME with certain limitations and the use of magnetic composite adsorbents can enhance the treatment efficiency.

Starch engineered with Moringa oleifera seeds protein crosslinked Fe3O4: A synthesis and flocculation studies

This study aimed to utilize cationic protein extracted from the Moringa oleifera seed in the fabrication of cationic starch crosslinked with magnetic nanoparticles (MagCS). Important synthesis parameters include starch to cationic protein volume ratio, magnetic nanoparticles mass fraction, reaction and crosslinking time, reaction and crosslinking temperature and crosslinker concentration. At optimum synthesis conditions, MagCS yield a 38.55% amide content, 2.46 degree of substitution, 1.1 mmol/g charge density and 78.6% crosslinking, which are much higher compared to other starch derivatives. A series of characterization analyses such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis and vibrating sample magnetometer concluded that MagCS was embedded with amide group, has high crystallinity structure, is thermally stable and shows a promising magnetic characteristic. Based on the synthesis parameters and characterization studies, the synthesis mechanism of MagCS was also postulated. The flocculation performance of MagCS was successfully assessed for the treatment of palm oil mill effluent. At optimum dosage, initial pH and settling time of 1.0 g/L, 9.0 and 15 min, the MagCS flocculant was able to remove 90.48, 83.95 and 58.19% of turbidity, color and chemical oxygen demand, respectively. This study provides an alternative eco-friendly materials in the wastewater treatment application.

A new anti-fouling polysulphone nanofiltration membrane blended by amine-functionalized MCM-41 for post treating waste stabilization pond's effluent

Developing an effective and stable separation membrane for water treatment is of much interest while challenging because of the restrictions of membrane fouling and water flux reduction. To minimize this problem, in this work, highly porous and hydrophilic nanostructure of NH₂-modified MCM-41 (NH₂-MCM-41) was embedded successfully into the nanofiltration (NF) membrane body via commonly used phase inversion method. The unmodified and modified nanofiller was analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-Ray powder diffractometry (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. Furthermore, the modified membranes were characterized through surface and cross section FE-SEM images, the membrane surface roughness, hydrophilicity, antifouling properties and dye rejection. Benefiting from porous networks and enhanced hydrophilicity, the mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) revealed more prominent hydrophilic property as well as higher pure water flux (PWF) compared with naked membrane. The polysulphone (PSf) membrane modified with NH₂-MCM-41-1.0 exhibited the highest pure water flux (PWF) of 65.43 kg/m².h and superior antifouling characteristics with a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of around 97.0% and an irreversible fouling resistance (R_ir) of 3.2%. Furthermore, the optimal membrane possessed high dye rejection (100%) and antifouling capacity (FRR of 97%) while filtering a field sample, effluent from a local stabilization pond treating municipal wastewater. The fabricated membrane in this study is believed to pave pathways for constructing NF membranes with superior effectiveness for other municipal and industrial wastewaters treatment.

Holistic process evaluation of non-conventional palm oil mill effluent (POME) treatment technologies: A conceptual and comparative review

Thriving oil palm agroindustry comes at a price of voluminous waste generation, with palm oil mill effluent (POME) as the most cumbersome waste due to its liquid state, high strength, and great discharge volume. In view of incompetent conventional ponding treatment, a voluminous number of publications on non-conventional POME treatments is filed in the Scopus database, mainly working on alternative or polishing POME treatments. In dearth of such comprehensive review, all the non-conventional POME treatments are rigorously reviewed in a conceptual and comparative manner. Herein, non-conventional POME treatments are sorted into the five major routes, viz. biological (bioconversions - aerobic/anaerobic biodegradation), physical (flotation & membrane filtration), chemical (Fenton oxidation), physicochemical (photooxidation, steam reforming, coagulation-flocculation, adsorption, & ultrasonication), and bioelectrochemical (microbial fuel cell) pathways. For aforementioned treatments, the constraints, pros, and cons are qualitatively and quantitatively (with compiled performance data) detailed to indicate their process maturity. Authors recommended (i) bioconversions, adsorption, and steam reforming as primary treatments, (ii) flotation and ultrasonication as pretreatments, (iii) Fenton oxidation, photooxidation, and membrane filtration as polishing treatments, and (iv) microbial fuel cell and coagulation-flocculation as pretreatment or polishing treatment. Life cycle assessments are required to evaluate the environmental, economic, and energy aspects of each process.

