Supported H8PV5Mo7O40 on activated carbon: Synthesis and Investigation of influencing factors for catalytic performance

Polyoxometalates (POMs), in particular the Keggin-type HPA-5 (H8PV5Mo7O40) are widely established as effective catalysts for acid- and redox-catalyzed reactions. Yet, they are mainly used as homogeneous catalysts, which poses challenges regarding catalyst separation. This study explores the synthesis of supported HPA-5, and its application as a heterogeneous catalyst for biomass conversion, focusing on activated carbons with diverse chemical and physical properties as support materials. Characterization of these carbons gives insights into the influence of surface area, oxygen content, and acidity on HPA adsorption and stability. Activated carbon CW20, was found to be the best support due to its high vanadium loading and effective preservation of the HPA-5 structure. It underwent various pre- and post-treatments, and the obtained supported catalysts were evaluated for their catalytic performance in converting glucose under both oxidative (OxFA process) and inert (Retro-Aldol condensation) conditions. Notably, HPA-5 supported on CW20 emerged as an exceptional catalyst for the retro-aldol condensation of glucose to lactic acid, achieving a selectivity of 15% and a conversion rate of 71%, with only minimal vanadium leaching.

Exploring the Reactivity of Polyoxometalates toward Proteins: From Interactions to Mechanistic Insights

The latest advances in the study of the reactivity of metal-oxo clusters toward proteins showcase how fundamental insights obtained so far open new opportunities in biotechnology and medicine. In this Perspective, these studies are discussed through the lens of the reactivity of a family of soluble anionic metal-oxo nanoclusters known as polyoxometalates (POMs). POMs act as catalysts in a wide range of reactions with several different types of biomolecules and have promising therapeutic applications due to their antiviral, antibacterial, and antitumor activities. However, the lack of a detailed understanding of the mechanisms behind biochemically relevant reactions-particularly with complex biological systems such as proteins-still hinders further developments. Hence, in this Perspective, special attention is given to reactions of POMs with peptides and proteins showcasing a molecular-level understanding of the reaction mechanism. In doing so, we aim to highlight both existing limitations and promising directions of future research on the reactivity of metal-oxo clusters toward proteins and beyond.

Hydration of Camphene over PW-SBA-15-SO3H

The hydration of camphene was carried out over SBA-15 with sulfonic acid groups and tungstophosphoric acid at 50 °C. The main product of camphene hydration was isoborneol, with camphene hydrate and borneol as byproducts. The catalytic activity increased with the amount of tungstophosforic acid (PW) immobilized on the silica support until a maximum, which was obtained with the PW4-SBA-15-SO₃H material (16.4 wt.%). When the amount of PW immobilized on SBA-15 increased (PW5-SBA-15-SO₃H, 21.2 wt.%), the catalytic activity decreased. The catalytic activity of PW4-SBA-15-SO₃H increased with the water content of the solvent, until a maximum was reached with 50% water. With higher water concentrations, a decrease in the catalytic activity was observed. The selectivity to isoborneol was 90% at 99% camphene conversion in the presence of the PW4-SBA-15-SO₃H catalyst. The catalytic stability of the PW4-SBA-15-SO₃H material during camphene hydration was studied by performing consecutive batch runs with the same catalyst sample. After the third run, a trend towards stabilized catalytic activity was observed. A kinetic model is also proposed.

Acetalization of Glycerol with Citral over Heteropolyacids Immobilized on KIT-6

Glycerol acetalization with citral was studied using a heteropolyacid (tungstophosphoric acid) supported on KIT-6, as a catalyst, at 100 °C. Different catalysts were synthesized. Catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total refletion-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and potentiometric titrations. At a fixed time, the glycerol conversion increased with the H3PW12O40 (PW) on KIT-6. PW4-KIT-6 material had a higher conversion than other catalysts. The optimization of glycerol’s acetalization with citral was studied under the PW4-KIT-6 catalyst. After 5 h, it was found that, at T = 100 °C, with m = 0.3 g of solid, molar glycerol:citral = 1:2.25, the conversion of glycerol was 89%. Moreover, the PW4-KTI-6 catalyst showed good catalytic stability.

Vanadium-doped phosphomolybdic acids as catalysts for geraniol oxidation with hydrogen peroxide

The vanadium-doped phosphomolybdic acid (H4PMo11VO40) was the most active and selective heteropoly catalyst in one-pot oxidative esterification of benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide.