Palm Oil Mill Effluent Treatment Processes—A Review

Ponding system or land application techniques are widely used at industrial scale to treat palm oil mill effluent (POME) prior to discharge to the environment. POME is considered as one of the major problems that has generated voluminously from the palm oil industries. The main purpose of this article is to organize the scattered available information on various aspects and a wide range of promising current POME treatments including biological microorganisms, physicochemical methods of coagulation, and membrane and thermochemical process. In addition, the integrated system of anaerobic-aerobic bioreactor (IAAB), which has been touted as highly efficient with easy control at acceptable temperature range and shorter treatment time, has potential to be exploited for POME treatment. The main influencing factors for IAAB POME treatment are highlighted as outstanding characteristics for challenges and future prospects.

Application of coagulation/flocculation in oily wastewater treatment: A review

Volumes of oily wastewater are inevitably generated by every walk of life. The removal of oil particles from oil-contaminated wastewater which is characterized as huge amounts, intricate composition, and great threats to human health and the ecological environment is a research hotspot in water treatment fields. Due to high treatment costs and undesirable treatment efficiencies, oily wastewater treatment remains a topical and urgent issue. At present, coagulation/flocculation as an indispensable oily wastewater treatment technology receives much attention because it is very well established, economical, practical and relatively efficient. The influencing factors of oil wastewater treatment by coagulation/flocculation have also been summarized in-depth, like dosage, pH, etc. In consideration of its complex composition and treatment difficulty, this paper will also compare the treatment effects of different coagulants/flocculants used alone and combined effects in oily wastewater treatment: inorganic coagulants, organic synthetic polymeric flocculants, natural flocculants and modified polymeric flocculants. Additionally, in this review, the mechanisms of removing oily substance by coagulation/flocculation are emphasized. Given strict emission standards and the refractory nature of oily wastewater, the combination process with coagulation/flocculation, such as electrocoagulation, coagulation-membrane filtration hybrid process, and coagulation/flocculation-flotation can present better application potential and are discussed in this review. To provide a proper choice in practical application, the operating cost of coagulation and several conventional technologies are also compared. Finally, the existing challenges in the treatment of oily wastewater by coagulation are analyzed, and the feasible research direction is proposed.

Improved anaerobic digestion of palm oil mill effluent and biogas production by ultrasonication pretreatment

Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is a highly polluted wastewater that consists of a high organic content of 4-5% total solids; a potential renewable energy source. A waste to energy study was conducted to improve biogas production using POME as substrate by ultrasonication pretreatment at mesophilic temperatures. The effect of temperature on the specific growth rate of anaerobes and methanogenic activity was investigated. Five sets of assays were carried out at operating temperatures between 25 °C and 45 °C. Each set consisted of two experiments using identical anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (AnSBR); fed with raw POME (control) and sonicated POME, respectively. The ultrasonication was set at 16.2 min ultrasonication time and 0.88 W mL^-1 ultrasonication density with substrate total solids concentration of 6% (w/v). At 25 °C, biogas production rate and organic matter removal exhibited lowest values for both reactors. The maximum organic degradation was 96% from AnSBR operated at 30 °C fed with sonicated POME and 91% from AnSBR operated at 35 °C fed with unsonicated POME. In addition, the methane yield from AnSBR operated at 30 °C was enhanced by 21.5% after ultrasonication pretreatment. A few normality tests and a t-test were carried out. Both tests indicated that the residuals of the experimental data were normality distributed with mean equals to zero. The results demonstrated that ultrasonication treatment was a promising pretreatment to positively affect the organic degradation and biogas production rates at 30-35 °C.