Vanadium-doped sodium phosphomolybdate salts as catalysts in the terpene alcohols oxidation with hydrogen peroxide

In this work, we have explored the catalytic activity of Keggin-type heteropolyanions PMo_12−nV_nO₄₀⁽³⁺ⁿ⁾⁻ (n = 0, 1, 2, or 3) in the form of sodium salts in green oxidation routes of terpene alcohols with hydrogen peroxide. Nerol was the model molecule selected to assess the impacts of the main reaction parameters, such as temperature, catalyst load, and stoichiometry of reactants. The impacts of the presence of vanadium at different proportions (i.e., V₁, V₂, and V₃ loads/per anion) in the structure of phosphomolybdate catalysts were assessed. All the catalysts were characterized by various techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction, attenuated diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, isotherms of adsorption–desorption of N₂ measurements of surface area, scanning electronic microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and n-butylamine potentiometric titration. Among the catalysts assessed, Na₄PMo₁₁VO₄₀ was the most active and selective toward epoxides. The efficiency of this catalyst in the epoxidation of different terpene alcohols was investigated. Special attention was dedicated to correlating the composition and properties of the vanadium-doped phosphomolybdic catalysts with their catalytic activity.

Dissolving pulp production: Cellulases and xylanases for the enhancement of cellulose accessibility and reactivity

Dissolving pulps are high-grade cellulose pulps that have minimum amount of non-cellulosic impurities. Dissolving pulps are the basic source for the manufacturing of several cellulosic products such as viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetates, cellulose nitrates, carboxymethyl-cellulose, etc. Dissolving pulps are mainly manufactured by pre-hydrolysis kraft and acid sulphite pulping. A high reactivity of dissolving pulps is desirable for its eco-friendly utilization for several purposes. Several approaches including mechanical, chemical, ultrasonic, and enzymatic treatments have been employed for the improvement of pulp reactivity. This review mainly focussed on pulp reactivity improvement through enzymatic approaches. Cellulases and xylanase have been proved effective for the improvement of pulp reactivity of dissolving pulp from different sources. The different combinations of cellulase, xylanase, and mechanical refining have been tested and found more effective rather than the single one.

Direct Alcoholysis of Carbohydrate Precursors and Real Cellulosic Biomasses to Alkyl Levulinates: A Critical Review

Alkyl levulinates (ALs) represent outstanding bio-fuels and strategic bio-products within the context of the marketing of levulinic acid derivatives. However, their synthesis by acid-catalyzed esterification of pure levulinic acid, or by acid-catalyzed alcoholysis of furfuryl alcohol, although relatively simple, is still economically disadvantageous, due to the high costs of the pure precursors. The direct one-pot alcoholysis of model C6 carbohydrates and raw biomass represents an alternative approach for the one-step synthesis of ALs. In order to promote the market for these bio-products and, concurrently, the immediate development of new applications, it is necessary to speed up the intensification of their production processes, and this important achievement is onlypossible by using low-cost or, even better, waste biomasses, as starting feedstocks. This review provides an overview of the most recent and promising advances on the one-pot production of ALs from model C6 carbohydrates and real biomasses, in the presence of homogeneous or heterogeneous acid catalysts. The use of model C6 carbohydrates allows for the identification of the best obtainable ALs yields, resulting in being strategic for the development of new smart catalysts, whose chemical properties must be properly tuned, taking into account the involved reaction mechanism. On the other hand, the transition to the real biomass now represents a necessary choice for allowing the next ALs production on a larger scale. The improvement of the available synthetic strategies, the use of raw materials and the development of new applications for ALs will contribute to develop more intensified, greener, and sustainable processes.

Heteropoly acid catalytic treatment for reactivity enhancement and viscosity control of dissolving pulp

The reactivity enhancement and viscosity control are of practical importance during the manufacture of high-quality cellulose (also known as dissolving pulp). In the study, the concept of using phosphotungstic acid (HPW) for this purpose was demonstrated. The Fock reactivity of resultant pulp increased from 49.1% to 74.1% after the HPW catalytic treatment at a dosage of 86.4 mg HPW/g odp. The improved results can be attributed to the increased fiber accessibility, thanks to the favorable fiber morphologic changes, such as increased pore volume/size, water retention value and specific surface area. HPW can be readily recycled/reused by evaporating method, where maintaining 87.1% catalytic activity after six recycle times. The HPW catalytic treatment concept may provide a green alternative for the manufacture of high-quality dissolving pulp.
